Introduction
Welcome to Your August Issue. For many people, August means only one thing – another school year is over, and the children (and teachers!) are enjoying their well-earned, six-week break. To all the parents reading, I’ll let you decide whether or not that’s a good thing! One way to help fill those long days in the weeks ahead will be to enter our ever-popular seaside treasure hunt in this month’s issue, for which the prize is an impressive £50. What’s more, this month we’ve compiled our annual “Schools Out” guide, whilst the “What’s on” and entertainment guide are full of great ideas too, so hopefully you won’t be hearing “I’m bored” and “There’s nothing to do” too many times this month!

Welcome to the summer, with a glut of top class sporting events, nationally and also nearer to home, with Bourne’s very own Cicle Festival this month. I couldn’t help noticing that, following England Women’s fabulous performance in the recent football World Cup semi-final, their manager, Phil Neville rued the fact that his team had been unfortunate in being “reduced to ten men” with the red card issued to Millie Bright. I was almost willing him to add that the remaining players just had to “man up” in her absence. Funny old game, women’s football! And finally … Who was the Frenchman who invented sandals? Phillipe Phillope. I’ve just heard that vandals have stolen the “F” from the Funfair sign in our town. Now that is just unfair. Enjoy the read and have an awesome August!

Back to School Already? Time for New Shoes! Well, it’s that time of year again to start thinking about shoes to go back to school! At Zebedee Shoes, we spend months prior to this choosing the right quality and style of shoes that fit well, are comfortable and durable enough to handle the day-today wear-and-tear, as our children put them through their paces. Remember also that your child’s feet are in their school shoes five days a week, so the more natural materials that are used the better, as feet can breathe and stay healthy. It can also be very helpful when you come for a fitting to either bring your old school shoes or know what size you have been wearing, because when we size you up we can then tell how much growth has been going on, and we can fit appropriately for the next school year. We cater for children from Reception right up to adult size 12, providing a range of stock, from trendy through to traditional and more formal styles for the older senior school students. We also stock shoes to fit orthotics. All of our staff are trained to a very high standard of fitting, so if a fit isn’t right, we won’t let it go out of the shop. We strive to get the best fit for your child and if we don’t have the right shoes in stock, we can normally order them for you within a few days. Our customer service is something we pride ourselves on and hope that everyone who visits our shop has a pleasant experience.

Maxey Classic Car and Bike Sh One of the most popular local shows, the longestablished Maxey Classic Car and Bike Show, is being held on Saturday August 10th at the picturesque lakeside venue in Quarry Lane, Maxey, one mile off the A15, south of Market Deeping. Now in its 18th year, the Maxey event promises to attract a large entry of two and fourwheel vehicles, and provide a great day out for all the family. There will be live music from Paul Lake and the Herbie Lamb Jazz Quartet, a real ale bar, barbecue and children’s amusements. Admission is just £5, with free entry for exhibitors and under 14s. The show opens to the public at 11am, with judging taking place between 1pm and 3.30pm. Once again, the difficult job of judging the winners is being handled by national motoring journalists. Organised by the Maxey Charity Club, all the Show’s profits (which last year were £3,000) will be donated to local, good causes. The event has become increasingly well-known over the years and continues to attract over 350 vehicles which include a wide range of classics; exotics like
modern Ferraris; kit cars and 4x4s; and the classic motorcycle class which gets more popular each year. Their motto is “If you drive it or ride it and you love it, come along and show it”. There is no need to book your vehicle in, just turn up on the day. They’d love to see you there! Rotarians Bring More Light to Lives of Nepalese Children Nepal may be 4,500 miles away, but Rotarians in the Deepings have shown that distance is no barrier when it comes to providing vital help and support for remote communities. In such a mountainous and unforgiving landscape, communities are inevitably more isolated than most and do not benefit from many of the trappings of modern life that we all take for granted. But now, life for the children at two schools in Nepal has been completely transformed, thanks to the Rotary Club of the Deepings, with the club providing funds to help pay for solar power equipment to be installed. The club has been working on the project in association with the charity “The Nepal Remote Villages Trust (NRVT)” and, as a result of that joint initiative, some five hundred children at the Janakalyan Primary School and Shree Simle High School in the Jaleshwari region of Khotang are to benefit in so many ways. The arrival of solar power opens up new and exciting opportunities for the Nepalese students in those communities, enabling them to access e-books and modern educational material. It will help to improve literacy levels at the schools, which in turn can lead to better job opportunities for the students on leaving school, and provide access to more information to help with improvements in other areas, such as healthcare.

Solar panels being installed thanks to money provided by the Rotary Club of the Deepings. And it won’t just be the younger members of the community who will benefit. The schools will be running adult education classes too, which means that the lives of the whole community will be greatly enriched. Last year, Deepings Rotary supported another community in Nepal, providing funding for NRVT to install solar power at Rhupangmare School in Lower Solukhumbu. Rotary contributed £1,000 to the total cost of £2,000 for that project, with £500 from club funds and a £500 grant from the Rotary Foundation. Following the success of that inaugural project, the club decided to be even more ambitious this time. Securing a grant of £1,500 from Rotary Foundation (Rotary’s own charity), without which the project would not have been possible,

On the way up the mountain to the remote Jaleshwari region of Khotang. the club contributed a further £1,700, making a total Rotary contribution of £3,200 towards the project cost of £3,350. Rotarian Carl Midgley said, “It has been a privilege for our club to be able to fund this project and to know that we have been able to help two communities. The work of the Nepal Remote Villages Trust is quite inspirational and life-changing, and we are only too pleased to be able to support them in this way. Through Rotary, we do a lot of work for our own community in the Deepings, but we also feel it is important to extend that help to other communities in the world where there is a need when we can. That is what makes Rotary the organisation that it is.” august 2019
Medals Galore for Deepings at Netherlands Invitational Meet Deepings Swimming Club travelled to Eindhoven for the 2019 ‘Netherlands Invitational’ and swam away with seventeen medals, including five gold, after an outstanding weekend of racing. The squad of twelve competed in the 50m and 25m pools against international opposition from Belgium, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Romania and the UK. Five swimmers medalled, while the rest of the team achieved numerous personal bests. It rained gold all weekend for sixteen-year-old Bethany EagleBrown who warmed up for next month’s British Swimming Championships with three first place finishes in the 50m pool. Bethany won gold in the 100m butterfly, alongside the 50m and 100m freestyle titles. She

also collected silver in the 100m backstroke and 50m butterfly, and bronze in the 50m backstroke. Also topping the podium was Holly Leggott in the 200m freestyle, who also added four more medals to her tally, with three silver – 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 200IM – and one bronze in the 100m freestyle. Lilly Tappern, swimming in the 25m pool, took home a hat-trick of medals, with silvers in the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle, and bronze in the 100m breaststroke. Her older sister, Amy, was also among the medals, winning bronze in the 200IM. Leading the way for the boys’ team was Harry Cardell, who struck gold in the 200m freestyle and bronze in the 100m butterfly. The rest of the team also put in
strong performances, achieving many personal bests. They were: Lauren Saunderson, Bailey Jackson-Chilvers, Lottie Bussey, Millie Bussey, Maya Sangiorgio, Bethany Wilde and George Shaw. Lynn Chapman, Deepings Swimming Club Head Coach, said: “Despite travelling overnight on the ferry, the team showed no sign of fatigue. They were really excited for this meet, which resulted in some excellent swims by all swimmers. It was fantastic to come away with seventeen medals and it was a great experience to be mixing with, and competing against, other countries.”

Company Directors: Your Pension Needs You! - by Matthew Biggs - Liberty Partnership Ltd
Have you noticed that your Corporation Tax bill keeps getting bigger? But have you ever thought about how a pension can help? If we’re being honest, I’d guess probably not. But there are many ways in which your business could benefit from getting the most out of your pension.
make an employer contribution through your company.
We see a lot of clients in the office who are either self-employed or directors of their limited company, towards the end of the Tax Year (though they should probably come and see us much sooner than the end of the Tax Year!) This is often because they are keen to utilise their allowances when it comes to pensions contributions, but why? Well, to start with, a well-timed personal pension contribution can help limit the amount of Income Tax you could be liable to – and the same can be said about Corporation Tax if you were to

How can a pension contribution help you pay less Corporation Tax I hear you ask? Well, an employer pension contribution into a workplace pension is treated as an ‘allowable business expense’ and can therefore be taken from any pre-tax profits your company may have. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Of course, there are limitations to this, but one thing is for sure, something as innocent as a pension contribution could benefit your business in ways you’d never have thought. If you would like to find out more about how your pension can help your business, please call our office on 01778 342291 to arrange a FREE initial consultation with one of our friendly and experienced Financial Planners.

Six Great Reasons to Get on Your Bike by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness
S
tationary fitness bikes continue to be one of the most popular pieces of exercise equipment on the market. “Spinning Classes” are group sessions, set to music with a motivational instructor to spur you on. Renu launched virtual spin classes in January and here are some great reasons to give it a try: Easy on the joints – Indoor cycling is a low impact activity. People recovering from orthopaedic injuries often participate in indoor cycling as part of the rehabilitation process. If cycling is done correctly, there is minimal impact on the hip, knee and ankle joints. A person, whether recovering from injury or not, avoids the pounding associated with other activities, such as running. Muscular Endurance – When you are pedalling against resistance in indoor cycling you increase the endurance of the muscles in the legs to include the quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteus, and the calf muscles. Working these muscles also helps to strengthen surrounding bones, tendons and ligaments, increasing overall strength, so that activities of daily living can be performed with ease. Reduced Stress Levels - We’ve all heard about the runner’s “high”. An indoor cycling class can provide that same rush of adrenaline and a release
of happy, mood-inducing neurotransmitters known as endorphins. Endorphins tend to create feelings of euphoria, lower stress levels, and enhance the body’s immune response. Cardiovascular - Our indoor cycling classes can keep your heart rate well within a vigorous range of intensity for approximately 30-45 minutes. As with all continuous cardiovascular activity, an indoor cycling programme can help lower the risk of coronary artery disease, and aid weight control. Work at your level - You can vary the resistance on the bike to suit your fitness level. Therefore, you can have several people in the class, all following the same instructor, but some will be working at a higher level than others. This means that you can build your fitness in a safe environment where your intensity level is not determined by the gradient on a hill or a head wind! No choreography to follow – You simply get on and pedal to some really motivating music. No need to worry about which foot … or going the wrong way! If you are still not sure, take a look at these comments from our clients: “I love the fact that I can just decide at a moment’s notice to turn up and do a class when it suits me.” “It feels just like you are in a class full of people, even if you are the only one in the class.” “I love the music!” “I didn’t have the confidence to join a class, but now I have tried virtual spin it has inspired me to do it much more often.”

Professional Ear Care and Safe Syringing by Jane Russell RGN BSc(Hons) INP
Y
our ears are just as important as your eyes and teeth. Whilst most people will visit an optician and a dentist at least once a year and sometimes more for a check-up, the ears tend to be neglected.
Good hearing and healthy ears play an important part in your quality of life. If you have ever experienced reduced, or even lost your hearing for a short period of time, then you’ll know just how frustrating and lonely it can be. For some people, this could make them feel very vulnerable, especially if they live alone. If you feel you have a problem with your ears, don’t just ignore it. There are many conditions that can affect your hearing, such as ear infections or ear wax build up. Some are very straightforward to fix and generally, as with so many other things in life, the sooner you have them checked, the sooner you can get back to normal. Ear wax is completely normal; it is produced by the ear to provide protection. Ears are actually self-cleaning and you should never attempt to remove the wax yourself. Although it can be tempting, using items such as cotton buds can actually push the wax further down the ear canal and end up totally blocking your ear. The cotton wool tip can even damage your ear canal..... as can matches, hair grips and twigs! To help reduce the chances of problems with your ears, you should always try and keep them dry and protected from water. Using an ear plug when you go swimming or even showering is advisable. Wet ears can cause eczema, dermatitis, runny ears and infections. You could use cotton wool as a plug BUT ONLY if you smear it with Vaseline to ensure you do not damage the ear canal with the fibres. If you have an ear problem, it is recommended that you see a trained, competent practitioner in ear care. They have specialist equipment that allows them to see into your ear canal with the correct lighting, and are able to provide the correct and safe treatment. For ear wax, ear syringing / irrigation, when performed by qualified practitioners, is safe and effective. Please do not try internet “do it yourself ear syringing kits”. Effective treatment does not necessarily mean expensive treatment. At the Wellhead Practice, Jane Russell offers patients an initial assessment for £10. Your ears will be examined, and you’ll be given recommendations, ranging from general advice to suggested treatment. Ear syringing starts at £35. Jane Russell RGN BSc(Hons) INP qualified as a nurse in 1992, completed her advanced diploma in ear care in 2001 and has

Take to the Skies with Confidence It’s that time of year when many people are looking forward to getting on a plane and getting away from it all, for that all-important summer break away in the sun. But, for some, the thought of flying can make them feel a little uneasy. So if you have a minor phobia about taking to the skies, perhaps solution focused hypnotherapy can help you feel calmer, more confident and relaxed about that next all-important flight. Using safe techniques, hypnotherapy can help you to overcome that minor phobia of fear that may have been holding you back for so long. I am a fully insured and qualified solution focused hypnotherapy practitioner, based at Wake House in Bourne. I work with clients who may dislike aspects of flying that can result in them feeling a bit nervous before they get onto a plane, or whilst they are on board. Over a period of normally three to four hypnotherapy sessions, I can help someone feel more confident about flying, with the sole aim of aiding them to board a plane feeling relaxed and calm. I use specific hypnotherapy techniques which involve helping people overcome specific phobia responses, which can range from flying to fear of spiders.
hypnotherapy and working together with their desire for positive change.
To help someone gain confidence in an area of their life is a fantastic feeling, and it is great that the clients themselves go on to gain confidence as an air passenger or in other areas of their life, all thanks to solution focused
Positive Thoughts,
Solution focused hypnotherapy can also be used to help ease stress, improve confidence, aid in weight management, and can help people to become nonsmokers. For further information on Hummingbird Hypnotherapy and positive workshops and relaxation, please visit www. hummingbirdhypnotherapy.co.uk.

EMPIRE GYM - 5 YEARS IN - TIME July 14th 2014 was when the doors opened on the new exciting addition to Deepings’ society… Empire Gym. On Bastille Day indeed. What revolutions were to unfold? What would it be like? Who were those behind the idea? Who would be using it? What will it cost? People would ask. The fitness industry for those who are involved in it, whether it is those opening fitness businesses or those regularly using them, knows its purpose. It knows what is important and it knows what the core idea, the very meaning of fitness, its mission, is about. At least that is certainly true for independent gyms. And I’ll give a wonderful example of that mission in glorious, colourful brushstrokes in a moment. A quote I saw only yesterday from writer C.S Lewis, reads; “What you see and what you hear depend a great deal upon where you are standing.” How true this is. Indeed, one is
certainly allowed to formulate an opinion on anything, and one’s speech should always be free, but you would hope such opinion and subsequent vocalisation is based at least upon personal experience, research, conversation and some semblance of fact. And you would hope that it will be levied upon those who want to listen, or not, in a constructive way. But all gyms everywhere, it seems, even before their doors are fully open, need to prove to the greater population that they are not typical of a stereotype put upon them by those who have never attended one. This is our greatest challenge and indeed being successful in changing such perceptions has been our greatest and most satisfying achievement so far. Famous historical painter Paul Cezanne once said; “Don’t be an art critic, but paint, there lies salvation.” And we see people painting, rather than criticising, in greater numbers than ever. So, achievement we have made, but whose achievement is it? We, the Weston family and all those who make Empire work, only provide a canvas, a place upon which the glorious, colourful brushstrokes manifest themselves. The achievement is in, and is owned by, the people. The customers, the members. The painters!

Colourful, vibrant, daring, diverse. But their brushstrokes differ. Some splash onto the canvas with loud and uplifting abandon. Some with a confident sweep of understated grace, others with tentative dabs of apprehension and nervousness. But the canvas will not judge. It will only allow each person to be free to paint and discover what picture may emerge. Literally speaking, Empire has become, in its physical architectural make up, a very vibrant and colourful place. The music too is always of loud, relentless and purposeful beat. All designed to be uplifting, motivational and positive. Then, every now and again, the canvas is home to a masterpiece. There have been quite a few. • My brother’s brilliant work with people with Cerebral Palsy, which is now leading to referrals from others with the condition. • The Gym’s work helping people with Parkinson’s Disease and Pre-Diabetes. • Being well versed in cardiac rehab procedures and safe training techniques. • Our charitable relationship with Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice that is approaching £20,000, raised in the last two years. • And indeed, our daily interactions with people who are facing challenges of any and all types, whether they be physical, mental or otherwise.

E ENOUGH TO LEAVE A LEGACY? We listen. We talk to people. Indeed, our experiences stretch way beyond physical fitness. We are in the business of lifting people up. Or rather showing people just how they are infinitely capable of lifting themselves. But the latest masterpiece belongs to two remarkable ladies who have just picked up a brush. Two ladies who have inspired us. And I want to make them the feature of the rest of this article. They are Kate Presneill (in the black) and Carmela Cocozza (in the red), who both live with MS (Multiple Sclerosis). Both have now trained on several occasions at Empire with our compliments. They attend with their partners, Mark and Iain, and with their neurological physiotherapists. Their journeys at Empire began with a phone call. This, in itself, is wonderful as the Empire reputation meant that in the very outset both Kate and Carmela felt that they could call us and talk about their situation with a view to us all taking it forward. What has impressed me most about them both is their demeanours. Matter of fact, happy, positive, forwardthinking and frankly a pleasure to be in the company of. People working positively to maintain and improve their circumstances. The mood was also aided when Carmela’s partner Iain gave us a rendition of ‘Big fish little fish cardboard box’ in response to the soundtrack on in the gym at the
a u gus t 2 019
time! It takes a team and a sense of humour, and such a light-hearted moment is a superb example of that kind of positive love and support that is clear to see in both couples. Before I go any further…What is MS? Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition that affects your brain and spinal cord. In MS, the coating that protects your nerves (myelin) is damaged. This causes a range of symptoms like blurred vision and problems with how we move think and feel. Once diagnosed, MS stays with you for life, but treatments and specialists can help you to manage the condition and its symptoms. More than 100,000 people in the UK have MS. In the UK people are most likely to find out they have MS in their thirties, forties and fifties. But the first signs of MS often start years earlier. Many people notice
their first symptoms years before they get their diagnosis. MS affects almost three times as many women as men. (The MS Society. See www.mssociety. org.uk). So, how do Kate and Carmela feel their experiences with exercise at Empire Gym are of benefit? Kate explains; “I am a lot fitter now, which helps with my movement and confidence. Going to the gym makes me feel awake and less sluggish. Being around people is also of benefit as I feel like part of society rather than feeling side-lined. On the pin-loaded leg press in the gym I can now do 50 reps with no additional weight. Having spoken to the MS Society about my new exercise programme, they have said exercise is of real benefit as it reminds my nerves to fire.”

Health Carmela told us; “Living with MS is extremely challenging. To say the least. Every day is a struggle to complete normal tasks whilst coping with pain, fatigue and general frustration. Joining Empire Gym has given me a sense of normality. When I am in the gym I feel that my difficulties are understood and considered, not only by Matt and Dave but also by Empire’s other members. Mild exercise relieves my muscle spasms, helps maintain my upper body strength and gives me an overall sense of wellbeing. Empire Gym has given me the opportunity to regain my confidence to be part of an able-bodied environment, without feeling out of place. Thank you Empire Gym.” To read such feedback is moving indeed. But I have said to both Kate and Carmela and their families, the pleasure and privilege is ours. Here are two extremely strong minded and indeed strong bodied women who, by being at the gym, are re-defining what it means to be determined and positive and forwardthinking. In every stage of progress, with every milestone reached and exceeded and in every smile in the face of adversity they are inspiring everyone who sees, talks to or reads about them. These two women have recognised the availability of a canvas that is for them. And they are painting a compelling image. In the gallery of achievement here at Empire and indeed in society at large, they have pride of place with the very best.
So, it is proven, thanks to brilliant people, five years is long enough to leave a legacy. One of inspiration, positivity, hard work, honesty and family values. One of pride in our community. One of doing the right thing for the right people all the time. And, if you are facing challenges, however big or small, let me leave you with this; “If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.’ Vincent Van Gogh. Much love as always.

The Potting Shed August is the month when you “reap what you have sown!” What could be more rewarding than to eat a meal where the fresh produce is the result of your hard work?Make sure that you harvest crops such as courgettes, runner and French beans regularly before they grow too large and stringy – the more you pick the more you get! Trips to the allotment or vegetable plot will be more about watering and harvesting than planting but there are still one or two crops that you can sow: mainly lettuces and salad leaves, spring onions, radishes, Japanese onion seeds (in situ), and a last batch of carrots and turnips. As you harvest your crops and create some space, you can transplant winter and spring cauliflowers, sprouting broccoli and kale, and sow a few more seeds for spring cabbage. Keep them well-watered, and planting them through weed suppressant material should help keep the moisture in and the soil warmer. Also keeping the weeds at bay is important (which in the drier months –if we get any – should be less prolific); a regular hoeing should be sufficient. To retain precious moisture, it can help to add mulch around your crops to prevent excess evaporation in drier weather, preferably immediately after it has rained. Other jobs for this month include: • Prune gooseberry and currant bushes. • Strawberry runners that have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot.
• Cut to the ground all raspberry canes that have borne fruit this year, and tie in the new green canes that will produce next year’s fruit. • Continue pinching out tomatoes and don’t forget to provide support for the plants as they become more heavily laden - also for cucumbers, peppers and even fruit trees. • Keep earthing up potatoes to prevent the tubers being exposed and also brassicas to support unsteady stems. •
Dig over any spaces that have been left from harvesting crops, where you could grow green manure such as clover or vetch, which will provide nitrogen for the soil, or alfalfa, cress or mustard which will help break up the soil.
•
Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes as this will encourage growth lower down, and harvest regularly before they become tough and stringy: you can let some grow on to produce bean seeds for next year.
• Outdoor tomatoes should have their growth stopped by the middle of the month – nip out the leading growing shoot just above the highest truss. •
Be on the lookout for potato blight, especially if the weather is damp and humid; cut off the stems at ground level as soon as you see the tell-tale brown fungal patches. This prevents the blight reaching the tubers.
Enjoy the fruits of your labour!

S & J Windows and Conservatories
– Local Firm Providing a Quality Service Family-run company, S & J Windows and Conservatories, are one of the leading suppliers and installers of doors, conservatories and uPVC windows throughout the region, and are now entering their twenty-sixth year of continuous trading. Local man, Steve Kell, and the team are continuing to build on the fine reputation for delivering top quality products and installation services, at highly competitive prices. From uPVC double glazing and orangeries to soffits and fascias and double glazing repairs, S & J’s fully qualified workforce have the knowledge and expertise to successfully complete their installations quickly and efficiently. They are dedicated to providing all of their many customers with an expert and unrivalled service, making them a company that can be trusted. Their two teams of fitters operate across the area from Bourne, Stamford and The Deepings, down through Peterborough, Huntingdon and St Neots, so they can easily access any location within these local regions. It is often the case that one satisfied customer within the local area is so impressed with the S & J products and service, that a glowing recommendation leads to further projects much further afield. Hence the S & J teams of fitters have, in recent years, been busy in London, Oxford, Skegness and Lincoln. Having been established in the area for so long has meant that Steve can now look at their installations from more than twenty years ago, where the original wooden frames would have perhaps been replaced with aluminium ones.
Those same customers are now seeing S & J return with replacement uPVC frames, knowing that the same level of quality workmanship and competitive pricing will have remained a key feature. Besides the ‘windows, doors, fascias and soffits’ part of the operation, Steve explains how many houseowners are now moving away from the practice of having their conservatory built with a polycarbonate roof, the transparent covering which notoriously makes the room into an oven in the summer months and then into a fridge, when the temperatures drop. This, of course, has made many expensive additions to the house virtual ‘no go areas’, (particularly when a summer such as this one comes around!) S & J have the solution with their tiled effect, “warm roof”, which has proved to be a very popular addition to their operation. Rather than simply cover an existing roof with the new composite tiles, S & J will remove the entire roof and replace it, ensuring that there will be no sagging in the future. Whatever the product, S & J pride themselves on their first class customer service and professional workmanship for total customer satisfaction. All of their products and installations are tailored to fit with the customer’s specific requirements - no matter what the query, they will find the ideal solution for you. The company now offers their customers finance arrangements. Acting as ‘introducers of finance’, S & J can ensure that the cost of the project can be spread over a period of time. See their website for further details.

Home Interiors
Bring Back Papers! Where wallpapers were once used liberally throughout our homes, the trend to turn to paint and keep the walls in simple flatter textures saw papers almost disappear from our lives. In recent months, however, they have once again become very much in vogue! With papers adding subtle fabulous textures and keeping our interiors simple and interesting, a whole new dimension is now available for all of our pockets. Many websites can help your search with regard to colour and cost; these can also be useful to get an idea of what style you may like, and these are often supported by photographs of what a paper might look like in a room set. Personally, I like to be able to see the paper and feel the texture in making my selection. I think this is especially important when selecting a wall covering for an area that will bear higher traffic – the paper may need to have a vinyl face so that it is easily wiped down, and the thickness of the paper may need to be considered. There are of course many ways in which we can now use papers. With some rolls running into several hundreds of pounds – if it is that ‘must have’ for your interior, perhaps you could consider using it in a small
quantity by applying it to walls within panels, framed and hung as artwork, or inside a glass-fronted cabinet to display your drinks selection, china collection, ornaments or trophies! We have seen a beautiful selection of murals and wall panels if you really want an area to stand out; used in a bedroom, entrance hall or your living space, they can certainly add personality and flair. Designers Guild have recently launched a collection of dream-like, handpainted designs that are subtle and delicate; pared down with white wood and natural finishes, they make for a fresh look. Often these panels can be resized to your home’s dimensions – there is no point you purchasing a design that is three metres tall, if your ceilings are just two metres, unless of course you don’t like one third of the design! You will often find that with a wall panel or mural, there is a main design and
also a coordinate so that the main show doesn’t have to run around a whole space – focusing your eye on one area. Elitis have a beautiful selection of coordinate designs that can be used to complement a feature wall, directing you into an adjoining room, or simply by themselves to add depth and texture to a plain wall. Lincrusta have always had a place in the market for the textured wall finish, often used below the dado in entrance halls to protect the walls where they may be knocked frequently. Their new designs add a modern take on a finish that has been used much less recently. From this idea of adding texture, Arte provide a wonderful selection of wood veneer wall coverings, whilst Elitis have brought out an incredible velvet selection in jewel colours. Whatever your style, there are papers out there to suit your personality. Have fun!

Will & Probate Services
Protecting your Digital Assets by Nick Ash, Managing Director
Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram have all become an integral part of daily life for most people. They are amazing places to socialise and share, but they also hold a huge amount of data about us; our thoughts, our photos and so much more that they have learned about us as they follow us around the internet. However, most people have not thought about what happens to these accounts when they die: Who owns them? Who can administer them? Should they be deleted or memorialised? Believe me when I say that there is little that is more distressing than a bunch of ‘Happy Birthday’ messages from long lost ‘friends’ showing up on a timeline, months after a person has died. What about your e-mail accounts? Does your executor (assuming you have been good and have made your will!) know how to access your e-mail account to delete or archive it? Does s/he even know all of your e-mail addresses? In most cases the answer is no. Once again, the Birthday offers and Christmas greetings from random companies that a loved one once signed up for a newsletter or did business with can be very painful. Do you have any online bank accounts, or perhaps you have a
balance on your PayPal account? Maybe you have a photo archive on Dropbox, your family history painstakingly researched and detailed with Ancestry. Maybe you have a few quid in your National Lottery account or in an account with an online bookmaker. Your executors need to know about all of these, as they all form a part of your estate. The average person has over one hundred online logins; some are insignificant, but many are potentially valuable. More importantly, many of these will be online only, with no offline or paper records. Digital assets are a massive issue
that is only going to get bigger as we live more of our lives online. The good news is that there are solutions, so if you would like to have a chat about digital assets and protecting them, alongside your physical assets, give us a call on 01778 382723 and book a free consultation. But don’t get me started on Bitcoin and the other crypto-currencies! P.S. If you book your consultation before August 31st, you will get £100 off your final bill for any work which we do for you. P.P.S. This means that your will could cost as little as £99!

History
Discovering . . . St Guthlac’s Church Rex Needle
S
t Guthlac was born into a noble family in the English kingdom of Mercia and after a spell as a soldier, entered Repton monastery in Derbyshire at the age of 24 but two years later sought to live the life of a hermit and moved out to what was then the island of Crowland on St Bartholomew’s Day in the year 699. He is therefore celebrated for his work in helping establish Christianity in this part of the Lincolnshire fens and the parish church at Market Deeping is dedicated to his name while the stained glass windows in the chancel depict scenes from his life including one in which he is seen sailing through what is now the fens to establish his monastery at what we now know as Crowland Abbey. Today, the church is Grade I listed as being of architectural and historic importance and dates mainly from the 15th century although it contains much that is earlier and Anglo-Saxon masonry discovered in the grounds indicates that the site has been the centre of religious life here for 800 years. Maintenance and improvement has been carried out to the building regularly throughout the centuries, particularly during Victorian times when the cost was often met by the incumbents, notably in 1878 when the

work was extensive and took 18 months to complete and included the installation of new oak pews. Today, the battlemented tower of the church dominates the main street through the town, formerly the main A15 until the by-pass was built in 1998, and appropriately known as Church Street. An early 18th century sundial can be seen on the south face of the tower inscribed with the text “The day is thine” and is similar to that on the north face although there the text reads “The Night cometh”. Inside, there are Norman arcades in the nave while the porch is 13th century and shelters a modern door enriched with the original ironwork and an octagonal font with carved tracery. The two-manual pipe organ is Victorian and dates from 1882 while the church has a peal of eight bells, the original six cast in 1766 having been re-hung in 1989 when the old oak frame had fallen into disrepair but were later augmented by a further two that were installed at a cost of £20,000 with the help of a grant from the Lottery Millennium Fund and were first heard ringing out at harvest festival on 9th September 1998. Consumer Advice
Rotary Showcases Work of Young Artists Young artists in the Deepings area have once again been wowing supermarket shoppers with their creative work. The youngsters have been taking part in the annual Schools Art Competition, run by the Rotary Club of the Deepings. Entries were invited from primary schools in and around the Deepings area, with the competition divided into two sections – Key Stage One and Key Stage Two. All the submitted artwork was displayed at the Tesco store in Market Deeping. The competition attracted an impressive entry of over one hundred pieces of work, from nine different schools, and a panel of three independent judges had the difficult task of selecting the winners in each section. The results of the competition were: Key Stage One: 1. Jasmine Sutton (Deeping St James Primary School); 2. Taiah Brown (Linchfield Community Primary School); 3. Archie Renault (Langtoft Primary School). Key Stage Two: 1. Daniel Roberts (Northborough Primary School; 2. Amelia Rogers (John Clare School, Helpston); 3. Isobel Walker (Baston Primary School). School prize: Market Deeping Community Primary School. A prize of £50 was awarded to each of the individual winners, with £25 going to the runners-up and £15 for the third-placed entries. The prizes were presented by Deputy Mayor of Market Deeping, Councillor Xan Collins, and Rotary Club President, Jenny Spratt, with Tesco providing chocolate goodies for all the prizewinners. Competition organiser, John Lavery, said, “It was another excellent year, with the standard of work as high as ever, which is a tribute to all the young artists and the schools. We have been grateful once again for the continued support of the local schools and, as always, indebted to Tesco and the staff at the store for their support over the years.”

Stay Safe this Barbecue Season Consumer Advice from Safe Local Trades and Services Summer’s here, and whatever the weather, we Brits just love our barbecues! A great excuse for a spot of alfresco dining with family and friends, the popular social gathering offers the chance for the guys to show off their grill skills, the ladies to rustle up a tasty summer punch and the kids to have endless fun. If this sounds like your ideal barbecue (and what’s not to love?) then don’t allow anything to spoil it. The sad fact is that barbecues are involved in many hundreds of accidents that occur in the garden each year. The last time that figures were collected, through the Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System (HASS/ LASS) in 2002, an estimated 1,800 people visited A&E in the UK having had an accident involving a barbecue. The most common types of barbecue-related accidents, as shown by the HASS/LASS figures, were: • Burn/scald/other injury related to fire or flame – 800 • Cut/tear by sharp edges - 200 The vast majority of barbecue accidents (1,400) happened in a home setting. Some of the accidents lead to very serious burns, usually as a result of using an accelerant such as petrol to light the fuel. However, planning ahead and following some simple safety tips will ensure your barbecue is fun-filled and not a flaming failure. • Keep your barbecues away from flammable garden furniture such as wooden or plastic chairs. • Move your barbecue away from sheds, fences, overhanging branches and foliage, and never light it in an enclosed space. • Never leave a barbecue unattended. • Never let children too close to the barbecue. • Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues. • If you’re a gas barbecue user, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder. • When choosing a barbecue, stability is essential - ensure the one you choose is strong and sturdy. • Check your barbecue is in good condition (particularly if you have not used it for some time) and look for loose or damaged parts that may need adjustment or repair. To protect you, your family and your home, it is advisable to have working fire alarms in your property and to generally be fire-safety savvy. And it’s not just barbecues that can cause an outdoor hazard: • Ensure all lanterns and candles with a naked flame are fully extinguished when you leave the garden. • Never leave children unattended in, or near, inflatable pools or similar if they contain water. The same applies to garden ponds. Take care also when visiting other people’s gardens - children can drown in less than 3cm of water! • Clear away unused garden hoses and tools – which can be easily tripped over. • And finally, protect and secure your home and garden by securely locking back gates, sheds, garages and windows on balmy evenings. As we pass the halfway point of the year, harvesting is now upon us. As vets, we see the passing of the year with the different conditions presented to us in our patients autumn diarrhoea, spring fleas and tree pollen allergies, and in high summer the dreaded wheat and grass awns or seeds.
Another typical presentation of grass awns is the head tilt and violent head shaking that occurs when the awn goes into the ear canal. William Hildyard C of E Primary and Nursery School William Hildyard Church of England Primary and Nursery School were delighted to be part of the second Literary Festival for the Deepings. Children in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 were engrossed in the summer stories, read by Hazel Foley and Clare Andrew, who lead story-telling activities at The Deepings Library. Children in Years 3, 4 and 5 were thoroughly entertained by author and comedian James Campbell (‘The Funny Life of Teachers’), whilst pupils in Year 6 enjoyed meeting Cathy Cassidy (‘Fortune Cookie’).

Over 150 children from the school entered a competition run by Tesco to design a book cover for their favourite book. Florence Wrigley, Jake Kusznir and Isla Hepplewhite were worthy winners. Mrs Lucas, the subject leader for English, said, “We would like to say a big thank you to all involved in the Literary Festival. What a fabulous way to encourage children in Market Deeping to love reading and writing!”

The Seals of Norfolk
by Lydia Pinfold, Pinfold Photographic
T
he East Coast of the UK is one of the best places to see seals all year round. Whether you go during the pupping season or when they bask on land during the summer months, there is a good chance of getting some great images of these marine mammals. The two species that grace our waters are grey and common seals. The common seals are best seen during the summer months (from June to August), with their pups alongside them, and grey seals give birth to pups between November and early February. I
I have visited seals off Blakeney Point on two occasions, both by boat, and from both of these experiences I noticed that the seals can be very inquisitive! The grey bulls would drift past the boat keeping their gaze on myself and the other passengers throughout. For the majority of wildlife encounters, I use my 100-400mm lens to capture animals from a safe distance without disturbing them, but on these occasions the seals in the water would get so close to the boat that they would fill up the whole frame! The seals that were resting on land were unfazed by the passing boats, and the females would tend to their pups naturally as if we weren’t even there, allowing some beautiful natural shots of pups suckling. Other places that you can visit seals along the East Coast include
Pinfold Photographic 64

T H E
Hunstanton and Horsey Beach, as the seals would often rest on the beaches regularly used by the public. It is very important, as it is with any wildlife encounter, that you respect the animals by keeping a fair distance from them, especially when pups are around. Getting too close could result in you or the animals being put into serious danger.

Martin Coulson – Locksmith
Martin Coulson
Ibal qualified locksmith
Useful tip: When you move into a new, pre-owned property, get the locks changed – you never know who still has a key to get into your (new) home! That sound advice comes courtesy of local sole trader, Martin Coulson, who set up his business two years ago, and who is now developing a favourable reputation, as a qualified locksmith, across his trading area, within a twenty-five mile radius of Peterborough. Martin’s work includes the supply and fitting of most new types of lock, for both domestic and commercial premises. Available at the end of a phone twenty-four hours a day, Martin can also be called upon to repair jammed doors, and to help people who have been locked out of their home. Needless to say, he could also replace your locks, were you to actually follow his advice above!
