Introduction
Welcome to Your February Issue. A very warm welcome (unlike the weather!) to our February issue. It’s at times like this that it really hits me just how quickly time is flying – was it really four years ago that we were reminding our ladies that this is a “Leap Year” and yes, you can traditionally, this year on February 29th, get down on one knee and propose to your loved one? (Get ready fellas!!!) What’s more, this month we’ve got Valentine’s Day on February 14th where we can all stoke those romantic fires, so let’s ignore all the rain and gales out there and cosy up inside and enjoy this month’s collection of features, advertisements and ideas brought together for you by our wonderful team.
Claire x
So, farewell “Dry January”, and that alcohol de-tox wasn’t too bad after all, was it? I personally steered clear of “Vegan-uary” but it’s remarkable just how popular the rise in veganism has become, with so many students, several of them acquaintances of two of our own vegan sons, making the change to a healthier lifestyle, (and then having more money for the more important items in a student’s life, some of which involve bottles and glasses!) Valentine’s Day is featured in this month’s issue at some length, with all sorts of opportunities to make amorous advances, whether that involves a romantic candle-lit meal in one of our numerous eating venues in the local area or some beautiful flowers from our superb, independent florists. And talking of love … I’m overjoyed to announce the arrival of Nancy Rose, our first grandchild, on January 16th – let the spoiling begin! By the way, Why do Norwegian and Swedish naval vessels all have a bar code on their sides? It’s there to “scan de navy in!” Why is it so difficult to teach a dog to dance? They’ve got two left feet. Enjoy the read.

Deep-in Aesthetics: New Year and a Fresh New Outlook Latest news from Deep-in Aesthetics’ Julie Higgins: professional manner in helping patients that came to him at that time and the clinical knowledge he used to ensure the quality of their care has been transferred to this field and sets him apart from many others in this industry.
“We have received many fivestar reviews from our clients who have remarked on our professionalism, service and friendly manner. We pride ourselves on engaging with our clients and establishing their personal requirements, but, unfortunately, we have also found that some of our clients have come to us after having a negative experience with “so called” professionals in this field. Of the 979 complaints which “Save Face”, (the organisation offering independent information about nonsurgical cosmetic treatments) received last year, 83% were for treatments carried out by beauticians, hairdressers and laypeople, and 72% related to dermal fillers. Eleven people were rushed to hospital due to complications, while over half of the complainants paid to have their botched jobs corrected.

The author, Brian Holdich, gives his own personal account in his recently published book, “My National Service (1955 - 1957)”, when he writes about the trials and tribulations of army life. It gives a detailed description of being an infantry soldier in the Essex Regiment, when he travelled over 28,000 miles in three troop carrier ships and visited eight countries in all, and where he was to serve the majority of his National Service in Hong Kong. He believes that being a National Service soldier was the making of him. Any monies raised from the sale of the book will go to charities. It is being sold at the Deepings Library and The Community Centre, Market Deeping, price £8, or telephone 01778 344214 for a copy.

“Are You Sweet Enough?” asks Claire Gray, owner of Renu
I
f you could feel more energised, sleep better and love yourself a little more would that be more important than losing an inch on your waist or a few pounds from the scales? So often, we set our fitness goals on size and weight when what we are really striving for is simply feeling great. Modern society has left us associating this with size, and whilst I am a complete advocate of all the health benefits of correct posture, a balanced diet and regular exercise, these can all be achieved without the added stress of what size label is in your jeans. In fact, when you find the balance of eating well, taking enough rest, exercising sensibly and standing tall, the rest often follows naturally. There are so many reasons you may not be achieving your goals; these can be hormonal, dietary, posture and exercise-related. We need to listen to our bodies, be detectives about their individual needs, and make adjustments accordingly. One of the main culprits is sugar. It directly affects your moods, cravings,
weight control, sleep patterns and energy levels. We are able to get more than enough natural sugars through a balanced diet; in fact, we do not need any refined sugars at all. So, before you pop the next chocolate or biscuit in, or you pour a large glass of wine, here is some information on why you are sweet enough.
chemicals in that have an adverse effect on your health. Filling up on high protein, low fat foods such as fish, chicken and pulses with lots of colourful vegetables will help to stabilise your cravings and manage your energy levels and sleep patterns. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water every day too!
Sugar is one of the most ageing substances you can consume, causing glycation where sugar and protein molecules combine to form a tangled mess of tissue, leading to premature ageing of the skin. With sixteen calories in every teaspoon, it is directly related to weight gain, diabetes, heart disease and chronic fatigue and, if you are menopausal, it is a disaster area when it comes to hot flushes.
The meaning of renew is “to return to former self” and our objective is to help you find that centre, whether it is from an exercise class, a gym session, a treatment or our member education. February is “Valentine’s month” and is associated with thinking of those you love. Here at Renu, we truly believe you are sweet enough just the way you are. Our salon and fitness centre is a place where you can relax the mind, tone your body and lift your spirits, and our philosophy is to help you feel more energised and healthy. It really doesn’t matter if that is through a treatment or a workout. You choose.
Of course, sugar is also addictive, so you need to train your palate to accept less sugary foods and look for the hidden sugars in things such as drinks (including wine) and pre-packaged foods. Try to avoid replacing sugar with artificial sweeteners. Although they are low in calories, they have

Valentine’s Day – February 14th
- What’s that all about then? Take a brief romantic stroll through the centuries, up to today’s commercial orgy of flowers, jewellery and chocolates. ❤ In Ancient Rome, February 13th, 14th and 15th were celebrated as “Lupercalia”, a pagan fertility festival, seen as a basis for a celebration of love on this date. ❤ AD 289 - A Christian, Valentine of Rome, is martyred under Emperor Claudius. While in jail, this priest is said to have converted his jailer by healing his blind daughter’s sight. He is later said to have fallen in love with the daughter, sending her a note saying “From your Valentine”, but this is apocryphal. ❤ AD 496 - Pope Gelasius declared February 14th to be “St Valentine’s Day”, a Christian feast day to match the still-popular pagan festival of Lupercalia. ❤ AD 1382 - Geoffrey Chaucer writes his Parlement of Foules (or “Parliament of Fowls”), which is widely taken to be the first linking of St Valentine’s Day to romantic love. Celebrating the engagement of Richard II of England and Anne of Bohemia, he wrote: “For this was on St. Valentine’s Day/ When every fowl cometh there to choose his mate”.
❤ AD 1601 - St Valentine’s Day has entered the popular consciousness to the extent that Shakespeare mentions it in Ophelia’s lament in “Hamlet”: “To-morrow is Saint Valentine’s day,/All in the morning betime,/And I a maid at your window,/ To be your Valentine.” ❤ Mid-18th century - The passing of love-notes becomes popular in England, a precursor to the St Valentine’s Day card as we know it today. Early ones are made of lace and paper. ❤ 1797 – “The Young Man’s Valentine Writer” is published, suggesting appropriate rhymes and messages, and, as postal services became more affordable, the anonymous St Valentine’s Day card became possible. By the early 19th century, they become so popular that factories start to massproduce them. ❤ Mid-1980s - The commercialisation continues: noting the sales effect on chocolate, flowers and cards, the diamond industry gets involved, promoting St Valentine’s Day as a time for giving jewellery and so the “tradition” takes off. ❤ AD 2020 - An estimated 1 billion St Valentine’s Day cards will be sent worldwide this year, making it the second most card-heavy celebration, after Christmas.

From Thought to Fruition - What Sets Empire Apart? You want to achieve something. As with all achievements, there is a beginning. There is a thought, an idea, a vision, the genesis of the act or action you are about to embark upon. A decision. Then there is the question of how. ‘How can I achieve that?’ This is followed by a decision-making process in terms of your plan, or your vehicle in getting to your destination. ‘Which, what, who will I choose and why?’ Then, there is the action. The do! The part that is incumbent on you. And, if every step of this process is taken wisely, the action, the doing, will be accompanied by help. By things or by people who believe in your idea, your goal. Believers, coaches, supporters, providers of frameworks and facilitators, people with talent. Positive, people or mechanisms that see and harness your potential to realise your goal. So, of course let’s bring this into focus in a fitness context. In fact, let’s being it into sharper focus in terms of a local fitness context.
Number one!... People need to surround themselves with others who have positive aspirational thoughts and ideas. People who don’t apologise for wanting to do more, to be more, to achieve more and who see the value in every action a person takes to better themselves, however small and incremental those actions may be. The personalities that people surround themselves with should be like a bed of rich fertile soil in which your goals are planted, nourished and encouraged to grow and blossom.
The Deepings is very fortunate in that its people have a choice when it comes to choosing who, how and where they want to exercise. There are at least three businesses, of which Empire is one, who provide facilities for local people to exercise. Indeed, one of the reasons Empire is what it is, is because of the high quality of competition it has. We have and always will absolutely respect our ‘competitors’ and we recognise in fact that we share many of the same passions. But each business decides how it makes itself different from another. Each decides how the very mission and personality of its being brings the most value and benefit to its customers.
Then there is recognising where you have gaps in knowledge and where that knowledge is. So, if you want to work smartly and employ your hard work in the most efficient and effective way possible, who has the knowledge and experience to keep you on the right course? Knowledge isn’t all about ‘exercise expertise’ either. Knowledge of how to engage with, motivate and inspire different types of personalities is arguably even more important. Knowledge of how to make someone feel valued, a compliment in the right direction, an ability to read when someone is feeling down. A talent in making someone feel ten feet tall on their lowest of days. Make sure you are ‘coached’ and supported by people with such talent. You deserve that!
At Empire, we have always been passionate about wanting to set people free. This might seem a grand idea. It might seem an overly poetic statement, but I believe in it. I believe in it completely and fervently. From my six years’ direct experience in the fitness ‘industry’ I have seen the journeys of thousands of people. Literally thousands. Some are long, some are fleeting, some are moving and inspirational, but all have one thing in common, the person has had an idea, and acted upon it. And I have huge respect for that. But what makes a person’s fitness aspirations last? It’s a massive question. I have a few answers for it too.
10
D I S C O V E R I N G
T H E

There needs to be a variation in the tools at your disposal to achieve your fitness aspirations, as we are all very different. It isn’t a ‘one solution fits all’ scenario! So, literally speaking, you need to have access to lots of different group fitness classes at varying times of day, in addition to qualified detailed gym induction and ongoing instruction; then, you need to be able to progress to personal training if you wish. Finally, you need to have the freedom to flourish and take ownership of your fitness, and this comes when people begin to build their own routines in
fe br u a r y 2 0 2 0
Health
a supportive, safe, professional gym environment. This is what I mean when I talk about setting people free.
have total and complete ownership of their fitness. They have grown wings.
At Empire I have seen so many people go through an evolution. Many begin by taking part in structured fitness classes. And how lucky Empire is to have the very best talent at its disposal with its instructors. People may begin with their favourite classes and feel comfort in the company of their friends and a familiar, trusted professional instructor who knows and inspires them.
It’s important to say also that this evolution isn’t linear. It doesn’t mean that training in the gym is better than a class, and it doesn’t mean a class is better than training in the gym. It doesn’t mean that personal training is the pinnacle for everyone. It means, as your knowledge grows, and you learn about your physique and your personality, you can choose to pick from your options to build a jigsaw that reflects the way you like to ‘get fit’ and progress. That’s what sets Empire apart.
Next, people begin to look at the varied class timetable and decide to try something different. Something new. People may go from a Bodypump class to try their first ever indoor cycling class, or they may decide to experience the feel of higher intensity training in a Metafit class or high intensity circuit training on the gym floor. Then there is the moment when people who had been subject to the stereotypes about what gyms are like realise that the gym itself is an exciting opportunity. A playground. A place where everything they have seen, done and learned can be played out in their own time, at their own pace, in their own way, by their own design. I love this moment, when people realise that they are capable, knowledgeable, expert in their own right and that, at Empire they have the fertile soil of support in the form of the right people, the availability of choice, and the professionalism of the environment that means that they
f e brua ry 2020
We have the classes. We have the gym. We have the talent and the experience. We have the knowledge. And we have the facilities that make it all possible. Over 1,200 bookable class spaces every month. A gym that is open and professionally staffed for eighty-four hours a week. And I’ll leave you with this wonderful email I received this week from Empire member, Phil Cross, who is sixty-eight years old. As a perfect example of someone using the Empire environment to their advantage, Phil is in the gym every weekday! Phil wrote… “I have a condition called primary lymphoedema. The lymph fluid in my left arm does not circulate properly and causes my arm to be permanently swollen, and there is no cure. I was diagnosed in the late ’70s. In the early ’90s I was referred to a specialist at the Royal Marsden

Hospital, London. There, I was prescribed my treatment, which consisted of a compression sleeve and antibiotics to prevent infections. I will wear the sleeve for the rest of my life. Until 2016 I attended a Lymphoedema Clinic once a year where my arm was measured to make sure that the compression sleeve was of the right size. My arm stabilised. For a period of time, there was no deterioration or improvement so in 2016 I was discharged but told that if there was any change, I would be referred back to the clinic. In December 2016 I retired, and in September 2017 I joined Empire Gym, mainly because I was concerned that muscle loss accelerates after the age of sixty and that I wished to be fit and active during my retirement. Matt gave me a routine of resistance and cardio exercises which I still follow. After a few months I noticed that the swelling in my arm appeared to lessen and to be softer.
I then asked Dave to give me some specific exercises to strengthen the muscles in my arms, as lymph fluid is circulated by the muscles. This definitely helped and in late 2019 I asked for a referral back to the clinic. When I attended the clinic, the nurse was very pleased that the swelling had gone down by two centimetres, the first improvement since staring my treatment. I have now been prescribed a tighter compression sleeve which will be reviewed in six months’ time when hopefully an even tighter sleeve will be prescribed. This will hopefully reduce incidences of infections and lessen the swelling. I will continue with my gym sessions which have improved my fitness levels. I also enjoy going to Empire - it is a friendly, sociable, clean and encouraging place to be. Phil. Much love as always,
Matt x

My Solution Focused Story and Working with Children with Additional Needs and Challenging Behaviour
by Nicole Woodcock, Hummingbird Hypnotherapy
I am often asked how I became a solution focused hypnotherapist. Whenever I share my story, it always makes me giggle. I was fortunate to have an amazing birth with my youngest daughter using the ‘self-hypnosis for childbirth’ approach. A good friend and now colleague of mine Gary Johannes helped me build the confidence to have a home birth and faith in my body to deliver at home. Being forty minutes away from the nearest hospital in rural Lincolnshire, I knew deep down we wouldn’t be going anywhere near one after having such a traumatic time with my first child. Safe to say my daughter was delivered by her dad in our lounge with the help of the 999-operator talking him through the process; I, on the other hand, cool as a cucumber and enjoying my birth experience, knowing we were doing this together. Our daughter arrived in her amniotic sac at the same time as the paramedics walked through the door. The midwife arrived fifty minutes later and could not believe we had achieved such a wonderful birth. There begins the story - four months later, I was on the CPHT Peterborough course, adding a qualification to my CV! Qualifying in June 2016 with my practice Hummingbird Hypnotherapy. 14
D I S C O V E R I N G
Unbelievable. Did not see that coming at all. My background has always been working with people, in particular: elderly, mentally ill, and those with additional needs and challenging behaviour. Previously, I had spent eleven years working for the local authority, for children with additional needs, sensory processing, autism and behavioural issues. To put it into context, every day was different; many days involved confrontation, increased anxiety, ‘kick offs’ and waiting to get hurt. Not your average job but, at the time, I loved it. Fast forward three years after qualifying and I am now working with children with complex needs,

autism, behavioural issues, challenging behaviours, anxiety and more. The difference? The way I work now is non-confrontational in a fun, neutral space where all that’s been good goes. If only I had been allowed to bring this practice into my workplace, not just for the children but the staff too! I took a leap of faith when I began to work with children with additional needs; I hoped that this process would have a profound impact; the reality is it changes lives, not just of the child, but the family too. I have been so privileged to work with some children who, over the course of their fourteen years have been given fourteen different fe br u a r y 2 0 2 0

diagnoses and labels. Eight sessions later, and she is a confident artist who has just set up her own online business selling her fantastic artwork. She has chosen too to be home-schooled and after only leaving the house with the company of her mum, now walks her dog for two hours a day, on her own, and managed to attend a concert in London without a panic attack. Just WOW! A little boy who does not stop and enjoys most of his sessions playing with tangle toys, squishy, and sticking his head in the massage face hole in my couch (lol), who managed to transition to a new school without increased anxiety and behaviour. He kindly threw me a curve ball, not wanting to attend a session in my room and preferring to be outside. Nothing beats asking, “What’s been good?” sat in the sunshine on a bench. Reducing anxiety with children with additional needs, by using the solution focused approach, is at times mindblowing. Working out that classroom layouts cause such profound anxiety in some children, meaning that their
opportunity of learning goes out of the window. Getting them to imagine and choose where they would sit has been a fantastic solution with amazing outcomes. After his mum spoke to the teacher about our sessions, she agreed to trial it for a week. He paid more attention, his class scores increased, and he stopped taking home all the work he couldn’t do in class, as he had completed it all in the day. Part of the work involves my environment and fun. I talk about being a positive pineapple, no drama llama, having a box of emojis stickers and a crate of sensory toys to help with self-regulation and relaxation. Colour boxes, ceiling lights and a comfy couch with a llama blanket just add to a session. Who said therapy had to look boring? If you are looking for additional help for your child, please get in touch.

Ready for a New Way to Travel? How About Shaws of Maxey? Would you like to try something new in 2020 - and maybe visit some new destinations? Perhaps it’s time to consider travelling by coach! When was the last time that you stepped on board? Gone are the days of a bumpy ride to the same old destinations and a singalong on the way home. Today’s passengers expect luxury and that’s what they get. Modern coaches cost around £250,000 and, once you step on board, you’ll soon see why. On these touring coaches, you’ll find more legroom than on most planes or trains, a well-stocked refreshment station, a toilet for your convenience, reclining seats, air suspension … the list goes on. And we’ve not even mentioned the scenic views from the panoramic windows! With almost one hundred years of experience behind us, you can rest assured that we know the best routes to get you to your destination, as quickly and as safely as possible, and where to find the most spectacular scenery along the way.
“Everything was so well organised and put together.”

We offer over thirty-five convenient pick-up points for our day trips, and for our coach holidays, we’ll actually collect you from your door! You don’t have to worry about carrying your luggage, airport parking, sat-nav, security queues or online check-in. Travelling with us could not be easier … book, pick-up, enjoy, repeat! But where will you go? Well don’t worry, we’ve got some great suggestions. How many of the UK’s beautiful islands have you visited? With stunning coastlines and lots of wildlife, you don’t have to travel far to experience the tranquillity of island life. Take the Scilly Isles, described as “jewels of white sand in a crystal sea” or the Isle of Arran, described as “Scotland in Miniature”, thanks to its ever-changing coastline and dramatic mountain peaks. You’ll feel like you’re a million miles away and yet, travelling there by coach has been a breeze! Closer to home, and from as little as £10pp, you can spend the day in Nottingham; have you ever explored

MEN UNITED IN SONG 2020: SUPPORTING PROSTATE CANCER UK Looking for a fresh challenge, new skills and a great social scene to boot? Then look no further… Following its phenomenal success over the last few years, Men United in Song is back for 2020, once again raising money for Prostate Cancer UK. Launching in February, the project will sign up forty local men with a range of previous singing experience (including none), to rehearse over ten weeks for a charity concert at the Cresset Theatre on Saturday May 9th. To date, the project has engaged hundreds of local men, raising many thousands of pounds for the charity. “The whole experience was extremely rewarding and exciting,” says Stuart from Bourne. “You get to see what your voice is really capable of and to share a few pints with a great bunch of guys from all walks of life, who you might not normally meet. The sense of achievement when you finally get to perform in front of an audience in the concert is amazing. I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.” “While I’d sung karaoke before, I knew that this would be very different!” says James from Market Deeping. “I learned so much in just a few weeks and made some really great friendships too. A fantastic experience, thoroughly recommended!”
Patrick, from Peterborough, says, “Doing something good for a fantastic charity while also learning to sing some really great pieces of music was a brilliant experience! Don’t hesitate, sign up today!” Men United in Song is not all about the singing or even just about the fundraising; there’s a fantastic social scene too! Ultimately, it’s about a group of men getting together in a shared enterprise, which of course is the idea behind Prostate Cancer UK’s Men United campaign. Men United in Song kicks off with introduction sessions on February 27th (6pm – 10pm) and 29th (2pm – 6pm) at the John Mansfield Campus in Peterborough, (PE14HX). Absolutely no previous experience is required to join, just a willingness to get involved and give it your best shot! For further information, contact Jo on 01733 425194 or e-mail menunited@peterboroughsings.org.uk.
Loss and Loneliness – Oddfellows Can Help The following letter reached us recently. It comes from Andrew Spencer, Social Co-ordinator of the Nene and Welland Oddfellows, based in Market Deeping. “Through a recent survey, we sadly discovered that it’s not uncommon for people who’ve lost a partner to also lose contact with friends. At a time when friends are needed most, people are left feeling even more isolated. Over 40% of people questioned felt that others didn’t know what to say, while another third felt isolated after their loss. Losing someone close is unfortunately something we’re all likely to experience, and it can often feel that we’re alone in our grief. Having friends around you helps make it all a little more bearable. 18

As a local friendship group, we’d like to extend a warm welcome to anybody who may be looking to meet with other friendly people locally. A Sparkling Time: St. Pancras by Searcys
“L
et’s meet at the Champagne Bar, St. Pancras”, no doubt says a certain ‘something’. The magnificent London St. Pancras International is where Eurostar trains arrive and depart, plus services to/from elsewhere, including the Midlands and South East England. Thameslink services and underground trains are fast and frequent too, and the shops at St Pancras International have high street names and designer outlets. Searcys Champagne Bar with its heated leather seating and ‘press for champagne’ buttons, has 98 metres of serving space and is reputed to be Europe’s longest. Their adjacent Brasserie is very popular, both with people travelling and also as a ‘destination’ dining venue. High-quality wines, from the extensive drinks menu, pair extremely well with the different dishes of cuisine. Regular events happen throughout the year. In addition to the Champagne School, other events can feature ‘Around the World in a Bubble’, plus specific vineyard tastings, to include a full three course dinner and, of course, ‘St Pancras by Searcys Champers And Chips’ is always very popular! Searcys is renowned for their grand, impressive range of different Champagnes. From well-known brands to lesser, small independent labels, Searcys Champagne choices have something for all tastes and palates. Very knowledgeable, expert sommeliers conduct Champagne Masterclasses. These memorable events are inspiring and hugely

popular with ‘sparkling’ lovers, from ‘learners’ to ‘connoisseurs’. Whether Blanc de Noirs, Single Year Champagnes or other sparkling delectations are preferred, there is always something to learn about these wonderful productions. From breakfast, through luncheon and travelinspired afternoon tea, to dinner, plus pre-theatre and ‘express’ dining (if time is pressing), St Pancras by Searcys Brasserie and Champagne Bar also offers private dining. Parties and occasions can easily be arranged and accommodated. Gift vouchers are available – now there’s a thought! A very much recommended brasserie and Champagne bar, set within a most impressive, iconic venue. Your Garden
February Gardening Tips It’s hard to believe that February heralds the end of the winter months and welcomes the beginning of spring! As I write this, we are yet to see any harsh winter weather, apart from the copious amounts of rain we witnessed in December. However, February can bring some harsh, cold conditions, but also the odd spring-like days, and hopefully you will find some time to complete any winter digging and preparing the beds ready for planting in the following months. Remove any weeds that have managed to grow and add manure or homemade compost to the soil, if you haven’t already done so, and then cover in black plastic, cloches or polytunnels, which will help warm up the soil. If you intend to grow leafy brassicas, such as kale, cabbages, cauliflowers etc, add lime to the soil a few weeks prior to planting and allow the rain to wash it into the soil, then before planting add some fish, blood and bone, raking it into the topsoil. Regards planting, the dilemma is whether to sow and plant early or wait until the weather is warmer and more reliable. It might be best to do a bit of both so you might have some earlier harvested veg. You could plant out some broad beans or peas if the ground isn’t frozen, protecting them with cloches if the weather is very cold, and garlic and shallot sets should be planted out this month. A good idea for sowing peas is to use lengths of plastic guttering: half fill them with good quality seed compost and sow the seeds about two inches apart, cover with compost, water and keep in a light spot under cover. Seeds that can be planted indoors or under cover; broad beans, Brussels, leeks, onions, salad leaves, tomatoes, peas, spinach, summer cabbage, sprouting broccoli – to name but a few. It really is the last time you can winter prune fruit trees as they should still be dormant, any later and if it is mild, they will be starting to move into growth. As they are still dormant bare-rooted fruit trees can still be planted and autumn fruiting raspberries pruned What could be tastier than a rhubarb crumble made with fresh pink rhubarb? If your rhubarb crowns show signs of activity, now is an excellent time to force an early sweet harvest by covering with a big bucket. All of your seed potatoes for the year should have been purchased by the end of this month and spread out in egg boxes or seed trays for “chitting” in a cool light room, it is recommended to remove all but three of the “chits” as it is believed that this produces larger potatoes. Other jobs for February include: • Remove any dead leaves from spread mould and mildew. • Make sure winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons, whose food supply is a little short at this time of year. • Prune autumn raspberry canes by cutting right down to the ground barerooted fruit trees can still be planted but this will be your last opportunity • Feed and mulch fruit trees and bushes • Winter prune currants, blackberries, hybrid berries, gooseberries • The compost heap might benefit from a bit of attention. Rake it through with a fork to aerate it, add water if it seems dry and then recover it to keep it warm.
Happy gardening!

Protecting Your Disabled Child by Nick Ash, Managing Director
Parenting children is difficult. Living with a disabled child in the family only serves to magnify the challenges, whilst parents seem to face difficult questions all the time. Often, there is only time to deal with the day-to-day, with little time left for planning for the future. I urge you to consider three important questions to ensure your child is safe when you are no longer there for them.
1
What will happen to my child when I die? The sad truth is that a disabled child is more likely to be taken into local authority care if their parent dies. You need to know that you have appointed the right person to look after your child, with the least disruption to their life and their care. A valid will allows you to appoint guardians for your children and minimise any local authority interference. You need to have it in place.
2
Will an inheritance my child receives affect their care plan? Any inheritance received by a disabled person has the potential to disrupt a care plan. This can include inheritances from grandparents or other relatives who are trying to do the right thing. The loss of a care
package is de-stabilising and there is no guarantee that it will be reinstated when the money runs out. The answer lies in a structure that allows the disabled person to benefit from the inheritance without affecting their care package. We are happy to help with putting in place the right structure for you and your children.
3
What happens when my child turns eighteen? Parental responsibility ends when a child turns eighteen. This leaves your disabled child reliant on social services and you can be left powerless when decisions are made about your child’s future. With the right planning, there are solutions that leave you in control, allowing you to make important decisions on their behalf. Call us for advice about your situation. In certain cases, it may be necessary to start making provision from the age of sixteen onwards. The worst thing you can do is nothing. An initial consultation is free and at the end of it you will know what the right plan is for you and your child, and exactly how much it is going to cost. You have nothing to lose by calling us today on 01778 382723. We want to help you answer your three questions.

Meet the Team: Jo Stark, Estate Planning Manager “I started my working life like many, not really knowing what direction I wanted to go in, and ended up working in the same industry for twenty years. Five years ago, everything changed when I was offered a job with Liberty Partnership in a completely different role. I had been in my previous job for twelve years, lacked self-belief and confidence, and struggled to make the decision to take the plunge but, with the encouragement from family and friends, I decided to give it a go. I haven’t looked back since! After only a short time, it became clear that I had found my dream job. I had finally found a job that I not only loved but seemed to be quite good at. Don’t Let Online Romancers Steal Your Heart - or Your Money! by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades WITH the most romantic day of the year just around the corner, Valentine’s Day is not just for those people who are already ‘coupled up’. An estimated seven million UK residents are registered on dating sites, and around one in three relationships in the UK now start online. However, while for many it may be romance and roses; for an increasing number of others it can spiral into heartbreak and financial misery. Romance fraud affects thousands of people; with women making up the majority of victims. According to Action Fraud, scammers swindled victims out of an average of £11,145 each during 2018. There are many local stories including one woman who lost everything, including her home (read the full story at the link below*). Fraudsters trick victims into sending money or gather enough personal information to steal their identities; resulting in an overall cost to victims of £50 million. The majority of accounts on dating websites are genuine people looking for romance, but fraudsters may try to contact you by making fake profiles, getting in touch and building what feels like a loving relationship. Once a fraudster using a fake dating profile is confident that they’ve won your trust, they will tell you about a problem they’re experiencing and ask you to help out by sending money. They may have arranged to visit you, but need money to pay for the flight or visa. They may tell you everything has been booked but their ticket has been stolen, and you need to send money quickly to get them on the next flight. Alternatively, they may prey on your sympathies, telling you a family member or someone else they are responsible for is ill and they need money for medical treatment. Once you send them money, the fraudsters will keep coming back and invent new reasons to send them more. There are a few simple steps to keep yourself, and your loved ones, safe from fraudsters who often target the vulnerable, the lonely or recently widowed or divorced. D - Don’t rush into an online relationship. Get to know the person, not the profile, ensuring you ask plenty of questions. A - Analyse their profile. Protect yourself by confirming their identity. Check the person is genuine by putting the following into your search engine: their name, profile picture (by simply using a reverse image search) and any repeatedly used phrases, along with the term ‘dating scam’. T - Talk to your friends and family. Be wary of anyone who tells you not to tell others about them. E - Evade scams. Never send money or share your bank details with someone you’ve only met online. S - Stay on the dating site messenger service. Fraudsters will often encourage their victims to use different communications channels that are often undetectable. * Read Carol’s story at https://cambridgeshireinsight.org. uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Carols-story.pdf fe br u a r y 2 0 2 0

Advice
Dealing with Debt from Citizens Advice Don’t be frightened to start tackling debt problems. Getting to grips with debts starts with working out which to deal with first. Debts can be placed into two categories: priority and non-priority debt. Priority debts are those which may cause particularly serious consequences if they aren’t dealt with, including the ultimate one of losing the home.
The important thing is not to worry when all the debts can be seen written down together - the important thing is to start to sort them out. In the Deepings, the Citizens Advice Service includes a drop-in fifteen-minute assessment at the New Community Centre, Market Deeping on Wednesday mornings, before an afternoon appointment, if needed, or a referral to Deeping St James fortnightly on Thursdays, where the United Churches have funded an outreach at the Institute, on 38 Church Street.
Examples of priority debts include: rent arrears; mortgage and secured loan arrears; council tax arrears; gas or electricity bills; phone or internet bills (if they are the current supplier); TV licence payments; Magistrate court fines; unpaid income tax; VAT (if business debt). Finally, unpaid child support payments are also classified as priority debts. Once priority debts are under control, people can move on to look at other, “non -priority” debts. They might include: credit card or store card debts; catalogue debts; unsecured loans including payday loans; unpaid water bills (the supplier can’t cut off the water supply); overpayments of benefits (apart from tax credits); unpaid parking tickets; and money owed to family and friends. If these debts aren’t paid, people can be taken to court by their creditors. When beginning to organise what is owed, it is important to get together all the information about each debt, such as contracts, bills and statements, then make a list, including details: Who is owed the money? - this is the ‘creditor’; When was the first payment missed and how much is owed? - this might be in a recent statement; The account or reference number - this might be at the top of the statement; What has the creditor done to get the money back, for example, sending letters or threatening court action?

Gorka has continuously displayed outstanding talent and charisma in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 series. His debut saw him paired with EastEnders star, Tameka Empson. In 2018 he was partnered with TV star, Katie Piper, after having waltzed Alexandra Burke to the final the previous year, and 2019 saw him partner real-life partner Gemma Atkinson on the Christmas Day special. Tickets are available from firedancelive.co.uk but here at Discovering Magazines, we are giving away a pair of tickets for your choice of either the Peterborough or Cambridge show! All you need to do to enter is answer this question: Who is the real life partner of Gorka Marquez? Inspired Martial Arts - “Inspiring Your Child Through Words and Actions” Inspired Martial Arts was established by Jamie Johannes in 2011 and there are now numerous classes over many locations, one of which is at Coronation Hall, Halfleet, Market Deeping. These sport karate classes are open to all students between the ages of three and sixteen years, who can be of all abilities and standards. The principles of self-defence are taught, but not to use the new skills in any way that could cause harm to others. The sessions are fun but disciplined, where the students learn new skills, gain confidence and pride, as they work their way to becoming a black belt. In the words of Jamie Johannes, now Senior Head Instructor, “My team and I are here to encourage and inspire our students to work towards the five culture points - confidence, respect, discipline, focus and success. The benefits of participating in Martial Arts are that your child’s self-confidence will improve and their attention span can increase. We will instil in them a culture of achievement and worth. We teach respect and discipline within a safe environment. The child will learn valuable skills, which will stay with them throughout their life.
Our classes provide health, fitness, social interaction and fun. The style we teach is sports karate and offers workouts for children of all ages and abilities.” For more information, including the schedule of classes and details and prices of gradings, please visit www. inspiredmartialarts.co.uk.

Welcome to Caverstede Nursery School Located in Walton, Peterborough, Caverstede has been a nursery school within the community since 1946. We have evolved over the years to become the Outstanding Nursery School that we are today, welcoming children and families from across the whole of Peterborough and outlying areas. Our highly qualified and experienced staff work in close partnership with families, outside agencies and transferring settings/schools, to ensure our provision is appropriate for every child. We value diversity as a rich resource to support the learning for all. Within the school, there are three classes. Each is purpose-built, on one level and appropriate for the age of the children we teach. Our classrooms are carefully planned to enable us to fully implement the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and furnished in such a way as to ensure that children can learn independently - being able to choose their own resources.

Each class has their own woodland day experience one day a week and these continue to be thoroughly enjoyed. Opportunities are also available to develop forest skills – building fires and den building are just two activities out of many that are enjoyed!

- The latest exhibition at John Clare Cottage is the work of local artist Cilla Marseglia. Cilla has been interested in painting since she was very young, gaining an ‘O’ level in Art whilst at school; she is mainly self-taught and has been a member of CASA, the Castor and Ailsworth art group for several years. Cilla paints using various mediums and techniques in order to achieve the effect she is looking for. She works in layers applying textures and washes until she is happy with the depth of colour and tones. It is then that she adds the finer details. She is constantly experimenting and searching for new ways to improve and enhance her paintings. The John Clare Cottage is open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays, 11am-3pm. Lets With Pets The Housing Secretary, Robert Jenrick MP, recently announced changes to the model tenancy contract, that will hopefully mean there will be more pet-friendly rental homes available across the UK. Following this, Clare Kivlehan, (Head of Outreach Projects at Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity) sent this letter out to explain the situation: “As the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, Dogs Trust believes that the benefits of pet ownership shouldn’t be exclusive to homeowners, but open to private and social renters as well. With the number of people privately renting increasing year on year, the news that the Government is looking to make it easier for private tenants to have pets in their homes, has never been more important. Sadly, the single biggest reason we see dogs handed in to our rehoming centres is due to a change in the owner’s circumstances, such as being unable to live in a rented property with a pet. This can also stop people coming forward to adopt rescue animals. This needs to change and we sincerely hope the proposed updates
to model tenancy contracts will help ensure that fewer owners are forced to give up their beloved pets and that more people are able to consider adoption. For over a decade, Dogs Trust has been working with landlords, letting agencies and the property industry on this issue. It’s important that any updates to the model tenancy contract are backed up with appropriate guidance for landlords on how to put the changes into practice to make it fully effective and mutually beneficial for all parties involved. We welcome the opportunity to work alongside other animal welfare organisations and the Government to ensure this forthcoming change positively impacts the property sector, and that more pet-friendly rental homes become available.” Dogs Trust has put together Good Practice Guidelines to help landlords and letting agencies rent properties successfully to pet owners. New Deepings Record for Tom at Scottish Swimming Championships A trio of Deepings Swimming Club youth swimmers travelled to Edinburgh recently, after qualifying for the Scottish National Short Course Championships. Taking place at the Royal Commonwealth Pool, this is a three-day event attracting some of the best swimmers from across the UK. Representing Deepings were Bethany Eagle-Brown, Holly Leggott and Tom Neal. Due to injury, Lorna McGill and Louis Metselaar were unfortunately forced to withdraw. Between them, Bethany, Holly and Tom raced in nineteen events, achieved four personal bests and set one new Deepings club record to finish 2019 in style. Tom led the way with three career best swims, breaking his own Deepings club record in the 100m backstroke event. Sixteen-year-old Bethany qualified for seven events to cap an excellent 2019 during which she also raced at the British Summer Championships for the first time. Holly competed in five events and was back to her best form for the season, close to her lifetime PBs.

with a property from Briggs Residential this Valentine’s month
Every town has a variety of styles of estate agent, from the soulless “corporate” agency driven by figures, to the one-man band; from arty-contemporary to pushy-salesy. Each type tends to appeal to a specific sector of the property-owning community, and rightly so – buyers and sellers alike need to feel comfortable working with an agent that reflects their own values. So perhaps it’s time we actually spelt out exactly the type of approach we strive to adopt. Certainly many have commented that our office design and website has a pleasant contemporary feel, but what does this actually say about the people behind the business, and how would this impact on you as buyer or seller? As an independent agency, we have the flexibility to adopt whatever approach we feel if of greatest benefit to our clients. Without the constraints of corporate standardisation, our values are more likely to be a reflection of our own aspirations.
If you were to analyse the approach we take to estate agency and business generally, you’d find us to be highly personable and empathetic to the needs of our clients, that we have time to listen with interest, and that we believe in providing straight-talking, good advice that is responsibly realistic rather than insincerely flattering. Ultimately, it comes down to transparency and integrity, which are the cornerstones of our business. When combined with the passion we also have for results, the balance is a unique and enjoyable service of which we are extremely proud. It follows that when we employ new staff, they also mirror our values and quickly share the same sense of pride. Indeed, our very low staff turnover rate is a reflection of a happy ship – something on which many of our clients have commented! Sometimes, when you feel the formula is right, it does no harm to shout about it a bit! Why not call us on Briggs Residential and see what all the fuss is about for yourself?
