Introduction

Welcome to Your February Issue. And so, hold on tight, here comes Valentine’s Day! “Love is in the air/ Everywhere I look around/ Love is in the air/ Every sight and every sound”, so sang John Paul Young in 1978. However, I think these words from the French author, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, strike a more romantic tone: “Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction”. Whilst you’re all “looking outward” then, I hope you all enjoy our February issue, where there are plenty of ways in which you can make the most of this romantic month, especially the music quiz!

Claire x

Welcome to “February fill-dyke” and, to coin an old adage, “February fill dyke, be black or be it white; be it white, ‘tis better to like.” (In other words, rain and snow are both welcome this month, although snow is preferable.) We’ve already got early showings of snowdrop and celandine, with daffodils not far behind, so I’m not too sad if we’ve already had our winter’s complement of snow. As ever, our contributors have brought together a whole host of golden, not daffodils, but ideas and recommendations instead, to make this year’s Valentine’s Day your best ever. And finally, cringe-time : Why can’t humans hear a dog whistle? Because dogs can’t whistle. What do you say to a friend struggling with their grammar? “There, their, they’re”. Enjoy the read!

The Virtual Revolution

by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness

W

e all know the deal – watch what you eat, follow a fitness routine and, if it is within your budget, join a gym or hire a personal trainer and you will lose weight, look good and feel great. There is no doubt that this plan of action will work. The problem is that most of us have a hard time sticking to this ideal. Busy lifestyles, lack of sleep or energy, or loss of motivation usually kick in at some point to throw us off our accomplished health routines. Finding suitable appointment times or attending specific class times can be a challenge. What does it take, most of us wonder, to achieve results that can last, and not break our budget? Welcome to the world of virtual training! Virtual training is doing a fitness routine with your fitness coach at a time that fits in with you, without the burden of paying high fees or being limited to specific days and times. Many of these programmes are available for you to do at home, and this can be a great option if you have both the space and the equipment. Renu are taking this one step further, offering you a virtual personal trainer and unlimited virtual cycling classes in our fully-equipped and airconditioned gym!

Indoor cycling classes have become increasingly popular over the past few years. A motivational instructor and some great music can see you through a calorieburning workout that is both enjoyable and gives great results. Now you can drop in, pick up some bluetooth headphones, select a workout of your choice, and get started! You can become part of the virtual class on screen or gather a few friends to workout together. Simple! There is no initial outlay, and you can pay per session, or enjoy unlimited gym and virtual spin usage for just £20 per month. Regular virtual appointments with your fitness coach keep you on track, pushing you with ongoing support and encouragement to

achieve desired results. Our gym membership now gives you access to our member zone where you can access your personal trainer at any time, anywhere. This doesn’t make real live personal training obsolete though. Clearly, there may be times when you want or need some more specialist advice and we have a team of qualified personal trainers that can be booked for this purpose. As you work on your New Year’s resolutions this year, remember to use all available resources to help you achieve desired results. Virtual fitness training is one convenient and affordable resource that can bring you to real success.

February. A Time of Clarity. A Time to Re-calibrate. by Matt Weston

February is upon us. Filled with optimism and opportunity. A fantastic time of year. The first month of the year without a ‘sales pitch’ after Christmas advertising is long gone and the new year resolution conversation only lives with those who really meant it, and who are digging in to the reality of the tasks they have promised themselves to achieve. Indeed, in that respect, February is a sobering month and one of seeing life in its true colour. A month that allows you to have time with your own mind and to decide on your own terms what things, jobs, tasks and achievements really matter to you. A time of clarity and a perfect time to re-calibrate. It’s also a time, in my opinion, to plan. Modern society likes to talk about time as being scarce and at a premium. “Time must not be wasted”, “You must act now”; and in some ways I agree with this assertion. It is much more powerful to act than to overthink and procrastinate. But it is also true to say that a week is a long time - if it is used properly. So, this month, my advice is to decide. To decide to listen to the hundred fleeting thoughts, plans and aspirational ideas that passed through your consciousness in January and to decide to make one of them happen. Pick one. Then, decide when you are going to set some time aside to work on it and diarise that time. Then… do it. Use the time. Research, learn, DO! And forget about the rat race. Or indeed any race!!! What exactly is the rat race anyway? It seems to

6

D I S C O V E R I N G

me that it is an imaginary place, a plateau that people create in their mind. And upon this plateau we are all competing with one another, but we assume that everyone else is one step ahead and already winning and that we don’t have time to invest time in the things that we personally really want to do, as we are too busy trying to catch up or stay in the ‘race’. That simply isn’t true. Of course I hope everyone is winning. It is healthy, and in my mind essential to celebrate others’ success. To bring people’s successes to light at every opportunity is a joy and a demonstration of one’s confidence and security. But that’s exactly the point. Everyone is running their own race, and it has absolutely nothing to do with yours. You are not in competition with anyone and you are not nearly as much in competition with ‘time itself’ as you think. If you decide to take a week, even if it means taking a week off ‘work’, if work means a job that you do for a company; that week could bring such clarity, such perspective, such pleasure. And most probably, it will show you that what you really want to do is a reality. It is possible. It could be the week that changes

your life. Yet you keep putting it off. And you have time! If you are twenty you have a lifetime and then another, and another! If you are thirty, the same is true. If you are forty, you are in the prime of your life with enough experience and again, a whole lifetime of opportunity ahead... sixty years at least! And let me tell you this… if you are fifty, sixty, seventy or eighty you still have so much time! For what has gone has passed. Life moves only one way and there is such joy and excitement in living it, in taking risks, in doing and failing, and doing and failing again. I’m thirty-eight. And I haven’t even started yet! I am filled with so much drive, hope and optimism that nothing will stop me. I’ve failed at every junction and I love it! Because there’s nothing better than living, learning and going again! Tasha and I are now parents to a five-monthold beautiful little boy and we have already decided that he takes his own path, in any or every direction, and that he will be encouraged to try and fail, try and fail, as he will then fall into the lap of his family who will help him try again. I’ve had that same luxury from my own wonderful parents, and Tasha is that pillar now, and I hers, and we won’t

let each other down in supporting each-other’s aspirations. I also want to say thank you to everyone who reads these passages every month. I get such lovely feedback from people, at the gym, in the supermarket, in the street, and yes, in the pub. It makes such a difference to know people are reading them and enjoying them. The written word is a passion of mine and I find it fascinating to see how and where people absorb it, in a world where digital and social media are set to grow and grow and dominate people’s attention. To that end, I want to give you an opportunity to feed back, as there is no ‘comments section’ here.

So please, I want your questions and thoughts. It can be about the gym. About broader exercise and fitness topics or indeed about anything at all that my articles have caused you to think about. I will respond to them in the March magazine. Simply e-mail me directly, using mattweston@empiregyms. com putting ‘Discovering Deeping Questions’ in the title bar. If there is anyone out there who has a specific question about the gym or exercise and they want to ask it anonymously, then just let me know that you don’t want your name to be used, and I will of course honour that. I want it to be a way of peeling away any remaining barriers. So that, if you haven’t yet stepped in to

Empire Gym, or any gym anywhere for that matter, you can ask some of the questions you have always wanted to ask before you do. If you have any questions about how we run the business, both with Empire Gym and the new High Intensity Live fitness event, and what we do behind the scenes and the things we have learned, I’d love to answer those questions too. And finally, anything about motivation, goal setting, or starting small businesses. These are all my passions and I would love to get into some meaningful two-way dialogue. Thank you all so much.

The Little People Matter Too...

by Nicole Woodcock, Hummingbird Hypnotherapy

Having two small children myself under the age of seven, I am all too aware of the joy life brings having a couple of ‘mini me’s being around … including those trying moments where deep breathing and counting to ten are just not enough! Alongside spending the last eight years working with children with additional needs, I am more than aware of the challenges that come along that children find really difficult on a day-to-day basis, without then adding the additional need. A lot of children I see find it difficult to communicate their needs and this is usually exacerbated further by anxiety, stress and worry. Conquering difficult environments, crowds, friendships, school and home can all become too much, resulting in anger, depression, low self-esteem, lack of confidence and negative self-belief, to name but a few. Add a daily dose of social media, comparing ourselves to others, and searching for any topic imaginable at the touch of a button, or using tablets as a form of communication or distraction, we then add blue light into the mix. This can affect concentration, sleep and our natural endorphin levels. A few tools to support you within the family home can help: ● Ask your children what’s been good? Focus on the positive parts of their day. Use it as a tool to ask each other at the dinner table and share your achievements. ● Go out with them and buy a note book and pen. Get them to write or tell you three good things about their day before they go to bed. This enables them to get a serotonin boost which allows them to relax and promote sleep-inducing melatonin. ● Turn off tablets and phones an hour before bed. Allow the mind time to quieten down.

● Take a walk, scoot, bike, skate, anything active, each day. Even just ten minutes a day can make a difference. Elevate mood and increase positive thought. Just doing these few things each day will boost positivity and serotonin levels for everyone, not just children. If your child has difficulty relaxing, worries and finds things overwhelming, I run a weekly relaxation class every Thursday at 3.45pm in The Wild Orange, Corby Glen and Friday 5.15pm in room 23, Wake House, Bourne. Kalm KIDZZ is half an hour of time-out and positive relaxation. I also see children on an individual basis for a wide range of issues. Solution focused hypnotherapy is great for children too. For further information please visit www.hummingbirdhypnotherapy.co.uk Positive thoughts,

Nicole.

Sacro-iliac Joint problems

by Philip Hakim, Registered Osteopath, Owner of the Wellhead Practice

F

ound at the lower end of the spine, the Sacroiliac joints (SIJ) connect the sacrum (a triangular shaped bone at the base of the spine) to each of the larger outer pelvic bones (ilia) to make the pelvis complete. They act as shock absorbers allowing movement and body weight to be transferred in a smooth and controlled manner from the upper body through to the legs and vice versa.

Possible causes of injury: SIJ injuries are not unusual. The more traumatic causes can include a fall onto your side such as a miss-timed sliding tackle, or slipping and landing onto your bottom. Less dramatic reasons include repetitive weight bearing activities such as running, jumping, dancing or gymnastics for example. In practice, a common cause is a sudden jolt to the pelvis such as missing a step or dropping into an unseen hole in the ground whilst walking the dog. A rounded or slouching posture can also be a triggering factor. Symptoms: Pain is usually felt on one side of the lower back often localised to the dimpled area just below your waistband. You may feel discomfort in the buttock, lower abdomen or groin regions too. Some patients report a sense that the affected leg feels a slightly different length or that

it even drags or doesn’t swing properly when they walk. Occasionally the front of the thigh feels achy or appears to burn if they have been on their feet too long. Rest can be a relief although you can end up feeling slightly stiff afterwards and turning over in bed can be painful too. Treatment options: In my experience, most SI problems respond really well to manual treatment. Using techniques to decompress or re-align the joints and straighten the pelvis can work really well to restore normal joint movement. Soft tissue massage and stretching can then reduce the localised muscle spasm and encourage a healthier blood flow to the tissues. This helps to drain away any inflammation built up and speed up the recovery. Muscle re-education can then strengthen the surrounding areas or correct any postural imbalances that may be contributing and reduce the likelihood of a reoccurrence. Sometimes a special pelvic belt or sports taping is useful to stabilise the joint for a while.

What Does Coach Travel Look Like in 2019? Gone are the days of the ‘Summer Holiday’ singalong, smoky saloons and a bumpy ride! In 2019, the phrase “sit back, relax and enjoy the view” really does mean something. More and more of us are choosing to make the most of what this country has to offer; domestic overnight stays are on the increase, with over a quarter of the country taking an overnight trip in the UK during the festive season! As a nation, we’re ready and waiting to see new things and experience new places, but we want to do it in style! With over six thousand brand new coaches on the road last year and top manufacturers like Mercedes significantly investing in their design, there’s never been a better time to try travelling by coach. As a leading tour operator, we’re proud to own a fleet of luxury coaches fit for 2019 travellers. With reclining seats, individual air cooling, on board toilet, hot and cold drinks station, foot rests, arm rests and air suspension on most vehicles, coupled with conveniently timed rest stops and compulsory safety belts, today’s traveller can be confident of a comfortable, relaxing and safe journey. Destinations have changed too, with exciting new visitor attractions opening all the time and greatly improved facilities at old favourites! Visit a city centre and you’re guaranteed to find something interesting, thrilling,

delicious or unusual. Take the beautiful, ancient, walled city of York as an example. Here, you’ll find everything from The Jorvik Viking Centre to the Chocolate Story, the Dungeons, the Castle Museum and the (free-to-enter) National Railway Museum, as well as exciting annual events like the Christmas Market, Food Festival, Dark Skies Festival and Ice Trail. There really is something for everyone, everywhere! With Brexit looming and warmer weather continuing to grace our island (believe it or not!), coupled with car parking becoming increasingly expensive and difficult to find, coach travel to our home-grown tourist hot spots has never looked more attractive. As coaches modernize and the world around us changes, there’s one thing that we’re proud to say has never altered – our approach to customer service. Customer satisfaction has remained our top priority since ‘Grandad Shaw’ bought our first coach in 1922 - some things are just better left as they are! #supportlocal #trysomethingnew

Schools’ Rock Band Takes to the Road Children taking their musical talent out of school to entertain the local community are receiving positive support from their South Kesteven District Councillor. Market and West Deeping Councillor, Ashley Baxter, has donated a £300 Ward Member Grant to help the Joint Schools’ Rock Band’s continued success. It involves youngsters from several primary schools in the area getting together for regular rehearsals ahead of public performances around their patch. Director of Music at Deeping St James Community Primary School, Sarah Young, said: “We’ve created a joint schools’ rock band here, involving seven local primary schools. Children from each school come and rehearse here at Deeping St James every two weeks and then go out into the community to perform. Their

recent event was the Deepings Christmas Market where they played a number of seasonal favourites, including ‘Run Run Rudolph’ and ‘Jingle Bells’. Next, they will be starting their summer programme ahead of the Deeping St James Rose and Sweet Pea Show, and they will also be touring all their school to perform.” The children play guitars, keyboards and drums to support their vocals, and the Ward Member Grant will help pay for musical equipment. The school PTA has already donated £500 towards equipment over the last year. Cllr Baxter said: “The band is going from strength to strength and has received plenty of plaudits from its performances so far. It’s a pleasure to be able to

help a project like this, which is great for socialising and making new friends between the schools as well as the children having fun while making their music.” The other schools involved are Linchfield Community Primary School, Market Deeping Community Primary School, William Hildyard Church of England Primary, Baston C of E Primary, Langtoft Primary School and St George’s Church of England Primary School in Stamford.

Rose Lodge Care Home Make Sweet Wishes Come True As part of Country Court Care’s ‘Make a wish’ initiative, residents at Rose Lodge Care Home in Market Deeping hosted a fabulous dessert club recently. The Well-being and Activities Coordinators at the Care Home were tasked with asking each resident what their wish would be; Kit, a dessert lover, suggested sharing her passion with local people and wanted to host a dessert club. Everyone was invited to bring in their favourite home-made pudding for people to share. Friends and family joined residents to sample the dishes f e brua ry 2019

to infuse extra flavour into the cake.

which included cheesecake and salted caramel cake. The dessert that was voted everyone’s favourite was a chocolate poke cake, baked by Kit’s daughter-in-law. As its name suggests, a poke cake has holes poked into it after baking, and a filling is added

“It’s lovely to make our residents’ wishes come true”, said Home Manager, Natalie White. “Sometimes it can be the little things that really make someone’s day, especially when it’s meaningful to them.” The ‘Make a wish’ initiative has seen residents across the Country Court Care group enjoying a wide range of ‘wishes’ from scoring goals at Sheffield United Football Club to off-road driving and theatre trips.

february Gardening Tips As I write this, we have yet to have the usual frosts and snow that winter brings, but we do have the promise of a cold snap and possibly some snow. With this in mind, February may prove to be a pretty cold month but, who knows? More than any other month you need to watch the local conditions and act accordingly. Don’t always do what the seed packet says - make a judgement depending on the ground conditions; you don’t want all your seeds to rot!

It is possible to sow crops such as broad beans along with early peas (under cloches), parsnips and garlic, but only do so if the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. A good idea for sowing peas is to use lengths of plastic guttering: half fill them with good quality seed compost and sow the seeds about 2inches apart, cover with compost, water and keep in a light spot under cover. Once the seedlings have grown to about 3 inches, make a shallow drill and slide the contents of the guttering into the drill. Make sure they are firmly bedded and water. Other crops that can be sown outdoors (watch the weather and make a judgement), are turnips, rhubarb crowns and grape vines. February is the best month to plant out garlic and shallots. Prepare the ground as you would a seed bed and plant using a trowel; don’t push the bulbs into the soil. The garlic cloves should be planted about 2ins/5cms deep and, with the shallot bulbs, leave the tips just at the soil surface. Check that the birds have not pulled the bulbs out and replant the disturbed bulbs as soon as possible. Make sure that you have got all of your seed potatoes by the end of the month and that they are spread out in a seed tray, or in egg boxes, in a light cool room where they can “chit” (sprout shoots), before being planted out. If the “chits” look pale and spindly, the room is probably too warm or too dark. The soil can be prepared for the spring planting by completing the winter digging, if not already done, removing any weeds that have survived the winter months. To warm up the soil for planting next month, cover it with fleece or polythene and, if you haven’t already, add well-rotted manure or compost to the prepared soil. Other jobs that can be carried out are:• Removing dead leaves from cabbages and sprouts –if they start to rot they can spread mould and mildew. • Make sure winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons, whose food supply is a little short at this time of year. • Spray fruit trees, whilst they are still dormant, with a plant-oil based winter wash to help prevent aphids and scale insects. • Feed and mulch fruit trees and bushes. Happy gardening!

S & J Windows and Conservatories

– Local Firm Providing a Quality Service Family-run company, S & J Windows and Conservatories, are one of the leading suppliers and installers of doors, conservatories and uPVC windows throughout the region, and are now entering their twenty-sixth year of continuous trading. Local man, Steve Kell, and the team are continuing to build on the fine reputation for delivering top quality products and installation services, at highly competitive prices. From uPVC double glazing and orangeries to soffits and fascias and double glazing repairs, S & J’s fully qualified workforce have the knowledge and expertise to successfully complete their installations quickly and efficiently. They are dedicated to providing all of their many customers with an expert and unrivalled service, making them a company that can be trusted. Their two teams of fitters operate across the area from Bourne, Stamford and The Deepings, down through Peterborough, Huntingdon and St Neots, so they can easily access any location within these local regions. It is often the case that one satisfied customer within the local area is so impressed with the S & J products and service, that a glowing recommendation leads to further projects much further afield. Hence the S & J teams of fitters have, in recent years, been busy in London, Oxford, Skegness and Lincoln. Having been established in the area for so long has meant that Steve can now look at their installations from more than twenty years ago, where the original wooden frames would have perhaps been replaced with aluminium ones.

Those same customers are now seeing S & J return with replacement uPVC frames, knowing that the same level of quality workmanship and competitive pricing will have remained a key feature. Besides the ‘windows, doors, fascias and soffits’ part of the operation, Steve explains how many houseowners are now moving away from the practice of having their conservatory built with a polycarbonate roof, the transparent covering which notoriously makes the room into an oven in the summer months and then into a fridge, when the temperatures drop. This, of course, has made many expensive additions to the house virtual ‘no go areas’, S & J have the solution with their tiled effect, “warm roof”, which has proved to be a very popular addition to their operation. Rather than simply cover an existing roof with the new composite tiles, S & J will remove the entire roof and replace it, ensuring that there will be no sagging in the future. Whatever the product, S & J pride themselves on their first class customer service and professional workmanship for total customer satisfaction. All of their products and installations are tailored to fit with the customer’s specific requirements - no matter what the query, they will find the ideal solution for you. The company now offers their customers finance arrangements. Acting as ‘introducers of finance’, S & J can ensure that the cost of the project can be spread over a period of time. See their website for further details.

A Call for New Volunteers for Citizens Advice in and Around Market Deeping

Tough Action Against Scammers

This spring, Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire, which runs the outreach in Market Deeping, is looking to increase the number of volunteers in the pool. They can be from any walk of life, and just have to be willing to commit to six hours each week. There are many, and varied, roles available, from the traditional client-facing assessors and advisors, (working face-toface, on e-mail and web chat and on the telephone), through to support in admin, reception, training, marketing, and research and campaigns. Introduction days, including interviews, will be held at the Stamford office.

By Eileen Le Voi - Safe Local Trades & Services

Volunteers don’t need to know it all! Training Officer, Megan Millar, has devised a detailed training programme for all new volunteers, whilst providing constant updates to the existing team on the frequent changes to the law and welfare benefits system. The organisation’s up-to-the-minute electronic information system contains most of the information needed when assisting clients, and volunteers are not left alone after they are trained; there is always an experienced volunteer to give support and guidance, along with the staffing team. Alan, a volunteer in Grantham, explains his experience: “It is January, two months to go before I retire after working for forty-six years. My wife presented me with a cutting from the local paper ‘New Call for Volunteers to Join Citizens Advice’. She thinks it would be good for me to do something worthwhile with my time (and get me out of the house!) OK, I read the article and I admit it does sound interesting. I contact the Training Officer and a week later I am being interviewed and invited to join the training programme.” Alan is still at Grantham, contributing to helping people solve their problems, several years later. Anyone reading this article who is interested in joining the organization should first contact Megan on trainingofficer@ citizensadvicesouthlincs.org.uk; or visit the website where they can fill in an application form; www. citizensadvicesouthlincs.org.uk/volunteer

A new crackdown on scammers has been launched across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough with the aim of making the county scam-free. The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP) includes Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Police and Crime Commissioner Jason Ablewhite, Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council. At the recent launch event, Police and Crime Commissioner, Jason Ablewhite, said: “Scams are becoming a part of our everyday lives but they shouldn’t be, as they are fraud and fraud is crime. Being a victim of this crime can have a devastating impact. These crimes often target those people in our communities that are vulnerable for a variety of reasons, including poverty, isolation, frailty, or disability, and this new partnership aims to look at how we can work together to make it harder for these criminals to continue to operate in our area.” Eileen Le Voi, Director of Safe Local Trades – which has been championing the consumer for over a decade – said: “As a member of the partnership, I am committed, on behalf of Safe Local Trades and Services, to this far-reaching charter. It is vital that we all work together towards one common, and very important, goal of raising awareness about scams and ending the financial and mental suffering caused to individuals on a daily basis.” Statistics show that • 53% of people aged 65+ have been targeted by scams and criminals (Action Fraud). • Scams cost the UK between £5-10 billion each year (Annual Fraud Indicator). • Anyone can be a scam victim, regardless of age, gender, education or economic background. • Scam victims might not always admit (or be aware) that they are a victim of a scam. Only 5% of victims report the crime (Age UK 2015). • Scams are the product of organised, predatory criminals who gain trust to exploit and steal money. For support and advice on scams (e.g. rogue traders, romance scams, scam mail, telephone calls, text messages, e-mails), call Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06. For a non-emergency response, (if you have been a victim of a fraud/scam), call Cambridgeshire Police on 101. If you have been affected by crime, get emotional and practical help from Cambridgeshire Victim and Witness Hub on 0800 781 6818. To report a fraud, or suspected fraud, and share information to help stop others from becoming victims, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. Tenant Fees Ban Comes into Force from June 1st 2019 by Jonathan Brewell, Managing Partner, Newton Fallowell

I

n January 2019 the government announced that the Tenant Fees Bill will come into force in England on June 1st 2019. Following its third reading in the House of Lords, the bill is likely to receive royal assent in the coming weeks. So what does this mean? Currently, most letting agents charge a fee for tenants to apply to rent a property. The fees cover a variety of items, such as credit checking the prospective tenant, drawing up a tenancy agreement and also creating an inventory for the property into which the tenant is moving, for all of which there is a cost involved for the letting agent. The new bill will prevent letting agents charging for these items, and agents and landlords will only be allowed to take payments for rent and deposits. The bill is yet to be finalised and there will be a few circumstances in which some payments can be taken.

to display our letting fees on our website, and we are also proud that our fees have always reflected the time and work required to carry out our job. But we are fully in support of the fee ban if it helps to improve our industry and prevent bad practice wherever that may be in the UK.

rental property, whilst also having to find a deposit for the new property they wish to rent. However, with a new wave of schemes in the rental sector, some properties are offered with a deposit replacement scheme, making it more costeffective to move rental properties than it has ever been.

The result! Tenants may be more mobile as the removal of fees will make it easier for them to apply for other rental properties. One of the biggest hurdles for tenants looking to move has always been having a deposit tied up on their current

Our services We offer an excellent service to both our landlords and tenants. If you are a landlord looking to let a property, or a tenant looking to move, we look forward to hearing from you.

Why? In certain areas of the U.K. unscrupulous agents have been known to charge substantial holding deposits for rental properties on a non-refundable basis. This means that, should the tenant not be successful in obtaining the property, they lose their money. At Newton Fallowell, Market Deeping, we are proud

History

Discovering . . . The Deeping lockup Rex Needle

L

ockups were small houses of correction for occasional inmates that began to appear throughout the country in the late 18th century, near to the church, on the village green or close to ale houses which were frequently the scene of disorderly conduct, especially on Saturday nights. They were purpose built single-cell prisons where drunks, vagrants and other petty offenders were locked up overnight before appearing before the magistrates to be dealt with at the next court hearing, sometimes known as guard houses or round houses. But whatever their shape, they were all “blind” houses because they had no windows, only grilles high in the walls or set in the doors for ventilation such as here at Deeping St James, hence the term blind drunk for anyone confined through over indulgence in alcohol.

manacles and chains to secure felons who were ordered to be incarcerated for wrongdoing. The responsibility for these tiny, temporary prisons was that of the parish constable whose duty it was to hold offenders overnight and until they were built, he was often obliged to take them into his own home for safe keeping, which often created a most awkward domestic situation. The Deeping lockup has become a major tourist attraction for South Lincolnshire and is now protected as a Grade I listed building as being of historic and architectural importance, having been refurbished in 1999 at a cost of almost £20,000 which came from South Kesteven District Council, local charities and various other grants.

This one is situated at the corner of Eastgate and Church Street and was originally the market cross, built of a local limestone in the 15th century when the village held regular markets, but in 1819, it was converted for use as the village lockup because there was sufficient space within the base for its new use.

The work was badly needed and included the removal of an unsightly electric lamp that defaced the top of the monument for many years but the stonework was also cleaned and re-pointed, cobbled setts laid around it with floodlighting to provide illumination at night together with a public seat and a line of black metal bollards to protect the structure from passing vehicles.

The work was carried out by a local craftsman, Tailby Johnson, at a cost of nine shillings (about £40 at today’s value), the interior being five feet square and containing three stone alcoves for seats that were fitted with

The money was therefore well spent to ensure the survival of this historic curiosity and also to attract more visitors to the village that already has a goodly share of heritage sites.

Your Finances

Pensions, Pensions, Pensions and the Tax Year End! - by Richard Ash & Matthew Biggs - Liberty Partnership Ltd

We recently had a new client come into our office as he had read somewhere about his Personal Tax Allowance being affected by his earnings. He was unclear whether he was impacted by this, but wanted to talk to a professional to make sure. In this instance, it turned out that, had he not come to speak to us, he would have been adversely affected and, as a result, his Personal Tax Allowance would have been impacted. What is the Personal Tax Allowance? The Personal Tax Allowance is the amount of money you can earn each year before you have to pay Income Tax. For the 2018/19 tax year, the allowance is set at £11,850 and this will rise to £12,000 in the 2019/20 tax year. How can your earnings impact on the Personal Tax Allowance? You are only entitled to the full Personal Tax Allowance if your income is below

Green Space Protected by Natural Barrier Landscaping work is under way at a popular open space in Market Deeping to protect the parkland for the future. A natural barrier – or bund – is being created along the edge of green areas owned by South Kesteven District Council, either side of the Towngate end of Tattershall Drive. The area has in the past been subject to illegal camping, and a wooden fence was sawn through last August for vehicles to gain access. Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Dr Peter Moseley, said: “This land is for the benefit of residents and should be kept that way. It’s a lovely park and we wanted to make sure we improved the area in a way that people wanted. We have been talking with local people ever since the residents’ group came to a full council meeting in June 2017 with a petition of more than four hundred names to protect the park. Residents and the town council worked together to clear debris and tipped waste left at the site. “But we needed a permanent solution. They didn’t want boulders, for instance, and this

Caroline Dugmore, from the residents’ group, with Cllr Dr Peter Moseley option of creating a landscaped trench provides a natural barrier. It has taken time but we wanted to get this right, both for the people who live here and visit, and for the variety of plant and animal life in this habitat, which is largely rural but at the edge of the urban area. To support that biodiversity, we are adding a wildflower seed mix to the bund in keeping with the countryside, which will undoubtedly enhance the area.” The two areas of land – one each side of Tattershall Drive – are widely used by locals for sports, dog walking and enjoying the outdoors. Despite SKDC installing a low, temporary wooden fence, there have been several incursions by

travellers over the years. The most recent was in August 2018 when a chainsaw was used to gain access. SKDC acted swiftly to move the travellers on, and worked towards a solution. The new landscaping will create a natural long-term barrier without reducing the appeal of the open space.

Volunteers Walk a Thousand Miles to Bring Christmas Cheer culminating in a fantastic sum of just over £10,000. On behalf of The Deepings Lions and Rotary Club of the Deepings, I would like to thank all the people in the Deepings and surrounding villages for their support.”

Rotarians and Lions strode out for nearly one thousand miles to bring Christmas cheer to people of all ages, in and around the Deepings area, raising a recordbreaking amount for local charities in the process. For seventeen evenings throughout December, members of the Deepings Lions Club and the Rotary Club of the Deepings, with good support from Deepings Interact, family and friends, took their Santa sleigh out in all weathers. They travelled through the streets and estates of Market Deeping and Deeping St James and the villages of Glinton, Northborough, Peakirk, Deeping Gate, Baston, Frognall, Langtoft, West Deeping and Tallington. The total mileage covered by the Santa sleigh route over the seventeen nights was estimated at eighty-five miles, and with an average of eleven to twelve

collectors and helpers out each night, in addition to Santa and his driver, the cumulative mileage walked by volunteers was close to one thousand miles, or around two million Fitbit steps! But the foot slogging marathon was well worth the effort, as the Santa sleigh raised just over £10,000, setting a new record for this popular annual fundraiser. Vince Sterland of the Deepings Lions said: “It was fantastic to see the extremely excited children and the smiles on people’s faces when we arrived. We had a brilliant collection this year with amazingly only two wet nights,

Rotarian Carl Midgley added: “Rotarians, Lions, their families and friends working together, spend a lot of time taking Santa on his rounds because we all think helping Santa is a wonderful thing to be part of. Witnessing the simple joy on the faces of young and old alike when they see Santa come down their street is brilliant. We are also lucky to see the generosity of so many people from all walks of life in giving what they can and we thank them very much for the support they give, as it enables us to do so much good. Long may we continue to be able to do this for our community.”

Chocolate Delight at Care Home’s Wonka Wonderland Chocolate (and all things chocolaty) was very much the theme when Maxey House Care Home in Deeping Gate held a ‘Wonka Day’, shortly before Christmas. The festive season was a little more magical for the residents when the home was transformed into Wonka’s Wonderland, and family and friends were invited along to share the day. The event was made even sweeter with the Rotary Club of the Deepings dipping in to buy two chocolate fountains for the home to use on the day, and for future fundraising events. Home Manager, Michelle Reid, said: “Staff dressed for the part to make it a day to remember for our residents and families. The residents were treated to an extra special 40

contribution of two chocolate fountains from the Rotary Club and their kindness made the event even more special. We raised £400 for Sparkle which will help make our residents’ dreams come true.” Maxey House specialises in dementia care and the Sparkle initiative was set up by the home’s owners to raise money to be used specifically to help residents enjoy special moments and magical days, to enable them to fulfil their dreams. Michelle added: “Sparkle is about creating memories and experiences for those who feel they have reached a time in their life where those dreams are not possible.” John Lavery of the Rotary Club said: “We think the Sparkle

One in Five UK “Baby Boomers” are Millionaires by Nick Ash, Managing Director

Latest O.N.S. (Office for National Statistics) figures show the extent of inter-generational wealth inequality. Netwealth, a wealth manager, analysed the O.N.S.’s Wealth and Assets Surveys between 2006 and 2016, (the most recent data available). The analysis also found one in five (20%) of over-65s in the UK to be a millionaire, compared with 7% in 2006. Often known as the wealthiest generation, “baby boomers” have consolidated their position through “soaring property prices, inheritance and the prevalence of final salary pension schemes”, according to Charlotte Ransom,

Chief Executive and founder of Netwealth. Younger households have seen their proportion of the UK’s household wealth fall over the same period. The wealth disparity has given rise to the “bank of mum and dad” — with one recent survey estimating that parents helping with property deposits are behind up to one in four transactions in the UK. So, how should “baby boomers” best plan to transfer their wealth? Any parent or grandparent preparing to help a child with a property deposit will have to consider whether the money is a gift or a loan and, if so, how and

when they expect it to be repaid. This also affects how any transfer will be treated for Inheritance Tax purposes (IHT). Other tax-efficient ways of transferring money to the next generation include setting up trusts, starting a pension for your children or grandchildren, or saving into taxfree savings accounts, such as the Junior ISA or Lifetime ISA. Younger generations need all the help they can get. So, if you are a “baby boomer” who wants to find out more about transferring your wealth to the next generations and have a chat about making your plan, give us a call on 01778 382723 and book your free consultation today.

School News Baston C. E. Primary School We had a fabulous Christmas at Baston where the younger children in Key Stage 2 performed ‘A Miracle in Town’ to their family and carers at school. Key Stage 2 performed a selection of Christmas carols and songs in church and narrated the Christmas nativity story, creating a tableau throughout the service. They completed the service with a Christingle song which is enjoyed by the children, adults and staff every year. Our PTA hosted a disco, a party, and arranged a visit from Santa during the last few days of school. Everyone enjoyed the activities and we are all extremely grateful for the wonderful opportunities that the PTA provide for us all-year-round. We celebrated success on the netball courts with our Red and Blue teams coming first and second in the cluster league. On Tuesday January 9th, twenty-four children travelled to Sheffield to take part in the annual ‘Young Voices’ concert. It was a very late night, but well worth it. Mrs Mills even managed to meet Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet! In the New Year, Deeping St James Community Primary School, Market Deeping Community Primary School and Baston CE Primary School are undertaking an exciting joint Reading Project where we are joining up with the local library to promote reading within our schools and in the local community.

WILLIAM HILDYARD PTFA The PTFA at William Hildyard Church of England Primary and Nursery School, Godsey Lane, Market Deeping, have just cut the ribbon on an amazing new piece of playground equipment. They have spent three years fundraising and recently a wooden pirate ship was installed on the field, surrounded by an all- weather surface. Their contribution was matched with funding that the school applied for. Not only have they raised money towards the Pirate Ship, but they have also contributed towards some target boards in the Key Stage 1 playground and a science board in the Key Stage 2 playground. The PTFA have worked very hard over the last three years and have raised money through holding Christmas and Summer Fayres (the Christmas Fayre raised a massive £2871.46 – not bad for a relatively small school!), discos, a Bingo and Bake-off Night, raffles, clothing collections and car boot sales. They would not have been able to do this without the support of the parents, staff and people of the Deepings: so, a great big thank you to all of those who have supported their fundraising events in any way.

Deeping St James Community Primary School As always, we’ve been very busy this term. In early January our choir went to Young Voices held in Sheffield Arena. We joined about 4,500 other primary-aged children in this mass choir event. It involved practising with a professional conductor all afternoon and then taking part in a concert from 7pm. As well as singing up to fourteen songs as a choir, the children were joined by professional dancers and singers to make up the concert – one of these performers included Tony Hadley, 48

lead singer of Spandau Ballet. The parents of the children also came up to support the children in the audience. Everybody had a great day! Events in the following weeks include a Greek Day; a mobile Planetarium; a trip up to York Railway Museum by train and various sporting events. Our joint reading project is also well underway with Market Deeping and Baston Schools, and we are linking with the library in Deeping to be part of a joint website which promotes reading and has a wealth of resources on it. As a school, if we can be of any assistance in the local community, please let me know. Ian Wilkinson Fe br u a r y 2 0 1 9

Pets and Vets

Thinking of Getting a Pet? Here’s Some Food for Thought

A

s spring and summer take hold, and as holidays are looming, many of us think about getting a new pet to join our households. Having a pet can be extremely rewarding and is known to have many health and social benefits. But, before rushing out to acquire your chosen animal, have you considered if you are the right owner for that pet? There are as many reasons for getting a pet as there are different homes for them, so it is important to make sure you are able to provide the home your pet deserves. Firstly, consider how much time you are able to dedicate to their care, as well as how regularly and for how long you are able to spare your time. Some animals, such as stick insects and spiders, only require short, infrequent periods of interaction, whilst others such as dogs would rather be with you for long periods of the day. It is lovely to get a new puppy during the holidays when you can settle them into the home, and it is much easier to toilet train when you are around most of the time. Going back to school and work can be very disruptive and many pups develop separation anxiety and possibly even destructive behaviours at this time. So, if you are out of your home for more than four hours a day, a different pet would be more suitable for your family.

Are you able to provide enough space and appropriate furniture for them, whether this is a cage or sharing your whole house? Many exotic pets have very precise housing requirements and their caging can be very expensive. Discussing their needs with those more expert at looking after these animals will be very informative. Look for your local herpetological or bird society for help. Not only must your pet’s environment provide it with food, water, warmth and bedding, it must also enable it to perform its normal behaviours or else its welfare and health will suffer. You will need to research their needs and check if you are able to provide for them. A small hutch housing a single rabbit does not lead to a happy, healthy life for that bunny! One significant consideration must also be the financial commitment you are undertaking when choosing a pet. As well as their regular ongoing requirements of food, housing, routine grooming, veterinary bills and pet sitting, infrequent or unexpected costs may occur, and you need to be in a position to deal with these too. Everyone here at Alders Vets will be happy to help you decide on a pet which is both desirable and appropriate for you, and can also discuss the ongoing needs of your pet to help you plan for the future.

Fabulous Future for Fearless Frankie Fordham Life can be a drag for some teenagers, but not for one Bourne youngster.Frankie Fordham is only thirteen, but already he can see his future in the exciting sport of drag racing. Four years ago, Frankietried a drag race experience as a birthday present from his grandparents and his mum and dad, Emma-Louise and Matt Fordham. After that, he was ‘bitten by the bug’ and the need for speed left him wanting more. He waited until he was ten years old to enter the UK junior championships; with no prior experience, he competed and finished an impressive twenty-third out of thirty-four. Hefinished his 2018 season in eleventh position in the U.K. championships. Frankie hopes that 2019 will see him progressing further with a newlydesigned drag car and new sponsors. Frankie would like to take this opportunity to thank his sponsors,at present Zero Limits and EDF Motorsports of Bourne, who have helped him on his journey so far. He is looking forward to working in partnership with other local companies, such as Discovering Magazines, but he would also welcome any new sponsors, whose businesses could be promoted by their being advertised on Frankie’s vehicle.

CLEANING SERVICES

As for the future, in two years’ time, Frankie will be upgrading to a bigger dragster and entering a class that will enable him to race at speeds of 160mph on a quarter-mile track in eight seconds! As a junior drag racer, Frankie has already reached speeds of over 80mph, hurtling from 0 to 60 mph in less than three seconds and pulling 1.3G at the start line. His vision is to race more and hopefully conquer America in the future. Frankie and his family would be delighted to hear of anyone wishing to help make ‘Fearless’ Frankie’s future dreams come true. To contact him or his parents, please e-mail frankiefordham@outlook.com www.frankiefordhammotorsports.com Facebook - Instagram - Twitter.
