Welcome to Your November Issue.

It’s getting closer by the day, and I’m talking turkey, (along with trees, tinsel and trimming-up!), as the whole wonderful Christmas season gathers momentum once more. This month’s issue features many local restaurants and hostelries offering all manner of attractions for the festive weeks ahead, so remember to book early for your special events.

We’ve also got a distinct “doggy feel” to this month’s offering, with the Top Dog of 2017 results, a local dog-walking business featured, and some very topical advice from the vets regarding Bonfire Night. Finally, that leads me, almost seamlessly, on to our colleague on the Discovering Whittlesea magazine, who tells us that he’s hoping for a much better organised Bonfire Night this year. He thought that when last year’s fireworks were all let off, out of sequence, it was bang out of order. (Boom, Boom!)

As we await “Storm Brian”, (our next meteorological visitor to wreak havoc, following Hurricane Ophelia), I can’t help feeling some sympathy for all Brians out there. Remembering the harmless snail on “The Magic Roundabout”, how on earth can we get cross with anything Brian-like? But wait, there’s dear old Brian Blessed, whose booming voice could blow any house down!

Whatever is thrown at us, though, we’re used to it by now, and with this month’s issue of your favourite magazine safely delivered to your door and now in your hands, you can turn your attention to matters, much more interesting than the weather. Our regular contributors continue to provide a wonderful array of both useful and interesting information for you all, and this month we’re pleased to be able to flag up some extremely worthwhile, forthcoming events, in our “What’s on” section.

Bonfire Night - Advice and Ideas

B

onfire night will soon be lighting up our skies once again and, for children, it’s one of the most exciting evenings of the year. Whether you’re heading to a local bonfire party or throwing your own, here are some tips and a couple of craft ideas to ensure that it’s a magical time for all,

Bonfire night craft ideas for the family Zooming rocket ● Make a tube shape from card.

What will you need?

As with any outdoor British event, you need to take the right supplies and think ahead:

● Then cut round a circle and snip from one edge into the centre and fold round to make a cone for your rocket.

● Wrap up warm – If you’re going to be standing around in the cold, make sure everyone is wrapped up warm: hats, scarves, gloves (especially for holding sparklers) and warm socks are a must.

● Tape on the cone, then snip some streamers (you could use tissue or crepe paper or colourful strips from a magazine). Add glitter or felt pen designs for added pizzazz.

● Stay dry – Packing waterproofs is also a good move, if you’re planning to outsmart the British weather. ● Protect ears – If you know your child is sensitive to noise, it’s well worth investing in a pair of ear plugs or ear defenders to help muffle the bangs. ● Take a buggy – Negotiating the crowds at a fireworks display isn’t easy with children in tow. If you know that little legs are likely to get tired, take a buggy along. ● Take supplies – Don’t forget to take plenty of snacks and drinks, too, unless you’re willing to spend hours queuing for overpriced hotdogs and toffee apples … and maybe even miss the display!

children’s painted hand prints, cut them out and stick them on to card to resemble a bonfire.

The Empire Gym “Three Month Challenge” - October Review

T

he three Empire Gym challengers have now been training for two months. At the start, in early September, we measured the challengers’ five components of fitness: (cardiovascular efficiency, body composition (% fat), muscle strength, muscle endurance and flexibility) and then again in early October.

The chart below demonstrates the progress for Julie Sallis and Claire Hadley after one month of regular gym training and four Personal Training sessions.

Sarah Asplin As Sarah started her challenge in September, one month later than Julie and Claire, we are not yet able to make comparisons so her progress will be shown in next month’s issue. She has felt frustrated at her late start to the programme but, being a pragmatist, she says, “At least I have made a start and at three weeks in, I have “suffered” at the hands of both Matt and Dave, having had two P.T sessions. I’ve had muscle ache after both sessions, so they must have both awoken some long-forgotten and underused muscles!

Since her initial visit to the gym Sarah has lost 4kg. (8.8 lbs) in weight, and is testament to her determination to succeed. She sticks rigidly to her diet plan and gives absolutely everything during PT sessions.

She says, “I can’t say that I love the gym yet, and my legs still wobble like a jelly when I wear leggings – but I keep reminding myself, it’s a work in progress!”

The biggest changes for Sarah in respect of her diet are: portion size and the control of macro-nutrient ratios (protein, carbohydrate and fat). She has changed the size of her dinner plate (to a smaller one!) and has reduced carbohydrates on non-training days. She has embarked upon an eating regime which involves no food after 9 pm, and rising early in the morning to train in the gym before eating a light breakfast. This ensures that her stored energy fuels her training sessions until her target weight loss is achieved.

Health The progress of Julie and Claire continues, and four of the five components of fitness scream success, as they show significant levels of improvement. Both ladies are very much more active than before they embarked upon the challenge, so the Empire Gym exercise regime is undoubtedly making them fitter.

Julie says “I have noticed that my body shape has changed and I am enjoying the classes free to members; I can now stand alongside other members and not feel out of place.

Since starting my programme, I have tried spinning (indoor cycling) with Vicki Millar and, although it is tough, I enjoyed the experience. The Les Mills Body Pump class with Pauline Davies is also fun, and I have now progressed to HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) on Fridays with Matt or Dave Weston. This takes all my concentration, but it’s a session, after which you leave feeling that you have definitely put some work in. “

Claire comments, “I am really pleased with my fitness improvement, as I know I have been putting the effort in. I knew my weight would be my greatest challenge due to my struggle with food, as I use it as my comfort and security”. Claire’s body fat percentage is in the high range and her eating disorder was causing additional weight gain.

However, since starting the activity programme, her weight has stabilised even though she struggles with her diet. This stabilisation is due to more energy being consumed by the additional activity. Claire continues, “I start my Cognitive Behavioural Therapy this week and, hopefully, this will get me focussed, but I am determined to prove to myself that I can do this; the challenge isn’t over yet and I will achieve a weight loss! I have also discovered a chat room online to discuss mental health issues which has been invaluable. It is completely anonymous as well, so, if you’re interested, go to elefriends.org.uk The challengers are clearly focussed on gym activities and are realising many fitness improvements and health benefits. Weight loss, whilst an important target for all three, will be achieved over time, and individuals will vary in the rate at which weight reduces. In some cases, weight will remain constant while body composition and shape

changes; in other cases, weight will be lost as body shape changes. It really depends on the person’s training style and the quality of diet control.

There is no doubt, though, that all are becoming fitter and healthier, due to regular exercise, made more interesting by the range of classes and activities available and the quality of the trainers and staff at Empire Gym. We will be measuring their five components of fitness once again early in November and will bring you details of their further progress in the December issue.

With the recent collapse of Monarch Airlines, I thought I would write about financial protection this month. I have received many calls from people who have booked directly on the internet and don’t know their rights and who to turn to for help. If you’re affected and still have questions, I hope I can help.

If you booked a flight directly with Monarch.

Hearing that the company you›ve booked your holiday with has gone into administration can be extremely stressful. It can also be confusing to know where to turn, how your holiday is protected, and what steps to take to make things right.

Check your travel insurance to check whether it includes cover for supplier failure. If you paid or part-paid by credit card and the value of the flight(s) is between £100 and £30,000, you can claim under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1979

If you do not have an ATOL certificate, or the booking was made after this date, you are not ATOL protected. Check if your travel company operates a full financial protection policy. If not, you will need to try the insurance or charge back routes.

You will need to make a claim through the CAA and you will receive a full refund.

If you booked an ATOL package holiday with another tour operator that included a Monarch flight.

Preheat the oven to 200˚C/Gas Mark 6.

Rub oil, sea salt and black pepper into the potato skin.

With a sharp knife cut a deep cross into the top of the potato.

Place directly onto oven shelf – cut side up.

Bake for between 1 hour and 1 hour and 15 minutes. The potato is ready when the skin is crispy and the potato is soft in the middle.

We now have a support coffee morning where we meet and chat in Wake House, North Street from 10.00am – 12.00 noon. This informal meet will alternate every two weeks with our normal meeting on the last Monday in the month in the Salvation Army Church in Manning Road from 10.00am – 12.00 noon.

The Potting Shed This month is not as restful as one might think, as the allotment needs a good tidying-up. Don’t leave old crops to rot as they may harbour pests and disease. Also, a priority this month is to give the allotment or vegetable patch a thorough digging over, and spread manure over the surface, and also to manure or compost the bean trench. If you have a soil with a low pH, add lime, but not at the same time as compost as they react together. When the plot is free of weeds, cover it for the winter to keep off the worst of the rain and prevent weed growth; this will also keep the soil warmer when you are ready to plant new crops in the spring.

● Leaf mould makes good mulch and, at this time of year, there is plenty to be had. You can easily make a cage to contain the leaves, using four stakes and stapling chicken wire around them. Just throw the leaves in and leave them for a year to rot down. ● Secure covers over compost heaps/bins. Although the material needs to be damp, winter rain and snow will saturate it and slow the rotting process down. ● Plan the crop rotation for next year. Planting one group of vegetables in the same ground, year after year, increases the risk of a build-up of disease. There are websites that provide planners, and one such example is www. gardenplanner.suttons.co.uk.

An important task for November is pruning, as fruit trees and bushes have shed their leaves and are dormant for the winter. Also remove any netting from fruit cages to allow the birds to eat insects and eggs. Bare-rooted fruit trees, bushes and canes are also dormant and therefore, now is the time to plant them whilst the ground is not too wet or cold. Prepare the planting holes by digging in good compost or manure and, when they are planted, spread a mulch of well-rotted manure around the base.

● Dismantle bean canes, if you haven’t already, as leaving them in the ground will cause the bases to rot. ● Start to harvest winter cabbage, Brussels sprouts, leeks and parsnips. Wait until after a frost for the parsnips, as the frost encourages the sugars which give parsnips their sweetness. ● Plant garlic cloves, early “overwintering” broad beans (either in the ground or in pots), peas, shallots and onions.

Other tasks for this month include:● Propagate rhubarb crowns by lifting and dividing into smaller pieces, planting at the same depth in their new position.

Who to Trust A

number of clients in recent weeks have sought our advice on ‘Probate Trusts’ or ‘Protection Trusts’, presumably as someone has attempted to sell these products to them.

We are seeing a growing trend whereby a salesperson will offer a free initial legal consultation, often even in your own home.

This special offer will be available for a short period and will sound too good to be missed.

We would not necessarily say that this is a scam, but our clients are right to be wary. If you do decide to take up the offer, then we would strongly suggest that a solicitor, regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, reviews the paperwork before you commit yourself. Trusts, when properly used, can be beneficial in certain circumstances, but advice should first be sought from a specialist.

The terms ‘Probate Trusts’ and ‘Protection Trusts’ are artificial creations with promises to protect against care home fees or probate costs. Normally, it involves creating a trust and transferring your main home into the names of the trustees, who then hold the property on behalf of the beneficiaries of the trust. Some of the fees we have seen quoted by the salesperson run into thousands of pounds!

In reality, ‘Probate Trusts’ can be of little or no benefit. A Grant of Probate (or likewise) is more than often required in any event following death, regardless of whether the main home still belongs to the deceased or has been placed in a trust, and the cost of obtaining probate is not as expensive as you may think.

For ‘Protection Trusts’ used to allegedly reduce care home fees, if this involves placing your main home into trust and you continue to reside in the home, the full value of the home can still be taken into account when the local authority make any care funding assessment. This is because the local authority may succeed in claiming that you deliberately deprived yourself of the asset to avoid or reduce the cost of funding for your own care.

Gusty winds can attack fences and roof tiles, and heavy rain can play havoc with guttering and drains, as the seasons change. Bonfire Night - Great Fun - BUT NOT FOR PETS!

t’s coming up to that time of year again that a lot of pet owners dread... Bonfire Night and “firework season”!

Now is the time to start thinking about how to try and make this time less stressful for your pets. There are many products on the market, but not all will suit every pet.

Plug-in diffusers are great, but you do need to plug them into a spot where your pet spends most of their time. Cats that roam a lot may not benefit much from these, and if you have a large house, then you may need more than one of them. If you decide to use these, then plug them in now so they have time to start working before the season gets into full swing.

There are now many types of ‘calming’ capsules/tablets on the market, and we have had quite a success with these over the past few years. As with most of these things though, they are not 100% guaranteed to work, but will usually ‘take the edge off’ for most dogs and cats. Start using these now, so they have time to get into your pet’s system; your veterinary practice can prescribe these over the counter.

Try and keep pets inside, which I know is easier said than done with cats. Most cats will want to get away from the noise, so make them a cosy hideaway indoors now, so they can get used to it and have somewhere familiar to hide. This can also apply for dogs. Don’t get angry with any pets that show destructive behaviour, as this will only make it, and their fear, much worse.

Rabbits and other outdoor pets ideally should be brought indoors in their enclosures during this season.

They can often be forgotten, but these pets are very easily stressed. If you cannot bring them indoors, then make sure they have plenty of extra bedding to hide in. Cover their enclosure with a blanket to shield them from the fireworks, and to try to block out some of the noise. If you are having a bonfire, then please check for hedgehogs and any other wildlife before setting it alight!

Sound desensitization DVDs and downloads have recently come onto the market and can also be great, but they do take a bit of work from you as an owner. Make sure

History

Discovering . . . Market Deeping in 1850 Rex Needle

T

he changing face of our towns and villages over the years provide a fascinating study of social trends and we have many sources for this information, notably the street and trade directories published in past centuries which give detailed accounts of people and places, thus providing a word picture from the past.

They give us the opportunity to take a look at Market Deeping in 1850 when the population was a mere 1,219 at the last census (1841), one sixth of that today, yet the businesses listed in Slater’s Directory of Lincolnshire suggest a sizeable market town with a wide variety of shops and businesses. The present bridge over the River Welland had just been built, “a new erection which caused the removal of some unsightly buildings and obtained a fine opening to the market place, thus greatly improving the appearance of the town”.

Draining the surrounding fen and turning marsh into cultivated land had created a thriving agricultural based economy with beneficial results for the inhabitants. Many wealthy citizens lived here while apart from working the land the people pursued diverse occupations that have long since disappeared such as basket makers, braziers, coopers, farriers, glaziers, rope and twine makers, harness makers, stonemasons and even a straw bonnet maker.

The public houses were always busy while the number in business at that time suggests that money was not short for the working classes. Many have since closed, such as the Black Horse, the Bluebell and the Odd Fellows Arms in Church Street, the Bartle Arms, King’s Head and Red Lion in High Street, the George and Wheatsheaf in Towngate, although the White Horse in Church Street, the Bull and the New Inn [now the Deeping Stage] in the market place have survived.

There was a street market every Wednesday and fairs in May and October. Two endowed schools provided education for boys and girls and a mechanics’ institution had been established in 1848 while matters spiritual were served by the parish church of St Guthlac and a chapel each for the Independents and the Wesleyan Methodists.

This snapshot of Market Deeping from the mid-19th century concludes that “the town has participated in the beneficial results of draining the fen and may be considered to be prosperous” yet since then it has grown into a small rural conurbation popular with commuters who now work elsewhere and we can only wonder what it will look like another 150 years from now.

ello, and a very warm welcome to you all.

Another summer gone and we can now expect unsettled weather, alongside shorter daylight hours in the lead-up to the festive Christmas period.

We need to consider these environmental conditions, as they can easily have an impact on our roads and how we have to adapt our driving accordingly.

Ensure your vehicles have the necessary road safety checks, to assist with the driving and road-holding of your vehicle, and I’m sure the local vehicle garages in the Deepings would be able to offer this service for you.

As technology continues to improve, there is an ever-increasing amount of driving aids available to us to help drivers in many ways. These include fitted sat-navigation, parking sensors, headlight and lane positioning sensors, to name but a few. However, they do not replace the driver, and it is still the responsibility of us all to ensure that our decisionmaking ensures a safe drive.

Another driving aid addition is the use of in-car camera recording devices. Many of the large retailers

offer a wide range of these, and offer great advice and normally a fitting service. The devices can be either front or rear-facing, or both simultaneously.

I believe that the invention of in-car camera kits is a superb addition to any vehicle. The information that can be downloaded in the event of an incident could be invaluable. What’s more, many instructors like myself are now having these fitted into our vehicles, as they can be very useful for teaching purposes.

Certain situations can be replayed to the learner driver and used as a live, learning example.

Please contact me if you are wishing to start learning to drive or take any refresher sessions. Don’t shy away from the possible tricky driving conditions which the forthcoming months may bring, as I believe it provides a perfect opportunity to gain valuable experience.

W

ith more than one hundred people already arrested in Lincolnshire alone this year, this month’s focus is on relatively new, and littleknown methods of dealing with suspected drug-drivers.

Roadside Drug Testing – How things have developed.

The breathalyser has been used to test for alcohol for years, but until 2015 there was no equipment that allowed for drivers to be tested for drugs in their system.

Previously, drivers suspected of driving whilst under the influence of drugs would have been subjected to a roadside impairment test which saw officers looking for signs such as unsteadiness, poor co-ordination, or poor logical or verbal reasoning.

In 2015, officers in Lincolnshire were equipped with a simple pocket-sized device that indicates the presence of drugs in a driver’s system, and all from a simple saliva sample.

Facts and Figures Three local men were arrested in our area during September on suspicion of driving whilst having drugs in their system, over the prescribed limit. Across the county as a whole, 105 drivers have been arrested during 2017 with the help of the new device.

By putting the tip of the device onto the tongue of the driver, saliva will be analysed and the result displayed within five minutes. If the driver has cocaine or cannabis in their system, the test will show a striking red line, which then sees the driver arrested and taken to the police station. Once in custody, a blood sample is taken and sent away to determine the true amount of controlled drug in their system.

With Lincolnshire having one of the highest rates of death and serious injury on our roads, having the technology to quickly and effectively get drug drivers off the road is a positive step in making our roads safer.

Penalties If you are convicted of drug driving, you will get: Minimum one year driving ban, (a Boston man was recently given a three year ban).

An unlimited fine.

A criminal record.

Driving licence endorsed for eleven years, confirming that you have been convicted of drug driving.

Possible prison term of up to six months.

IN THE HOT SEAT In our Hot Seat this month, we welcome Paul Briggs, who opened “Briggs Residential” in 2001, having been an estate agent for the previous fifteen years. He has therefore been in estate agency for thirty-one years.

He is married to Paula and they have two children, Laura (22) and Harry (17), who are both in full-time employment, with Laura being a PA at Travis Perkins and Harry working at a jewellers in Peterborough.
