Introduction

Welcome to Your August Issue. I can’t believe the amazing weather we’ve had recently. Yes, the heat may be unbearable at times, but it’ll be gone before we know it, so try to enjoy it while you can. Summer is only here for a few more months, so to make the most of it, why not check out our August gardening tips on page 32? Or, if you’re struggling to think of ideas to keep the children occupied in the summer holidays, our activity ideas for days out on page 4-5 are here to the rescue. We’re also hosting the Deeping Seaside Hunt, on pages 39-42 which will certainly be lots of fun to be had with the little ones on days when you don’t fancy travelling far. I’m so pleased to say that this is one of our biggest issues this year, so sit back, relax and enjoy your read in the sunshine!

School is officially out for summer. It’s such a positive time of year and it’s certainly my favourite season. Speaking of positivity, I’d like to say huge congratulations to those who took part in Empire Gym’s Insane 7 challenge in support of Sue Ryder, including one of my close family members, Emma Bates. You are all an inspiration, and your efforts have contributed massively to an amazing cause. Well done! If you’re looking to be inspired on what to do or where to go this sunny season, our recipe for pork and peach kebabs on page 61 or the Deepings Lions “World Famous Duck Race” on page 25 may tickle your fancy! We hope you enjoy reading this jam-packed issue. Happy summer!

Empire Gym and Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice 11,565 Reasons to Celebrate! by Matt Weston

One year ago, we at Empire Gym visited Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough.

In the last twelve months, Empire Gym members and customers have smashed our original £4,000 target.

It was so moving, because it is an example of absolute brilliance:

So we set a new £10,000 target and guess what! ... we have smashed that too, through events including coffee mornings and raffles, fancy dress circuit training classes, rowing marathons and ‘dancing clubbathons’, (not forgetting the 50p that goes directly to Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall, whenever a class is paid for by a non-member or for a Sunday Circuits class.)

Brilliant in its people - Talented, passionate, professional, purposeful, determined. Brilliant in its facilities - Clean, bright, modern, technologically advanced. Like the finest spa with beautiful tended gardens, in which people walk their dogs and sit and read and relax in the sun with their families, in which children can play in the sunshine. But, most importantly... Brilliant in what it stands for and the example it sets. First and foremost, it ensures absolute dignity and respect for people and their families, allowing the focus to be on love, calmness, reflection and contemplation at the end of life.

Our Most recent event was the EMPIRE INSANE 7, where seven classes in just seven hours raised an incredible £3823.31!!! That’s £546.18 an hour! What a magnificent contribution from those eighteen dedicated participants, although it was just typical of the effervescent and dedicated spirit of Empire Gym members. The seven classes, IN A ROW, were: • Empire HIIT Circuits

And then in proving that ‘You Can!’ Through talent, they build relationships. Through passion, they raise the profile of their organisation. Through professionalism, they offer support and a framework that allows the surrounding community to work with them to do remarkable things to raise money. Through giving people the privilege of being a part of it, allowing people to visit and see, to listen and hear, to experience and feel. And to wear the Sue Ryder logo with pride during varied and inspirational fundraising endeavours, and to represent something that is a true cornerstone of the Greater Peterborough community, indeed, a part of its history.

• Metafit, (High Intensity Body Weight Training) • Boxercise • Les Mills RPM – Indoor Cycling • Les Mills SPRINT – High Intensity Indoor Cycling • Les Mills Bodypump, (Lifting and pushing of barbells using upper and lower body) • Les Mills Bodybalance, (An infusion of Yoga, Tai-Chi and Pilates) It was a high octane, energy-sapping, but extremely fun and successful day. This then brings our first year’s total for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice to a massive £11,565.34 (or £963.77 every month for the last year!) This translates in real terms to the following; • It could fund a hospice nurse for three months. • It could also pay for a syringe driver to give constant pain relief to patients, (crucial for end of life care).

• It could then fund twenty-nine sessions of bereavement counselling for people struggling to cope with the loss of a loved one.

about fundraising, they should contact Senior Community Fundraiser, Joely Garner, on 01733 225 943 or e-mail joely. garner@sueryder.org

AND it would buy six memory boxes for children, which store sentimental trinkets inside to help them cope with their loss.

At Empire, we are proud to be more involved and engaged with the local community than ever before.

Very, very significant indeed, we’re sure you’d agree. This, of course, doesn’t end here though. Our relationship with Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall will continue indefinitely, with our next milestone being £20,000. We encourage people to contact the hospice, and indeed to visit, to see exactly how breathtaking the organisation is. We are also delighted to hear that more and more businesses, sporting groups and organisations in the Deepings are choosing Thorpe Hall as their charity partner. If people do want to speak to Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall

Empire is for everyone. Come and be part of it!

We are delighted to say, Empire has again been nominated in the Fitness and Wellbeing category of the Deepings Business awards. If you feel compelled to vote for us so that we can defend our 2016/17 title, please go to the Deepings Business Club website where you will find details of how to vote. Does your Back Pain Always Seem to Reoccur? asks Jake Somers BTEC Dip ST, Remedial and Sports Massage therapist

M

any of us will have the misfortune of suffering from lower back pain at some point in our lives. It is very common and can occur very suddenly or in a more subtle manner. It is, however, always inconvenient, badly timed and can never go fast enough. It is also something I see professionally most days in practice.

One thing that has become clear after assessing multiple patients with the same problem is that a large majority will have sustained a back injury at some point earlier in life. Many felt that they had recovered from the original injury, but there is often a little stiffness and restricted movement that remains, (often assumed as the new ‘normal’ or being age-related).A common cause of this is from the adhesions, or in other words internal scar tissue, which can be found at the site of the injury. These adhesions can ‘bind’ the various layers of muscle, fat and connective tissue which, in turn, limits their natural elasticity and smooth movements causing varying degrees of limited movement and, in many cases, pain. Research has shown that these adhesions are typically weaker, less elastic, prone to re-injury, and are more sensitive to pressure than healthy tissue. The result could be a reduced tolerance to some of life’s everyday activities and, in time, more persistent pain that lingers years after the initial injury.

The good news is that, in many cases, these adhesions can be broken down and healthy function restored to the injured area. Recovery time will vary of course, for example, depending on the amount of adhesions and how long ago the initial injury occurred. In fact, some professionals believe that adhesions are the root of the majority of physical imbalances. Working on the body to address adhesions early in their development can help minimise any of the preceding secondary problems. Sports massage can be an effective way to tackle this problem and restore healthy muscle function. If you would like to know more, or to see if I could help fix your recurring problem, then please contact the Wellhead Practice for more details. I practise here, three days a week, offering thirty or sixty minute consultations.

TIPS AND TRICKS - LIPSTICKS by Rebecca Jones

H

ello, my name is Rebecca. I love all things make up. I have been a make up artist for over 12 years now. My clients are so important to me and their happiness comes first. When choosing a lip colour take into consideration the size of your lip area. I suggest a darker lip colour on fuller lips. For thinner lips opt for a lighter shade with a matching lipliner. When applying lipliner make sure you cover the entire lip area. This will help create a lasting effect for the lipstick. Also warmer colours can give a fuller plumper look.

Flawless Body

- Achieving Body Confidence “We want people to feel great,” says Neeta. “Our philosophy is to provide bespoke solutions for bespoke bodies and promote body confidence. Every ‘body’ is unique and to get the best results, you need to have the best tools for the job”. Opening the clinic in May 2017, and investing a six figure sum in Lumenis laser and 3D Lipo equipment has enabled the business to offer laser hair removal, face and body treatments, tattoo removal, laser skin resurfacing and vaginal rejuvenation too. “Our Lumenis laser is based on new diode technology, not old IPL technology. That means it’s not a multipurpose laser, but does just one job hair removal - very well,” says Neeta. “Likewise, our 3D Lipo Ultimate device is cutting edge, providing a number of treatments to help with weight loss, reducing pockets of fat, overall circumference reduction, skin tightening and cellulite reduction with proven results.” “The machine can offer fat freezing, cavitation, radio frequency skin tightening and body HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound) - the latest non-invasive ultrasound fat removal technology for virtually painfree inch loss.” “Our facial treatments range from

14

D I S C O V E R I N G

conventional microdermabrasion, through infused mesotheraphy with LED phototherapy, to even skin pigmentation and specialised Geneo+powered facials, that oxygenate the blood, stimulating cell renewal, followed by Tri-Pollar radio frequency to provide brighter, healthier looking skin. The results we have achieved to date have been outstanding.” The jewel in the crown however is the HIFU treatment for the face, known as the ‘non-surgical face lift’. Most of the clients Neeta has had for this service have been referrals, as the results have been so good. New additions this year have been tattoo removal, (using a unique Q-Switch laser) and vaginal rejuvenation, to treat incontinence and laxity. “Listening to clients, their needs and what is stopping them living and enjoying life is a big part of the job and the new equipment has been a direct result of this.” “We want people to feel good about themselves, and we want everyone to feel welcome at Flawless Body.

T H E

We’re not interested in providing just standard treatments, but in building a relationship based on absolute trust and visible results for our clients, via bespoke procedures to ensure that our reputation in the town and surrounding area remains as wellrespected as it is.” “We’ve invested in the best equipment for the best outcomes for our clients and we provide the most skilled practitioners in our seven-strong team to ensure that the experience, the treatments, and the results you enjoy following a visit to Flawless Body are the very best that they can be,” says Neeta.

Back to School Already? Time for New Shoes! Well, it’s that time of year again to start thinking about shoes to go back to school! At Zebedee Shoes, we spend months prior to this choosing the right quality and style of shoes that fit well, are comfortable and durable enough to handle the day-today wear-and-tear, as our children put them through their paces. Remember also that your child’s feet are in their school shoes five days a week, so the more natural materials that are used the better, as feet can breathe and stay healthy. It can also be very helpful when you come for a fitting to either bring your old school shoes or know what size you have been wearing, because when we size you up we can then tell how much growth has been going on, and we can fit appropriately for the next school year. We cater for children from Reception right up to adult size 12, providing a range of stock, from trendy through to traditional and more formal styles for the older senior school students. We also stock shoes to fit orthotics. All of our staff are trained to a very high standard of fitting, so if a fit isn’t right, we won’t let it go out of the shop. We

strive to get the best fit for your child and if we don’t have the right shoes in stock, we can normally order them for you within a few days. Our customer service is something we pride ourselves on and hope that everyone who visits our shop has a pleasant experience.

e know the saying that goes, “Less is more”, but let’s be honest. Sometimes, two is just plain better than one. When it comes to working out, having a friend along for the ride can be beneficial. You can get a serious workout without being serious – it’s okay to have fun. In fact, the more fun your workouts are, the more you’re going to look forward to, and be committed to them over the long-term. There’s absolutely no doubt that the right friend to exercise with can make your workouts more fun. Being able to laugh, encourage and motivate will make them much more enjoyable. Here are some of the benefits of working out with a friend: Fewer skipped workouts Scheduling a gym session with a friend helps hold you accountable for getting your workout in.

Meeting someone to exercise with not only motivates you to show up, but to work hard as well. Push yourself further Exercising with another person pushes you to do your workout and do it to the best of your ability. A bit of friendly banter and encouragement can mean you get a little bit more out of your exercise session. Markey’s Wee Barber Shop #2 – Bourne’s Booming Barber Expands into Market Deeping! The first “Markey’s Wee Barber Shop” was opened at 37 West Street, Bourne, six and a half years ago by Lee Markey who, after twenty-six years in the trade, wanted to offer high quality haircuts in a fresh and modern environment. With tremendous support from his staff - Victoria, Sarah, and Lindsey - the business has built a terrific customer base in Bourne and the surrounding towns and villages. Markey was often asked by customers when he would be opening a shop in the Deepings so that they wouldn’t have to travel to Bourne, so, when the opportunity presented itself, he moved into his new premises at 19 High Street, Market Deeping.

Property News

August News from Newton Fallowell

by Jonathan Brewell, Managing Partner, Newton Fallowell

A

s I write this, many people across the Deepings will be enjoying the recent spell of sunshine and it looks set to continue with the forecast for the next few days nearing 30 degrees! You never know what the British weather will bring next, so my recommendation is to make the most of it while you can. With temperatures rising in the office, (and no air conditioning!) the opportunity to get out and

photograph properties, with gardens in full bloom and blue skies in the background, is welcomed. At this time of year, properties really are looking at their best and we are proud of our photography, having invested in quality equipment and tuition to help us capture the best images of your home. Making your property look great and helping it to reach as many buyers as possible is something at which I think we excel.

While I am on the subject of reaching buyers, we would like to welcome Nicola Hebblewhite and Vicki Spinner to the Newton Fallowell family, having recently opened an office in Werrington, pushing the Newton Fallowell name into Cambridgeshire. This now takes us to over forty offices and will enable us to reach and help more buyers and sellers across the region. In other news, Market Deeping Lettings has had an exceptional month with multiple new properties being advertised and tenants moved in, all in the same month. Our portfolio of managed properties keeps growing, and most of this has come by way of recommendation, so we would also like to take this opportunity to thank our current landlords for their recommendation. The staff in our Deeping office are all trained in both sales and lettings, meaning they have a full understanding of both disciplines so, if you are thinking of selling or letting, you know who to contact first! Oh and one last question: Have you built your raft? Don’t forget the Deepings Raft Race on Sunday, August 5th. This is always a fun-filled day with proceeds supporting the community and local charities.

School News Baston C. E. Primary School Recently we have celebrated sports week, where we had a variety of new sports, including zorbs, footdarts, ultimate frisbee, fencing, streetdance, cheerleading, tennis, and Bollywood dancing, and we all had a great time throughout the week. We also held our sports day during this week, where all children could participate in all races. We are extremely grateful to our PTA who help to fund the vast majority of these activities. Our Year 6 pupils travelled to Shropshire straight after half-term, where they stayed at Condover Hall. The sun shone for most of the week and they experienced being independent and organised for all activities. Many of the children conquered their fear of heights whilst taking part in abseiling, climbing, ariel trek and fan descender. Team building activities included raft building, buggy building and dance mania. Everyone was exhausted on the return journey home; however, the trip was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Years 6 and 4 have been celebrating Christianity by attending the Lincoln Cathedral Leavers’ Service and the Churches Together Festival in Stamford. Year 6 learnt about birds of prey and how to ‘bell ring’ during their session in Lincoln. Our PTA has also funded a trip from the Hobgoblin Theatre Company where Key Stage 1 watched Little Red Riding Hood, and Key Stage 2 watched a performance about the Tudors, followed by drama workshops.

Linchfield C.P. School Linchfield has been going sports crazy! On July 3rd, the whole school took part in a sporting extravaganza, which involved every child taking part in a range of sporting activities – dribbling footballs, shooting hoops, egg and spoon relays, speed bouncing, to name just a few. The day was a huge success, with every child engaged and active throughout, cheered on by a crowd of enthusiastic supporters. One of the activities was to learn some dance moves to “I’m Ready for This” by Jess Glynne – expertly choreographed and directed by the incomparable Mrs Wills! – and the closing ceremony culminated in the whole school performing the dance to a crowd of appreciative parents and carers. What a fantastic moment! And if that wasn’t enough, on July 10th, a more traditional sports day took place, with the whole of Key Stage 2 taking to the field to compete in track and field events. A school spokesperson said, “Both events were a phenomenal success: the children thoroughly enjoyed the different nature of the two events; they displayed fantastic determination, desire and sportsmanship throughout, and showed just why Linchfield is the place to be.”

A number of students have been practising throughout the year to prepare for the annual Rock Band Tour which is organised through our cluster by our peripatetic music teachers. They ‘toured’ the local schools on a bus, like a real band and performed to large audiences too. 22

Your Health

New School, New Term by Nicole Woodcock, Hummingbird Hypnotherapy

W

ith the end of yet another school year it’s hard to believe where time goes. I remember my mum saying to me, “Wait till they start school, time flies.” She wasn’t wrong! For some, a new school/ new class/ new teacher can be really exciting and seem like a new adventure. Unfortunately, for those who struggle with transition and new things, it can be really difficult to transition to something new, especially if it’s a new pattern or routine. Our brain can get quite comfortable; it likes routine and that’s where things can at times become difficult. If a child is already worrying or has anxiety in their life, a slight change can act as a trigger and really increase their stress levels, making new things really difficult to achieve or even think about.

When we worry a lot and create negative thought patterns, our anxiety increases and we begin to respond primitively with anxiety, anger or depression, or a combination of all three. Once we get into this phase we lose intellectual control and so become unable to make a proper assessment of any situation until we calm down and relax. Once we relax we can access the part of the brain that holds all of our knowledge and information, the part that makes us realise we probably overreacted and that everything is ok. If you have a child who has concerns about changing schools or going up to a new class, please get in touch and book an initial consultation, and learn more abut how the brain works and how hypnotherapy can help. Positive thoughts!

Travel

Advice for First-Time Cruisers

Clare Lockett

Travel Counsellor

How long? You might not want to risk spending fourteen days at sea, so plenty of cruise lines now offer two to five night itineraries, for example Cunard’s city break cruises, departing from Southampton and heading to Hamburg, Amsterdam, Bruges and more. We recommend a five to seven night cruise, so you can really get a feel for cruising.

happy with set dining times or prefer to eat whenever you want? Quite a few lines offer drinks packages and often the earlier you book, the better the deal you get, so the drinks packages might be included for free. Keeping busy on board One of the best things about cruise ships is the range of activities. If it’s a family with small children, then look towards Norwegian/MSC/ Disney and Royal Caribbean, whose ships include family-focused pursuits, with ice skating, rock climbing and water parks, to name a few. If it’s a couple, then look at Celebrity Cruises or Holland America, for example, for outdoor games and activities, demonstrations from the chefs and crew, spa treatments, dancing and films. On a cruise, you really can be as active as you want … or simply sit back, relax, and let the waiter bring you another cocktail!

What kind of atmosphere? Some cruises still have the formal dress codes which are strictly adhered to, so beware! Many others have a ‘Captain’s Night’, which is still smart, but not as formal or strict, so you can enjoy getting dressed up, but don’t have to worry too much. We always advise packing appropriate clothing and footwear for on and off board. Remember, you will be exploring your ports of call. What about where you sleep? Think about how much time you’ll be spending in your cabin, and whether you will find it good value for money. If you are looking simply for the best deal, then this is always an inside cabin. But our advice for any first-timer is to go for at least an ocean view and, if possible, a balcony. Once you’ve sailed with the sea air in your cabin and enjoyed breakfast or pre-dinner drinks on the balcony, there’s no going back! Plus, the pool-side can get busy, so it’s nice to have your own sanctuary of space.

It’s the same story by night. From a quiet piano bar, where you can enjoy a cocktail, reading a book, if that’s what you prefer, to cabaret shows by brilliant entertainers and guest artists who are often flown in for one night. You could take part in family games shows like ‘Deal or No Deal’ or ‘Play Your Cards Right’, and it’s usually rounded off by a late night disco. Tipping Tipping can be confusing, especially for first-timers. A lot of the American-owned ships now offer a “pre-paid gratuities” option and if you don’t want to pay this, you have to speak to the purser within a day of boarding. Many customers still express their wishes to pay the staff themselves who they feel have gone above and beyond to serve them, so that’s an occasion when you would need to avoid the pre-paid gratuities.

And what you like to eat? Food is a massive part of cruising, of course. Would you be

Rob Rippon – Local Tradesman, Quality Service Local tradesman, Rob Rippon talks fondly of his upbringing in West Deeping in a village community where everyone was friendly and supportive. For the last twenty-four years, he has been serving the Deepings community, offering electrical installations and home improvements. Nowadays, his main focus is on kitchen and bathroom installations, whilst also offering replacement kitchen doors, made to measure, to refresh and renew tired old kitchens.

His career began in 1985 as an apprentice electrician to Dennis Ireland of M. I. Electrical , working in the homes of people all around the Market Deeping area. He has memories of the new houses that were built on Dixons Road and The Granary in the late 1980s. The best advice he received from his father was to get a trade behind him and then do what he enjoyed, which was woodwork and carpentry. Rob declares, “I am fortunate to have worked with some very skilled tradesmen over the years and have used the skills and knowledge that they passed on to me to be able to produce the high quality kitchen and bathroom installations that I can offer.” As a member of ‘Safe Local Trades’, he is understandably proud of his high feedback rating.

BEFORE

Rob has now been a Langtoft resident for nearly thirty years, with his wife, two of his four sons and “two nutty dogs”. With the same attitude from his earlier years in nearby West Deeping, Rob explains, “I am always available to help out the villagers if I can with any problems, even being called out late at night to frozen pipes and floods.”

The Deepings School at The Ryman National Enterprise Challenge On Wednesday July 4th, The Deepings School took a group of five Year 9 students to the finals of the prestigious Ryman National Enterprise Challenge, (the UK’s largest schools’ enterprise education competition), at the Telford International Centre. The Ryman National Enterprise Challenge is part of the Inspirational Learning Group, whose aim is to provide innovative and enterprising off-timetable events for schools, colleges and

universities; engaging, inspiring and motivating students through a range of activities. The Challenge has attracted over 450 schools and 200,000 students since its first challenge was launched, back in 2013. The Deepings School competed against 160 schools in this year’s challenge and the team, made up of Ruby Gray, Ruby Carlisle, Thomas Finbow, Evie Alexander, Louis Allen, although a little nervous, were brimming with anticipation and excitement as they joined students from other competing schools at the finals. Challenge Ambassador, Theo Paphitis, entrepreneur, retail magnate and well- known for his

appearances on Dragons’ Den, said, “Some of the best pitches I’ve seen on The Ryman National Enterprise Challenge over the years have been even better than the ones I saw in the Den!” Linda Taylor, Careers Leader from The Deepings School said, “The finals day saw our team demonstrate resilience and teamwork as they successfully rose to the challenge, preparing a range of display and marketing materials and even using sign language in their presentation! We would like to extend our thanks to our co-sponsors, British Sugar, who helped us to fund the initial activity day in school and also came along to support our team.”

Rotarians Donate Training Aid to Deepings First Responders Deepings First Responders have a new training aid that could help save the lives of young children, a Baby Anne CPR doll, which has been donated to the First Responders group by the Rotary Club of the Deepings.

President of the Rotary Club of the Deepings, Alan Kendrick, presents the Baby Anne CPR doll to Russell Handley of Deepings First Responders.

The Baby Anne manikin was developed to provide effective training in infant CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). Among its many features, it offers realistic chest compressions and chest rise to allow trainees to learn proper CPR techniques, as well as how to clear obstructed airways. The Baby Anne was formally presented to the First Responders by Rotary President, Alan Kendrick. It is already proving a very useful training resource. Helen Bembridge, Co-ordinator for Deepings First Responders, said: “We have never had this

First Responder, Rachel Angell, on duty at the Rose & Sweet Pea Show. model before and she will be very useful to the group. We have already had an interesting and informative training session with her, and she has been taken out to advise a group of mothers how to deal with a choking child.”

Deepings Swimming Club Strikes Gold in Eindhoven Anglian Water for the second consecutive year.

A jubilant Deepings Swimming Club won nineteen medals at the Netherlands Invitational Meet in Eindhoven after a weekend of outstanding performances. The squad of twenty-three competed against swimmers from fifty-six clubs, representing eight countries. Six swimmers medalled, winning four golds, eight silvers and seven bronzes, with younger swimmers competing in an eight-lane 25m pool and older swimmers in a 10lane 50m pool. Fifteen-year-old Holly Leggott, competing in her fourth Netherlands meet, had a memorable two days, winning three golds and three silvers. Her roommate, Lexy Cooper, reached the podium four times, with two silvers and two bronzes. Meanwhile, the boys celebrated two bronze medals, from Harry Cardell and Kallum Penman. In the 25m pool, ten-year-old Emma Dennis scooped one gold, two silvers and two bronzes, whilst Jacob Briers came away with a silver and a bronze. The team’s achievements, a u gus t 2 018

S & J Windows and Conservatories

– Local Firm Providing a Quality Service Family-run company, S & J Windows and Conservatories, are one of the leading suppliers and installers of doors, conservatories and uPVC windows throughout the region, and are now entering their twenty-sixth year of continuous trading. Local man, Steve Kell, and the team are continuing to build on the fine reputation for delivering top quality products and installation services, at highly competitive prices. From uPVC double glazing and orangeries to soffits and fascias and double glazing repairs, S & J’s fully qualified workforce have the knowledge and expertise to successfully complete their installations quickly and efficiently. They are dedicated to providing all of their many customers with an expert and unrivalled service, making them a company that can be trusted. Their two teams of fitters operate across the area from Bourne, Stamford and The Deepings, down through Peterborough, Huntingdon and St Neots, so they can easily access any location within these local regions. It is often the case that one satisfied customer within the local area is so impressed with the S & J products and service, that a glowing recommendation leads to further projects much further afield. Hence the S & J teams of fitters have, in recent years, been busy in London, Oxford, Skegness and Lincoln. Having been established in the area for so long has meant that Steve can now look at their installations from more than twenty years ago, where the original wooden frames would have perhaps been replaced with aluminium ones.

Those same customers are now seeing S & J return with replacement uPVC frames, knowing that the same level of quality workmanship and competitive pricing will have remained a key feature. Besides the ‘windows, doors, fascias and soffits’ part of the operation, Steve explains how many houseowners are now moving away from the practice of having their conservatory built with a polycarbonate roof, the transparent covering which notoriously makes the room into an oven in the summer months and then into a fridge, when the temperatures drop. This, of course, has made many expensive additions to the house virtual ‘no go areas’, (particularly when a summer such as this one comes around!) S & J have the solution with their tiled effect, “warm roof”, which has proved to be a very popular addition to their operation. Rather than simply cover an existing roof with the new composite tiles, S & J will remove the entire roof and replace it, ensuring that there will be no sagging in the future. Whatever the product, S & J pride themselves on their first class customer service and professional workmanship for total customer satisfaction. All of their products and installations are tailored to fit with the customer’s specific requirements - no matter what the query, they will find the ideal solution for you. The company now offers their customers finance arrangements. Acting as ‘introducers of finance’, S & J can ensure that the cost of the project can be spread over a period of time. See their website for further details.

Your Garden

August Gardening Tips As I am writing this, we are going through one of the hottest and driest periods we have had for a long time, and I am having to make daily trips to water my young plants and seedlings. However, at the moment, my allotment is looking really promising, and I have had a lot of really tasty mangetout peas. Trips to the allotment or vegetable plot will be more about watering and harvesting than planting, and to keep the weeds at bay, (which in the drier months should be less prolific), a regular hoeing should be sufficient. To retain precious moisture, it can help to add mulch around your crops to prevent excess evaporation, preferably immediately after it has rained. August is mainly about harvesting and enjoying the produce you have nurtured over the past few months, but there are still one or two crops that you can sow, mainly lettuces and salad leaves, spring onions, radishes, Japanese onion seeds (in situ), and a last batch of carrots and turnips. However, as you harvest your crops and create some space, you can transplant winter and spring cauliflowers, sprouting broccoli, Brussels sprouts and kale. Cabbage seeds can be planted in a temporary bed or in pots or modules - remember to cover them with nets to keep off the birds and caterpillars. Strawberry runners that have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot. Keep them well-watered, and planting them through weed suppressant material should help keep the moisture in and the soil warmer. Other jobs for this month include: • Pruning gooseberry and currant bushes. • Cut to the ground all raspberry canes that have borne fruit this year and tie in the new green canes that will produce next year’s fruit. • Continue pinching out tomatoes and don’t forget to provide support for the plants as they become more heavily laden - also for cucumbers, peppers and even fruit trees. • Keep earthing up potatoes to prevent the tubers being exposed and also brassicas to support unsteady stems.

32

Dig over any spaces that have been left from harvesting crops, where you could grow ‘green manure’, such as clover or vetch, which will provide nitrogen for the soil, or alfalfa, cress or mustard which will help break up the soil.

If you wish to store garlic onions and shallots, they will need to be thoroughly dried out and this can be achieved by lifting them carefully and laying them on the ground in the sun or spreading them out on racks. They can then be strung and hung, but not in the kitchen as the atmosphere is too moist; somewhere cool and dry is advisable.

Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes as this will encourage growth lower down, and harvest regularly before they become tough and stringy; you can let some grow on to produce bean seeds for next year.

Enjoy the fruits of your labour!

However, as well as protecting your property from burglars, it is also worth giving some thought to preventing domestic dramas whilst you’re away. Research has shown that around 25% of Brits have come back from their holiday to a home emergency, with water leaks the most common problem for those who have been faced with an unexpected disaster. Boiler breakdowns, pest infestations, and appliance breakdowns are among some of the other unwanted homecoming dramas. Turning off the water supply at the stopcock, switching off the boiler and unplugging all electrical items before going away are sound preventative measures. However, if you are unfortunate enough to come home to face the holiday blues because of a household crisis, Safe Local Trades has recommended professionals from electricians, bug busters, plumbers and many more at www.safelocaltrades. com.

How to gain up to a third more storage space in your home, in just one day! Space is critical in every home. Think of the number of times you’ve thought: “It would be good to keep this; the problem is where?” Well, how about your loft? In the average home it accounts for between a quarter to one-third of the volume. That’s a huge area that can add so many uses and benefits to family life. Perhaps it’s difficult to get into? Not floored for storage or use? Access4Lofts solve all these problems with simplicity. They specialise in developing lofts for storage. Safe access to your loft... The majority of properties have an access hatch to the space in the loft. Access4Lofts create space the easy and affordable way. They can supply and install a new loft hatch and a safe, sturdy aluminium loft ladder in your home in just one day! That means that your dark and dismal roof space suddenly becomes a useful storage area for all that family clutter. “My experience enables fitting the ladder and converting the access hatch, in double-quick time. The space is accessible and there's no mess left behind," says Paul Norgate of Access4Lofts Peterborough. 24 44

Floored and useful... Another option is to install a loft hatch and ladder and board out a decent sized area of your loft. This gives you somewhere to store the suitcases or keep your winter/summer clothes. As soon as you have this additional space you'll wonder how you lived without it for so long. Added property value exceeds fitting cost... With the problems of moving house today, not to mention all the stress of the move, this is a simple solution which adds value to your property. With a safe ladder giving access to your loft, everybody can store their goodies away from the living area. And, if you are planning to sell your home, easy access to the loft space could give your home the advantage over other houses your buyer might be looking at. If you'd like to find out how Paul can transform your loft into a useful storage area, then give him a call on 01733 663207 or take a look at www.access4lofts.co.uk/peterborough Ug Gu UsStT 22001188 aAu

Your Finances

The Liberty Partnership Difference - by Richard Ash, Director - Liberty Partnership Ltd

I

n January 2013, the then Financial Services Authority, (now the Financial Conduct Authority), increased the requirement for Financial Planners and Advisors to have greater-thanever-before ethical standards and higher levels of professional qualifications. The result of this is that, for those who have required or do require advice, they are represented by an excellent group of knowledgeable professionals. In this area alone we now have a number of highly regarded individuals and companies who provide financial planning advice. At Liberty Partnership, we have taken each of these standards as minimum requirements, and we are delighted to say that we are designated a Chartered Firm of Financial Planners. Across the professional landscape, from accountants to civil engineers, and of course financial planners, ‘Chartered’ status stands proud as being very much the gold standard.

This means that we have progressed with additional advanced qualifications and that we have a culture of high ethics, additional learning and professional development for all of our staff. This in turn, we believe, adds tremendous value to our clients who have the confidence and knowledge that they are being well looked after by our team. If you are looking for financial advice, then look out for the gold standard, and embark on a journey with a Financial Planner and their team in whom you can have real confidence. Please feel free to contact our office for a FREE initial consultation should you require advice on pensions, investments, estate planning or mortgages.

Number of Older People Left Without Social Care Support Hits Record High by Nick Ash, Managing Director

New figures have revealed that the number of older people in England and Wales without social care support has hit a record high. According to official statistics from AgeUK, approximately 1.4 million people, aged sixty-five or over, have needs such as getting dressed, washed or getting out of bed, which are not being met by the NHS or our social care system. The charity director of AgeUK, Caroline Abrahams, said: “Older people around the country are being very badly let down by the catastrophic lack of government funding for social care. Our new analysis echoes what we hear all around the country: it is getting ever harder to access care, if you need it, and increasing numbers of frail, ill, older people are being left to manage alone. It is profoundly shocking that 1.4 million older people, one in seven of the entire older population, now has some degree of unmet need, and the numbers are rising quite fast.” Nick Ash, Managing Director of Will and Probate Services reacted to the report, commenting: “The statistics are a real wake-up call for those of us in our

fifties and sixties. We need to get our plans in order. Having experienced the social care crisis first hand in my own family, I have come to the conclusion that the only way to ensure that future needs are met is to have a plan in place that retains control of both assets and decision-making within the family unit.” A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care said: “The government has committed to a long-term plan with a sustainable multi-year settlement for the NHS to help it manage growing patient demand. Health and social care are two sides of the same coin, and reforms must be aligned. That’s why our forthcoming green paper will be published in the autumn alongside the NHS plan.” This will be the third green paper in the last ten years. You can’t afford to wait for the government. Take advice on making your plans today and call Will and Probate Services on 01778 382723.

ew gardens are now complete without a buddleia, a popular plant commonly known as the butterfly bush, a ubiquitous species with over 140 varieties, yet few will know that it is named after the Rev Adam Buddle, a distinguished botanist, son of Richard Buddle of Deeping St James who was born and baptised there in 1662. Adam studied theology at St Catherine’s Hall, Cambridge, where he took a BA degree in 1681 followed by his MA in 1685, and soon became friendly with John Ray, also a theologian, who came from Black Notley near Braintree, Essex. Ray had written several books, some religious (The Wisdom of God) and some botanical (A Catalogue of English Plants, published in 1670), and was probably the first English taxonomist, that branch of biology concerned with the classification of organisms based on structure and origin. It was through his friendship that Buddle started on his quest of studying native mosses, grasses and plant species and soon established a reputation for his subject, being consulted by the experts of the time. By 1696, Buddle had married and was living at Hadleigh in Suffolk where his two children were baptised and in 1703, he was appointed rector of the parishes of North Farmbridge where he remained for many years and during this period, he wrote and compiled an entirely

new and complete reference work called English Flora in 1708, some three years after the death of John Ray. The book was never published but the manuscripts now form part of the Sloane collection at the Natural History Museum in London while the British Museum holds examples of his herbarium specimens. His work demonstrates accuracy, knowledge and diligence and it is therefore a great pity that his flora was never shared with a wider public. Carolus Linnaeus (1701-78), the Swedish naturalist and founder of modern scientific nomenclature for plants and animals, subsequently named the species Buddleia in honour of Buddle’s work in taxomony, notably Buddleia globosa, the first of many buddleias to follow. Adam Buddle died on 15th April 1715, aged 50, at Gray’s Inn, London, where he was a reader, and he is buried at St Andrew’s Church, Holborn, London. Unfortunately, butterflies are becoming a less familiar sight in our back gardens especially those close to farmland where agricultural chemicals take their toll, but we still get occasional glimpses of these colourful visitors such as this beautiful peacock (Aglais io) settling long enough to obtain a picture. Deeping St. Nicholas Festival – Thank Yous! The first Deeping St. Nicholas Festival was held between June 10th and 17th, and was a great success, made very special by all of the generous help and support offered. Special thanks are extended to the Festival Committee whose role it was to bring everything together. Thank you to the Parish and District Councillors who supported the Festival and made themselves available to answer questions. The week was opened with a service, at which the Archdeacon of Lincoln presided, and with a service presided at by the Bishop of Grantham. We are

thankful to them both for their time. Thank you to John Hayes MP for finding time to join us in his busy schedule. It was good to have the space to chat over lunch. We had great fun at the Dog Show, the Talent Show, the Kirton Brass Band Concert, and the Afternoon Tea. The ‘tour and talk’ at Nicholas Watts’s Farm was lovely, whilst the Quiz Night, the World Cup Night, the cooking and flower demonstration, and the Rockin Revs and the Ceilidh with Claddagh, were all a great success. A big thank you to David and Sue Steele for clearing the barn and hosting it, and thank

you to Karsten UK for supporting this event. It was such an enjoyable time, with the opportunity to meet new people and old friends from the village and the surrounding area. Thank you to all who came to support and join in.

Advice

Citizens Advice is Looking for New Volunteers Having launched a new style of service at their outreach in Bourne, Citizens Advice are looking to increase the number of volunteers there, and at the main office in Spalding. The new service is called Initial Check, and it lasts just a few minutes. It allows people who drop in, to talk through their issue, allowing a quick assessment of whether they can seek further help themselves; whether they can be signposted to another organisation with specialist skills; or whether the Citizens Advice team can help with advice. In Bourne, the service is operating alongside traditional face-to-face advice, and has transformed the amount of people who can be seen during opening hours. “We had a very successful year in 2017-18, where the value of our volunteers leapt from £581,467 to £783,162, ” said Megan Millar, Training Officer, “and now, if anyone is able to volunteer for six hours a week, we would be delighted to hear from them, either by contacting me on trainingofficer@citizendsadvicesouthlincs.org.uk, or by filling in the enquiry form on our website www. citizensadvicesouthlincs.org.uk. Interviews will be held in August for a September intake, and will be part of an introduction day which gives details on every role in the organisation, presented by the volunteers who are currently carrying them out. “People are surprised when they hear about the range of volunteer roles available,” said Megan, “and we can always find a role that is suitable for each individual’s range of skills and experience.”

It’s a Scarecrow Invasion - Dyke Scarecrow Festival September is usually one of the quietest months, as children return to school and the evenings draw in – yet, it’s at precisely this time that the picturesque village of Dyke, just north of Bourne, comes alive! An invasion of scarecrows engulfs the village - they hang from trees, peek around buildings, lounge in gardens and clamber over walls, in competition to be the best creation that visitors have seen. What started several years ago as a simple scarecrow festival has now morphed into a huge, fun-packed weekend festival, with beer and live music, classic cars, craft fairs and an inflatable extravaganza – all accompanied by dancers, martial arts performances, theatre groups and even a Tuneless Choir! We are also pleased to welcome ‘The Voice Kids’ star, Tabitha Gervis, who will be performing on the Saturday between 12 noon and 1.00pm. Food vendors will be preparing dishes from Mexico, the Caribbean and the Orient, as well as the more traditional beefburgers and hot dogs. And, if that’s not enough, we’ll be treated over the weekend to the Battle of Britain flight! Dyke Scarecrow Festival kicks off at 7pm on Friday, September 7th, when residents and visitors are welcomed to a full weekend’s entertainment and a tantalising selection of real ales. It’s free to enter the marquee, with two live bands playing each night, (Dean & Co on Friday at 7.30pm; then, on Saturday at 7.30pm, Pennyless, followed by Uninvited Guest) – all you have to buy is your drink! The play area will spring to life on Saturday morning, as classic cars arrive, craft stalls are

arranged, and food vendors switch on their ovens and hot plates. The scarecrow competition commences at 10am , but you don’t have to be a resident to enter your own creation - just send your details and name for the scarecrow to contact@dykevillagehall. org.uk to take part. There is a programme of events for the whole weekend, including a performance by the Tuneless Choir, ‘Bourne to Dance’ and Friends of Stamford and Rutland Theatre. Details can be found at www.dykevillagehall.org.uk. Car parking is FREE. Entrance to the festival main area is £2 p.p. Brian Parkinson, a festival organiser and Chair of Dyke Village Hall Committee says: “The planning for the event gets more elaborate each year, and we have a team of people busy behind the scenes to make sure the weekend is fun and engaging for everyone, young and old. It is a family event and we would love as many people as possible to get involved – whether as a visitor or by creating your own scarecrow. It’s a weekend’s worth of entertainment that’s easy on the pocket.”

Trophy Pet Foods – Valuable Advice on Feeding Your Dog Mealtimes are usually one of the highlights of your dog’s daily routine. Make sure that your dog’s feeding bowl is big enough to get their nose in and give them their own bowls for food and water. Wash out the bowls daily, and split their daily ration into two meals, rather than feeding just once a day - this will help with digestion and general wellbeing. Never give cooked bones to your dog; they can easily crunch them up and it can cause obstructions in the gut. If you want to give your dog a bone, it must be large and raw - large knucklebones are reasonably safe as they won’t splinter and can’t be swallowed. Better still, try an antler chew. Some dogs are sensitive to noise, and metal tags banging against bowls can be very distracting to sensitive animals

a u gus t 2 018

at mealtimes, so remove the collar and tag before feeding. Treats can be great for training, but remember that if you use a lot of them, you will cause your dog to gain weight. Even if your dog is on a diet, though, it doesn’t mean that they can’t enjoy the odd healthy treat between meals. Trophy Pet Foods are locally made at our own plant, nutritionally balanced, natural, ingredient-led and competitively priced. The recipes come with a wealth of key benefits and are optimised for premium nutrition. Your local Trophy Nutritional Adviser can offer a life-stage review or a

nutritional consultation, to ensure that your dog is on the most appropriate food for them. Treats, toys and accessories are all available in the van when we deliver, just ask!

Pets and Vets

Having a Bad Ear Day - Advice from Alder Vets

E

ar disease is annoying for both pet and owner alike, since it causes painful, irritated, itchy and smelly ears, and is one of the most common complaints when seeking veterinary advice, and one of the most frustrating to treat.

are the worst offenders, causing extreme pain and irritation.

The outer part of a dog’s ear comes in a huge variety of shapes because of the breeds we have developed from the Chihuahua to the Great Dane. Essentially, the ear canal is L-shaped with vertical and horizontal sections, unlike the human ear canal which is a straight tube. The cells lining the canal secrete wax which is pale beige in colour and is constantly being moved out of the canal by microscopic waving hairs. This conveyor belt combination is designed to remove debris blown into the ear and any build up of yeasts and bacteria. A thin membrane lies at the end of the canal, known as the tympanic membrane or eardrum, and its job is to amplify sound to the middle ear.

Most times, keeping the ear free of overproduced black wax and moisture helps to reduce the incidence of ear disease, and using proper canine ear cleaner is sufficient. However, infections can soon invade. If your pet has been prescribed antibiotic ear drops, it is important to complete the course and have him checked afterwards to make sure the infection is completely gone. In some cases, gentle ear flushing is required. Unlike humans, we must anaesthetise dogs for this, as they need to remain still to prevent damage to the eardrum.

If the ear canal becomes abnormal then the normal waxy barrier cannot function, and ear disease develops. Some ear canals are too narrow or hairy to allow air to flow properly and this causes moisture retention. For some pets, skin allergies also inflame the skin within the ears and can activate overproduction of wax. Occasionally, foreign bodies are found in the ear and grass seeds

When a dog rubs his ears on the carpet, shakes his head vigorously or when there is a distinctive smell to the ears, it is time to see the vet.

infections or their underlying causes, most ear diseases clear quickly. It doesn’t take long on a ‘bad ear day’ to look under the flap and have a quick peek.

Unfortunately, a minority of dogs will go on to have end-stage ear disease, where the infected tissue of the ear canal completely closes it. The ear then becomes a constant source of pain and also results in severe, if not complete, hearing loss. In these cases, surgery may be the best solution. Because of the variety of breeds and ear shapes, each dog’s problem is unique but with regular cleaning and prompt treatment of any
