Introduction

Welcome to Your May Issue. The royal wedding is almost upon us and I wonder how many street or garden parties there will be. It’s another great excuse to get together with friends, family and neighbours and enjoy delicious party food. But how much do you actually know about royal weddings? Take our quiz on page 20 to find out. Another fantastic event our issue brings to light is the Deeping Summer Ball in memory of Lucy Jessop and in support of Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). I’m sure it will be a spectacular evening for all who attend and donate to this amazing cause. If that’s not enough, our Gigs and Musical Events page will certainly keep you busy over the weeks to come. Enjoy your May issue!

Claire x

It feels like summer is really just around the corner now… and about time too! The daffodils are in full bloom, the ice cream vans are hitting the streets and the aroma of barbecues fills the air. Also around the corner is prom season, and this issue has lots of tips and advice from local businesses to help you prepare for the big event. If you haven’t got everything sorted already, there’s no need to worry because we’ve got it covered. It’s also been great to hear about our local success stories, including medals won and new records set by Deeping Swimming Club, the Deepings Interact Club quiz night in support of Sue Ryder, and the Deepings Rotary Club Nepal School Project. Read on to find out more. Hopefully, you’re able to enjoy this issue in the comfort of your back garden with your feet up. Happy reading!

Get Ready for the Big One! Advice from Becky Newbold, (Senior Stylist at DC 10 Hairdressing, Market Deeping).

by Gemma Trippett High-school proms, as we recognise them now, originated in the US in the 1950s, although debutante balls in America were the norm in the 18th century. Proms began to occur in the UK around 15 years ago, and have become increasingly popular since. The high-school prom has now become a regular feature marking the end of the summer term in many British schools. While proms are generally for those leaving secondary school in the UK, primary school proms, and even proms for those leaving nursery are becoming more common! And it seems that each year, more and more elements crop up that add to the pressure of getting ready for the big night. Back when I was at secondary school, it was a simple formula which consisted of dress + hair + nails + shoes = perfect. Now, on top of those, there’s tanning, promposals, pre-prom parties … the list goes on! So you’ve done the hard bit … finding the dress. The next steps are a piece of cake, thanks to the local businesses, tips and advice we have around us…

Prom season is quickly approaching. It’s an exciting time to “let your hair down” and be finished with exams. The choices are endless on what dresses to choose and how to wear your hair for the big day. Hopefully, I can help shed some light on this and make the choices a little easier for you. When booking in for your hair appointments, make sure you book well in advance to ensure you get the desired slot. It might also be worth popping in to see your stylist, to talk through what you would like and giving the stylist an idea of the style of dress you have chosen, as this will affect the way you wear your hair. If you have chosen to style your hair at home, plan ahead and practise how you would like to wear your hair a few times. If you are stuck on how to achieve your desired look, tips and tricks are readily available online. When planning your look, try to link in your outfit, hair, accessories and shoes. For example, Rita Ora is a great rolemodel for this. Her outfits flow, with glamorous slim-fitting dresses that she has paired with soft bouncing waves; then, for a more out-there look, a show-stopping, edgy dress with some sharp, clean plaits or a slick-back bun. Whatever you choose, you will all look absolutely stunning. Have a fantastic time planning your look and enjoy the day!

Empire Gym Bucking All Trends by Matt Weston

“Trends end. Time, investment, quality and conversation endures” HIIT, LIIT, LISS, steady state, high reps, low reps, light weight, heavy weight, fast twitch, slow twitch, high intensity, low intensity, oxygen deficit, calorie deficit, eight meals a day, intermittent fasting, breakfast, no breakfast, bulking, cutting, organic, vegan, whey protein, pre-workout, good fat, bad fat, fat burners, whole eggs, egg whites, BCAAs, train every day, don’t train every day, rest days, muscle groups, over-training, under-training, rehab, prehab… Where does the information overload stop?! Why are there so many training options? Why are there so many questions?

Reality check… There isn’t one. Don’t you think that with the evolution and intelligence of the human race, by now, if there were one blueprint for the way we should eat, move, exercise and lose fat, we would all be doing it? We would know. The science would be clear, but it isn’t! For me, it seems like old news (and increasingly I feel like old ways are the best) but I’ll say it again… “Everyone is different and should therefore train according to the way their body reacts. Exercise is a wholly personal and unique experience.” As someone who runs a gym and is a personal trainer, there will always be questions relating to the ‘how?’, ‘why?’ and ‘when?’, but this for me is the joy of it all. Indeed it is the very essence of fitness and I love being asked. But only in doing, feeling, trying and discovering will anyone find out what works for them. Only this morning I read in the newspapers that there are new trends in the offing for the fitness industry for 2018. Some of the buzzwords are ones I’ve seen trotted out before and others are simply re-digesting, re-constituting and re-describing things that people already do in a natural and organic way.

D I S C O V E R I N G

“…due to replace its spinning studios with bikes that connect to big screens so you can see your – and others’ – heartrate, resistance and speed stats writ large.” That’s fine. Each to their own, but personally I believe this goes against the soul of what this activity really is! Is there an instructor? Someone you respect, someone who talks to you, engages with you, empathises with you and shares the euphoric effect as you ‘come up’ on feel-good endorphins at the end of the class. Then there’s the fact that everyone sees everyone’s effort. It’s yet another modern-day symptom of everyone knowing everyone else’s business! Your own personal heartrate and effort shown on a screen for everyone to ‘compete’ with. I believe in competition, but only with one’s self.

What is the magical ‘cure all’?

8

One concerning ‘trend’ though, that caught my eye relates to a predicted change in the way indoor cycling classes might evolve. The Telegraph’s website speaks of a gym in London that is…

T H E

Deepings

How does someone new to this class enter the ‘arena’ which is now being made less personal, less personable and all about chasing the person next to you whose DNA, life experiences and life journey has absolutely nothing to do with you? What kind of reference point is that? My point in all of this is that there is some truth and some opportunity in each of the ‘jargon’ terms listed at the top of this article. But it is not for these to be impressed on anyone. The roles of the ‘fitness professional’ and the ‘gym of the future’ are not to remove human contact and context. Rather it should be to go in exactly the opposite direction. It is no longer the case that the ‘experts’ are the only ones with the information. Everybody at any time can search for and access the information that excites them and pertains to their health and fitness. The challenge is finding a place, a hub, a vehicle that can help you with the information you have mined and turn it into a truly valuable, contextualised asset. Somewhere you know there will be the facilities, the space and the time to discover for yourself what your findings might blossom into, while knowing there is safety in empathy, guidance and expertise surrounding you.

In Support Of

it be an Indoor Cycling class or a High Intensity Circuit class, they can do so knowing the instructor is there for them to ensure firstly they enjoy themselves safely, but also that they are inspired and motivated. But then, when people, when you, want to discover what works for you, in your own space, your own time, in your own way, you can - in the gym.

So, let’s bring it back to Empire Gym. You know us by now. Our brand is our reality. We encompass all of the things I want to see. We have fostered a truly open and supportive environment for everyone. We have recruited the very finest trainers, if classes are your preference. But most of all, we are delighted to see the diversity of training styles and preferred ways of exercising, and we applaud difference! Indeed personally, every single day, I learn from our membership. People really are becoming experts in their own right. All they have ever needed are the right conditions. The right environment, the right interaction and the ability to turn and rely on intelligent, considered conversation. In the fitness industry there are so many ‘business models’, and diversity of choice for people is very important. We are extremely pleased and proud of what Empire has become. Primarily, we are a gym that offers high quality fitness classes, instructed by outstanding and professional instructors. And I think we have changed the perception locally of what the ‘gym’ word means. I hope one day we can change that perception globally. Being a gym, and not only a place that offers classes, means that when people want to be part of a fitness class, whether

I find it really inspiring to see people between sets, or recovering after running, or using the Stairmaster. That moment people stop and are quiet. They think, consider, process and discover. That’s powerful. It’s maybe just thirty seconds, but those moments in your own thoughts between sets are special. Whether you are processing the physical feeling of your training or indeed cogitating the very meaning of life, it doesn’t matter, as long as you are doing it here. Because, believe me or not, we care. We want to help you discover fitness that works for yourself and, in turn, to truly discover yourself. People describe Empire as their home from home. Well, you are very, very welcome x

PRACTITIONER PROFILE - Jake Somers BTEC Level 5 - Remedial sports massage therapist - Providing head-to-toe treatments for your recovery Why did you choose Sports massage? I became interested in sports massage therapy following an injury I sustained falling off my mountain bike. I went over the handle bars, landing on the back of my head, and over stretched my neck and back. My whole body went into a state of protection; with painful widespread muscle spasms which locked up most of my neck, shoulders and upper back so I could hardly move. My brother suggested seeing a massage therapist and just two treatments later I felt fixed. I was really impressed by this and fascinated by his skill, knowledge and treatment techniques that, two weeks later, I enrolled! Where did you study and where do you work now? I began my studies at Peterborough Regional College, whilst juggling a full-time job as a boat builder during the day. I progressed through the

course levels before finishing my studies in London at “Essentials for Health School of Massage”, with a BTEC Level 5 qualification in Sports Injury and Recovery, (the highest), having had the privilege of working with some of the best teachers in the field. I currently work at the Wellhead Practice in Bourne and in the Empire Gym in Market Deeping. What type of patients do you see? I see a variety of patients, ranging from children to the elderly and from athletes to those requiring post-operative rehabilitation to improve their mobility. I treat the whole body from head to toe, covering a wide range of problems with joints and muscles caused by many things, ranging from actual sports injury to those related to poor posture. What do you enjoy about sports massage? The best part of my job is seeing the results of the therapy and how it affects people’s lives. There is nothing better than to be thanked for helping

someone completely recover from an injury or issue that has caused them pain and discomfort for some time. What can people expect? Everyone can expect a high level of respect, empathy and commitment to finding the root cause of their issue. I understand how an injury can affect all aspects of your life and I am determined and looking forward to making a difference. When not at work, what do you like to get up to? I’m a keen adventurist mountain biker (still – despite the fall!) I enjoy hiking, climbing and camping. I guess I just enjoy the great outdoors, the fresh air, coastal landscapes and all that comes with it. For further advice, or if you have any questions at all about suitability, then please contact Jake Somers, Sports and Remedial Massage Therapist at The Wellhead Practice on 01778 392832.

SANDALS HAVE ARRIVED!

F

inally, the weather looks like it’s on the turn and some sunshine is on its way. Please remember that sandals need to be fitted well, as they are usually worn without socks. Little feet are very delicate, so the more natural the materials used for the sandal and footbed, the better it is to ensure airy, cool feet that are comfortable and can still run around when the temperatures get hot!

At Zebedee Shoes, we pride ourselves on our specialist fitting service and excellent customer satisfaction, creating a relaxed and welcoming environment for you to bring your child to. Here are just some of the services that we offer: • Cater from birth up to an adult size 12. • Fit specialist orthotics, splints, inserts etc. • Help with supportive shoes/boots for hyper-mobility, in-toeing etc. • Advice, should you think you need to have your child checked for any foot problems. • Run appointments out of hours for special needs customers and busy mums. • Run appointments during busy “back-to-school” for mums who work or have more than one child to fit. • We have parking facilities at the rear of the shop.

“What Slimming World has Done for Me” by Successful Loser, Nick Brown I joined Cheryl’s Slimming World group one year ago. The reason I joined Slimming World was because I had done it before with good results, but had soon got into bad habits. So, as I’m approaching the big ‘50’, I thought I had to change my eating habits and exercise more. Also, a friend of mine was doing it and took me along to see what it was like. For over ten years, I have had trouble with a sore lower back and, since losing the weight, it has got a lot better. When I started Slimming World, I was over 16 ½ stone. I’m now at my target weight of 13 ½ stone! This is because I have changed my eating habits and chose to use the Slimming World recipes and the support that comes from the group. I won’t lie, it’s not an easy journey, but it is a worthwhile one. I feel healthy and more confident in the things I do. It’s not a diet, it’s changing the way you eat and it doesn’t affect your lifestyle as much as you would think. I do feel it’s a little easier for men, but I have seen great results in the ladies that stick to it, so if you’re not happy with how you feel, give Slimming World a go. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but you don’t know until you try. If you wish to join any of the groups, please contact Cheryl today.

Your Health

Did you Know that Hypnotherapy is Beneficial for Children? by Nicole Woodcock, Hummingbird Hypnotherapy

I

really enjoy working with children. Their perspective on a situation is really eye-opening, especially when they use their imagination. When I sit with them and do the initial consultation about how the brain works, their perception is incredible, even when their parents don’t think they are listening, or they appear to be daydreaming about something else. From personal experience as a child, I remember all those worries, things that bothered me and I still remember some of those situations now. I used to worry about what people thought of me and, to some extent, when I am feeling stressed, that feeling crops up time and time again. It is important to feel relaxed, especially at a young age. It helps us to learn, love and grow. If we are in a relaxed state, we are able

to make better relationships, make a better assessment of situations and feel in control. Using the intellectual brain, and being able to stay in this part of the brain as a child, helps us to stay happy. If we feel happy, we produce serotonin which keeps us in that state and our brain then enables us to find more. I see many children at Hummingbird Hypnotherapy and they all do so much in their dayto-day lives. We have become a society which focuses on daily productivity. This can be really overwhelming, especially for little minds. It’s wonderful to learn new things, enjoy clubs and make friends, but it is also important to rest. Getting adequate and quality sleep allows the brain to process the day’s events so we are ready for the next day. If this isn’t happening, then this can be reflected in a child’s behaviour;

feeling tired, always hungry, angry and emotional. The list is quite extensive. I work with children much the same as I work with adults, whereby I get them to relax and take things one step at a time. Hypnotherapy gets the child to think of all those things they have achieved, and how they can do more while feeling relaxed and happy. If your child is struggling now, whether it’s exam stress, school issues, anger, anxiety, stress, behaviour, to name a few, get in touch. I offer a free initial consultation to all new clients for them to find out more about the benefits of solution-focused hypnotherapy. Positive thoughts.

Gold Medals and Club Records for Deepings Swimming Club Bethany Eagle-Brown and Holly Leggott broke club records as Deepings Swimming Club came away with twenty-five medals, four of them gold, from the Leicester Age Group Meet. Already the club’s record holder as a 14-year-old, Bethany went under one minute in the 100m freestyle to now break the club record as a 15-year-old, winning bronze in the process, while Holly smashed the 50m backstroke record for 15-year olds, winning silver. Gold medal-winning performances came from several younger members of the squad, showing the club’s growing strength in depth. Nine-year-olds Lucia Karic, (50m backstroke), and Emma Dennis, (100m breaststroke), finished first in their age groups, while 10-year-old Alex Sadler won the 200m butterfly. Holly Leggott completed the golden quartet in the 50m freestyle. All four were also among the

Holly Leggott breaks the club’s 50m backstroke record at Leicester (credit Chris Lowndes) club’s silver medallists. Emma swam a new personal best to finish second in the 50m butterfly; Lucia did likewise in the 100m freestyle. Alex took silver in the 100m fly and Holly doubled up in the 50m and 100m backstroke. Also winning silver were Jacob Briers, (50m breaststroke and 50m backstroke), Harry Cardell, (200m butterfly), Jake Jungmann, (100m breaststroke), Bethany EagleBrown, (50m and 100m butterfly),

Amy Tappern, (400m IM), and Joe Lund, (200m IM). Lynn Chapman, Deepings Swimming Club Head Coach, said: “This was a good result for the club in a tough competition with many swimmers seeking Midland times. I’m delighted with everyone’s performances, particularly the younger members of the squad who all swam hard to achieve some excellent personal bests.”

Deepings Interact Quiz Night As a final event of the academic year, the Deepings Interact Club held a quiz night, recently, in support of Sue Ryder, Thorpe

Hall. The event was a success, raising nearly £800. The money raised was due to the hard work of our team, the very generous donations of the local communities for the raffle, and the cod and chips kindly supplied by The Boundary. It was an amazing night which received some really positive feedback, and we hope that the coming year will bring as much success as this one.

New Clinic Keeps Shoe Firm One Step Ahead

A

n award-winning Bourne shoe shop is staying one step ahead of its rivals by launching a unique foot clinic service. North Shoes will open the clinic at their North Street store on May 8th, and it will be run by store manager Ryan Clements, a newly-qualified foot health practitioner. Ryan, 29, gained his qualification as a foot health practitioner through the Maidenhead-based, SMAE Institute, and tutors there told him they knew of no other shoe store offering such a service. He is also a Member of the Open College of Foot Health Professionals (MCFHP), and a Member of the British Association of Foot Health Practitioners (MAFHP). He said: “North Shoes have won a string of Footwear Industry Awards accolades, and we take pride in our customer service. We’ve taken it up another notch with the opening of the foot health clinic in a purpose-built, private, room at the back of our Bourne shop. The clinic is an innovative idea. Feet problems are related to footwear. A lot of people’s feet issues are down to illfitting footwear and not having the knowledge of how footwear can affect their feet.”

treatment and advise people on the correct footwear for them as part of the full package. There is a charge of £30 for all treatments. “A lot of people ignore problems like corns, verrucas, ingrowing toenails and calluses because they can’t get in to see their health care services straightaway. The clinic will be able to help them, and I also have a broad knowledge of the high risk foot. I work to promote healthy feet. It’s important you look after your feet and, for a lot of problems you don’t have to see a GP to resolve them.” Ryan is aiming to broaden the service even further, by taking a course in bio-mechanics, enabling him to advise on people’s gait and how their feet and legs work. He says: “This would enable us to identify and correct other leg problems with orthotics.” Ryan demonstrated his faith in his own feet when he tackled the London Marathon on Sunday April 22nd. He was aiming to complete it in four hours and 15 minutes and raise £2,000 for Oxfam.

Ryan, the Society of Shoe Fitters National Student of the Year in 2016, added: “We will be able to sort out feet problems with

The Deepings Rotary Club support Nepal School Project Ever wondered what it would be like to go to school and not have access to the internet? Well, one or two of us remember those days, but few, if any of us, would remember having no electricity for simple lighting, not just for a while but not having it, full stop. To get an idea of what it is like, turn your electricity off tonight. However, you know that with a simple flip of the switch, you can turn it back on. Some of the schools in Nepal, which are so remote and deprived, have no

switch they can turn on. We are helping to do something about this and, with the aid of a grant of £500 from the Rotary Foundation, our club is making a total contribution of £1,000 to the installation of solar panels at a school in the Jaleshwari region of Khotang, Nepal. When completed, not only will there be light in the school, but it allows DVDs to be installed, giving pupils access to e-books; a whole new world of learning

then opens up to the children. Education is a way out of poverty, so we are delighted to be able to implement this project, not only with the grant from the Rotary Foundation, but in partnership with the Nepal Remote Villages Trust, a charity dedicated to helping the schools in this region. We think this is such a marvellous thing to do and, having started the project, we will let you know how things progress.

SciFest 2018

OMG – It’s OMG!

SciFest is here again! It will take place during 2018 with its own unique mix of science and entertainment.

St Michael and All Angels Church, Langtoft are starting a new service this month.

Organised by an enthusiastic team of teachers and friends, SciFest strives to engender an interest in science by bringing presenters to the primary schools in the Bourne area. It has been doing so every two years since 2000. In addition, there will be three evening shows suitable for all the family. The first event of this year’s SciFest will be held at Witham Hall School on Thursday May 3rd at 7.15 p.m. when Matt Pritchard is bringing his new show, “Wonder Workers”. This is all about the people who started science and is full of demonstrations, together with his famous magic tricks. (Can you make a cut in a sheet of A4 paper and step through the sheet?) 18

SciFest is pleased to announce that it has been shortlisted to be part of the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. This money is raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores, which it then awards to local community projects. Please think about putting your blue token into the ‘SciFest’ box, every time you visit Tesco.

The Potting Shed runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines and cabbages and, towards the end of the month when the risk of frost has gone, they can be planted outdoors. Some of us only set aside a small plot for growing fruit and vegetables, so to maximise your space you can try:• Intercropping – sowing two crops in the same row, one slow and one fast growing. Fast growing crops include Oriental salad leaves, lettuces, radishes, spring onions, spinach and spring-planted shallots. Slow growers are parsnips, sweetcorn, tomatoes, leeks, winter cabbage, cauliflower, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts. You can also sow the fast growers when there is a gap between harvesting one crop and planting another • Catch Cropping – sowing a fast growing crop in the brief period a plot might be empty. Other jobs to do this month include:• Earth up potatoes. • Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage. • Harden off and plant out vegetables sown earlier. • Pot on growing plants. • Put up bean and pea supports. • Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year. Let’s hope for some good weather for growing and planting: enjoy!

Spring so far has seen a variety of weather, from warm sunny days to late snow, cold winds and frost. Let’s hope that May brings us sunshine and warm days: don’t get too complacent though, as May has a habit of throwing a variety of adverse weather conditions at the gardener, and you may have to protect young seedlings from the possibility of a late frost, or make sure they are well watered if we don’t have the rain. Also, hold back on planting out seeds at the beginning of the month, as sometimes they are planted too early: the ground may be too wet or cold and they fail to germinate. Whatever the weather, it does seem to favour the weeds!! So make sure these are kept in check as they take precious nutrients away from young plants and seedlings. When watering young plants and seedlings, it is better to water less frequently but more thoroughly as this gets down to the roots. If you water lightly, it may only wet the surface of the soil and the roots may be encouraged to stay near the surface, where they are more likely to suffer from drought damage. Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous for me to list, but a few include: carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas. Succession sowing ensures that you have a continual supply and not a glut of the same crop, and is particularly good for salad crops which you need to cut and use immediately. Any seeds that were sown earlier will need thinning out: doing this when they are quite small lessens the disturbance to the surrounding plants. Indoors, you can sow chillies, courgettes and squashes,

Photographing the Red Deer of Richmond Park by Lydia Pinfold

T

he British Isles hold a huge array of wildlife spectacles. In the last few years, I have had the pleasure of seeing starling murmurations and looking down on a huge colony of breeding guillemots on the west coast of Scotland. However, one of my favourite events which I have witnessed is the rutting of red deer. This is where the males rub their antlers on trees or shrubs, fight with each other, and herd females together that are ready for mating. In August 2016, I travelled to Richmond Park just outside of London to see the largest land mammals in the UK, the majestic red deer. Fortunately, I arrived during the height of the rutting season and thus, I had to keep my distance from the competing stags. A long zoom lens was essential to achieving close-up images without putting myself and the animals at risk. Alongside watching the stags competing against each other for dominance, I observed many beautiful stag bellows and the fascinating thrashing of the ground to catch vegetation in their antlers which allows them to appear larger and intimidating to their opponent. If you ever consider visiting Richmond Park during the rutting season, you should consider these points: Once you choose a day to travel, ensure the temperature isn’t too warm. Stags tend not rut when they overheat so it’s unlikely that you’ll get the action shots which are so endearing.

Pinfold Photographic 26

D I S C O V E R I N G

T H E

Try and position yourself downwind from the herd to avoid detection. This protects you and the deer. When venturing through the wooded areas, keep an eye out for running stags; they’ll pop up from the shadows, running hard as they chase each other across walking routes. Zoom lenses are the best lens for this wildlife event. I would recommend a 70-300mm lens which will give you close-up and personal images of the deer, while maintaining quality.

The Deeping Summer Ball - In memory of Lucy Jessop This year, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) will be hosting their tombola at The Deeping Summer Ball to fundraise for more heart screenings in our local area. This will be in memory of Lucy Jessop, who sadly passed away when she suffered a cardiac arrest whilst jogging around Northborough in 2015. CRY offers subsidised ECG and Echocardiogram screening to all young people between the ages of fourteen and thirty-five. There is a simple way to diagnose most cardiac abnormalities. This is by having an ECG test. Lucy’s memorial fund is ringfenced for screening. This means that all donations made to the fund go towards holding a screening in the Deepings which is free for young people to attend. A screening session costs £5,000 to screen 100 people.

Brother, will certainly make the event a funktastic success with a mixture of classic and contemporary dance tunes! So far, the previous five Deeping Summer Balls have raised £26,328 for local charities. Some of these include; Parkinson’s UK Bourne, Deeping Men’s Group, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, Deepings Youth Group, Peterborough Breast Unit, South Lincolnshire Dementia Support and purchasing two defibrillators for the local community. This year, some of the proceeds will go towards Deeping Sports and Social Club. Please support this event by purchasing your golden tickets. For more information, follow us on Facebook: DeepingSummerBall

Last September, Lucy’s fund helped to cover the first two days of screenings at The Deepings School. Nine issues were found out of 204 screenings. Thankfully, nine people will be able to get treatment where necessary and they won’t have to go through what Lucy’s family has. The Deeping Summer Ball is the event of the year for the town. After the success of the 2017 ball, it’ll return bigger and better on Saturday 30th June to bring guests another night to remember. Doors will open at 6pm, where guests will be greeted by a Hollywood red carpet experience by the resident photographer and enjoy a complimentary prosecco drinks reception. The venue will feature a well-equipped bar for real ales (as well as fantastic bar staff ) and a guest favourite - the cocktail and champagne bar. Guests will also be able to purchase tickets for the tombola in aid of Cardiac Risk in the Young in memory of Lucy Jessop. From 7pm, the entertainment begins. A four-course seated meal will be served with a specially selected choice of wine available at the bar. Then, the awesome 8-piece groove machine, Funk Soul

Do I Have to Use the Property Lawyer My Estate Agent is Recommending? By Michelle Rickard, PDR SOFTENERS Property Lawyers LTD This is something I hear on a daily basis, eand witquick h ha answer is ‘no’. d upthe

F

When your estate agent recommends a conveyancing solicitor, licensed conveyancer or property lawyer, it is likely the firm they are recommending are paying them a “referral fee”. This fee, which can be in the hundreds of pounds, is usually passed on to you, the client.

Read the small print before you sign any agreements! Every law firm should detail how much they receive from the estate agent for passing business to them. The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC) have a strict referral code. Solicitors and licensed conveyancers are required to set out a full quotation which details their fees, the disbursement costs and associated expenses with your transaction. They are also required to reveal how much they paid for your referral, and I suggest you ask them for details of the referral fee they have paid for your (potential) custom. In addition to checking the amount of money you, the client, are paying for your referred business,

Your Finances

It Could be You!

- by Richard Ash, Director - Liberty Partnership Ltd

S

o, we have recently travelled through the end of another tax year. At Liberty Partnership, we observed a sizeable increase in people looking to finalise their planning strategies as we approached the year-end. This is great news, and shows that individuals and companies are becoming more aware of the tax, investment and pension planning opportunities that are available, including planning techniques that can often save thousands of pounds. It is not all good news though, as HMRC still claimed record receipts for inheritance tax. Higher-rate earners continue to lose child benefit and higher-level tax allowances, and people are still parking their pension reviews, as they simply feel that they ‘do not understand’ any of their arrangements. Perhaps in this new tax year, it really could be you. It could be

your turn to take advice and create a clear picture of how your own finances look. We offer a FREE initial discussion to all of our clients, so you really do not have a great deal to lose. Our experience has found that you will certainly be delighted that you finally got round to considering your own plan! So, don’t delay any further. Pick up the phone, make an appointment and start moving forward with a clearer vison of your financial future. Finally, some celebratory news… We have a culture of professional learning and development at Liberty Partnership and we are delighted to confirm that Joy Carr, Matthew Biggs and Mark Russon have recently passed Chartered Insurance Institute exams. They’re probably now suitably embarrassed, but well done to them all!

Legal Corner

Face-to-Face Advice is Still Important and Available Today! By Richard Wood – Double & Megson Solictors

In this world of ever-increasing technology, the vast majority of us like to use the internet, and this has its value. However, there are very good reasons why we should still visit and use our local services. From a legal perspective, having face-to-face contact with your legal adviser ensures that all matters are thoroughly discussed, and provides an on-going point of contact for any continuing enquiries. When purchasing property, it is essential that the buyers are able to have particular matters explained to them, as many points need to be covered, and things could be misunderstood. Key distinctions have to be made, to ensure procedures are carried out correctly, and these can be more effectively clarified in a face-to-face situation: • Where the buyers are a couple, they need to decide if they wish to hold the property on the basis that they are “joint tenants” or “tenants in common”. • Under the former, if one of them dies, the survivor will

automatically take the deceased person’s share. Whilst that might be what most people think is going to happen, in more complicated family arrangements they may want to hold their property as “tenants in common”, which enables them to provide, in a will or other deed, something different. This could be important in situations where there has been a substantial difference in levels of contributions. It is essential that the buyer or seller and their adviser understand what rights and liabilities exist, and which area of land is to be transferred to another in order to avoid any ambiguity. Any confusion can lead to disputes. In other matters, consulting with your local solicitors has the advantage in that they are familiar with the surrounding community and issues arising within it.

Living with a Disabled Child - Three Difficult Questions by Nick Ash, Managing Director

Living with a disabled child in the family is a challenge, and parents find themselves facing difficult decisions all of the time. It is, however, a sad fact that many parents are reluctant to answer the three most important, and arguably most difficult, questions that they will ever face. So, let’s pose them here: What will happen to my child if I die? The stark truth is that a disabled child is far more likely to be taken into local authority care if their parent dies than an able-bodied child in a similar situation. Yet this is easy to resolve. Most parents of disabled children know exactly who the right person to look after their child is. Making sure the right person gets appointed is as easy as making a correctly worded will.

What happens when my child turns eighteen? Parental responsibility ends when a child turns eighteen, which can leave parents of disabled children reliant on social services when seeking decisions about their child. Most parents we speak to are keen to avoid this situation. Having control of the decisions that are made about your child as they enter adulthood is key to a smooth transition. The methods by which a parent achieves control are specific to an individual’s circumstances. Our key advice is to start early; start thinking about things when your child turns seventeen. Will and Probate Services are specialists in this type of planning. We can help you answer your three questions, and put a plan in place that is right for you and your child. Call us today on 01778 382723 to book your free initial consultation.

What will happen to my money if I die? Any inheritance received by a disabled person has the potential to disrupt a care plan. A grandparent trying to do the right thing, or a parent without the right plans in place, can cause real distress and disruption. Even a large inheritance can be swallowed up quickly when the disabled beneficiary becomes liable for all of their care costs. Worse still, when the money runs out, there is no guarantee that the local authority will be able to fund the original care plan in full. The answer lies in a structure that allows the disabled person to benefit from the inheritance without affecting their care package.

Five Long-haul Experiences for Animal Lovers

Clare Lockett

Travel Counsellor

One of the best things about travelling long-haul is the chance to discover a whole new world of wonderful wildlife and natural beauty. The sheer variety of animals, experiences and habitats across the globe is truly stunning, and your Travel Counsellor is on hand to tailor a unique trip to suit you. Cape Town / Safari A large, diverse and incredibly beautiful country, South Africa is one of the best safari destinations on the planet! From the tropical coast of northern KwaZulu-Natal to the incredible Kruger National Park in the north east, prepare to be awed and inspired by this breathtaking untamed wilderness.

The Serengeti is undoubtedly the most famous wildlife sanctuary anywhere in the world. Unequalled for its natural beauty and the greatest concentration of plains game anywhere, the Serengeti will take your breath away. Kota Kinabalu (Sandakan), Malaysia Animal lovers will not want to miss Malaysia! Head into the emerald-green Kabili Sepilok Forest Reserve and prepare to be wowed by the spectacular sight of the furry, long-limbed orangutans!

It is home to the ‘Big Five’ of African wildlife, (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros), along with herds of plains game and brightly coloured birds. Head to the coast for bountiful marine life, including playful penguins on pretty Boulders Beach in Cape Town and giant humpback whales, bottlenose dolphins and seals off the coast from the seaside town of Hermanus.

In its fabulous jungle setting, the world-famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre cares for orphaned, abandoned and abused orangutans so that they can return to their natural habitat. Set up in 1964 by Barbara Harrison and covering 43 square kilometres of lush rainforest, around 60 to 80 semi-wild orangutans call this area home.

Sri Lanka Packed full of mesmerising sights, wonderful wildlife and palm-fringed beaches, Sri Lanka promises to deliver a truly unforgettable travel experience for animal lovers!

Ubud on Bali Whilst you’d be forgiven for never leaving your sun lounger during a holiday in blissful Bali, head inland and you’ll soon discover that there’s much more to this idyllic island than its glorious coastline. Surrounded by lush rainforest, cascading jungle valleys and terraced paddy fields, Ubud is a “must-see” during your stay. Watch monkeys fly from tree to tree at The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. Home to approximately 700 macaques, who live among over 180 species of trees, this is one of the island’s most popular attractions. Nearby is the Taro Elephant Safari Park, home to 27 Sumatran elephants which have been made homeless by deforestation.

The Udawalawe National Park is one of the best places to spot the famous Sri Lankan elephant, whilst Yala National Park is home to sloth bears, elephants, monkeys, crocodiles and leopards. What’s more, Bundala National Park is where you’ll be able to spy flocks of flamingos, herons and storks. Tanzania From the dramatic volcanic landscape of the Ngorongoro Crater to the fascinating Olduvai Gorge, this incredible country is home to nearly every species of African animal imaginable!

History

Discovering . . . Inside Priory Church Rex Needle

I

t is reckoned that there are almost 40,000 churches in England, their towers and spires to be seen peeping at us on the skyline as we drive through the countryside and each one contains something of interest for the curious if only they had the time to stop and look. One man who never missed an opportunity to investigate was the noted art historian, Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, who spent several years visiting our churches while compiling his massive opus on the historic buildings of England (1964) and it is his enthusiasm that has given so many a renewed interest in our places of worship, especially those to be found in remote locations and only used by devoted congregations on a Sunday yet worthy a far wider audience. He was therefore pleasantly surprised to find himself in Deeping St James and to discover the Priory Church tucked away in a side street, yet an imposing building, consecrated in 1139 as part of a Benedictine Priory from Thorney Abbey which brought Christianity to this part of South Lincolnshire, and he was duly impressed to find it a church of unexpected size with an early 18th century tower and a spire that can be seen ten miles away. The more recent origins of the tower are as a result of

44

the original collapsing in 1717 after the foundations had rotted, a situation caused by centuries of flooding, but the church solicited help from other parishes to rebuild it in the present form. Pevsner was delighted to find an Early English porch adorned with a hood mould and dog-tooth decoration indicating a date between 1200 and 1300 and he was particularly impressed with the array of large Decorated windows but on stepping inside he found an even greater surprise on seeing the transitional south arcade, seven bays long and continued by a long chancel, of such grandeur that he described it as “astounding. This is the nave of the priory, botched up, knocked about but quite magnificent. Near the pulpit is a walled up arch, probably 11th century, and could have been intended as the entrance to a transept, a chapel or a covered way leading to the priory, while the pulpit itself remembers a former parishioner, the Rev J M Cooper, who did much to preserve the fabric of the church during the late 19th century by providing a new roof for the south aisle, stained glass windows, central heating and new pews. Eating Out

Supper’s Served

Nothing beats a fish supper – and Linfords serves up the very best. So why not make the most of fine summer evenings and enjoy an al fresco meal in their courtyard? Paul and Pat Linford have been cooking up their awardwinning fish and chips since 1989, all the while prioritising quality of ingredients and service, above all else. Favourites such as cod, haddock and plaice, together with rock salmon, (or huss), are cooked to your liking: in a crisp batter, lightly dusted in flour or steamed. The quality at Linfords Traditional Fish and Chips is certainly consistent – their top five-star food hygiene rating has just been reissued and they boast a coveted five-star Fish & Chip Quality Award from the National Federation of Fish Friers. ‘We’ve made it our mission to stay on our toes and keep the quality up,’ explains Paul. Make a meal of it Linfords is both a takeaway and restaurant, meaning hungry diners can also enjoy table service and a relaxed ambience, as they tuck into the nation’s favourite. The restaurant is fully licensed and there’s a “Special” on the menu that changes weekly.

courtyard, complete with potted plants and shade sail for the hottest days, is ideal for both lunches and suppers – and there’s nothing quite like eating outside, in the fresh air, in the company of good friends or family. Gluten-free Mondays Linfords also runs its hugely popular, gluten-free Mondays, when gluten-free batter is available alongside the traditional batter. Completely separate utensils and a fresh change of oil ensure there’s no chance of cross-contamination, and there’s even gluten-free vinegar to splash on your chips! The health conscious among us can opt for steamed or lightly floured fish, served up with salad in place of chips for a deliciously low-fat meal. Dusting the fish in flour rather than dipping it in batter gives a coating just thin enough so the fish can be fried, ensuring exceptional succulence without the added calories.

As well as serving up all the usual staples, the restaurant offers home-made extras such as Linford’s lip-smacklingly satisfying coleslaw. Diners can also enjoy the all-day special for under £10: a meal served with peas and bread, complete with a tea, coffee or soft drink. And when you’re done, try one of their indulgent desserts, from jam sponge to sticky toffee pudding.

Buying sustainably sourced fish can be something of a minefield these days – we all want to do the right thing, but getting it right can be difficult. Linfords has this sussed too, with all of their fish traceable from just two fishing vessels that harvest the seas, with the long-term survival of fish stocks in mind. Smaller fish – the next generation – can escape the nets, so that only larger fish remain. These are then filleted and cut to size on site.

One of the most appealing aspects of the restaurant is its courtyard, which offers the tantalising prospect of al fresco dining on a fine summer’s day or evening. The stone-walled

So, whether you’re a cod connoisseur, have a hankering for haddock, or simply want a battered sausage, burger or pie, there’s a lot to sample and enjoy at Linfords this summer.

On a Sunday, services are held at 10:30am and 6pm, except for the second Sunday of the month, (when the 10:30am remains the same, but we hold “Messy Church” at 4pm in the afternoon). Whilst all services are open to all ages, “Messy Church” in particular brings families together to worship, and includes crafts, stories and a shared tea together.

Other activities such as home fellowships, social events, festivals, pantomimes, holiday club for the elderly, (and much more besides), happen at various times throughout the year, and more information will be published on these as they are planned. Look out for our advertising - or simply ask what is coming up next!

Saturday mornings begin with prayers at 9am and, once a month on the first Saturday, a coffee morning. On a Tuesday at 12:00 noon, there is “Lunchbox”, which caters for older people in the community, whilst “Tots at Ten” meets on a Friday from 10am 11:30am and is, as the name suggests, a parent/carer and child group.

The building we presently have was built around thirty years ago on the original site, and is a multi-purpose building, which is regularly used by the Blood Donors and U3A, among others. We take an active part in Churches Together in Deeping, sharing in all the events, supporting the food bank, and sharing stalls on the Christmas market, at the Duck Derby and Raft Race - where

you may also see some of us doing a bit of drama or offering craft activities! At Easter, you may also have seen some of us walking through Deeping with the cross, and joining with a congregation in the Methodist Church for a service, concluding with our final song and prayers together. At the heart of everything we do, we are simply a group of ordinary people who seek to be disciples of Jesus, and we do this through fun and laughter, as well as some more serious moments. There is always something on offer - come and give us a try!

This month, regular puzzlers will notice a change in their monthly challenge. As I’m sure all avid film fans will already know, 2018 marks the centenary of the silent movie, Cupid Angling, becoming ‘The First Photoplay made in Natural Colors’, according to the 1918 advertisement in the San Francisco Chronicle. This month, your task is to identify the following famous movie quotes – (no prize... just that inner glow you feel when you get them all/most/or at least a few of them right!) 1) "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse." 2) "He's not the Messiah. He's a very naughty boy!" 3) “Houston, we have a problem.” 4) "May the Force be with you."

5) "Here's another nice mess you've gotten me into!" 6) "A boy's best friend is his mother." 7) "Just keep swimming." 8) "You talkin' to me?"

9) "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn!” 10) “To infinity and beyond!"

11) "They call me Mister Tibbs."

12) "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers." 13) "The name’s Bond. James Bond." 14) "I'll be back."

15) "You're gonna need a bigger boat."

16) "I'm also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her." 17) "Go ahead, make my day."

18) "Life is a box of chocolates, Forrest. You never know what you're gonna get." 19) "Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me. Aren't you?" 20) "Here's Johnny!"

ANSWERS: 1) Don Corleone (Marlon Brando), ‘The Godfather’ (1972). 2) Brian's mother (Terry Jones), ‘Life of Brian’ (1979). 3) Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), ‘Apollo 13’ (1995). 4) Han Solo (Harrison Ford), ‘Star Wars’ (1977). 5) Ollie (Oliver Hardy), ‘Sons of the Desert’ (1933). 6) Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), ‘Psycho’ (1960). 7) Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), ‘Finding Nemo’ (2003). 8) Travis Bickle (Robert de Niro), ‘Taxi Driver’ (1976). 9) Rhett Butler (Clark Gable), ‘Gone with the Wind’ (1939). 10) Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), ‘Toy Story’ (1995). 11) Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier), ‘In the Heat of the Night’ (1967). 12) Blanche DuBois (Vivien Leigh) ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ (1951). 13) James Bond (Sean Connery), ‘Dr No’ (1962). 14) The Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger), ‘The Terminator’ (1984). 15) Brody (Roy Scheider), ‘Jaws’ (1975). 16) Anna Scott (Julia Roberts), ‘Notting Hill’ (1999). 17) Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood), ‘Sudden Impact’ (1983). 18) Mrs. Gump (Sally Field), ‘Forrest Gump’ (1994). 19) Ben Braddock (Dustin Hoffman), ‘The Graduate’ (1967). 20) Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), ‘The Shining’ (1980).

School News LINCHFIELD PRIMARY SCHOOL The Mini Gs at Wembley! (by Year 6 pupils, Daisy Nickerson and Bella Hines) You may have read our previous feature in the “Discovering Deeping” magazine, about our school choir, The Mini Gs, performing our own song at Wembley as part of the “Voice In A Million” concert. However, this time it is a little different: we have now performed at Wembley and this is our take on the incredible event. We began our day by boarding the coach that would take us to Wembley. “I think we were all excited and scared; we didn’t know what was going to come,” states Joshua, a valued member of the Mini Gs. Once we had arrived at Wembley, we took our seats and the rehearsals began! Our practice went well and we all felt more confident than we had earlier that day. Soon, the main event started and nerves were running high. Each school choir paraded around the

New Sports Kit Inspires Success The children from Market Deeping Community Primary School were excited to put on their new sports kit to represent the school in matches over the past few weeks. The new kit inspired the rugby team to win a local tag-rugby tournament and the football team to record their first win of the year! The netball team are feeling much more professional and eager to get on the court in the next few weeks to hopefully meet with the same success.

stage with their banner that their school choir had made. Along with Mr Gombault, three Year 6 children, (Emma, Alice and Millie), held the banner for the Mini Gs. After the banner parade was finished, The Mini G’s were called back stage, ready to perform. Our time had come to show Wembley what the Mini Gs could do! “It was a proud moment for me and everyone else in the choir; we had never done anything like this before,” Evie, a member of the Mini Gs, claimed . The performance went brilliantly, and it was an incredible feeling to perform in front of so many people. Eat your heart out, Little Mix! When we got offstage, we were all hugging each other, laughing and crying. It was a very emotional moment! We then went and sat back down with the rest of the “Voice in a Million” choir in the arena and sang the rest of the Voice songs we’d rehearsed. After three tiring but enjoyable hours of performing, we had finally finished. We didn’t get back to school until 1am and we were exhausted the next day, but it was totally worth it! Overall, the experience was amazing, and we would all like to thank Mr Gombault for the opportunity!

The kit was funded by the work of the school’s PTFA, (Parents, Teachers and Friends Association), as well as by local sponsor, catering equipment suppliers, KFE Ltd. Local supplier, Shotbowl, worked closely with the school to design the new kits which match the new look of the school, which is currently undergoing expansion work. Headteacher, Mark Ratchford, said: ‘Sport is essential to provide children with lifelong learning about themselves and the importance of team work. Children should learn how to win and lose with good grace. Some will excel in sport when other aspects of school can be difficult. It is important too, that, at some point in their schooling, every child gets to represent the school at sport and has the opportunity to wear the school kit.’ PTFA Chair Person, Gemma Cooper, said: ‘It has been great to support the school with new football and netball kit and school jackets that are used for all school trips. The children are taking real pride in representing the school in the community, and we are very proud of the parental support that we have for our fundraising.’

Mayor Words from the Mayor of Market Deeping

Councillor Mrs Pauline Redshaw

Council members were delighted when Candace Brent, our Town Clerk, gained her CILCA qualifications. This means she is well qualified to advise the Council on procedures and the governance of the Council. We send her many congratulations. Our new Deputy Clerk, Sarah Lydford, is settling in to her new post and already is a great asset to the Council.

will be looking, among other things, for tidy gardens, litter-free paths and roads, tidy notice boards, as well as a well-presented industrial site, school grounds and cemeteries. We hope all of our community will help in this project. The judges do not say when they will visit, so it’s an on-going tidy up!

I would like to express my thanks to the Council’s Ground Staff who have kept our open spaces looking so good during the difficult winter months. Unfortunately, some events have had to be postponed due to the state of the grass, but the Fair will be on, we can assure you. The Rectory Paddock, (the conservation area), is looking very good. The pond is bubbling with frog spawn and the daffodils have brought a splash of colour to the dark days of winter. Wild flowers have been planted, and we look forward to seeing them bloom. Volunteers, who help to look after the paddock, have been nominated for an Environmental Award from the Lincolnshire Wild Life Trust. They have reached the second round of the selection process - we wish them well. The town has been entered for the Best Kept Village Award. It will take a big community effort to impress the judges. My thanks go to my fellow Councillors and to the Town Clerks for keeping us in order. All good wishes to my successor.

My time on the Mayoral Circuit has been interesting and informative. It has taken my Consort, Rob, and me to different parts of Lincolnshire and North Cambridgeshire. We have enjoyed meeting fellow Councillors and discussing problems, especially those we have in common. On a personal note, I’d like to thank Rob for his support this year he has been very tolerant.

SPRING DANGERS Spring brings visions of sunshine and flowers, but watch out for these potential dangers to your pet. Pets that have been cooped up all winter are suddenly more susceptible to environmental irritants, exposure to toxic chemicals, not to mention activityrelated injuries, parasitic diseases and chance encounters with critters that don’t have their best interests in mind. Toxic Lawn Treatments Think about what products you are using on your lawn, and always check the label.

dangerous. Most dogs and cats live around toxic plants and shrubs and don’t eat them. If you have a puppy, however, or a dog or cat who is notorious for eating anything he finds, be vigilant during the blooming season. Watch out for the very common spring bloomers such as azalea, rhododendrons, bluebells, daffodil/ narcissus bulbs, foxglove, yew and lilyof-the-valley, to name a few.

Beware of your neighbour’s toxic chemistry projects too! It’s amazing what a non-pet owner will use just to keep a lawn looking like a vivid green carpet, free of weeds…

Bugging Out Spring means warmer weather, longer days and lots of bugs. It’s time to start your pets on worm, flea and tick preventatives; essential during the warmer months when bugs are at their most prevalent. Don’t forget to check your pet for ticks after walks in wooded or grassy areas.

Toxic Plants and Shrubs Many plants, if eaten, may cause a stomach upset, but certain beautiful flowers, shrubs, wild flowers and mushrooms can be extremely

“Mind the Gap” - How to Avoid Dog Breath!

A

gap between your front teeth may be aesthetically pleasing in models, but for our pets it doesn’t quite hold true. A gap-filled smile from a pet indicates previous dental problems which caused gum disease and unsociable, doggy, bad breath. Periodontal disease, which affects the gums, supporting ligaments and underlying bone, is exceptionally common, with 87% of all pets over the age of three suffering from this complaint. The normal mouth of dogs and cats has 750 million bacteria per millilitre of saliva. Natural defence mechanisms such as salivation and chewing will help keep the bacterial population under control. Problems arise when teeth become overcrowded, misaligned, fractured or affected by poor diet. Any one of these factors may tip the balance in favour of periodontal disease. In its simplest form, it begins with plaque, a mixture of saliva and bacteria which is difficult to rinse off with water, and needs to be removed by mechanical means, such as brushing. Once the plaque gains a foothold, it becomes mineralised and hardened to form calculus or tartar. Even the tiniest layer of calculus can establish a rough surface which will predispose the teeth to retain even more plaque. Pretty soon, your pet’s teeth will be covered with a layer of hard material, the underlying gums will eventually become inflamed and bleed easily

when touched. This state is commonly referred to as gingivitis. Fortunately, if you remove the plaque through professional scaling at this time, gingivitis can be completely reversed. Left untreated though, the gingivitis will lead to the dreaded periodontitis. Periodontitis causes permanent damage to the gums and teeth, causing tooth loss. Worse still, the disease can affect other body organs. Every time your pet chews food, their mouth will release millions of bacteria which will be transported into the blood stream to other parts of the body, such as the liver and heart, and infections can occur. So how do you detect impending dental problems? If your pet allows, have a quick look under the lip to the very back of the mouth. Located in the upper jaw is a very large molar tooth called the carnassial. This tooth is important to identify as it is likely to get plaque as it is close to the salivary duct. Monitor this tooth for discolouration and any evidence of gum reddening. Once you have found early dental disease, take your pet to your vet for a thorough scale and polish under general anaesthesia. Tooth brushing at home will not remove tartar, only plaque. The vet will scale off the tartar and polish the enamel underneath. After cleaning, it’s over to you for regular tooth brushing and diets that encourage chewing, salivation and mechanical scraping of the teeth.

Exotic Pets Refuge Open Day – Not Such Exotic Weather! The Exotic Pet Refuge’s Open Day on Easter Sunday was a huge success. So many visitors kindly braved the weather, donning their wellington boots, to see the Refuge’s 250 exotic mammals, birds and reptiles, and enjoy the stalls and entertainment on offer. The owners of the Refuge were especially thankful to the local businesses that donated gifts to their Easter Tombola. All of the animals were on top form and they really enjoyed the company of the visitors, adults and children alike. The next Open Day is on Sunday May 20th, so fingers crossed the weather is kinder to everyone. Keep checking their Facebook page for more updates.
