Welcome to Your December Issue. What did Adam say to his wife on the day before Christmas? “It’s Christmas, Eve!” How come I’ve reached the age I am and have never heard this one before? Anyway, another Christmas fast approaching and our team of contributors continue to ensure that your favourite magazine is full of interesting features, advice and information to make your lead-up to the big day as enjoyable as possible. Thanks to them all and, on behalf of us all on the magazine, let me wish you the very best for a merry and peaceful Christmas, with a healthy and successful 2019 to follow. “What’s December’s issue looking like?” I hear you ask. As usual, wide-ranging and varied, with some serious events to read about this month, as we all commemorated the centenary of the ending of World War 1. Our usual advice providers, (covering aspects of health, the law, finance, pets, holidays and protection against rogue traders), continue to inform wisely, for which we thank them. With the small matter of Christmas only a few weeks away, the quiz takes on a festive look, whilst old chestnuts (sorry!) come out for their annual airing: What do you get if you eat Christmas decorations? Tinselitis. What do you call a lobster who won’t share any of his presents? Shellfish. Marks & Spencer say it wouldn’t be Christmas without M&S. They’re right – it’d be “Chrita”. I wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas, with good health and success on the way in 2019. Enjoy the read!

Eat the Season
mulled wine This festive favourite is easy to prepare and tastes like Christmas in a glass!
Method Ingredients Serves 6-8 people 2 bottles of inexpensive red wine 100g soft, light brown sugar 3 oranges, cut into 6 wedges 3 lemons, cut into 6 wedges 500ml orange juice 4 tsp whole cloves 2 tsp mixed spice 8 tea bags 2 whole cinnamon sticks 150g semi-dried prunes
• Place all the ingredients into a large saucepan (not aluminium) and gently heat, stirring occasionally so the sugar does not stick. • You’ll need 10 minutes preparation time, followed by 20 minutes cooking time. • Do not boil, or the mulled wine will lose its kick, as the alcohol evaporates! • Using a ladle, carefully pour the wine into sturdy glasses. Include a wedge or two of fruit, and a prune, in each glass.
Top Tips • You can give extra spice to the drink by adding a little extra sugar and a dash or two of brandy. • A white wine version is also an option, if your guests are not red wine lovers.

A Very Merry, Stress-free Christmas by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness
T
he seasonal joy of Christmas can come with a stocking full of stress. For many, it can be a source of anxiety, disappointment and loneliness. Here are my top tips on how to stay calm and happy and avoid festive fallout. Unplug – “Portion control” should not just be restricted to your diet. Use the time you have to relax and enjoy the beauty of this time of year. Whether you are getting together with family and friends or chilling on the sofa, completely savour the moments, instead of scrolling through social media or looking for your selfie stick. Say “No!” - Learning to say no can be a great way to reduce your stress levels. With pressure coming from all angles, it is important to remember that you don’t have to say yes to everything. Remind yourself that it is perfectly okay to turn down an invitation and have a night in instead. Try to reclaim some time for yourself to do the things you enjoy. Read a book, have a bath and spend time with different people and focus on the positives. Accept what you can’t change There are some things you simply cannot change. Other people’s behaviour, for example, is hard to control and so, where you can, when irritations arise try to let them go. If socialising with certain people is going to affect your
mental health, then try to keep it to a minimum! Those gifts! - Pressure to show everyone how much you love them by the value of, or time spent shopping for, the gifts you give is not only futile, but leads to increased pressure and stress. Consider purchasing gift vouchers or invites to spend time with your loved ones in the New Year instead. This gives everyone something to look forward to and means you can stay within your budget.
Take charge - One of the main causes of stress is the feeling that you cannot control a particular situation. Try to plan your commitments and time so you have plenty of advance notice and can delegate responsibilities if you need to. Organise your diary now so you have time to purchase and deliver gifts without rushing and adding extra stress to your schedule. Make sure you diarise events for your
own personal wellbeing, whether it be going to the gym, attending a class, having your hair or nails done or meeting a friend. These are usually the first things to go when you are under pressure. Don’t be afraid to ask for help Try sharing responsibility between family members rather than taking on everything yourself. If everyone has a job they are responsible for, no one family member will carry the whole burden. Children can help making name places or laying the table, everyone can peel some vegetables, or help serving drinks. This gets everyone involved and makes it FUN! Conversely, not everyone has an abundance of friends and family around them over Christmas. It is perfectly reasonable to accept that this may be a difficult time of year. If you don’t enjoy all the traditions of Christmas, make a plan to do something that day that you do really enjoy. If you would like to be socialising over Christmas, then don’t be afraid to accept invitations if you are asked. Have a look at local events that are going on, such as the Salvation Army or soup kitchens, where you can either attend yourself or volunteer to help. What is a Gym? (or more importantly) - What is Empire Gym? by Matt Weston
Even now, almost five years into our quest to change the very meaning of what it is to be a gym, people, who live locally, still walk in and ask what we are about. People still ask… Is it a place to which I could belong? Is it all men? What is the atmosphere like? Will I be able to get on equipment? They assert … I don’t really like gyms because I went to this big chain gym and nobody spoke to me; Other gyms are untidy and smell funny and the staff don’t acknowledge me; The equipment doesn’t work and isn’t serviced. Then I will talk to them. Initially, not about exercise, but about what we stand for. Making sure you feel known, and that you feel comfortable, initially just doing something you enjoy. Making sure that you feel at home, enough to realise that the secret to Empire is that we make the conditions for your progress and happiness right. We show you that actually, you can come here and do whatever you like. You have nothing to prove to me, the other members or society in general. You just need to be happy, even if that means spending fifteen minutes walking on a treadmill four times a week and going home. Your journey is your own. And once you are exposed to the Empire effect for long enough, conditions will create a ‘pull’ from you to want to know more - to want to expand your experience. I then tell people that we will perform a gym induction, if you would like one, to make sure you have somewhere to start, and that you do it safely. But in fact you should watch our other members. Talk, listen, learn, copy. Indeed they will probably learn something from you too. And amongst a membership of over six hundred people who create a tapestry of personality, there are those who punctuate the very meaning of what it means to be here. Charlotte Pennells. in childbirth who is currently in a wheelchair. We together are aiming to have her completing High Intensity Circuits next year. And she will do it. She trains in and out of her chair at Empire. Steve Marsh. Another training in his chair, as he is a T6 Complete paraplegic after a mountain biking accident. Empire members raised £750 for Steve back when he suffered his injuries in 2016. Steve is now in the gym training. Tom Neale, who suffers with, but defies, Cerebral Palsy and completes weekly PT sessions with my brother Dave. Stuart Zwetsloot. A brilliant young man with Downs Syndrome who is indeed part of the Empire furniture. He trains in the gym every day and has Personal Training every Friday. Of course … Cassidy Little. One leg, but the world’s biggest personality. Former Royal Marine Commando, Winner of the People’s Strictly Come Dancing and Coronation Street actor. A Sunday Circuit regular. Jenny Locke. 77 years old with Parkinson’s Disease. In the gym like clockwork every day at 10am. Rowing, walking, biking. Determined and happy and improving her symptoms. Remember too that amongst this great community of exercisers there are people battling mental obstacles too. Some of these people we know of and quietly offer a word of support and encouragement when the time is right. Others I’m sure have never spoken of their battles but find solace in the Empire family atmosphere. It is an inspirational and safe haven. So the picture builds. Empire is unique, quite special in fact. Only those who are here to experience it will truly know.

I guess much of this was brought to mind again on seeing recent news of the plans for a new leisure facility in the Deepings in the next few years. I applaud this and hope the facility is everything the Deepings community deserves. As yet, nobody has asked our opinion about it in terms of planners and organisers, but let me put on record... Empire Gym would love to be the company that helps, consults or indeed provides the ‘gym and classes’ arm of any such facility. We know the community. We know how to do it. And we do it well. If you take the less emotive facts and put them forward to support the qualitative qualities of Empire, the case becomes even more compelling. Over 50% female membership.

You may have already decided what it may be … weight loss, healthy eating, a new family goal. Having a goal is great and wanting to achieve it is wonderful. But what if you can’t? DECEMBER Gardening Tips Well, we are already in December and coming up to the shortest day, which means that we are on our way to the next season. However, over the next two to three months we tend to see some of the worst weather; however, there are always jobs that can be done in the garden or allotment. Some gardeners put their allotment or vegetable patch “to bed” for the winter by covering the ground in plastic sheeting, or weed suppressant to keep weeds at bay: it also keeps the ground a little warmer for early spring planting and prevents heavy rain from washing away the soil’s nutrients. Before putting the covering down, it is worth digging the plot well and adding plenty of well-rotted organic material. There are one or two crops that you can still plant, such as garlic (if the soil is not frozen or waterlogged); new crowns of rhubarb or existing ones, divided and re-planted; bare-root fruit trees and bushes; and raspberry and blackberry canes. To divide rhubarb, lift the crown and, with a sharp spade, divide it into sections, each with a bud. Re-plant each section, in well-manured ground, with the bud just showing. Some jobs to do this month include: • Continue topping up compost and leaf mould bins. • If you intend to grow peas or beans next year, dig in plenty of organic matter as they require nutrient-rich soil. • Lift the last of your carrots, turnips and beetroot and put a mulch of straw around parsnips to prevent them being frozen into the ground. • As long as the soil is not frozen you can continue winter digging. • Earth up Brussels sprouts stems to keep them secure from strong winds and remove any brown or yellow leaves. • Make sure your winter brassicas are netted to prevent pigeons eating them. • Keep picking leeks and parsnips but, if the weather is very wet, check that the leeks are not getting water-logged and rotting. • December is the ideal time to prune apples and pears, gooseberries and currants. Autumn raspberries can be pruned right back to ground level between now and February. If you feel the need to do some jobs you can always check over your tools in the shed to make sure that they are safe and fit to use next season. Clean the metal and wipe it over with something like 3 in 1 oil. Clean and wipe down all wooden handles with linseed oil. It not only preserves the wood but makes them more comfortable on the hands. Check for pests and diseases on any produce in store, especially for rat and mouse damage. Have a happy Christmas and a well-earned rest after a good year on the vegetable patch. Rotary Support for St Barnabas Caring Rotarians have donated money to a Lincolnshire hospice charity to provide help and support for terminally ill patients. The Rotary Club of the Deepings has given £360 to St Barnabas Hospice, which is equivalent to the cost of three sessions of hospice-at-home care provided by the charity. Community Fundraiser for the charity, Vikki Allen, said: “St Barnabas Hospice are delighted to receive a cheque for £360 from the Deepings

Stay Merry, not Miserable in the Run-Up to Christmas
Consumer Rights With Christmas coming up, many people are looking to buy different presents online, so this month, Citizens Advice suggests that it’s a good idea to check consumer rights first. If you’re buying from an online trader, your rights are the same as if you were buying from any other online store. In other words, you normally have up to fourteen days after receiving your goods to change your mind and get a full refund. If there is a problem with your item within the first thirty days from when you bought it, you could get a refund, replacement or repair. Also, if it can’t be repaired or replaced, then during the first six months, in most cases, you’re entitled to a full refund. If you should have a problem, first contact the seller to try to resolve the issue. Also, check the online marketplace’s terms and conditions. These will sometimes offer you more protections. If the seller arranged delivery, and the item hasn’t turned up, or was delivered to the wrong location, it’s the seller’s legal responsibility to sort out the issue. Some traders belong to an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) scheme, which means they offer a way to solve your problem without going to court. The Citizens Advice Service in Bourne takes place at Wake House, on Thursdays between 10am and 3pm. Clients are offered a five minute initial check, followed by an appointment at a later time or date, if appropriate. In the Deepings, the Service includes a drop-in fifteen minute assessment at the New Community Centre, Market Deeping, on Wednesday mornings, before an afternoon appointment if needed, or a referral to Deeping St James fortnightly on Thursdays, where the United Churches have funded an outreach at the Institute, on 38 Church Street, Deeping St James.

Some tips for a safe and happy festive season: • Don’t leave presents in full view – either in the home or on the back seat of the car. • Shorter days mean a longer time for thieves to be in operation – always lock your car and front door when entering your home. • Keep a light on indoors and outdoors if you are out visiting friends or family. • It may be an idea to fit some motion detector security lighting – it won’t just be carol singers who come calling. • Keep your personal data safe – and securely dispose of receipts. • If you are expecting parcels or deliveries whilst you are away from home, try and arrange for them to be delivered to an alternative address instead of them being hidden by the bins! • If buying bikes and / or electronic equipment for Christmas – mark them with your postcode

William Hildyard Children’s Creative Remembrance This year, to commemorate Remembrance Day, William Hildyard Church of England Primary and Nursery School created a beautiful display of one hundred poppies. Children from across the school were involved

What could they have done better? In all honesty I do not believe I could have received any better help and advice than that offered to me by the adviser; extremely thorough and clear.

Don’t Let Your Workstation Damage Your Health!
M
any day-to-day aches and pains can be attributed to an ill-fitting ‘workstation’. As osteopaths, we see a range of posture-induced problems every day. The way these present varies from person to person, but some familiar symptoms can include: difficulty or stiffness turning your head, which you may first notice perhaps when trying to reverse the car; heavy tired arms with pain around the tip of the shoulder extending towards the elbow; sometimes, poor work postures can end up with you hunching forwards, producing mid back ache and aggravating your lower back too, so you find it harder to get out of the chair and straighten up.
Some Postural-Savvy Tips. Tip 1 - Get ready for the day: Take a moment to think about your work posture and workstation layout. It will take less than a minute – which is nothing compared to the hours you’ll spend sat there. Use a post-it note to remind yourself each day. Tip 2 – Check your posture: • Does the chair’s lumbar support fit the curve of your back? If not, consider an additional ‘slide in’ lumbar support, or try a rolled-up towel placed into the small of your back. These can really prevent you slouching. • Adjust your chair and screen height so that the top of your screen is level with your eyes. • Make sure your feet can be placed flat on the floor. If not, get a footrest. • If your chair has arms, adjust their height so that your elbows and forearms rest upon them lightly. Tip 3 – Organise your desk: • COMPUTER SCREEN - Should be directly in front, with no need to twist your body or neck to look at it. • KEYBOARD - Should be directly in front of you and far enough away to allow most of your forearms onto the desk

too. MOUSE - Should be in easy reach. Keep frequently-used items nearby to avoid repetitive over-reaching. • TELEPHONE - Should be positioned on the same side as your dominant hand to avoid over-reaching. If you use a handset regularly, consider a hands-free kit, and never clutch the phone between your ear and shoulder! Tip 4 – Give yourself a screen break! Try and drag yourself away from the screen for at least five minutes each hour. Find an activity that gets you onto your feet and moving about. Tip 5 – Motion - If you can’t get out-and-about, then try simple stretches whilst sat at your desk. Stretching is a low impact method of exercise which increases blood flow, flexibility, tone and your general performance – it will increase both physical and mental productivity, and reduce those desk-related aches and pains. • Don’t leave presents under your Christmas tree if they are visible from windows or doors.
Things to remember over the Christmas period: • Stay alert and be aware of what’s going on around you when you’re shopping, especially in busy shops and crowded streets where thieves and pickpockets may well be operating. • Keep valuables in inside pockets of clothing or bags. Keep a close watch on them, and try not to keep them all in one place. If you have to keep presents in the car, make sure they are out of view in the boot, the car is locked, and keep the receipts with you. • Try and avoid taking young children into busy shopping areas. If it is unavoidable, make sure they know what to do if they lose you, for example: tell the nearest counter assistant that they are lost and never leave a shop without you. Agree a meeting point with older children, in case you get separated. • Keep car doors locked whilst driving in built-up
• Make your house look occupied; use a timer switch to operate lamps as it starts to get dark, and leave a radio on. • Don’t open the door to anybody you don’t recognise. Not sure? Don’t open the door! Burglars and robbers know that many households have new and often expensive, items in their homes following the December holidays, especially items such as tablets or laptops, mobile phones, music systems, televisions, cameras and other electronic equipment. In many cases, residents make it easy for burglars to figure out which homes to target by putting boxes that identify their new gifts in plain view with their other rubbish.

Pets, Brexit and Beyond change in the current legislation surrounding pet passports. Your pet dog, cat or ferret will need to be micro-chipped before it can be given a rabies vaccine and issued with a pet passport. It will be twentyone days before you can travel across Europe. On returning to Britain, dogs will need a tapeworm treatment, twenty-four to onehundred-and-twenty hours upon entering the U.K.
Over the past two years a new word has entered our language, separating our population into two distinct camps, and that word is ‘Brexit’. Breaking the ties with Europe may be the desire of some, but the resultant ‘spaghetti-ball’ of red tape is affecting us all and, even in the world of pets, uncertainty reigns. Recently, the government has informed vets of the possible effects of a “No-deal Brexit” on the movement of pets across Europe. So, if you have a pet passport, or planning to get one, the following information is important for you. The simplest possible outcome that the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, (DEFRA), can negotiate with the European Union is that there will be no
A second possible outcome is that the above regulations will apply but, within ten days of travel, an official veterinarian will need to issue a health certificate in addition to the pet passport. A health certificate will be required every time you wish to travel to Europe with your pet and, on arrival in the E.U, you will need to report to a Travellers’ Point of Entry.
The most complicated possible outcome will be to return almost to the pre-passport days. In this case, a rabies injection is given after microchipping, but a blood test is required thirty days later to ensure that the rabies vaccination has taken full effect. There will be a three month wait before travel is allowed, so a minimum of four months of planning is required. If the blood test comes back showing the vaccine has not had the required effect, the whole process will need to be repeated. An official veterinarian would again need to issue a health certificate for every journey abroad, when all the requirements have been met. The decision on a Brexit deal or no-deal will be in March 2019, so if you are planning to travel with your pet to Europe after this date, you need to start considering the above information right now. You may decide that the most complicated outcome is likely and will need to have a blood test for your pet in December this year, or you may decide that the first option will happen, and you need do nothing. Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer and there won’t be one until the March deal. Therefore, let’s hope for the easiest solution, but prepare yourself for the most complicated one!

Discovering . . . the Deeping Stage

T
he sight of a stagecoach today is largely confined to Christmas cards, a romanticised version of travel from centuries past showing a ruddy-faced driver and a collection of merry passengers heading off to celebrate the festive season whereas reality was very different. Stagecoaches made their appearance on England’s roads in the 17th century when travel was extremely uncomfortable because of cramped seating and hazards such as mud, potholes and puddles, and also dangerous with the possibility of being held up by highwaymen such as Dick Turpin who made rich pickings from passengers until apprehended and hanged in 1739. But by 1743, eight stagecoaches were passing through Market Deeping each day with the result that roadside inns were established along the route to give rest and refreshment for horses and passengers, thus making it an important staging point between

London and the north and the cross country route between Boston and Stamford. The coming of the railways in the 19th century sounded the death knell for stagecoach travel and by 1850 they had gone although many of the old coaching inns remain in business, usually identified by the archways which allowed the coaches to pass through into the stable yard behind the inn where an ostler was waiting to help with the horses. The oldest of these in Market Deeping is the Bull Inn on the north side and dating from the early 17th century and although much altered over the years still contains a wealth of period detail including the open semi-circular moulded coaching archway on the front. Across the road was the New Inn, built of limestone with a Collyweston slate roof in 1802 when it was advertised as providing “well fitted commodious accommodation for the nobility, gentry and commercial travellers together with ample T H E

stabling”, attracting clientele from coaches travelling to and from London via the Great North Road (now the A1 trunk road). The inn is now known as the Deeping Stage and that distinctive coaching arch has been enclosed, leading to an extension of the bar area following a £30,000 modernisation programme in 1974-75 which took nine months to complete to coincide with the name change although much of the original stonework and beams were retained as were the boot scrapers on each side of the doorway into the bar. Both buildings have been listed Grade II since 1968 which means that they are protected for the future as being of special architectural and historic importance and a continuing reminder of the stagecoach days of yesteryear.
