Welcome to Your March Issue. Mother’s Day on March 11th gives us all the opportunity to show mum just how much she means to us by showering her with hugs, kisses and gifts. This month’s issue includes some touching thoughts from our young contributor, Holly Jean, and what Mother’s Day means for her. We’re hoping that you also enjoy reading our section on Schools News, which brings together some of the ways in which our dear little ones are enjoying those “best days of their lives”. I don’t know why, but it brought to mind this gem from the American novelist, Peter De Vries – “A mother’s role is to deliver children obstetrically once, and then by car forever after”. “Ain’t No Hood Like Motherhood” – by Holly-Jean

It’s Mother’s Day! And whether you’re celebrating your mum, your grandmother, your carer, or even a friend who acts a little too parent-y sometimes – Happy Mother’s Day.

y identity rests solely and firmly on this: “I am my mother’s daughter.”

As some of us females get older, we often hear the phrase: “You are JUST like your mother”, “Ooh, apple didn’t fall far from the tree now did it?” And so on and so forth. We start to look like our mothers and start to do and say things where we get that chill as we feel ourselves morphing into our parental figure. Now, for some of us, this is a blissful change, graceful and beautiful, showcasing our own maternal instincts. For others, it glistens through in a less graceful way and more of a ‘slap in the face’ kind of way. I didn’t notice at first, but here are just a few things that I started to become aware of; the sudden outbursts of sarcasm. At any given time, I will just explode into a tyranny of rage and wit. The God awful road rage at the smallest thing. Flailing my arms in the air and screaming through the misted-up glass. And then this... this is the big one. After all my life boasting about my 20/20 vision, here I am, wearing glasses to write this, holding reading material at arm’s length. Put mum and I together and well, we’re like twins. So, these are some things that mum, and I definitely have in common, but there are a million other things that outweigh these little quirky qualities, all positive I’ll add.

The amount of things my mum has taught me throughout my life is uncountable. I’m so lucky to have such a kind, caring, selfless, funny and lovely role model, who puts everyone before herself and tries her hardest no matter what. I have learnt everything from my mum and model myself on her entirely. Obviously, I am not a mum. I know nothing about motherhood. All I know, is the way I was brought up – and I had a pretty amazing childhood. Some would say that your younger years are when your mother has the biggest role in your life. And yes, I agree to an extent. However, I would say my mother has had the biggest impact on my life as a young adult. The 3am talks, taking the mickey out of each other, the girly things, the advice, everything – I’m really lucky. I have some amazing childhood memories with my mum, but what I favour as much and more is the opportunity to make more memories with her, less as her child and more as her best friend. When people tell me “well aren’t you like your mum!” it gives me an unexplainable feeling because at the end of the day, if I grow up to be half of the amazing woman my mum is, then I’ve achieved all I can. Thank you for all you are. This day is for you. Happy Mother’s Day mum.

Finding the Hidden by Lydia Pinfold

volution has ensured that almost all animals of the natural world have an amazing skill to keep themselves hidden from predators and, importantly, from their prey; the tiger with stripes to replicate grassland and the chameleon which can melt into their environment. The same can be said for animals within the UK. Lattersey Nature Reserve, located just outside Peterborough, has a wealth of diversity with mammals and reptiles, all with the ability to blend into their natural surroundings. The common lizard has dark colours, which blend naturally into the earth or, in this case, a fallen tree trunk, allowing the lizard to catch the heat of the sun and remain hidden from predators. The muntjac deer within the reserve also camouflage themselves amongst the tree trunks and tall grass.

Check the weather before photographing outdoors. It is dull and overcast at the moment, and this can ruin even the most perfect of pictures. So, open your lens aperture to around f/2.8 or f/4 to let in as much light as possible.

If you plan to visit this reserve, where there are no hides available, it would require a keen eye, to scan the landscape and the patience to sit and listen. If it is the reptiles that you hope to find, the best time to see both lizards and snakes is on a mild day when the sun

is shining. Take the time to look around the undulating, moss covered areas, which line the path throughout the reserve. When setting up your camera for such an outing, have your lens on manual focus. This will help to pick out the mammals and reptiles through any dense foliage. The automatic focus on your camera, will have the unwanted habit of picking out the thinnest blades of grass instead!

Bacon and Egg Cups Why not treat your mum with this unbelievably simple breakfast/brunch recipe? These are so easy that a recipe is barely needed, but here you go:

Method 1 2

Pre-heat the oven and bake the bacon according to the package instructions. When the bacon is mostly done, still soft and not crunchy, remove it from the oven. When it’s cool enough to touch, wrap it around the cups in the muffin tin, placing another small piece in the bottom of each cup for a ‘bottom’. Crack an egg into each muffin cup, lightly salt and pepper it, then bake at 350°C for about 20 minutes or, when the egg is lightly touched, it bounces a bit and doesn’t stick to your finger. Cooking them this way makes the eggs over medium, so some of the yolk is cooked and some is runny. Perfection.

3 Serve and eat within a few minutes of being taken out of the oven. Great with a side of hash browns! Yummy, Mummy!

In the Hot Seat

IN THE HOT SEAT I am a farmer, basically because my father was a farmer, my mother’s parents and father’s parents were farmers, and so were their parents! My interests are all related to the countryside, farming and wildlife. In 1982, I did a breeding bird survey on my farm in Deeping St. Nicholas, and I have done it every year since. By 1992, I found that corn buntings had declined by 90% and skylarks had declined by 90%. This worried me so much that I set about trying to reverse that decline, by feeding birds in my farmyards with wheat and oilseed rape. So many came that it was a spectacle, up to 800 buntings and finches in the yard at any one time! I thought other people might like to see it, so I organised an open day, where two people asked me if I could sell them some bird seed, which I duly did. The next year I had the same spectacle, so I organised another open day, again I gave all the proceeds to the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, and again people asked me to sell them some bird food. About eleven years ago, the Wildlife Trusts came to me and asked me if I would be interested in supplying Wildlife Trust members with bird seed. I said we would and, for being able to do that, we pay the Wildlife Trusts 5% of every transaction. Those 5%s have already added up to well over £1m! Unfortunately, our countryside is getting less food in it, there are less hedges and less weeds in our crops and so less insects upon which birds feed their young. For a farmer to look after the wildlife, he should restore a few of the features that we used to have in our countryside, such as planting hedges, digging ponds, leaving wide margins to his fields and restoring his old barns, but very few are willing to do this sort of thing, even with government help. Those are the sorts of things I have done, and I have even turned one farm over to organic farming, and now my farms are full of wildlife. I have won more conservation awards than any other farmer in the UK and was proud to be awarded the MBE in 2006 for my services to farming and wildlife.

Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood? I was born in the house where I live now, and so was my father and my grandfather. One thing that sticks in my mind is seeing a brambling on the bird table when I was eight or nine years old.

How would you describe yourself in just a few words? Farmer and conservationist. If there was one thing which you could change about the Deepings, what would it be and why? Stop it expanding, it is big enough.

Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? My mother and father steered me along through my childhood, whilst Tony Cook from Peakirk taught me how to ring birds, and that has been a great influence on me.

What advice would you give to a “sixteen-year-old you”? Don’t smoke or drink - if you don’t drink you can always wake up with a clear head!

The Renu Golden Rules of Good Hair Care by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness

he hair team at Renu give their top five golden rules for healthier, happier and more manageable tresses to banish bad hair days forever……

Wash your hair two to three times a week, max. Your hair’s natural oils are designed to condition and protect, so when you shampoo daily, it strips these vital oils away. This creates a vicious circle of overproduction of oils and a need to shampoo more often. Dry shampoo would help to refresh your roots whilst helping you to retain the essential moisture your hair needs.

Avoid hot showers, and shampoo your scalp, not your ends. Healthy, beautiful shiny hair starts in the shower, so make sure you use the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type and level of damage. Giving your head an invigorating massage as you shampoo is a good way to encourage blood circulation and helps to detoxify the scalp. Blasting your scalp with extremely hot water will dry out your hair and create tangles that could result in breakage.

Towel dry your hair before applying conditioner. Excess water in your hair will hinder the conditioner. If you are short of time, at least squeeze out excess water and concentrate on application on the ends. Invest in a few good quality conditioners and leave-in treatments or hair masks, especially if you have coloured hair.

Brush your hair twice a day, from the bottom up. Healthy hair needs regular brushing, but don’t tear mindlessly through your locks. Work from the bottom up, once in the morning and once before going to bed, for about a minute each time. Make sure that you wide tooth comb on wet hair; don’t brush it, as it’s much more susceptible to breakage.

Use a low heat setting for hair drying and point the nozzle down, not side on. Overheating your hair is one of the worst things you can do for it. Keep your dryer on a low setting and a good distance from your hair. Move your hair around and use protective styling products before using heatstyling tools. Take your time for a decent blow dry on day one, rock it out on day two and tie it back on day three. Making your style last a few days will really help to prevent damage.

Practitioner Profile - Phoebe Smith M.Ost. - Registered Osteopath What made you consider a career in osteopathy? Osteopathy was a career that appealed to me for some time before I began my training. I saw a lot of sense in the concept of treating a patient as a whole person, rather than a collection of symptoms. When I was fourteen, our osteopath provided treatment for my mum who had injured her back. She was able to avoid surgery and return to normal life in a relatively short time. Up until this point, I had wanted to study medicine. However, I was so impressed by this holistic alternative that I began to consider a career as an osteopath instead. In the end, I took the long way around, studying languages and spending several years in Canada, before training as a mature student.

Where did you study your degree and where do you practice now? I trained at the College of Osteopaths where I completed my masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree. I gained some external qualifications and set up as a mobile manual therapist while I was studying; this work, together with over 1300 hours of pre-qualification clinical experience, smoothed the transition into my new career following graduation. I joined Bridge View Osteopaths outside Boston in February 2017, and The Wellhead Practice in Bourne last November, and between these clinics and my mobile work Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m pretty busy these days! What type of patients do you see? Everyone! I have a special interest in paediatric patients and in musculoskeletal problems associated with pregnancy, but I see a whole range of patients from babies to the elderly, and everyone in between.

I use a variety of techniques so that I can tailor a treatment to the most appropriate for the patient. I would use very different techniques for a six-week-old with digestive problems than I would use for a twenty-four-year-old with back ache, for example. What do you enjoy most about osteopathy? One of the loveliest things about being an osteopath is that our appointments are nice and long so I can take time to really get to know my patients, and understand how their lives are affected. I know what it means for them to be able to get back to work or to the sport they love, to be able to walk to the shops unassisted or merely to be out of pain. For this reason, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll never tire of watching patients improve, helping them to understand and manage their condition and knowing that their lives are changed for the better.

ince the inception of Empire Gym in June 2014, we have always tried to innovate. It is very important that we demonstrate that our approaches and ideas are authentic, genuine and original. Indeed, there have been times when we have tried new ideas and got them wrong. But over time, authenticity always overrides the dangers of taking honest risks for the right reasons. Indeed, our ideas have always been new, original and our own. We own our successes and we own our failures. From the very beginning, the risk in renovating and resurrecting the old Empire Cinema building and bringing it back to its former glories was a considerable one. The building is a metaphor for the business that now calls it home. In making the building what it is now, (modern, fresh, vibrant, colourful and fit for purpose), we literally had to “dig deep” and find out where it was necessary to strengthen and build solid foundations and structures, while maintaining respect for the Art Deco authenticity of its façade and its place in Deeping’s history. So, what do we do that is so innovative, so original and so authentic? Well it starts with the smallest details… Empire members know that it is now tradition to sanitise your hands as you enter and leave the gym. A simple idea, but part of Empire culture, so much so that people don’t even notice they do it anymore. A smile and a hello when you arrive. A moment of conversation and the willingness to take an interest in something personal to you, or to notice if you’ve had a haircut or your nails painted. Ultimately, it’s nice to be nice and to bring a smile to a person’s face. Cleaning the gym during opening hours. accept that cleanliness is part of Empire culture. The mix of people in the gym at any given time. We have a cross section of society bringing their own authenticity and brilliance to the Empire environment. Then there are new and innovative ideas to ensure we give back to the community, like officially adding the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall logo to the Empire Gym logo in order to demonstrate our commitment over a sustained time to raising money for this wonderful organisation. Ultimately though, we are probably most proud of the

way we have introduced a change to the culture of exercise in the Deepings, and possibly even in greater Peterborough and beyond.

The circuit classes have grown as the gym has grown. They have changed as the gym and its equipment has changed. They have evolved as our membership has grown and evolved and as training styles have advanced and, indeed, as our members have advanced, improved and flourished.

A change to the way people think, feel and do when it comes to fitness. Traditionally, gyms or fitness facilities choose a style. It may be that a gym is known for bodybuilding. It may be that it is a facility known just for a range of fitness classes. It may be known for something as specific as ‘Crossfit’. Or it may be a sprawling corporate entity that offers ‘everything to all people’, including a swim, a sauna, a beauty parlour and a coffee shop, but that lacks in the personal approach. What we have created is real.

We have added and invested. We have watched and listened. We have learned. We have evolved. You’ll now see battle ropes, the big blue training rig and monkey bars, rope pulleys, weighted sleds, Stairmaster machines, Sissy Squats, the tyre to flip, slam balls to slam … and so much more.

“Legal Spring Cleaning” By Richard Wood – Double & Megson Solictors Now that spring is within sight, it is a good time to review our circumstances. It is always advisable to keep our wills up-to-date, especially if new family members have been born or sadly, where a loved one has died. Sometimes, our income or capital position may change and that should be reviewed, as well as considering if we are affected by the government allowances for residential property in relation to Inheritance Tax. As we get a little older, we should consider whether we need assistance managing our financial affairs by creating a Lasting Power of Attorney. This can allow us to manage finance and property and/or health and welfare. Although we must

decide individually what is best for each of us, this assistance can provide valuable support, especially when feeling less able to get out or manage our affairs. The Lasting Power of Attorney appoints trusted persons to act for us in specified circumstances. If we lose our capacity, it can take longer to resolve matters with higher fees than under the Lasting Power of Attorney option. If a couple are unmarried, they should consider their legal position so that their wishes for one another are protected in the sad event of one of them predeceasing. This can be very important, especially when one of them is not mentioned on the Title Documents/Deeds. A will would allow that couple to protect one another, to limit issues which can affect them when they are unmarried. The Lasting Power of Attorney option can also help to limit risks, if one of them becomes incapable of managing their affairs. We should also check that those holding our pensions and certain life insurances know who we have nominated to benefit from any lump sums as they pass outside of our wills. The same applies for death in service.

Deeping Receives Safe Car Parking Title The Deeping Shopping Centre has been awarded the Safer Parking Scheme’s “Park Mark” for the first time, making it the only car park in Market Deeping to have this recognition. The award comes less than a year since a new parking scheme was introduced at the centre which has granted shoppers easier access to the centre.

A Park Mark is awarded for parking facilities that pass a rigorous risk assessment, conducted by the police and the British Parking Association. The assessments include management and maintenance of the facility, ensuring that there are appropriate levels of surveillance, lighting, signage and cleanliness. These criteria are known to reduce the opportunity for crime, and create a safer environment for the motorist and their vehicle. Centre Manager, Kevin Smith, said: “We are very pleased to have our

car parking facilities recognised. We work very hard to ensure that the entire centre is safe and welcoming for our shoppers, and the car park is an extension of that”. Peter Gravells, B.P.A. Area Manager, said: “I am delighted that Deeping Shopping Centre has been awarded Park Mark. As part of the ongoing process required for the Safer Parking Scheme, the site will be assessed again in a year’s time by the Lincolnshire Police Assessor to ensure it continues to meet the scheme’s standards.” The short-stay car park is free to use for a maximum stay of four hours. There are then two long-stay car parks within the centre; in these, the first four hours are free and those wishing to stay longer can purchase a Pay & Display ticket for a nominal charge of £1 per day. Alternatively, a weekly seven day permit can be purchased for £4. The car park

‘Walk to Remember’ and Raise Money for Thorpe Hall Hospice A spring woodland is the setting for a new event on the calendar at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, giving people the chance to remember loved ones, while fundraising for hospice care. Walk to Remember is a 5km walk of remembrance and reflection, open to people from across the region – and early bird entry is now available. It is hoped that hundreds of people will join the walk on Sunday, May 20th, which starts in the beautiful grounds of Thorpe Hall Hospice in Longthorpe, Peterborough. It heads out to Longthorpe village, through woodland and back to the finishing line in the grounds of NGA 26

volunteers, with support from the hospice’s fundraising team.

Exhibition at Baldock’s Mill Saturday March 10th – Sunday March 18th (2.00 pm – 4.00 pm every day) Bourne Civic Society was founded in 1977 to fight for conservation and good planning in Bourne. The society runs many other activities, including lectures, tours and visits, and continues to take a great interest in our town … past, present and future. The Society manages a heritage centre and museum at Baldock’s Mill, on South Street, that features three major displays: the Raymond Mays Exhibition, the Charles Worth

Gallery and a gallery of Bourne’s history and heritage. The Mill has a shop selling a range of gifts and publications, pamphlets and maps relating to Bourne and the specialist displays. The exhibition, running for the full week during March, will show just how much has changed since the Society started over forty years ago, and how much has been done to the Mill during that time. There is no entrance fee, but donations would be most welcome for the upkeep of the Mill.

Deepings Swimming Club Strike Gold, (and more), at County Championships Deepings Swimming Club won twenty-seven medals, including eight golds, over an exceptional weekend of competition at the Lincolnshire County Championships in Grantham. Ten-year-old Alex Sadler continued his outstanding form in 2018 by winning five golds in his age group, for the 200m and 400m freestyle, 100m individual medley, 50m backstroke and 100m butterfly. Isabel Spinley (17) won two golds and collected the County Championship trophy for the overall winner in the 100m butterfly and 400m individual medley. Bethany Eagle-Brown (14) also topped the podium, taking gold in her age group for the 100m butterfly. The Deepings swimmers also won twelve silver and seven bronze medals, putting the club on track m a rch 2 0 18

for one of its most successful ever County Championships. They also achieved an impressive sixty-one “personal bests”.

Successful Past and an Impressive Future One of the principal workplaces in Bourne, with now almost five hundred people on its payroll, Johnsons Bourne Textile Services continues the success story from the last century, with its relocation in the town, massive expansion on the new Tunnel Bank site, and a service provision covering vast swathes of the United Kingdom. I recently caught up with Site Operations Director, (and one-time “Bourne Laundry storeman” on the original Manning Road site), Richard Clark.

He outlined the fascinating manner in which this family-oriented business progressed from their early servicing of local R.A.F. bases and comprehensive coverage of households in the local area, into the diversification into linenhire to hotels, now on a huge scale. He reminds me though that the local element remains, and the dry-cleaning shop for the general public on Cherry Holt Road is as busy as ever. In the 1970s, Bourne became a franchise of Brooks Textile Services, and by 1986 were delivering up to 100,000 pieces of laundry per week. There were many of us students, back in the day, eager to join on a temporary basis to deliver sheets and towels across much of the East Midlands and out to the coast. We would see how

local families, such as the Strouds, the Deweys and the Dimblebys, (not forgetting the long-standing feature that was David Johnson), were instrumental for decades in keeping “The Laundry” ahead of the field. 1992 saw the introduction of the first night shift, a sure sign that business was booming. Five years on, and the first piece of land on the Tunnel Bank site was purchased, which enabled vehicles to be loaded off-site. It was at the turn of the century though, when the building of a whole new, stateof-art factory began and, by 2013, Phase 3 had been completed, dedicated to servicing Premier Inn establishments. A year later, Bourne became Johnson’s first acquisition in the high volume linen market, which was soon to become the U.K.’s second biggest supplier of hotel linen. Besides Premier Inns, the impressive list of national firms serviced by the company include Radisson Blu, Holiday Inn, Accor and Crowne Plaza Hotels. Operating from their four acre site, and using only four giant washing machines, the Bourne factory is now capable of delivering up to 1.5 million pieces of linen per week. It’s no wonder then that you’ll be spotting the distinctive blue livery of the forty lorries out on the roads, and not just around South Lincolnshire either. An area, from Leeds to London, and from Birmingham to the east coast sees the fleet covering over 200,000 miles per month!

Regarding the future and its employment potential, Richard Clark is eager to stress that the laundry of 2018 is an exciting world, where a range of job opportunities is to be found. No longer to be perceived as just a female world of machine operatives, there are plenty of roles to be filled. These include engineers to maintain the various pieces of machinery, accounts and administration, human resources, management and a sales team to ensure that the future prospects are as bright as they possibly can be!

History

Discovering . . . the Greatford Hall fire

ne of the great country houses in the area is Greatford Hall, a large mansion to the north of West Deeping which was built during the reign of Elizabeth I and later used as the private asylum of Dr Francis Willis, who was noted for curing George III of his madness in 1788. But in 1922 the hall was burned down in a disastrous fire which broke out in the early hours and quickly spread throughout the building. The house at that time had recently been bought by Major Cuthbert Fitzwilliams, a retired officer in the Welsh Guards, who was busy carrying out improvements. His architect who was staying there discovered the fire at 4.30 am on Tuesday 5th September and a kitchen maid raised the alarm before running into the nearby village screaming “Fire!” . Pandemonium ensued and as the occupants fled, the fire brigades from Bourne and Stamford raced to the scene. But the flames spread quickly and by the time they arrived the entire building was enveloped in smoke and flames, throwing a glare into the sky which could be seen for many miles around. Water was pumped from a stream which flowed through the grounds but the firemen were powerless in preventing the destruction of the picturesque building.

Villagers who had turned out in large numbers helped save some furniture and rescue the collection of valuable paintings although they were forced to abandon many in the flames. Several of the domestic staff had narrow escapes and got out by using bed sheets tied together to lower themselves out of windows while two sisters employed as under-housemaid and cook who were trapped in their bedroom jumped almost thirty feet from the window on to the gravel drive below. Both were injured and taken to hospital. Meanwhile, Major Fitzwilliams and his wife and children who were in another part of the hall managed to escape safely by a back staircase but the flames spread so rapidly that they had no time to dress and were still wearing their night attire. An investigation failed to establish the cause of the outbreak and it was later revealed that neither the house nor the furniture were insured for their full value. Fortunately, Major Fitzwilliams decided to rebuild and Greatford Hall was subsequently restored in the straightforward vernacular style and so it remains today as one of South Lincolnshire’s grand country homes, now Grade II listed. Meltdown and Spectre - Major Flaws in PC Security

ou may have heard on the news that two major vulnerabilities have been identified that can allow criminals to steal personal data from your system, even if you are running updated Internet security suites. These two threats are called Meltdown and Spectre. Both vulnerabilities exist at the very core of today’s systems and will be difficult to address as they impact Intel, AMD and other modern processors as well as mobile devices and cloud-based solutions. What is Meltdown? Meltdown allows intrusive programs and applications to access the data being stored or used by other applications. This effectively means that a hacker can read any information being accessed by software on that device, whether this be a computer system or mobile device, such as a tablet or phone.

It impacts desktops, laptops, cloud systems, smart phones and tablets. This includes Apple systems. Can I test if my device is vulnerable? Windows users can check if their PC is vulnerable using https://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/pin/1304/ security-software/spectre-meltdown-cpu-checker

What is Spectre? Spectre poses a similar threat but can be used to ‘trick’ running software into releasing sensitive information. It is harder for criminals to exploit, but also harder to protect against.

Are the fixes for Meltdown and Spectre? All major manufacturers are working on patches for their software and hardware.

What systems are impacted? Almost EVERY modern system. Hence the reason why these vulnerabilities are getting a lot of press.

There are far too many devices impacted to provide a list here, but Microsoft have already confirmed they have released a Windows 10 update to alleviate the problem and this will be delivered as part of the Windows Update process. Apple have a Meltdown fix for iPhone in version 11.2.2 available via the standard update. What Should I do to Protect My System? As mentioned above, many manufacturers are already taking steps to address these major flaws. Ensure that you are updating your devices and, if you are in doubt, search online for information for your specific device and updates for Meltdown and Spectre. Information updates and fixes are being released, but some older systems may never see this vulnerability addressed.

f you were given a large sum of cash, perhaps £100,000, to invest, then we are certain that you would take great care in how this was invested; you would clearly understand the risk you were taking and the charges you were paying. You would probably take financial advice and would be certain about what you would be doing and why you would be doing it! If you were to take the same £100,000 and buy a property, you would understand the perils and pitfalls involved. School News Reception Children Reach for the Stars

Careers Education Programme Attains Highest Status!

On Wednesday January 24th, children in Reception at Market Deeping Community Primary School had the opportunity to look at the stars with the help of Peterborough Astronomical Society. Five volunteers from the society came to share their knowledge and some images, and allow the children to have a close-up view of the stars and the craters on the moon.

The Deepings School has been recognised for achieving excellence in their Careers, Employability and Enterprise programme and have been presented with The Quality in Careers Standard – Career Mark – Platinum Award.

The event took place after school and the children brought their parents along. First, they listened to a story written by a real astronaut and then they had hot chocolate and biscuits before braving the cold. It was a little bit cloudy but, with the help of apps on tablets and the experts on hand, the children were able to get a close-up view of the heavens. Peterborough Astronomical Society is a local group who have a passion for outer space. They came from far and wide to share their enthusiasm with the children. Mrs Jo Stoneer, class teacher, organised the event and said, “The children have been learning all about space this term and to have a real opportunity like this to see things up close was very special. We are very grateful to the people who volunteered their time to help boost the children’s learning”. Harry, aged five, said, “I could see the craters on the moon and it was really exciting. I think the aliens were hiding behind the craters. It was out of this world!”

Langtoft Primary School Langtoft Primary School celebrated their eleventh annual ‘Langtoft’s Got Talent’ on Friday February 9th. The popular event is now firmly established as a favourite in the school calendar. Children from all over the school can apply to ‘audition’ their act to the school’s judges, early on in Term 3. Rehearsals then take place for children wishing to take part in a variety of acts, such as dancing, singing, instrument playing, comedy and magic. This year, pupils as young as four years old were taking part. Mrs Leadbeater, (School Administrator/Talent Night 52

Following an external portfolio assessment and an on-site visit, the assessor met with key members of staff and groups of students throughout the day to discover more about the programme and how it supports students with decision making and careers planning. The school is the first in Lincolnshire to receive a platinum award and has held external recognition for their CEIAG programme for fifteen consecutive years, retaining their commitment to this element of their learners’ education through some challenging times. The assessor commends them for this and for the work undertaken over a number of years by the Careers & Events Manager, Linda Taylor. The platinum award has only been achieved by two other schools across the whole country. An official presentation was made by local MP, John Hayes, who congratulated the school for its hard work and achievements, and was keen to talk to the students about their career aspirations. Also part of the presentation party were John Ambrose from the awarding body, Complete Careers; Harry Norman, Managing Director from OAL, (Olympus Automation Limited), one of many local businesses that have been working closely with the school to support careers and work-related activities; Deputy Head, Ian Ladley; and two Year 11 students who were involved in the assessment interviews, Katie Hand and Sam Jacklin. Organiser), says that the night is such a special occasion for the children as it improves their self-confidence and social awareness, with the event having such a great community feel, with up to two hundred people watching on the night, and everyone supporting all the children involved. There is a special treat at the end of the evening, with staff members putting on their own show! LINCHFIELD PRIMARY SCHOOL WEMBLEY HERE WE COME - and not for football! One cold, Friday afternoon, I had the privilege to meet with three delightful members of the Mini G’s, Linchfield Primary School’s fifty-one strong Years 5/6 choir, (Daisy, Bella and Josh), and their director and Year 5 teacher, Richard Gombault. They were all very excited because, not only had they auditioned for “Britain’s Got Talent”, but something amazing had happened whilst they were there. They were rehearsing before their performance and were overheard by the director and co-founder of “Voice in a Million”, Jo Garofalo. “Voice in a Million” is a charity concert, held at Wembley Arena, which is to raise awareness of children in care around the globe. The concert involves schools from around the country learning parts to songs that they will sing at the concert on March 15th, and when the estimated five thousand children get together, what a sound that will be! Not only were the Mini G’s asked to be part of this massed choir but they will have a special role – they have been asked to perform their song as one of the two or three featured choirs. The special song they will be singing, “It’s Nobody’s Fault,” a child’s perspective on divorce, was written by Daisy and Carolyn, as part of a year group music project to write lyrics on issues that were relevant to the children. Richard will accompany them on guitar.

However, a precious and special moment for Richard Gombault was when they supported the Grimethorpe Colliery Band at a recent Rotary Club of the Deepings concert. Richard did not quite know what to expect but as he said it was; “The proudest moment I have ever had with the Mini G’s, one I shall take to my grave. It made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. . .” . . as the choir got a standing ovation from the audience and the band! So good luck and congratulations to the choir and to Richard Gombault, whose enthusiasm and hard work has rubbed off onto the choir members. Report by Hilary Bloomer.

Lengthening days, spring flowers and smiling faces. It’s a shame therefore, that I have to report on a number of complaints received recently. • Parking seems to be a perennial complaint. Please be considerate and don’t park across gateways to homes. Also, not all owners have driveways and would like to be able to park close to their house. This particularly applies to the residents of Stamford Road who live backing onto the river. There is parking in the car park near the Co-op. Four hours free parking is available in the part of the car park near to the shops, and after that a fine could be imposed if you stay longer. Four hours free parking is also available on the end by Godsey Lane; however, if you wish to stay longer there is a small charge of a £1. If you are a regular all-day user it will cost a £1 per day or £4 for the week. These conditions are in place between 6am and 6pm.There are enforcement officers who patrol regularly on the Co-op car park and on the Market Place. Cars may be parked on the Market Place for an hour between 6am and 6pm; after that there are no restrictions. The Market Place has parking for the disabled which is often used by those who have no disability and by those who block the Blue Badge drivers. Parking near the Post Office is also considered to be a nightmare. Please be aware of those who need to be able to go to the Post Office without having to walk too far. • The Council have received complaints about dog fouling on the footpaths. It is an offence, and owners should pick up the dog mess. The ‘poo bags’ can be placed in your domestic black bin, although the Town Council does have special bins around the town.

elcome to St Michael’s Church, which has served the village for over 700 years. It is part of the Ness Group of churches, with St John the Baptist, Baston, and St Firmin, Thurlby. Last July, following the retirement of the previous incumbent, we welcomed Reverend Carolyn Bailey as our new Rector.

Our church services are usually at 10 o’clock. The first Sunday of the month is Morning Praise, and the fourth Sunday our Family Service, with craft activities for the children. On other Sundays, there is a service of Holy Communion, either in Langtoft, or as a group service in Baston or Thurlby. Each Thursday morning, a short service of Holy Communion is held in one of the churches in the group.

Our church also supports several charities, including Action Aid and The Children’s Society. Half the money raised at the Lent Lunches is given to Christian Aid. One of our popular social activities is the Gentlemen’s Breakfast Club. It meets at the pub opposite the church, where members enjoy a hearty breakfast and can listen to speakers on a wide range of subjects.

The Ness Group choir sings at most of our group services, and we are also fortunate to have a band of enthusiastic bell ringers. On Sunday May 13th at 6.30 pm, we are starting a new, café-style service called ‘OMG’ (Oh My God), with songs, prayer and praise, led by our worship group, ‘Rock of Ages’, who also provides the music for our Morning Praise service. Every Saturday, from 10 o’clock to 12 noon, we have ‘open church’, when coffee and tea are available. People can meet their friends, look round the church, or bring flowers in memory of a loved one, to place in our memorial window. On the first Saturday of each month, we sell cakes, bric-a-brac and other items. Maintaining our ancient church is very expensive, so there are other fundraising events during the year, the main ones being the Christmas Tree Festival and Summer Fair.

Puppets Plus is a church-based activity which uses puppets and music to tell bible stories in a new and exciting way. Our annual Easter egg trails and Christmas travelling nativity also aim to take the Christian message out of the Sunday morning service and into the local community. Rabbits as Pets

abbits have traditionally been childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pets but, as many people have discovered, they are often better suited as adult pets. They are very inquisitive animals and much more intelligent than most people realise. It is now being understood that it is not enough for a rabbit to be kept in small solitary situations. They need a windproof and waterproof area of shelter, with an outdoor space as large as possible, that has plenty of interesting things in it. Some people allow their rabbits to roam the whole garden, but this can have problems if cats hunt them. Also, care must be taken with possible poisonous plants. Some rabbits are kept in the house and can easily be toilet-trained. Great care

needs to be taken though with electrical wires, as rabbits love to chew them. If kept indoors, they still need plenty of outside sunlight to ensure adequate vitamin D levels. Correct feeding is vital for a rabbitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s health. Poor diets and limited access to sunlight can result in loose teeth and abscesses, digestive problems, poor coat and obesity. Rabbits have teeth and a digestive tract very similar to horses. Their caecum, (equivalent to our appendix), is large and full of bacteria that digest their plant diet, and they have to eat almost constantly to maintain proper digestion; this food needs to be mainly grass and hay, (ideally a variety of different grasses and other plants). Limited amounts of rabbit mix and vegetables can be given, but great care must be taken to not over-feed these. Too much grain will result in obesity. It is also very important to vaccinate rabbits, as there are two diseases that we see regularly, myxomatosis and V.H.D. (viral haemorrhagic disease). Myxomatosis causes the swollen eyes that are commonly seen in wild rabbits, and causes severe pneumonia that usually results in death after two weeks. This disease is spread via rabbit fleas and possibly some of the newer continental midges. V.H.D. causes a rapid death and often the rabbit is just found dead, although occasionally it may live for a couple of days. There is an effective combined vaccination against both these diseases. Lastly, it is very important that a rabbit is given plenty of attention; they are very intelligent and need a lot of interaction, and ideally they should be kept in pairs. Males in particular will need neutering; two entire males kept together will often fight, which neutering will usually stop. The male rabbit will also need neutering if kept with a female, as they do tend to breed like â&#x20AC;Ś!
