Introduction
Welcome to Your April Issue. Easter- the only time of the year when it’s perfectly safe to put all your eggs in one basket! And talking of Easter eggs, this month why not take a stroll around the shops in the Deepings and try your hand in our Easter Hunt competition, where a fabulous sweet hamper could well be your reward? Here at “Discovering Magazines”, we are always on the lookout for new ideas for features and interesting stories and anecdotes from our many readers. The balance provided between pure advertising and general items of information and news stories, is one which we enjoy striving to maintain. Please get in touch if you know of a new area of interest which we could possibly explore. Enjoy the magazine, and best wishes for a happy Easter to you all.

I’m sure we’re all ready for a break from the occasional reference in the news to Brexit, so it was particularly exciting to hear that, as from April 1st 2019, the UK would just ditch Brexit and join Greenland, (to become the world’s leading producer of “green energy” from melting their enormous ice reserves). Great news for us gin and tonic drinkers too! This month we include our usual plethora of fake news, real news and a feature on specialist photographer, Rebecca Cole, (on page ?), whose work strives to make those special moments in our life even more special. Read about the personal trainers at Empire Gym, the Tallington Lodge Care Home, with its extension now complete, and Toft Country House Hotel with its new tea room. And finally … a friend of mine spent twenty years as a limo driver without a single customer - all that time and nothing to chauffeur it! He once woke up with a face full of rice - must have fallen asleep as soon as his head hit the pilau. Enjoy the read and the Easter break.

Rebecca Cole - Portrait and Newborn Specialist Photographer services: Family portraits; ‘bump shoots’; newborn; ‘cake smash sessions (a fun and messy way to celebrate your baby’s first birthday!); weddings; special events; commercial; pets; and boudoir. I also work freelance, doing graduation photography and several charitable events each year, raising money for charities like ‘Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation’ and ‘Teenage Cancer Trust’.”
Based in Whittlesey, Rebecca Cole explains here how she could be just the person you’ve been looking for to capture those so very special moments in our lives. “Since I was a young girl I have always enjoyed being creative, and photography was always a hobby. Every family occasion I had a camera in my hand. I have been building my business for the last five years. After a few years of buying props and equipment, we realised we needed to move house. We moved into our new home last summer, and the studio was finished in November 2018. It has been a dream come true, finally having a beautiful studio space to bring families for portraits.”
“I love to capture people’s special memories. People come to me as clients and leave as friends. My latest project is boudoir photography which is very exciting and already very popular! I just love my newborn photo shoots, so if you are expecting, then please get in touch!”

How Much Do You Make a Difference?
by Nicole Woodcock, Hummingbird Hypnotherapy
From week to week, I see many people of all ages, male and female, who come to me for help with a wide range of different issues. Anxiety, depression, confidence issues, exam stress, lack of direction, the list goes on. One thing that really stands out to me is that we never appear to focus on our own value - consistently being influenced by other people’s opinions, too scared to upset someone, struggling to make a simple decision, just in case it’s the wrong one. The primitive brain makes us lose our sense of identity, questions our belief system and makes us see the worse in every possible scenario. What we don’t realise is that, sometimes, the smallest thing makes the biggest difference, and that could just be that someone said, “Good morning” to you; the sun shone; you got outside in your lunch hour; or your kids gave you a hug. Those things shift perspective and give us a boost and yet we are so busy worrying, we can forget to see them. We can spend so much of our time moaning, finding a list of stuff that’s gone wrong and not seeing anything
outside, because we walked with our head down, staring at the pavement. Have you ever thought to just take five minutes to look up? Go outside, stop and appreciate the fact that, even when everything looks so bleak, the world keeps turning. Grab yourself a pen and paper today and write down three good things that you noticed today! Three positive things, yes it may be challenging, but focusing on the positive not only changes your brain’s state, it also gives it the opportunity to create a new positive
neural pathway. Doing this regularly will help you to start seeing the good stuff, no matter how small. Believe me, most mornings I’m just grateful I made the school run on time, or managed to sit in complete silence for five minutes in my crazy house. It all starts with the small things. Remember, there are, on average, 37.2 trillion cells in your body and they get up and take care of you every day! Hummingbird Hypnotherapy, assisting adults and children to find the positives in life, one step at a time.

Healthy Habits to Improve your Looks - Part 2 by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness
K
eeping motivation on a healthy eating routine or diet is not easy. Whilst you may have vowed that you were going to relinquish comfort foods and take up exercise more regularly, the reality of maintaining motivation in the longer term can be a challenge for the best of us. Last month and now this, Claire Saunders from Renu, shares her top Healthy Habits to keep you on track, and make 2019 the year to love the way you look!
Don’t allow yourself to be tempted It could well be that you still have sugary, fattening foods hanging around the house. If that is the case, YOU WILL eat them! Instead, give
them away to the local food bank, freeze them or, at the very least, put them in a box and seal it up, to be opened when you have reached your goal. The thirty minute rule! Time is precious. Plan your activity schedule and put it in your diary. Did you know that, if you exercise for thirty minutes, three times a week for four weeks in a row, you are 80% more likely to achieve your goals? It may be only thirty minutes, but if you do not put it in your diary, you will probably let other things get in the way. Put this at the top of your priority list, arranging other events around it, and you will see and feel the difference! You are far more likely to stick with your eating plan if you are keeping the thirty minute rule
Develop a good sleep routine Sleep is where the body resets and burns fat. Cut down your “screen time” in the evening and try relaxing in a hot bath instead. Give yourself the time to relax and recuperate from the pressures of the day and treat yourself to some essential bath oils, rather than fattening snacks. Reveal your inner radiance Life is so hectic these days and the stresses and strains of daily life can leave us putting our own needs last. This can lead to another year of disapproving looks at ourselves in the mirror. A well-nourished, rested body will make you exude radiance in your skin and body, and boost your energy levels.

Does your Back Pain Always Seem to Reoccur? asks Jake Somers BTEC Dip ST, Remedial and Sports Massage therapist
M
any of us will have the misfortune of suffering from lower back pain at some point in our lives. It is very common and can occur very suddenly or in a more subtle manner. It is, however, always inconvenient, badly timed and can never go fast enough. It is also something I see professionally most days in practice.
One thing that has become clear after assessing multiple patients with the same problem is that a large majority will have sustained a back injury at some point earlier in life. Many felt that they had recovered from the original injury, but there is often a little stiffness and restricted movement that remains, (often assumed as the new ‘normal’ or being age-related).A common cause of this is from the adhesions, or in other words internal scar tissue, which can be found at the site of the injury. These adhesions can ‘bind’ the various layers of muscle, fat and connective tissue which, in turn, limits their natural elasticity and smooth movements causing varying degrees of limited movement and, in many cases, pain. Research has shown that these adhesions are typically weaker, less elastic, prone to re-injury, and are more sensitive to pressure than healthy tissue. The result could be a reduced tolerance to some of life’s everyday activities and, in time, more persistent pain that lingers years after the initial injury.
The good news is that, in many cases, these adhesions can be broken down and healthy function restored to the injured area. Recovery time will vary of course, for example, depending on the amount of adhesions and how long ago the initial injury occurred. In fact, some professionals believe that adhesions are the root of the majority of physical imbalances. Working on the body to address adhesions early in their development can help minimise any of the preceding secondary problems. Sports massage can be an effective way to tackle this problem and restore healthy muscle function. If you would like to know more, or to see if I could help fix your recurring problem, then please contact the Wellhead Practice for more details. I practise here, three days a week, offering thirty or sixty minute consultations.

Personal Training - It Works! by Matt Weston
Personal trainers often suffer from a stigma that surrounds the profession – muscle-bound, know-it-alls, dressed to show off flexing muscles and make you feel as uncomfortable as possible. Charging you for an hour what you can pay half of, for a cheap gym membership for a month at a budget chain gym… A waste of money… Right? Wrong! Personal training in its best form, in my opinion, is one of the best possible ways of getting an immediate glimpse of your potential. It is a way to guarantee that you speak to someone who is passionate about fitness and its benefits and who has invested their time and money in making sure they have the experience, knowledge and insight to guide you in a direction that suits you, your life, your body and your personality. Above all things, a personal trainer should put you at ease. He or she should start the conversation by asking you why you want to exercise and whether there are any health considerations that need to be factored into the approach to ensure safety and responsibility on both sides. Then they should ask you, in your mind’s eye, what you imagine your PT session to look like. How do you picture it? Are you nervous? If you could choose a place to start, what would it be? What are you best at? What would you enjoy doing the most? And what do you fear the most? Personally, as a qualified Personal

Trainer, I love the initial ‘getting to know you’ stage. It is an opportunity to change someone’s opinion about personal training and exercise in general.
stage have found out what the person has an ‘irrational fear’ about, and it’s the time to squash that idea. It’s time to dispel the myth. Time to face the fear and realise… You can.
On many an occasion I will start a session with a new customer by doing the thing they think they are best at. It builds confidence and immediately immerses the person in the gym environment, allowing them to feel comfortable.
This might be one minute on the Stairmaster when the person has said, “I could never do that”, or doing ten press-ups to prove they can. It’s a powerful approach and promotes an aspirational approach to the rest of the session.
By this point I have explained to the person, that genuinely, the most important thing to do in the gym is to start with things you enjoy. It means you are more likely to come back, even if it means simply walking on a treadmill or doing a steady row for twenty minutes at a time. It is much more powerful for someone to want to come in to an environment and then ask questions when they feel compelled to learn, than to dictate to a person in the very beginning; to create a ‘pull’ from the customer, rather than you being the ‘push’.
Every personal trainer is different. That’s the beauty of it. Every personal trainer brings their unique approach and a different angle of expertise. But each and every ‘good’ personal trainer will put the human relationship first and will look to understand what motivates the individual. The ‘gym skills’ and scientific knowledge take a back seat, until trust is gained and the platform to work from is set.
Having said all this, it is very powerful to demonstrate early on that people are far more capable than they imagine. I will by this

It is also important to remember that while a personal training session lasts one hour, and you pay for the hour, the insight and knowledge gained in that time should be such that you can use the knowledge gained to train by yourself, confidently for a week,

Matt Weston a month or longer, depending on where you are in your fitness journey. Take a notebook. Listen, learn, absorb and then use what you have learned to influence and shape your own unique approach to your training. While repeat custom is essential for any personal trainer to be successful, it is also important that we all remember that the ultimate goal is for the person for a period of time to take the confidence that has been instilled and to go and ‘find out for themselves’ and to be given the freedom and joy of training independently. Until they come back and say, “OK, I’m now a confident gym goer, but I want to take it to the next level. I want you to help me push myself to my limits.” At this point, the role of a personal trainer changes from teacher/ confidence builder to coach/ motivator and, as such, a ‘team’ relationship becomes really powerful.

to apply key principles, and once they know their gym, they can use the internet to read, watch, research and thrive!
Even the best of the best will be pushed to do that extra rep, or extra ten seconds by a good personal trainer. To be immediately accountable to another person as well as yourself gives you that additional reason to push ‘one more time’! Even Arnold Schwarzenegger had a training partner!
Then there’s my brother Dave Weston.
So who are the PTs at Empire Gym? There are five in total, and we are all completely different. There’s me, Matt Weston. You’ve had an insight into my thoughts and approach. I’m very much a motivator. I’ll make you feel like you can move mountains. But I want to give you the confidence, tools, freedom and autonomy to go and find out for yourself. ADAM NORTHOVER
His natural motivational tendencies mean he’s a natural personal trainer who walks the walk. A three-time London Marathon runner, he’s clearly self motivated and specialises in, and has a passion for, HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training).
CHRIS SHINGLES Emily is a bodybuilder. The trophies she has earned are all on show in the gym. She’s had incredible success, but her biggest achievement is overcoming and managing anorexia nervosa for six years. She said her recovery started three years ago when she qualified as a personal trainer. Emily is open and honest about her personal journey. It is a powerful and inspirational story and now she stands and competes on stage. Imagine then her insight, empathy and understanding with clients looking to overcome challenges. She’s simply an inspiration. Full of manners, a joy to be around and the hardest working person on the gym floor, whenever you see her training. Adam Northover – ‘Body Transformation Specialist’
Adam is a gentleman and leads by example with his work ethic and physique. He also has a level-5 Advanced Sports and Exercise Nutrition qualification. A black belt at Tae Kwon Do, at fourteen years of age, Adam used to coach people, even at such a young age, and this is where his passion for coaching comes from. He won three medals in the discipline representing England in the Tae Kwon Do World Championships in 2000. Adam coaches and trains people of all levels and abilities, using both High Intensity Interval Training and Weight Training principles. He is also now coaching competitive bodybuilders, having competed and medalled himself in 2018. Chris Shingles – ‘ChrisFit’ A long-standing and trusted instructor of HIITSTEP and Metafit
Father of two, Chris found his passion and motivation for exercise when he was out of shape and, in his own words, ‘overweight,’ ten years ago. Chasing his son around the park, he made him a promise that he would run the London Marathon and get fit. And how he has kept that promise! A brilliant PT. So, five personal trainers all with their own approach. All five train out of Empire Gym. My brother and I are the resident trainers and Emily, Adam and Chris are what we term ‘external’ personal trainers who pay a rent to use the Empire Gym facilities to run their respective businesses. Typically, with all five of us, an hourly PT session costs approximately £30. To find out specifically how each of the external trainers approaches their pricing, pop along to Empire Gym to pick up one of their cards and give them a call or an e-mail. Empire Gym members can get six personal training sessions for £150 from Matt or Dave Weston. Individual sessions for members are £30 and for non-members £35.00.

Holidays in the U.K. – Luxury at Home!
Clare Lockett
Travel Counsellor
Luxury can be found in many resorts around the world, from Abu Dhabi to the Seychelles, from Venice to New South Wales. However, it’s a myth that you have to head overseas to experience a genuinely luxurious holiday because there’s a wealth of high-end experiences right here in the UK that can rival some of the very best on the planet. Spa Experience If anywhere could be considered the spa capital of Britain, it’s got to be Bath. The city is blessed with many high-end hotel spas like Woolley Grange, Lucknam Park and The Royal Crescent, which was named World’s Best Country House Hotel Spa at the 2018 World Spa Awards. This time though, we’re focussing on The Gainsborough Bath Spa – the AA’s Hotel of the Year for England in 2017/2018. This luxury hotel, in the heart of Bath, features customfurnished accommodation from the award-winning Champalimaud Design, with rooms and suites boasting five-star amenities like luxurious bedding, generous wardrobes, full blackout window coverings, a flat screen HD television, Bluetooth radio and radiant heated bathroom floors. Set beneath a glass atrium within the hotel is Spa Village Bath, which adopts a contemporary perspective on the city’s thermal water heritage. It blends the UK’s historic use of aromatherapy with a Malaysian influence to honour the region’s healing traditions. Guests at the Bath House are invited to visit a circuit of natural thermal pools, saunas, a steam room and an ice alcove, as well as indulge in aquatic body therapies and classic skin care treatments that focus on personalised aromatherapy.
well-maintained, private woodland grounds on a hilltop overlooking Lake Windermere. Guests at this contemporary country house hotel are well placed to explore the scenic surroundings with Keswick and Ambleside a short drive away. Within Linthwaite House’s beautiful grounds, there’s more than enough to keep guests busy. Dabble in a game of boules or giant outdoor chess, take a stroll along the many fauna and flora-blessed walking trails, or hop on a bicycle and explore the village of Bowness-on-Windermere. Train Journey on The Northern Belle Further evidence that a domestic luxury getaway needn’t occur in a single spot is Northern Belle. This unforgettable rail experience evokes the opulence of 1930s rail travel on a luxurious, intimate train that ventures through glorious countryside en-route to some of Britain’s top destinations. During one of Northern Belle’s specially curated journeys, you can expect exquisitely decorated carriages, lavish fivecourse dinners, effervescent afternoon teas, sumptuous cuisine and liveried stewards ensuring that each journey is as exciting as its destination. easter biscuits Banish Easter holiday boredom by getting the kids involved in some baking! These easy biscuits are fun to decorate and yummy to eat!
Ingredients
Method
250g royal icing sugar
• Place the butter in a large mixing bowl with the caster sugar. Use a wooden spoon to beat until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the egg until well mixed, then gradually add the flour. Use your hands to bring the mixture together to a stiff dough. Gather into a ball and chill for 30 minutes (the dough, not you!). • Heat the oven to gas 4, 180°C, fan 160°C. Roll out the dough on a work surface lightly dusted with flour until it's the thickness of a £1 coin. With an oval cutter (or a cardboard egg-shaped template), cut out egg-shaped biscuits, using the rolled out trimmings to make more. Place on baking trays and bake in the oven for six to 10 minutes, depending on size, until golden brown. • Allow the biscuits to cool for five minutes before removing from the baking tray to cool completely. • To decorate, make up the icing as directed on the packet. Divide between bowls adding a little food colouring to each bowl. Place the mixture into piping bags and get creative with your designs – the kids may like to use sweets or sprinkles too! These biscuits will keep for between one and two weeks when stored in a sealed cake tin.
Makes approx. 18 biscuits 200g butter (room temperature) 200g caster sugar 1 egg 400g plain flour Assorted food colourings

dulce cake. Vegetarians and vegans are well catered for too. Designed to make the most of the seasons, full of flavour, these specials change regularly.
The bar has a welcoming atmosphere and there are some unexpected beers on the pumps. Try well kept ales such as Adnams Ghost Ship, St Austell's Tribute and guest beers which change by the barrel. Here it's all about choosing something different to offer so there's Brewdog Punk IPA, Amstell, and even their own Bluebell lager on tap. But it's not all about the beer, here they have a huge choice of gins and malts, a small but good wine selection and a wide range of soft drinks.
Everything is made in house, from freshly baked bread to the delicious puddings. Helpston residents provide fruit and vegetables too which are used in the kitchen, as well as being sold, alongside local free range eggs, in the bar.
Quite aside from the pub's bar trade, its food is not just fantastic, but has two facets. There's a robust menu of well executed traditional pub classics - beer battered haddock and chips, Lincolnshire sausages and mash, liver and bacon - but also "Chef's Specials" using the best of fresh local ingredients. Typically you may find pork tenderloin with sautĂŠ potatoes and purple spouting broccoli, duck breast with port and lime sauce or cod baked with citrus and served with crab and

The Bluebell is open seven days a week, lunchtime has the option of filled ciabattas and lighter bites. Traditional Sunday lunch offers local roasts or afternoon tea with homemade scones and cakes. Diners can choose the cosy "Dog and Wellies" bar or the dining space which leads to the pretty courtyard for sunnier days. Private parties and meetings can be catered for too. The Bluebell is an "Inn" in the true sense of the word and accommodates guests in four delightful bed and breakfast rooms each with their own separate access from the pub. It's well worth a visit, and perhaps a relaxing treat away for the night.

Toft Country House Hotel and Golf Club – ‘Sleeping Giant’ Re-awakening? Six months on from having been introduced to Tom Munt, the new leaseholder at Toft Country House Hotel and Golf Course, and reporting on his ambitious aspirations to re-establish Toft as one of the leading venues in the area, it was a delight to be able to check on progress, and to meet Michael Norbury, recently appointed ‘Hotel and Events Sales Manager’. Being a local resident, Michael has been able to see for himself how there appears to be an increasing demand for hotels and the like to provide afternoon teas in our local area. The concept of travelling to a “destination tea room” for an afternoon meal seems to have become much more established recently. With this in mind then, the restaurant at the Toft Country House Hotel is in the process of being re-launched on April 2nd as exactly that, a welcoming, family friendly, destination tea room. Until recently, this large room has been used for residents’ breakfasts, evening meals and small functions which did not require the space offered by the adjoining George Suite, (a very popular venue for parties and wedding receptions.) Needless to add, here lies the issue – one large room boasting two huge windows, (one overlooking the beautifully maintained gardens, and the other on to the patio with its top-quality furniture), but with relatively few customers setting foot in it for most of the day. By transforming this space into a “destination tea room”, therefore, the aim will be to enable the public more than ever to appreciate that Toft House is not just “the golf course with the bar across the road”! The room, however, will still be available for evening meals, private hires and functions, as required.
Between Tuesdays and Sundays, from 7am and 6pm, the new tea room will offer a comprehensive range of speciality teas and coffees, alongside many food options, and not just “light-bites” and cakes. The Breakfast Award 2018-19 from “Visit England”, praising the quality of the Hotel’s breakfast offering provides the encouragement that what will be available from the tea-room will be of high quality, locally-sourced and produced in-house.This tea room innovation is amongst several other ideas which Michael was eager to explain to me. A repeat of 2018’s summer weather will see the patio and gardens, leading off from the tea room, become much more child-friendly, whilst the feasibility of a marquee for al fresco wedding celebrations is already under investigation. It could be said that Toft House Hotel and Golf Club, the ‘sleeping giant’, on Bourne’s doorstep, is starting to re-awaken!

Your Garden
APRIL Gardening Tips Although April is a lean month for fresh vegetables, it is a good month to get ahead by sowing seeds indoors or outside in cold frames and under cloches. If you covered your plot over the winter months, the soil may well be warm enough to plant and sow certain crops directly outdoors. The weather should be warming up now, but don’t get caught out by the night frosts; Easters in the past have often been colder than Christmas! A more useful job this month is to prepare seed beds, ready for sowing. If you forgot to manure in the autumn, you can still add really well-rotted manure or compost, but dig in thoroughly. Soil should be broken down into small, even particles; stones and woody material removed, raking the soil over until you get a fine “tilth”: don’t rake when the soil is too wet. If you are sowing, remember - if the soil is dry, water the base of the drill generously before sowing; if wet, sprinkle a thin layer of sand before sowing. You can sow several seeds indoors; chillies, peppers, celery, courgettes and summer squashes, runner and French beans, sprouting broccoli, Florence fennel, courgettes and summer squashes and sweetcorn are just a few. Other jobs: • Earth-up early potatoes. • Plant second early and main crop potatoes. • Last chance to plant onion sets, and sow aubergines and tomatoes indoors for transplanting out. • Most root crops can be sown now; it is probably your last chance to sow parsnips. • Sow sweetcorn - an interesting way of germinating sweetcorn is by pre-chitting: lay the seeds on a layer of damp kitchen paper then place a layer of paper over in an airtight box. Check daily and when a small white sprout appears, plant the seed about half to an inch deep in potting compost. • Plant asparagus crowns by the end of the month. • Sow the following outdoors but under cover; beetroot, cucumbers, lettuces, turnips, oriental leaves, leeks, cabbage and salad leaves. They can be sown in pots, modules or prepared seed beds from which you can transplant them. If you do grow any seedlings in trays or modules and they have grown a couple of “true leaves”, prick them out and move to individual pots or larger modules. You can also harden off young plants by putting them outdoors on sunny days, but bring them back in at night or put them in a cold frame or under cloches. • Don’t forget to regularly hand weed or hoe around seedlings as the weeds appear, as they create a lot of competition for food and moisture. • Make sure that fruit trees, canes and bushes are kept watered as any fruit planted in the last 18 months is susceptible to drought damage. Adding mulch around the base will help. • Sow maincrop peas and make the last sowing of summer broad beans. • Put up pea sticks and build cane supports ready for climbing beans while the ground is still soft. Happy Gardening!

Spring into Action - Get Your Property Sold With This Advice by Jonathan Brewell, Managing Partner, Newton Fallowell
S
pring is traditionally a time when the housing market comes back to life. Last month really followed this trend with a surge of new properties coming to market across the Deepings and surrounding villages. March to June statistically sees the highest volume of houses come to market, but as I have said in a previous article, the best time to sell is when you are ready! Spring is also when many buyers across the UK begin their hunt for a new home. So, with large numbers of properties coming onto the market, how can you make the most of the conditions? Here are some simple fixes to ensure your home has kerb
appeal and stands out against the competition.
knockers and letter boxes also creates a positive first impression.
Get gardening Gardens are important spaces for potential buyers, so make sure yours is looking its best. Spring is a great time to add some floral decoration by planting some bright daffodils or tulips. For houses with limited green space, window boxes and planters either side of the front door can give a touch of the outdoors. Showcase your home by trimming any hedges and tidying the boundaries.
General maintenance A well-kept exterior will make sure buyers are in a good mind-set from the start. Remove any built-up dirt or rot, clear dead leaves from paths and gutters and replace any loose slates on the roof.
Smarten up the front door furniture Ensure the hardware is neat and tidy and straighten numbers or house name plaques. Polishing
Perfect paintwork Give doors, window frames, garden gates and railings a fresh lick of paint. Bear in mind the colour of stone or brickwork when choosing a shade, so that the exterior is in keeping with the property’s character. Clean windows A very basic task, but dirty windows are far more noticeable when the sun is shining. Make sure all windows are cleaned, both inside and out. Don’t forget the interiors Once your home is looking great on the outside, make sure it’s not let down by the inside. De-clutter and open your windows regularly to ensure every room looks and smells as fresh as your spring garden. Will & Probate Services
It’s a Question of Trust by Nick Ash, Managing Director
Recent research suggests that, overwhelmingly, the older generation feel as though they are unable to trust their younger relatives with their financial decisions as they age. The report, conducted by Co-op Legal Services, has found that 79% of respondents over the age of fortyfive have not made a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) because they do not completely trust their younger relatives to make financial decisions on their behalf when, and if, they were to lose capacity, with 35% claiming they have no intention of creating an LPA at all. According to the report, 74% of those aged between sixty-five and seventy-four have failed to make a Lasting Power of Attorney, and this sentiment continues with those over seventy-five years of age, with a figure of 67% .
The prominent sentiment amongst respondents for failing to make a valid LPA concerned the donor lacking trust in their loved ones to make decisions in their best interests. 56% of people aged over fortyfive did not feel they could trust their loved ones to make financial decisions for them. 14% felt their loved ones are inadequately managing their own finances and would therefore struggle to look after the finances of another person. 11% fear that the deputy or attorney they appoint would borrow money without returning it, if an LPA was made. Overall, 29% would not trust a friend to represent them through an LPA, 18% would not trust their
child and 19% would not trust their siblings to take control of their finances, should they lose capacity. Whilst all of these fears are valid, and there have been terrible examples of people’s trust being abused, the truth is that Lasting Powers of Attorney are an essential part of later life and the vast majority of LPAs operate without any problems. The secret is in the way that you draw your LPAs up. You should never rely on just one attorney and you should keep everyone who has an interest in your welfare in the loop. If you want to discuss your Lasting Powers of Attorney with one of our specialist advisors, please call us today 01778 382723.

Your Finances
It’s Celebration Time! - by Richard Ash & Matthew Biggs - Liberty Partnership Ltd
In February, we were delighted to have been featured in The Times newspaper in their “Guide to the U.K.’s Top Rated Financial Advisers”. The guide featured the 200 top-rated advisers in the country. To place that in context … according to ‘Money Marketing’, (the weekly newspaper for professional financial intermediaries), during 2018 there were 25,611 advisers providing financial advice. To have featured in the top 200 is something of which we are very proud and is hopefully testament to the fact that the team here at Liberty Partnership has high standards and that we are wellregarded by all of our clients. So, if you have any financial requirements, from mortgages to retirement, investment and estate planning, then please feel free to contact us to arrange a free initial discussion. You will be assured of a friendly and professional approach.

Stunning Images at Deepings Annual Exhibition The Mayor of Market Deeping, Councillor David Shelton, opened the Deepings Camera Club’s 16th Annual Exhibition in mid-February. There were 177 prints on display at the Deepings Community Centre in Douglas Road, Market Deeping. There was, as always, a very wide range of subjects on show, so there was something for everyone to enjoy. As well as stunning landscapes there were pictures of wildlife, sports photography, portraits, creative work and much more. There is, each year, a special award given for the Mayor’s favourite image. Having given very careful consideration to all of the prints on display, “A Pair of Peacock Tree Frogs ” by Peter Gray was the print that was given this accolade. The second place went to Peter Allen’s photograph of “Corfe Castle”, while third was “Battle of Britain Memorial Flight” by Peter Lawrence. Hundreds of visitors flocked to enjoy this popular event, and they too were given the opportunity to vote for their favourite images. First place went to “Brief Encounter” by Graham Clegg, with Peter Gray’s tree frogs in second
place, while an image of baby wrens by Brian Redshaw took third spot. For the first time, an experienced judge from the camera club circuit was invited to the exhibition and asked to choose the best photograph in each of seven categories. He selected “Duel in the Sun” by Paschal Jeveons as his overall favourite image. Dave Stewart, the Club’s Chairman, was delighted that so many people had come to
see the excellent work on display which showcased the interests, skills and talent of the Club’s members. He added that he was also extremely grateful to everyone who had given time to prepare the exhibition and to welcome visitors over the weekend. Deepings Camera Club meets each week on Wednesday at 7.30pm at the Deepings Community Centre. There is a wide range of speakers and activities covering all aspects of photography throughout the year. For more information about the Club, visit the website www. deepingscameraclub.org or come along to one of their meetings where you’ll receive a warm welcome. (Words by Ken Bunch, Exhibition Organiser).

Advice
Consumer Advice
Universal Credit – Still Work to be Done Some research carried out nationally by Citizens Advice shows that improvements have been made in the administration of Universal Credit, but more changes are still needed.
By Eileen Le Voi - Safe Local Trades & Services
Over the past two years, various changes were made to the way Universal Credit payments were made, such as cutting the waiting time by a week, and providing bigger advance payments, which have benefitted clients. However, Citizens Advice research shows that half of the people they helped still had to borrow from friends and family, or fell behind on bills. Universal Credit is paid monthly, but many who work or claimed the old legacy benefits were used to getting paid more often, and the change creates budgeting challenges.Too few people have access to the different ways of being paid, like getting payments twice a month. Only 14% of the people helped nationally over the last year knew that more frequent payments were possible, although 80% of those who weren’t told about it would have taken the option if they had known. Of the thousands of people who visit Citizens Advice nationally, it was found that people claiming Universal Credit have just £2 left over each month after paying for essentials, (rent and food), compared to £12 for people who claim the “legacy benefits” that it replaces. People often claim Universal Credit because something disruptive is happening in their life, like losing a job or ending a relationship. This can create huge financial pressures, and Citizens Advice knows that many people don’t have savings, so quick access to financial support is needed. People who have been helped often struggle financially, well beyond the first few weeks of being on Universal Credit.

Time to Hang up on the Telephone Tricksters – Don’t be Fooled this April !
Deepings
Safe Local Trades is delighted to be supporting the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough against Scams Partnership (CAPASP), which looks at beating the bogus calls and rogue traders in YOUR area. Telephone Scams – potentially a lot more damaging and sophisticated than your average nuisance call about PPI, direct sales call or automated offer. Here is a guide to the types of scam calls, and some tell-tale signs which can help us hang up on the fraudsters. • Vishing - A telephone call is used in an attempt to steal personal information. • SMShing - An SMS text message is used in an attempt to steal personal information. • Investment or ‘Boiler Room’ Scam - A telephone call offers worthless, overpriced or non-existent shares. • Pension Scam - Designed to lure people to cash in their pension with promises of upfront cash, guaranteed returns and one-off deals. From January 2019, it has been illegal for genuine pension companies to cold-call. • Computer Scam - A scammer calls you and asks for you by name. They’ll say they are a computer-security expert from Microsoft, or another legitimate tech company. They’ll say that your PC, laptop or tablet has been infected with malware (or a computer virus), and that they can help you solve the problem. The scammer will attempt to confuse you with jargon or ask you to open common Microsoft utilities and services that list what may appear to be problems with your computer. Stay safe: NEVER give out any bank / financial / personal information over the phone. A scammer will try and persuade you on the phone to hand over your bank card to a courier or taxi driver and they often say they’re from your bank or the police. They may ask you to give them your card and PIN, set up a ‘safe’ account, or buy expensive goods like watches or mobile devices and hand these over to them. ALWAYS be wary of any unsolicited phone calls, especially when they ask for your personal or financial details, hang up and report ANYTHING suspicious. Your bank or the police will NEVER: • Ask you to transfer money to a new account for fraud reasons, even if they say it is in your name. • Phone you to ask for your 4-digit card PIN or your online banking password, even by tapping them into the telephone keypad. • Ask you to withdraw money to hand over to them for safe- keeping. • Send someone to your home to collect your cash, PIN, payment card or cheque book if you are a victim of fraud. • Ask you to purchase goods using your card and then hand them over for safe-keeping. If you think you or a loved one may have been the victim of a scam, report it. To find out how you can sign up for the fight against fraud, and read some tips on spotting a scam, visit www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk

Discovering . . . The town bridge
Rex Needle
T
here has been a bridge over the River Welland connecting Market Deeping with the south for over 450 years but the one we see today has become a landmark in South Lincolnshire. The first town bridge was originally made of wood and most probably constructed in the 16th century because it is mentioned in a survey of 1563 as either the Wheat Bridge or the Blind Bridge and there is a further mention in parish documents when repair work was carried out in the years 1585-87. This was replaced by the present bridge in the mid19th century, sturdily built of stone and with three arches spanning the waterway, a solid structure that was designed to last. Since then, it has provided a major service to the town during a period of changing traffic from horse drawn carts and carriages to the motor cars and heavy vehicles we see today yet it survives as a monument to the reliability of Victorian civil engineering. The bridge carries the main road from the south into Market Deeping, better known today as the A15, and was opened with due ceremony in July 1842 when the first vehicle to cross was the Royal Mail stagecoach making its regular run between Peterborough and Lincoln but stopping here to give passengers and horses rest and refreshment at one of the local hostelries.
54
D I S C O V E R I N G

Deepings
The total cost of the project was £8,000 [almost £1 million at today’s values] although this also included the purchase of several houses in the market place that were demolished in order to widen the approaches to the bridge and some of the bricks were salvaged for use in the construction and are still visible today. The bridge has continued in use ever since although the introduction of motorised transport had a dramatic effect on traffic flows that have steadily increased as the years progressed with the result that there has been an additional strain on the stone structure. Eventually, the number of cars, coaches and lorries travelling through Market Deeping became so great and the subsequent road conditions so dangerous for pedestrians that Lincolnshire County Council had no alternative but to relieve the pressure by building a new 1½-mile bypass at a cost of £8 million which opened in July 1998. The bypass has brought much needed relief to the streams of through traffic which passed through Market Deeping to enable life in the town proceed at a more leisurely pace while the future of the bridge appears to be assured for at least another century. Archive photograph of the bridge taken by Rex Needle in 2009. A P r il 2 0 1 9

Tallington Lodge Care Home Showcase Redevelopment At Open Day Tallington Lodge Care Home enjoyed a very successful Open Day on Sunday March 10th. The day was designed to showcase the exciting second phase of a two year redevelopment of the care home. Visitors were impressed by the high standards of décor, and had the opportunity to take a tour of the home, meet the care team and sample the mouth-watering menus. The new areas of Tallington Lodge feature the ‘Railway Inn’ pub, Gallery café and luxurious lounge and dining areas. The project has seen an additional thirty-one bedrooms, as well as increased car parking space and a staff training room. The scheme has involved the partial demolition of the old care home to make way for a new, sympathetically designed, two-storey front extension in keeping with the original Regency period rectory. “We were pleased to welcome over one hundred people to our home at the weekend,” said Rabea Azad, Customer Relations Manager at Tallington Lodge Care Home, adding, “It was great to show people what a fantastic asset the new home will be for the village of Tallington. We already have great relationships with various local groups, schools and churches; the new home will give us much more space and a fantastic venue to invite more
community groups to join our residents for events.” Tallington Lodge is built from traditional stone, whilst incorporating state-of-theart design and functionality, enabling staff to deliver the highest standards of personalised care. The care home’s interior décor draws on the local area for inspiration; The Welland Suite and Burghley Suites on the ground floor, are named after the local River Welland and famous Burghley House in Stamford. They feature tastefully designed sitting and dining areas for residents to enjoy. The superior ground floor en-suite bedrooms feature patio style doors, opening directly out onto their own seating area, enabling residents to enjoy the garden. Residents will also be able to make use of the ‘boat house’, a beautiful outdoor sitting area decorated with a nautical theme. About Country Court Care: Founded in 1983, the Country Court Care Group is a family-owned and run business, with the company philosophy, “Our family caring for yours”. Country Court Care provides elderly care services within residential and nursing homes, together with associated day services. The business is renowned for being a “best-in-class care provider”, with an outstanding reputation.

School News NEW CHAPTER FOR BASTON PRIMARY SCHOOL Work is underway on transforming a double-decker bus into a new library for Baston Church of England Primary School. Headteacher Rebecca Mills was challenged by the school’s cramped existing library with its limited bookshelves and inadequate lighting. With no alternative indoor space available, she came up with the idea of siting a Library Bus in the school grounds and asked the PTA committee to drive the project forward. Emma Bush, PTA Chair, explains: “We want to help our children experience the joy of reading a wide, exciting world of texts in a place that inspires and motivates them. The woodland-themed bus will be the perfect place and will also be used for quiet time, one-to-one and sensory learning and after-school clubs. Thanks to parents, the
local community, external applications and PTA fundraising we have raised £23,000 of our £28,500 target in just four months - amazing for a small village school.” Parents, villagers, companies and contractors have volunteered their time and expertise and the bus, donated by Stagecoach East Midlands, is now stripped, cleaned and painted ready for fitting out. Mrs Mills says: “We are fortunate to have a very active PTA and the Library Bus is undoubtedly its most ambitious and exciting initiative. We are really excited to be creating a real community project that celebrates reading.” Shoppers can support the Library Bus through the Tesco Bags of Help initiative at Market Deeping, Stamford and Peterborough’s Dogsthorpe, Chadburn and Werrington stores, throughout March and April.
William Hildyard C of E Nursery and Primary School William Hildyard Primary School had a fantastic day on Thursday March 7th which was World Book Day. Children and teachers came to school dressed as a character from their favourite book. As a whole school, every child shared which character they were and the book it was from. Across the school, children completed a variety of different work all around books, such as imaginative approaches to creating book reviews, and lots of children were able to complete work for their class blogs. The English subject leader said, “The day was a huge success. Children loved all that they did and we were able to promote reading across the school. Reading is such an important skill for children to master and we try to support our children and parents in a whole variety of different ways.”
Over the past couple of weeks, the children have been displaying their ability and fitness as they have competed in a variety of cross country running races. A team of thirty children from Year 3 to 6 competed in a local cross country running event that William Hildyard organised for all schools from around the local area. Around 130 children raced hard around the Glebe Park, supported by many friends and family. It was a great success. William Hildyard had a few notable achievements – two silver medal winners and overall Years 5/6 boys team winners. On Saturday March 9th, a team of twenty children from William Hildyard took part in the Primary Schools Cross Country event at Welland Academy in Stamford. Children enthusiastically raced against many other children from primary schools across the area. They performed incredibly well with a number achieving top 10 finishes. Mr Fell, the cross country coach, said, “I’m incredibly passionate about running and it’s great to see the children enjoying it as well. Health and fitness is essential for our children and the benefits to their bodies as well as their minds is considerable. I’m really proud of all their efforts.’

School News Students to Benefit from New Magazines at the School Library A visit to the school library has become far more interesting for one group of students, with the introduction of some inspiring new reading material. After learning of recent research that shows boys are often reluctant readers, South Kesteven District Councillor, Ashley Baxter, allocated £250 of his Ward Member Grant budget to help improve literacy among children in The Deepings. The Deepings School will not only get a subscription to six fascinating magazines for a whole year – but the school library will also receive a box of comics each month.
The Deepings School librarian Kathryn Wallis with Cllr Ashley Baxter and some of the Year 7 English class.
Cllr Baxter, who represents the Market and West Deeping Ward, said: “If we encourage our children to improve their reading, everyone benefits. Obviously reading skills are necessary for passing exams and finding a job but, more importantly, reading broadens the mind and enables us to better understand culture, ideas and people.”
in as books, as well as covering a variety of thoughtprovoking topics. The school expects the magazine project will promote reading among all pupils.
Experts agree that boys of every age typically read less thoroughly than girls, whatever it is they are reading, taking less time to process the words, and skipping chunks of text. Research shows that boys are less likely to open up a book and read it. Magazines are less intimidating and often have as many words
School librarian Kathryn Wallis said: “This grant has enabled us to subscribe to a schools magazine package for a year, which gives us six publications and a free box of comics every month. They include 4-4-2, National Geographic and BBC Space magazines, and there are plenty of others available if we wish to make a change.
Become a Trustee other two terms. In addition, trustees are given the opportunity to get to know schools in the trust and their local governing committees. Trustee meetings are held at Arthur Mellows Village College in Glinton, usually from 8.15 a.m. to 10.00 a.m. All of the current trustees are long-serving, former or serving governors of member schools.
As many readers will be aware, Arthur Mellows Village College, Glinton, in conjunction with Fulbridge Primary Academy, (both schools rated ‘Outstanding’ by OFSTED), have founded a new multi-academy trust to serve education in Peterborough. The 4Cs Multi-Academy Trust* currently has four schools in membership; has been appointed to build a new primary school at Manor Drive, Paston; and expects a second secondary school to join in September this year. The ambition is to build a trust of up to ten local schools.
If you have an interest in helping drive education standards in Peterborough to a higher level, the 4Cs Multi-Academy Trust has a vacancy right now.
The trust comprises five members who appoint nine trustees who determine the policies of the trust, set targets, monitor performance and manage finance and property. Trustees act in a non-executive position, and day-to-day management is the responsibility of the Chief Executive Officer and his team.
If you are interested, please e-mail Gilmour McLaren, (Chair of 4Cs Multi-Academy Trust), care of the Clerk to the Trustees, (dsanderson@arthurmellows. org) and he will arrange a meeting to expand more fully on the information above. Alternatively, visit www.four-Cs.co.uk. A successful candidate is likely to have supervisory or management experience at work or experience as a school governor or management of a charity.
Trustees commit to attend four meetings in the autumn term and two meetings in each of the

Pets and Vets
Easter Bunnies Easter has become a time when parents often buy rabbits for their children as pets. However, rabbits are not easy pets and, for young children, may be completely unsuitable. Many buy dwarf rabbits in the belief they are easier to handle, but these are often much faster and bouncier than expected. Larger rabbits such as Lionheads and Lop-eared rabbits are usually more docile, though heavier to handle. Giant rabbits are a recent phenomenon and really are for specialised owners as they have greater housing and health needs. Rabbits need a large shed with a run attached. A small hutch with a miserable bed section and open fronted area is far too small. Even those with two tiers do not cater for a rabbit’s needs although it does allow them to have a separate toilet area – rabbits are hygienic animals. Rabbits need plenty of space to run around, stretch, jump and behave as rabbits do. In open runs, place tubes and boxes for them to jump over and hide in. Rabbits also need company and you should never buy just one; pairs of rabbits are best. Just do make sure you know which sexes you are buying, as many owners have come a cropper when they’ve bought two rabbits
By Deirdre Slater
and one morning there are suddenly six in the cage! Sexing young rabbits can be very difficult though, so if you are unsure of what you have, bring them to the surgery for a second set of eyes. If you are keeping one of each sex, then at least have the male neutered, for obvious reasons! Rabbit obesity is becoming a real problem in this country as many assume the normal shape of rabbit is like Peter Rabbit. Rabbits should be lean to be healthy, so NO MORE than an egg cupful of pelleted food a day. Think of this as a treat rather than the main food. Unlimited, good quality hay not only keeps a rabbit’s guts healthy, it is important in maintaining good dentition. Rabbits’ teeth grow all the time and they are designed to constantly grind down hay and grass to stay the proper shape and angle. Never give grass clippings though, as they ferment in the guts. Vegetables and herbs such as broccoli, spring greens, dandelions and parsley are delicious for rabbits. And of course, fresh clean water every day. Remember to vaccinate your rabbit against myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease to protect them in the coming months.

Four Club Records Fall as Deepings Collect Twenty Medals at County Championships At the penultimate weekend of the 2019 Lincolnshire County Championships, Deepings Swimming Club brought home twenty medals, smashed four club records and reached forty-seven finals, as the team continued to post some outstanding performances at the county showpiece. Medals were won in every stroke by both girls and boys, a clear display of the club’s current strength in depth and versatility. Alex Sadler set two club records in the 12 years age group and reached the podium in all four of his races. In the 50m butterfly, he lowered his own club record, taking silver in the process. He repeated the feat in the 100m backstroke and then won a third silver in the 200m butterfly. He completed a fine day of competition with bronze in the

regional qualifying times.
Deepings’ only gold medallist of the weekend was Louis Metselaar, who smashed his own club record in the 50m breaststroke heats in the 17 years age group, a time that puts him sixth in the British age group rankings. Although he was slightly slower in the final, Louis touched home more than half a second ahead of his nearest county rival. He followed that performance with silver in the 50m butterfly, agonisingly missing out on gold by just six-hundredths of a second.
Bethany Eagle-Brown knocked almost one second off her own 100m freestyle club record, taking bronze in that event, and went one better in the 50m butterfly by winning silver. Deepings won a second medal in the 50m butterfly, with Jessica O’Herlihy taking bronze in the 13 years age group. Completing the medallists were Emma Dennis with silver in the 10/11 years 50m breaststroke and bronze in the 100m freestyle, and Holly Leggott with bronze in the 16/O 100m backstroke.
Harry Cardell swam to silver in the 200m butterfly in the 15 years age group, whilst Zack Treharne, Ed Trofimovas and Joe Lund all secured bronze medals.
Lynn Chapman, Deepings Swimming Club Head Coach, said: “ Girls, boys, junior members and senior members all produced strong swims and they have been deservedly rewarded with medals, Midlands times and personal bests.”
The girls’ squad put in a typically gutsy display, making multiple finals and achieving a number of

Theatre Review “The Fenland Screamers and Other Boggy Tales” (An alternative to the traditional pantomime, performed by The Eastern Angles Theatre Company at Peterborough’s Key Theatre : January 22nd – 26th). The following comments come from our roving theatre critic, Paula Peake, who had the good fortune to have experienced the very talented Eastern Angles touring company at their best in this fabulous farce. “One word … splendiferous! What a truly entertaining evening we had last night. I haven’t laughed so much in a long time, and my partner wasn’t expecting his face to ache so much with laughter. We witnessed seamless transitions, excellent comic timing, talented musicians, splendid vocal ranges and more accents than you could shake your bell stick at, let alone some of the best acting and facial expressions I have ever seen. Then, to include the unsuspecting audience was the icing on the cake.
U3A Member, Malcolm Hoadley, Scoops Chip Shop Bowls Trophy
Last year, Deepings U3A added Lawn Bowls to their list of summer activities, by teaming up with the Market Deeping Bowls Club in Douglas Road. Their members competed for the Boundary River Restaurant Trophy over the course of the season. The winner was Malcolm Hoadley (on the right in the photograph), seen receiving the trophy from The Boundary Fish and Chips Takeaway and River Restaurant Managing Director, Bill Shaw. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the U3A should contact Susanne Hoadley on 01778 343515. Pets Pantry – Quality Pet Food … naturally! Centrally located in Market Deeping, Pets Pantry is a long-established pet shop in Market Gate, which Jayne Tattersall has run with her husband Roger for over six years, enabled by the help and support given by Sue and Jane. Jayne has always been interested in animals, dogs predominantly, and six years ago, the Tattersalls were looking for a pet business to buy. Pets Pantry had already been established for twenty years, had been well-run with a good customer base. Since then, it has been a case of keeping up the good work.
That ‘good work’ has involved the promotion of natural feeding for animals, and Pets Pantry are proud to stock market leaders in the field of dog food, namely “Symply”, “Canagan” and “Green Pantry”. Jayne explains, “People are more aware of the food they eat themselves and of what they are giving their pets. If they have a healthy diet for themselves, they want to give it to their animals too. People like natural, and that’s what we give them. I do not want to sell products that I would not feed my own animals.”
“We are also stockists of Natures Menu frozen raw food and treats, a very healthy, natural and economical way of feeding. If people would like to find out why they should be concentrating on giving their dogs and cats a premium quality diet, they can come along on Saturday March 30th, when Andy from Symply/Canagan will be in store to answer any questions that people would like to put to him regarding nutrition. There will also be special offers on this day.”
