Introduction

Welcome to Your March Issue. Time for a fresh spring look, as this month’s magazine comes to you with several changes in its layout, but remains chockfull of interesting and useful features and ideas. Mother’s Day on March 26th gives us all the opportunity to show mum just how much she means to us by showering her with hugs, kisses and gifts. Why not try your hand at our competition this month? Those Valentine’s Day flowers she received will probably need replacing by now! Have fun!

Claire x

Staggering to think that this month, the national treasure that is Dame Vera Lynn will celebrate her birthday on March 20th by becoming the first singer in history to have released a new album at the age of one hundred – surely a case of “We’ll meet again …and again … and yet again”! Keep on rocking, girl! This month’s issue contains all the things you’ll need to help you make the most of the springtime, whether it’s in the home or out in the garden. That extra evening light, when the clocks go forward an hour on March 26th, will make us all feel that summer’s not too far away either. Enjoy the read!

A Little Something Fabulous

ust over a year ago, Teresa Kerr-Morgan and her son Joe, (21), opened the doors of “A Little Something” on Bourne’s South Street. A wide range of shabby chic furniture and assorted gifts and accessories filled the shop, and the people came in large numbers and beautified their homes with some original and, at times, quirky pieces of furniture.

for the fashionistas of the town, the opportunity to pick up some quality garments, which Teresa agrees are particularly competitively priced. Lagenlook Clothing, Izabel of London and Apricot are the leading designer labels for the ladies clothing items on display. Tasteful costume jewellery and some sterling silver pieces, alongside gloves, scarves and a collection of bags, all add to the overall impression of a classy accumulation, created by someone with a keen eye for what, together, will look fabulous. There is also the recognition that the provision of “plus-size garments” can create the fabulous feeling too.

However, acknowledging that the time had come to move away from this particular range of merchandise, Teresa decided that Bourne was well overdue an Italian designer clothing outlet. This inspired change of direction has led to the addition of the name “Fabulous” above her shop front but, more importantly

Deeping Man to “Bump” the London Marathon for Cancer Charity A Deeping man is busy training to compete in the London Marathon on April 23rd 2017, to raise funds for Children with Cancer. Gareth Williams has been raising funds for the charity for a number of years after a close friend’s son was diagnosed with cancer. Gareth’s training schedule is progressing well, despite the winter weather. However, what he cannot train for is the costume that he hopes to wear on the day. Children with Cancer use the distinctive “Mr Men” logo to link with children. Gareth hopes to run

dressed in a neoprene Mr Bump costume – everyone’s favourite Mr Man! The costume weighs approximately seven kilos and is not very aerodynamic! Almost 4,000 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer every year in the UK - that’s over ten every day! The types of cancer affecting children are quite different from the cancers that affect teenagers and young adults, Thanks to investment in research and treatment, survival has increased but there is still a great deal of research needed

into childhood cancer. Gareth is a coach with the Market Deeping Dragons MiniRugby Team, and lives in West Deeping. His amazing dedication to this valuable cause is hoping to raise over £3,000 for Children with Cancer. To make a donation, please visit: www.virginmoneygiving.com/ garethwilliamsmarathonchallenge

MEN UNITED IN SONG 2017: SUPPORTING PROSTATE CANCER UK New Year, new you? Are you looking for a fresh challenge which takes you out of your comfort zone, with a great social scene to boot? Then look no further…

I’d met some great friends, and I’d drunk far more beers than I’d ever imagined! Performing on stage at the Broadway Theatre was a really memorable experience!”

such a cracking bunch of blokes. There’s a real camaraderie among them, and a tight-knit aspect to the group makes them a force to be reckoned with”.

Following its phenomenal success last year, Men United in Song is back for 2017, once again raising money for Prostate Cancer UK. Launching in April, the project will sign up a minimum of forty local men with a range of previous singing experience (including none!), to rehearse over twelve weeks for a gala charity concert on Saturday June 24th. Over one hundred men participated last year, raising many thousands of pounds for the charity.

“I joined Men United in Song full of trepidation, but by the end of the first rehearsal everything was different,” agrees Adrian Woodcock. “The group of guys was amazing everyone was made to feel welcome. Few years in your life can be described as life changing, but 2016 has definitely been one of them!”

Men United in Song kicks off with introduction sessions at the Broadway Theatre on Wednesday 29th, Thursday 30th and Friday 31st March (7-9pm). Rehearsals will be on Thursday evenings from 7.459.45pm, starting on Thursday 6th April.

“Two children and a full-on role at work make for little time to switch off, down tools and do something for myself,” says Matthew Johnson, who participated in the project last year. “After weeks driving past countless banners advertising Men United in Song, I decided to bite the bullet and give it a go. Suddenly I had a hobby,

Jack Grover adds: “Even if going to rehearsal was the last thing I felt like doing on the walk back from work, as soon as we started the warm-up those stresses just disappeared. Music is so good for the soul.” Men United in Song is not all about the singing, or even about the fundraising. There’s a fantastic social scene, too - after all, the Broadway Theatre has its very own bar! William Prideaux, the director of the project, says, “It’s a real privilege to work with

Absolutely no previous experience is required to join, just enthusiasm and a willingness to get stuck in. William adds: “We’re not looking for a Gary Barlow or an Alfie Boe, just guys who want to come along and enjoy singing together. Come along to an introduction session and find out more; we’re convinced those who do will enjoy themselves and discover how great singing can be.” For further information contact Jo on 01733 425194, or email info@ peterboroughmvchoir.org.uk.

Mayor

Words from the Mayor Councillor Wayne Lester

I have been very busy recently, and was pleased to be invited along to a Charity Race Night in Bourne. The Mayor of Bourne and I did a lap of the Corn Exchange, dressed in ostrich outfits, and yes I did win the race … by a short neck! Well done to Colin Pattison and his team for a fun night and raising over £800 for his chosen charities. I also ventured to Sleaford for a “Burns Night”, where the company and food were great, as was the chance to see a famous local band perform, all with a distinctive Scottish flavour.

place around April / May in readiness for the new cutting season. After months of negotiation with Lincolnshire County Council, it is looking favourable that improvement works to the zebra crossing and the widening of the footpath on Godsey Lane, opposite the William Hildyard School, are in the “works planned for commencement in the autumn”, subject to final approval. Don’t forget you can meet your councillor at the Deeping Library on Saturday March 4th, from 10.00am – 12.00pm, or you can pop in to the Town Hall to see our Clerks Monday to Friday, 9.00am – 12.00pm. Thanks for reading.

Forthcoming Event I will be holding a Charity Dinner Dance on Saturday March 11th at the Deepings Sports and Social Club. There will be entertainment to start the evening off, a great menu and music to dance the night away. I do hope you can join us at the event, and if you are interested in attending, please contact the Town Clerk. You can make your booking at mdtc.townclerk@btconnect.com All proceeds from the evening will go to the Mayor’s Charities, The Deeping Men’s Group and The Army Cadet Force Deeping Detachment. I would also appreciate your donating any suitable prizes that we can use to raise extra funds on the night in our raffle. I look forward to seeing you there and/or if you can help with a prize, please contact the Town Clerk. Council News We welcomed our new Councillor, Virginia Moran, to her first full council meeting since the election. I wish her well and look forward to working with her. We are already planning for the Christmas Market, so if you would like to be part of the working group, or have any suggestions to enhance the event, please contact our Town Clerk. We are currently seeking tenders for the cutting of the grass verges and hope to have a contractor in 10

Conveyancing - Advice to Take Away the Worries

F

or many people, the start of spring means the beginning of the “house-hunting season”. Moving home is an exciting time, but because it is not an everyday event, it can be frightening and could even cause stress and worry.

Buyers often don’t realise that on top of the cost of the house itself, there are many other, one-off expenses involved which can soon add up, for example: mortgage application fees, survey fees, Stamp Duty, search fees, land registry fees, legal costs, removal costs and, if you are selling as well as buying, estate agents’ fees. If you are having a mortgage, your lender will carry out a basic valuation; this will only ensure that the amount they are lending you is protected. It is strongly advised that you also have an independent, more detailed survey carried out. The level of survey you need depends a lot on the individual property you are buying. Searches are an important part of the process, and there are a wide range of searches that can be carried out, to provide you with more information about the property you plan to purchase. These might include whether or not the road serving the property

is a publicly adopted highway; whether there are any mineshafts in the immediate vicinity; whether the property is subject to any planning enforcement notices and whether there are any environmental issues which could adversely affect the property. The process, from having your offer accepted to completion, usually takes about twelve weeks. However, this does depend on the chain. If the property you are purchasing is in a chain, your own purchase will be affected if someone a few links down the chain has problems with their mortgage company, or their searches reveal matters that require further investigation, or if they lose their buyer. Whether you are selling, buying or re-mortgaging your property, our approachable manner will help to guide you through what many people sometimes think can be a stressful process.

Why Use Clare Lockett, Travel Counsellor?

Clare Lockett

Travel Counsellor

Why use Clare Lockett, Travel Counsellor? I can offer you a lot of advantages. It’s not hard to do it yourself. It might even be fun! Or, it could turn into a huge disaster. Below are a few points to consider before clicking the BUY button or getting yourself into a non-refundable disaster.

Experience Think about what you do for a living. For nearly every profession, you can find a website, video, or app that gives you a way to do it yourself; doing it RIGHT is the issue. If you put your family in the wrong resort, it’s a much bigger deal. It becomes even bigger, if something goes wrong. Most people deal with planning a holiday once or twice a year. I deal with it all day, every day and I have been doing it for over twenty-three years. My livelihood fully depends on using my knowledge and experience to craft a holiday that you’ll love so much that you’ll keep coming back to me for more.

Real Deals Have you ever wondered why some cruises, resorts, or hotels seem to have cheaper deals on some websites? There’s always a reason. Sometimes, it’s a very bad reason that you won’t know about until you arrive, and then it’s too late. There’s always a reason, and a great price is not always a good deal. For example, every hotel has “undesirable” rooms they have trouble filling. It’s also no coincidence that many require full payment upon booking and are non-refundable. Even the most beautiful cruise ship has cabins they have trouble selling. The ones directly under the dance floor of the all-night disco, or the ones near the anchor chain that bangs against the side of the ship are just two examples. I know the legitimate deals from the “come-ons”. I’ve been trained to uncover the reason behind the bargain. I understand travel lingo, know what to look for and, most importantly, I know what to avoid.

the online rate, once extra charges like airport fees, taxes, surcharges and such have been added. I know these little details. I’ll make sure you are never unpleasantly surprised. You’ll always know exactly what you’ll be paying and what you’ll get for it.

Advice and Connections I can offer something you’ll never find online or in an app - professional advice. The main reason to use Clare Lockett, Travel Counsellor, is to make sure you never waste a penny on a holiday you won’t truly enjoy. There’s one more thing you’ll only get from me - relationships. A real one-to-one personal relationship with travel suppliers that can fix things, should something happen to go wrong. If a travel app messes up your reservations, you’re on your own. But with me, you’ll have an advocate on your side with connections. In other words, a human who passionately cares about your holiday as much as you do. If you feel my expertise would benefit you, then please don’t hesitate to contact me so I can help develop your exciting future travel plans.

Pre-Diabetes - The Reversible Condition - by Steve Weston

P

re-diabetes, also commonly referred to as borderline diabetes, is a growing global problem that is closely tied to obesity. Pre-diabetes is reversible but if ignored can develop into Type 2 diabetes which, whilst treatable, is currently not fully reversible.

According to Diabetes UK, over four million people in the UK already suffer from diabetes and a further eighteen million of us, (27% of the UK population), may be pre-diabetic which means our blood glucose levels are too high and unless we take some action to reduce the levels, we are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. According to NHS England, 10% of the NHS budget (ÂŁ10.5 billion) is currently spent on treating diabetes in the UK and, as 5 to 10% of all pre-diabetic people go on to develop the condition each year, the NHS budget would have to increase by a staggering ÂŁ2.4 billion per annum as a minimum just to keep pace with this potential epidemic. The maddening thing is that being pre-diabetic is reversible in many people simply by reducing blood glucose levels through diet and exercise, so being diagnosed as pre-diabetic is not necessarily the beginning of a descent into debilitating illness, but possibly the catalyst for beginning a programme to health and fitness; it really is up to the individual to choose to take the positive action required or simply accept the risk.

Diabetes UK suggests that 80% of all cases of Type 2 diabetes could be delayed or prevented through making lifestyle changes. Eating a healthy balanced diet, low in salt, sugar and fat and rich in fruit and vegetables, and being moderately physically active, is the best way of reducing your risk. It is also an important part of managing blood glucose levels and avoiding the other health complications associated with diabetes such as; heart disease, poor blood circulation which can lead to amputation of limbs, and eye damage which could lead to blindness.

Jane Macstravick and Alan Kendrick have reversed their pre-diabetes diagnosis by working out at Empire Gym 16

Health

The consequences of obesity on our health include diabetes, heart disease and cancer, all of which require expensive medical intervention to avoid early death. Britain has become an obese society where being overweight is “normal”. It is a trend three decades in the making which, according to experts, will take several more decades to reverse, but only if we can get the message over that we all have a responsibility to ourselves and our National Health Service to do something to improve our own personal health and fitness. Reducing the numbers of people descending into irreversible Type 2 diabetes can save our National Health Service billions of pounds annually, and the effects of becoming fitter as a nation will also reduce the numbers of people requiring medical interventions for other critical illnesses.

At Empire Gym we have members who joined us for the sole reason of attempting a reversal of their diagnosis of being prediabetic. With the help and encouragement of staff and fellow members, they have succeeded and are positive proof that this condition can be reversed. The current crisis in the NHS is mainstream news and, whilst the causes of the crisis are many and varied, we simply cannot ignore the fact that the UK has the highest level of obesity in Western Europe, with numbers more than trebling in the last thirty years and, on current estimates, more than half the population could be clinically obese by 2050. The cause of this rapid rise has been blamed on our modern lifestyles, including our reliance on the car, televisions, computers, desk-bound jobs and high-calorie convenient fast food. According to Professor Terence Stephenson in “Measuring Up,” a report on the nation’s obesity crisis by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, we are recognised (with some justification) in some circles as “The ‘fat man’ of Europe,” and he says, “It is no exaggeration to say that it is the biggest public health crisis facing the UK today.”

We are an ageing society with more people living into their eighties than ever before, thanks in part to the success of our National Health Service in keeping clinically ahead of the ailments caused mainly through poor diet and our collective lack of activity. The British Heart Foundation statistics indicate that physical activity in both genders declines with age (starting as early as thirty years of age), when it is necessary to remain as active as possible throughout our lives. We owe it to our National Health Service, ourselves and most importantly to the next generations, to do something positive in respect of our personal health and fitness. Regular physical activity and exercise offer immediate and long-term health benefits and can improve your quality of life. Reducing the immediate burden on our National Health Service will help to secure good health care for future generations, so resolve to becoming more active from now on. Speak to a Registered Exercise Professional at Empire Gym and when you begin your exercise programme do not give up keep going - it won’t be easy, but nothing worth having ever is. We guarantee that, when you feel the benefits, you will begin to love your gym visits. For more information contact Empire Gym.

A pain in the foot?

by Mr Matthew Phillips BSc (Hons) Podiatry, LA, POM, MChS. HCPC Registered Podiatrist

Plantar Fasciitis (fas-ee-eye-tis) Pain in the heel(s) can cause us all sorts of difficulties, and around one in ten people will suffer from plantar fasciitis in their life. It can affect people of all age groups but mostly between the ages of forty and sixty. You may feel heel pain after a long walk, as if you’re walking with a sharp stone under your heel and it may be worse first thing in the morning.

What should I do? First, get the correct diagnosis, by seeing a HCPC registered podiatrist for a biomechanical assessment; it usually takes less than an hour. The area of pain will be checked for further damage such as fractures or heel spurs before assessing your foot function both off and on the ground. If the problem is something different, your podiatrist will discuss relevant treatment for that condition or (in rare cases) refer you on for further investigation. Treatment wise, the gold standard is specially selected orthotics, along with specific stretching to work the muscles surrounding the plantar fascia, providing relief. You may not see a fast improvement; most cases report significant improvement over three months, but it can take a lot longer. In the meantime, paracetamol or an anti-inflammatory could bring relief. Wrapping a bag of ice in a towel and pressing it against the area for ten minutes at a time will help with any swelling to the area. Anything else I should know? HCPC podiatrists will always provide you with information about the most successful evidence-based treatments for your injury. We always tailor a treatment plan to suit the individual because we know that your pain and lifestyle is unique to you. When being assessed, feel free to ask as many questions as you need to.

Picture: American Physiotherapy Association

So what is it? The plantar fascia is a band of fibrous tissue which runs from the calcaneal tuberosity (front of the base of the heel) to the base of your metatarsophalangeal joints (the “ball” of your foot). When stretched or overused, it can cause tiny tears to appear, usually next to where it joins at the heel. The pain can also occur in the middle of your arch (instep) or even occasionally underneath the toes. Why might you get it? There are a number of reasons. It could be that you are on your feet for long hours at work, perhaps on a hard floor. If you exercise regularly, a change in the ground may trigger a reaction, along with poorly fitting or inappropriate footwear, a lack of cushioning or arch support. It could be a sudden stretching of the sole of your foot, carrying excess weight, or it may be down to the function (movement) of your foot and the structures around it.

ou would think that juggling responsibilities such as running a house, feeding a family, amusing children, working, after-school activities and socialising would be more than enough to keep a busy mum in fantastic shape. Surely, when she finally gets to flop in the chair at the end of the evening, she should have burned off enough calories for a little glass of wine or a piece of cake? So, why is it that when she looks in the mirror the image looking back doesn’t reflect her busy life? Does taking precious time out of your busy day feel, at best, self-indulgent and, at worst, impossible? At Renu, we like to think we understand what it is like to be a busy woman in the modern world and we understand the challenges that you face. Whilst taking time out of your day to go to a gym or class, socialising with like-minded women and increasing your fitness and body shape can sound very appealing, fitting it in to your busy schedule can sometimes seem impossible!

achieve overall weight-loss, inch-loss, increased muscle tone and energy levels, alongside improved quality of sleep. It also boosts your metabolism (so maybe you can afford that glass of wine), and increases endorphin levels, leaving you feeling great after your workout. Hormonal changes in the body, lifestyle and challenges of daily life can all affect how you look and feel. However, with the right exercise and dietary advice, you can change the shape of your body, thirty minutes at a time. Your first six weeks are crucial to your success, so diarise your workout times and stick to them. Of course, it’s the Easter holidays coming up, and then summer holidays; in fact, there is probably a whole list of reasons why it is not the perfect time to start. But, if you waited for perfect conditions, you would never get anything done! If you would like more details on how we can help you feel much better about the way you look, then please contact us on 01778 423923 and book in for a free session.

A regular thirty minute workout means that you can, quite literally, fit it in whilst the children are at Brownies or football training, just before you pick them up from school, or whilst dinner is cooking! We know that you can “multi-skill”, so we have developed a workout that works two muscles at a time so you can get results in record time. This increases your muscle tone, sheds inches and increases your metabolic rate by up to 15%, meaning that you burn more calories, even while you sleep! In fact, the average inch loss in the first six weeks on our programme is eight inches. We appreciate that it can sometimes be difficult to juggle everything, so we aim to make your workout headachefree! Gentle aerobic and muscle toning exercises can use every major muscle group in the body to help you

Market Deeping’s Slimming World Couple of the Year This time last year, Jackie and Tony were planning for their special holiday, but were concerned that both of them would certainly benefit from losing a bit of weight. Their solution involved Slimming World, so in June, they made the move and signed up. By adopting a determined approach and taking the valuable advice offered by Market Deeping Consultant, Cheryl Hall, both Jackie and Tony started to shed their unwanted pounds. By Christmas, both had reached their target weights; Jackie had lost 1 stone 8 pounds, whilst Tony stood on the scales, two and a half stones lighter than before!

Even during the Christmas festivities they kept to their target weight. Now, when the pair come to Slimming World every week, they are an inspiration to the rest of the group. They are happy sharing food ideas, and Tony can still enjoy his favourite meal of bacon eggs and beans. What’s more, he has still managed to lose so much weight even with his love for Jackie’s amazing puddings!

Why are Thai Massages so Good for You? Baan Therapy have the Answers No one wants to pay an arm and a leg for a massage and then leave, feeling exactly the same as they did when they arrived - stressed, tight or stiff. Thai massages make you feel amazing after every session, and the positive effects on your oncetight muscles and stiff joints will last for days. Thai massage was developed by Buddhist monks centuries ago. It has been well-developed and its benefits well studied. While you might not completely believe in the energy lines that Thai therapists believe circulate throughout the body, you will certainly benefit from the years of experience that have gone into their techniques.

FAST, FRIENDLY and PROFESSIONAL

Thai masseuses are trained to use both soft and hard pressure and will guide you through various poses, working the ten different energy lines to treat different organs on these “energy meridians”. Because of this, Thai massages help to balance your energy (qi), which in turn can promote healing. Unlike a Swedish massage where you lie in one position, Thai massage forces fresh circulation to specific areas of your body, helping with lymphatic drainage and the return of blood to the heart, and with digestion. Thai massages are relaxing, as they return your body to a Zen-like state. At the end of my session, you will leave, feeling extremely calm and relaxed … and ready to conquer the world!

Your Finances

Time for a Change? - by Richard Ash, Director - Liberty Partnership Ltd

F

rom Norwich to Peterborough, and up and down the land, the shape of the high street is changing. Banks and Building Societies are withdrawing their face-to-face presence in droves in favour of a more technology based service.

Our experience is that, whilst some clients are happy with internet and telephone services, many clients are not and are uncomfortable with receiving advice and help without meeting with someone face-to-face. Liberty Partnership is a Chartered Financial Advice service which is long established in our community. We deliver highly qualified financial advice and can consider all aspects of your financial planning. We are driven by traditional values based on outstanding client service, where you will always be sure of a warm and friendly welcome in our office. We will get to know you and your circumstances and will aim to build a relationship with you and, if needs be, your family over the long term. We recognise that change can be daunting and will aim to put your mind at ease from the moment you enter the building.

And…….. most importantly we are not going anywhere! So perhaps now is the time for you to make a change. We are confident that, should you meet with us, you will be very happy to have done so. The following client testimonials are a selection from our website which may help you, should you be looking to make a change... “I can honestly say that in all my dealings with Liberty Partnership you have exceeded my expectations.” “The team are great for all my financial needs, I wish I had found you sooner!” “Fair, friendly advice; always.” Should you wish to arrange a FREE initial discussion with one of our team, then please call our office on 01778 342291. www.liberty-partnership.co.uk

Google Photo - Edit, Share and Protect Your Images by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC

T

hose of you that used Google Picasa may have already seen the new cloud based replacement Google Photo, but may have ignored it. I recently started to use this service and I have been very impressed. Not only can you use Google Photo to catalogue and view your photos on your PC, but there is also an app for your Android or Apple iOS device. You can edit, store, backup and share images as you wish. The way it works is to set up a cloud based (internet) storage area where all your photos from your PC, phone, tablet and associated apps are stored. This area is synchronised with your devices so you can view your photo collection from any device and anywhere where you have Internet access.

An extra benefit of using Google Photo is that the storing of high definition images up to 16Megapixel is free of charge. This definition should be fine for almost everyone, other than the very keen photographer, so your online storage won’t cost you a penny. To install Google Photo on a PC go to https://photos. google.com/apps . Here you can also find Android and iOS versions, but I would recommend loading these from your device app store. Once installed, you can start enjoying the benefits. Note that during the install process you will need to provide your Google login and password, or if you haven’t yet got one, create a new Google login. On completion of the install, Google Photo will start to copy your photos from your Photo folders to store online. If the images are too large, it will automatically resize them for you. Be patient, as if you have a lot of photos it will take many hours to upload. Note too that there is a ‘count’ bug that often reports that it is copying more images than it actually is. Ignore this – it will sort itself out. Eventually all of your images will be copied over and available to view on any of your devices running Google Photo. You can then sort them in to albums if you so wish. Google photo will also make use of the data that accompanies your images. If your device possesses a GPS, as most smartphones and some cameras do, then it will also suggest albums based on the location data. Another interesting feature is the Assistant which automatically creates photos, videos, enhanced versions and slideshows of your images based on date, content and location. Even if you don’t make use of the various tools, Google Photo offers an excellent way of backing up those treasured images.

R & Co. Hair Boutique: Turning Heads in Market Deeping If Rhianna Painter shows as much talent with her hair styling as she shows bubbly enthusiasm and imagination in her hopes for the future, then the customers who are already flocking to her salon are in for something really special. February 4th marked the opening of Rhianna’s beautifully re-furbished salon in the centre of Market Deeping, and this twenty-five year old is already talking of needing more staff*! Rhianna speaks fondly of the nine years of valuable experience gained, whilst working alongside her mum, Cheryl Wright, in her Deeping hairdressing salon. Cheryl, meanwhile, will be more than useful when she continues offering Rhianna’s customers the benefit of her own thirty years in the profession. Cheryl will be working on Wednesdays, Fridays and alternate Saturdays, and looks forward to seeing all her old (and new) clients at the salon. What Rhianna is able to identify amongst all her enthusiasm is exactly what her customers will require when they visit. Firstly, an intimate boutique where they can relax and enjoy being pampered by Rhianna, whose reputation as a skilled stylist is already well-established in the area. The décor in the salon exudes class, with silver and white much in evidence. Secondly, customer service includes a complementary range of different teas and coffees, alongside the wine, (which I am assured, makes the cutting and colouring experience even more enjoyable!) Phone-charging points at every station in the salon, along with free WiFi ensure that you can keep in touch and be contacted at all times.

The third essential is that top quality products are used, benefiting the hair, rather than risking any damage during the colouring process. Rhianna’s “Montibello” brand, (which includes Oalia, the type of ammonia-free colouring which she stocks) is up there with the best. By insisting on products that are PPD-free, parabenfree and ammonia-free, then Rhianna is able to reassure her customers that not only is she environmentally-friendly, but also she is protecting their locks from chemical attack! Finally, customers often seek something that bit special, so Rhianna is offering a bespoke bridal package, which involves her travelling to the bride-to-be at her chosen location and, there, she can apply the magic. For customers with time constraints, Rhianna can offer out-of-hours appointments, and, finally, she clearly sees how a loyalty scheme of a £5 reward for eight appointments can reward her customers. R & Co. know just what the lady** wants … and are happy to provide it! (* - R & Co are looking to take on a stylist on a self-employed basis. Interested? Then contact Rhianna at the salon) (** R & Co also welcome gentlemen and children!)

‘Greenery’ for the Home -

Interior Designer, Yasmin Chopin

Whether it’s fashion, housewares, interior decoration or even cars… look out for this particular colour - it’s designated by international colour experts “Pantone” as “the colour for 2017”. Called ‘Greenery’, it’s a fresh, zingy, and sunny green; perfect to add a touch optimism to your home! Amongst the two-hundred colours I use in my colour consultations, I predict this fresh green will be picked out more often by clients than it has been in the past. Whether we like it or not, we're influenced by what we see in the shops, and though many would say they’re not slaves to fashion, there will be an upsurge in the use of this hue. Working with colour every day, it’s straightforward for me to pull together combinations that I know will work, so here’s a tip… You can use almost any tint or shade of green in any part of the house - you would be hard-pushed to go wrong. Pick a tone you love of course! Colour has an effect on our emotions, and green has always been considered easy on the eye, as it’s a predominant colour in nature. If it’s not this particular green, I’m pretty sure there’ll be one you like.

WIRE SCULPTURE LADY BY ARTIST DI SPALDING.

If you’re buying plants or flowers for Mother’s Day, you’ll be enjoying the positive energy that comes with choosing flowers and giving them as a gift. Whether you are growing herbs on the windowsill, developing a pot plant collection, or putting in some early bedding plants, this particular green will make a good addition to the home or garden. Indoors, the botanical trend, which started a few years ago, is still strong. And if you’ve been influenced by the metallic trend, you’ll be able to mix ‘Greenery’ with either copper, brass, silver, pewter or gold and it will look fabulous.

Described as a symbolic colour by "Pantone", the "Colour of the Year" is a snapshot of what they see taking place in our global culture; it's representative of our mood right now. “Greens help our heartbeat to slow down, help us to breathe and pull ourselves away from a world tied to flat screens, and immerse ourselves in the physical beauty of the natural world.” Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Colour Institute. Don’t Be Like Dave

by Nick Ash, Managing Director

D

ave didn’t plan to die, and he didn’t expect to go so soon. But he did … and he left a mess behind him.

Like many of us, Dave went through life acting as if he were immortal. Ill health and death happened to other people. He was too busy running his business to get sick. And what a business - fast-growing, profitable and able to offer great job opportunities to his evergrowing team. Dave liked to be in control; he was the only director and he owned the shares – it was truly his business. He was building something to make his family proud, working every hour to give them a great life. His proudest day was the day that Jon came to work with him.

Call us today on 01778 382723 and make a start

Then came the stroke – so work took a back seat. There was no warning, the doctor said it was caused by overworking. The fact that he was the only signatory on the bank account meant nothing could be paid. He was the only one who could sign contracts, so the big opportunity went to his competitor. Suppliers stopped supplying, the staff didn’t get paid. Eventually, his creditors lost patience and petitioned for bankruptcy. His son Jon did everything that he could, but without access to the bank, he had to rely on the few people who could pay him in cash. As the firm was liquidated, the staff left, one or two found another job, but the four that were left lost their jobs and added their names to the list of creditors. Dave didn’t plan to get sick, and he didn’t plan to die. He struggled through his last few months and saw his business suffer too. Maybe the extra stress was the thing that killed him. It Could Have Been So Different … Don’t Be Like Dave... Plan To Die with Will & Probate Services.

Tough new laws now in force for mobile use behind the wheel AS tempting as it may be to send that quick text or make that short call on your mobile – it is now worth remembering more than ever, that as well as being dangerous - using your phone whilst driving could cost you dearly. Tough new laws brought in from March 1st 2017 by police forces around the country will see those caught using their phone at the wheel facing a £200 fine and six points on their licence. If they are caught a second time, they would face a minimum six-month driving ban and would also be summoned to appear in court where they could be fined up to £1,000. We have all seen the disturbing news footage and images in the newspapers in recent weeks and months of what can happen when using a mobile phone whilst driving. These new changes will have a significant impact on young drivers in particular, as they risk having their driving licence revoked following a first offence, and will require them to retake their test. Motorists will no longer be offered the opportunity to go on a driver awareness course. It is illegal to use a mobile phone, held in the hand, whilst driving or while stopped with the engine on. But, while it has been illegal since December 2003, research shows there has been a worrying shift in attitudes to mobile phone use behind the wheel. The RAC recently surveyed 1,714 motorists and 31% said they used a hand-held phone behind the wheel compared with just 8% in 2014. The number of drivers who said they sent a message or posted on social media rose from 7% to 19%, while 14% said they had taken a photograph or video whilst driving. While to some it may seem acceptable to punch in those digits whilst driving, it has been proven that just for a couple of seconds of distraction, the consequences can be devastating.

Pets and Vets

In Memory of a Friend by Lionel Smith

S

everal months ago, I lost a dear friend. I had known her for nearly twenty-six years and first saw her when she was six weeks old. In this time I had visited her most days. Tilly was a half-Irish Draught, halfthoroughbred horse. I first saw Tilly while on a day out with a young lady who later became my wife, Anne. Not knowing Anne as well as I do now, I saw no problem when she suggested we visit a stud farm in Cheshire on our way back. It was here that we saw a little six week old foal, the colour of a conker, hiding behind her mother, but at the same time very inquisitive about who we were. We bought her, there and then, and spent many months visiting her until she was weaned.

longer than I’d known most people. Animals hold a special place in our hearts. When I lost Tilly, I lost a part of my life and a part of me. This may not be like losing a mother or father or a child, but is none the less a time of mourning. When a horse is put to sleep, there is something much more physical about it, as compared to dogs and cats. When 700 kg of horse sinks to the ground after the euthanasia injection, and she gradually breathes her last, it just has more physical impact. After she was gone, l had to organise her cremation. There is no easy way to move a horse of this size. Tilly’s ashes are with me at home and I have wonderful memories of her.

My wife and I spent hours with her while she was trained. I was the first person to get on her back. She was always gentle and always looked after me while riding. She taught me a huge amount about horses. I visited her several times nearly every day, went on holidays to the New Forest, Ludlow and had numerous day trips to the beach and other places. She was a joy to be with. In her later years, both Tilly and I retired from the riding. She developed PPID (Cushing’s disease) and needed daily medication. She was prone to feet abscesses and had occasional spasmodic colic. All of these we treated, and she stayed healthy until she developed a severe colic that proved untreatable, and so she had to be put to sleep. Some people do not understand the intense loss you feel when you lose an animal like this. Tilly was my friend who I had known

History

Discovering . . . The Old Rectory - Rex Needle

S

ome years ago, a past rector of the parish church gave me a tour of the old rectory at Market Deeping when it was still the home of the incumbent and explained rather ruefully that although his parishioners considered him lucky to be living in such grand style, the house had a reputation as the coldest in Lincolnshire while his wife who accompanied us nodded furiously in agreement, thinking no doubt of their soaring energy bills. That winter outing was certainly a chilly one despite the warm interest in one of our most ancient buildings dating from the early 14th century and reputed to be the oldest inhabited parsonage in England. The rectory, built of stone quarried from nearby Clipsham in Rutland, can still be found tucked away behind St Guthlac’s Church in Church Street although now much changed and altered. Tradition has it that the house was originally built as the refectory or dormitory of a monastic cell for Thorney, Crowland or Sempringham, although there is no documentary proof for this but it was converted into a rectory after the Dissolution of the Monasteries with alterations during the mid-18th century. Past ministers have reputedly been driven from the house on two occasions, once by vagrants during the 16th century when he was forced to live in the church tower and again during the English Civil War a century later.

46

There were further extensions to the building in 1832 finished in the Gothic style by Thomas Pilkington, the ecclesiastical architect based at nearby Bourne, who was instructed by the then rector, the Rev William Hildyard, who ministered to this parish from 1828 until his death in 1875 and whose coat of arms was added to the tall gable in the garden frontage. The rectory building has been Grade I listed since 1952 and contains a wealth of fascinating period features including a mediaeval entrance door with an unusual hinge, the original timber roof structure with oak gargoyles at the base of the trusses, all fine examples of ancient wood carving dating from the 14th century. There is also a sweeping Jacobean staircase with moulded balustrades from 1761 in the main hall, ingeniously contrived to serve three levels, and an open fireplace with a carved inset and an inscription which reads: “Pees to this hows. Other partial reconstructions and alterations have been carried out over the years although the building no longer serves its original purpose but has been tastefully modernised and divided into two private residences. Archive photograph of the rectory from circa 1940.

Exciting, Enriching and Outstanding Our Treetops Caterpillar Nursery is a beautiful converted Victorian house, located in Deeping St James. We are very proud of our “home from home” feel and the tranquil, calm and educational environment we provide. We utilise our wonderful, spacious outdoor area, providing exciting and enriching opportunities for the children in our care. We have adopted aspects of the Forest School approach, using our woodland area at the bottom of our garden for natural and imaginative adventures.

With the original and traditional wooden beams and Victorian features, we have created three amazing childcentred areas, each appropriate for children of different ages and stages. Our company promotes a ‘Play, Create and Educate’ ethos, which we use to ensure that the highest standard of care and education is offered in all of our Treetops settings.

highly motivated and enthusiastic. Children are deeply engaged in high quality activities that stimulate their curiosity and imagination’.

We have our Bear Cubs and Little Monkeys in our 0-2s unit, where our main aim and focus is to provide outstanding care and learning opportunities. Our staff plan specifically designed activities and provide resources to support the needs of the children. This makes up the ‘Play’ part of our company’s ethos, being a critical medium for enhancement of a child’s development and learning. Next, we have our Happy Hippos room for our children aged 2-3 years. This is the ‘Create’ part of our ethos, and whilst we encourage creativity in all ages, it really begins to take shape at this stage. Then with ‘Play’ and ‘Create’ firmly under their nursery belts, the children progress onto their final learning stage at Treetops, ‘Educate’. This is our Clever Crocs room, where we have a huge focus on preparing our children for the transition into “big school”.

The Ofsted Inspector also highlighted that ‘Children’s needs, development and safety are central to every aspect of nursery life. Leaders are passionate and committed to ensure suitable and well-trained staff provide fun and stimulating experiences’.

We are very proud to have received an OUTSTANDING grade from Ofsted, whose Inspector commented: ‘The quality of teaching is consistently outstanding. Staff are

We were also recognised for our high regard for the safety and welfare of our children, commenting, ‘Children’s safety and security are highly prioritised’

FUTURE EVENTS: We are currently working to put together monthly baby sensory sessions which will be held for all external and internal parents to attend. March 24th – Mother’s Day tea party – everyone welcome to join us for cake decorating and afternoon tea from 2.30pm. April 14th – Easter Egg Hunt – come and help us find the hidden chocolate eggs around our garden from 3pm. Weekly football sessions held by Richard from Tiny Tykes, these are for our registered children to attend, which helps to develop their social, physical and emotional skills. We are very proud of our setting and welcome you all to join us for any open day or workshop. We love being part of such a wonderful community so, if you ever see our children out for a walk with Roarie our mascot Lion, please give us a wave or pop by and see us some time.

Police Patrol

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings “Bilking” - (What’s that all about then?) by Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

C

ontinuing with my discussion on offences under the Theft Act 1978, the next offence I want to consider is that of making off without payment, otherwise known as ‘bilking’. This is a fairly common offence, with the vast majority of offences occurring at petrol stations. Section 3 of the Theft Act 1978 states: 3(1) a person who, knowing that payment on the spot for any goods supplied or service done is required or expected from him, dishonestly, makes off without having paid as required or expected and with intent to avoid payment of the amount due shall be guilty of an offence. The term ‘goods supplied or services done’ in relation to the offence is not defined in the Act, but it includes filling up your vehicle with fuel and driving off, not paying for a meal in a restaurant, or not paying a taxi fare. Making off involves dishonestly leaving the place, or spot, where payment is required. As can be seen in the examples above, once you have filled up your vehicle, eaten your meal or arrived at your destination, payment is quite rightly expected. The final element of this offence is the intent of the suspect in not paying for the services or goods supplied.

Therefore, if it is a genuine mistake there is no offence. However, in this case the mistake will need to be recognised by the person who has not paid and who must then make arrangements to pay before the police visit. The offence carries a maximum sentence, on indictment (Crown Court) of two years’ imprisonment. Bilkings at petrol stations have proven to be quite a challenge for the police. Where else can you obtain goods away from the point of payment, and be expected to go into a building to pay for those goods? I have discussed this offence recently on Twitter which started a bit of a debate. There is the technology available to prevent this offence; however, it is also recognised that petrol stations rely heavily on customers coming into the shop to buy other goods, whilst paying for their fuel.

To report a crime, call 101 or 999 if in progress. Crimestoppers 0800 555 111

Motoring

Introducing - Mark Jolley Driving School

H

ello readers. I’m Mark Jolley and I have lived in Market Deeping for the past five years with my wife and children. Professionally, I was employed in retail management for over twenty years, yet I have always had a passion for driving and teaching others new skills. It was with this in mind, therefore, that I decided to train to become a qualified DVSA driving instructor, which I successfully completed last year. I work for a franchise of “Just Driver Training”, with my own brand being Mark Jolley Driving School. I believe that developing our driving skills is essential to all drivers to ensure a competent, safe and pleasurable driving experience throughout our motoring lives. I am here to offer my professional services in a calm and constructive manner to all abilities.

With the tail-end of the winter season still upon us, we all need to be cautious of the adverse weather which may affect the road and driving conditions, such as ice, rain and fog. We all need to ensure that we allow additional time for our journeys and forward plan as much as possible to assist in a safe drive to our destinations. Take extra care during the mornings and early evenings whilst it is still dark when visibility is reduced, and take that extra few minutes to ensure that your vehicles are of a roadworthy condition and regularly maintained. If you think you would benefit from any refresher lessons to enhance your current driving skills, or you are seeking to begin lessons as a new driver, I can create a plan tailored to your individual needs. Please don’t hesitate to contact me and I would be more than happy to discuss and accommodate your requirements with very competitive rates and offers available. Meanwhile, please enjoy yourselves with friends and family over the coming month and be safe on the roads in and around the Deepings and beyond. Take care.
