It’s getting closer by the day, and I’m not talking about the ticklish thirty days ahead for us ladies, as some of our chaps let loose that moustache once more during “Movember”. No, I’m talking turkey, trees, tinsel and trimming-up, as the whole wonderful Christmas season gathers momentum once more. This month’s issue features some local restaurants and hostelries offering all manner of attractions for the festive weeks ahead, so remember to book early for your special events.

No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees, No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds! November!

Never mind, there’s always plenty to cheer us all up, whatever the weather, and this month’s issue presents you with its customary cornucopia of information, advice, opinion and the occasional one-liner. (I recently swapped our bed for a trampoline – my wife nearly hit the roof!)

What is particularly thought-provoking this month, of course, is the centenary of the ending of World War 1. Throughout our area on November 11th, thousands of people will take time out to remember those who have, (during that conflict and several others since 1918), given their lives, in order that we can live ours in peace. We will remember them.

Bonfire Night - Advice and Ideas

B

onfire night will soon be lighting up our skies once again and, for children, it’s one of the most exciting evenings of the year. Whether you’re heading to a local bonfire party or throwing your own, here are some tips and a couple of craft ideas to ensure that it’s a magical time for all,

Bonfire night craft ideas for the family Zooming rocket ● Make a tube shape from card.

What will you need?

As with any outdoor British event, you need to take the right supplies and think ahead:

● Then cut round a circle and snip from one edge into the centre and fold round to make a cone for your rocket.

● Wrap up warm – If you’re going to be standing around in the cold, make sure everyone is wrapped up warm: hats, scarves, gloves (especially for holding sparklers) and warm socks are a must.

● Tape on the cone, then snip some streamers (you could use tissue or crepe paper or colourful strips from a magazine). Add glitter or felt pen designs for added pizzazz.

● Stay dry – Packing waterproofs is also a good move, if you’re planning to outsmart the British weather. ● Protect ears – If you know your child is sensitive to noise, it’s well worth investing in a pair of ear plugs or ear defenders to help muffle the bangs. ● Take a buggy – Negotiating the crowds at a fireworks display isn’t easy with children in tow. If you know that little legs are likely to get tired, take a buggy along. ● Take supplies – Don’t forget to take plenty of snacks and drinks, too, unless you’re willing to spend hours queuing for overpriced hotdogs and toffee apples … and maybe even miss the display!

children’s painted hand prints, cut them out and stick them on to card to resemble a bonfire.

School News Very Successful Open Evening at The Deepings School On Thursday September 27th we held our main school Open Evening, primarily for Year 5 and Year 6 students, although everyone was welcome!

The evening was buzzing with exciting activities in every subject area, together with information about our admissions process; impressive displays by the Tang Soo Do champions; and delicious food samples from our talented catering team.

Headteacher, Mr Lord, provided guests with an overview of the school’s ethos and expectations, accompanied by three students, representing each Key Stage of the school. They answered questions about what it’s like to be a student at The Deepings School.

Parents were impressed by the range of activities and the friendly atmosphere of the school and one young visitor, Ben, from Werrington said, “Science

was really great and I was very excited.”

Parents’ comments included: “Your student guides are a credit to you, and everyone is so friendly and welcoming.”

“Fabulous, well-organised evening. I will also book on a Discovery Morning to see the school during the day, but we would not consider going anywhere else now.”

Mrs Taylor who co-ordinated the evening commented, “We wanted to give visitors a picture of our school and highlight some of the amazing opportunities there are for all students who join us.

We are also very grateful to our exceptional pupils for giving up their time to help in subject areas, provide musical entertainment, and guide parents and children around the school.”

William Hildyard C. of E. Primary and Nursery School The Reception and Nursery children have been very lucky this new term and have received ten brand new balance bikes from Balanceability, complete with safety helmets and planning resources! Our teaching assistants have even had specific training in how to use the balance bikes as part of a physical literacy programme. All the

activities are designed to promote the motivation, confidence and physical competence of a child.

The balance bikes are fantastic and proving to be a real hit in the foundation stage unit; they make learning to ride a bike without stabilisers a lot easier.

It means that children can concentrate on the core skills of balance and gross motor control needed to perfect riding, without having to grasp propulsion, and foot and leg positioning at the same time.

Balanceability also helps to underpin co-ordination, visual motor and auditory skills, and standards in reading and comprehension. Get gliding everyone!

Headstart … for New Ideas and Extra Opportunities At Headstart Nursery in Market Deeping, we are continually developing new ideas to assist in our children’s learning and development.

Since the introduction of our own Forest School learning facilities, the children have had amazing opportunities to explore and learn outdoors, doing woodwork and cooking over an open fire. We also offer extra-curricular clubs, such as craft, dance, science explorers and sewing, which give the children a diverse range of opportunities to learn and develop new skills, over and above the daily activities in which they participate.

School News Deeping St James Community Primary School 1968 - 2018 This year sees the fiftieth anniversary of Deeping St James Primary School on its present site. We celebrated in September, with staff, old and new, coming together for an evening hog roast and disco. The children celebrated in school, making bunting, singing songs from across the era, and playing old-fashioned party games, whilst every child received a commemorative leather book mark, provided by our school PTA. It has been a particularly busy start to the year. Our children have already been involved in netball and football matches in the local area; Year 6 have been on a residential visit to Hilltop (North Norfolk); and they also celebrated their Harvest Service in The Priory Church.

We all enjoyed our annual Key Stage 1 Grandparents’ Afternoon in October, where over ninety grandparents came to visit their grandchildren in classrooms for the afternoon, and then joined in our weekly Celebration Assembly.

We have a further afternoon, planned in March for Key Stage 2.

We have our Open Evening for parents who are interested in their child joining the school in our Reception Class for September 2019. This is on Tuesday November 6th at 6pm at school, although individual visits are also welcomed. Catchment areas will certainly be wider next year, so please come and have a look round – I would love to see you. At present, we have spaces in our current Reception Class.

Future Events: We will be performing at Market Deeping Christmas Market, and carol singing around a number of venues in our local area.

Our Christmas Fair is on Friday December 7th, from 4pm.

Pupils Take Cakes to Rose Lodge Residential Home Reception children at Market Deeping Community Primary School have been learning all about fairy tales in their first weeks of school. Whilst reading ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, the four and five-year-olds thought it would be a good idea to take some cakes to grandma’s cottage. They made traps for the wolf to ensure that he would not stop them on their journey and then they baked their cakes.

Instead of visiting everyone’s grandma, they felt it would be best to visit the residents of Rose Lodge Residential Home in Market Deeping. The elderly residents were delighted with their visitors and the delicious chocolate and lemon cakes.

Mrs Elaine Ground, class teacher, said, “It was wonderful for the children to visit Rose Lodge and we received a wonderful welcome. The children have really enjoyed the baking and tasting of the cakes, but their visit to the grannies and grandpas was the best bit.”

Headteacher, Mark Ratchford, said, “Market Deeping Community Primary School is hoping to develop links with more local community groups so as to give the children their sense of place in the community. If you work or volunteer locally, please do get in touch if you wish to get involved in some of the exciting learning opportunities we are developing.”

New Club Record for Deepings’ Louis at National Championships Four Deepings Swimming Club members were selected to represent Lincolnshire in the 2018 Swim England National County Team Championships, which took place at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield. Holly Leggott, Bethany Eagle-Brown, Louis Metselaar and Tom Adams competed against sixteen other teams, with Louis selected as the boys’ team captain. Each had an individual race, over 100m, as well as being chosen for the relays.

In the boys 100m breaststroke, Louis Metselaar broke the Deepings Swimming Club record, which had stood for seventeen years, touching home in twelfth place. Bethany Eagle-Brown posted her fastest time of the year in the 100m butterfly, narrowly outside her lifetime best. Holly Leggott set a new personal best time and became the third Deepings swimmer to be eligible for the winter short course championships in November. Meanwhile, Tom Adams competed in the 100m freestyle and posted his fastest time of the new season.

Lynn Chapman, Deepings Swimming Club Head Coach, said, “It’s always an honour to be selected for your county. Holly, Bethany, Louis and Tom all produced excellent swims and did themselves, the club and the county proud.”

Eat the Season

TOFFEE APPLES Toffee Apples make a great Bonfire Night snack and the kids will love helping to decorate them with their favourite sweets!

Ingredients 10 wooden skewers (or lolly sticks)

Method • Insert a wooden skewer or lolly stick into the stalk end of each apple. Line a large baking tray with baking parchment.

2 tbsp golden syrup

• Put the sugar in a heavy-based pan with 120ml cold water and heat gently, stirring until it dissolves. Bring to the boil and add the vinegar, butter and golden syrup. Boil gently for 12 minutes, until it has reached the soft-crack stage (138°C on a sugar thermometer, or the point at which a little of the mixture, dropped into cold water, forms threads that bend slightly before breaking).

To decorate, why not try sugar stars, crushed ginger snap biscuits, chocolate M&Ms, sprinkles or bits of popcorn? Yummy!

• Dip the bottom two-thirds of the apple in the toffee, turning to coat. Working quickly, get the children to add their decoration of choice to each apple. Leave to set on the baking parchment for 15 minutes.

Toft Country House Hotel and Golf Club The winds of change are blowing through a popular leisure and hospitality facility just outside of Bourne, with a new leaseholder at Toft Country House Hotel and Golf Club. Tom Munt (36) has long held a dream of being in charge of his own golf course which has now been realised, since early in September. A ‘First’ in ‘Leisure Management and Golf Studies’ was followed by fifteen years gaining experience in management of hotels and golf clubs, latterly at Saffron Walden Golf Club.

Meeting Tom, with his clarity of thought and charming, friendly manner, left me in no doubt that he is aware of the challenges ahead, (“The hotel is looking a bit tired”, he concedes), but he appears determined to make it a success.

Starting in the new year, and using local interior designer, Rebecca Undrell at Harland House, eight of the hotel’s twenty en-suite bedrooms will be part of the first refurbishment phase.

The restaurant, under the auspices of Head Chef, Rachael Horner, will also be coming under the spotlight, as changes will be taking place. Early November will see the new winter menu, created with Rachael’s experienced eye, with emphasis placed on locally-sourced quality produce at a competitive price.

Toft House Hotel has long been synonymous with its function facilities, and The George Suite continues to provide a most popular venue for wedding receptions, parties and Christmas gatherings. Events Coordinator, Laura Niblock, oversees this successful aspect of the Toft experience, whilst Tom is fortunate to be able to rely on Zoltan Komives’ expertise as his Hotel Manager.

There needs to be a synergy between all branches of a business like the one that Tom and his family, (wife Laura and daughters, Grace and Emily), have moved into. He is anxious that the Golf Club part of the operation and the Hotel and the Function Room, (on the other side of the main road!) are seen as complementary to each other, and will look to reinforce that connection, wherever possible.

Tom rues the fact that Golf Club membership has declined in recent years, and will strive his utmost to return it to its former glory. Swan Golf Designs, an Essex-based firm of architects with international credentials, are creating a fiveyear development plan for the course. Before that, however, Tom has already appointed another Assistant Greenkeeper, Darryn LLoyd, to accompany Head Greenkeeper, James Dair’s existing team, in keeping the course in pristine condition. One of its many benefits must be its fantastic all-year-round playing conditions. As there is such excellent drainage for all seasons, Toft is one of the few courses in this area to never need temporary “winter greens”.

“Toft is a fantastic little club”, Tom enthuses, pointing out the fact that the ladies have just won the Lincolnshire Ladies Golf Association Handicap League Final for the second year running, such a remarkable feat with such a small membership! “A big part of the appeal of golf at Toft is that it is just such a relaxing place to be,” Tom explains. “You get to play a very good course, have a bit of fun, and feel both welcomed, and also that you’re getting great value for your membership.”

Lest We Forget Imagine being told the devastating news that your son, your father or your partner had been killed in action on the battlefield...

On September 26th 1915, in the first days of the Battle of Loos, both Charles, aged 21, and Tom, 20, were killed … together!

Now try to imagine surviving as a widow in 1915 in West Deeping. Your two boys have joined the millions, marching off to war in France. Then, one day, a telegram arrives with the news you have been dreading - that not just one, but both of your sons have lost their lives in the same battle – and on the same day.

They were just two of more than 50,000 British casualties of what was only one of many bloody battles in the horrific war of attrition. Over the four terrible years of World War One, more than a million families across Britain and the Empire were to receive news that their loved ones had been killed - including more than fifty families in Deeping St James, two dozen in Market Deeping, two dozen more in Baston and eight in Langtoft. The guns finally fell silent at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

That was the terrible reality facing Isabella Lunn, who had already lost her husband Henry – the boys’ father. Their sons, Charles and Tom, were born at the family home in West Deeping. And when the national appeal went out for more recruits to fight ‘for King and Country’, the brothers followed most other young men from The Deepings area, as a generation responded to the call. Charles and Tom went together to Stamford and enlisted in the 8th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment. They were given consecutive Army numbers.

Tom, who was a year younger than Charles, became a Lance Corporal. Charles remained a Private. They trained together, and were sent off to the trenches together.

The Centenary of the Armistice this year is a special chance for all of us to say “Thank You” to the First World War generation – all those who served, sacrificed and changed our world – including brothers Charles and Tom Lunn. As members of the Royal British Legion say, whenever we gather together, “At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, We will remember them.”

Preparing for the Party Season

I

t seems no sooner have we packed our beachwear away, than we are seeing if the zip will still do up on our little black dress for the party season ahead.

I was reading some research recently that showed women spend more time preparing for the annual Christmas party season than for any other event in the year – including a friend’s wedding, New Year’s Eve, birthday parties or even a hot date.

I couldn’t help wondering if I have got something wrong over the years?

In my experience, Christmas is the season for a woman to be busy, but not necessarily with her own personal appearance. Christmas shopping, gift wrapping, food preparation, house decorating, school concerts and greeting card writing are all added to our “to do list”, along with additional socialising.

So, if you want to be a Christmas cracker this year, the secret is to plan ahead!

There is always time to make a difference, but you need to plan it in your diary. Start with a regular exfoliation and moisturise when you are in the shower in the morning, to keep your skin glowing

and make sure it’s ready for a lastminute spray tan if you need one.

Keep a good quality cuticle oil by the bed and put it on your fingers and toes each night, to encourage healthy nourished nails that will look good naturally if necessary.

Health On Christmas Eve, 2007, whilst on patrol in Afghanistan, Mark Ormrod was injured by an Improvised Explosive Device, (I.E.D), resulting in him becoming the UK’s first triple amputee from the conflict.

Since recovering from his injuries, he has become an award-winning author, with his autobiography ‘Man Down’, and now travels the UK and the world, sharing his story as a motivational speaker. He is a professional fundraiser for many different charities, a sponsored athlete, and also a husband to Becky and a father to Kezia, Mason and Evelyn.

In addition to this, as we plan the take HIGH INTENSITY LIVE to a national audience, our ‘National Charity Partner’ will be The Royal Marines Charity.

The most well-known locally is, of course, our very own Cassidy Little, soon to appear in six episodes of ‘Coronation Street’ no less! Cassidy has already agreed to help ‘narrate’ the event, and is the kind of huge character that will be a key part in creating a special atmosphere.

Then there is our main motivational speaker, and the man who will be formally opening the event for us: Mr Mark Ormrod.

Mark has very recently been competing in the 2018 Invictus Games in Australia (Between October 20th and 27th), as he did in 2017 in Canada, where he picked up the prestigious Jaguar Award for exceptional performance, determination and dedication. Mark was presented with the award at a star-studded closing ceremony, with Prince Harry and rock stars, Bruce Springsteen and Bryan Adams, closing the Games in style.

This adds to Mark’s four medals, after he collected two silver medals in the Indoor Men’s Rowing and two further bronze medals in the Men’s ISA 100M and 50M Freestyle Swimming events. A brilliant achievement, in this Mark’s first Invictus Games.

(We are sure that, by the time this article goes to print, Mark will have had even more success in the 2018 Games).

Siena, Italy Siena is often overshadowed by its neighbours, Florence and Pisa, and by the rolling Tuscan countryside with its famous vineyards.

Delft, The Netherlands Just 9km south of The Hague, this canal-threaded city – a ‘mini-Amsterdam’ of sorts – is the ultimate Dutch day-trip destination.

Famous as the hometown of Golden Age artist, Johannes Vermeer, it also boasts the Royal crypts and white-and-blue Delft earthenware. Visitors can still tour the workshops where this hand-painted pottery has been made since the 16th century. Otherwise, wander this serene, timeless city and stop for a canal side coffee to watch the world go by.

Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic Lined with a mix of Renaissance and Baroque homes, this unspoilt medieval marvel with its UNESCO-listed Old Town is a maze of twisting alleys, built around the extensive Cesky Krumlov Castle complex, which you can visit. Make sure to stop by the Gypsy Pub, too – one of the town’s liveliest places; it has live music and a vast selection of beer, (appropriately for this nation with the world’s highest beer consumption per head).

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany A short drive from Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart, this is one of Germany’s most charming destinations. Spend a day just wandering through its well-preserved medieval old town, which still has intact its 14th-century walls. Look over

Deepings S.C. Amongst the Medals at Matlock Deepings Swimming Club’s top squads came away with twenty-five medals from a high quality Derventio Excel Level 2 open meet in Matlock in midSeptember. Attracting swimmers from as far away as Gloucester and Redditch, the meet was an opportunity for many of the club’s elite swimmers to gauge their fitness levels at this early stage of the season.

medal performances came in the 400IM, 200m backstroke and 200m freestyle. Holly Leggott, Bethany Eagle-Brown and Lorna McGill all excelled in the 15/16yrs age group, and completing the girls’ medal haul was 11-year-old Lilly Tappern.

Medals were won across the age groups and in all events, with the girls just shading the boys by winning sixteen, including a hattrick of golds.

Tom Neal dominated the 17yrs/ over backstroke, powering his way to gold in the 50m and 100m events, whilst Louis Metselaar struck gold in the 50m backstroke. Jake Jungmann and Harry Cardell also made it to the podium in their events.

Swimming Club Head Coach, was delighted, commenting, “We’re only four weeks into the season and already I have swimmers hitting personal bests and showing some excellent skills.

Everyone should be proud of their performances.”

A Successful Summer of Skiing for Young Local Skiers Jasper raced in the Under 10 boys event and also secured third place after a great technical ski.

Twelve-year-old Lucy Blackwell and her eight-year-old brother Jasper, both from West Deeping, have had a great summer season of ski racing.

Since this race, Jasper has gone on to win the Eastern Region Ski Association’s summer league and to become the Eastern Region’s dry slope and overall champion for 2018 in his age category. Lucy, in her first season of senior racing, was third in the Under 14 girls league.

Back in August, both brought home bronze medals from the SnowSport England 43rd All England Artificial Dry Slope Championships in Silksworth, Sunderland. The courses set at this slalom event were exceptionally challenging, and saw a number of skiers unable to finish the first run. Lucy, who is in the younger half of the Under 14 girls, was determined to deliver two clean runs. Her reward was third place and to be the fourteenth fastest woman from a starting list of over forty experienced racers.

NOVEMBER Gardening Tips November is not the best of months to be spending time outside, as the days are getting shorter and the weather is on the decline. However, time spent in the vegetable plot now will pay off in the spring and make your job easier. Weeds never seem to stop growing but will slow down considerably over the winter months, so it is a good idea to clear them now so that they don’t get a head start in spring.

Make sure that the plot is clear of summer crops; don’t leave them to rot, as this can increase the risk of disease and harbour unwanted pests. November is a good time to give the soil some attention; if you wait any longer the soil could be waterlogged or too cold. Once you have cleared the weeds and any old crops, fork the soil over and add compost or manure to help replace nutrients in the soil. I then cover the area with either weed suppressant or plastic, which will keep the weeds at bay and the soil warmer for planting in the spring.

Another important task for November is pruning, as fruit trees and bushes have shed their leaves and are dormant for the winter; also remove any netting from fruit cages to allow the birds to eat insects and eggs. Bare-rooted fruit trees, bushes and canes are also dormant and therefore, now is the time to plant them whilst the ground is not too wet or cold.

Other tasks for this month include:• Propagate rhubarb crowns by lifting and dividing in to smaller pieces, planting at the same depth in their new position.

• Plan the crop rotation for next year. Planting one group of vegetables in the same ground, year after year, increases the risk of a build-up of disease. There are websites that provide planners; one such example is http://gardenplanner. suttons.co.uk • Dismantle bean canes, if you haven’t already, as leaving them in the ground will cause the bases to rot.

•

Leaf mould makes good mulch and at this time of year there are plenty to be had. You can easily make a cage to contain the leaves using four stakes and stapling chicken wire around them. Just throw the leaves in and leave them for a year to rot down. Or put them together with a bit of soil into a black plastic bag - make a few small holes.

• Start to harvest winter cabbage, Brussels sprouts, leeks and parsnips; wait until after a frost for the parsnips, as the frost encourages the sugars which give parsnips their sweetness.

• Plant garlic cloves, early “overwintering” broad beans, (either in the ground or in pots), peas, shallots and onions.

• Prepare a runner bean trench for all of your kitchen waste.

Asset Protection Trusts: Who to Trust

A number of clients have sought our advice on ‘Probate Trusts’ or ‘Asset Protection Trusts’, presumably as someone has attempted to sell these products to them. We are seeing a growing trend whereby a salesperson will offer a free initial legal consultation, often even in your own home. This special offer will be available for a short period and will sound too good to be missed.

We would not necessarily say that this is a scam, but our clients are right to be wary. If you do decide to take up the offer, then we would strongly suggest that a solicitor, regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, reviews the paperwork before you commit yourself. Trusts, when properly used, can be beneficial in certain circumstances, but advice should first be sought from a specialist.

In reality, ‘Probate Trusts’ can be of little or no benefit. A Grant of Probate (or likewise), is more often than not required in any event following death, regardless of whether the main home still belongs to the deceased or has been placed in a trust, and the cost of obtaining probate is not as expensive as you may think.

For ‘Protection Trusts’ used to allegedly reduce care home fees, if this involves placing your main home into trust and you continue to reside in the home, the full value of the home can

still be taken into account when the local authority make any care funding assessment. This is because the local authority may succeed in claiming that you deliberately deprived yourself of the asset to avoid or reduce the cost of funding for your own care.

Peterborough Cathedral to Host Classical Music Feast Peterborough Cathedral Choir and Youth Choir, the Cathedral Festival Chorus, Peterborough Choral Society and East Anglia Chamber Orchestra are joining forces for a special performance of Mozart’s Requiem and Joseph Haydn’s Little Organ Mass on Saturday November 10th.

The choirs and orchestra are combining together for the first time, and they will be under the direction of the Cathedral’s

Don’t Let a Life-changing Event Send You into Debt

Don’t Leave Your Elderly Neighbours in the Dark

A number of clients contacting Citizens Advice do so after either they, or their partner, suffers some sort of life-changing event, such as illness. If either party has to give up working, it is easy to fall behind on paying bills, so advice is centred around taking action as soon as possible, to avoid sliding further into debt. Firstly, clients are advised to see if they can make any savings on household bills by switching suppliers, or changing deals. They may be able to get a reduction on their Council Tax bill, and it is suggested they speak to their local authority directly. The second tip is to try to boost income – they may be able to apply for benefits jointly with a partner, which could be Income Support, Income-related Employment Support Allowance or Universal Credit.

At this point in the year, the clocks have gone back and we start to think more about winter – and the ideal time to get into the habit of keeping an eye on an older friend or neighbour. The winter months can be lonely and isolating for those who are less mobile; a knock at the door after dark can be frightening, and cold callers on the phone can leave the recipient feeling vulnerable. The situation isn’t helped by the many rogue traders who try to tout for work in the local area, often suggesting to the home owner that a roof or guttering are in need of repair before winter sets in. This can lead to vulnerable people parting with their cash and getting nothing but shoddy work and a huge dent in their savings in return.

Next, the advice is to contact creditors and ask if they can reduce repayments until they are back in work. Creditors can also freeze any interest and charges, so that debts don’t go up while people are paying back less each month. In any event, if people are still struggling to cover outgoings, it’s important to prioritise paying household bills like Council Tax and rent or mortgage.

For further help working out a budget, negotiating with creditors or checking which benefits people are entitled to, the advice is always to contact the nearest Citizens Advice. The Citizens Advice service in the Deepings includes a drop-in, fifteen minute assessment at the New Community Centre, Market Deeping, on Wednesday mornings, before an afternoon appointment if needed, or a referral to Deeping St James fortnightly on Thursdays, where the United Churches have generously funded an outreach at the Institute, on 38 Church Street, Deeping St. James.

Then there are phone scams, which may on the surface seem to be less intrusive, but are equally as dangerous. These can range from callers claiming to be from companies to check non-existent faults on your computer, banks claiming to check your account details and even so-called medical companies, suggesting the need for mobile aids, from electric chairs to stair lifts.

Share these tips with family and friends, and older relatives: • Be careful what you say about yourself on social media.

• Set your privacy settings.

• Keep your media profiles, such as Facebook and LinkedIn, to a minimum (your name), and don’t post your address or date of birth.

• Be very cautious about giving out personal information to people you don’t know – age, address, phone number etc.

•

In public places, make sure nobody can hear your conversations or look over your shoulder when banking, shopping or making other confidential online transactions.

What is Counselling?

R

ecently I was asked to give a talk on why counselling should replace mental health services. I initially accepted this invitation, and then when I got to thinking about what I was going to say, I started to think that the question was all wrong. Counselling shouldn’t replace mental health services, because it is part of mental health services.

However, when we hear the phrase ‘mental health’, what do we think? Schizophrenia, psychosis, bipolar, phobias, PTSD. Top-end issues, each with their own carefully attached label.

Or the ‘crazy’ person we see, wide-eyed weaving the streets who we think should be ‘locked up’. Or those with severe learning disabilities. Issues that are not ordinarily associated with counselling. And yet mental health covers everything from management of daily life to psychopathy. Counselling definitely fits in along that spectrum.

Over the last couple of years, the government has made promises about providing additional funding for mental health services, creating thousands of new jobs in the sector, including having a counsellor in every school. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry have fronted a mental health campaign. Sports stars, pop stars, stars of stage and screen, have all signed up to be involved, to encourage greater awareness of our mental health. And they are not just talking about the issues listed above.

They are encouraging us to engage with our day-to-day thoughts, feelings and emotions. That having a down day might be just that; we all have them and it’s okay to acknowledge it to someone. Or it might be because yesterday wasn’t great or something happened; that happens too, and it’s okay to acknowledge it to someone. Or it might be because we haven’t really talked about anything for years and we have ended up not being able to manage the everyday issues that are not usually a problem; the little things have become too much.

Talking about it is a positive thing to do, man or woman.

You might not have listened when your nan told you that “a problem shared was a problem halved”, but she was right.

Getting it out of your head, being heard, being listened to; that’s what counselling does. It’s not about being given a solution. It’s about finding out about you.

body changes. So, we are in a constant state of biological and psychological flux. And it can take a lot to manage that every day. So, whatever is going on in your mind, no matter how big or small it may seem, if it is there it is affecting you. If you want to let it out, whatever it might be, talk to a counsellor. We will listen.

I have been an addiction counsellor for ten years, mainly working using CBT, (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), methods.

However, it is my belief that building a relationship, which is the basis of Person Centred Therapy, underpins any other form of counselling.

Having worked with many individuals over the years, I understand that underneath there are many and varied issues.

These include childhood trauma, abuse, bereavement, as well as not coping with life in general. If issues like that are retained, then they will continue to drive choices and decisions, which is likely to see a continuation of the behaviour that brought the client to counselling in the first place.

Remembering World War 1 War poet, Wilfred Owen’s ‘Anthem for Doomed Youth’, written in 1917, includes the haunting image of soldiers “who die as cattle”, whilst facing the “monstrous anger of the guns” and the “stuttering rifles’ rapid rattle”. Later in the poem, he refers to the “bugles calling for them (the soldiers in the trenches of Northern France) from sad shires”.

As we look back, 100 years on from the ending of World War 1, we can think of the families left behind, as their menfolk answered the call to arms, and think just what the conflict must have meant for those ordinary people in ordinary places like Bourne and its surrounding villages, with the bugles sounding in our own shire – Lincolnshire.

The sheer scale of the casualties alone is one of the most humbling features of this “war to end all wars”. We have heard of literally millions of deaths - British and Commonwealth, German, French, Russian and many other nationalities caught up in the conflict. However, when we look much nearer to home, it soon makes us realise just what this war meant to small towns and villages hereabouts.

It is estimated that in Bourne alone, with its population of 4,343, (1911 census), around 250 men left the area to fight … and a staggering 46% failed to return! In almost every church in the vicinity, there are poignant memorials which illustrate just how universal was the devastation wreaked on communities, large and small.

The following list gives just a brief indication of how widespread were the effects of the war. The figures have been drawn from the actual memorials found in each of the village churches mentioned. However, it is likely that the true death toll was much higher, as research completed after the memorials had been erected often revealed discrepancies:

Carlby’s Proud Heritage: The Story of the Stooke Brothers came news of Frederick Stooke, 20, a Coldstream Guardsman, and his 18-year-old brother, Edgar, a Sherwood Forester in the Notts. And Derby Regiment, losing their lives.

Brother, Harold, was to be the only Stooke brother to enlist who actually made it home!

On a small marble plaque inside St Stephen’s Church, Carlby, near Bourne, are the names of seven servicemen who “gave their lives for home and country in the Great War”. Ernest Couzens, Edward Green and Frederick Holmes had all been local to the parish, and had made the ultimate sacrifice, along with thousands of other young men at the time.

What is particularly shocking about the other names on the plaque, however, is that they are all brothers, four of the eight sons born to John Robert and Christiana Charlotte Stooke of Carlby.

John was the one-time Headmaster of nearby Essendine School, (on the main Bourne to Stamford road, between Carlby and Essendine), whilst his wife was for a long time, landlady of The Plough public house, just opposite St Stephen’s, (and now a private residence). A further six daughters completed the Stooke family.

Frank Stooke, aged 30, resident of Belmesthorpe and in the Royal Engineers, died on May 16th 1915.

Brother, Arthur Augustus Stooke, in the Royal Flying Corps, was 27 when he died on January 3rd 1917, but more tragedy was to follow. Within a fortnight of each other, and towards the end of hostilities, in April 1918,

The number of lives lost, proudly displayed on a cold memorial plate, either in Bourne’s “Memorial Gardens” in South Street, or in any number of small churches throughout the countryside, here in South Lincolnshire, only serves to highlight the enormous scale of the conflict.

It’s only when we stop a moment and think of stories like this one of the Stooke brothers, however, that a real perspective can perhaps be placed on the horrors of what all families were having to endure, in this conflict which ended one hundred years ago this month.

Discovering . . . Church bells

T

he parish church has become a sign of faith in the English countryside and it is reckoned that you cannot drive more than a mile without seeing a slender spire or a battlemented tower peeping above the horizon, evidence of an enduring faith that has survived the centuries.

and royal events, and even to celebrate the end of war as they did several times during the last century.

The church spire soaring skywards declares the presence of the church at a distance and advertises its connection to heaven. The towers of our parish churches are intended to act as a beacon to direct the faithful to the house of God, a symbol of ecclesiastical authority, the place from which emanates the summons to the faithful to worship through the sounding of the bells which are housed there.

One of the most distinctive bell towers in Lincolnshire can be found at Market Deeping, part of the church dedicated to St Guthlac who spent his life in religious study, and is located at the west end of the nave, dominating the adjoining road which is appropriately known as Church Street where it can be seen by thousands who pass by each day. The building is now listed Grade I as being of architectural and historic importance, dating largely from the 15th century although the site was a place of worship long before because masonry discovered in the grounds indicates religious activity for some 800 years.

Church bells were first used by the Christian church in AD 400 and by the Middle Ages they had become common throughout Europe. Over the centuries their sound has become one of the most familiar in England, especially on a Sunday morning or evening, immortalised by the composer Albert Ketelby with his haunting melody Bells Across the Meadows which was published in 1921 and has since become one of the most popular pieces of classical music ever written.

St Guthlac’s has a peal of eight bells, the original six cast in 1766 having been re-hung in 1989 when the old oak frame had fallen into disrepair but were later augmented by a further two that were installed at a cost of £20,000 with the help of a grant from the Lottery Millennium Fund. They were first heard ringing out at harvest festival on 9th September 1998 and remain a popular feature of this South Lincolnshire market town.

Ear’s the Thing!

There is one thing that, as vets, we are guaranteed to see every day, and that is problematic ears. A recent survey of the most common conditions that owners have claimed against their pet insurance showed that allergies and ear disease were the most frequent. Allergies are understandable, as they are an aberration of the normal immune system and can only be contained with treatment, not cured. But ear disease? Surely, just a course of ear drops, and we’ve got it sorted. Well, of course, it’s not that simple.

The factors that make one animal more susceptible to ear disease compared to another are not fully known, but there are some predisposing features that mean that an animal is more likely to get ear disease. We all know the problem of long-eared dogs – Cocker Spaniels and Basset Hounds spring to mind. The long ears, designed to act as blinkers, pull the ear canal shut and stop free air circulation. Equally, dogs with wrinkly or flat faces such as the Sharpei and the French Bulldog have distorted ear canals. If your dog is a swimmer, then excess water in the ear can irritate the skin, and over-zealous cleaning or the use of cotton buds can predispose to ear problems. More frequently in

cats, polyps or benign tumours deep in the ear canal can be present.

Most initial causes of ear disease fall into two camps – parasites and allergies. We all know of ear mites which tend to be a parasite of the young puppy or kitten, but mites can also be a problem, so it is sensible if your pet has itchy ears to treat them with a prescription flea treatment that is also licensed against mites.

Your vets and nurses can advise on this.

Allergies in our pets tend to affect the skin and the digestive tract.

Amazingly, our pets can have allergic skin disease and initially it

only affects the skin in one ear.

After several years, the rest of the skin may become affected too.

It is only once the skin of the ear canal is itchy and red that bacteria and yeasts can dive in and cause the smelly discharging ears we expect of ear infections.

These infections can lead to chronic swelling of the ear skin, obliterating the canal altogether, and may even burst the ear drum and spread into the middle ear.

Most ear infections do respond to topical ear treatment but, unless the underlying causes are dealt with, the infections become recurrent.

Animals can become very head-shy when using ear drops as the ears can be very painful, but short courses of antibiotics are not enough, and the condition will only recur more frequently or worse, developing antibiotic resistance.

Oral medication can be useful, especially when the ear canals are closed up.

So, never ignore a pet with itchy ears. As always, prevention is better than cure

How Much Exercise Does My Dog Need?

As long as you’re both dressed for it, most dogs are happy to go out whatever the weather. Rain and even snow aren’t usually a problem (for your dog, anyway!) Dogs love a daily walk routine; walks should not just be something you do at weekends. If you can’t walk them yourself for some reason, ask a friend, or maybe a professional dog-walker, so your dog doesn’t miss out on a session.

• Dogs with short legs, generally, don’t need to walk as far as those with long legs.

• Running isn’t good for puppies as it can damage their joints.

• Some dogs will need restricted exercise. For example, dogs with arthritic joints usually need frequent short walks rather than one long one.

Walking your dog: top tips • Walks and games are much better treats for dogs than food treats.

• Exercise at your dog’s own pace. If your dog isn’t getting tired, or is still full of energy when you get home, they may need more exercise.

• Be careful not to overdo it. If your dog is struggling, gets home worn out, or refuses to go at all, you may need to cut back!

• Try to vary your route to keep your walks interesting and exciting for your dog.

• Always allow your dog to have a good sniff around. This is really important for their mental health.

• Keep dogs on a lead when exercising in built-up areas. Only let them off the lead when you are absolutely sure it is safe. It is also important not to let your dog loose where there are sheep or other livestock.
