Welcome to the October edition of... What’s not to love about Autumn? Crunching through leaves, searching for the perfect conker, shopping for a new season of clothes and lots of seasonal events to enjoy! Some people might grumble about the chillier weather, and the evenings drawing in after ninety-four days of Summer, but I see it as the perfect chance to wrap up warm, and plan some Halloween fun! Did you know that originally those knocking on doors Halloween evening had to dance for their treat? This month, if your fancy a boogie, check out our jam-packed gigs guide, on page 45, for local bands to enjoy. Not only have we included a wide range of exciting events for you this month, but we have a spattering of spooky ideas to keep the whole family entertained. Why not try this month’s warming soup recipe (page 19) after your pumpkin is carved, then head on out to Whittlesey’s ‘Scarefest’ on the 29th (details on p43). I’d like to say a huge thanks to our regular contributors, who continue to enrich each edition for your enjoyment… and thanks to you, our readers, for all of your recent positive feedback. We appreciate every one of you!

It’s been a few months since I donned my editor’s hat, and I have found myself becoming a little strangely obsessed with commas and apostrophes. I’m hoping it might be contagious, as I’ve also recently been attempting to impress on my students the importance of well-placed punctuation, sharing with them phrases such as “Let’s eat Grandpa!” - a clear example of where one small inclusion could easily save a life! As I scour this month’s magazine to check each full stop, I’m proud of what a varied and exciting magazine we have on our hands, once again. After just over a year of landing through your doors, Discovering Deeping is continuing to evolve, and we would love to hear from you, via email, or facebook, about any feature ideas you have. However, I know, like me, you’ll be looking forward to perusing this month’s contributions from our regular contributors. I really do learn so much more about our little corner of the world each month, through our history pages, and community news, with this month being no exception. Enjoy your read!

Words from the Mayor Councillor Wayne Lester Just before the summer recess, I dropped into Tesco to support the Deepings Men’s Group on one of their fund raising days. I also got away with my family over the summer recess, to Scotland. However, I still had time to sort out a few council issues, and get about the town, along with a couple of civic events around the county.
Up and coming events: ■ 12th – 16th October - Grey’s Fair will be in town Look out for the next Mayor’s Car Boot; a chance to help me support my local charities (Deepings Men’s Group & The Lincolnshire Army Cadet Force)
Council News The Council has now reconvened following the summer recess, and we have a number of issues coming up, including possible parking charges at the Co-op, planning applications for the Towngate development, issues with our roads, footways, and access on to our open spaces, along with planning next year’s budget. I would welcome your positive comments on these and any other issues, so we can make sound judgements, and best represent our town’s people in our deliberations. Let’s all help to keep Market Deeping the place where we all want to live, bring up our families, and work. The council is reviewing an outline proposal from New River retail for car parking charges at the Co-op, we welcome your views on the matter; please can you send in your comments to our Town Clerk, Julie Bourne at mdtc.townclerk@ btconnect.com. Please note that we are in the early stages of discussions, and nothing has been agreed to date. How would you prefer to have open dialogue with the local council? Would you like to see your councillors and officials blog, tweet and put more messages on the Facebook page? We would like to know how best to engage with our community, other than at meetings, and producing publications. Again, please send your comments to our Town Clerk, Julie Bourne at mdtc.townclerk@btconnect.com. We will soon be starting to plan for next year’s budget and our precept. So if you think the town needs to support a good cause, or needs some improvements in any area, we would like to hear from you.

Stamford based charity and Market Deeping Care Home announce onging partnership to enrich the lives of local people
R
ose Lodge Care Home, a leading Market Deeping Residential and Dementia Care Home, and Evergreen Care Trust, a charity now in its twelfth year supporting Stamford, Bourne and The Deepings, recently announced their ongoing partnership. The partnership will combine both Evergreen Care Trust and Rose Lodge’s passion for enriching the lives of the local people which they serve. Rose Lodge Care Home, opened in September 2015 by Cllr Wayne Lester, Mayor of Market Deeping, is a thirty-three bed Residential Care Home in Market Deeping, and is part of the award winning national care provider Country Court Care. The home has established itself as somewhat of a community hub in the past year, hosting many community engagement events and inviting local people into the home. They have one simple philosophy; their residents and their families are at the heart of everything they do! Evergreen Care Trust is a Stamford based charity, focused on responding to the changing needs of adults in our community experiencing periods of vulnerability, developing new services and projects accordingly. Evergreen also provide advocacy, a befriending service, a cleaning team, friendship lunches, hot and wholesome soup delivery, a “hospital to home” service,

home support and well-being visits. Evergreen have an amazing team of staff, and two hundred volunteers, all keen to do everything they can to improve lives. The partnership’s first major collaborative project was a recent first birthday party, for Rose Lodge Care Home, on the 24th of September. Throughout the day there was entertainment, afternoon tea, dancing and a raffle. All local people were invited to come along and celebrate the day with the residents of the home and the service users of the Evergreen Trust. Discussing the new partnership, Managing Director of Country Court Care Alykhan Kachra stated: “We are all absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to team up with the Evergreen Care Trust. The work they do is extremely valuable, and we certainly welcome the chance to help them build a base in Market Deeping, and continue to work in partnership with them to enrich the lives of all local people.” Rosie Maclennan, Marketing Manager at the Evergreen Trust, was also delighted with the announced partnership: “We are absolutely delighted to have been given this opportunity and had a lovely time at Rose Lodge’s birthday party.”

Cupping Cupping has been in the news a lot in recent years, and even seen recently being used by Olympians. There appears to be a rise in terms of both use, and research, into this ancient tradition. It has played an important role in human health and welfare, for more than a thousand years. It has a variety of uses in healthcare systems around the world, outside of the realm of conventional medicine. There are numerous reports mentioned in history, where a prescription has been given to patients that include cupping therapy for a number of diseases. From Egyptian papyrus to Ancient Greek medicine, cupping has found its way into most historical medical theories. Even the great Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, preached about the benefits of cupping, for many conditions, including musculoskeletal diseases of the back, gynaecological complaints, ear aliments and lung diseases. Currently, cupping may still seem
strange to us here in the West, but it is recognized worldwide as a holistic approach to healing, used within many different cultures. Cupping works by helping to extract blood from the body which may be harmful to the patient. This invites, and increases, the flow of fresh new blood into the cupped area, to aid in the healing process. A cupping glass is applied to the predefined area of skin, and a vacuum is generated, to encourage skin to be dragged into the glass. This will also improve blood circulation, and relieve painful muscle tension. There have been a number of research trials in recent years, all of which have found cupping to be very beneficial for muscular skeletal conditions, facial paralysis, herpes zoster, and can also have a surprisingly beneficial effect on organ health. As a traditional acupuncturist, I will include cupping into my treatment plan, where I see fit. Over the years, I have seen

Duncan Ford BA (Hons), Lic.ac, MBAcC Cert KHT cupping play a major role in helping people who are in pain with their backs, shoulders and necks, with surprising efficiency. With the rise of its use within the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro this year and the athletes promoting its use, perhaps we will see more research conducted, and its use become more mainstream? If you would like to know more about how cupping, or any other aspect of acupuncture, may be able to help you, then please contact the clinic to speak with me.

Nursing home receives a fully compliant report Holland House Nursing Home recently had a visit from the industry regulators, the Care Quality Commission (CQC). They visited to complete an unannounced, random inspection of Holland House’s service. The nursing home, which has been part of the Country Court Care Group since Feburary of 1997, has not had an inspection for a little over a year, and was rigorously checked against several outcome areas of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2010.

After the inspection, Country Court Care’s senior management and all staff at Holland House Nursing Home were delighted to learn that the home had received a feedback report with a “fully compliant” status, with extremely positive feedback from the CQC. The CQC Inspector highlighted certain areas which she felt Holland House had excelled in, namely staff to resident communication, and treating

the residents with respect and integrity. A resident stated, for the CQC report: “I’m very glad I chose here. It has a friendly and caring feel to it and a wonderful atmosphere. The staff members are very considerate and I’m well cared for.” Discussing the inspection, Home Manager, Julie Britten, stated: “Receiving a ‘Good’ status gives our dedicated team of staff members the recognition they deserve for their hard work. We work tirelessly to maintain and increase our impeccable standards. We are all thrilled.”

New local Art School Creates Art Stars Having loved all things creative as a child growing up in the Deepings, local illustrator Ellie Sandall has recently launched an art school for aspiring young artists in the Deepings and surrounding areas. Ellie’s new venture, Art Stars, offers term time art tuition, holiday workshops and Arts Award courses for 4-11 year olds, and is based in her studio at The Cross School in Deeping St. James. Her aim is to inspire and enable creative children and young people to further their engagement with the arts. Since graduating from Cambridge School of Art in 2007, Ellie has worked as a freelance children’s book author and illustrator (her fifth book, Everybunny Dance, is due to be published by Hodder Children’s Books in December). Ellie has a BA in Graphic Design and an MA in Children’s Book Illustration, and has worked with children for over 12 years. Alongside her illustration work, she taught art for five years as the Artist in Residence at two primary schools in Peterborough, and is now keen to offer children in the Deepings and beyond the opportunity to develop their creativity. Art Stars offers tuition to complement the Early Years and Primary art curriculum, working with small class sizes to ensure that children receive plenty of individual support and guidance. Classes focus on a particular aspect of visual art each half term, including drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, printmaking and textiles, culminating in a mini exhibition and portfolio of work. The art school will also be offering young people the opportunity to work towards an Arts Award- a recognised qualification open to young people between the ages of 4 and 25. Endorsed by Trinity College, London, Arts Award encourages the development of creativity and leadership skills through participation in a variety of arts activities. Ellie has successfully passed over 200 children to date, and is currently qualified to deliver the award up to Silver level. Art Stars also offers bespoke art workshops for schools and nurseries. More information can be found on the Art Stars website, www. artstarsdeeping.com, or contact Ellie on ellie_ sandall@yahoo.com or 07763614479.

Osteoporosis “The silent disease!”
Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones causing them to become less dense and more fragile. Bones are at their thickest, and strongest, in our early adult life and their density increases until our late twenties. We gradually start losing bone density from around the age of thirty-five years. This happens naturally to everyone, but some people can develop osteoporosis, as they age, and lose bone density much faster than normal. This means that they are at greater risk of injury, and the condition is often only diagnosed when a minor fall, or sudden impact, causes a bone fracture. Osteoporosis is often perceived as a ‘woman’s disease’, but it represents a major public health threat for older men too, with one in five men, over the age of fifty, experiencing a fracture, due to osteoporosis, in their lifetime. While bone mass is highly genetically determined, after sixty-five years of age, genetics play a diminishing role in bone loss, and exercise becomes increasingly important.
before bone density naturally begins to decrease, around the age of thirty-five • Maintaining bone and muscle strength in adults, which is a key osteoporosis prevention measure • Helping the elderly, and people with osteoporosis, to remain mobile and active, thus, helping to prevent falls, through developing muscle strength, and creating better balance. The fact is that stronger muscles create stronger bones, and to stay healthy, adults aged nineteen – sixty-four, should be active daily, and should: • Complete at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity such as cycling or fast walking every week, and undertake strength exercises, on a minimum of three days a week, to work all the major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms).
Under the call to action: ‘Move it or Lose it’, the World Osteoporosis Day campaign of 2005 sought to draw public attention to the specific role of weight-bearing and muscle strengthening exercise in:
Empire Gym is accessible to all age groups, and we have the expertise to advise on all aspects of exercise, to reduce the risks associated with Osteoporosis. Our equipment and facilities enable the delivery of appropriate training programmes, in a comfortable and safe environment.

Digital Image Sizes Explained You’ll need your ‘maths head’ on for this month’s article, as we’re going to look at digital images and the relationship between physical dimension (inches/cms), DPI (dots per inch) and Pixel size. Let’s use this holiday snap of Dubrovnik (Croatia) as an example.
DPI: Simply put, this is what it ‘says on the tin’; it is the number of dots that make up one inch of our image. So, 100 DPI will have 100 individual dots in one inch of physical size. Print Size:
If we look at the data attributes for this image, you will see there are three main elements to understand when we look at the SIZE and RESOLUTION of the image; Pixel Dimensions, Print Size and Resolution. When considering what each of these elements mean, it is best to relate to Pixel Dimensions when using the image in digital output format, such as on a computer screen. Then consider Print Size when you want to print out a ‘hard’ copy on a printer or when sending an image to someone who is going to print a copy. Pixel Dimensions: We use these mainly in deciding what size we want an image to appear on a digital screen (e.g. PC, phone, tablet). A pixel is a single ‘dot’, so the more pixels you have in an image, the greater the size of the image on screen. Screen sizes vary greatly these IT Support and Training for Home Computer Users and Small Businesses 01778 590632 07894 659479 www.litespc.co.uk info@litespc.co.uk

days, but a typical display is around 1920x1080 pixels. If we look at the Pixel Dimensions for the image, it shows 1000x750 pixels. As such, the full size on screen will be around half of the width of the screen (1000 of 1920) and 75% of the height of the screen (750 of 1080). How clear that image is on the screen will depend on the DPI, (the higher the DPI, the better the image looks on screen), although, that said, most PC screens do not benefit in quality for anything greater than 90 dpi.
D I S C O V E R I N G
This is important when we want to PRINT to paper, and ties in very closely with DPI and Pixel Dimensions. Looking at the information for our holiday snap, it shows that we have an image of 1000x750 pixels and a DPI of 100 (100 dots per inch). Using these two figures, we can decide what size our print will be, as it will be 1000 divided by 100 = 10 inches wide and 750 divided by 100 = 7.5 inches tall. Using this relationship, we can change the DPI to get a larger or smaller print. So, if you change the DPI of this image to 200dpi, then the image size will be 1000pixels divided by 200 dpi = 5 inches by 750pixels divided by 200dpi = 3.75 inches. This would result in a smaller print-out of the image, but one that looks sharper as the number of dots in 1 inch is higher (200 instead of 100). This may sound great but remember that, as you increase the DPI, the physical size of the printed image will shrink accordingly. Images downloaded from a camera will usually be larger than the figures quoted here, allowing you more flexibility in changing things for screen or paper. For example, the original image used in this article actually has Pixel Dimensions of 5184x3888 at 350 dpi. Using the relationship shown above, if I printed this off straight to paper the image would print at 5184/350 = 14.8 inches by 3888/350 =11.1 inches and with 350 dots to every inch on the print out. This would be a fairly high definition photograph larger than a sheet of A4.

Holidays and Children – Yes, there is a Solution! You don’t want to stop travelling overseas just because you now have children and what’s more, you still want quality accommodation, great facilities and a little time for yourselves to relax. Great entertainment for your children and occasional supervision for them can be so important.
So here are some top tips on how to avoid having a stressful holiday with children.
1. Pace yourself. Go with the flow and don’t pack in too much. Build in rest days and be realistic about what you might see and do. 2. Travel is great for broadening the
mind, even if you’re a five year old. Start getting your little ones prepared for their holiday by treating it like a project. Read a guide book to them or watch a DVD or perhaps even try some of the local traditional dishes you may expect at your destination. Encourage them to keep a holiday journal, collect photos, ticket stubs and draw pictures of what they have seen, and record new words they may have learned along the way.
3. Research and prepare a “things to do and places to go if the weather isn’t great” list. This is particularly good if travelling out of season in the February or October half-terms.
5. Choose a hotel that caters for
children. “Kids Clubs” can give parents a welcome break but make sure you check what ages they take, what hours they operate and that they are running at the time of year you are visiting (many only run for the high season).
6. Taking a buggy or pram, even if your child is now walking, can be handy as they can double up as places to rest from the heat or, if up a little later than usual, to rest in a restaurant, for example. 7. Check the hand luggage restrictions before travelling, including the latest rules on carrying liquids, gels and creams, which will more than likely include milk and nappy cream, for example. Chances are you will be able to carry them, but they may have to be stored in a specific way and not
carried over a certain quantity, as the rules change so often it’s always worth checking, close to travel.
8. Requesting a ground floor room, if available, is often a good idea and checking the hot water temperature is another top tip to ensure it’s not too hot for little hands. 9. When flying, it’s helpful to have something such as a boiled sweet to suck on, or a drink, during take-off and landing. Make sure you have plenty of ways to entertain your little one such as crayons, books and their favourite toy. Let me help you arrange a stress-free family holiday. Call me today and see how I can help.
4. If possible, check in online as knowing that you are all sitting together on the flight will give you peace of mind and you can often turn up a little later at the airport, leaving less time to entertain your child before boarding.

There is a huge range of symptoms, meaning that the condition is often wrongly diagnosed.
| Spotlight on... FENLAND AND DISTRICT
Coeliac Group Coeliac Disease, which affects about 1% of the population, is a condition in which eating gluten causes the sufferer’s immune system to attack the lining of the stomach, so that their bodies can no longer absorb enough iron, calcium, and other nutrients essential to stay healthy. There is a huge range of symptoms, ranging from tiredness and headaches, internal bloating and cramps, dermatitis and hair loss, to chronic diarrhoea and vomiting, meaning that the condition is often wrongly diagnosed.
The jewel in the group's crown has to be the annual Food Fair at Peterborough Regional College. The Fair, organised single-handedly by Kristina Buffham, gives national and local food producers the opportunity to promote their product to anyone, coeliac or not, with an interest in gluten-free foods. Kristina hopes that the next Food Fair, on October 15th, will for the first time host a gluten-free brewery – yes, beers and ales contain gluten, too! For more information about Coeliac Disease, visit coeliac.org.uk. To contact John about events, or to volunteer your help, email fenland@coeliac.org.uk. The only treatment is to avoid eating even the smallest traces of gluten. Continuing to eat gluten can result in a range of serious health complications, including infertility, osteoporosis, increased risk of cancer and, in children, stunted growth and delayed development. Gluten is found mostly in wheat, barley and rye, and is therefore present in many foodstuffs, from baking powder to soy sauce, and from pasta to pizzas. Living with Coeliac Disease therefore requires constant vigilance when shopping, and even more so when eating out.
Fortunately, the national charity Coeliac UK provides sufferers with a wealth of support, with a local branch based in Whittlesey, near Peterborough. The Fenland and District Coeliac Group, headed by John Buffham, helps over five hundred people across the region by organising social events such as coffee mornings, meals and outings, as well as keeping members informed through a regular newsletter, a Facebook group, and a list of coeliac-friendly eating places.
G
With almost every supermarket boasting a “free from” section, gluten-free diets have become popular in recent years. For one group of people, however, avoiding gluten is not a life-style choice, but a survival skill.

Neighbours – Everybody Needs Good Neighbours! As the nights pull in – make sure your elderly neighbours aren’t left in the dark. Autumn is now here, and, along with its rich colours, crisp walks and atmospheric sunlight, also come darker nights, colder weather and, later this month, Hallowe’en, heralding “trick or treaters”. So, now is the ideal time to get into the habit of keeping an eye on an older friend or neighbour. The winter months can be lonely and isolating for those who are less mobile; a knock at the door after dark can be frightening and cold callers on the phone can leave the 13:28 recipient feeling vulnerable. The situation isn’t helped by the many rogue traders who try to tout for work in the local area, often suggesting to the home owner that some guttering or a roof are in need of repair before winter sets in. This can lead to vulnerable people parting with their cash, and getting nothing but shoddy work and a huge dent in their savings in return. Then there are phone scams, which may on the surface seem to be less intrusive, but are equally as dangerous. These can range from callers claiming to be from companies to check non- existent faults on your computer, banks claiming to check your account details and even, so-called, medical companies suggesting the need for mobile aid from electric chairs to stair lifts. Share these tips with family and friends, and older relatives:

With winter on the way, maybe now is a good time to join a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme within your community. Safe Local Trades, covering the PE Postcode area, has worked with many local Neighbourhood Watch groups over the years – including those in Yaxley and Cardea - providing numerous lamp-post signs as well as giving free talks on the dangers of doorstep callers and other scams. It has been proven that areas which operate a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme are less likely to be targeted by crime, rogue traders and distraction burglars. If you live in, or know anyone in the PE Postcode area who would like to inquire about obtaining free Neighbourhood Watch lamp-post signs, please e-mail eileen@safelocaltrades. com or, for advice, visit http://www.safelocaltrades. com/consumers/advice/your-neighbourhoodneighbourhoodwatch Meanwhile, don’t be fooled by rogue or cowboy traders making an offer that seems too good to be true – as it most probably is.

ell, I had a bumper crop of beans last month, but a lot of my fennel bolted: so did Monty Don’s … so that made me feel better!
Remember that the clocks go back at the end of this month, so make as much use as possible of daylight hours before winter sets in. This month sees jobs that are mainly clearing the plot ready for the winter months; plenty of digging and manuring. Harvest or protect any remaining crops that are susceptible to frosts and clear away any remaining debris and place on the compost heap: the larger the quantity, the better, as this helps the heap to warm up and accelerates the rotting process. It is advisable to shred or pulverize thick, woody stems such as sweetcorn, beans and brassicas so that they decompose more quickly. If you haven’t already cut down asparagus foliage, do it this month as well as cutting back Jerusalem artichokes, and compost the lot. Do not put any diseased foliage on the compost heap; burn or discard it. If you have pumpkins or squashes, cut and leave them to dry in the sun, which will harden the skins and improve their shelf-life. Potatoes and beetroot should all be harvested now; although carrots can be left in the ground, it is probably advisable to lift them. Potatoes should be stored in paper or jute sacks in a dark, dry,
frost-free environment. Carrots can be stored by spreading a layer of sand in a box and laying them on the sand; avoid them touching, and then cover them completely with another layer of sand, repeat until the box is full and then cover. Freezing is also an option, and some carrot varieties will state that they are suitable for freezing on the packet. When freezing whole carrots, blanch for five minutes and then make sure they are dried out before bagging them – they should last for several months. You can also successfully keep root vegetables, except potatoes, in the ground by covering the roots with a layer of straw to protect the plants from frost. Crops that can be sown this month are:• Early broad beans • Spring cabbage • Garlic • Rhubarb crowns • Japanese over-wintering onion sets. Although large onion sets look stronger, small or medium ones are less likely to bolt in the spring Other jobs for this month include:• Continue to earth up celery and leeks • Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd • Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries • Dig over the potato patch to check for rogue potatoes – if they sprout next year, they may carry disease • Remove yellow leaves from brassicas – leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould

Where there’s a Will –
There’s a strange request? What is significant in one person’s life, may not be so important for another, and you can often see examples when you look at people’s wills and funeral requests. 1616 William Shakespeare’s dying wishes were recently put on display in Stratford, and he is one of many who had strange, and widely publicised, plans around his death. The only mention Shakespeare made of his wife, Anne Hathaway, is that she must receive his second best bed – the whereabouts of his best bed are unknown! 1821 It is usually money, or property, that is left within a person’s will – but not for French military leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, who reportedly asked for his hair to be cut, and distributed, to his close friends upon his death.
1999 British-born singer, Dusty Springfield regarded her cat highly, and is said to have asked for him to be fed only imported baby food, and to listen to her songs frequently. The cat, named Nicholas, was also to marry his new owner’s cat, at Dusty’s request. 2006 In keeping with his many costume changes during his shows, James Brown had his outfit swapped during each of the three funerals that were held in various locations across America. Want to arrange something unusual or quirky for your funeral – call us on 01778 382723 and we will help.
1926 Unsurprisingly, after the death of magician, Harry Houdini, his wife was given a secret code, found in his will, which she was to use for contacting him in the afterlife. The magic failed, despite her best efforts every Halloween. 1998 For Frank Sinatra’s funeral, he was given a variety of gifts within his casket, including a lighter, bottle of whisky and a coin – which is said to have been provided in jest, in case he needed to make a phone call.

But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. areas and manager Mark Sherwood agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

By Alder Veterinary Practice, Bourne
Seasonal Canine Illness in Dogs
Over the last few years, we have seen an increase in the number of cases of what appears to be ‘Seasonal Canine Illness’ in dogs, during the months of August through to November. Although the cause is not yet known, we do know that these dogs have been walked in woodland. Last year in our Bourne practice, most cases had been to the woods at Sandringham. There are concerns that some of the cases may be associated with having walked in Bourne Woods, a few days before clinical signs were present - usually between twenty-four and seventy-two hours. Dogs of all breeds, ages and sizes can be affected by this mystery illness and, sadly, this can prove fatal in some dogs, especially those with compromised immune systems and the older or the very young dog. Clinical signs mainly include vomiting, diarrhoea, trembling, loss of appetite and lethargy; if you notice this in any dog especially one that has been walked in woodland then please do contact your veterinary practice immediately. There have been far fewer fatal cases of this in the last couple of years though, as people are hearing more about it and becoming more aware of the urgency to seek medical advice.
With the correct treatment which can sometimes involve a hospital stay, most dogs will recover well within a few days with intravenous fluid therapy and drugs to control the vomiting and diarrhoea. This sometimes takes about a week but sometimes a bit longer, depending on the individual dog. The Animal Health Trust in Newmarket has been conducting research into this illness for the last few years and we hope that, soon, they may be a step closer to finding out how we can prevent this. Until then, if you are walking your dogs in woodland, please keep a close eye on them and watch that they don’t pick anything up to consume. As we don’t know if this could be from a mite which may be picked up in these areas, it is a good idea to use a preventative topical preparation against mites, fleas and ticks. Please contact your vet to be prescribed the best product for this.
For any further information, please contact your veterinary practice to have a chat with a vet or a veterinary nurse.

Bourne SciFest SciFest is here again! Since 2000, this event has been held every two years, arranged by a small group of teachers and helpers. The aim is to promote an interest in various branches of science throughout the primary schools in Bourne and the surrounding villages. During the week commencing Monday October 3rd, a number of demonstrators will be visiting the schools, presenting different aspects of science. There will be a couple of old friends who have attended every SciFest since 2000. Mark Atkinson from Earthbound Misfits will examine the effect of gravity and other forces with the aid of some circus skills. He may even teach us how to juggle. Dave Shaw has entertained us in the past with his experiences in the rain forests of Ecuador. This time, he will talk about “Tribes, Teeth and Tarantulas”.
Football fans will be catered for by James Soper who will explain how to “Bend it Like Beckham”.
The fascinating world of space and astronomy will be revealed in a portable planetarium by Starlincs.
If this wasn’t enough, children will have the opportunity to bring their parents to two evening shows in Bourne Corn Exchange.
Younger children will have hands-on experience of a number of minibeasts, including Colin the corn snake and his friends. They will also be introduced to simple scientific principles through the medium of dance by Katie Green and Green Bean Dance.
On Tuesday October 4th, Science Boffins will present “Earth, Water, Air and Fire” and on Thursday October 6th, James Soper will produce bangs and flashes in his Ultimate Science show.
Another animal show – not for the faint-hearted – will include meerkats, a python and a crocodile. Mind your fingers! Matt Pritchard will produce some Science Magic and Science Boffins will explain that Science is Fun. 46
D I S C O V E R I N G
Both shows start at 7.15 p.m. and tickets will be £2.50 (See the Events page). Of course, an event like this is very expensive, particularly as the schools get all of their presentations free of charge. This year’s festival is going to cost in the region of £15,000 which sounds very expensive until you realise that over 4,500 children will be getting some experience of science. The committee are still some way short of their target so, if you feel that you would like to help to bring the wonder into young people’s lives with some sponsorship, they would be very pleased to hear from you. Discovering . . .
the Waterton family
The Waterton Arms in Church Street, Deeping St James, is a reminder of the village’s connections with a distinguished family of landed gentry reckoned to be one of the oldest in England and the inn uses their coat of arms on its sign. Charles Waterton was a naturalist and explorer who travelled widely in South America during the early years of the 19th century and established a collection of birds and animals in his home at Walton Hall in Yorkshire. The family were proud of their lineage, claiming ancestry back to the 12th century and included Sir Thomas More (1478-1535), the renaissance writer, statesman and Catholic martyr. They had originally lived in Lincolnshire and in 1877, his son Edmund Waterton, returned to the county to buy the 18th century manor house at Deeping St James, believing that their ancestors had once owned the property, calling it Waterton Hall and adding two new wings. In 1880 he built a small Roman Catholic chapel adjacent to the hall, dedicating it to Our Lady of Lincoln and St Guthlac.
Archive photograph of the old Deeping manor house from circa 1930.
Edmund, who was twice married, soon established a reputation as the squire, a kindly gentleman and great sportsman who organised many events in the parkland surrounding his home as well as water sports on the river but ironically, he died tragically at the age of 57 while participating in one of the very events he had helped arrange. In July 1887, during a sports meeting in the park to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, he insisted on entering several of the athletic competitions and was a team member in one of the tug of war contests when the rope broke and he fell badly and was fatally injured. He was given a grand funeral in the chapel and his obituary in the local newspaper reported that “he was a true English gentleman, kind-hearted, genial, just and generous. The poor have lost a real benefactor.” After Edmund’s death, much of his estate passed to his brother, Thomas More Waterton, who purchased the Wheatsheaf public house in Church Street and renamed it the Waterton Arms to mark the family’s presence in the locality although by the turn of the century he had left the village. Waterton Hall was sold at auction to the Marquess of Exeter, becoming known once again as the manor house and home to the Dowager Marchioness, although it was subsequently demolished around 1970 to make way for a new housing estate.

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram
Uncertain Times Ahead Welcome to the motoring section of the magazine. I hope you have had an enjoyable summer around Bourne and the Deepings. As the season begins to come to an end, as is always the case, everything else also continues to move on, and there is a fair amount of uncertainty around. The success of the recent school examination results is being met with talk of a £44,000 debt for university tuition fees by graduates. And whilst new £5 notes have just started to make an appearance, our interest rates refuse to make any positive gains. We might spare a thought for what the uncertainty surrounding the EU and the UK’s vote to exit, means for our motoring trade. How our leaving will affect the new car market and the subsequent effect on
the second-hand car market for instance is unclear. “I foresee all sorts of unforeseen problems”, remarked the astute Sir Humphrey in “Yes Minister” many moons ago. The outward appearance of many things on our roads is likely to change as a result of us leaving the EU: road traffic signs and roadwork traffic cones and even the appearance of our driving licences – these have all evolved over the years to comply with EU directives. Within my own circle of the driver- training industry, there is much hope that exiting the EU will bring opportunities for positive change. We will see. Wishing you all safe journeys on our roads.

| Spotlight on Schools
Kirkstone House School and its Bespoke Education Kirkstone House is a unique, small, independent school which accepts pupils of all abilities and provides each with a bespoke educational experience. Celebrating excellent GCSE results this year, Mrs Corinne Jones, Headmistress, spoke about the ethos of the school. “We are an entirely inclusive school and our success lies in the fact that we enable all to achieve both their personal and academic potential. We never lose sight of the individual at the heart of all we do and our mission statement is that ‘The Individual Counts’. As a school, we understand that happy, well-motivated pupils who have excellent self-esteem, who care for themselves and for each other, are what make a school a success.” Our small classes mean that each pupil is known personally and thrives within a family atmosphere. Behaviour is outstanding and pupils are therefore able to make the most of all of the academic and extra- curricular opportunities on offer. We have a very wide curriculum, offering pupils a wide range of GCSEs and vocational BTEC subjects.
Current trends in education have seen the establishment of very large educational institutions, but for some pupils a smaller environment enables them to flourish best. GCSE years are key and recent years have seen many parents taking up our “two year package” for independent education for this crucial period. Pupils settle quickly and respond well to receiving lots of individual attention. Our Junior school also has small classes, and pupils are not restricted in terms of their age. A bright child might move up to study Maths and English with children of an older age whilst others may need one-to-one support to bring them on. Kirkstone is ultimately a happy school. Our children achieve very well, but we always have a sense of perspective and proportion, ensuring that they enjoy their childhood and grow up to value others and to have personal self esteem. Open day is on Thursday 6th October from 9-30am -12noon and 4-30pm -6-30pm.Prospective families should call 01778560350 or email Mr R. | Police Patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley
Sergeant Mosley’s Musings: - Hare Coursing “Operation Galileo” has been set up to tackle hare coursing and protect farmers from damage and criminality. I have heard many people ask, “Why do police treat this so seriously?” The fact of the matter is that it is an offence and there are often other offences associated with it, as well as threats and abuse towards those in the farming community. A “hare coursing event” is a competition in which dogs are, by the use of live hares, assessed as to their skill in hunting hares, and it often involves gambling. Offenders will travel great distances to take part and I myself dealt with four in the spring who were from Taunton.
There are several pieces of legislation which cover hunting and how we deal with offenders, but the main ones are: •
Hunting Act 2004 – which covers hunting wild animals with dogs and allows searching for and seizing ‘anything’ to do with hunting a wild animal or coursing, including vehicles and dogs.
• Game Act 1831 – which covers trespass in the pursuit of game. • Police Reform Act 2002 – which covers the seizing of vehicles used in an anti-social manner.
After several months’ respite for farmers, September is traditionally a time when hare coursers begin to become active once more, continuing until the end of March. During the busiest months of November and December, an average of fifteen calls a day were being received across Lincolnshire, with the majority in the south of the county. From September 1st 2015 to March 31st 2016, there were 176 men arrested or reported for summons. This was compared to 65 men in the 2014/15 season and represented a 170% increase in our enforcement activity. In addition, 19 vehicles were seized and 93 other men were dealt with by other disruption tactics and enforcement action such as “Direction to Leave” orders, traffic offences, etc. In a change in tactics, three dogs were also seized. This is a tactic which will continue this year.
This year marks a new tactic in which Lincolnshire Police have launched a new, free text service to pass information about hare coursers anonymously. If you have any information, please text ‘HARE’ followed by the details to 80800. To report a crime, call 101, or 999 if in progress.
