Welcome to Your April Issue. Now that the weather is finally taking a turn for the better, I am so looking forward to enjoying the springtime. However, it is lovely to see that so many of you, adults and children alike, made the effort to really enjoy the snow while it was here. We have captured some fabulous pictures of families and friends frolicking in the white landscapes. What a way to say “farewell” to winter. April Fools’ Day is just around the corner and I’m eager to find out what pranks people are pulling this year. For anyone who knows me personally, be kind please! Even though this day falls on the same day as Easter Sunday, I’m still expecting an Easter egg regardless! The Easter Egg Hunt will definitely be one of many ways to enjoy time with your families on this special weekend. Enjoy the read!

After having grown up in Deeping, our cosy little village is very close to my heart so I am delighted to join the Discovering team. My admiration for the local people became even more prominent during the recent unwelcome visit from the ‘Beast from the East’. I was amazed and in awe of the vast number of people who gave up their time, and even belongings, to help those in need. This makes me feel safe, secure and sure in the knowledge that we are a community that can lean on each other. In the spirit of community, this issue gives details for some fantastic forthcoming events in our local area; the Exotic Pet Refuge Open Day, Deeping Tennis Club Open Day and our Easter Egg Hunt, to name a few. Eat the Season

Asparagus Wrapped in Bacon You could use bacon or pancetta in this impressive little side dish. You could also do the assembly ahead of time and then roast just before serving. Asparagus is at its peak in April so enjoy!

Method 1 2 3

Preheat the oven to 200°C /Gas Mark 6. Toss the asparagus in the olive oil so that all spears are well coated. Divide the asparagus into four equal bunches. Wrap each bunch in a bacon rasher, securing with a wooden skewer if necessary. Place on a roasting tray and season with salt and pepper. Roast for 10 to 15 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the bacon is crisp and the asparagus is tender.

The Five Bells at Edenham Relax with Fine Food and Drink after that Long Walk! Leaving the winter behind, thoughts for many of us now turn to getting out into the countryside for that long walk or cycle ride and, as summer arrives, that opportunity to sit out on a sunny day in a pub garden and make the most of our (occasionally!) fabulous summer weather. That is where The Five Bells public house and restaurant in Edenham really comes into its own, providing the perfect stopping-off point after a ramble, or perhaps a cycle ride, in the beautiful countryside to the west of Bourne, and a substantial beer garden in which you can enjoy the fine food and drinks on offer in a delightful location. The Five Bells offers food for all tastes, from a lunch menu for light bites during the day, through to the full restaurant menu serving beautifully presented, traditional cuisine, to be enjoyed in the bar or in the separate restaurant area within the pub. With two open log fires, the main bar provides the perfect place to share a drink with

the use of fresh local produce. Meats are supplied by Alec Day of Bourne and The Peterborough Game Company, whilst the fish arrives fresh, courtesy of M & J Seafood of Grimsby. The meals are executed to an exceptionally high standard and the array of very favourable comments on Trip Advisor speaks volumes. The discerning drinker will be pleased to encounter a broad selection of draught lagers, ciders and real ales, with variety very much in evidence. Horncastle Brewery and Greene King ales sit alongside Krombacher and Brava Czech lagers, for example, whilst the wines available are supplied by Amps of Oundle, in itself almost a guarantee of quality and consistency. The Five Bells offers an intimate dining experience, especially in the evenings, making it perfect for a treat or for that special occasion. There is also a function room with a capacity of eighty guests, making this beautifully maintained and tastefully decorated country pub an even more attractive proposition for special events and celebrations.

Sleep your Way to the Skin of your Dreams by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness

lack of sleep can have a major impact on mood, weight control, concentration, memory and our health and wellbeing. A good night’s sleep is not just vital for our body and mind – it is necessary for keeping our skin in tip-top condition too. Night time is when your skin cells are at their most productive, meaning they are repairing any damage done throughout the day. Here are Claire’s five top tips for a good night’s sleep.

Have a regular sleep pattern Try to go to bed at around the same time every evening and get up at around the same time every morning.

Avoid “Blue Light” Watching television, or scrolling phones and Ipads stimulates a chemical in the brain that will make it very difficult to sleep. Turn your electronic gadgets and the television off an hour before bed, have a bath, make a plan of action for the next day, or do some relaxation techniques that work for you. If you are struggling to sleep, read a book (not a kindle), the left to right action of the eyes has a hypnotic effect.

Check your diet Alcohol may help you get off to sleep, but it will disrupt you early in the morning. High sugar foods can hinder you

getting to sleep or cause you to be wide awake in the early hours. Caffeine and nicotine are stimulants that will also keep you awake. These should all be avoided if you have trouble sleeping. Magnesium stimulates hormones in the body that help regulate sleep, relieve anxiety and calm the nervous system. You find magnesium through drinking water and eating green vegetables, nuts, meat, fish and fruit. Try taking a supplement of 200 – 300 mg per day and see if it makes a difference

Cleanse your room The ideal temperature for sleep is considered to be around 17 degrees. Make sure you open your window for a few minutes every day (even in the depths of winter). This will cleanse your room and remove toxins in the air that will hinder your relaxation.

What are Corns and Calluses?

orns and calluses are areas of hard, thickened skin which most commonly develop on the feet. This can cause pain and discomfort when you walk. Corns are small circles of thick skin that usually develop on the tops and sides of toes or on the sole of the foot. Calluses, however, are hard, rough areas of skin that are often yellowish in colour; they are larger than corns and don’t have such a well-defined edge.

As callused skin is thick, it’s often less sensitive to touch than the surrounding skin. What causes it? The major cause of calluses and corns is excessive pressure from movement that can cause a response from the skin to produce callosities, which are thickened hardened parts of skin; these can form into either a corn or a callus. It can also appear if you are wearing ill-fitting footwear or if you are involved with high levels of activity; running, sports etc. This again is due to the pressure produced in both circumstances.

What will happen if I leave it untreated? If you leave the corns on your feet without seeking any treatment, professional or otherwise, then they won’t get better until the cause of the pressure is removed. If this cause isn’t removed, the skin could become thicker and more painful over time. The same is also true for calluses; if the hardened skin is left untreated it will continue to build up and become even more painful. What can help? To help ease or prevent the formation of corns and calluses, you can just do small things that can be a big help. For example you should dry your feet thoroughly after washing them and apply a suitable foot cream. We also recommend that you use a pumice stone or foot file regularly to gently remove any hard skin; this will then stop the build-up and creation of calluses. As always, make sure you wear comfortable footwear that fits properly, as pressure is one of the main causes of formation, and this will go a long way to reducing or preventing development. If possible, avoid wearing heels, as they will increase the pressure on the front of your feet.

What are the treatment options? Corns and calluses can be very successfully treated by the skilled hand of a podiatrist. They can use a scalpel to painlessly remove them. The aim is to prevent the structures reforming whenever possible, and this can often be achieved by changing footwear or redistributing pressure. Does it matter who cares? Who are you living your life for?

However, it seems that modern society exists in the context of an imaginary and toxic framework called ‘social media’. It is, in my opinion, ruining the world; and ruining people.

Who or what are you really accountable to? And how do you distance yourself from the ‘noise’?

speak here as a thirty-seven year old man who has just found out that my beautiful partner and I are expecting a baby. At first it brings massive emotion. Then it brings clarity; perspective. It reminds me of the importance of mature adult living. Adult living in the way it existed when I was being brought up by my parents; pragmatism, manners, respect,

What do you do when you get up in the morning? What is your first thought? Does it pertain directly to your life at that very moment? Does it ask, “How is the weather?” or “What can I personally achieve today?” Or are you compelled through habit, or even addiction, to reach for your phone to see what the wider world is talking about, sometimes even before you wish a proper “good morning” to your family? Do you look through your phone before you look through your window? What is the overriding feeling while you are mindlessly scrolling through a stream of ‘non-news’? There is probably a part of you that feels the need to share, respond or react? Does any of it matter? What else could you be doing with your time? And, more importantly, what else could you be doing with your mind? To me, the order of things has taken a turn for the worse. Things are now out of order. There is now much less privacy of thought and personal, personable interaction. We need to be able to rely on confidences, trust and safe conversations. There are no influences effectively challenging the runaway train that is social media. And, if someone does dare stand in the way of the social media train, they are run over, discarded and ridiculed by a heckling, laughing mob who all revel in each other’s apparent ‘strength’ in anonymous, faceless, consequence-free gangs; mobs. Social media is fine while life is good; when sharing good news and while life

Health is in joyful harmony. Indeed it can be used for wonderful, charitable, loving and kind reasons. When this happens, it is a powerful and influential force for positive change.

accountable to everything we do and say.

But for those people who aren’t having such a ‘good time’, social media can manifest as a heavy grey cloud, from which detrimental and negative thoughts can be rained upon a person or persons at any given time, often without their knowledge. This then perpetuates a state of constant insecurity, distraction and stress.

To appear bold and confident and sure of all of our endeavours is, I guess, a skill I have stumbled upon. But as someone who helps to run a business, I suffer the same stress as any individual might through the influence of social media.

But personally, I feel it’s time for me to be honest. It is terrifying.

People now, whether they recognise it or not, are mentally gripped and entangled in social media to the point at which they are beginning to make choices according to its potential consequences and what people might say. It is important that all of us look to our family and friends to ensure we are ready to see the signs of someone who is being oppressed by such feelings. We should also look to our friends and family to share our feelings if we feel this way personally, before it becomes ‘internalised’. Why is this relevant to Empire Gym? It is relevant in almost every way imaginable. Our business, our vocation, our passion and our belief is in making people feel better, initially physically, but ultimately, mentally.

Every decision made is scrutinised. Every personal choice celebrated or vilified. We are walking on a field of eggshells, always wanting to avoid an avalanche of ill feeling through an apparently ‘incorrect’ idea or decision. But it is our responsibility as a business, as it is everyone’s responsibility, to do what we feel is right; for us, for our customers and for decency. We must continue to have personal, positive, private, constructive and pleasant conversations and live life as it happens in our own way. We must trust that the gaze of our conscience is more important than the gaze of the masses. We must always build real and lasting relationships with people who are genuine and who care.

People actively do positive things together in the same environment where conversation is encouraged. Couple this with the fact that everyone in the building has something in common; they are there, exercising, moving and being alive!

This is why gyms are great places. We move our bodies and free our minds. Many of the most positive posts you will see on social media come from people who have literally just stepped out of the gym feeling ‘high’ and happy.

Add music, colour, professional support and the making and reinforcing of lasting friendships. The positive chemical changes in the brain begin to happen. Serotonin levels rise, as do endorphins. Real life begins to win the race. You are feeling positive.

Whatever your personal considered choices in life, providing they cause no harm, you have no obligation to justify them to anyone because…

OK, there are positives to social media. It gives us a platform from which to advertise our business and to try to bring our own positive influence and outlook to the world. We’ve also raised a significant amount of money through charitable events which have been advertised via social media. Then there is the benefit to the customer. We are immediately

Deeping Tennis Club

eeping Tennis Club is a family-friendly club, welcoming players of all ages and abilities. Facilities include three floodlit hard courts, (plus the use of two other courts in Langtoft), as well as a modern clubhouse, which incorporates a licensed bar, function room, tennis shop and changing rooms.

Considering it is a club in a small market town, they definitely “punch above their weight” amongst the other clubs in Lincolnshire. Social tennis takes place on Tuesday mornings, Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons, and they have many competitive teams in the local district leagues for all adults and juniors. The beauty of Iceland’s tourism is that it is accessible and enjoyable all year round. Despite the lack of opportunity to get a sun tan, (with temperatures hovering around freezing point in the winter and 12°C in summer), the “land of fire and ice” is more an attraction for the eyes, not the skin. Jaw-dropping vistas, incredible natural attractions and bucket-list destinations are all part of what makes this country so special. The only problem is trying to narrow down your choices to fit the time you have there – so here are some Icelandic highlights that you can enjoy:

Exploring Reykjavík The world’s northernmost capital, and Iceland’s only city, might not have the allure of other big-ticket attractions, but there is plenty to see and do. In addition to being the cultural and arts hub of a nation, Reykjavík offers visitors plenty in the way of activities and events year-round. Whether it’s swimming, museums, high street shopping or simply taking in the mountainous surroundings which provide the stunning backdrop to city life, there’s something for everyone in Reykjavík. Blue Lagoon Another hotspot, quite literally, is the Blue Lagoon. Why learn an instrument? on more areas of your life than you’d imagine. It can be a lot more than just a way to pass the time!

To certain people, music comes naturally. For others, it’s like an alien language. It’s difficult to find the way to start understanding it, but like every skill, it just takes the right approach to get over that first hurdle. But why put the time in to get past that initial frustrating, confusing first step? Well, there are many benefits to learning an instrument that some people may not realise. Firstly, if you’ve never played any instruments before, it’s a lot of fun and a wonderful hobby to use your time creatively. Secondly, it’s a great way to express yourself. If you have something to say, be it personal, political, or even educational, you can communicate your thoughts through writing and performing music. It’s also a brilliant way to meet people and form close relationships. When you play music with others, you’re relying heavily on understanding each other to make sure the music sounds good and, as a result, you’ll begin to find your communication skills grow, helping with any social anxieties you may have. As well as all of this, it can help with cognitive functions, such as memory, language and some studies have even shown it to assist with recovering from brain injuries! This is for adults and children alike, and getting your child to start learning an instrument at a young age can make a huge difference to their ability to learn and help develop their brain. We’re not claiming that, after one lesson, you’ll be able to join Mensa, or selling out the Albert Hall, but regardless of one’s ability, learning an instrument can have a huge positive impact

Isabel Spinley – Two County Records at British Championships Isabel Spinley was in exceptional form at the 2018 British Swimming Championships in Edinburgh in March, making two ‘B’ finals against the country’s top swimmers and smashing two Lincolnshire long course county records. The 17-year-old represented Deepings Swimming Club in four events at the championships, 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly, and 400m individual medley. In the 100m, she finished third in the ‘B’ Final in a new age-group Lincolnshire long course county record, while in the 200m ‘B’ Final she went one better, touching in second place and setting yet another county record. She also broke the age-group county record in the 50m heats.

Isabel now holds the Lincolnshire county records for 100m and 200m butterfly at the 15, 16 and 17 year-old age groups and for 50m butterfly at 16 and 17 years old. Deepings Swimming Club’s Bailie Harrison also qualified for the 50m butterfly at the British Championships but, unfortunately, the weather disruption caused by the ‘Beast from the East’ meant that she was unable to travel to Edinburgh to compete. Lynn Chapman, Deepings Swimming Club Head Coach, said: “Once again, Isabel produced some of her best racing. She is a great role model for the other swimmers at our club. We’re all disappointed

Thrill-seekers Coming to Conquer Peterborough Cathedral in May Nerves of steel will be required on Friday May 18th and Saturday May 19th, as risk-takers take part in a 150-foot abseil down the front of Peterborough Cathedral. The event is being held to raise money for both the cathedral and the Peterborough-based charity, ‘Shine’, which provides specialist support for people affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus – complex conditions affecting movement, learning and health. The abseil itself will not be for the faint-hearted. Having ascended the ancient spiral staircase within the great North West Tower and taken in breathtaking views across the city, participants will 20

clip in and descend the 150-foot vertical drop, cheered on by friends, family and colleagues below. Derby Mountain Rescue will be on hand to safely guide the proceedings. Anyone seeking to take part in this exciting challenge can book directly via www.cathedralabseil. com. Registration will cost £50, (plus a booking fee), and entrants are encouraged to raise a minimum of £250 to support the two worthy causes – prizes will be awarded to the top fundraisers. The popular Moonlight Walk, hosted by St Barnabas Hospice, is back for 2018 with brand new locations, one in Lincoln and one in Stamford. On Saturday June 9th, the Moonlight Walk will take place at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln, and on Saturday September 8th, there will be a second Moonlight Walk at Borderville Sports Centre, Stamford. Now in its eleventh year, the Moonlight Walk is over a 10 km course and will be open to all residents of Lincolnshire. This year, St Barnabas is aiming to get 2,000 people, walking shoulder to shoulder for hospice care, with the support of BG Conference & Events. Amelia Mochan, Event Fundraiser for St Barnabas, said: “Although the Moonlight Walk used to be ‘ladies only’, this year St Barnabas is encouraging the public to grab the girls AND bring the blokes to what promises to be the biggest and best Moonlight Walk to date. The Potting Shed As temperatures rise, (we hope), and days lengthen, there is plenty to do on the allotment or vegetable patch: sowing, weeding and planting. However, beware as there is always a threat of night frosts and it is better to be cautious than to take a risk, as precious time will be wasted: don’t forget to cover early sowings with fleece or cloches if frosts are forecast. Now is an ideal time to prepare seed beds; so that seeds have a good chance of germinating, the soil should be broken down into small even sized particles and stones and other debris removed. Rake over the soil when it is fairly dry to level it, so that dips and hollows are smoothed out to create a flat surface that will drain more evenly. Create a fine tilth by dragging the rake back and forth, forwards at a shallow angle and backwards at 90 degrees to create the small even particles. If you forgot to manure in the autumn, you can still add really well-rotted manure or compost, but dig it in thoroughly. When they have developed two or more true leaves, young seedlings that were planted in trays or modules need “pricking out” and putting into individual pots or larger modules. Lift them out carefully and always handle them by their leaves, not the stem. Keep an eye on them once they are in pots because, if it is too early to plant them out, they may become pot-bound – re-plant them in larger pots. Also, plants that have been raised indoors should be acclimatised by putting them outside during warmer days and bringing them in at night. Jobs to do this month include:• Earth-up early potatoes.

• Plant second early and main crop potatoes. • Last chance to plant onion sets. • The majority of root crops can be sown now and it is probably your last chance to sow parsnips. • Sow sweetcorn - an interesting way of germinating sweetcorn is by pre-chitting: - lay the seeds on a layer of damp kitchen paper then place a layer of paper over in an airtight box. Check daily and when a small white sprout appears, plant the seed about half to an inch deep in potting compost. • Plant asparagus crowns by the end of the month. • Sow the following outdoors but under cover; beetroot (if the soil is cold and wet), cucumbers, lettuces, turnips, oriental leaves and salad leaves. • Don’t forget to regularly hand weed or hoe around seedlings as the weeds appear, as they create a lot of competition for food and moisture. • Make sure that fruit trees, canes and bushes are kept watered, as any fruit planted in the last 18 months is susceptible to drought damage. Adding mulch around the base will help. • Sow maincrop peas and make the last sowing of summer broad beans. • Put up pea sticks and build cane supports ready for climbing beans while the ground is still soft. Birds of the Fens by Lydia Pinfold

he Deepings is a haven for different, and beautiful, species of wildlife. More often than not, I find myself photographing birds more than any other animal. More common than you may think are birds of prey that I often find lining the fields, searching for a potential meal. The red kite has had a huge leap in numbers since their reintroduction to the UK over thirty years ago, and there are now an estimated two thousand pairs across the UK. I have seen this change in population numbers myself, as I see vast quantities of red kite when travelling to and from work. They can be identified by their distinctive markings, vibrant earthy colours and their noticeably curved tail, gliding high above farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; fields in search of food all throughout the day. Another bird of prey which, despite its late night and early morning hunting hours, and which I had the absolute joy of photographing for the first time last year, is the delightful barn owl. If it is not the pure white colour of its chest that catches your eye, then it is the ghostly form it takes when gliding over roads and river banks that make them such a pleasure to photograph. It was also at the same location, and same time of year, that I saw my first ever short eared owl, so there is always something new to see in the Deepings and surrounding areas.

The Nene and Welland Oddfellows Branch to Host a Tea Dance! The Nene and Welland Branch of the Oddfellows, which is currently based in Market Deeping, was established in the 1940s. It is celebrating its past and looking to its future as it looks to extol the virtues of friendship. The Society, which anyone can join, has a long history of making friends and helping people, with a focus on social activities and fundraising, as well as offering its members a range of exclusive financial and care support. So, the milder spring weather is finally making an appearance, the nights are pulling out, and your outdoor space could do with a little TLC. Maybe laying some turf, cutting back the hedges or repairing weather-damaged fences? Perhaps a complete overhaul or shiny new, blockpaved driveway or patio? Whatever the job – big or small – don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’. Remember: • Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment. • Don’t take their word for it when they tell you urgent work or repairs need doing. • Do ask them to qualify who they are and to leave you a contact number. • Never hand over any cash as a deposit for work which they say they will return to carry out. • Feel free to ask to see their credentials and /or examples of their work. • Always ask them politely to leave if you feel uncomfortable with their approach. However, there are a few simple rules which could give away tell-tale signs of a rogue trader. • Do they have a land line number? • Do they have professional work wear? 10:05 • Do they have a sign-written vehicle? • Are they a limited company? • Do they have a UK address? • Do they accept credit cards? • Are they offering reduced price for cash or having one- time ‘special offers’? • Are they trying to pushing you into a quick decision? The door-knocking scams of cowboy landscapers and other outdoor trades are becoming more and more common. Normally the process starts when a workman knocks on the door and points out a problem with your existing driveway. He will then tell you that he’s in the neighbourhood working on other customers’ driveways and has some left-over materials that means he could do your driveway for you at a reduced price. Once they have you agreed to a deal, the next step is to ask for cash up front to ‘ensure you’ll pay’. Never pay anyone cash at the door, especially when they haven’t even conducted any work on your premises. Most driveway scammers of this type won’t even have conducted a full inspection of your property and therefore probably have no genuine idea as to the exact costs involved or the length of time it’ll take. The only way to protect yourself from driveway and patio scams is to always ensure you use a reputable tradesman, like the members of Safe Local Trades. April Fools’ Day

- What’s That All About Then? Sometimes called “All Fools’ Day”, April 1st is one of the most light-hearted days of the year. Its origins are uncertain. Whilst some people see it as a celebration related to the turn of the seasons, (closely following the vernal equinox), others believe it stems from the adoption of the new (Gregorian) calendar, over five hundred years ago. The “New Year” was to become January 1st and many people either refused to accept the new date, or did not learn about it, and so continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1st. Other people began to make fun of these traditionalists, sending them on “fool’s errands” or trying to trick them into believing something false. Eventually, the practice spread throughout Europe. April Fools’ Day is observed throughout the Western world. Practices include sending someone on a “fool’s errand,” looking for things that don’t exist; playing pranks; and trying to get people to believe ridiculous things. Famous pranks include the following: Sweden Covers their TVs in Tights - In 1962, Sweden’s only television channel announced that the station could be viewed in colour, if viewers were to cut up a pair of tights and place them a p ri l 2 0 1 8

over the screen, which would bend the television’s light to make it appear in colour. Thousands of gullible Swedes fell into the expensive trap, only to realize they were victims of a hoax. It was not until 1970, that colour televisions were to replace the traditional black and white programmes. The Earth Loses Gravity - In 1976, BBC Radio 2 reported that, due to rare astronomical alignment of Pluto behind Jupiter, the Earth’s gravity would decrease. Listeners were told to jump in the air at 9:47 a.m. to take advantage of this, which would result in a floating feeling. Many reported that they had felt this floating sensation, one listener even stating that she and her friends lifted from their chairs to float around the room together. Home Grown Spaghetti Trees - One of the most famous April Fools’ pranks occurred in 1957, when the BBC news programme “Panorama” reported on Switzerland’s spaghetti harvest. The region’s mild winter and lack of natural spaghetti pests allowed for the fruitful production of home-grown spaghetti. The BBC received many calls from people interested in growing their own spaghetti and were told that they should place a sprig of spaghetti in tomato sauce!

History

Discovering . . . West Deeping church Rex Needle

he spire and pinnacled tower of the village church date from 1370 and still dominate the skyline as you enter West Deeping, one of the smallest and most picturesque villages in South Lincolnshire. The building is Early English in style with three-bay arcades of rounded piers dating mainly from the 13th and 14th centuries, the tower, now housing a peal of six bells, the oldest from 1673, which have been well used over the centuries, several notable campanological achievements being recorded on the surrounding walls. The nave dates from the 13th century but was extended and the clerestory added 200 years later when the aisles were rebuilt while the font dates from the reign of Edward III (1327-77) , having an octagonal top with eight crests commemorating local nobility of the period, five of them with proven lineage although the others remain unknown. Further evidence of loyal support for the church can be seen in the initials of churchwardens who served here in past times which are carved into the beams, a memorial to their devotion in parochial office. The chancel dates from the 14th century, the ceiling is decorated with gold leaf symbols and the stained glass windows depict various saints including St Andrew to whom the church is dedicated, the Galilean fisherman

who reputedly travelled to preach Christianity in Greece where he was martyred at Patras in 60AD. An outstanding feature may be found in the centre aisle, a large and magnificent brass two tier chandelier of twenty-four lights installed at Lammas in 1770 at a cost of twenty guineas, Lammas being a festival to mark the annual wheat harvest, and bearing an inscription which records philanthropy inspired by the bountiful crops of past centuries. Outside, the graveyard also contains much of interest for the curious, notably an epitaph on one of the stone memorials which is inscribed: “Sacred to the memory of Edward, the son of Robert and Susan Wright, who lost his life in a fire at West Deeping Mill, May 16th 1856”. St Andrew’s remains open every day of the year and echoes the story of a village and its people over the past 750 years, surviving through the care and generosity of succeeding generations. It also attracted the interest of the noted art historian, Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, who visited this church while compiling his massive opus on the historic buildings of England (1964), when he found it to be at the heart of a village which he thought was “uncommonly charming”.

Do I need Lasting Powers of Attorney? by Nick Ash, Managing Director

Once again this is one of our most frequently asked questions. Many people assume that because they are married or have close family members, they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA). But most people do. Answer our simple questions below to find out if you need to put LPA in place. Do you have any assets in your own name? Even if you are married, nobody has the right to access assets held in a sole name. A Lasting Power of Attorney for Property and Financial Affairs will give your loved ones the right to access and manage your accounts. Do you have family members who would look after you if you became ill? You have probably experienced the problems that arise when you need to talk to a doctor on behalf of a family member; passing the telephone to a sick relative so they can give authority or patient confidentiality stopping a physician from discussing a case with you. If you want your family to be able to discuss your treatment and issues, then you need a Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Welfare. Do you own property jointly with a spouse or civil partner? If you are incapacitated, your spouse will not be able to sell your property without a Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney. One owner cannot act for both parties to a sale, so your LPA will need to appoint a third party, normally one of your children, as well as your spouse.

Are you worried about losing control of your assets? Your Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney will ensure that your family or loved ones are in control of your assets and your financial affairs. Without it they will need to apply to the courts to get control. Do you want to avoid your local authority controlling your affairs? Prior to the 2014 Care Act, local authorities had a duty to consult with families before taking care decisions. That duty is now gone. This means that a Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Welfare is the only way that your family can be certain that they will be in control of care decisions. Do you have a pre-October 2007 Enduring Power of Attorney? It is probably time for a review. Lasting Powers of Attorney have a far wider scope than enduring powers. They offer more protection to the donor and they are the only documents that allow someone else to make Health and Welfare decisions. An enduring power only deals with financial and property matters. Remember that the law requires your attorneys to act in your interests at all times, and they can only make decisions on your behalf if you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make them for yourself. Free fun for the family at the Deeping Shopping Centre this Easter The Deeping Shopping Centre will be holding its an Easter Fun Day on Saturday 31st March, with lots of entertainment planned, all for fun. How to Spot Spam and Malicious e-Mails

To all intents and purposes, this looks like a regular billing e-mail from BT, albeit with an inflated figure (£336.76), designed to ‘alarm’ you into clicking on the billing link.

covered this subject just over a year ago, but it is worth reiterating given the fact that the scammers have upped their game, and the quality and appearance of these malicious emails has leapt up recently.

But let’s pause and have a closer look. If you put the cursor on the text See your bill here, you should see a web address shown on screen. (How this is shown will vary by the type of method you use to view your e-mail)… This link doesn’t take you to BT but to an unknown server in Slovakia (indicated by the .sk in the zbalsikufor.sk part of the address). Therefore, by clicking on this link, you will be connecting your device direct to that server where the criminals will take advantage of this to carry out any malicious action they intend. What makes this one even more convincing is that the other links in the e-mail will take you to BT pages. All four of the general links are to publicly accessible BT information pages, lending further credence to this being a genuine e-mail. So, what happens if I click on that rogue link? Various things can occur if you do click on that Slovakian link, the most common being the accessing of your system for the benefit of identity fraud, although often it will be to load code onto your system to further exploit security issues or spread viruses and malware. This is why it is important to invest in a professional security suite, like Norton, where any such attempt may be blocked by the security software, even if you do accidentally connect to the criminals’ server.

I don’t normally single out e-mail scams, but I will use this recent malicious e-mail to show how the quality of the scams has improved.

March certainly came in like a lion. However, the spring flowers are out and hopefully we’ll be able to enjoy some warm weather and March will go out like a lamb. It has been a pleasure to see the snowdrops and crocus in Welland Gardens, also the snowdrops in the old churchyard near St Guthlac’s Church. I hope you were able to keep warm and safe when the ‘Beast came in from the East’. By this time, the Council will have set its budget for the next financial year and residents will know what their Council Tax will be. Market Deeping Parish Council have been able to keep its share of the Council Tax spending as low as possible. The rising cost of maintaining the play equipment and the BMX track, the cemetery and the parks are ongoing commitments, and this year the Council is also having to be responsible for some amenity grass cutting, a responsibility which has been transferred from the District Council, but the Council feels it is able to keep

costs down without lowering its duty of care. In the near future, some of our well-loved trees will have to be severely pruned or removed on the advice of the tree inspector. Markets have been in the local media news recently but no decisions have been made. The closing of the Co-op in the New River Shopping Precinct has caused great consternation; it remains to be seen what happens when the new tenant settles in. In the ensuing weeks the New Local Plan will be revealed by SKDC. The Council hopes you will take a look and forward your views; it’s the town’s future. With all good wishes for Easter. Best wishes

or some years now, the Child Benefit tax charge for higher earners has had an impact on families, and the implications of this charge aren’t always immediately obvious!

Child Benefit can be claimed for all children under the age of 16. The current benefit is £20.70 per week for the first child and £13.70 for each additional child. So, for two children, this is currently £1,788 per annum.

The tax charge: Where a parent has not requested that HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) stop paying Child Benefit, a tax charge will be levied on the household’s highest earner, if their personal taxable income exceeds £50,000 per tax year. It is interesting to note that, if both you and your partner have an income just below the £50,000 limit, you’ll still continue to receive the full amount of Child Benefit. How is the extra tax calculated? If you have an income of between £50,000 and £60,000 a year, the amount of extra tax you’ll have to pay will be 1% of the amount of Child Benefit you get for every £100 of your income above £50,000. So this would mean that, should your income be £55,000, this would lead to a 50% reduction in Child Benefit - £894 if you have two children. So what can be done? Well, one possible solution to this could be to make an additional pension contribution. If you follow the above example of someone who earned £55,000, then that individual could make a £5,000 pension contribution. This individual is a higher rate tax payer and so can claim effective tax relief on the payment of £2,000 – the net cost is therefore £3,000. The pension contribution of £5,000 also reduces the net income to £50,000 and so 100% of the Child Benefit will be retained- £894 in the above example. If you follow the example through, a £5,000 pension contribution would receive £2,000 tax relief and £894 returned by way of Child Benefit, and so the true cost of the £5,000 contribution would be £2,104!!! There are other ways of doing it, including charity contributions. Whatever your circumstances, we believe that advice is essential. School News Headstart Nursery, Market Deeping

Linchfield Community Primary School Linchfield has gone safety mad! A whole week has been spent exploring and learning about important issues such as fire safety, road safety, and how to stay safe online (all our Instagram accounts are now on the Ghost setting, so we’re not giving away our locations!) The children have engaged in a variety of exciting and informative workshops from Police Community Support Officers, the NSPCC, as well as the Fire Service, who came into school in their fire engine! “It’s so important that children know how to keep themselves safe, and it’s been great to get that message across to them in a fun and engaging way. The children have really enjoyed learning about all the different ways in which they can keep themselves safe in the modern world”, commented a school spokesperson.

At Headstart Nursery, Market Deeping, we are continually developing new ideas to assist in our children’s learning and development. Since the introduction of our own Forest School learning facilities, the children have had amazing opportunities to explore and learn outdoors, doing woodwork and cooking over an open fire. We also offer extra-curricular clubs such as craft, dance, Spanish lessons and sewing, which give the children a diverse range of opportunities to learn and develop new skills above the daily activities in which they participate. Our parents and families are very happy and supportive of the extra opportunities that we provide for their children, and feel that these have enhanced their children’s development. We are particularly proud of our new Pre-School uniform that promotes our inclusive environment. This is endorsed by our parents who have said that they have seen a positive change in their children’s behaviour and attitude when coming to Nursery. We have celebrated many events and festivals so far, including Burns Night and Chinese New Year. This term, as well as celebrating World Book Day with dressing-up and reading our favourite books, we will be supporting Sports Relief with a fun day full of “sporty” activities, and to celebrate Easter, we have an Easter bonnet parade and an Easter basket competition! Princesses, Knights and Dragons Treat Day at William Hildyard – February 2018 The Reception and Nursery children at William Hildyard celebrated all of their hard work at the end of last term by being rewarded with a special treat day, linked to all of their learning about princesses, knights and dragons. The children chose to dress up as one of the characters for the day and enjoyed an array of exciting activities. Throughout the treat day, they were able to choose from a variety of creative tasks; they even made their own healthy pizzas to have at a royal picnic later in the afternoon. 52

School News Baston CE Primary School Due to the snow days in early March, we had to re-schedule our “World Book Day” in order for the whole school to still go ahead with planned activities to celebrate reading. As a school, we all looked at the book, ‘Into the Forest’, by Anthony Browne. We used music, art, drama, poetry and prose to help us to understand the book in detail in each individual year group. Our children dressed up as a character from one of their favourite books -as did the teachers!

Sunny Snow Day at William Hildyard – Tuesday February 27th The children at William Hildyard Church of England Primary and Nursery School took advantage of the sunny snow day by enjoying some well-earned fun on the snow-covered field. All year groups from Nursery to Year 6 ventured out to explore the wonderful weather together.

In the Hot Seat

IN THE HOT SEAT This month’s “Hot Seat” incumbent is Richard Gombault, who used to tour the world in a rock band (even enjoying a number one single in Japan!) However, Richard is now leading a far more respectable life as a primary school teacher, at Linchfield Community Primary School in Deeping St. James.

Music is at the heart of what he does in school and he loves sharing his undoubted passion – witness the fact that he was voted “Inspirational Music Leader 2017” and he is also a Specialist Leader of Education for Music. Summarising his life outside of the classroom, Richard explains, “I have a young daughter, Sophie, who is the centre of my world. In the little spare time I have, I enjoy films, football (even though I’m an Arsenal fan!), a good book, running, anything to do with Alan Partridge, and the occasional beer or two.

Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood? I was born in Sheffield. My favourite childhood memory is of the endless games of football I used to play with my friends in all weathers. “Headers and Volleys”, “Three and In”, “World Cup”… loved it.

The Exotic Pet Refuge - A Wonderfully Wild Experience for all the Family For more than 30 years, the Exotic Pet Refuge has provided a permanent home to a vast variety of unwanted and neglected exotic animals. There are over 250 animals being taken care of by this fantastic charity and you can even visit them on one of their exciting open days. Sunday April 1st is the date to remember, between 10am-5pm, with refreshments, tombola, stalls, an Easter egg hunt and free parking - Oh my! Entry costs just £6 for adults and £3 for children. Another date for your diary is their Really Wild Film and Memorabilia Event on Sunday July 22nd, with lots of movie stars in attendance. The Refuge survives on donations and volunteer work

Capturing the wild side

I have always admired wildlife from a very young age, and it was during my Foundation Degree at New College, Stamford, where I developed my love for photography too. Since then, I have combined both passions and started travelling very regularly around the Deepings, and also up to the Inner Hebrides, to identify and photograph a huge variety of birds and mammals. I would very much like to travel abroad for my wildlife photography in the next few years, as there are a lot more larger, and potentially dangerous, species that I would love to capture. 58

“MY DOG HAS STARTED ITCHING AND THE VET SAYS IT MUST BE THE FOOD!” We see a higher number of reported skin problems from pet owners at certain times of the year, mainly in the spring and summer. Owners report that their dog begins to itch and scratch, perhaps with a red rash or loss of hair and bald patches. The vet may well say it must be the food, but very often dogs can develop an allergy to environmental issues such as plant and tree pollen, grass seeds etc. in the spring and summer; and all year round to fleas, mites, plug-in fragrances etc. If you are already feeding your dog a cereal-free, wheat-free or grain-free hypoallergenic food, then it is unlikely to be the food. It could be a food intolerance or allergy, (dogs can develop allergies in midlife), but if you are finding it is seasonal and/or the only symptom is itching, then it may well be an environmental issue. Dogs with a food intolerance or allergy often have other

symptoms, aside from the itching – loose stools for example.

• Remember that skin irritation can also be seasonal or hormonally driven.

Thinking of Getting a Pet? Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Some Food for Thought

s spring and summer take hold, and as holidays are looming, many of us think about getting a new pet to join our households. Having a pet can be extremely rewarding and is known to have many health and social benefits. But, before rushing out to acquire your chosen animal, have you considered if you are the right owner for that pet? There are as many reasons for getting a pet as there are different homes for them, so it is important to make sure you are able to provide the home your pet deserves. Firstly, consider how much time you are able to dedicate to their care, as well as how regularly and for how long you are able to spare your time. Some animals, such as stick insects and spiders, only require short, infrequent periods of interaction, whilst others such as dogs would rather be with you for long periods of the day. It is lovely to get a new puppy during the holidays when you can settle them into the home, and it is much easier to toilet train when you are around most of the time. Going back to school and work can be very disruptive and many pups develop separation anxiety and possibly even destructive behaviours at this time. So, if you are out of your home for more than four hours a day, a different pet would be more suitable for your family.

Are you able to provide enough space and appropriate furniture for them, whether this is a cage or sharing your whole house? Many exotic pets have very precise housing requirements and their caging can be very expensive. Discussing their needs with those more expert at looking after these animals will be very informative. Look for your local herpetological or bird society for help. Not only must your petâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s environment provide it with food, water, warmth and bedding, it must also enable it to perform its normal behaviours or else its welfare and health will suffer. You will need to research their needs and check if you are able to provide for them. A small hutch housing a single rabbit does not lead to a happy, healthy life for that bunny! One significant consideration must also be the financial commitment you are undertaking when choosing a pet. As well as their regular ongoing requirements of food, housing, routine grooming, veterinary bills and pet sitting, infrequent or unexpected costs may occur, and you need to be in a position to deal with these too.
