How fabulous to have seen local heroes, Deeping Rangers, put up such a brave show in the F.A. Cup recently, bowing out narrowly to Kidderminster Harriers, and the whole match beamed out to a national and of course, international audience, from our computer screens. What next? Back Pain and Children by Philip Hakim

s a new term and, for some, a brand new school, is now with us, here are some thoughts to help minimise the risk of your child getting back pain.

Good school bags Children are often required to carry bags full of books, PE kits, musical instruments and other equipment to and from school. Parents should invest in a good quality back pack that the child should wear across both shoulders, ideally with a strap across the chest to keep the load close to their body, (however ‘un-cool’!) Packing the bag with the heaviest items closest to child’s body will help. Limit screen time Looking down to use smart phones, tablets and laptops for an extended period is a “necessary evil” today, but it can pull the back and neck into unnatural postures resulting in pain. Trying to limit the time spent using mobile devices and encouraging regular breaks and time behind a properly set up desk based computer, may help to avoid problems. For laptops, consider purchasing a support that elevates the screen to a height that allows the child to sit up straight with their eyes at screen level. Working whilst sat across a bed propped up by the wall is a definite non-starter. Regular exercise A sedentary lifestyle is known to contribute to the risk of developing back pain, as well as contributing to obesity. Regular physical activity helps to keep the core muscles that support the spine strong and maintain flexibility, which will help to avoid back pain. Encourage lots of active play, such as walking, running, swimming and cycling to keep your child fit and healthy. The right bed and pillow Good quality sleep is vital for both physical and mental development. Having a good sized comfortable bed with a suitable mattress for their weight is really important. Pillows should support the head without lifting it too high, so the spine stays aligned. One pillow is usually sufficient for sleeping on your back and two if you prefer your side. Osteopathic Treatment for your child’s back pain Your child’s back pain may benefit from osteopathic treatment. Two Easy Steps to Look Amazing this Winter by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness

f you are wanting to look your best for the party season this year, now is the time to make your action plan. Once upon a time, we just counted our calories and made a reduction enough to lose those extra pounds. It’s a tiresome exercise, weighing food and referring to calorie charts daily and in recent years, there has been more emphasis on the types of food we eat, rather than their calorific value.

Step Two: Reduce your calorie intake by 250 kcal daily.

So do calories really count anymore if you want to lose weight?

By doing this, you are creating an energy deficit of 500kcals a day and 3500kcals a week. This equates to losing one to two pounds of weight a week.

The truth is that if you reduce your calorie intake by 3,500 calories per week (or 500 calories per day), you will lose one to two pounds each week. However, controlling the content of those calories will make your weight loss easier to maintain. Keeping sugar and starchy carbohydrates to a minimum and making up your calories from good quality protein, lots of green fruit and vegetables and healthy fats, will squash hunger cravings and promote a better body shape and improve your overall health. Increasing your activity levels will burn calories and therefore mean you have more flexibility for food, and improve your muscle tone and body shape. Therefore, if you follow these two easy steps you will reach your goal. You need to reduce your calorie intake by 250kcals a day and increase the amount of energy you burn by 250kcals a day. Step One: Increase your daily activity to burn 250 kcals a day. (This energy expenditure should be on top of what you normally do now). e.g.250kcals = A 30 minute RENU workout. = A 45 minute brisk walk. = 60 minutes Pilates class. = 60 minutes vacuuming and sweeping the floor.

e.g. 250kcals = Three Bourbon biscuits. = A large glass of wine. = An ounce of cheese and two biscuits. = A Mars bar. = A 50g ‘grab bag’ of crisps.

Even more importantly, by creating an energy deficit of 500kcals a day, you will be burning fat cells. This means you will be more likely to maintain your loss, and you will improve your muscle tone. However, beware of ‘crash diets!’ It is tempting to try to cut out more calories to lose weight quicker, but beware. If you were to cut out more calories a day than advised on the energy deficit, you would be ‘crash dieting’. Crash diets can make your weight drop dramatically; however, the weight lost will go back on just as quickly. This means that if you start now, you could lose twelve to fourteen pounds before the party season starts! The Empire Gym “Three Month Challenge” - Progress report by Steve Weston

ur Empire Gym “three month challengers” have each commenced their programmes, having undergone preliminary testing to establish the values of their five components of fitness. Claire Hadley and Julie Sallis have been training at Empire Gym a minimum of three times a week through September, and have completed regular weekly personal training sessions with our resident personal trainers, Matt and Dave Weston. Sarah Asplin started her programme late in September, due to annual holiday commitments. Each lady has been provided with dietary advice in the form of daily recommended percentages of the three macro nutrients, (protein, carbohydrate and fat), and now understands the calorific value per gram for each macro

nutrient. All challengers now appreciate the difference between simple and complex carbohydrates, the benefits of protein, and the importance of fat in the diet. Furthermore, they understand the energy equation which simply states that, to maintain body weight, daily calories consumed must never exceed daily calories burned. If you are looking to lose weight, then your energy output must exceed your energy input. We each require a daily energy input to simply exist, and the level of energy required varies per person, dependent upon our individual Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). Any additional activity we undertake requires further energy input which can be estimated, based upon lifestyle (level of activity). The two values combined equate to our required daily calorie intake. Providing we do not exceed this energy requirement, and maintain our levels of activity, our bodies will not gain weight. Conversely, of course, if we do not consume this level of energy whilst maintaining our activity levels, or if we increase our levels of activity whilst maintaining our energy input, our bodies will lose weight - it really is as simple as that! Your individual BMR can be calculated, and Empire Gym would be happy to provide you with a recommended personal daily calorie intake, if requested. Once you know your estimated daily energy requirements in calories, there is no mystery to adjusting your diet to fit your particular lifestyle. Your level and type of activity will determine the amount of protein, carbohydrate and fat you require to maintain or alter your body shape. So, one solution cannot fit all; we are all different and our individual diets should be balanced according to our lifestyle and training requirements. Those training to improve general health and fitness, with no specific goals or unique physiological needs, probably don’t need a particular nutrition strategy, other than a focus on food quality and quantity, whilst those with very specific fitness goals will need to consider more closely the proportions of protein, carbohydrate and fat intake. It is too early to report on the physical (measured) changes of our challengers, but the effect exercise is having on them is clear in the comments from Julia and Claire after their first month of regular training, When asked to describe the effects, Julie responded by saying that she is thoroughly enjoying the experience, although she still finds walking into the gym and getting on with exercise independently a bit daunting, and wonders why she is the only one with a red face! She says she has discovered muscles she had oct obe r 2 0 1 7

Health forgotten, due to them being a little sore on occasion, but the soreness is a reminder that she is working hard, and she is noticing a distinct improvement in stamina. A red face during training is perfectly normal as, during exercise, you breathe faster to maximise the oxygen in your blood, your heart beats faster and small blood vessels (capillaries) widen to deliver more oxygen to muscles; it is this widening of the capillaries that causes the flushing of your skin during exercise. Muscle soreness is normal after unaccustomed or strenuous exercise, and is caused by small-scale damage to muscle fibres during the muscle lengthening stage of exercise. Soreness is felt most strongly twenty-four to seventy-two hours after training, and muscles adapt to prevent this soreness if the exercise is repeated. Claire is frankly amazed at what her body is capable of and, after two weeks, noticed that her skin is clearer, her food tastes so much better, and stress caused by worrying about family caught up in “Hurricane Irma” was relieved a little by attending the gym and taking out her frustration on the gym equipment! In Week Two, Claire felt she had “hit a wall” and really wanted to comfort eat, but managed the situation by talking with friends and pushing herself to exercise, a solution she found to be extremely beneficial. When we exercise, our heart and lungs work harder at circulating blood to deliver oxygen to muscles, and this improved circulation also carries oxygen and nutrients to working cells in the skin. Improved blood flow also helps carry away waste products and helps keep your skin healthy and vibrant, according to Ellen Marmur MD, Associate Professor of Dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and author of “Simple Skin Beauty”. Most of us don’t eat in balance with our body’s needs and grab food when we can; we live in a world of convenience, and our eating habits follow the same pattern. We should eat to live and when we eat because our body needs sustenance, it is not surprising when the food seems to taste better. Stress causes a release of hormones which increases the heart and breathing rate, a reduction in digestive activity (you don’t feel hungry), and causes a release of glucose from the liver for immediate energy. These effects prepare

you to fight or flee from the cause of your stress, and it is therefore no surprise that exercising as soon as stress is triggered works in reducing the unpleasant physical and mental effects by reducing the levels of stress hormone and releasing endorphins (feel good hormones). So, the challenge continues and next month we will review the progress in respect of the challengers’ five components of fitness but, in the meantime, why not visit us at Empire Gym and overcome your fear of gym spaces? Starting at Nursery

tarting nursery is the beginning of a new and exciting stage in your child’s life. But it’s also the end of an era, so you may get a feeling of sadness or anxiety. When you’ve been by your baby’s side every waking moment, it’s hardly surprising that watching them disappear into a room of virtual strangers is enough to fill even the most confident parent with uncertainty. What if they cry when you leave? What if the other children don’t play with them? While these concerns are completely normal, it’s also good to stop and think that children are far more resilient than they appear. In fact, there’s a good chance your child is coping better with the transition than you are! Your child will need support to allow them to build close relationships with nursery staff and, of course, their new-found friends. A key component of the success in building these new bonds is for the nursery to offer you “settling-in sessions”. During these, the nursery staff should focus on making your child feel at ease; they should also provide you with as much reassurance as possible. Your child will be allocated a ‘key person’, who will become your first point of call for discussing the needs of your child and receiving feedback. The key person’s role is to: ● Respond to your child’s individual needs. ● Develop secure and trusting relationships with you and your child.

● Keep records of your child’s developmental and social progress ● Conduct observations of your child in the nursery setting and develop next steps for learning. Almost all children will settle into their new nursery and gradually get used to their new routine. Most children will react in some way; however, do not worry, reactions are normal. Just think, it won’t be long before you look back on this period and celebrate all the learning your child has achieved through attending nursery and socialising with their many new friends. Eventually, many parents encounter their child crying when they do not want to go home at the end of their session, as they are too busy discovering new toys, learning new skills or building relationships with their new friends. Method 1

In a large heavy bottomed pot, cook the onions in the oil until tender. Add the meat and brown on both sides. Season with salt and pepper.

Add the garlic, oregano, thyme, bay leaf, broth, wine (optional), and tomato paste. Stir all ingredients together. Cover and simmer gently for 2 hours, or until tender.

3 Stir the vegetables into the pot. Cover and simmer until the vegetables are tender, about 45 minutes. Adjust the seasoning. 4 Serve and enjoy!

Ready for Hallowe’en on October 31st? - What’s that all about then? Hallowe’en is a night of celebration, every year, on October 31st. The word Hallowe’en is a shortening of “All Hallows’ Evening”, (the day before All Hallows’ Day). Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting “haunted houses” and carving pumpkins or “jack-o-lanterns”.

Deeping Shopping Centre goes quiet in support of Autism Hour 2017 NewRiver, the UK’s largest shopping centre owner, will be supporting The National Autistic Society’s “Autism Hour” from Monday October 2nd. Shops and services across all thirty-three U.K.-wide shopping centres will take sixty minutes to provide shoppers with autism a break from the overload of ‘too much information’.

Sophie Allport Marks Ten Years with a Move to New Premises Lincolnshire homewares business, Sophie Allport, celebrates their tenth anniversary this year. The business was founded in 2007 by designer Sophie and her accountancy-trained brother, Jem, in a spare bedroom in Battersea, London. The business

has come a long way since then. 2009 saw a move to a garage office outside Stamford and then, in 2011, expansion took them to King Street Industrial Estate near Langtoft. The business is due to move to a new 35,000 square foot site in Bourne. Previously a distribution centre for Carlsberg, it has been renamed ‘The Old Brewery’ by Sophie and her team! “We are in the midst of upgrading the site with a plan to move the warehousing and offices in early October,” explained Jem. Sophie Allport is a thriving business,

employing nearly fifty staff and has around nine hundred stockists in the UK. “We have taken on an additional fifteen members of staff to help us in the lead-up to Christmas,” explained Jem Allport. “The move to The Old Brewery in Bourne will help us to be more efficient and also gives us space to continue to grow. It’s exciting times.” The business is famous for its fine bone china and kitchen fabrics, but you will also find a wide range of products for pets and children and a lovely collection of hats, scarves, home fragrance and bags.

The first frosts will probably appear this month, if we haven’t already experienced any in September, and the last of many of this year’s crops need picking, as they will not survive. Most of the work this month involves clearing the plot, composting the debris (unless it shows signs of disease); the larger the quantity, the better, as this helps the heap to warm up and accelerates the rotting process. Once the plot has been dug over, manure or fertilise and then cover the soil with plastic or weed suppressant for the winter, as this keeps the weeds at bay and, as it keeps the soil relatively warm, planting can start earlier in the spring. There is no need to dig in the manure as it will get drawn down into the soil over the winter months. An alternative to covering the soil is to plant green manure that will overwinter and can be dug in in the spring.

● Remove runner bean canes: if left in the ground, they will easily rot. ● Earth up, or stake (or both), Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants to prevent strong winds blowing them over. ● Earth up leeks to keep the stems blanched. ● Remove any yellowing leaves from brassicas as leaving them on the ground to rot risks spreading grey mould. ● Cut back Jerusalem artichokes. ● Pick all of the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana –this gives off ethylene gas which speeds up the ripening process.

There are very few crops that can be sown or planted out this month. However,

● Lift and store potatoes in a jute sack – eat any damaged ones first.

● Last chance to transplant spring cabbages –be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves.

● Cure pumpkins and squashes – cut and leave them to dry out in the sun, as this hardens the skins and they will keep for longer.

● Plant garlic if you haven’t already done so. ● Broad beans –early varieties should overwinter.

If you like to use herbs, you could sow a pot of basil seeds and put in a propagator or on a warm windowsill, keeping the soil moist. Parsley and mint can be dug up from an established clump, put in a pot and kept on the windowsill – much cheaper than buying pots from the supermarket!

● Overwintering onion sets. ● Rhubarb can be planted and if you already have rhubarb, it is entering its dormant period and can be divided and replanted any time up until March.

ince I first documented the use of CCleaner in this magazine back in 2012, the utility has undergone a number of new iterations. Let’s take a fresh look at the tool and see what it now has to offer. The first thing you need to do is to download the latest version (currently v5.03). Do a search in your browser for ‘CNET CCleaner’ and use the link on the CNET download.com site as this is guaranteed virusfree. Alternatively, download it from Piriform, the makers of the CCleaner application. The original pre-version 5 tools are still there, but have been improved upon, and there are a number of new utilities that you can use to clean up and manage your PC and startup. As I’ve covered how to run the tool previously, I will limit this article to show the options available. If you need help using CCleaner, then please contact LITES PC. Main Cleaner: On opening, the first screen you will see is the main cleaning screen. The elements selected by default are the ‘standard’ clean, and it is safe to click Run Cleaner to action the process. There are other, more in-depth

cleaning options to the left. Make sure you understand what these are before selecting these, (note: none of them remove your personal data, so that will be safe). Application Cleaner: CCleaner now has an application cleaner tab. Click on Applications, and you can use the tool to clean up your browsers (Chrome, IE, Firefox etc.), as well as other leading applications. This is very handy for when you are having issues with your browser, as it can remove items that are ‘clogging up’ your access, and possibly impacting internet availability. Registry Cleaner: The original Windows Registry cleaner is still there, but has been updated. This can be used to clean up the Windows Registry area to improve performance. Remember that, when making changes to the registry, you should always backup the registry first. You will be prompted to do this by CCLeaner. As before, this is a twostep process – Scan then Fix.

Startup allows you to view what programs start in the background when Windows fires up (very useful for doing a cleanup – remove anything you don’t need auto-started). Disk Analyzer checks your disk drive and displays the type of files that are using up your storage space. This is handy if you are running low on disk space and not sure why. Duplicate Finder searches your drive for duplicated files. System Restore allows you to manage your Windows-generated Restore points. Drive Wiper will remove data off any selected drive. It can be a simple Windows delete or a more in-depth secure data removal to prevent any data being retrieved. Options: These are the various options and settings associated with CCleaner. I’d recommend leaving these as they are, unless you have a specific need.

In the many years I’ve been using the tool, I have never had to restore a registry backup, but take one nonetheless; it doesn’t take long to do. Have you lost Child Benefit because of high income? - by Richard Ash, Director - Liberty Partnership Ltd

or some years now, the child benefit tax charge for higher earners has had an impact on families, and the implications of this charge aren’t always immediately obvious!

Child benefit can be claimed for all children under the age of 16. The current benefit is £20.70 per week for the first child and £13.70 for each additional child. So for two children, this is currently £1,788 per annum. The tax charge: Where a parent has not requested that HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) stop paying child benefit, a tax charge will be levied on the household’s highest earner if their personal taxable income exceeds £50,000 per tax year. It is interesting to note that, if both you and your partner have an income just below the £50,000 limit, you’ll still continue to receive the full amount of Child Benefit. How is the extra tax calculated? If you have an income of between £50,000 and £60,000 a year, the amount of extra tax you’ll have to pay will be 1% of the amount of Child Benefit you get for every £100 of your income above £50,000. So this would mean that, should your income be £55,000, this would lead to a 50% reduction in child benefit - £894 if you have two children.

So what can be done? Well, one possible solution to this could be to make an additional pension contribution. If you follow the above example of someone who earned £55,000, then that individual could make a £5,000 pension contribution. This individual is a higher rate tax payer and so can claim effective tax relief on the payment of £2,000 – the net cost is therefore £3,000. The pension contribution of £5,000 also reduces the net income to £50,000 and so 100% of the Child Benefit will be retained- £894 in the above example. If you follow the example through, a £5,000 pension contribution would receive £2,000 tax relief and £894 returned by way of child benefit, and so the true cost of the £5,000 contribution would be £2,104!!! There are other ways of doing it, including charity contributions. Whatever your circumstances, we believe that advice is essential. Discovering . . . A learned clergyman

he Deepings do not appear to have produced many famous sons but one man who was born here went on to make his mark in high places yet remains relatively unknown today. The area at that time was mainly agricultural and working families depended on the land for their livelihood but wages were so low that there was barely enough to feed hungry mouths let alone pay for an education, a luxury only enjoyed by the wealthy who could give their sons the advantage of a place at university which was the key to a successful life. Robert Tighe was born at Market Deeping in 1562 to such a family, one of the five children of John and Arabella Tighe, and went to both Oxford and Cambridge universities, a rare achievement, where he studied divinity and read languages before being ordained. In 1598, he became rector of St. Mary’s Church at Chiddingfold, Surrey and of All Hallows, Barking, London, serving both parishes until his death. He was also appointed as archdeacon of Middlesex in 1602, also holding this office for the rest of his life. The most distinguished phase of his career came in 1604 when he was appointed one of the ten members of the First

Westminster Company which was charged by King James I of England with the work of translating the first 12 books of the King James newly commissioned Bible. The King James Bible, or simply the Authorized Version, is an English translation of the Christian Bible for the Church of England begun in 1604 and completed in 1611.The King James Version includes the 39 books of the Old Testament, an inter-testamental section containing 14 books of the Apocrypha (most of which correspond to the Vulgate Deuterocanon adhered to by Roman Catholics), and the 27 books of the New Testament. Robert Tighe’s appointment to this distinguished academic group acknowledged his biblical scholarship and knowledge of languages. The task took almost four years but is remembered today whenever Genesis is quoted, by clergymen and congregations, schoolchildren and students as a reminder of the beginning of creation. He died in 1616 at age 54 and was buried in the chancel of his church in Chiddingfold. In his will he left his son, John, the sum of £1,000 per year, an enormous amount at that time, although there is no record of how Robert Tighe acquired such a sizeable amount of money or how his son spent his inheritance. oc t ob e r 2 0 1 7

Market Deeping’s very own Secret Forest! Very few locals will be aware of a unique piece of land hidden away in Market Deeping and all that happens there! It is part of the land owned by William Hildyard Church of England Nursery and Primary School and if you are a regular patron of the biggest supermarket in The Deepings, you will have driven or walked past it many times! This piece of land measuring roughly 100mx 30m is home to hundreds of native trees, plants, small mammals, birds, and insects and is a true haven of nature which goes by the name of “The Forest of Dreams”. The reason “The Forest of Dreams” exists is because 5 years ago, in 2012, an idea was put to the WH school governors to develop this unused, neglected and weedridden piece of land. It needed clearing, securing and planting with over 400 trees so it would be host to a unique innovative project for the school!! (More about that in a minute). Thankfully the Board of Governors agreed! Manpower and machinery for preparing the site for planting was very kindly donated by Burmor Construction, a planting design was very drawn up and donated by Tom Smith Garden Design, and larger trees were donated by families and local businesses such as The Stage, Layton Dry Cleaners and Fusion Interiors. Finally, the 400+ young trees saplings, were then donated by the Woodland Trust as part of their celebration on the Queen’s Jubilee year, allowing the land to be known as a “Jubilee Woodland”. So.. during a week in late November, when the weather ranged from pouring with rain to a heavy frost, every single child attending William Hildyard School had a great time planting all those trees. Not only would it be a woodland and a home for a wide range of wildlife and plants that would later establish themselves there, it

would be the base for the inspirational, educational practice of Forest School. What is Forest School? Most of you will have seen images on the TV and in magazines of children playing happily in mud, climbing trees, bug hunting, building dens, using tools and penknives as well as lighting fires…! Some of you will have very happy memories of these activities from when you were a child yourself. These activities are now typical in sessions of what is called Forest School which originated in Denmark over 20years ago. Forest School is often talked about as being a place or a type of activity, it is neither of these but an inspirational educational approach, ethos or “way” of helping children connect with and develop a love of the natural world. More specifically, sparking and developing a love for learning. Forest School essentially aims to excite and motivate children by catering for each individual child’s interests and needs, building confidence and independence to ultimately raise the child’s self-esteem. So everyone feels great after a Forest School session! Forest School leaders are specially trained to help

the children learn in their own way and to assist in developing their interests which means that within each session there will be several different activities taking place all at once. As Forest School takes places all the year round, each session is different. With the Great British seasons providing an ever changing backdrop, there is always something to ignite the children’s enthusiasm. There was only once that high winds and lightning prevented Forest School going ahead! As you can imagine, safety is of prime importance within a Forest School session and teaching children how to risk assess is integral, so they are able to take part in more risky activities. As The Forest is a typical wild space with nettles, thorns, wobbly logs to negotiate, trees to climb and uneven surfaces, the children definitely learn how to look after themselves- those skills which we regularly hear people say are being lost. All activities are linked to the curriculum, and as you can imagine, with the range of activities mentioned earlier and the size of the woodland, having plenty of adults on hand to observe and assist the children when necessary is vital. The children are all briefed of simple do’s and don’ts to keep them safe, the site, all activities and tool use are risk assessed as well as robust safety routines established immediately.

I have seen it’s magic work time and time again. Children have the time ( sessions are a half in length) and space to really discover and develop their interests in a consistently positive environment that it’s impact is obvious in the children’s general demeanour and contagious enthusiasm,” says Liz Blackler, project coordinator and Forest School leader. An exciting development for the Project came in 2015 when a sister site for The Forest of Dreams was created at St.Georges C of E School in a Stamford. Called “The Walk of Wonders”, “it didn’t take long for all the pupils there to take Forest School into their hearts too! It really opens up a whole new way of learning to children.” Liz says. This Autumn will see a celebration of the 5th Anniversary of Forest School at WH, with an Open Day and various activities for the children to take part in and will be held in conjunction with the William Hildyard School’s 50th Anniversary!

We’ve had the last Bank Holiday before Christmas, the children have gone back to school looking smart in their uniforms, and there is a distinct autumn feel to the weather. The harvest is in and some fields have already been set with next year’s crop. Christmas looms on the distant horizon, but there is plenty to do before then.

The Council welcomed civic guests from neighbouring towns and councils to its Civic Service held in St Guthlac’s Church. Everyone was made to feel very welcome and our thanks go to The Rector and to the Town Clerk who worked hard to make this a very happy occasion. Thanks also go to the guard of honour formed by the Army Cadets outside the Church.

The annual Duck Race was, as usual, a great fun event. I’m sure Penelope, the Carnival Queen, enjoyed sending the ducks on their way down the river. Congratulations to the Deeping Lions who organised the event. Their commitment to raising money for charity knows no bounds. Thank you. It was a great privilege to attend the awards ceremony at the Deepings Library. Many children accepted the Summer Reading Challenge and succeeded. There were many smiley faces going home clutching certificates and rewards. The library staff did sterling work over the summer, encouraging the young people. They were surprised at the number of children taking part, and they are already focusing on next year when they expect even more to ‘take up the challenge’. Well done everyone. On a more sombre note, the Town Council have been very dismayed and upset by the behaviour of some young people who have found it amusing to desecrate the cemetery and Spinney by running about and being very disruptive. Please treat these areas and our Council staff with respect - these are places for reflection and for families to remember their loved ones. The Council is pleased that the John Eve field and the Glebe field, together with the Riverside Park and Welland Gardens have been enjoyed by so many during the summer. The Council’s thanks go to their staff who take such pride in caring for these places. One of the charities I have chosen to support this year is ‘Genetic Disorders UK’. It is a charity that helps families who have children with a genetic disorder, such as Cystic Fibrosis, Albinism, Downs Syndrome and achondroplasia (dwarfism). There are, of course, many other genetic problems. Friday September 22nd is JEANS FOR GENES Day. There will be a coffee morning in the Town Hall from 10am until 12noon. Please come if you can, to support this charity. Thank you. 52
