Introduction
Welcome to Your July Issue. Inside
Is it really two years since the following announcement was made:
Deeping Highlights
4................ Health - Protecting your eyes
The “Discovering Magazines” family is proud to announce the safe and welcome arrival, this month, of “Discovering Deeping”, a sister for Bourne, Whittlesey and March. Mother and baby are well, (although exhausted and in need of sleep!) ? Yes, really, and it’s wonderful to hear such positive feedback from contributors and businesses in the Deepings, along with many householders who long for the day when their “favourite freebie” lands on their doormat. A huge thank you to everyone who has been involved from Day One, and here’s to the future health and happiness of you all!

High summer is upon us and the school holidays are in sight. Please make the most of what our local communities are offering, by checking out our “What’s on section”, and let’s hope this warm weather stays with us just a bit longer! Those tickets for Tolethorpe in our competition will make for a fabulous evening for the lucky winner, and it would still be brilliant, even if the evening sun failed to shine, and we had our customary wind and rain!

Finally, my attention was caught by an announcement in a local Building Society recently. On what was a particularly hot afternoon, with the staff coping magnificently with their computer system down, the hand-written exhortation for me to “bare with them, until it was fixed” almost got me removing a few garments!

Protecting your Eyes this Summer Most people know the sun’s rays are bad for our skin. But did you know they’re just as bad for our eyes? It is important to protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays.
Philip Edwards BSc (Hons), MBCO, owner and optometrist at Philip Edwards Opticians
Some of the sun’s effects on the eyes include: • Skin cancer: the skin around your eyes, including your eyelids is very sensitive to sunlight, and nearly 10% of skin cancers are found near the eyes. • Cataracts: a clouding of the eye’s lens that can blur vision. An estimated 20% of cases are caused by extended UV exposure. • Macular degeneration: resulting from damage to the retina that destroys central vision. • Pterygium: a tissue growth on the white part of the surface of the eye. The above diseases and health problems can be prevented by wearing sunglasses with UV protection.
4
D I S C O V E R I N G
What sunglasses should I buy? When buying sunglasses, look for ones that provide 99-100% UV absorption of both UVA and UVB rays, or say UV 400 on the label. They should also have the CE or kitemark logo, to show that they have been approved for sale in the EU. You may also want to consider specialised lenses for your glasses. Transitions® lenses adapt from being clear while indoors and fully dark in brightest sun, thus eliminating the need for separate glasses and sunglasses. If you need sunglasses for driving or participating in snow or water sports and other outdoor activities, then
Deeping
Xperio® Polarised lenses would be a good option for you. They eliminate glare, enhance colour and contrast, whilst protecting the eyes from damaging UV rays. When should I wear sunglasses? You should wear sunglasses whenever you’re in strong sunshine for longer than ten minutes. From mid-April until the end of September, the levels of UV rays are three times higher at midday than they are during the winter, and the levels of UVB during the summer can be as much as ten times higher. For more information on UV protection, or to book your eye test, simply call our friendly and experienced team at Philip Edwards Opticians on 01778 346147.

Would you Like to De-bloat this Summer? by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness
G
aining a flat stomach seems to be one of the most difficult things to achieve. A bloated stomach can be a problem for even the slimmest of people, but what is the answer? It’s true that the right type of exercise is essential for weight control, body tone and delaying the signs of ageing, and it will certainly help in reducing belly fat; but the foods that we eat, the way in which we eat them, and the ability of our body to digest these foods, will also be factors in stomach bloating. Did you know that if you took out your intestines and opened them out, they would create a surface area that
would fill a tennis court? This whole area is covered in cells and receptors that send signals into your blood stream and around your body. Toxins, food sensitivities, allergies or lack of the right nutrients, will all be picked up by these cells in the stomach and, whilst your body may still function, it will send you a signal that it is not happy. Signals include bloating, gas, distension and constipation, to name but a few! The truth is that flat stomachs are made in the kitchen, and whilst exercise will make a real difference to your digestion and body shape, you simply cannot out-train a bad diet! Here are a few things you can do to improve your digestion. ● Sit down and spend time to enjoy your meals. Put your fork down between mouthfuls and chew your food until it is soft. Remember, it’s rude to talk with your mouth full, and stay away from all screens and mobile devices whilst you enjoy your meal. (It seems that Granny really did know best!) ● Keep sugars, caffeine and alcohol to a minimum. ● Drink plenty of water. ● Eat fresh green fibrous vegetables. ● Take a daily walk and keep your stress levels to a minimum. This month, we are offering a “Ten Day De-bloat” programme free, as part of our Summer Beaut Camp. This includes a ten-day meal plan with recipes and advice. If you would like to know more about how you can Beat the Bloat this summer, please speak to one of our instructors at Renu.

Hypnotherapy for Insomnia and Sleep Disorders by Dr Jacqueline Preston
S
leep allows our brain to process the information collected throughout the day. It plays a vital role in both our physical and mental health because sleep gives our body the opportunity to heal and repair itself. Unfortunately though, insomnia is surprisingly common, affecting men and women of all ages, and is often ignored or just passed off as an ‘age thing’!
There are two main categories of insomnia – temporary and persistent.
the process of breaking the associated negative thought patterns, which have allowed the problem to persist, can start.
Temporary Insomnia usually lasts between one night and three to four weeks. Also within this category is ‘Intermittent Insomnia’, (where sleeping problems are experienced periodically over months or years), and ‘Acute Insomnia’, (where a brief episode of difficulty sleeping is brought on by a stressful life event, for example).
For some people, physical or mental tension, the stresses and strains of everyday life, or accumulative stress can make sleeping difficult. As hypnotherapy combines the use of very deep relaxation techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation to help reduce tension, you will be encouraged to develop a new sleep routine and learn new positive behavioural patterns. This will improve your sleep hygiene and reduce overall evening and night-time stress.
Persistent Insomnia (a.k.a. Chronic Insomnia) is where the problem persists almost nightly for at least four weeks or more. When suffering from insomnia for a long period of time (which is not caused by the side effects of prescribed medication, or an underlying medical condition), the patterns of sleep disturbances can become embedded in our subconscious. As a hypnotherapist, through specifically focused suggestions made to a client whilst under hypnosis, it is possible to effectively communicate with your subconscious mind and establish the root cause behind the sleeplessness. Once the cause is understood,
The number of hypnotherapy sessions required to help you overcome insomnia varies from person to person, and greatly depends on your individual circumstances. Some people only need one session, while others may require deeper work over several sessions. Deciding to try hypnotherapy in the first place is not the easiest decision for most. Therefore, to help with this, I always speak to any prospective client over the telephone first to discuss their personal situation. This provides them with the opportunity to ask me any questions and also determines whether hypnotherapy is the most suitable choice, and the best way forward to a positive outcome. If you would like to know more, or discuss a particular concern of yours with Dr Jacqueline Preston in the strictest confidence, then please contact the Wellhead Practice. Please note: If you suspect you may be suffering from insomnia, please consult your GP in the first instance so any medical or health condition that may be causing your sleeplessness may be ruled out.

New fundraising focus for Empire Gym - by Steve Weston
R
ecently my son Matt and I were invited to tour Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough by Community Fundraiser, Joely Garner. It proved to be one of the most uplifting experiences of my life. Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice exists to care for people with conditions like cancer, heart failure or lung disease, also their family and friends. They give the care and support needed to help ease physical and emotional pain at what can be a very frightening time. The specialist hospice care teams include; doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, physiotherapists, occupational and complementary therapists, bereavement support workers and befrienders. They work seamlessly together to support every person in spending the time they have left in the way they choose.
In Support Of
They are supported by volunteers who, amongst many other things, maintain the gardens to the most magnificent standards, in order that patients can enjoy the benefits of a beautiful open space immediately outside rooms, which are equipped with doors to offer easy direct access. You would think that such a place would engender a feeling of sadness and despair. In fact, the overriding atmosphere is positive, inspirational and full of hope, all created by the drive, dedication, professionalism and determination of a team who clearly work tirelessly to see the person, not the condition, and to take the time to understand and deliver the small things that help the person live the fullest life possible. The team at Thorpe Hall tell us, “We can’t change the outcome, but we can change the journey.” It all adds up to incredible care. In recognition of the ongoing challenges faced by the staff and volunteers, going forward, Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice will become the keystone of our fundraising and charitable work at Empire Gym. We look forward to working with you, our members and friends in the local community, to help us raise funds for this worthy and brilliant cause. It costs £8,000 every day to keep this facility operational; it is vital that we as a community pull together to provide the means. Please follow us on Facebook to keep in touch with future fundraising events.

Deepings Rotary Fun Run and 10k Road Race A beautiful sunny day with light winds attracted a record entry of over four hundred for the thirty-first running of the Annual Charity Fun Run and Road Race, organised by the Rotary Club of the Deepings, on Sunday May 21st. One hundred and fifty runners of all ages tackled the three kilometre course, while over two hundred and fifty took on the more serious challenge of the accurately measured and AAA licensed, ten kilometre event.
following similar events at Eye and Langtoft, in the two previous weeks. All of these races are particularly popular with both local runners and ones from further afield, because they all have fast level courses, giving serious runners the chance to put up personal best times, which several competitors did on Sunday.
Both the men’s winner Phil Martin of Peterborough and the ladies winner, Claire Steels of Bourne, came within two minutes of breaking the course record.
The Deepings is the third of the local spring treble of ten kilometre races,
Race organiser, Joe Piercy, said that the Rotary Club was particularly
grateful to Piper Physiotherapy of Market Deeping and the Spinroom Studio of Deeping St James for sponsoring the races; to the Deepings Leisure Centre for making their excellent changing facilities available to the runners and to the Deepings Inner Wheel ladies and the Rugby Club, for providing refreshments and glasses of something long and cool for both runners and spectators. “The Rotary Club always enjoys organising events which are as popular as this,” he said, “especially when they also help us to raise money for Rotary charities.”

The Deeping Shopping Centre is looking for a new local charity to partner with. For the next six months, the Centre will arrange events and help raise funds for the chosen charity.

Dave King, Centre Manager, commented: “I’ve only been at the Horsefair for a few months but I’ve already found out just how generous our shoppers are. In the past, the centre and its shoppers have raised substantial amounts of money for charity. I would now like to choose one cause who we will work with for six months to help raise their profile, whilst raising vital funds.” The partnership will begin on August 1st, to allow the charity to benefit from the Deeping Centre’s busiest periods, Hallowe’en and Christmas. The selection process could not be easier. Simply name the charity and explain why it should be picked, in no more than 500 words, and either drop it in the Centre Manager’s office or e-mail it to dave.king@ deepingshoppingcentre.co.uk. Method 1 Pat the duck breasts dry with paper towels. Using a sharp knife, score skin in a 1/2-inch diamond pattern (do not cut into flesh). 2
Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large, heavy-bottomed, frying pan over a medium high heat. Season the duck and place in the pan, skin side down. Cook until skin is browned and crisp, about 6 minutes. Turn duck breasts over, reduce heat to medium, and cook for 4 minutes. If the duck is not fully cooked at this point, finish the cooking in an oven, pre-heated to 220ยบC/gas mark 7. Transfer to a plate and leave to rest for 10 minutes.
3 Pour off all but 2 tablespoons of fat from the pan. Add the shallot to the pan and stir
over medium heat for 30 seconds. Add stock, cherries, port and honey. Increase heat to high and boil until sauce is reduced to a glaze, stirring often for about 3 minutes. Whisk in 1 tablespoon of butter. Season sauce to taste with salt and pepper.

Gardening
The Potting Shed All of that hard work earlier on in the year should be paying off now, as you should be reaping the fruits of your labour almost on a daily basis. July is generally a warm, dry month and you will need to make sure that you keep the crops watered frequently, as sporadic watering can cause a number of problems: flowers may fall, skins split, fruits may not form and plants may bolt. The best times to water are at the beginning or end of the day to minimise evaporation and make sure that you give the plants a good soaking to penetrate right down to the roots. Putting mulch around the plants can help conserve the moisture, slowing down evaporation rates and help keep the weeds at bay: as does regular hoeing. Another problem at this time of the year is pests:
● Spray tomatoes and potatoes against blight and dig up any rogue potato plants from last year, as they may be harbouring disease.
SALES | REPAIRS | SERVICE | PARTS | HIRE
om
owro visit our sh Come and lay p is d on for models
● Space may be created by lifting onions, garlic and early potatoes; you can use this space to plant out Brussels sprouts, cabbages and cauliflower that you have grown from seed. ● Transplant leeks into their final growing position. A few jobs for this month include; ● Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes.
● Feed tomatoes and peppers.
● Check for blackfly on broad beans, runner beans, beetroot, and apply a spray as soon as you see them.
● lettuce, rocket and a variety of salad leaves –succession sow for an ongoing supply in the autumn.
● Florence fennel.
● Cover cauliflower heads with the leaves to prevent them from going yellow.
● Inspect cabbage leaves for eggs or caterpillars and squash them or spray.
Although it is getting late for sowing and planting, there are still a few crops that can be planted:
● Fast growing varieties of peas, beetroot and carrots.
● Lift garlic, onions and shallots: loosen the soil around the roots then choose a dry spell to lift them, lay them on the ground to dry out in the sun: this should help prolong their storage life. ● Early potatoes should be coming out of the ground now and, although they do not store as well as the maincrop varieties, they will store until finished.
Happy harvesting!

Getting Older - It’s no fun, or is it? by Nick Ash, Managing Director
T
he recent General Election brought the crisis in social care into focus, along with the chaotic plans that the parties had to attempt to solve the problem. Local media has highlighted a case where an elderly lady was financially abused by her neighbours who stole £150,000 from her. Dementia is on the increase, and is now amongst the most common factors in deaths in the UK. It seems that it is bad news all round when we look forward to our old age. Or is it? Does everything have to be doom and gloom? The good news is that, on average, a person can look forward to a longer and healthier life, enjoying more time with their friends and family. You will be more active than your parents were, and the current generation of pensioners is the richest ever, when looked at as a group.
Even better, with the right sort of planning, you can protect your assets from the worst ravages of the care system; you can ensure that you won’t become the victim of financial abuse and you can give your loved ones the powers to make decisions as you grow older, even if you can’t make them for yourself. The Alzheimer’s Society are creating millions of Dementia Friends who all know that it is possible to live well with dementia and are helping society to adapt. It seems that medical advances in the treatment of the disease are announced every month. So, getting older is something to be anticipated and embraced, rather than feared. All you need is a plan. Want to know more, or need help with your plan?

Your Finances
Have you Planned for your Retirement Years? - by Richard Ash, Director - Liberty Partnership Ltd
R
etirement planning is a relatively modern concept. If you go back a hundred years, most people expected to work until they died or, at best, be supported by their children. Even fifty years ago, retirement would have meant five to ten years of fairly quiet life before you died.
Today, most people looking to stop working in their early to mid-60s would expect to have ten to fifteen years of active life doing all the things they didn’t have time to do when they were at work. This, of course, requires money which is where the problems can start. Clearly, the state will provide some benefits. Many people have their own plans and some people may be fortunate enough to receive an inheritance or other windfall. It is, however, now widely accepted that many will simply not have enough money to maintain their present standard of living, let alone go on one or two holidays a year. At the start of her reign in 1952, the Queen sent out 255 birthday telegrams to people reaching the age of one hundred. By the end of 2014, that number had increased to 7,517. Figures from the Office for National Statistics at the same time showed 13,780 people were over the age of one hundred in Britain, compared with just 6,860 in 2000. It is now estimated that one in three children born today will reach their century! The main issue here is that we are all living longer and so our finances need to stretch further. It is clear that state pension benefits will be limited and that the government purse is already stretched. So, very careful consideration is required, and you will need to have a plan, which is where we can help. Call the office today for a FREE initial meeting where we can discuss with you a financial strategy to help you achieve your plans and goals for when you reach the point of your own retirement and for the years beyond.

Do I Have to Use the Property Lawyer My Estate Agent is Recommending? By Michelle Rickard, PDR Property Lawyers
This is something I hear on a daily basis, and the quick answer is ‘no’. Landscaping Garden Specialists I strongly recommend that you get at least three When your estateand agent recommends a “For all your gardening needs”

quotes for your conveyancing. Fees for leasehold and freeholds within different valuation brackets can vary widely. Also search for reviews of the firms you are interested in working with.
Solicitors and licensed conveyancers are required to set out a full quotation which details their fees, the disbursement costs and associated expenses with your transaction. They are also required to lorraine_setinstone@hotmail.com reveal how much they paid for your referral, and I suggest you askHome them for on details of the referral fee Visits Request they have paid for your (potential) custom.
Both the SRA and the CLC rigorously state that its members are meant to ensure that their client has chosen them to act without pressure being exerted upon them to do so.
In summary, when buying or selling a property it is www.landscapingandgardenspecialists.com vital that you appoint a lawyer that you can trust Read the small print before you sign any agreements! Pets and Vets
The Other Side of the Table by Lionel Smith
S
everal weeks ago, one of our horses, an Arab called Sunflower, was diagnosed with sarcoids. She had quite a few of varying sizes in her pelvic and upper leg area. Sarcoids are common tumours in horses and are generally benign but can be locally invasive. One of these tumours was quite large and was getting bigger. In consultation with our horse vet, we decided to have these masses removed by laser, which would require a sedation and a trip to the horse hospital.
enormous responsibility that this involves. Every animal I treat is somebody’s special pet that we have to treat to the very best of our ability. We were very anxious during the wait for the surgery (we stayed with her before and after her operation) and while she was being operated on. I have seen this same anxiety on the faces of my clients as the have waited for their pet’s surgery. Now it was my turn.
As is the case with many people, this horse is very special to us. She really communicates and interacts with us and is very open to people. She had a fantastic upbringing at the stud that bred and backed her, which has resulted in a horse that is not at all sceptical about any of life’s experiences.
I’m pleased to be able to report that all went well with her surgery and she is now beginning to heal. She made it clear that this was painful for the first week and so we had to extend her pain relief. Even though the treatment was needed, we still felt upset that we had put her through all of this, which is a sentiment that many people feel after any traumatic surgery.
We now had to hand our beautiful horse over to our vet and entrust her to his care. This reminded me that my clients do the same with me every day and of the
This whole experience has reinforced my understanding of what my clients experience when they entrust their pets to our veterinary practice.

We can all greatly reduce the risk of burglary by taking a few simple security measures to help make our home less attractive to thieves. It is well known that most burglars are opportunists, and target homes and businesses that offer the least risk of being caught. Whether you’re going away for a day or a few weeks, you should take steps to make your home look occupied. A dark home in the evenings and uncollected mail is a sign to burglars that no one is at home. Before you go on holiday: • Cancel milk and newspaper deliveries. • Set up automatic timer switches to turn your lights on when it gets dark.
• Register for the Royal Mail’s ‘keepsake’ service. HIP-631-62748-Bourne-74x105-Spring-from15-ASAP.pdf 1 03/02/2017 12:15 LIKE our facebook page www.airborneaerials.co.uk • Move valuable items out of view of windows.

• Ask a trusted neighbour to watch over your home whilst you’re away. • And there are steps you can take to keep your home safe and secure, even if you are simply spending an evening entertaining alfresco or are using a sunny day to get to grips with the gardening. If you are at home, but are spending time outdoors: • Ensure all windows and doors are closed and locked. • If you are switching between front and back gardens, don’t leave lawn mowers or power tools unattended. • Make sure you lock all gates and sheds when you return indoors. • Keep the door chain on the front door. • Keep all valuables and keys out of sight and out of reach of doors and windows. • Keep items that could be used to break into your property such as ladders, tools and wheelie bins stored safely away. • Use pea shingle on driveways or under windows, as it crunches loudly when stepped on. Kodi - The Controversial and Powerful Media Player
K
odi is a superb media player that allows you to play or stream video, music and pictures. It is extremely customisable and allows the addition of ‘modules’ that provide additional content and services. Why Have I Heard that Kodi is Illegal? Kodi itself is just a piece of software and is 100% legal. It is powerful, well written and one of the best media players available. However, because the Kodi software is so customisable, there have been many illegal add-ons written, to ‘bolt-on’ to it. Some of these add-ons allow the illegal streaming and downloading of copyrighted material (things like the latest movies, TV shows, sport events etc.) Taking this a stage further, those less concerned with the legality of the content, have built small desktop boxes that connect direct to your TV. These boxes have the Kodi software and the illegal bolt-ons pre-installed and allow easy play back of the latest TV, films and music, in contravention of copyright laws. These boxes are known as ‘Kodi boxes’ and it is these that are now banned. It is illegal to sell, buy and use these devices. This is a little unfortunate for Kodi as it mistakenly brands the Kodi software as being part of that illegal activity.
app store or via the website https:// kodi.tv What Can I Do With Kodi? In its simplest form, Kodi is a media player and can identify the difference between video, audio and photo files. It is a powerful and easy to use media centre for playing this type of media, whether watching video, listening to music or watching a slideshow of your holiday snaps. However, when linked to the Internet, Kodi also allows easy ‘streaming’ of video and audio which is what makes it so powerful. For the uninitiated, play-back refers to playing a complete file that you have stored on your device, whereas ‘streaming’ sends a constant stream of data that is played back as it is received. So, using old technology, a broadcasted TV channel, such as BBC 1 is the equivalent of a stream, as you watched it ‘live’ as it was broadcast, whereas a VHS video recorded and stored a copy of the programme on the tape and you watched this via ‘play-back’.
by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC
To watch streaming content on Kodi, you can install add-ons, most completely legal, that let you stream various contents and channels to your device (PC, desktop box, tablet or phone). What Add-Ons are Available? You can choose from an ever-growing list of add-ons. On the Kodi web site there are currently eleven pages of video add-ons listed, all legal to use. The image shown is a good example of the diversity of the ‘channels’ available and shows just the last two rows of the video channel add-ons. If you want to learn more about Kodi, then refer to their website at https:// kodi.tv or do a web search for Kodi TV.
How Do I Get Kodi? The Kodi player is available to download from your phone or tablet IT Support and Training for Home Computer Users and Small Businesses 01778 590632 07894 659479 www.litespc.co.uk info@litespc.co.uk 38

Changing Times in Civil Disputes
A
t the turn of the century, the rules governing civil disputes (civil litigation) were rewritten. Since then, there have been ongoing changes to the rules including procedures required in certain instances, which we call “protocols”. There are various protocols which deal with aspects of disputes such as landlord and tenant, construction, personal injury, defamation and others. The idea was to ensure that the parties provide sufficient information and documentation to each other about a dispute, at the outset. This is often called “Front Loading”, as it enables each party to have a view at the beginning, so as to decide whether they want to try to settle the matter without going too far. It also enables the court to manage the dispute better, and to try to control the various costs, such as those relating to experts. As a result of this, the parties will often be ordered by the court to agree an instruction to a single joint expert in the field of the dispute. Historically, some of these costs got out of control, but even under the new system there can be problems with costs. It is for that reason that the court tries to control costs more readily. In more complicated disputes, it specifically tries to manage the budgets of the parties in relation to costs. There is now a particular emphasis on trying to keep the parties’
costs of a case proportionate to what is in dispute. This means that if a party is arguing about £100,000 in a case, it may be reasonable for them to spend £10,000 on their costs, and then try to seek an order that those costs be reimbursed at the end of the case. However, if there was an argument of say a sum of £15,000 and a party spends £10,000, then they would not realistically be able to recover those costs in their entirety, because that sum would be considered to be out-of-proportion to what was in dispute. Disputes under £10,000 are usually treated as small claims cases in any event, which means that a successful party might only recover nominal fixed costs. All parties in every case are now encouraged to see if they can mediate to try to avoid the costs of a trial at the court. Even a person who succeeds in a contested hearing (a trial), may end up having to pay the loser some costs, if a court believed the person who was successful should have agreed to mediate and refused. Taking into account these changes and, particularly, the principle of ‘proportionality’, it is more essential now than ever before that everyone tries to avoid getting into a situation where they may find themselves in a dispute.

Nature Poet – July Festival in Helpston Born in the village of Helpston, just north of Peterborough in 1864, John Clare had humble, and mostly self-educated, beginnings, but is now seen to have been one of England’s finest poets. His words capture you and take you with him as he walks the fields, woods, heaths and hedgerows of his native countryside, and his use of language can astonish and delight:
“I dreaded walking where there was no path
“I love to hear the evening crows go by
And always turned to look with wary eye
And see the starnels darken down the sky;
And always feared the owner coming by;
The bleaching stack the bustling sparrow leaves
Yet everything about where I had gone
And plops with merry note beneath the eaves;”
Appeared so beautiful I ventured on..”
(From “Birds at Evening”)
(From “Trespass”)
Clare used local words for many of the birds and native plants and animals he described; starnels are starlings. He thought of himself as a simple man, and was deeply wounded by the violent changes to his countryside as the enclosures were enforced all around the landscape.
And pressed with cautious tread the meadow swath
Every year, the John Clare Society holds a literary festival in the village of Helpston, where you can find out about the man, his life and poetry, and this year, it will run from July 14th to the 17th. Clare Cottage is open to the public every week from Thursday to Sunday and it will be hosting a music evening in the festival weekend.

History
Discovering . . . The Adventurers - Rex Needle
T
he Deepings are surrounded by some of the most productive farmland in the world, thousands of acres of rich black soil which each year yield an abundance of valuable crops such as wheat and potatoes. Yet this area was once marsh and bog, a strange land of fetid pools and flowing rivers and a terrain grim enough to daunt all but the most intrepid visitor. The 8th century chronicler, Felix of Crowland, described it thus: “A trackless waste of immense marshes and foul running streams. Because of its low-lying situation and the excessive damp, it was often clouded with moist and dark vapours and widely believed to be the haunt of devils. Crossing the fens could be dangerous and in some areas, church bells were tolled and lamps hung in belfries to guide travellers to the safety of high ground. On occasions, livestock disappeared in bogs and people were lost. Sometimes it was safer to make a lengthy detour rather than risk the shortest and most difficult route. Yet it was this huge expanse, once known as the Great Level, that was to become a centre for agricultural excellence. The draining of the fens, the embanking of rivers and cutting of channels, was begun by the Romans and the work has continued ever since at immense cost in money and human effort, particularly during the 17th and 18th centuries when small groups of gentlemen entrepreneurs known as The Adventurers were granted a concession by the Crown to reclaim the fens and turn them into pasture land for grazing and for hay and this has progressed into the productive farmland we see today. They showed great skill and ingenuity in their efforts, constructing tunnels under the embanked fenland rivers while huge tracts of land were controlled by windmills built to drive paddles to push water from the dykes into the drainage channels in time of heavy rainfall and by 1763, over 50 were at work in Deeping Fen alone while the introduction of steam engines in the early 19th century became a major turning point in the battle to drain the fens.

Maintenance and improvement continues on a regular basis although the waterways are now remotely controlled by turbo-electric installations, making fenland one of the best drained areas of Britain, to ensure that the first class arable land it serves can fulfil its vital role of food production, due mainly to the Adventurers whose enterprise laid the foundations of the system we have today. Schools
Langtoft Primary School: a Rights Respecting School Children, staff and governors of Langtoft Primary School are proudly celebrating the news that they have been recognised by UNICEF UK for taking great strides to becoming a Rights Respecting School. Rights Respecting Schools are those that help their children and the community to learn about children’s rights by putting them into practice every day.
‘The idea of becoming a Rights Respecting School made absolute sense to me,’ begins Headteacher, Mr McCullough, ‘as our school’s aims and values are rooted in mutual care and respect, equality and co-operation. Acknowledging in children such qualities as being conscientious, caring, considerate, co-operative and courteous (known as The 5Cs) is something we do all the time. The Convention of the Rights of the Child brings all of this together.’ In the autumn of 2016, teacher Mrs Wells, submitted to UNICEF UK a plan of action which identified the steps the school would need to take to gain Level 1. ‘It was business as usual,’ explains Mrs Wells, ‘with the election of the School Council, raising money during Red Nose Day, discussing the world’s disasters in Geography lessons – all part of our curriculum. Whilst teaching these lessons, the teachers introduced, one by one, each Article of the Convention of the Rights of the Child. Our children soon realised that their school and home already gave them full access to children’s rights. It was many of the other children around the world who did not have this access.’
Flooding in Pakistan, for instance, helped them to realise that the right to clean water, shelter, privacy and education had been taken from the children in those affected areas. ‘This is what moved our children the most,’ continues Mr McCullough. ‘They could not see why this should happen to children the same age as them, just because of where they were born. Our children, without realising it, were becoming global citizens.’
In May of this year, a UNICEF UK assessor (Martin) visited the school and awarded them Level 1 status. He was ‘amazed’ at the amount of knowledge the children had gained since last autumn. The children were keen to show Michael that the rights of children are universal and unconditional. Mrs Wells and the children are already planning their next actions, to gain Level 2 (the final stage) within the next eighteen months, which would officially make Langtoft Primary School a Rights Respecting School.

In the Hot Seat
IN THE HOT SEAT Judith Allen was recently awarded the title of “Individual to Most Make a Difference in Deeping St. James : 2016/17”, as a result of her amazing drive to help and support others. As well as her long-standing role as Treasurer for the Deeping St James Women’s Institute, Judith and her husband have volunteered their time and services to Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall for twenty-seven years. When she isn’t busy fundraising, Judith can be found working in the Thorpe Hall Coffee Shop, organising events or attending and teaching at craft events. Where were you born and how long have you lived in the Deepings? I was born in Edmonton, North London. I moved to Market Deeping in January 1988 and have lived here ever since.
Judith Allen
What is the best thing about being a member of the Women’s Institute? We have interesting speakers each month and there are a lot of activities and outings we can all take part in. It is a lovely group of ladies who really support me in the work that I do. Whenever I have a charity event for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, they bake cakes for my cake stall, knit and stitch items for my craft stall, sponsor me in walks and much more, and for this I am very grateful. You have raised so much money for Thorpe Hall. How did your association with them come about? A friend at work saw an advert in the paper requesting volunteers to start raising money for the new Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice being established. She joined and then asked me to help her. We organised events at work to help raise money. From this, the ‘Onwards Group’ was born. This was, and still is, a group of volunteers raising money to purchase items for the care of the patients and the Day Centre clients. The largest item we purchased was a van that was adapted to carry patients and a nurse, and this cost £18,000. My husband 50

David and myself are now the only original members and have been volunteers for twenty-seven years, and during this time have organised, along with the help of the group, various events which have now raised over £250,000.
You support craft groups; what is your favourite crafting activity and why? It is difficult to say which is my favourite crafting activity as I love to try out anything, although I must say that there are some I am not so good at, but still like to have a go. I suppose those I do most are patchwork, plus knitting, crochet and embroidery - I was taught these three crafts by my mother and grandmother, but I have a massive amount of all sorts of crafting equipment at home, so much that, along with items for Thorpe Hall, they almost take up the whole house! I belong to the ‘Deep-In Craft’ Deeping Craft Club and we also have a craft club within our W.I. and have demonstrated new crafts to both clubs. Where is your favourite place to visit locally to relax and have fun? I love shopping - what girl doesn’t? I do like visiting stately homes or a day at a large craft fayre - any place where I can get a cream tea or a cappuccino.

The Stamford Shakespeare Company at Tolethorpe Last summer, over 34,000 people experienced the magic of an evening at Tolethorpe Hall. This summer, why not enjoy a picnic in the beautiful grounds as the sun slowly sets, then take your seat, protected from summer showers, and see a stage like no other? The 2017 programme features three wonderful comedies: “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Much Ado About Nothing”, by Shakespeare, and “Hobson’s Choice” by Harold Brighouse.

In a traditional, Elizabethan production of Shakespeare’s most popular comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, four runaway lovers must spend the night in a dark and ominous wood. Meanwhile, in a nearby glade, humble workmen are rehearsing a play. They encounter the parallel universe of fairies, goblins and sprites, where all is not well between the fairy King and Queen.

Shakespeare’s funniest play, Much Ado About Nothing, is full of witty love-duelling, comic villains and crazy chases. Battle-weary heroes return from the First World War with their thoughts turning to romance, but the dastardly Don John and his comical sidekicks plot to scupper any romantic notions. Can the incompetent WPC Dogberry and the riotous ladies of ‘the watch’ foil their plans?
The Rutland Open Air Theatre offers the comforts of an indoor venue with the delights of an outdoor setting. The covered auditorium faces an open-air stage set within an idyllic woodland glade. Motoring
Speed - Use it Wisely!
Advice from Mark Jolley Driving School
T
his month, I would like to highlight an issue very close to my own heart, namely the correct use of appropriate speed on our roads. Many different speed regulations exist, not only in the Deepings, but throughout the country too. These speeds can vary according to the type of motorised vehicle in use and can also differ in circumstances, such as when towing a trailer or caravan.
Once again, please contact me to discuss my options for learner or refresher driving lessons or packages that I am able to offer. I wish you all a great time throughout July and, for you parents, good luck with the six week school holiday which is soon upon us!! Take care and drive safely.
It is, of course, essential that the speed limits must be adhered to at all times, yet many of us are well aware of the lack of attention that some people pay to them. I respectfully request that we all strive to remain within the speed limits, to allow all other road users and pedestrians a safe journey. With increased speed comes an increase in thinking and braking distances, both jointly impacting on the overall stopping distance of any vehicle. Almost every day I witness situations where an overuse of speed leads to either a near miss or a sudden change in direction required by others, to prevent a collision. I appreciate that there are many great drivers on the roads and I ask you to continue to make full use of your skills, maintaining a high level of anticipation and awareness of others around you. On the flip side of the coin, we all need to drive at a speed, appropriate for the conditions and, whilst being mindful of others, try not to be hesitant in our driving, but have the confidence to make progress at a suitable speed. With this in mind, please show consideration for all learner drivers. Remember ‌ we all had to start somewhere, and a little more space given to learners reduces the pressures they experience and allows a much greater platform for development. This is a challenging time for them, made worse when other drivers come too close, flash headlights, sound horns or even overtake and cut back in, which I witness on a regular basis. Not only does this style of driving unsettle the learner, it concerns me with the lack of responsibility it demonstrates towards others, so let’s all try a little harder to drive in a safer way.

examples of suspicious activity and behaviour which could potentially be terrorist-related:
Terrorism takes many forms and uses violence and threats of violence to publicise their causes and as a means to achieve their goals through influencing the government or intimidate the public. They can be well organised groups operating from remote locations to the so called ‘lone wolf’, who may be influenced or motivated by the ideology and beliefs of others.

Neighbourhood policing is an essential tool in countering terrorism. Police officers and PCSOs, working closely with the community, get to know and understand it, building trust which in turn helps to identify tensions or the presence of extremist activity. This valuable information is passed on by neighbours, work colleagues, friends and even family members of those involved. Terrorists live amongst us. By working together with the police, staying alert and thinking about your safety and security at home or work or when you are out and about, you can make it harder for terrorists to plan or carry out an attack. You should report suspicious activity or behaviour – anything that seems out of place, unusual or just doesn’t seem to fit in with everyday life. These are just some

DIRECTorY Business FEATURE OF THE MONTH... K-Clean Domestic Cleaning Services – Let K-Clean Keep it Clean If you happen to think that reliability, close attention to detail and a solid reputation for good time-keeping actually matter when employing a cleaner, then Kath Ransom could be for you! She is almost embarrassed to admit that her own home is a victim of her obsessive cleaning tendencies. So, when Kath decided to leave behind thirty years as an office administrator to seek new challenges, her attention was clearly to focus on what she knows she is particularly good at, and something which she knows she will enjoy doing … and so K-Clean Domestic Cleaning Services was born. This Deeping St. James lady is aware of just how important it is that the person you’re wanting to clean your house is the one who you want it to be. This is no faceless agency, but instead an enthusiastic cleaner with an obsession to clean. So, if you are in the Deepings or neighbouring villages, why not let K-Clean keep it clean?
