One to share amongst the Christmas dinner guests as you tuck in to your turkey : A friend recently returned home with his wife, having just enjoyed a meal to celebrate their thirtieth wedding anniversary. As she opened the small box which he presented her with, expecting at least a ring, she was surprised to see just two paracetamol tablets. “But I haven’t got a headache”, she told him. “Aha !!!” he replied triumphantly. As we edge towards the end of what to many people, has been the most unpredictable year ever, (think Brexit, Leicester City, Trump and, er … Ed Balls to win “Strictly”?) life continues apace and Christmas will soon be upon us. In this month’s issue, you can find so much Christmas-related “stuff”, and it’s been so exciting for us all, having the task of gathering it all together, preparing it and laying it all in front of you in an attractive way – a bit like getting that turkey and trimmings on to the plate on time, I suppose. (“What would you know about that?” I can hear a certain voice in my ear!) Enjoy the read and have a wonderful Christmas.

Words from the Mayor Councillor Wayne Lester The Remembrance Sunday service was well organised and attended by members of our community and uniformed services. I always get a lump in my throat when Bob Buff of the RAOB reads out the “poppy poem” in church, and the names of all those fallen men who lived in this town are read out. We should always remain thankful for their sacrifice. I hope to join the Lincolnshire Cadet Force at Burghley House again this year, to undertake the 5Km. Santa Fun Run. We will all be raising funds for the Deepings Men’s Group, besides my also fund-raising for the Cadet Force. If you would like to donate and/or come along to see the sea of red, it’s on Sunday December 11th at 11:30 a.m. Donations can be made at the Town Hall and the Deeping Library and Community Centre.

Council News

I have attached a photo of the Great African Welly Walk 2016. Sorry this was not able to feature in last month, but I thought it would be nice to see the children’s faces - they put in so much hard work to raise funds. I have been out and about this month, attending the Bourne Civic Dinner, the Lincolnshire Cadet Force Annual Dinner in Grantham, a Rock and Roll Charity Night in Grantham for the Mayor’s Charities and finally, the Order of St John and St Mary service in Spalding, with the Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire.

The corner on Blenheim Way has seen a number of accidents, and we would urge all users, leading in to the winter months, to take care on this corner and slow down. We have been informed by Lincolnshire County Council that the road would benefit from a non-slip surface and some additional signage. They have advised that they will allocate money and hopefully, work will go ahead by mid-2017. The new fencing around our John Eve field has been completed. If you are interested in putting your name down for an allotment plot, please contact the Clerk to express an interest. We are planning for next year’s Budget. If you think the town needs to support a good cause, or needs some improvements in certain areas, we would like to hear from you. Don’t forget, you can meet your councillor at the Deeping Library on December 3rd, from 10.00am – 12.00pm, or you can pop in to the Town Hall to see our Clerk, Monday to Friday 9.00am – 12.00pm.

Fenland Green Power Co-operative awards £10,000 funding to local charity Local charity, Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT), has been awarded £10,000 funding from the Fenland Green Power Co-operative. With these funds, combined with further match-funding, the charity will aim to deliver over £45,000 energy savings for lowincome households, making a real impact in the community and improving residents’ quality of life in South Holland. The work is expected to start in early 2017. There are over 40,000 households in this area, of which more than 3,000 are estimated to be “fuel poor”. In addition to this, 37.5% of households are offgrid, which is more than double the national average. PECT aims to reduce fuel poverty in the area, by providing vulnerable households with the information and resources needed to stay warm and healthy. The funding for this project has been granted to PECT by the Fenland Green Power

Co-operative, which own two turbines at Vine House Farm in Deeping St Nicholas, funded by a members’ subscription of over 1,000 share holders. The two turbines produce an annual output of 9.5million kWh, sufficient for powering over 2,000 homes and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 5,000 tonnes a year. Profits from the turbines are distributed to co-operative members and to community funds, such as sustainable energy educational activities in the Fens.

Carly Leonard, CEO of Peterborough Environment City Trust, meets Fenland Green Power Co-operative Board members, David Chenery, Nicholas Watt, and Andrew Moore, at the site of the wind turbines in Deeping St Nicholas. For more information about PECT and its work, please visit the website at www.pect.org. uk. To find out more about the Fenland Green Power CoOperative take a look at www.fens.coop.

Be safe and be seen on the roads Pedestrians, cyclists and riders are encouraged to be safe and be seen, as winter approaches. Statistics reveal that shorter days lead to a rise in road casualties, particularly for the most vulnerable groups such as children, cyclists, motorcyclists and the elderly. Clair George, road safety officer for the Safer Peterborough Prevention and Enforcement Service, said, “Evidence indicates that there is a rise in the number of collisions at this time of year, both in the

10

D I S C O V E R I N G

mornings and afternoons, as road users adapt to a combination of changing factors such as poorer weather conditions and pedestrians not wearing reflective or bright clothing.” Parents and guardians with school children should make sure their child can be clearly seen by wearing something ‘hi-vis’. During 2015, 90 young people aged 15 and under were injured on Peterborough roads, three suffering serious injuries. The number of cyclists injured

Deeping | December 2016

in 2015 was 99, including one fatality, and the number of pedestrians injured was 52, including seven seriously. Cyclists should also remember it is an offence to cycle at night without a front light, a rear light and a red rear reflector. Young people can also find out more about the Be Safe Be Seen campaign by visiting the ‘Tales of the Road’ website at www.talesoftheroad.direct.gov. uk The website contains games, video clips, as well as road safety information for parents.

Join Thorpe Hall Hospice’s “Lights of Love” Carol Concert For hundreds of people across the area, “Lights of Love” has become a key event in the festive calendar. This year’s event, taking place on Sunday December 11th, will focus on giving guests the opportunity to remember, reflect and celebrate the lives of people close to them.

New arrival!

Every single day, it costs £8,000 to provide their fabulous services. As a charity, over a half of that must come from fundraising. In their silver anniversary year, what could you do to help? Please visit: www. sueryder.org/thorpehall or phone 01733 225999.

The centrepiece will, as usual, be Thorpe Hall’s Lights of Love trees, decked out with handwritten messages of love, remembrance and inspiration. Peterborough Concert Band will be playing a selection of favourite carols for guests to join in with and Hereward Harmony Barbershop Chorus will be providing entertainment with festive songs.

Discovering Deeping have some lovely news to share with you all. Becky Daines (one of our Discovering team) gave birth to a gorgeous, and very cuddly, baby boy, named Tarquin Badger, at 9.14am on October 24th. He weighed in at 5lb 10 oz. Congratulations Becky!

While the carol concert will take place outside, with the mansion house as the backdrop, Thorpe Hall’s Coffee Shop will be open for traditional warming snacks. The entertainment will start at 6pm in the grounds of Thorpe Hall Hospice, in Longthorpe, Peterborough and finish at 7.15pm. Entrance is free. This year Sue Ryder is marking twenty-five years of incredible care at Thorpe Hall Hospice.

Thorpe Hall’s Lights of Love event is the chance to remember, reflect and celebrate this Christmas

Anyone for a ‘Sleep Easy’? On Friday November 18th, YMCA Cambridgeshire and Peterborough is hosting a “Sleep Easy” fundraising event, to raise awareness of sleeping rough and raise money for young, homeless people in our region. Peterborough’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Keith Sharp, will be supporting the event, which is taking place in the grounds of Peterborough Cathedral, and YMCA is inviting members of the public to register to take part in the challenging event … for just £10. Running from 7pm on Friday 18th to 7am on Saturday November 19th, participants will be provided with food in

the evening plus breakfast, tea and coffee, entertainment and cardboard boxes, with which they can make a shelter. All funds raised for this event will go towards YMCA’s accommodation services to ensure vulnerable young people have a safe place to live. 53%

Make a Will and Join the Minority!

A fact that never ceases to amaze me is that 53% of people who died in 2014 died without a will. The other thing that amazes me is that almost every one of those 53% knew that they needed to make a will. They were going to get around to it. • 53% of people who died left their family an uncertain future. • 53% didn’t tell their family who was to receive what. • 53% didn’t give guidance about their funeral. • 53% made no attempt to save tax or secure their assets. • … and 53% didn’t mean to leave things that way! When asked, people give lots of different reasons for not getting around to it – they were too young, they didn’t own enough, it was too complex, or they didn’t want to face the fact they might die.

Call us on 01778 382723 to discuss.

On the other hand, the 47% who died with a will gave their loved ones clarity and certainty. They took a couple of hours out of their lives to make sure that things were simple for their family after they had passed away. The one thing that all of our clients agree on is that making a will was nowhere near as complex or difficult as they thought it would be. Don’t be one of the 53% - talk to Will and Probate Services today – It’s time to make a will.

| Your Health

by Empire Gym, Market Deeping

Boutique gyms are on the up! Christmas is almost upon us, and New Year is the time many of us reset our health and fitness goals. If you’re into New Year’s resolutions, spending more time at the gym is probably somewhere on your list. Your first time in a new gym needs to be a positive experience, and the attitude of gym staff and existing members towards you will be one of the factors which determines how long you remain, and how often you use the facility of your choice.

which include short-term contractual and up-front payment memberships. We prefer short-term flexible membership agreements, designed to assist members when life becomes challenging. We are not big on rules and are compassionate in our approach to changes in members’ real life circumstances such as injury, illness and loss of employment. We’ve developed a gym concept that integrates all kinds of training in a friendly, open-plan layout. Our impressive blend of high quality equipment offers great flexibility, so you’ll never have to wait for equipment and, with so many training choices, it’s really easy to keep your workout fresh and interesting.

Select an establishment where staff and existing members are welcoming and friendly, where membership options are appropriate to your needs, and where membership stability is reliant upon the provision of top quality service, rather than tying you into an inflexible long-term agreement.

We provide an exemplary service with clean, fresh, well-maintained facilities where members are welcomed with a smile and train in optimum conditions, assisted by reliable advice from highly qualified and dedicated staff, when required.

Boutique gyms are becoming more popular and Empire Gym in Market Deeping is a great example. We specialise in gym-based cardio, free weights, TRX and functional training; we include stripped back fitness classes, (free to members), focussing on high intensity interval training, indoor cycling, gym circuits and personal training. Unlike the large fitness and leisure groups, we openly publish our fees and offer a range of membership options

In short, we offer a great service first and receive membership loyalty in return. We do not rely on long-term, inflexible contracts to keep our members. Call us for more details

New Year – New Destinations

Still have a few holiday days to use before the end of January? Dreaming of a quick getaway before the new school term starts? January offers some fantastic value travel opportunities, and destinations tend to be much quieter after the festive season. Read on to find out about five of the best places for a holiday this January… Winter warmth: Barbados

As one of the most southerly Caribbean islands, Barbados enjoys even better winter sun than most, with temperatures usually around the high 20s in January. A ruggedly beautiful island, fringed by stunning white sand beaches and dotted with luxurious hotels, Barbados is everything you want from a Caribbean destination. On this little island you’ll find a warm welcome and authentic cuisine sitting alongside fine dining, allinclusive leisure, and luxury spas.

A land of snow and ice: Reykjavik

The days might be short near the Arctic Circle in winter but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to enjoy in Iceland in January. Treat yourself to a dip in its famous blue lagoon and explore Iceland’s other famous sites, such as the UNESCO world heritage site of Thingvellir National Park, the hot springs at Geysir and the stunning Gullfoss Waterfall.

In Iceland in January, though, the light is the star of the show. Wonder at the soft daylight of the short days and, if you’re lucky, the incredible Aurora Borealis.

with tasty tapas and authentic flamenco music, then head west to the coast to enjoy the beautiful beaches and historic towns of Jerez, Cadiz and Seville.

Europe’s sunniest capital: Malta

Romantic landscapes and log fires: The Scottish Highlands

Malta offers up a mind-blowing 5,000 years of culture as well as one of the mildest winter climates in Europe. With temperatures in the mid-teens, it might not be swimming weather but you can still enjoy picturesque walks to explore Malta’s beautiful coves and beaches. Make time to soak up some culture too, from Neolithic temples to Roman catacombs and forts built by the Knights of St John.

A land of contrasts: Andalucía

Andalucía might attract crowds to its beaches in the summer months but January has its own appeal. In the mountains around Granada it is cold enough to ski, and there’s the opportunity to explore this atmospheric city’s Alhambra Palace. Warm yourself

If winter sun isn’t top of your wish-list for a January break, we suggest the beautiful Scottish Highlands. Might the promise of taking in rugged highland scenery before warming yourself with a wee dram of whisky in front of a cosy fire tempt you away this January? We can’t promise balmy weather but we can promise wonderfully romantic landscapes, luxury hotels, great dining, distillery tours and maybe even a spot of skiing at Aviemore.

The Potting Shed

• Sow some broad beans in a sheltered spot- I did this last year and had a really good crop, free from black fly! • Keep picking leeks and parsnips, but if the weather is very wet check that the leeks are not getting waterlogged and rotting.

N

ot much to do this month in the allotment, especially if you have “put it to bed” for the winter months. Now is a good time, then, to clean tools, seed trays, pots and other equipment, as it will help prevent any diseases carrying over to infect next year’s seedlings. Also, give the shed a good tidy out and clean. Some jobs that you can do are:• If you intend to grow peas or beans next year, dig in plenty of organic matter as they require nutrient- rich soil. • Lift the last of your carrots, turnips and beetroot, and put a mulch of straw around parsnips to prevent them being frozen into the ground. • Continue topping up compost and leaf mould bins. • As long as the soil is not frozen, you can continue winter digging. • Earth up Brussels sprouts stems to keep them secure from strong winds and remove any brown or yellow leaves.

One way I enjoy using up my vegetables is making a hearty soup – I use carrots, potatoes, parsnips, onions, leeks and anything else that I may have (even left -over cooked veg). I then whizz them in the food processor so they are in small pieces, put them in a large saucepan, cover them with water and add a few chicken stock cubes (vegetable, if you are a vegetarian), bring it to the boil, and skim off any scum. Then I add between half and a whole small bag of orange lentils. Simmer this until well-cooked and enjoy with some good crusty bread. I usually make a big stock pot full, and freeze the rest in measured portions. At Christmas, I add any left-over turkey, ham, pork and cooked veg. As you can see, it is not a precise science as I add what I have, but always make sure there are plenty of potatoes, carrots and onion. Well that’s about it for this year. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year!

• Make sure your winter brassicas are netted to prevent pigeons eating them.

• Bare-rooted fruit trees can still be planted if the soil is suitable – not frozen or water logged.

The world’s craziest rules of the road Believe it or not, the first fifteen in the following list are in fact true. 1 In Tennessee, shooting at an animal from your car is forbidden, with one exception: it is not illegal to draw your weapon on a whale! 2 A law in Nevada forbids anyone from placing a park bench in the middle of the road. 3 In Oklahoma, it’s important to know that it’s illegal to read comic books while driving your car. 4 A law in Alaska forbids motorists from driving around with a dog attached to the roof. 5 In Cyprus, you can forget about having a snack while at the wheel. It’s even illegal to have a drink of water. 6 The citizens of Denmark like to consider all eventualities. Danish law states that all drivers must check over their cars before setting off to make sure that everything is in order. They should pay particular attention to ensuring that there’s no one lying in front of the car wheels. 7 Did you know that when you’re driving a gorilla around in your vehicle, it’s a good idea to put it in the passenger seat? In Massachusetts, it’s illegal to put them in the back of the vehicle. 8 A law in Luxembourg states that all car-owners must have windscreen wipers installed on their vehicle. However, there’s no law stating that you have to have a windscreen!

9 In Germany, if you’re driving on a highway, running out of fuel is forbidden. 10 Swiss rules require you not only to stop at a level crossing, but also to turn off your engine. 11 Did you know that if you take your life into your hands getting behind the wheel in China, and more specifically in Beijing, you must under no circumstances stop for pedestrians? You could be arrested. 12 A Californian law forbids women from driving a car dressed in a bathrobe. 13 You’d be forgiven for questioning why this rule exists, but in San Francisco, California, you’re not allowed to clean your car with dirty underwear. 14 In Thailand, bare-chested driving is strictly prohibited. 15 In Ohio, you can be fined if you’re caught going around a roundabout more than 100 times. … and finally, number 16, when driving in the Mexican Formula 1 Grand Prix, ensure that you’re at least twice as tall as the track marshals (as the recent image of the lawabiding Lewis Hamilton clearly shows!)

How to stop Windows 10 update restarting your PC during the day Many of you will have experienced it. You’re in the middle of something and your PC suddenly wants to restart for updates, or even restarts without prompting you.

In the window that pops up, select the time that you want to restrict from restarts for updates, (in the example shown from 8am-8pm.)

Microsoft have got more and more aggressive on forcing updates on us, but you can set aside a ‘work time’ where the updates will not be installed.

Rather annoyingly, Microsoft limit this to a 12 hour period (shows how hard they work over there!!)

At the bottom left of your screen click on the Start button and select Options (the cog)

Select Update & Security

Click on Save

Select Change active hours

Click on Restart Options

Make sure that the ‘Restart Options’ setting is set to Off

But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

WHILE we are being increasingly warned about telephone scams and credit card fraud, police have issued a warning about a seasonal Call Charlotte on crime, of which any of us could become a victim. | Pets and Vets

By Alder Veterinary Practice, Bourne

What Happened to the Vets?

When I qualified as a veterinary surgeon, thirty-four years ago, it was recognised that the veterinary profession was probably the most trusted and respected of all professions. Our main aim was to treat and look after the animals in our care to the best of our ability. Now I commonly hear things like: “All the vets are interested in is the money”, “The first question I was asked was whether or not my pet was insured” and “Every time I go to the vet they try and sell me something”. We have lost much of the trust that we originally had. Fortunately, most vets still really care about you and your pet, so what has changed? All veterinary surgeries are a business and they have to make enough money to be able to continue giving their services. When I qualified, veterinary businesses could only be owned by veterinary surgeons, but even in those times a small number of people came to realise the potential earning power of veterinary businesses and I believe this was the start of when we, as a profession, became less trusted. This situation worsened when non-vets were allowed to own veterinary businesses and this signalled the start of corporate ownership. Recently, two of the largest veterinary corporates were floated on the Stock Exchange.

It is true that there are many more operations and procedures that can be performed now which are often expensive, but this just leaves many people behind when they find they cannot afford it and nobody will allow them credit to pay over a period of time. Charging structures have changed, and there has been a 40% increase in veterinary fees in the last five years in many places. Then there is the up-selling and other business practices. If we are not careful, the next thing could perhaps be global ownership of veterinary businesses! We have to move with the times, and we need to make sure we offer services that our clients want and benefit from, but we must also keep an eye on why we do this job in the first place, which is for the love of the animals.

This does not mean that the vets working in these situations care any less about animals or do not do their very best for you. However, there is more financial influence. For a start, the shareholders want a good return on their investment, then the directors expect good salaries as well as the managers, and then finally the vets and nurses need paying. This whole structure requires the vets to earn more, as compared to privately owned surgeries, (unless the owner wants large houses, expensive cars and a yacht!)

Talking Turkey … but not for everyone! • It is estimated that the UK will be consuming approximately ten million turkeys this month, with the majority of families (76%) around the UK serving it up as the centrepiece of their festive meal this Christmas. • Turkey is a relative newcomer to the Yuletide table - it was a luxury right up until the 1950s, when they became more widely available, aided by the increased availability of “the fridge”. Traditional Christmas fare used to include roast swan, pheasants and peacocks. A special treat was a roast boar’s head, decorated with holly and fruit.

Discovering . . . the Town Hall

The town hall has been the centre of local affairs in communities across the land for centuries, an imposing building which usually houses the city or town council and its associated departments and their employees. It also usually functions as the official headquarters of the mayor and the place where council meetings are held together with other significant events.

Most of our larger towns have one and those which exist in the less populated areas of rural England may be regarded as a sign of the pride which the people felt in the management of their affairs which was sufficient to finance such a venture. A town hall is recorded in Market Deeping as early as 1563 when it was also used as a court house but new premises on the same site were proposed in the early 19th century and members of the public were invited to help foot the bill. Thirty-nine substantial subscriptions were received, the biggest being £20 each from the rector, the Rev William Hillyard, and local businessman William Goodale, totalling £285 in all. Many smaller contributions were also made and the new building, described by a local newspaper as “a neat structure”, was erected in 1839 at a cost of £320 [£37,000 at today’s values], a remarkable expenditure for a market town with a population of 1,219 [1841 census]. It stands on the north side of the market place and was designed in the Tudor Gothic style by the Bourne architect Thomas Pilkington (1799-1889) and constructed of limestone with ashlar quoins and a Collyweston slate roof. The building also has a single but distinctive A-shaped gable and leaded lights while inside there is a baluster staircase with a curved handrail leading to offices situated over a ground floor waiting room. In the early years, felons were kept in the cells below until the police station opened across the road in 1880. The Town Hall has been in continual use ever since and was Grade II listed as being of historic and architectural interest in 1987. There were originally two main doors, one on each side, but that on the left has been converted to a window. The Market Deeping Literary Institute met there from 1848 for reading and games followed by the town’s once active Social Club in 1909 but most importantly, the parish council, now the town council, has been holding meetings there since it was formed by the Local Government Act of 1894. | Police Patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings: – Don’t let them get away with it at Christmas!

How often in the lead up to Christmas can you see into houses in the evenings, with curtains open, displaying the Christmas tree in the window with its lights sparkling, and a small pile of presents under the tree, waiting to be opened? Christmas is the time when we stock our homes with the latest electronic gadgets, computers, jewellery and must-have accessories. Unfortunately, it provides thieves with the perfect incentive and the opportunity to commit burglaries. By taking some simple precautions, you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim. Leave lights on timers, coming on and going off at different set times. Invest in motion sensor security lights to light up your home’s exterior. When it comes to outdoor festive lighting, install outdoor electrical outlets and don’t feed the cable through an open window. Do not place any presents under the Christmas tree until Christmas Eve. If you cannot avoid this, make sure that when you’re not at home, your curtains are drawn. Set your house alarm if you have one and ensure all windows, doors and gates are secure. Always secure your garden shed or outbuilding like you would your home.

Dispose of gift packaging carefully. Fold boxes so that they do not advertise your new presents. Shred or burn any personal paperwork and envelopes with your name and address displayed. Be careful though not to shred any important warranty details! If you’re going away at Christmas, be sure to cancel any newspaper or milk subscriptions. Arrange for a neighbour to move your post and to park on the driveway to help create the impression someone is home. Register your property for FREE on Immobilise at http://www.immobilise.com . This is a national property database that the police can access and search, if we recover suspected stolen property. Look out for your neighbours. If you see anything suspicious or a crime in progress call 999. For further information, have a look at www.lincs. police.uk/get-help-advice Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! | Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram Hazards and How to Cope With Them Welcome to you all, and let me start by wishing you a peaceful Christmas.

few seconds? What are the risks?

The following is an excerpt from one of the BIG TOM Driving Videos that my learner customers are given access to, in order to help them prepare for their driving training with BIG TOM.

Decision Making. Consider the options you have available for dealing with this hazard. There may be more than one. Attempt to decide on an option that favours your particular strengths.

“A key skillset for learner drivers is the developing of an effective method for managing driving around hazards that crop up. Hazards that cause us to change speed and/or direction I refer to as critical incidents, as they absolutely MUST be dealt with, but the question that learners want to know is… “How?” Let me split this up into separate skills: Identification. Try to develop your ability to spot these types of hazards in good time. I recommend at least ten seconds before you arrive at it – this is key, because it buys you thinking time, AND time to perform the necessary actions. Assessment. How will this hazard affect you? Can you anticipate how this hazard may develop in the next

Reflect. What went well, what could have been better, would you like to try that again? By practising and refining this skillset, it will help you to develop a technique that will be useful to you for the rest of your driving life. It encourages you to make decisions that are centred around the analysis of your strengths/weaknesses, and furthermore, when you are practising with BIG TOM, do not concern yourself with making incorrect decisions - that is how we all learn. It is the act of making conscious decisions, and reflecting on the outcome that will enable you to develop your self-awareness, which is a life-long skill.” Safe driving to you all around Christmas time!
