Introduction

Welcome to Your October Issue. Welcome to October’s issue. Don’t forget that “Stoptober” is now upon us, a movement that has already driven over one million ‘quit attempts’ to date and is the biggest mass quit attempt in the country. It is based on research that shows that if you can stop smoking for twenty-eight days, you are five times more likely to stay smoke-free for good. Why not have a go this year? For useful information, including tips and advice to stop smoking, search ‘Stoptober’, or visit www.healthypeterborough.co.uk With the money you’ve saved then treat yourselves to a Christmas to remember – less than a hundred days from now! But before then, don’t forget to stock up for when those “Trick or Treaters” pay you a visit on Hallowe’en. Don’t forget to change your clocks (“Spring forward, Fall back”), as we lose the hour on Sunday October 27th. And finally, a huge thank you goes out to Rex Needle, our resident historian whose monthly “Discovering …” features have informed and entertained us all for over six years – enjoy your retirement Rex!

Claire x

As we move on from what has been, at times, one very hot summer into the cooler autumn days, thoughts soon start turning towards the winter and particularly to Christmas. Several of our local hostelries are already providing menus and advanced notices of fabulous times ahead. We’re including some for you this month to get those taste buds tingling. Let’s hope that, by then, we might have some resolution to this ongoing little pantomime which has been occasionally in the news since 2016. (I made a promise that I wouldn’t mention Brexit in this esteemed publication, so I must keep my word!) Looking ahead, on a personal note, our delight at hearing that we’re to become first-time grandparents in the new year has been slightly tempered when we can now enter the “empty nesters” club with our youngest, Patrick, taking the waters (and more) in Manchester. And finally, I was asked last week whether I thought all of those yellow bikes adorning our countryside after the “Bourne Cicle Festival” would go for recycling. I said, “Don’t ask me, I wheely don’t know, I’m not the spokesman, but I’ll give him a bell!” Enjoy the read!

Seasonal Delights with Amy at Vine House Farm AUTUMN HIGHLIGHTS

The seasonal change is well underway & the time has come to once again enjoy the wonderful produce that autumn has to offer. Pumpkins & squashes are a particular highlight with their vibrant colours & interesting patterns. They are delicious roasted, made into soup or even spiralised as a gluten-free alternative to pasta. The spaghetti squash will even take the hard work of spiralising away, as once roasted it will simply turn into spaghetti like strands with the use of a fork.

ENJOY.... APPLES & PEARS English apples & pears not only taste wonderful but buying British also supports our local growers. The season began with Discovery & we now have Gala, Russet & Cox, widely regarded as the finest of all eating apples. We grow our own Conference pears, which have a very sweet & juicy flesh, a real treat.

An Audience with Serenity Crane An audience with Serenity Crane will be filled with entertainment. Fun and facts will abound, and interaction with the audience is guaranteed. This somewhat unusual character will amuse and excite, but above all else, he will hope to inspire. Your inspiration will come from at least one of the topics covered. You will be invited to ask any questions you may have about the twenty-two books that Serenity has published. You may ask about anything at all. There is a host of subjects about which Serenity has some considerable expertise including education, health, physiotherapy, writing, sport, publishing and travel. The books that Serenity Crane has written cover a wide range of subjects and are generally entitled pairs of animals, for example “The Antelope and the Anatolian Shepherd Dog”, “The Butterfly and the Black Fruit Fly”, “The Chinese Panda and the Chinese Pot-Bellied Pig”. You get the gist, but “The Jaguar and the Jackrabbit” are metaphors for people, as are some of the other books. Serenity Crane is supported by his wife Jackie who has edited all of the books and has suffered his long periods of writing at the computer. Jackie is a fitness fanatic and has a long career in accounting. Together they make a formidable team.

AN AUDIENCE WITH SERENITY CRANE Author, poet and inspirational speaker. Writer and publishing training. Avoid the pitfalls and expense, succinctly, with fun. Be amazed by his stories. Guest speaker, at major events and impromptu gatherings.

Rex Needle – Farewell and Many Thanks For the past six years, the readers of both “Discovering Bourne” and “Discovering the Deepings” have had the good fortune to have been entertained every month by a piece of wellresearched and informative writing on a specific feature in the local area, usually with some element of historical interest. These monthly contributions I know have been a treat for many and a “Welcome to our part of South Lincolnshire” greeting for the thousands of “newcomers” who have made their home in our towns and villages in recent years. It is with a feeling of gratitude for what Rex Needle has produced for us over the years, yet also regret that he will be producing no more, that I am informing you of his decision to retire. This will bring to an end, not only this six-year sojourn as our resident historical guru, but more significantly his long and illustrious career as a former Fleet Street journalist; as the editor of the “Bourne website” since 1998; and as the author of several books. Approaching “four score years and ten”, Rex recently informed us of his decision to close the pages of his wonderful working life. Our magazines will be all the poorer for this, but his back-catalogue will always be available for any aspiring young writer to learn just how this ‘writing lark’ should be done! Our thanks for your many contributions, Rex, and best wishes to both you and Elke for a long and relaxing retirement.

News Exclusive - Monster Duck Sighted on the River Welland! The Deepings Lions had a surprise in store for the many visitors who attended their annual Duck Race and Street Fair on Sunday September 1st in Deeping St James. A massive inflatable duck had landed on the island near the weir. “Big Duckie” was kindly supplied by ‘Bourne Fun’. Clyde Thompson, who runs the company, said, “We were pleased to support the Lions and delighted that our duck was such a crowd pleaser”. This year, the weather was sunny and dry, perfect racing conditions, and the wind was in the right direction and the ducks glided elegantly through the water. Some needed a bit of help with their navigation which was provided by members of the Welland and Deepings Scouts Canoe Club and Guy Porteous from Deepings Lions. Chairman of Deeping St James Parish Council, Steve Gilbert, opened the event and presented the Carnival Queen, Katy Jakeman, with an engraved trophy. With the help of Councillor Gilbert and Nicki Waldie, President of Deepings Lions, Katy started all four races with a blast on the klaxon. The first three were sponsored by local businesses and were won by the Goat Pub, Oakwood Estate Agents and Godsey Lane Coffee Shop. In the main race, the first prize of £100 was won by Sam Stubbs, second prize of £50 by Sophie Plunk, and the third of £25 by Graham Stapleton. As well as the duck races there was more to entertain the crowd with a range of rides, stalls, street buskers, a Zumba demonstration and Punch and Judy shows which were a great hit with all ages. This year, the event was fund raising for St. Barnabas Hospice. Lion, Dave Coombs, one of the organisers, known around the Deepings as “Mr Duck Man”, said, “As well as being a fun day out, we were pleased to have raised funds for St Barnabas Hospice. They do really wonderful work and we were very pleased to help them. We’re still waiting for some sponsorship monies to come in, but we hope to present them with a cheque soon for over £2,000.” Deepings Lions President, Nicki, added, “We would like to thank everyone who helped make the event so successful including all the visitors, those who sponsored a duck, stall holders, local businesses and all our volunteers”. oct obe r 2 0 1 9

What is HiiT Training?

by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness

H

igh intensity interval Training (HiiT) can sound like it is a training regime for elite athletes, yet it has become one of the most popular training formats to reach the fitness industry over the last six years. HiiT training consists of short bursts of various activities to elevate the heart rate and increase muscular strength and endurance with variable breaks in between. Here are a few reasons why it has become so popular: Time-effective results The pressures of modern life can leave us little time for specific exercise, particularly if it is not top on our favourite activities list. HiiT classes or workouts should only last up to thirty to forty minutes, so it is much more achievable to fit them into your busy schedule. Suitable for everyone The term “high intensity” can suggest that it is not suitable if you are unaccustomed to regular exercise. A well-trained instructor will be able to establish your current fitness levels and offer alternatives to ensure you are working at the right intensity for you. For example, a novice exerciser will achieve the same results with thirty seconds of vigorous marching on the spot as a more highly trained individual will get through thirty second sprints.

Did anyone say “menopause” and “middle-age-spread”? This type of activity helps to balance hormones and relieve menopausal symptoms and help to aid weight loss, particularly in the mid section. Here at Renu, I have been advocating the benefits of a thirty-minute, circuit-based workout for the last twelve years, and many women of all ages and abilities have achieved fantastic results when they follow our gym or class programme. Do you have to attend a class? HiiT training is varied and transferable to your circumstances. I offer classes at Renu on a weekly basis, but I also show how you can utilise our gym equipment to get the same results. You can follow a HiiT programme on a spin bike, when you are out for a walk, or with

a minimum of equipment in your kitchen. You just need a programme that is suitable for you. Feel-good factor HiiT results in increased endorphin releases in the brain, which plays a role in dampening physical and emotional stress. This helps to improve mood, improve sleep patterns and help you feel more motivated for your next workout. Claire teaches HiiT classes at Renu every Thursday morning and Monday and Thursday evenings. She also promotes HiiT style training in the Renu gym and in spin classes, available all week. If you would like to find out how the Renu thirty-minute workout programmes can help you, please contact our reception team.

Take control of your body 30 minutes at a time. Gym and Spin membership just £20 per month with no minimum contract or joining fee.

Your Health

Ever Realised the Benefits of a Routine? by Nicole Woodcock, Hummingbird Hypnotherapy

We all enjoy knowing what’s next; that comforting feeling of knowing what’s ahead in the week and being prepared for it. Or you could be someone who flies by the seat of their pants, happy not to know and just take things day by day. I have just described myself. Unfortunately for some of us, this idea can create a lot of anxiety and can overwhelm us because we don’t really know what we’re doing. Feeling like this can trigger a primitive response in our brain which then questions everything that we do, causing indecisiveness and anxiety. Sound familiar? Once we access our primitive brain and trigger our “fight or flight”, we can respond in three ways - anger, anxiety or depression. Sometimes even all three. When we are in this situation, we have no access to the intellectual brain that holds all of our information and so were unable to find a solution.

Being able to start and commit to a new routine enables the brain to stay relaxed and not waiting for something to go wrong. We’re very good at pre-empting the ‘worst-casescenario’. So, where do you start? A new self-care routine is always a great idea and to start, give yourself half an hour, more if you have it, to relax the brain. Then decide what you want to do in that time, for instance meditate, read, write, exercise etc. - or a bit of everything.

Give yourself some “mind time”. The benefits over time can have a huge impact on the day. Better mood, less stress, greater emotional control and the best bit… looking out for yourself. Small, positive steps every day to build a consistent routine make life more manageable and this enables our brain to stay in its informative, confident and happy space. Struggling with negatives in life and needing some self-care? Get in touch!

Personal Training - Let Me Change Your Mind Simply by reading the title to this article you have created a picture in your mind’s eye of what personal training is, of what it means, and whether you are biased towards, or away from the idea.

Let me pose these questions to you, and try to answer some, or all, of them in your minds honestly: • Is there anything more important than your health? • Do you believe your health is in some way attached to the amount of exercise you do? • Do you do any exercise? • Do you do enough exercise? • Are you motivated to exercise? • If you don’t do any/enough exercise, why not? • What do you spend your disposable income on? • What do you do with your time? • Again … Is there anything more important than your health? So now you will be in one of three frames of thought … 1 Shut up Matt I don’t need to be preached at. 2 He has a point but I’m doing fine… I already exercise and I can motivate myself. 3

18

Actually, I could be doing more… I’m going to read on and see how exercise and personal training could change

D I S C O V E R I N G

my physical health, my mental health … my life.

Let me start the ‘convincing’ part of the article by saying there is nothing more satisfying than trying to be your best self. I make the distinction between ‘being’ and ‘trying to be’ because I don’t think anyone anywhere has ever got to a stage at which they are ‘done’. Nobody has ever stopped and said, “Right, ok, I can’t get any better.” Indeed, it is the trying to become one’s best self that brings the joy, the personal satisfaction and pride, the feeling of achievement and self-esteem and the respect of your family and peers that makes it all worthwhile. I know. I’ve been there and changed myself and I’m still chasing my best self for the benefit of me and my family. So, what is Personal Training? It depends upon which stage of the ‘journey’ you are at, and for such a short article I can best describe it in three parts. 1 - Accountability In the beginning, I would best describe it as committing to be accountable to yourself and, importantly another person (your trainer) in the knowledge that this will guarantee the completion of exercise that you were at risk of not

T H E

Deepings

completing had you been left to your own devices. Investment in a guaranteed improvement, however large or small. This is the PT as motivator. 2 – Insight I have never been one to preach about the scientific theories and technical genius solutions that qualified personal trainers have in their arsenal, simply because they/ we are ‘qualified’. Indeed, gaining the qualification is relatively easy with hard work and commitment. But the insight that is gained over time by personal trainers who walk the walk and do the training and who are immersed in the ‘fitness’ environment for long enough, brings a level of know how that must sit beside technical textbook knowledge. It is a cliché, but a truism to say that every single person is different, and their bodies and indeed minds will react in different ways, depending upon a myriad of things, from health considerations to lifestyle commitments. There is a necessary and essential, finely nuanced, approach brought by the very best personal trainers. 3 - Inspiration The demeanour of your trainer is everything. It is inevitable that people don’t always feel motivated.

oct obe r 2 0 1 9

Health This may be due to a bad day, a bad week or the insecurities and apprehensions that come with doing something new, challenging and outside of one’s comfort zone. This is not to say that a personal trainer must always force the ‘have a nice day’ cheesy-service smile at every given opportunity. But a personal trainer’s most important asset is their ability to understand people; to know when twenty minutes of the hour is going to be spent talking about what is on someone’s mind; to be almost a form of counsellor when required; and to be a trusted ally and friend. Only when these foundations are forged will people truly be in a place where they will push themselves to places that will take their physical progress through the roof. This is where genuinely enjoyable training manifests and hard graft becomes a passion and where the best part of it all happens… your physical work is rewarded with those natural feel-good drugs, endorphins. So personal training is about helping you to be motivated. It is about an experienced fitness professional being able to ‘tap into’ and share their knowledge, insight and nuanced solutions to make sure you are working in a way that brings best results for you personally, minimising ‘wasted’ effort. And it is about being trained by someone who creates an inspirational environment and

“We were delighted this month to receive a £100 donation to the Empire Gym Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall fundraising pot from Discovering The Deepings Magazine. The money is generously donated from proceeds generated by the Magazine’s annual Summer Treasure Hunt. • £30 for a single session.

At Empire Gym, we have options in terms of the trainer you can choose.

Lifestyle

The Great Geese Migration by Lydia Pinfold, Pinfold Photographic

N

ow that we have entered the autumn months, most of you may think that the wildlife seems to go away as the cold sets in. However, much of the UK is treated with the sights of a huge variety of winter visitors. One of the visitors that I have only recently come across in the last year is the dark-bellied brent goose. This is one of two species of brent geese, (the other being pale-bellied brent geese). They breed in Northern

Russia, and then spend their winter in the Southern and Eastern parts of England. Their appearance can be mistaken for that of Canada geese, which reside here all year round, but the brent geese lack the white chinstrap and light coloured chest, and are actually closer to the size of the common mallard duck. This time last year, I had the pleasure of witnessing a huge gathering of these winter visitors at Blakeney National Nature Reserve on the North Norfolk coast. After spending most of the day photographing seals, I, along with several other photographers was greeted with clear evening skies and huge waves of the geese stretching across the horizon. It was magical and I was so lost in the moment that I nearly didn’t take any pictures of it!

Pinfold Photographic 22

T H E

If you are hoping to see these a bit closer to home, I highly recommend a visit to RSPB Frampton Marsh Reserve, just outside Boston. I volunteer in the Visitor Centre at the weekend and, from October onwards, these geese, as well as other winter visitors, are easily viewable across the reserve up to the sea wall which overlooks part of The Wash. If you ever thought that there isn’t much to see or photograph in the winter, the wildlife calendar reveals so much more happening than many people may assume!

Preventing Gum Disease Creating a Whiter Smile. Some external stains on your teeth are due to tea, coffee, tobacco, red wine and other dietary factors, and can’t be removed by brushing alone. However, hygienist polishing can restore your teeth to their natural whiteness.

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy mouth. Unfortunately, most adults have some form of gum disease (periodontitis), but it often goes undetected for many years. This causes irreversible gum and bone damage, eventually resulting in the loss of teeth. However, a dental hygienist is qualified to treat such gum disease and here are: Six key benefits in seeing your hygienist or dentist regularly. Preventing Progressive Gum and Bone Loss. Periodontitis may manifest as bleeding gums, bad breath and loose teeth, but it may also be hidden. Fortunately, gum disease can be stopped and even reversed if caught in the early stages. Your hygienist will treat active disease, plus provide a tailored brushing regimen. Cleaning those ‘Hard to Reach’ Spots. Even people with excellent oral hygiene benefit from a hygienist’s help to find hidden plaque and calculus (tartar). Preventing Bad Breath. Halitosis odours are released by bacteria living under the gum edges. Dental scaling can effectively remove this harmful material.

Preventing Systemic Diseases. Poor dental hygiene is scientifically linked to the progression of heart and respiratory diseases and diabetes. To Prevent Oral Cancer. Your hygienist is trained to screen your mouth for early signs of oral cancer, and to provide advice on risk factors for oral cancer, such as smoking and alcohol. The Priestgate Clinic have just celebrated their first anniversary and are delighted to still be welcoming new patients for general dentistry, orthodontics and minor oral surgery. To book an appointment with Priestgate Dental Clinic’s highly experienced hygienist, then please contact ring 01733865000 or e-mail reception@priestgateclinic.co.uk.

Dentistry with a difference It’s a year since the Priestgate Dental Clinic opened, and we’re delighted by the fantastically positive responses we’ve received.

“We Shall Overcome : Langtoft 2019” - A Raised Fist and a Helping Hand - October 4th , 5th , 6th Child poverty, food banks, benefit sanctions, bedroom tax, cuts to disabled support, carers in crisis, soup kitchens, rough sleeping, homelessness, mental health crisis, pawn shops, payday lenders. Why do these things exist in one of the richest economies on earth? “We Shall Overcome” is a movement of musicians, artists, activists and community organisers who are angry about the human costs of austerity policies but who want to do something practical to help those affected. Over the weekend of October 4th, 5th and 6th, we’re encouraging people to organise gigs and events that will get direct help to those in our local communities who have been adversely affected by austerity policies. HOW IT WORKS Each event is used to directly help the community in which it is based. Some events ask for donations of provisions for their local food bank, others charge a moderate fee and take cash donations in a bucket. To become a part of “We Shall Overcome”, all you need is the desire to see an end to austerity, and the guts to do something about it – if you have, then join us.

WHAT WE HAVE ACHIEVED SO FAR The first “We Shall Overcome” took place in 2015; it returned and ran for a full week in October 2016, and has since run regular gigs up and down the land ... more than a thousand, raising an estimated £450,000 of cash, food, clothing and bedding for those hardest hit by austerity, and we have no intention of stopping until the need for us has passed. #WSO19 LANGTOFT– An evening of music and spoken word After the success of last year’s event, Langtoft is holding the only WSO event in this area again this year, in support of Bourne and Deeping Foodbanks. It takes place on Saturday October 5th at 7pm in Langtoft church. Entry is free – just bring a donation, your own drinks and snacks. Performers include: PENNYLESS DUO (Penny Stevens and Les Woods), ZEN, ROUTE 66 DUO (Pete and Sandee Lane), ROCK OF AGES, THESE ROGUES AND RUFFIANS, BET WASHBROOKE (poet), with more to be confirmed. If you are interested or require further information, please contact Mick Groom on 07791255087.

Bethany and Louis Compete at English Championships Two Deepings Swimming Club members qualified for the Swim England National Championships held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield in early August. Bethany Eagle-Brown competed in the 50m butterfly and Louis Metselaar in the 50m breaststroke against the best swimmers in England. Sixteen-year-old Bethany was in the mix for much of her heat, but faded slightly towards the end, placing her a respectable sixteenth in her age group, an impressive result as she had recently recovered from a chest infection. In his heat, Louis narrowly missed making the final by three-tenths of a second. Despite fatigue, he still posted his second fastest-ever long course 50m breaststroke time, to finish an excellent twelfth in the 28

seventeen years age group. Lynn Chapman, Deepings Swimming Club Head Coach, was proud of her swimmers’ performances, commenting, “Beth and Louis worked extremely hard to qualify for the nationals and, although neither of them had the perfect preparation due to illness and injury, they competed Deepings’ Louis Metselaar who competed at the 50m breaststroke hard to do themselves and at the Swim England National the club proud.” Championships in Sheffield. oct obe r 2 0 1 9

Deeping Rangers Blues Under 8s – New Season, New Sponsors. Jack Barton, who calls herself “a football mum”, writes to inform us that with the new football season comes some new, very welcome, sponsorship goodies for Deeping Rangers Blues Under 8s from three local firms. JDB Chartered Certified Accountants from Market Deeping and Langtoft’s Oakwood Car Sales have together provided the team with new kit and training tops, whilst MSP Property Services of Deeping St James have kitted out the team’s

coaches, Jonathan Hewitt and Jim Holloway, with smart new track suits. Jack explains, “The boys are a strong team of ten who have a busy season ahead of them playing various teams in the local area. They train every Monday evening with their coaches and their matches all take place on Saturdays. As parents, we are all super excited to support the boys and see them through their busy season.” The team certainly started the season in style, beating Boston Under 8s 6 – 3, the reward for which was a welldeserved chip supper provided by the club!

Friendship and Fun with “Deep In Friends” (a review by our correspondent) Are you at a loose end on a Tuesday and not sure where to go or what to do? Well, many people now go along to the Priory Church Hall at Deeping St. James, where ‘Deep In Friends’ have been meeting up fortnightly for the last eight years, for two hours of very varied activities. These can be anything from crafts and painting, through all manner of different games and competitions to speakers and demonstrations … and much more! Competitions have included Easter Bonnets and modelling in Play Dough, whilst later this month there will be pumpkin carving for Hallowe’en. Things can get very competitive, but there is also considerable hilarity, as some efforts can be less than successful, and it is all about enjoyment. There is always something interesting going on, like demonstrations and talks on such things as family histories, flower arranging, caring for your feet, first aid and bees. Members are encouraged to make their own suggestions for what should go on, and sometimes they talk about their own lives, - being the wife of a royal policeman for instance. Very often there will be ‘themed afternoons’, like Ascot Ladies Day - dressing up in their finery (men too) with horse racing; Wimbledon - strawberries and cream and tennis-themed games; Valentine’s Day, - lots of hearts and love songs. The red white and blue bunting is often on display, oc tob e r 2019

having celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday and last year’s Royal wedding, complete with their own ‘bride and groom’. Someone said that entering the hall was like being at a real wedding reception! With the help of a member with musical talent who creates backing tracks etc, they often put on their own shows, which have a crazy zaniness all of their own. “Riverdance”, synchronised swimming, Laurel and Hardy and the Spice Girls have all featured, any excuse for dressing up! Each year, there is a dance on a Sunday with live music and catering, and a Christmas Lunch. One member arranges trips out, like a visit to Cromer for the End of Pier Show, a boat trip on the River Trent from Nottingham, and an annual visit to the pantomime at Milton Keynes. Sunday lunch trips to various local hostelries are also very popular. The club is run by a seven-person committee, and currently membership is around fifty, aged from fifty-five to ninety, and comprising of men and women, couples, and people on their own. Many people have found other interests and made close friendships from this lively group. The venue is disability-friendly, and new members are welcome. Fees are £5 per year, with £2 payable for each visit. This includes the all-important tea and cakes halfway through, with a raffle. For more information, contact Vanessa on 01778 345113.

Your Garden

OCTOBER Gardening Tips “In the other gardens And all up the vale, From the Autumn bonfires See the smoke trail!” Robert Louis Stevenson from “Autumn Fires” This, to me, epitomises gardens and particularly allotments in October, as people are clearing away the remnants of the summer crops and burning the debris. That’s what it’s mainly all about in October, clearing away and preparing the ground for the winter months. A lot of the spent crops can be composted but it is best to shred woody stems such as sweetcorn, runner beans and cabbage and to burn any diseased crops. I always dig the plot over and “put it to bed.” Once dug and manured, (no need to dig it in), cover the soil with plastic or weed suppressant for the winter as this keeps the weeds at bay and, as it keeps the soil relatively warm, planting can start earlier in the spring. This time of year is perfect for moving or planting new fruit bushes and trees. Bare-rooted trees will benefit from the warmth still in the soil, which will help root development before the soil becomes too cold. If you like to use herbs, you could sow a pot of basil seeds and put it in a propagator or on a warm windowsill, keeping the soil moist. Parsley and mint can be dug up from an established clump, put in a pot and kept on the windowsill – much cheaper than buying pots from the supermarket! Crops that can be sown this month are: • Early broad beans. • Rhubarb crowns - or dividing large oversized crowns. • Japanese over - wintering onion sets. Although large onion sets look stronger, small or medium ones are less likely to bolt in the spring. • Last chance to transplant spring cabbages – be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves. • Plant garlic if you haven’t already done so. • Broad beans – early varieties should overwinter. Other jobs for this month include: • Continue to earth up celery and leeks. • Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd. • Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries. • Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas – leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould. • If you haven’t already done so, earth up or stake (or both) Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants. • Pick the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana – this gives off ethylene gas which speeds up ripening. • Cure pumpkins and squashes – cut and leave them to dry out in the sun; it hardens the skins and they will keep for longer. • Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost. • Remove runner bean canes; if left in the ground they will easily rot.

Enjoy those wonderful sunny days of autumn!

Home Interiors

The Role of the Interior Designer Part of the job of an interior designer is to find you something unique and special that not everyone else has. Creating spaces that are approachable and feel liveable, your designer drives for a fusion between aesthetic and practicality. It is important that the space feels comfortable and useful, rather than like a showroom. The service is accessible to anyone wanting to create a beautiful space, either in their home or business. Let’s dispel the myth that interior design is for the elite. A design service is available to anyone. If you are looking for a blind, a light, a mirror or a pot of paint, they help guide you through the available options to ensure that you get the exact product you need. This can save you time and money - I’m sure we have all purchased items over the internet to find they are not quite what we were expecting when they arrive, and returns are not always easy to arrange or at all possible. The designer will be offering fabrics from £15 p/m, often getting involved with re-covering or re-upholstering furniture and happily guiding you to incorporate pieces you already have to make your home feel new and refreshed, without costing more than it need. Your designer is also happy to advise when you are looking to invest

in a classic piece of furniture that will stand the test of time, making your budget go further and complement your taste and home. The collaborative experience of working with a designer ensures that you feel in control throughout the project. Finding the perfect ingredients for creating a space that reflects your own tastes and personality - possibly like a psychologist, helping you identify the best solutions to meet your own unique needs. Experience makes designers effcient at working with all budgets. Helping your money go further and handling the logistics of building works, soft furnishings or other key elements of your project in order to take away the stress of your development. It is so much more personal than shopping

online, allowing you to touch, feel and experience the products before committing to your purchases. A friendly face to help you make informed decisions without pressure, in your own time. As always, when working on your home or your business, take your time to make the decisions and enjoy the experience - only when the experience is enjoyable, will you fully enjoy the outcome. It is your space, have fun!

Will & Probate Services

Ten Things to Consider When You Decide to Make or Update Your Will by Nick Ash, Managing Director

We know it has been on your to-do list for years, so now you have got around to it, what should you do? Here are 10 points to consider:

1

Who will be your executors? These are the people who will wind up your estate, enact your wishes and distribute your belongings. Typically, couples will appoint their partner in the first instance, often followed by their children. Other common appointments are brothers and sisters, or other close relatives. You may also appoint professional executors to act on your behalf. (Avoid appointing executors from an older generation than your own.) It is vital to speak to them – they must be willing to take on the role. A commonly held misconception is that executors cannot be beneficiaries of a will; this is not so.

2

Who will be guardians for your children? If you have children under the age of 18, it is advisable to appoint a guardian. Appointments can include your own brothers and sisters, or older children (if over 18). Unmarried couples must ensure both parties have parental responsibility.

3

What do you own and what is it worth? It’s a good idea to make a list of the ‘big things’ and their approximate value.

4

Decide if you want to make specific cash legacies: Making your will is an opportunity to give monetary assets to people, groups or charities.

5

. Do you have specific item bequests? Most people have important or sentimental items that they wish to leave to specific individuals, such as a piece of jewellery or a painting.

6

What are your funeral wishes? Do you wish to be cremated or buried? Can your body be used for medical purposes? Do you want flowers at your funeral or donations to a charity? What music and which hymns should be sung at the service?

7

Who should the residue of your estate pass to? Decide who will receive the balance of your estate and in what proportion. Typically, in a situation where a couple are married with children, an estate residue would go to the partner in the first instance and then to the children equally thereafter.

8

Any exclusions? Consider if you wish to exclude anyone from your will. The reasons and implications of doing this can be discussed with your advisor.

9

Witnesses? You will need two people to witness the signing of your will; they must not be beneficiaries of your will.

10

Who should prepare your will? That’s easy - Will & Probate Services!

Do You Know About a “Deed of Variation”? - by Matthew Biggs - Liberty Partnership Ltd

make more sense, so that assets bypass them completely and, instead, pass directly to their children to perhaps use as a deposit for their first home, maybe pay off a mortgage or even help grandchildren with university fees.

An inheritance from a loved one is their final gift to you which would serve as a wonderful reminder of the person who has made it all possible. However, in certain instances, you might think that other people, perhaps family members, charities or anyone you feel could benefit more from an inheritance, should have received it. Well, did you know that you can change who receives an inheritance after the estate has been distributed?

The most important thing to remember is that there is a two-year window. Any Deed of Variation must be drawn up within twenty-four months of the death of the deceased and must be signed by all the executors and beneficiaries of the estate to be valid.

A Deed of Variation allows you to make changes to a deceased person’s will. An example of this is where an individual dies and leaves all that they own to their spouse. The question at this point is that, with the onset of time and perhaps ill health, is it wise to inherit all of a former spouse’s estate? A Deed of Variation could instead

With regards to the smart meter, customers do not have to accept one. A supplier cannot tell customers that they must have one installed. However, it might mean that they are not eligible for all the deals on offer. In future, the cheaper tariffs offered by suppliers might only be available to customers with smart meters. If customers do decide to go ahead, suppliers should explain the process beforehand; show how it works and give a number to call if anything goes wrong. There are benefits of having a smart meter, particularly in the way that they send daily meter readings to the supplier, meaning they can bill accurately for the energy used. They won’t automatically save money, but there is a digital ‘inhome’ display to keep track of how much energy is used, so customers can try to reduce it.

Consumer Advice

Misery and Mayhem Being Caused by a New Wave of Scams by Eileen Le Voi - Safe Local Trades This has been the summer of scams, in the form of postal, telephone and on-line fraud attempts – targeting everyone from holidaymakers to online daters. One of the latest and perhaps not so well-known scams is again targeting consumers, this time via automated phone calls pretending to be from their bank or credit card company. Victims have received an automated phone call claiming to be from their bank or card provider, saying there has been a suspicious transaction on their account. They were then asked to verify the transaction by pressing a number on their phone to take them through to an “agent” – who is actually a fraudster. Banking and finance trade association, UK Finance is reminding consumers of five warning signs to look out for during a phone call, which suggest that the caller could be a scammer: • The caller is insistent and doesn’t give you time to think or tries to stop you speaking to a family member or friend. • The caller asks you to transfer money to a different account.

ns Fre ul e ta tio

n

• The caller asks for your online banking passwords or four-digit card PIN.

co

• The caller asks you to withdraw money and hand it over for “safekeeping”. • The caller offers to send a courier to your home to collect cash, PINs, cards or cheque books to “protect” you from fraud.

And it doesn’t end there… Tax tricksters claiming to be from HMRC are also making misery for those running their own business through phishing scams. This is where an email purporting to be from HM Revenue & Customs can cause the recipient to become unnerved by content requesting money allegedly owed to the ‘tax man’. Scam e-mails of this sort not only look official but can often look like they’ve been sent from official government email addresses, making them harder to spot. Scammers sometimes even sign off phishing e-mails with the name or signature of a genuine HMRC employee for added authenticity.

52

It is always worth remembering that your bank, card provider or the police will NEVER contact you asking for personal information or requesting you to transfer money to another account. If you feel uncomfortable or suspicious during a call, hang up and call your bank or card provider directly on its official phone number.

Pets and Vets

By Deirdre Wilson

Deal or No Deal

Three years have passed since the most divisive vote this country has had in recent times, and the Brexit debate has become hotter since Boris Johnson became Prime Minister. The October 31st deadline is fast approaching and, no matter which side of the debate you are on, the uncertainty and confusion for businesses and individuals continues.

When March 2019 was the deadline, the government sent information to vets regarding the possible effects of a “No-deal Brexit” on the movement of pets across Europe. So, if you have a pet passport, or are planning to get one, the following information is still important for you. The simplest possible outcome that the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) can negotiate with the European Union is that there will be no change in the current legislation surrounding pet passports. Your pet dog, cat or ferret will need to be microchipped before it can be given a rabies vaccine and issued with a Pet Passport. It will be twenty-one days before you can travel across Europe. On returning to Britain, dogs will need a tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours on entering the UK. A second possible outcome is that the above regulations will apply, but within ten days of travel an official veterinarian will need to issue a health certificate in addition to the Pet Passport. A health certificate will be required every time you wish to travel to Europe with your

54

D I S C O V E R I N G

T H E

pet and, on arrival in the EU, you will need to report to a Travellers’ Point of Entry.

The most complicated possible outcome will be to return almost to the pre-passport days. In this case, a rabies injection is given after microchipping, but a blood test is required thirty days later to ensure that the rabies vaccination has taken full effect. There will be a three month wait from the date of blood testing before travel is allowed, so a minimum of four months of planning is required. If the blood test comes back showing the vaccine has not had the required effect, the whole process will need to be repeated. An official veterinarian would again need to issue a health certificate for every journey abroad, when all the requirements have been met. As the decision on a Brexit deal or no-deal will be on October 31st, 2019, if you are planning to travel with your pet to Europe after this date you need to start considering the above information now and making decisions on your travel plans. You may decide that the most complicated outcome is likely and will need to have a blood test for your pet as soon as possible, or you may decide that the first option will happen, and you need do nothing. Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer and there won’t be one until the October deadline. Therefore, let’s hope for the easiest solution, but prepare for the most complicated one!
