Welcome to your September edition and, as the heatwave of a few weeks ago soon become a distant memory, we’re now back into the “exam results” and “back to school” routines for many. For us mums (and dads) with our teenagers now having received their GCSE and A-level results, we can step back, take a deep breath and see just what fantastic human beings they actually are, as they move on to the next stage of their lives. They have done their very best, taken the advice offered by their teachers and us, formulated future plans, and are developing into responsible adults.

Phew!

I hope your summer proved enjoyable, relaxing and, just like this magazine, full of excitement and interest.

September’s here, and there’s that “end of summer” feeling, not only in the air, but also in this month’s packed “smorgasbord” of features, articles, advice and entertaining information. It’s now time to look ahead and wonder why Christmas presents should already be on show in the shops! We’ve started the ball rolling here, with several local eating establishments giving advance notice of their Christmas and New Year plans.

The annual Edinburgh Fringe Festival always seems to signal the end of summer for many people, but always provides enough mirth and merriment to see us through the months to come. I’ll share just a couple of my favourite one-liners from previous years: “Crime in multi-storey car parks is wrong on so many levels” – Tim Vine 2011.

“It all starts innocently enough, mixing chocolate and Rice Krispies, but before you know it you’re adding raisins and marshmallows – it’s a rocky road!” – Olaf Falafel 2016.

Sparkle Set to Leave North Street Independent family jewellers, Crown Jewellers of Bourne has announced that it will close its doors for the final time, as owners Cathy and Russ Powell plan to relocate back to their home territory in the North West, where they will be able to spend some quality time with their elderly parents and family.

Ears - Your questions answered

O

ver the last few months, many of our local G.P. surgeries have discontinued their ear irrigation service which many of you will know used to be called syringing. As a result, some patients will now need to consult with an independent ear care practitioner as they do for other health services, such as dentistry, podiatry, osteopathy and the optician for example.

Ears are just as important as your eyes, teeth and feet, yet they are often the neglected organ. Deafness or reduced hearing can make us feel vulnerable, especially if we live alone. It can make us feel dizzy, unsteady on our feet, and at times very unwell.

As a nurse, I have specialised in caring for ears for the past twenty years. I am passionate about these fascinating organs and get immense satisfaction out of helping my patients leave the clinic feeling better than when they came in. I enjoy educating people and sharing my knowledge with them. Over the years, I have cared for thousands of ears and it still amazes me the methods people will use to try and remove a build-up of wax themselves. I have removed peas, insects, bits of twig, match ends, bits of hair grips, cotton bud tips and lately, some wax from a Hopi ear candle that had fallen onto the ear drum!

Remember … ears are delicate and need to be looked after safely.

Whilst everybody produces wax naturally, for some the amount is excessive. This problem is usually hereditary, but it can be from working in a noisy or dusty environment.

DIY bulbs that you buy over the chemist’s counter can cause problems from not actually being able to see what you are doing. Many drops that are sold to ‘dissolve’ the wax state that they can help you to avoid the irrigation process.However, wax does not actually dissolve, and these drops can contain acids, bleach, and peroxide, which are not the nicest things to put into your ears. To safely remove a wax build-up, I recommend putting a few drops of olive oil into each ear for four to six days, prior to booking an ear syringing consultation with a professional.

Here at the Wellhead Practice, I see patients of all ages, and offer appointments on a Thursday, Friday and some Saturday mornings too. I offer a full examination of both ears with advice and education for £10. If you then require ear irrigation, this would cost £30 for one ear or £45 for both. Most patients will only need one appointment and, as part of the fee, I also include an annual ‘check up’ appointment, so we can make sure your ear(s) have remained in tip-top condition.

How To Become A World Famous Musician The road to becoming a successful musician is long and treacherous, full of twists and turns, on a journey that seems endless. But what if I told you that it’s actually only a few steps? Giant steps, but still only a few. The hardest part for most people is actually starting this journey.

So how do you take that first step? The only thing you really need to get started is just a few chords. You’d be amazed by how many songs that you know and love only use three or four chords. Do any of these ring a bell?

The best way to get started with achieving this level of success, is to not give up at the first hurdle! Ed Sheeran started out with no ability as a musician. In his early days, by his own admission, he wasn’t very good - he couldn’t sing well, and certainly didn’t have the songwriting capabilities which now enable him to create global hits.

The difference between him and many other musicians that didn’t make it, is that he was committed to nurturing and developing his skills. He never gave up.

So your first step to success is to get that guitar out of the cupboard, brush off the cobwebs and keep trying. If you can learn your first three chords, you’ve taken a huge step towards your goal. The next step, is not to give up until you’ve reached it!

Helping Mums Reach Their Fitness Goals

inding time to exercise is something a lot of mums struggle with, and during the summer holidays good habits often fall by the wayside. September provides a fresh start with the opening of the new school term and the beginning of the countdown to Christmas (eek!) It also happens to be the month when most babies are born, so I thought I’d dedicate this month’s column to helping new, and not so new, mums reach their fitness goals.

I’ve teamed up with Joni from JR Fit, who specialises in pre and postnatal fitness, to provide our:

TOP TIPS

Make time for yourself Often your own self care is last on the list, but exercise makes you feel good. Remember … happy mum = happy children (most of the time!) so ditch the guilt and make time to spend on your fitness and wellbeing.

Set yourself a goal The best way to keep motivated is to set yourself a goal – you might want to lose a stone by Christmas (it’s achievable in 12 weeks!), get stronger, or run 5km. If you’ve only just had a baby, your body needs time to recover, so build your fitness gradually and focus on feeling fitter, rather than aiming for a weight loss.

Incorporate exercise into your routine Walk, jog or cycle on the school run; go to the gym on the way home to or from work; make childcare plans so you can attend a regular evening class; or find a daytime class that you can bring your child to.

Build your fit mum tribe Mums are great at supporting each other, so work out with a friend, take childcare in turns, or make some new friends in our fitness classes or the gym.

Get specialist pre and postnatal advice Exercise has many benefits while pregnant and postnatal, but you

will need to adapt it for each stage to ensure it is safe and effective. A qualified pre and postnatal instructor will be able to do this for you. If you have diastasis recti (abdominal gap), pelvic floor dysfunction (leaking urine), or prolapse, which may affect you years after giving birth, a specialist instructor can help support your recovery.

Atmosphere is Everything

What motivates you?

In an exercise context of course.

Well from my perspective there are two points at which it is imperative that you find motivation.

There’s the moment before you begin – the catalyst, the spark. And then during the process – there’s the need for a fuel that keeps you going. A reason to keep moving forward. Pushing past obstacles and plateaus.

Have you ever walked past a restaurant or a bar and looked in the window to see that it is quiet? Nobody around…

You don’t want to be the first to go in.

And what does that say about the place? Is it good? And if it is, when we go in, will it be so quiet that people listen to your conversation? Essentially you don’t want to be somewhere, where the only ‘noise’ is you. You are reliant upon yourself/yourselves to create an atmosphere in the hope that there will be that one brilliant member of staff that makes your experience one to remember. It’s a gamble. “No… let’s go to the next one…”

You are looking for that something intangible, that welcoming burble and warmth. That buzz. That wrap around feeling of bustling business that allows you to walk in and be carried into an atmosphere that will lead to fun, happiness, and welcoming, effortless comfort.

Is this an analogy that works when thinking about exercise? When thinking about a gym? Yes. I would say certainly… yes!

Of course, when thinking about exercise, nothing, by definition, should be ‘effortless’ as of course reward

depends upon work. But you should of course expect the same welcome when walking through the doors. The same feeling of warmth and the same uplifting atmosphere you find in your favourite restaurant. An atmosphere that itself acts as a catalyst for progress.

My thoughts in this area were born just a few days ago, when speaking to a new member at Empire who had been training elsewhere.

He arrived as someone who was already versed in exercise and who had hit a plateau.

We had a tour of the gym.

This is always the greatest pleasure. Music playing, members saying hello as we walk around. Air conditioning on. The Empire atmosphere in full effect. There is no need to ‘sell’ rather just to be the narrator of a story that is unfolding in front of the person’s eyes as we walk around.

“This is my brother Dave, and there’s my dad and mum is over there… It’s a family business and should feel that way…”

There are people of all levels of experience, all ages, men and women.

He asks…

“I am looking to try to take things to the next level… do you provide personal training and how much is it?”

At this point I explain…

“Personal Training would be great for you, but before that, just see what effect the Empire atmosphere has. Be part of it. Enjoy it, then speak to me if you think personal training is necessary or whether it’s just a case of being in the right environment” He has trained every weekday morning since and appears to be absolutely flying. Mornings at Empire between 6am – 8am are a fantastic time of day to train. Busy. Full of people who have set their alarm to follow their goals and aspirations. He is now part of that.

when it comes to people working on themselves and their passion.

happen in their numbers every day. But my point is… it’s like a nursery. In the garden centre sense. The right atmosphere. The right foundations. The best possible conditions to grow.

To conclude… Motivation is woven into the fabric of Empire culture at every level.

And our staff will be there at every stage of the journey.

All of the gym staff employed here are qualified to at least Level 2 Gym instructor level. Most to Level 3 Personal Trainer level. We have me and my brother and two additional ‘freelance’ Personal Trainers. Adam Northover and Emily Brand. Both outstanding.

If you are beginning – we know how that feels and will engage in conversations about you and your personal journey to this point… the moment you arrived at Empire.

If you are ‘continuing’ - the Empire atmosphere and camaraderie will lift you to another level.

Everyone is first aid trained. And we are trained to use the on-site defibrillator.

Some of our staff and personal trainers are already winning bodybuilding competitions while others take a different path. But all are blessed with the key interpersonal skills that are the foundation of motivational conversations and relationships. The balance here is close to perfect.

50% female membership too. So, any thoughts that gyms are male-dominated, testosterone-fuelled environments are squashed immediately. That’s not to say people don’t come here and train hard. Indeed, there is some serious work that goes on behind the Art Deco Empire façade from both men and women alike. It’s a welcoming atmosphere but motivation lives here in its truest sense

And if you want to use the additional belief and motivation you have discovered, our Personal Trainers will be the motivational vehicle to transport you to your best, excellent self. Personal training is at its most valuable when it is in an environment you feel comfortable in. So, couple the highest calibre of trainer, with the highest calibre of environment... you are on a winner.

So, I hope these words can be the catalyst. The spark. The beginning.

Confidence, Self-esteem and Doubt

Life is a wonderful thing … but does it pass you by?

We all go through life not knowing what is around the corner. There is a certain routine to growing up that has to be taken - going to school, further education, job prospects etc ... but do you ever think, is this it?

I sometimes sit with clients who have spent years worrying, every single day consumed about what they have done in the past and should it have been done differently, or the future - what will happen tomorrow, next week, next month, next year even?

Lincolnshire Heritage Open Days September 6th – 9th and 13th – 16th In its twenty-fifth year the Heritage Open Days will be operating across not one, but two amazing weekends, delivering what is sure to be a fantastic festival, with over 170 events across the county of Lincolnshire. Organised for the county by Heritage Lincolnshire and the Lincolnshire Heritage Open Days Steering Group since 1994, the festival celebrates both Lincolnshire’s best-loved treasures and its hidden gems. There are events and activities for all ages and interests, from children’s trails and musical performances, to expert-led guided tours and temporary exhibitions. Some of the buildings are only open to the public for this event. This year, the theme is ’Picturing the Past’, celebrating Lincolnshire’s rich heritage through the medium of art, photography, design and more.

Advice

Citizens Advice – Migrant Workers The Citizens Advice Service in the Deepings includes a drop-in fifteenminute assessment at the New Community Centre, Market Deeping, on Wednesday mornings, before an afternoon appointment, (if needed), or a referral to Deeping St James, fortnightly on Thursdays, where the United Churches have generously funded an outreach at the Institute, on 38 Church Street.

The service is part of the South Lincolnshire Citizens Advice Service, which spreads from Grantham to Spalding and Stamford. One of the specialisms in the wider area is the help given to migrant workers, assisting them to integrate into their communities, through a team of three Polish- and Russian-speaking advisors working in Grantham and Spalding, and this is particularly relevant during the summer season.

Face-to-face advice is funded through the National Lottery, and there is a migrant workers helpline funded by the Henry Smith Foundation.

Migrant workers face many of the same problems as any client of Citizens Advice, ranging from tax credits and rented housing issues, to employment issues, sickness benefits and pensions, and there is the added difficulty of understanding the rules in the UK relating to these. All three advisors have come to the UK in the same way as their clients, and have now put down roots here, so they are in a unique position to understand the migrant workers’ problems.

August 5th 2018 The 2018 Deepings Raft Race was another great crowd-puller, with forty-two rafts in various categories, and some fabulous designs to go with this year’s theme – Heroes & Villains. Add to that all the people who turned up in some wonderful fancy dress outfits, and all the stalls and displays that contributed to a superb event.

Last year, over £8,000 was raised for good causes, and the organisers are hopeful of topping that this year. The exact figure will be known in the next few weeks.

Deepings Rotary Club - ‘Friends of Chernobyl’s Children’, Twin Lakes Trip On June 28th, a group of eight Interact members, two members of the Deepings Rotary Club, Playscheme Co-ordinator for F.O.C.C, Sue Garford, and three translators took a group of twenty-one children to Twin Lakes, Melton Mowbray. The children were from Belarus and were linked within the charity, ‘Friends of Chernobyl’s Children’.

ith the summer holiday drawing to a close, families are preparing to send their children back to school, with many out buying the last few items of uniform or getting that ‘back to school haircut’. My daughter also starts school this September and I would like to wish all the children, (and their parents!) the best of luck for a smooth start to their school life.

Schooling can play a large part in influencing where people decide to live, and we find some couples plan well ahead of starting a family where they would like to live in relation to schooling. Other families look to move closer to secondary schools to improve their chances of school selection, and some move closer after being offered a school place, thus reducing the length of the school run. Lasting Power of Attorney: Planning for the unexpected Many of us refuse to accept that we might lose our mental capacity and so don’t think about how we would manage our financial affairs if we did become mentally incapable. However, statistics show that there are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, of whom 40,000 are under the age of sixty-five. According to the Alzheimer’s Society, this situation is getting worse.

It is therefore important to plan ahead and ease the potential burden on your relatives.

One answer is to create a lasting power of attorney (LPA), which gives someone you trust the legal authority to make decisions on your behalf about your financial affairs if you become mentally incapable of making your own decisions.

It is very important that you set up an LPA while you are still mentally capable, well before you need it. If you become mentally incapacitated later in life and don’t have an LPA in place, your relatives can face long,

distressing delays and expense in applying to the court to take control.

Don’t assume that because you have set up an LPA, you have lost control.

Your LPA would only be activated if and when it is needed.

The LPA is a powerful legal document.

You may wish to get a solicitor to help if you’re unsure about the process.

There are two types of LPA. A property and financial affairs LPA is used to appoint someone you trust as your attorney to take decisions on your behalf about money matters. They would be empowered, for example, to make decisions on buying and selling your property, running your bank accounts, dealing with your bills and state benefits and investing your money. This type of LPA can also be useful if you need your attorney to help you because of physical incapacity as well as mental incapacity.

A health and welfare LPA only applies if you become mentally incapacitated and allows your chosen attorney to make decisions about your care, including where you live,

YOU’RE just about to sit down to your favourite soap or are in the middle of cooking dinner or bathing the kids, the phone rings - and it’s one of THOSE calls.

It is estimated that around 30 million nuisance calls are made each week. However, many of these are made not just by cold callers, but by scammers; bringing misery to some of the most vulnerable members of our community, such as those living alone or with dementia.

At Safe Local Trades, we echo the concerns of groups like the recently-formed Cambs Against Scams Partnership and the nationwide Friends Against Scams initiative - which recognise the harm done by fraudsters; not only those who dupe their victims to part with their cash, but who also feel threatened and helpless against the callers.

In 2016, a grant of £500,000 was made to National Trading Standards Scams Team, (NTS Scams Team), to provide telephone call blocking technology to people who are bombarded by scam and nuisance calls, and are most vulnerable to losing money to these callers.

Initially, the focus was on providing call blocking units to people living with dementia.

There are an estimated 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over one million 10:05 by 2025. The project has been a great success, with the units blocking 99% of scam and nuisance calls received and making dramatic improvements to users’ wellbeing.

And, equally as important, the results saw a 97% reduction in users losing money at the hands of scammers, an 85% reduction in users feeling helpless to stop the calls, and an 85% reduction in the number of users who were worried by these calls.

Friends Against Scams is a NTS Scams Team initiative, which aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams by empowering communities to “Take a Stand Against Scams”.

Friends Against Scams has been created to tackle the lack of scams awareness by providing information about scams and those who fall victim to them. This information enables communities and organisations to understand scams, talk about scams, and cascade messages throughout communities about scams prevention and protection.

FAS encourages communities and organisations to take the knowledge learnt and turn it into action.

Anybody can join Friends Against Scams and make a difference in their own way.

The scenario which we were presented with was: “The shopper has inherited the family home from his deceased father and needs to know his options. The shopper is in Cambridgeshire, calling about a family home left to him in a will.

Ownership of the home is split 50/50 with his brother, who wants the shopper to buy him out. The selfemployed shopper is considering whether to keep the property as a buy-to-let (BTL). The shopper is also considering buying a property in Kent.”

We were then reviewed on the following criteria: Speed of response (time of call): 10.10am, receptionist answered after five rings, transferred to adviser who picked up after five rings : 3/5.

Telephone manner: Friendly and professional : 5/5.

Relevant qualifications: CeMap, (Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice) : 5/5.

Guidance given: The adviser explained potential hurdles for getting a BTL mortgage, and how to overcome them, along with the inheritance tax thresholds. Buying a House – Most people don’t think about this, but when you buy a house, it makes sense to protect what will be your biggest asset by making provision for what happens to it if you die.

Moving in Together – There is a myth about ‘Common Law’ husbands and wives which can cause problems. If you live together as partners, the only way you can inherit off each other is to have a valid up-to-date will in place.

Getting Married – A little known fact is that a marriage revokes a previous will. So if you get married, you need to re-do your wills.

Village Show Celebrates 75th Anniversary Glinton Village Show is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year on Saturday September 15th.

Run by the Glinton Horticultural Society, the show will be held at Arthur Mellows Village College

from 2.00pm - 5.00pm. There are more than 200 classes for flowers and vegetables, baking and preserves, handicrafts and photography, along with a large children’s section.

The Open Begonia Group and the Glinton Art Club will also be there, with displays of beautiful

Deeping Club Go Medal Hunting in the U.S.A. The Market Deeping Tang Soo Do Club, led by Master Robbie Tyler, took eleven students to represent Team GB at the World Championships, held in North Carolina, USA. The competition had over one thousand, seven hundred competitors taking part from forty-one different countries from around the world.

Team GB took a total of fifty-five students and came back with an impressive haul of ninetyfive medals in total, which was a fantastic achievement. The eleven students from the Market Deeping Club had great success, winning eight golds, five silvers and four bronze medals. The

team displayed some fabulous performances and have gained some great experience in competing against some of the world’s best.

The MDTSD competitors were: Robbie Tyler, Ian Williams, Phillip Sutton, Thomas Roberts, Mia Newman, James Roberts, Thomas Sutton, Laurence Sutton, Max Meli, Freya Newman and Emily Meli.

Method • Mix the lamb, grated onion and herbs in a bowl with some seasoning, then divide the mix into 4 and shape into burgers.

• Heat a griddle pan until hot, rub the burgers with oil, and cook for 5-6 mins on each side, or until cooked through.

Discovering . . . Taverns and inns

T

he public houses that we know today have evolved over the centuries, beginning with the taverns of Roman times during the 1st century where travellers could obtain refreshment from the alehouses and the tied houses of the 19th century where the landlord sold only those beers produced by the brewery which owned the establishment.

Today, the system is far more relaxed and although tied houses remain, free houses which sell whatever the landlord wishes are far more prevalent although all still have one thing in common and that is a distinctive name, a tradition dating back to the late 14th century when Richard II introduced legislation requiring pubs to display a sign outside to make them easily visible for passing official ale tasters who would call in to assess the quality of the beer being sold.

The taverns of yesteryear have now become the public houses of today, referred to lovingly by those who live or work nearby as their “local”, the place to meet friends for a drink or meal in a welcoming atmosphere of conviviality and often a game of darts, dominoes or pool.

The Deepings have had their fair share with a variety of names and in 1850, Market Deeping supported three inns, the Bull, the New Inn [now the Deeping Stage] and the White Horse, and nine pubs, notably

the Black Horse, the Bluebell and the Odd Fellows’ Arms in Church Street, the George and the Wheatsheaf in Towngate and the King’s Head and Red Lion in High Street.

In addition, there were nine beer houses which were also allowed to sell ale although this was regulated by the passing of the Wine and Beerhouse Act in 1869 which taxed owners on their sales with the result that the number declined rapidly and then disappeared completely.

Deeping St James also had several pubs, namely the Bell, the Chestnut Horse, the George and Dragon, the Rose and Crown and the Three Tuns, the Walnut Tree and Wheatsheaf, while West Deeping also had a George and Dragon and a Red Lion. Practically all of the surrounding villages also had their own, one of the most quaintly named being the Foaming Tankard at Braceborough.

Many of these survive today and although public houses are in decline throughout the country, those that remain have found a new clientele seeking food with their drink although the good cheer and companionship to be found there over the centuries remains.

South Kesteven Acting Musical Players, (SKAMP), were founded in June 2007, and are a local amateur dramatics group, performing pantomime, musicals, murder-mystery events, and medley/ cabaret shows throughout venues in Bourne, Stamford, Market Deeping to audiences within Rutland and Lincolnshire.

Local dog boarding company, Wagging Tails, recently celebrated the completion of its first year providing dog owners throughout the PE postcode area in Cambridgeshire with a home-based alternative to kennels.

The business was launched in May 2017 by Shirley Lilley, who has put together a team of high quality ‘dog carers’ who welcome dogs into their own homes for a ‘doggy holiday’ while their owners are away. The service has seen a huge demand and the business is fully booked for much of the 2018 summer holidays and beyond.

“Urine the Money!”

T

he heat of recent weeks has meant that lounging outside with a Pimm’s and a parasol is the most active I want to be. The cats are the same, (although they’re not so keen on the Pimm’s!) Most cats find a nice shady spot with a gentle breeze, and stretch out to enjoy the summer. However, the hot weather can bring its problems, even to cats. As many people know, cats came originally from Egypt and were brought across to Britain by the Romans to deal with mice eating their harvests. Cats, therefore, are desert species and tend to drink less water than other types of pets.

Many cats will get most of their daily fluid requirements from eating wet food, a quick drink from the pond or bird feeder, rather than the water in a clean bowl.

The first indications of problems are when your cat is frequently squatting on the litter tray. It may be that your cat uses a litter tray very rarely and this is unusual, or that your cat is

spending a long time squatting.

Your cat may also pass urine in a corner of the room which is odd for a normally clean animal. For most cats, this is an indication of cystitis, inflammation of the bladder itself.

If you could see the bladder directly, it is red and thickened. It also becomes quite fragile and bleeds easily. Not only is the bladder itself inflamed, but the tube taking urine from the bladder to the outside, the urethra, is also painful. Your cat will feel they need to pass urine frequently because of this, even though there is very little in the bladder. The urine stings and occasionally cats will yowl with the discomfort – unpleasant indeed.

A more serious condition than cystitis generally occurs in male cats, (although females can also be affected), where the urethra becomes blocked and the cat is unable to pass urine at all. This is known as ‘a blocked cat’ and is so

serious they can die within a few hours. The urine dams back to the kidneys affecting their functions and the cat can go into shock and acute renal failure.

There are numerous reasons why this occurs. Infections and stress are two of the most common reasons.

Some cats can produce tiny crystals in their urine and, when these join to form stones, they can block the urethra. More concentrated urine in dry weather increases the tendency for these stones to form. Dry diets used to be implicated many years ago due to a higher salt content, but good quality dry foods have eliminated this problem.

Other problems, of course, can mimic the symptoms of cystitis, so if your cat is no longer happy and relaxed but straining and crying, call the vet immediately. It may be mild cystitis and is quickly sorted, but it may be much worse – don’t let squatting cats lie!
