We’re starting June on a high. This month’s issue is packed full of inspiring and exciting articles that we hope you’ll love to read just as much as we did. The royal wedding has not long been and gone; wasn’t it just spectacular? It was certainly a love-filled day that I will never forget. Carrying on with the royal theme, flick over to page 51 to read about the Rose Lodge Care Home Open Day which had a very special theme celebrating the Queen’s birthday. We also get to learn about a fascinating local lady, Jenna Kane, on page 32 for this month’s ‘In the Hot Seat’. It’s fantastic to know that we have such hard-working and caring individuals living in and around our little town. Happy reading!

Nails - How to Make Them Your Best Accessory by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness
W
hether you are writing in your journal, introducing yourself, telling an animated story, or pressing your fingers into a yoga mat - many of life’s best activities involve your hands. Your hands tell the world how healthy you are, how old you are, and how well you take care of yourself. Yet they are often taken for granted. Beautiful hands do not usually just happen. Nails and hands need hydrating, moisturising and protecting from the elements. Here are Renu’s top tips on how you can make your hands your best accessory.
1
Keep them clean – Your hands do everything for you, so it’s very easy for your hands to become covered in dry, peeling skin, and decorated with dirty or undernourished nails. Strong detergents and cleaning products can strip the natural oils from your hands that keep them youthful and healthy. Use a good quality anti-bacterial hand wash, and exfoliate your hands two or three times a week with a gentle exfoliator. We would recommend Decleor 1000 grain exfoliator, which can be used all over the body - (£28.00).
4
Problem nails – There are five different nail types, so it’s very important that if you have problem nails you establish the right formula for you. Using the wrong treatment will either elevate the problem or make no difference at all. Our therapists are trained in Nailtiques formulas that have different percentages of protein, depending on your nails’ needs. Regular use of these will solve the problem within six weeks – (from £13.00).
5
Nourish, protect, polish - Beautifully polished nails promote a well-groomed image and can create a more youthful appearance. A base coat is really important to protect the nail bed. Whilst the polish will help protect the nail from the elements, your nails also need time to breathe. If you can’t face showing them off without a polish, then make sure you use a cuticle oil on a regular basis, and always remove polish with a non-acetone remover, such as Nailtiques Non-Acetone Remover – (£6.20). If you would like more advice on which formula will work for your hands and nails, please contact us on 01778 423923.
2
Moisturise – It’s the skin on the back of your hands that will become thin and wrinkly long before your palms, so apply your hand cream to the back of your hands, and only use the excess on the palms. A good quality hand cream will not leave your hands sticky and greasy. Each time you use your anti-ageing cream and serum on your face, rub the excess into the backs of your hands. We would recommend Nailtiques Cuticle and Hand Conditioner - (from £8.00) and Decleor Hand Cream – (£12.00).
3
Care for your cuticles – Healthy cuticles cultivate healthy nails. Make sure you rub your moisturiser into the nail and cuticle as well as your hands. Use a cuticle oil daily; this will keep the nail hydrated and promote youthful-looking hands. We would recommend Nailtiques Cuticle Care oil - (£9.00).

Exercise with Ailment and Injury - (There’s always something you CAN do and we will help you ‘Find A Way’) by Matt Weston At Empire, we constantly talk about our gym being for everyone. And it is, even if you are suffering with ailment or injury. We pride ourselves on telling, showing and demonstrating to people that there is always something you can do, and there is opportunity in all circumstances. There is always something to feel positive about. So how do we do it? Firstly, it is about being professional and responsible, providing a safe and fit-for-purpose environment in which there are qualified staff who are skilled and personable enough to impart their knowledge and make a person or group of people feel confident, supported and at ease. All Empire Gym staff are Level 3 Personal Trainers or Level 2 Gym Instructors, they are Emergency First Aid qualified and trained to use our on-site defibrillator. Indeed, we are very proud to have an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) in the gym. I really hope we never have to use it, but its presence alone communicates a commitment and dedication to safety.
What are their aspirations? What is their experience in a gym environment? What type of training do they naturally gravitate to and what would they like additional support with? The very first question, however, is always: “Are there any health or medical conditions or circumstances we need to know about?” Only when asking all of these questions can we make sure people are training safely, and that we can offer the appropriate support. It is also the start of a relationship rather than a person being ‘anonymous’, which is at the heart of all we do. So, what are some of the conditions and circumstances people present when joining the gym? To name but a few: • Painful joints, arthritis, joint replacements.
Then there is the equipment; also fit for purpose, properly maintained and safe for use. We ensure its proper use by advising all new members to have a free gym induction, during which we tour the gym and take part in exercise with the person or persons.
• Existing or historic heart conditions or history of stroke.
An induction is also an opportunity to find out about a new member.
• Asthma.
• COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). • Diabetes / Pre-Diabetes.
• Parkinson’s disease. • Cerebral palsy. • Recovery from breast cancer and related procedures. • Amputated limbs. • Use of a wheelchair. • Recovery and rehabilitation from addiction. There are many, many more. But we don’t let this phase us. Indeed we encourage and insist on the sharing of such important information. Only when we

Health know, can we adjust, adapt and hone our approach. There is a skill, a talent and finesse to making people feel at ease. And we hope we have all demonstrated that. But this must be supported with the qualifications we all have and it must be allied with a willingness to read, research, forage and discover. Here are two examples of this. Early in the inception of Empire Gym, we noticed that there was an interest from older people. I remember we would have an almost daily visit from a gentleman called Geoff Williamson, who has sadly since passed away. Geoff had a historic heart condition and would visit the Cardiac Rehabilitation Team in Stamford to continue his rehabilitation and recovery and take part in specifically designed, light circuit training scenarios. I asked Geoff, and in turn the Cardiac Rehabilitation Team, if I could come to watch, and in some way help and learn about the nuances of transitioning people with serious heart conditions back to exercise. I learned about their techniques, the tempo of the sessions, how to set safe parameters and track progress. So, one thing we use almost every month at Empire is the ‘Karvonen Scale’, which allows us to calculate the safe working heart rate of a person depending upon their resting heart rate, age, and whether or not they are taking Beta Blockers, for example. So, when someone speaks to us for the first time and they have an existing or historic heart condition, we insist on a detailed conversation and calculation of their specific Karvonen readings before we allow even the induction to take place. We also have an on-site heart rate monitor and watch that the person can wear during the session for a long as they wish. Ultimately, we take the advice of a person’s doctor and will always respect that, as the anchor point for all discussion, but in doing what we do with the calculations and heart rate monitor, we provide structure, framework, confidence and trust. People often blossom thereafter. Probably the finest example of adapting, researching, innovating and using that talent and intuition, is my brother
David’s work with a wonderful young man called Tom Neale. Tom has cerebral palsy, which causes unsteadiness of the arms and legs and general disorder of movement. Over the weeks and months that Dave has worked with him through innovative drills in the gym that sometimes include a football and lots of boxing and pad work, Tom is developing and doing things his physiotherapists didn’t think possible. Dave has of course taken the advice of Tom’s mum and of his support team, physiotherapists and neurologists. Their boxing sessions are remarkable and they have seen Tom performing cross-hemisphere movements that had previously been very difficult, considering his condition. Between them, they are breaking boundaries and building friendship. So, to conclude… there is always something that CAN be done. We are prepared, qualified and, thanks to our parents, ready with the personal skills to listen, talk and, we hope, inspire. Indeed, all of our staff have conversational talent and the emotional intelligence that is so necessary in this environment. If you have been through, or are going through challenging times, we want to know you. You are our kind of people. Let us help you ‘Find A Way’.

Are Your Feet Ready for the Summer? - Advice from the Professionals In preparation for the summer, Rachael Baker and Matthew Phillips - registered podiatrists / chiropodists at The Wellhead Practice, discuss common, everyday foot conditions and some helpful tips. Q: What is one of the more everyday conditions you help with? A: Simple nail cutting. Many patients really struggle to trim their own nails. This can be due to reduced flexibility or perhaps due to osteoarthritis of the hands which makes it hard to hold nail clippers. Even inadequate eyesight can pose a problem. At The Wellhead Practice, we offer a dedicated professional nail-cutting appointment (ÂŁ23), which is ideal if your feet are generally in good condition, and you only need a trim. Q: What else do you commonly see? A: Thick nails. Trauma to the nail bed perhaps from dropping something onto the toe or even poorly fitting shoes can cause these. Treatment involves reducing the thickness using a special drill and offering advice on things like footwear to help reduce recurrence. For example, as feet expand over the course of a day, avoiding shoe shopping in the morning may prevent you finding that your new shoes are too tight by the afternoon. Poor footwear can also cause problems like corns and calluses. Fungal nails. These affect one or many nails with a discoloured and thickened appearance and are often crumbly in texture. Treatment is by applying a topical lacquer to the nail or via oral medication. As the fungus has to grow out of the nail, treatment can take several months. Most people know that keeping your feet clean is important, but drying them well, which

includes between the toes, is a good preventative measure for fungal problems. Involuted nails. Here the nail curves around the edges and presses into the sides of your toe. The temptation is often to cut down the sides but this can lead to in-growing nails. Letting the nails grow and clearing out the edge of the nail with an old tooth brush, using moisturising cream along the sides, may help. A buildup of dead skin, soap, sock fluff etc can put extra pressure on the nail, causing pain. In-growing toe nails. Incorrect nail cutting, direct injury or picking at toe nails can lead to a spike of nail to grow into the flesh of the toe. Treatment ranges from cutting the nail correctly and removing the spike, to removal of the side or whole nail with surgery, under local anaesthetic, (which if needed can be performed here at the Practice). Q: Anything else I should know? A: Remember to check your feet regularly. They take a lot of daily abuse and it is

important, particularly for higher risk groups such as those with diabetes, poor circulation or lack of sensation. Consult a professional. People habitually see a dentist for their teeth, an optician for their eyes, so visit a podiatrist for a diagnosis and advice for your feet. Many patients are embarrassed by their feet, but we have seen it all and treat everyone with professionalism and confidentiality. Both our podiatrists are experienced practitioners, members of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists and registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). Rachael Baker brings thirty-five years of NHS and private foot-care knowledge, with an expertise in diabetic foot care. Matthew Phillips treats a wide range of foot complaints, as well as having a special interest in bio-mechanical foot assessments for the prescription of shoe orthotics.

Daily Stress - What do You Consider Stressful? by Nicole Woodcock, Hummingbird Hypnotherapy
W
e all have stress and, in small doses, it’s good for us. A release of cortisol makes us alert and productive. It’s when we are on high alert and consistently producing cortisol and adrenalin that we can start to struggle; feeling buzzy or anxious, followed by feeling low and demotivated. Getting the right balance can be difficult and can impact on the body further afield, not only emotionally but physically too. Stress affects how we speak to ourselves. Being aware of our own negative self-talk is really important. It also has a huge impact on how we eat. Stress burns calories and can also make us feel quite lethargic, reaching for a quick chocolate or caffeine hit to help us feel better, only
to realise a few hours later that we need another one. What do you do to de-stress? Do you work out, relax, have treatments or an early night? All of these can help us to manage our stress levels and anxieties, boost mood and keep us productive. I work with a lot of people who have stressful jobs, while juggling work and home life. The first person that ends up being affected by stress is usually the last person to look after themself. Valid, daily time-out, whether to enjoy a hot cup of tea, lunch with a friend, meditation or just to enjoy your surroundings is necessary every day to keep you relaxed and calm.
Positive interactions, actions and thoughts enable our brain to keep boosting our serotonin levels so we are able to stay happy. A happy brain means we are then more relaxed, can enjoy daily tasks and be far more productive in reaching our goals. So, if you or any of your work colleagues and friends would like to know more, please get in touch. I do hourly workshops for businesses, and have regular relaxation classes to unwind and de-stress after a long week. Enjoy the sunshine! Positive thoughts,
Nicole

Rose and Sweet Pea Show
Be prepared to get drenched in the rainbow and run, walk or dance the 5km of happiness, in support of your local hospice.
For over one hundred years, the Rose and Sweet Pea Show has been an annual fixture in the Priory Church calendar. Always held on the last Saturday in June, the Horticultural Show was an opportunity for local gardeners to display their edible and floral produce including roses and sweet peas. Older residents have fond memories of gathering with friends on what was then the vicarage lawn to watch the entertainments and the crowning of the Rose Queen, before enjoying tea and cake. A report of the event in 1929 mentioned dancing from 9pm to 11pm to Mrs Long’s Orchestra!
Saturday June 30th - 1pm to 4.30pm. Priory Church, Hall and Gardens - Deeping St James.
Team up with friends, family, workmates or just a bunch of strangers, and join the most colourful event of the summer as the Fun Colour Rush Tour arrives in Peterborough. This year, there will be a Children’s Fancy Dress Parade and there will be a variety of stalls run by local groups. Details of how to enter the Horticultural Show are available on the church website, www. dsj.org.uk . The classes have remained very much the same for many years, but children have an opportunity to enter several classes, including designing and making a parachute for a favourite teddy, which will then be tested by a “Teddy Bear Drop” from the Church Tower, later in the afternoon. We hope that many people will come to enjoy an afternoon of fun for all ages. june 2018
Advice
Citizens Advice in The Deepings
We are delighted that this is the start of a regular item, highlighting Citizens Advice services in the Deepings. These include a drop-in at the New Community Centre, Market Deeping, on Wednesdays between 10am and 3pm, where people go through a fifteen minute assessment in the morning, prior to being offered an appointment in the afternoon, if needed. There is also the availability of referrals to Deeping St. James, fortnightly on Thursdays, where the United Churches have generously funded an outreach at the Institute, on 38 Church Street, Deeping St. James. Almost everybody will know of the organisation, Citizens Advice, but not so many realise the extent of the services provided, with help ranging from money issues to problems at work, from housing problems through to consumer rights, to name but a few. Sometimes a person has more than one problem, and they are often linked, so problems are tackled ‘in the round’, making sure people don’t have to keep returning, in order to get an overall solution. The main problem areas remain debt and benefits queries, which together account for over half of all enquiries. Advice is also available on the telephone advice line

Deepings S. C. Enjoys Successful East Midlands Swimming Championships Deepings Swimming Club enjoyed a successful first weekend of racing at the East Midlands Regional Championships, with the team making eighteen finals, winning two medals and breaking one club record.
Ten swimmers qualified for finals in their events: Holly Leggott, Jessie Spooner, Harry Cardell, Bailie Harrison, Isabel Spinley, Bethany Eagle-Brown, Tom Adams, Lorna McGill, Louis Metselaar and Kallum Penman.
Standout performances came from Isabel Spinley and Bethany Eagle-Brown. Seventeen-yearold Isabel brought home gold in the 100m butterfly and silver in the 200m butterfly, while Bethany Eagle-Brown, 15, produced a club record in the final of the 100m freestyle, finishing just outside the medals in fifth.
“Once again, Isabel showed why she is one of the country’s most promising young swimmers with her two medals, while many of our other swimmers have a chance to join her on the biggest stage at British nationals later this year if they continue their strong progress,” commented Head Coach, Lynn Chapman.
The squad of sixteen swimmers also achieved twenty-four longcourse personal bests at the championships, which were held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield on April 14th and 15th. The second weekend of racing takes place on May 7th.
Isabel was competing at the championships fresh from her latest selection for Great Britain at the international open meet in Marseille on April 6th – 8th. The Deepings ace competed in four races. She finished third in the

Maxey Classic and Thoroughbred Car, Motorcycle and 4x4 Show Maxey’s Classic and Thoroughbred Car, Bike and 4x4 Show is being held on Saturday August 11th at its picturesque lakeside venue at Quarry Lane, Maxey - one mile off the A15, south of Market Deeping. One of the most popular regional shows, the long-established Maxey event is sure to attract a large entry of gleaming two- and fourwheelers. It’s also a great day out for all of the family with live music, a real-ale bar, barbecue and children’s amusements. Admission is just £4, with free entry for show car drivers and children under 14. The show opens at 11am, with judging taking place between 12:30pm and 3:00pm. As usual, the organisers have recruited several national motoring 16

journalists to help with the difficult job of picking the winners. The event is organised by the Maxey Charity Club which was founded in 1998. It all began with a donation bottle in the local Bluebell pub in Maxey, and has since gone on to raise over £70,000 for local causes. The Maxey Car Show started in 2001 with a 100 vehicle turnout. It has become increasingly well-known over the years and last year attracted over 250 vehicles. These included a wide range of classics, exotics like modern Ferraris, kit cars and a 4x4 category. There are also classes for classic motorcycles

Local Entrepreneur and Bestselling Author to Speak at Local Charity Event Neville Wright, founder of Kiddicare and now property developer, philanthropist and author of the Amazon bestseller, “The Answer is Yes, Now What Was the Question?” will be the guest speaker at a Charity Garden Party on Wednesday, June 20th in Stamford. The annual event is organised by Pilot Fish, (a commercial finance company in Bourne), and is well attended by local professionals from all over the area. Last year they raised over £3,000 for the Phoebe Research Fund. Neville’s book was recently ranked number one in the Amazon charts of “Biographies of Professionals and Academics”. He will be discussing his journey, from having just 37p to selling his business for £100 million, and how his life has developed beyond this. He recently met Zoe Crowson, founder of the Phoebe Research Fund, to find out more about the charity. He said, “I am delighted to support The Phoebe Research Fund and am looking forward to the Garden Party in June”. Epidermolysis Bullosa is a life-limiting genetic condition which affects the third layer of collagen in the skin. All money raised by the Phoebe Research Fund goes directly to further research into this condition, the cure for which would see major advances for numerous other skin conditions, affecting thousands of people. The event will take place in the garden of The William Cecil in Stamford, starting at 5pm. Guests will be welcomed with a refreshing drink and will have a chance to network, before being seated and enjoying one of their renowned afternoon teas. Neville will then speak, and guests will have the opportunity to ask him questions. The evening will close with a raffle at 7pm. Tickets are £30 and are available through Eventbrite. For further information, contact Pilot Fish directly on 01778 309777.

IT is well known that the UK population is ageing, with more people living longer lives than previously. There are now over 15 million people aged 60 or over, making up 23 per cent of the UK population. And where possible, often taking into account financial circumstances and health, many choose to continue to live in their own home; safe and secure surroundings they have worked their lives for. But with getting older also comes the need for additional help; perhaps to aid with mobility and generally getting around. It may come as no surprise that rogue traders work in this area too, often targeting the most vulnerable in the community. Scams including cold callers claiming to be from their victim’s GP surgery, asking for an appointment to discuss the person’s mobility needs, are not uncommon. The calls are targeted because in many cases, it is believed that unscrupulous firms are buying databases containing details of patients and their medical / mobility needs. Quite often they arrange to meet the person either in their own home or at a designated place – and will persuade 12/01/2018 them to buy11:52 mobility aids (which could include bath lifts, scooters or reclining chairs) at inflated prices. More often than not, these aids are unnecessary, inappropriate and always expensive. 10:05 But as champions of the consumer, Safe Local Trades and Safe Local Services are able to offer recommended reliable trades/ companies, which elderly and less abled people can use with peace of mind. Our member skilled traders work across the PE area, and talk with customers and their families and loved ones about their needs and expectations; whether that be a low level shower room or wet room, ramps and rails, non slip flooring, hoists, door widening and much more. They will make an appointment to come and discuss your needs and deliver a first class service allowing the quality adaptions and modifications to help customers live a little more comfortable in their home. And did you know that as part of our Safe Local Services offering, we have signed specialist company Bentley Nursing Supplies - a retail outlet providing Mobility Aids, Nursing Equipment and Consumables and Continence Supplies to the general public. The company was formed in 1991, based on the need for a reliable supplier in the local area; offering free no obligation home or premises visit with demonstration and professional assessment on all equipment. So Remember: Never deal with cold callers – however persuasive they are. If you receive a call of this nature, always check with your GP surgery before agreeing to a visit. Likewise, any cold callers offering to carry out work on your property should be met with extreme caution. If you need a recommendation for a safe, approved local tradesperson, visit www.safelocaltrades.co.uk or call 0800 014 1832. Your Garden
June Gardening Tips What an awful start we had to May; let’s hope June starts with sunny, warm weather. Although we see it as a summer month, it can often disappoint. However, as we approach Midsummer’s Day, the nights are lighter which gives us more time in the garden, especially if you go out to work. I remember my father digging until it was too dark to see!
June is one of the busiest months of the year for the vegetable gardener: there are crops to plant, sow, and harvest, weeding, watering, feeding, getting rid of pests – the list seems never-ending. You really do need to keep on top of all these jobs to get the best out of your plot. Not only will your crops benefit from the longer sunnier days, so will the weeds! Regular hoeing is the best way to keep them at bay, or spreading mulch around the plants, or even growing through weed-suppressant membrane –good for squashes and courgettes.
• Cut down broad beans and peas just above the surface, and use for compost but leave the roots in the ground as a good source of nitrogen.
Garden pests can have a devastating effect on crops and, with the latest concerns over chemical pest control, an interesting alternative is using nematodes. Beneficial nematodes as pest control will attack soil-borne insect pests with no harmful effects on earthworms, plants, animals or humans, making it an environmentally friendly solution. You can use water-in nematodes against the following:• Slugs, ant nests, (dependent on soil temperature). • Leatherjackets, chafer grubs (in April and October, to coincide with vulnerable parts of their life cycles). • Carrot fly, cabbage root fly, cutworms, onion fly, sciarid fly, caterpillars, gooseberry sawfly, thrips and codling moth - (all can be attacked with a single product).
sure you harden them off before planting out in their final position.
• Thin out seedlings, and plant others in their final growing positions. • Earth up potatoes and, towards the end of the month, harvest earlies.
• Once you are sure that frosts are over, you can plant out the more tender crops such as aubergines, peppers, chillies, courgettes, marrows and squashes. •
Succession sow beetroot, salad crops, carrots and, later in the month, Florence fennel. Traditionally, Florence fennel is sown after the longest day, June 21st, as it is less likely to bolt: sowing in succession is a good idea. If the weather is dry, then water your seed drills well before sowing – this way the young plants will develop a good root system.
• Last chance to sow runner beans. • Brussels sprouts, leeks, sprouting broccoli and the last of the summer, autumn and red cabbages and the first of winter cabbages can also be planted. Protect carrots with insect-proof netting, and net brassicas to deter pigeons.
Happy planting!
There are plenty of sites on the Internet where you can find further information on nematodes and where to purchase them. Jobs to do:• Plant out vegetables that you have grown from seed, but make

Will & Probate Services
Your Holiday Will
by Nick Ash, Managing Director
People often ask me if our business is seasonal and they are quite surprised when I tell them that it is. The sad fact is that more people die during the winter months, hence we tend to be busier with probate. However, there is also a really interesting phenomenon that affects us during the summer and it is affectionately known as the ‘Holiday Will’.
Now statistically, air travel is one of the safest things you can do, but it always seems to remind us of our own mortality. The question of “What happens to my wealth if the plane falls out of the sky?” is the basic premise of all Holiday Wills. The ABTA Holiday Trends Report, 2018 suggests that more people than ever before are expected to take a foreign holiday this year. So, if you are one of them, then maybe it is your turn to make a Holiday Will.
Every year, as we move into July and August, we will get dozens of new clients approach us to get a will written or updated, and it will invariably be urgent; they need their new will in place before they go on holiday.
Of course you don’t have to be going on holiday to make your will. Remember that two thirds of UK adults don’t have an up-to-date, valid will. If it is time to make yours, call us today on 01778 382723 and we will get it done before you go on your holidays!

Wildlife on the Isle of Mull by Lydia Pinfold
I
f you ever want to visit a place that has a huge abundance of wildlife in magical landscapes (and you want to venture outside of the Deepings!) then I highly recommend the Isle of Mull. It is the second largest island of the Inner Hebrides, off Scotland’s west coast, where secret rivers and great waterfalls are dotted throughout the island; perfect for practising fast shutter speeds to freeze moving water, or placing your camera on a tripod and setting it to a long exposure for that smooth, milky effect.
basking sharks, common seals, bottlenose dolphins and the famous killer whale pod, known as the West Coast Community. In my opinion, the best animals that you can photograph are a few miles off Mull on the Isle of Lunga, where surprisingly tame puffins come to breed during the months of June and August, and will happily walk right up to your feet. I can guarantee this is a great place for all photographers, beginner to professional, young and old.
The island holds a host of flora and fauna all year round, and the summer months are probably the best months to see some of the most amazing moments in the natural world. Mull’s land mammals include the majestic red deer, the iconic highland cattle and the abundant, yet highly elusive, otter. I have yet to return to photograph these animals, but I have had encounters with other species on my previous visits, including the golden and white-tailed eagles, which I can only describe as a moment where I was absorbed by the enormous size and grace they displayed when soaring above my head. Besides the island holding a host of awe-inspiring landscapes and a variety of land mammals, the waters surrounding the Inner and Outer Hebrides are just as plentiful, with

Your Finances
So How Are Your Pensions and Investments Really Invested? - by Richard Ash, Director - Liberty Partnership Ltd
I
t’s a reasonable question but, more often than not, one that a lot of us never get around to answering. Many of us have pensions and ISAs, but these are not actually investments, they are ‘tax wrappers’. In other words, they determine how you are being taxed on the capital you have invested. So, you really need to start considering how and where your own money is being invested and by whom, and how much they are charging you for the privilege. Are they investing your capital into the stock market, bonds or property, or a combination of each? Are your holdings cautious, balanced or adventurous, and how do you feel about the risks that you are taking? What do your advisors advise in order to help minimise risk and, most importantly, do you understand that you are taking a risk? All of which are reasonable questions, ones which I asked a
client to consider this week as we discussed what they described as being their ‘small pension holdings’. Through discussion, it became clear that there was no plan, no strategy for investing, no consideration of how their money had been invested and the risks that they faced, should things go well or perhaps, start to go wrong. The client was greatly surprised to find that the ‘small holdings’ we were reviewing actually totalled over £80,000! There really is nothing unusual about this particular situation. Most of our clients are often surprised by the extent of their holdings, so we would ask you to take a moment, pause for thought, and consider your own planning. If you can really answer all of the above questions, we wish you well, (odds are you still should have a chat with us!). But if you cannot, perhaps now is the time to arrange a meeting with us, as we are certain we will be able to help!

In the Hot Seat
IN THE HOT SEAT This month, we are fortunate to have found a gap in Jenna Kane’s busy schedule, as she relaxes briefly in our “Hot Seat”. As if bringing up an almost-two-year-old wasn’t enough, Jenna manages to fill her days in the most energetic of ways. She has always had a passion for dance and fitness which she is lucky enough to pursue for a living. Owning, and having run for thirteen years a street dance school called Danzfusion in Peterborough, Jenna teaches children from five years old and upwards, which she absolutely loves! In connection with this, she is also a fitness instructor, teaching community classes and within gyms in Peterborough, teaching dance fitness, body combat, body balance and aqua fit. A third ‘string to her bow’ is that Jenna is now building a business from home with Herbalife Nutrition, helping people with their health and happiness. But, as she admits, her family is what matters the most: “I am a proud mum to a nearly-twoyear old who, with my husband, are my absolute world. I have many things I am proud of, but our son, Blake, is my biggest achievement!”
Jenna Kane
Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood? Ipswich. As a child, one of my fondest memories is going to dance classes every weekend. I started when I was five years old and went to the same school for eleven years. That was what I looked forward to every Saturday. Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why? In later life, my husband has been the biggest support for everything I have set out to do and has been behind me 100%. In my childhood, it would be my mum who has undoubtedly taught me everything that has led me to become the person I am today.
How would you describe yourself in only five words? Passionate, driven, positive, enthusiastic and energetic. If there was one thing which you could change about the Deepings, what would it be and why? A bigger community focus for young people and teens.
Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? The first person would be Ashley Banjo. He is such an inspiration, not only as a dancer, but as a leader

of a group who have been so successful. I love what he stands for in helping others and the projects he is always involved in. The other person is Jim Rohn. I’ve been doing a lot of personal development in this last year with his help, which has hugely helped me develop as a person. Jim Rohn is one of my favourite people to listen to for inspiration.

The Deepings Caravan Park – 25 Years Young and Only Getting Stronger
Summer is just around the corner so what better way to spend those sunny days than in the great outdoors? Better still, this little gem is right on our doorstep! Darren and Belinda have been owners and residents of The Deepings Caravan Park for sixteen years and they always ensure that their guests are greeted with a warm welcome and friendly staff, including their adorable pug and French bulldog. They take great pride in knowing that the park is a safe environment for families, and all of the guests are friendly to one another, making it a pleasant close-knit community; a home from home. They are also generous enough to offer a pensioner’s rate; Sunday-Thursday £8 per night. It’s no surprise why guests keep coming back, time and time again. Open March-October, the park provides accommodation for touring caravans, tents, motorhomes and static caravans (fifty weeks per year) with over one hundred and seventy pitches. There is a variety of facilities and activities on offer for guests, young and old, including a clubhouse, shop, kids’ play area, fishing, dog walking area and crazy golf. What’s more, the weekly evening entertainment is always popular amongst

guests; bingo on Thursdays, an act, music and karaoke on Saturdays and quiz night on Sundays. The park is also hosting Beerfest on Saturday August 4th. If glamping is more your style, the park has two fabulous glamping pods which are sure to take your fancy. They are available from £35 per night and sleep two adults and two children. Amenities include a TV with Freeview, heater, fridge, kettle and sofa bed. They have been incredibly popular ever since they opened in 2017, so if you want to book one for a night or two (or three!), it’s always best to phone in advance to avoid disappointment. Don’t worry though; there are plans to add another four pods to the park this year. There are also new developments being built at the site. In June this year, there will be a new toilet block with underfloor heating for tourers, and in 2019, a new leisure centre is due to open. A £500,000 investment has been set aside for caravan owners and their guests to enjoy the centre which will comprise of two bowling alleys, an indoor soft play area, arcade games and a restaurant. Phil’s Ride
Community Spirit on Two Wheels! – by Holly-Jean
P
hilip Beeton, aged 50, from Southery, Norfolk was a fiancé, a father, a brother, a son and an all-round family man. In 2015 he was killed in a road traffic collision by a 20-tonne lorry tipper, while on his way home from an average day at work. He is remembered and loved by many.
In his memory there is an annual charity event called ‘Phil’s Ride’ held in Southery. It was set up back in 2016 by his fiancee, Jane, and really good friend, David Fletcher. The idea was that people would show up on motorcycles for a 100-mile-long trip or bicycles to participate in a 24-mile round trip. This was to celebrate his life and raise money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance who attended to Phil on the day of the crash, and saved the life of his nephew, who was also in the accident. Riding two wheels was close to his heart as he and his fiancee used to ride together. On the motorbike route there is one stop, Blakeney. This is a place where Jane and Phil used to visit regularly. Every penny raised on the day goes straight to the East Anglian Air Ambulance. On the first year in 2016 they didn’t expect many. There was no ‘sign up’ and no sponsorship forms to fill out and so, they had to wait and see how many showed up on the day. They were astonished by the turnout from such a small village and £6278 was raised in just one day in memory of Phil. The ride starts outside the Olde White Bell pub in Southery, which was Phil’s local pub. Jane, Phil’s fiancee, says that there is a ‘sense of family’ at ‘the Bell’.

Shocked by how much money they initially raised, the event was scheduled again for 2017 and the target was to raise just 1p over the previous amount. The turnout was even bigger and the emotion that Phil’s family and friends felt as they saw all of the people show up to support the EAAA and remember Phil was overwhelming. This event shows off such a beautiful sense of community, camaraderie and family. Everyone got goose bumps and clapped as the bikers departed and when they came back, the music started, the raffle was called, and pride was felt by all. On this day in 2017, £12,155.22 was raised through buckets and sponsorships. I was lucky enough to be a part of this event and I couldn’t be happier to support such an amazing cause. I think just by reading this article you can sense how special this event is. It is so easy to get involved and without a doubt it is so worth it. This year will be the third year of Phil’s Ride and although the target amount is just 1p over 2017’s money raised, I think you’ll agree it deserves so much more. You never know when you might need the air ambulance, please get on your bike and get involved! Phil's Ride 2018 will be on Sunday, August 26th and is open to anyone on two wheels who would like to take part. The team, comprising family and friends of Phil, are hoping to repeat the success of 2017 and also encourage children to take part in their own course, mapped out on Southery playing field. Dubai on a Budget Here are a few ideas for those families looking for the glitz and glamour of Dubai, but who would prefer some walletfriendly options:
Top Beach Clubs and Seaside Facilities Beach clubs are the perfect place for families in the Dubai summer, offering pools, water activities, restaurants, lounges and play equipment. Riva Beach Club on Palm Jumeirah’s shoreline has a Mediterranean vibe, with a gentle beach and quality Italian restaurant, while Fairmont, The Palm will excite the little ones with its splash park, toddlers’ playhouse and climbing walls.
• The Bur Dubai Souks are the perfect place to enjoy the sights and smells of the traditional markets and, for only AED1, you can hop on a traditional, abra boat across the bustling creek. • Take a trip to one of the many public beaches which are free for all visitors. Kite Beach is perfect for families, with plenty of cafes and food trucks, as well as sun loungers and plenty of water sports.
Our top tip: Make sure you book ahead for the Sofitel Dubai, The Palm Resort and Spa which can get busy but it’s worth it for the 500m of private beach, six temperature-controlled pools and water sports.
• The Dubai Fountain puts on a dazzling display every thirty minutes from 6pm onwards. Visitors can watch for free, or why not take a seat at one of the many restaurants dotted around nearby?

History
Discovering . . . Old postcards
Rex Needle
Archive photograph of a rare Deeping St James postcard from 1910.
T
he changing face of our towns and villages in recent times is graphically recorded by the picture postcards produced for visitors which flooded the market during the Edwardian era. The first postcard was issued in England in 1870 but the standard postcard that we know today with a divided back to enable the address and a message to be written on the same side dates from 1899, becoming popular between 1902 and 1914, a period known as the Golden Age of postcards. Subjects featured included landmarks, scenic views, stage and screen celebrities, and as the coastal resorts became a popular tourist destination, they too began generating their own souvenir industry. As a result, picture postcards became big business, saucy subjects at the seaside with picturesque views for town and country and it is these topographical cards that are so highly collectable today because they have become an indicator of urban and rural change. The pictures on the cards were originally taken and developed by local photographers and printed out in batches for supply to the shops, the sale countrywide soon running into millions, a massive boost for Post Office revenue while their sale became so popular that a catchphrase was born, one still in use today

whenever anyone is going on holiday: “Don’t forget to send me a postcard!” The postcard pictured here is a typical example, specially taken for sale at Deeping St James, showing the limestone lock-up which has been a feature of the main street since 1819 with the parish church beyond, an imposing building dating back to the 12th century. The card was posted in the summer of 1910 by a lady named Beth who was holidaying in the village where she was staying with her married sister to her family in Manchester. “Sis and George have a quaint and delightful cottage overlooking the river”, she wrote, “and so we go walking most days, much more pleasant than the dreary streets of home. Back on Saturday afternoon.” Many more picture postcards survive showing the Deepings the way they were and most now fetch high prices either on the Internet or in specialist auctions but thousands more still exist in old albums which lie forgotten in attics and storerooms yet contain a wealth of material for those collectors who pursue the hobby known as deltiology. Rarer cards featuring topographical features that have now disappeared fetch high prices and so it is worth taking a look through the family records to find out if you have been sitting on a small fortune. j u ne 2 0 1 8

School News Baston C. of E. Primary School At the end of March, our Year 6 pupils went on a field trip to Willow Tree Fen, which is only approximately three miles from school. They compared the changes in the landscape from our previous visit in the autumn term. They also looked at the habitats of the animals that live there and how they have also changed over recent months. In the afternoon, they cooked marshmallows and peaches on the fire pit; did a little river dipping; and built dens in the forest area. This facility is open to the public and has so much to offer for everyone to learn about our local environment. On May 1st, we celebrated our musical talent by putting on a show for parents of all of our children who have peripatetic music lessons in school. All of Key Stage 2 watched the performance, and pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 played the drums, guitar, clarinet, flute, ukulele, keyboards, piano, cornet, whilst our vocalists sang their hearts out! A truly magnificent performance was put on by all concerned.
Market Deeping Community Primary School Spring Chicks Children at Market Deeping Community Primary School have been excitedly watching the hatching and growing of chicks. As part of their topic about ‘Growing’, the Reception children have had an incubator and fifteen eggs from the Happy Chick Company in school. However, it has not just been the younger children who are keenly observing their progress, as Year 6 pupils (pictured) have been keen not to miss out on the fun. The chicks are living and growing in the library, and a webcam is providing a live feed to their comings and goings. Once they have grown too big for their pens in school, they will go off to welcoming homes and free-range farming. The Reception children have also enjoyed a visit to Moor Farm to learn about young animals. Feeding the lambs was a particularly popular activity. The chicks have been coming every other year to the school, and Year 6 will miss them when they move onto secondary schools in September. For the time being, they are contentedly overseeing their welfare and observing their behaviour. Ruby, a Year 6 pupil, commented, “It will be our last year watching chicks hatch, which is a bit sad. It is lovely to see how they crack out of their shells and get stronger and stronger. It all happens very quickly, so it is good that we can check up on them during the day.”
Linchfield Community Primary School The summer term has got off to a blistering start in Year 5! To ‘launch’ our “Space” topic, we visited the Space Centre in Leicester, and the children had an exciting time exploring the variety of interactive displays, as well as taking part in a rocket-making workshop and a 3-D planetarium experience. You could say it was ‘out of this world’! We also had the privilege of a visit from a former international 48

swimmer. Sophie Allen, who hails from Lincoln, represented Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympics in the 200-metre individual medley. She won a silver medal in that same event during the 2012 European Championships. The children had the chance to ask her questions and they gave her a proper grilling! The children were thoroughly inspired by Sophie and, who knows, the seeds of a future Olympic champion may just have been sown! june 2018

S
t. Guthlac’s Church is the only church in Market Deeping itself, although we are active members of Churches Together in the Deepings. We are the tallest and oldest building in the town and can’t be missed if you come into Deeping from either Bourne or Peterborough, as we are situated on the “old” A15, known as Church Street, as you enter from the north or from the south.
Our Sunday Services are: 8am - Said Eucharist; 10am - Parish Eucharist; and twice a month, (second and fourth Sundays) Evensong at 6pm. During our 10am Service, we have a Sunday School that meets in the Green School opposite the Church from 9.50 am, but on the fourth Sunday of each month, we all meet together in Church for an All-Age Eucharist. We also hold a mid-week, Said Eucharist at 10.30am on Wednesdays. As a Church of England Church, we celebrate all the major festivals, and the times for these can be found on our website: www.stguthlacs.org.uk, where you will also find information about all the activities in which we are involved.

striving to raise between £60K and £70k. We are currently holding many different fund-raising activities to achieve our goal, as well as applying for grants and requesting donations, so if you can help, please support the events, contact us with a donation, or ask how you can get involved! We aim to make sure that the worshipping life of our church continues for the next 130 years, (at least!), as our organ is central to that, and supports our active and strong choir. We have a strong link with our church school which means we have many young families attending our church. However, we are an inclusive church serving everyone, and pride ourselves on giving a warm welcome to everyone who enters the church. and always enjoy sharing in celebrating Wedding and Baptisms. Community News Rose Lodge care Home celebrate Queen’s Birthday with a ‘right royal knees up’ on ‘Care Home Open Day’! Rose Lodge Care Home in Market Deeping enjoyed a fantastic day on ‘Care Home Open Day’, (Saturday April 21st). Residents and staff welcomed visitors and families throughout the day; in the afternoon everyone enjoyed a British themed tea party to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday. The idea behind ‘Care Home Open Day’ is to encourage local people to visit care homes in their community and to work together to develop better relationships. This important connection is something that Rose Lodge Care Home has long since nurtured; the home is making a meaningful contribution to people in the local community in Market Deeping, with regular visits to the Oddfellows group and many other community groups. ‘Care Home Open Day’

School News Langtoft Primary are Volleyball County Champions A team of four Year 6 children from Langtoft Primary School are celebrating their victory as County Champions in volleyball. Louis Durham, Oliver Feetham, Thomas Preston and Leo Sangiorgio won the South East Lincolnshire round of the competition, back in November 2017. The boys and their headteacher, Mr. McCullough, travelled to the University of Lincoln recently to compete in the County Championships, representing this area of the county. Playing against four other teams from different parts of the county was an exciting opportunity for the team. As well as enjoying the game, the boys enjoyed a tour of The Sports Centre at the Brayford Campus.

Huge congratulations to all those involved at Langtoft’.
The boys have attended an after-school club along with twenty other children to learn the rules and tactics of playing the game. ‘The great thing about volleyball,’ suggests Mr McCullough, ‘is that children of all abilities can enjoy the game. The rules are simple to follow and so children can focus on improving their skills of hand-eye co-ordination and

Why learn an instrument? on more areas of your life than you’d imagine. It can be a lot more than just a way to pass the time!
To certain people, music comes naturally. For others, it’s like an alien language. It’s difficult to find the way to start understanding it, but like every skill, it just takes the right approach to get over that first hurdle. But why put the time in to get past that initial frustrating, confusing first step? Well, there are many benefits to learning an instrument that some people may not realise. Firstly, if you’ve never played any instruments before, it’s a lot of fun and a wonderful hobby to use your time creatively. Secondly, it’s a great way to express yourself. If you have something to say, be it personal, political, or even educational, you can communicate your thoughts through writing and performing music. It’s also a brilliant way to meet people and form close relationships. When you play music with others, you’re relying heavily on understanding each other to make sure the music sounds good and, as a result, you’ll begin to find your communication skills grow, helping with any social anxieties you may have. As well as all of this, it can help with cognitive functions, such as memory, language and some studies have even shown it to assist with recovering from brain injuries! This is for adults and children alike, and getting your child to start learning an instrument at a young age can make a huge difference to their ability to learn and help develop their brain. We’re not claiming that, after one lesson, you’ll be able to join Mensa, or selling out the Albert Hall, but regardless of one’s ability, learning an instrument can have a huge positive impact

About Breve Music Since 1989, Breve Music has been part of Peterborough’s Rivergate Arcade. The company started out as a dedicated organ shop, Peterborough Organ Centre, until 2014, when a slight change of location and store revival took place. Since the music scene had begun to move away from organs at this point, the company branched out to digital pianos, keyboards, synthesisers, electric and acoustic guitars, drum kits and even professional stage and studio equipment. Along with the store becoming larger and the range of instruments becoming wider, the company rebranded as Breve Music. Still within the Rivergate complex, the store is now outside the arcade at the very front of ASDA car park. As well as being a music shop to get all of your instruments and accessories, Breve also has a music school on-site so you can learn how to use your instruments too! Regardless of where you bought your instrument, Breve offers a range of music lessons on popular instruments. They can help with piano, guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and ukulele. They also teach music theory and hold monthly jam sessions for students. Especially for you, the Discovering Deeping magazine reader, we have a fantastic offer for your initial introduction to music lessons. Contact Breve Music today and quote the code: DISC4.

The Perils of Pet Poisoning – Advice from Trophy Pet Food Ltd
Owning a dog is mostly fun and stressfree. However, when things go wrong, what should you do? How do you even know if it’s an emergency? Poisonings are common, unfortunately, and depend on the substance ingested. Symptoms can range from lethargy to vomiting, abdominal pain to hyperactivity, behaviour changes to bleeding gums, and even collapse. Some toxic substances which your dog might have swallowed include rat or slug bait, anti-freeze, chocolate, grapes, raisins, fruitcake, human medications, xylitol (an artificial sweetener found in some chewing gum), and onions. Never ‘wait and see’ with poisoning, and always take any packaging with you to your vet. He or she may make your dog vomit, if appropriate, and give your dog the necessary treatment, including
possible hospitalisation. Never try and make your dog sick at home unless asked to do so by your vet. This can sometimes cause further complications and make your dog worse. The summer months often bring insect stings and bites, which, although sore, are rarely emergencies, unless anaphylactic shock is observed, (look for collapse, breathing difficulties, throat swelling), or your dog is bitten or stung a lot. Playful puppies often eat bees, and most stings can be dealt with easily, but if your dog becomes unwell you should consider calling your vet. Adder bites are common in hot weather too, complete with a tell-tale double puncture wound, typically on your dog’s nose or face, so watch out for these. If you suspect a bite, take your dog to your
local veterinary practice and remember to call ahead first, if possible. Lyme disease - Not just a walk in the park
T
ick season is upon us and I am once again urged to remind dog walkers of Lyme disease as a potential problem. Lyme disease has been steadily gaining ground in the UK since the late 1980s. Currently there are up to 2000 confirmed human cases a year in England and Wales Most new cases are reported in the summer months of July and August but peak infection occurs in spring when tick numbers are at their highest. We now know that clinical disease occurs in dogs, people, horses, cattle and cats while small wildlife mammals and birds serve as reservoirs of the causative agent, a spiral shaped bacterium, called Borrelia burgdorferi. This organism is harboured in the deer tick and when the tick attaches to skin the bacteria are secreted in the bloodstream of mammals via the tick’s saliva. There is little danger of infection during the first 12 hours of tick feeding but beyond this point, the risk of infection increases exponentially. In contrast to the human disease where neurological signs such as facial palsy are common, dogs primarily get osteoarthritis about two to five months post exposure. Initially, you may not see a skin rash as with the human infection, but dogs will suffer from lethargy, fever and lack of appetite a few days after tick attachment and painful swollen joints may soon follow. Lameness may be intermittent but can last several weeks. Luckily the proportion of infected dogs that develop clinical disease is far smaller than it is for humans. Recent studies in the US have shown that only 5% of those dogs exposed develop the disease. Having said this there may be an age, breed
and genetic predisposition to the susceptibility of contracting Lyme disease, but little is known about these factors yet So, what are the criteria for diagnosing Lyme disease. A possible history of exposure to tick bites is a big clue, however this may not always be so easy, since many ticks can fall off undetected. Clinical signs such as lethargy, fever and lameness especially following exposure to ticks and a positive blood test to detect antibodies to Lyme disease is sufficient to confirm diagnosis. Treatment involves antibiotics for a few weeks. Fortunately, in dogs, unlike humans, chronic Lyme disease is also responsive to antibiotics and so a successful outcome is likely. The best solution to the Lyme problem is prevention. Prevention of prolonged tick attachment cannot be emphasised enough. You can used tick collars, tools for removing ticks and antiparasitic topical treatments as well as flea and tick tablets. Just ask your vet for more details. Once removed a tick should always be destroyed promptly. People walking dogs in wooded areas or heath lands should wear long trousers and socks. Always inspect your dog for ticks immediately after a walk. Lyme disease is now the most common arthropod borne disease of humans in the US and it is gaining recognition here as a significant disease. Awareness of it is of crucial importance to containing this debilitating disease. So, enjoy you walks as exercising dogs has great health benefits and try not to let a few ticks put you off.
