Welcome to Your March Issue. A warm welcome to you all. Mother’s Day already it’s on March 22nd by the way! “Life doesn’t come with a manual - it comes with a mother” is an old saying which springs to mind. We all need help in finding our way through all the various ups and downs of life, and there, right from day one has been that wonderful (sometimes), smiling (often) and loving (always) lady we are proud to call “Mum”. This month, we include several “mum-related features” and also look towards Easter, fast approaching early next month. Let’s hope by then we’ll have turned the corner weather-wise, dried ourselves out and started thinking of those long, warm summer days to come. Finally, from all of us mums, thanks in advance for the flowers, chocolates, perfume and big hugs, as we try our hardest … without a manual!

Mother’s Day is always a wonderful opportunity to take the time out to thank your mother, (and don’t forget the mother-in-law either!) for giving you so much, right from the very beginning. This month’s issue contains many ideas to make that thank you even more special than ever, as our mums are placed centre-stage on March 22nd. That extra evening light, when the clocks go forward an hour on March 29th, will make us all feel that summer’s not too far away either. It’s always good to hear from our readers and thank you for the feedback. I’d like to put out a request for any ideas which you feel might improve the magazine even further. Please e-mail me any suggestions because, don’t forget, it’s your magazine. Budding photographers, in particular, might fancy sending us images to adorn our front covers in the months to come. It’s Time to Put a Spring in Your Step! asks Claire Gray, owner of Renu

s daylight hours increase and the spring flowers start to show their heads, it’s a great time to maximise on the season and put a little spring in your step.

Defined as “having a confident, energetic demeanour”, people with ‘spring’ tend to be cheerful with a buoyant attitude. Here are my five favourite ways to put some spring in your step:

results. Our thirty-minute workout routine is a great place to start and is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Spring Cleaning. Doing some cleaning puts spring into your home and a spring into your step! Just getting a corner of the house or office cleaned up can help you feel accomplished and refreshed. Open the windows and give your rooms a detox, even if it’s just for a few minutes a day.

Redecorate. You don’t have to do anything major. Maybe put some fresh flowers around the house or change a picture or two. Change the throw or cushions. Try something new!

Get plenty of sleep. Sleeping may seem like the opposite of what you are looking for, but energy and focus start with a good night’s sleep. Starting the day well-rested helps you feel inspired and motivated. If you struggle to sleep, try minimising high sugar foods, limiting television and electronic devices, at least an hour before you retire, and sleep in a dark room that is not too hot, (about 17 degrees). Aromatherapy oils can also assist you. Your skin regenerates at night and Decleor’s ‘Iris Lavandula’ night balm is designed to replenish your skin and assist a good night’s sleep.

Find Opportunities. Being on the lookout for opportunities to exercise, eat healthier and other little lifestyle pick-me-ups will definitely put a spring in your step. Always be aware of how you can make an event healthier or more interesting. Take the stairs, park a little further away and walk. If it’s raining, put on a raincoat and wellingtons and take a walk. Just approaching life this way can foster a more energetic outlook!

Regular Exercise. If you want to start slowly, that’s absolutely fine – it’s better to start slowly than not start at all! Make a commitment to exercise regularly, even if it’s just a couple of times a week. Again, something is better than nothing, and regularity is important if you want to see

We Can’t do ‘Virtual’ Exercise, so Why do Virtual Life? Let’s Ditch Social Media! ‘Social Media’ Exactly what is it? The term itself describes a ‘media’ or ‘platform’ upon which people can be sociable. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter. The most famous three of an increasing plethora of ‘platforms’ upon which people share their ‘life’ with friends, acquaintances and complete strangers. We watch, follow, share, consume, compare, contrast, worry and waste our time, more concerned about how what we are doing right now will translate to the ‘online social community’ later when we ‘upload’, share, expose and shout about what we are doing, what we’ve been doing and what we plan to do… every minute of every day of every week of every damn month! The irony is that we are never actually in the present. Never making the most of now. Never telling a true story to ourselves, in favour of telling a fanciful one to people who ultimately do not matter. Stories to strangers over investment in the reality of now, and those immediate treasured relationships that are your everything. When you take an adult, mature, considered step back and look at the whole time-consuming, new-fangled process of constantly ‘showing your feathers’ to the world, it seems absolutely and completely ridiculous. Totally fruitless and of no substance. The latest generations of human beings have been convinced that the world exists on another plane, another ‘platform’ and that their lives are destined, designed and dutifully directed to be intertwined with the lives and experiences of everyone else in the global digital network. Shallow globalisation of our daily lives instead of focus, family, friendship and feelings; Four F’s that put Facebook firmly in its place. You’ve guessed it, I’ve had enough of what most now see as progress. ‘The future’. And there are arguments that social platforms give exposure to some vehicles for good. And I totally agree that when, for example, funds are raised for good causes using social media platforms it is

hard to argue against it. But, that aside, I think society has taken a wrong turn. Progress in anything is never linear. It is never a straight line from one place to the next. Progress is about doing and learning and changing your mind, changing your direction. Recognising that what works doesn’t need to be fixed and valuing what is important. This premise though has been thrown out when it comes to conversations about the direction of humanity itself. If you are lost, you retrace your steps. If on the way to a destination you go the wrong way, you take directions and get back on track. If you deviate from a healthy diet and binge on chocolate, doughnuts and alcohol, you don’t just say... ‘Well this is the new way and it will always be so’, you recognise the blip, recalibrate, decide to do

Health For me, my parents have always been, and still are, both my solid family foundation and my role models. And they are not and have never been on social media. They are of a generation blessed enough to have been without the technology. And it seems to me that I have a responsibility to step away from any form of social media so that my son may come to me and his wonderful mum when his mind is full and he feels the pressures of life and that he can sit and talk with us in an oasis of real life. In an environment that feels secure and without prying eyes. A fortified castle of family, sense and sensibility that cannot be breached by the outside world.

what is healthy and make a change. So why can’t the social media ‘binge’ be ended??? There’s easily enough evidence to prove it is unhealthy. I would argue strongly that it’s time to prove you can put a genie firmly back in its bottle! It’s time to end the ‘noise’ that is challenging the health, both mentally and physically, of all of us who have been snared by it. Of course, we need to be aware of what is happening in the world and we must not be ignorant or insular. We need to have access to news, insight and new ideas, but we don’t need to be force-fed. We don’t need the constant distraction.

I want Empire Gym to stand for that too.

We all want to be responsible in a global context and we all want to be open-minded people who share the greater challenges of the world, but we cannot all save the world every day. Why don’t we start by focussing on our immediate relationships, our immediate experiences, our immediate actions and our immediate communities? By looking people in the eye. By re-igniting the art of conversation. By recognising the importance of nuance in real interaction. Literally, rebuilding our skills in recognising the strength of a smile or being able to notice someone’s troubles in their body language, and by reacting as a human being to offer a hand, a hug. Something real. A whole world exists in each of our minds, yet to share something properly; deeply and with meaning with one person who listens, face-to-face, is infinitely more powerful than any ‘global’ social media splurge.

Your health, your fitness, your goals are not for prying eyes. Your gym experience, your exercise explorations are not played out in a context of social media trends, ideas, fads, conjectures and theories. They are real. They belong to you and they can be played out in a genuine, secure, responsible environment. We can talk about your day. We can talk in colourful terms about our love for food and fine wine, and we can wax about how fitness fits with enjoying a full life. Furthermore, when you are here, it’s time to do. It’s time to feel. It’s time to experience the positive physical effects of exercise, to hear the music, and to talk to like-minded people, while in a real and local context, you are striving for subtly different specific goals in a collectively positive, supportive atmosphere. So, Empire Gym will be phasing out its social media presence. As will I, personally.

You can read about exercise but can’t manifest its benefits until you actually move your body. We all ought to take this idea into our daily actions. Don’t read about others’ daily lives, but rather live your own. Don’t postulate about the challenges of the world, rather live and act so that they may not exist. This all feeds into the ethos of Empire Gym and means a lot to me as a parent. To watch the edited lives of others through social media screens serves no purpose, providing you have a foundation, security and confidence in yourself that is born of strong family, strong friendships and relatable, contactable, tangible role models.

Alongside running my own practice, Hummingbird Hypnotherapy, I also organise and facilitate the annual Bourne Well Being Event. This year’s event is on Saturday March 28th, from 10am to 4 pm, at Wake House, North Street, Bourne. This will be the sixth event of its kind and we have raised over £3,500 collectively for five local charities who have needed support. They include Dementia Support South Lincs, The Carers Sitter Service, Little Miracles Bourne, The Comfort Mummy Foundation and The Bourne Arts and Community Trust. This year, all monies raised will go to The Butterfield Centre in Bourne. The sole purpose of these events is to allow people to come and try something new, find a new activity to join, or just enjoy a day out with friends and getting some

pampering! The whole emphasis of what I do in practice is incorporated into the event - aiming to provide positive action by people attending; positive interaction by being around others; trying something new with positive thoughts; looking forward to the event; or enjoying the day so much you can sit and reflect positively on it. It also allows us to bring a community of people together who want to support one another, especially to promote positive mental and physical health. So, what can you expect to find at our child-friendly Bourne Well Being Event? Therapists, mini massage, handmade jewellery, vegan

skincare, art, crafts, interactive workshops, movement, nutrition advice, tarot readings, crystal healing, reiki, numerology, kinesiology, hypnotherapy and music … not to mention a vast amount of home-made cake, including vegan and glutenfree! Celebrate 2020’s Anniversaries in Style & Comfort with Shaws of Maxey There’s lots to celebrate in 2020 so we’ve picked out some of this year’s most interesting anniversaries and given you the opportunity to go along and experience a little bit of it for yourselves! The UK is blessed with a wealth of history and we’re fortunate to have Europe’s largest conservation charity, The National Trust, to help us preserve it. 2020 sees the trust celebrating 125 impressive years, now caring for and protecting over 780 miles of spectacular coastline, more than 250,000 hectares of beautiful countryside, over 500 historic buildings and ancient gardens and nearly one million works of art! The founders’ original values are still at the heart of the Trust - protecting nature, beauty and history, for everyone, for ever. Fast forward to 1950 and you’ll find that it’s seventy years since the first official Formula 1 Grand Prix which took place at Britain’s very own Silverstone. The average age of the field was thirty-nine and included a Swiss baron, a Thai prince and a Jazz musician! Since then F1 has gone on to have thirty-three world champions, 108 winners and 764 different drivers! It’s also seventy years since the von Trapp family began a tour of Britain with a performance at The Royal Albert Hall. The family performed in more than 2,000 shows across the US and Europe, singing in over 12 different languages and going on to become the inspiration for Hollywood’s The Sound of Music. Finally, in 2020 we honour the eightieth anniversary of the Battle of Britain; The London Blitz; the first flight of the de Havilland Mosquito combat plane; and Churchill’s ‘Finest Hour’ speech. Let’s not forget, too, that it’s seventy-five years since the end of World War Two as “Victory in Europe” was realised. In two years’ time, we’ll be celebrating an anniversary of our own as our family-owned and managed company enters its centenary year! Five Deepings Swimmers Compete at County Championships The Lincolnshire County Swimming Championships got underway in late January with the long-distance events in Grantham. Five Deepings Swimming Club swimmers qualified – three in the 800m freestyle and two in the 1500m freestyle – and all swam personal or season-bests. Eleven-year-old Jacob Briers produced a seventeensecond PB in his 800m race, finishing fourth in the 12yrs age group. Emma Wilde, meanwhile, swam a season-best in the 800m freestyle, beating the time she set two months ago by five seconds to finish seventh in the 16/over age group. Completing dayone was Harry Cardell, whose seven-second PB took him to sixth place in the boys 16/over 800m race. In the 1500m races the next day, Lilly Tappern smashed her personal best by more than a minute, touching home sixth in the 13yrs age group, whilst Molly Briers completed the weekend’s racing, with a one-second PB, to finish 13th in the 14yrs age group.

The Deepings trio who competed in the 800m at the County Championships: Harry Cardell, Emma Wilde and Jacob Briers. The County Championships take place over three weekends, in Grantham and Louth, with twenty-nine Deepings swimmers qualifying.

Free Diabetes Check Deepings Lions are offering a free diabetes check in association with qualified health professionals from Silver Star on Saturday March 21st, between 10.00 am and 4.00 pm. No booking is needed and the walk-in unit, where the check will be done, will be parked in Tesco Car Park, Godsey Lane in Market Deeping. Silver Star will carry out a simple blood test, analyse the results and say whether a visit to the GP is advisable for further investigation. Unfortunately, diabetes is on the increase. Currently, according to The Charity Diabetes UK, 4.7 million people have the condition and this number is expected to reach 5.5 million by 2030. Diabetes is a serious condition, causing glucose (sugar) to be too high in the blood. Glucose is obtained from the breakdown of carbohydrates from food and drink and is needed to provide the energy for our bodies. The hormone insulin, which is produced in the pancreas, regulates the amount of glucose in our blood. If you don’t have diabetes, the pancreas detects when glucose has entered the bloodstream and releases the right amount of insulin so the glucose can enter into your cells. If you have diabetes, this system does not work. 18

There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 where no insulin is produced by the body and Type 2, the most common type, where the insulin either can’t work effectively or is not produced in sufficient amounts. Today, it is estimated that in the UK there are almost 1 million people living with Type 2 undiagnosed diabetes. There are a number of risk factors associated with developing Type 2, the main one being overweight or obese. There are also several others which could contribute to someone’s risk including age, family history and ethnicity. Chris Askew, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK, said, “Millions of Type 2 diabetes cases could be prevented. The signs of Type 2 are not obvious and that’s why spotting them early can be lifechanging. Early diagnosis means that fewer people will experience diabetes-related complications such as sight loss, amputation, kidney failure, stroke and heart disease, because they could seek support to manage their condition effectively as soon as possible. m a r ch 2 0 2 0

n these modern times, there are so many different types of wines to choose from. Each to their own and, for a range of ‘something for all’, I chose the following: Domaine de Peyssonnie Muscat Sec (Grapes: Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains). From LanguedocRoussillon, France, this is a very popular, dry, white wine, that pleases many. Another often-selected white wine is Garille Viognier – Sauvignon Blanc (Grapes: Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier). Again, from the Languedoc-Roussillon region, this dry, white is also extremely popular. From the bouquet, on the nose, to the mouthfeel, this is a ‘pleaser’, for so many white wine lovers. If a rosé is preferred, then Var Les Richoises (Grapes: Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault) from Provence, France, does not disappoint. This dry, rosé wine has much appeal – and the price is right! For a red, my selection goes to Lirac Réserve des Capouliers (Grapes: Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvèdre). This production is from the Rhône and often chosen as a very good red wine, regularly adorning dining tables. A powerful wine, exuding a bouquet of ripe and juicy, red fruits, the mouthfeel continues the enjoyment, with a good ﬁnish on the palate.

For sparkling wine lovers, Bissinger Premium Champagne (Grapes: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Meunier) captures the mood perfectly, with the balance and perlage adding superbly to the occasion and enjoyment. Sweeter wines are always popular, and Jurançon (Grapes: Gros Manseng, Petit Menseng) from South West France is a regular choice, that pleases a great number of people and is to be found at numerous gatherings. A new fine dining and a la carte restaurant has opened in the Peterborough area. Homme Nouveau has opened its doors in the market town of Whittlesey where it offers a mouth-watering selection of superb cuisine. Chris Newman is the chef/owner of the new eaterie which opened to the public last November. The 35-year-old has a wealth of culinary experience having worked at some of the area’s most prestigious restaurants including The Bow Window at Ramsey, the Sibson Inn Hotel at Water Newton, The Cutter, Ely, and Peterborough’s Windmill and Bull Hotel, in various roles including that of head chef. He said: “I became interested in catering while I was doing my ‘A’ Levels at school in Ramsey. I had wanted to become a footballer but suffered a hip problem that

curtailed that and so started as an apprentice at the Bow Window, which was silver service. “Since then I have worked extensively in a number of local restaurants but when the chance came to open my own restaurant I thought I would go for it. We have been really busy since opening. It has been a massive leap, but I am really enjoying it.” Open Wednesdays to Sundays, Homme Nouveau, situated on Whittlesey Market Place, is available for breakfast, lunch, dinner and afternoon tea (with 24 hours’ notice) and can serve 45 covers. The decor of the premises has been transformed under the creative and artistic influence of Chris's wife Sarah and has a welcoming atmosphere. Chris added: “I plan to launch Wednesday ‘gastro pub’ nights with homemade pies, fish and chips, burgers etc to complement our fine dining and a la carte menu.” He is assisted in the kitchen by Rian Ripley and has three part-time front-of-house staff. The menu, when visited, included starters of scallops with variations of cauliflower, chorizo and dill oil, and beetroot cured salmon gravlax, pickled fennel and horseradish crème fraiche, and mains of fillet & belly of pork with sweet potato parmentier, sage, apple, leeks, kohlrabi, and cider jus, and cod supreme with sautéed potatoes, chorizo, bean, tomato and shrimp cassoulet, with basil pesto and samphire. Chris, who plans to regularly change the menu, has attracted a regular crowd of repeat diners, but said: “We have had a very good response from the local community and now I would like to attract diners from further afield.”

HOMEMADE TRUFFLES Ingredients Makes about 15 trufﬂes 2 double chocolate chip mufﬁns 2 tablespoons of chocolate hazelnut spread 1 handful of raisins or sultanas A few drops of water Coloured sugar sprinkles or your preferred choice of decoration

Method

• Crumble the chocolate mufﬁns (about 125g/4oz) into a large bowl, then stir in the chocolate hazelnut spread. • Add the raisins or sultanas and a few drops of water to create a crumbly mixture. • Squeeze teaspoonfuls of the mixture into balls and then roll the balls in the coloured sugar sprinkles. These will keep for about ﬁve days in an airtight container, if kept at room temperature.

MARCH Gardening Tips Although the temperatures should be rising, we cannot get too complacent as March often has a sting in the tail. Days are lengthening and clocks “spring” forward at the end of the month, allowing more time to be spent in the allotment. A good indication of whether to plant seeds or not is if the soil is cold to the touch then few seeds will germinate, but if the weeds are growing then the soil should be warm enough for seeds to germinate. You can help the soil warm up by covering it with black plastic or cloches. Weeding is best done as soon as the weeds start to appear or weed any that have survived our milder than usual winter: dig out perennials such as bindweed and couch grass and regularly hoe to kill off emerging annuals. Also, with the warmer weather appear pests such as slugs and snails; you can use slug pellets or a safe organic solution is to use nematodes, which you buy in packs, add water and water them in, preferably before you plant. If you want to grow asparagus, now is the time to prepare your bed and plant the crowns by digging a trench twelve inches deep and adding some well-rotted manure. Make a four inch ridge at the base and spread the roots of the crown over the ridge, replace the soil, leaving the tips just visible. Water in and add mulch. Don’t forget to leave the asparagus for two years before actually harvesting –it’s well worth the wait! If you have chitted your ﬁrst early potatoes and the ground is not frozen, they can be planted out from mid-March or early April, but it is well worth covering them to protect them from the late frosts. March is a busy month for planting seeds both indoors and out, although they may well need protecting under cloches. • Lettuces and other salad crops can be sown either indoors or outdoors under cloches or in cold frames. If you, or a relative, are in receipt of long-term care, either at home or in a care facility, you will know just how expensive it can be if you have to pay for your own care. Bills of around £5,000 per month are not uncommon. Even if you have limited means and you qualify for support from the local authority, you will often find that your family is called upon to top up what the local authority is prepared to pay. Often these top-ups can run into thousands of pounds per month. But some people might be paying for care when they don’t need to be. NHS continuing healthcare (CHC) is free healthcare provided by the NHS to individuals who have significant and ongoing healthcare needs. This package of care can be received in any setting outside of hospital, including care homes, hospices or even within your own home. Many people think that CHC is only available to a person if they are in a nursing home. This is not correct, as their health needs, not their location, is the key factor when considering eligibility. In order to be eligible for CHC, it must be established

that your need for care is primarily health-related. Additionally, this need must be assessed as complex, substantial and ongoing. It doesn’t matter what your income is or what savings you have - if you meet the criteria, you are entitled to free CHC funding. Remember, NHS continuing healthcare funding is not means-tested and it can cover up to 100% of care costs. If you are currently paying, or have previously paid for care, you could be eligible for funding to cover future care costs or to recover care costs which have already been paid. What you need is professional help in navigating your way through the assessment process. Asset Protection Trusts: Who to Trust A number of clients have sought our advice on ‘Probate Trusts’ or ‘Asset Protection Trusts’, presumably as someone has attempted to sell these products to them, or they have seen articles which suggest that you will be forced to sell your home to pay for your care. One cannot generalise in this way and much depends on your individual circumstances. We are seeing a growing trend whereby non-solicitor organisations have seen this as a marketing opportunity, and you may be approached by sales people standing at a kiosk outside a garden centre or supermarket trying to sell you these trusts by offering a free consultation in the comfort of your own home. The elderly are particularly targeted. Before you agree to this, just step back and think … should you really trust someone who is trying to sell you something so important at a kiosk? We are not saying that this is always a scam. Asset Protection Trusts can be beneficial in certain circumstances, but advice should be sought from a specialist. These organisations often use titles which lead people to think

they are legally qualified, for example “Legal Director” etc, but very often they are not legally qualified or regulated by a professional body. Trusts involve transferring your main home into the names of the trustees who then hold the property on trust on behalf of your beneficiaries (usually your children). Some of the fees we have seen quoted by these organisations run into thousands of pounds! ‘Probate Trusts’, on the other hand, can be of little or no benefit. A Grant of Probate is often required in any event following death, regardless of whether the main home still belongs to the deceased or has been placed in a trust, and the cost of obtaining probate is not as expensive as you may think. If you transfer your property into a Trust or to your children, and shortly thereafter need care, the full value of the home can still be taken into account. This is because the local authority may succeed in claiming that you deliberately deprived yourself of your home to avoid paying care home fees. Therefore, there is no guarantee that Trusts always work, and so you need to obtain advice based upon your individual circumstances.

Spend a Choral Evening in the Company of Beethoven and Bernstein at Peterborough Cathedral Peterborough Cathedral Choir, Youth Choir and Festival Chorus will join forces with Peterborough Choral Society and Peterborough Philharmonic Orchestra on Saturday March 21st, for a unique performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms. The concert is being held to mark the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth in 1770. The Ninth Symphony was the final complete symphony that Beethoven wrote, and was first performed in 1824. It is best known for its fourth and final movement, the stirring ‘Ode to Joy’ – one of the most beloved pieces of music in history. Pushing the boundaries in using choral forces in an orchestral form, this Beethoven masterpiece, performed in the spectacular setting of the Cathedral, will be something not to be missed. Bernstein’s inspiring Chichester Psalms was premiered in 1965 as part of that year’s Southern Cathedrals Festival. The piece contains text from a variety of Psalms and is performed in Hebrew. Bernstein’s website describes it as “a magically unique blend of Biblical Hebrew verse and Christian choral tradition; a musical depiction of the composer’s hope for brotherhood and peace”. New Farm Shop and Café Will Create Fifteen Jobs Vine House Farm in Deeping St Nicholas has long operated a very successful shop, selling their bird food and vegetables grown on the farm, plus other local produce. But now work has started on a new building which, along with a larger shop, will also house a one-hundred-seat café serving home-style dishes from mostly locally sourced ingredients. Vine House Farm is owned by the Watts family, and is run by Nicolas Watts, his daughter Lucy Taylor and her brother-in-law, Robert Golland. The whole farm operation is run with wildlife and the environment in mind, with this carried through to the new venture, where the café will overlook a newly developed pond and wildlife area. This will also be used for future events, where the local community and visitors from further afield can learn more of the value of native wildlife in a farming context. Lucy Taylor takes up the story: “The new farm 42

shop and café is something we’ve been planning for many years, but decided now was the time to put the plan into action. We’re all passionate about farming with the environment and wildlife in mind, plus encouraging people to buy local produce wherever possible. So the overall venture combines all these factors, as we’ll be able to use the facility to educate about how we farm; show people the birds and other wildlife we attract; plus of course sell local produce and serve it to customers in the café.” The current plan is to open the new shop and café later this year, or early 2021, and it’s expected this will create at least fifteen jobs for local people. History

John Clare - Helpston Country Poet

ow considered to be an important romantic poet, along with the likes of Wordsworth and Keats, John Clare, a virtually self-taught son of village peasants, achieved some recognition during his lifetime. Attending school part-time from seven to thirteen, he received a limited education, but studied hard and enjoyed books. Most of his life he worked in agriculture, either gardening, hay making or as a lime burner, writing in his spare time, his occupation always being described as “agricultural”. He was born in 1793 and spent much of his life at Helpston in the family cottage, (now a museum), moving to Northborough in 1832. He wrote about the country life and people that he knew and understood so well, often writing in local dialect – which did not endear him to the poetry establishment. Sometimes his poems were considered too ‘earthy’ for polite society, but he was reflecting the world that he knew. Later, he became recognised for the insightful and affectionate depiction of the countryside, seasons and the ways of ordinary countryfolk. His first collection of poems, “Poems Descriptive of Rural Scenery”, published in 1820, was well received, although some critics were picky about his grammar, which reflected his background and lack of formal training. Those people who could afford to buy his books tended not to understand or recognise his rural style. He did attract benefactors though and eventually published three volumes and became accepted as a leading figure in the literary world. Having written over 3,500 poems in his

lifetime, many more were published after his death. He was inspired by a local girl, Mary Joyce, for whom he seemed to hold affection for the rest of his life, but he was not considered a good match. He later fell in love with and married Patty Turner and had a large family of nine, many pre-deceasing him, as did his wife. He was always considered a loner and had a rare ability to observe things in great detail and describe them very accurately. He was a man of many talents, writing essays, pieces on wildlife, music and much more. It is thought that today he would have been diagnosed as bi-polar, and in 1837 was admitted to a mental institution at Epping, where he was treated sensitively, but in 1841 he walked back to Northborough believing he was meeting Mary. Later in 1841 he was admitted to a facility in Northampton where he died in 1864. During this time, he was free to roam and continued to write. How You Can Join the Fight in the War Against Scammers by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades It will come as no surprise to read that fraud is the most commonly experienced crime in the UK, with costs to the economy and individual victims running into billions of pounds. In January 2020 alone, £88,000 was lost to “Courier Fraud” in Cambridgeshire, with much more lost across other different types of frauds, especially “Romance Fraud”. The impact of fraud, scams and related offences can be devastating; ranging from unaffordable personal losses suffered by vulnerable victims to impacting the ability of organisations to stay in business. Data breaches continue to be a key enabler of fraud, with personal and financial information obtained in a breach, which is then used to commit frauds affecting individuals, the private and public sectors alike. Scammers are becoming more and more sophisticated in their methods; often posing as police, banking or government bodies in attempts to promote an authoritative approach. However, there are many agencies working harder than ever to stamp out the scammers - including Friends Against Scams; an initiative which empowers members of the public to join the fight on fraud and become a “Scam Champion”. Friends Against Scams is a National Trading Standards Scams Team initiative that aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams. The county-wide initiative is the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP) who are committed to working towards stamping out scams, from postal and online fraud to telephone scams and doorstep rogue traders. And it is easy to get involved. So, Brexit has happened with Boris Johnson’s deal in place and now the negotiations with the European Union on the fine details of that deal will follow. We have entered a transition period of eleven months for those details to be finalised – a huge task – but one which still impinges on pet owners. We have had some guidance from the Government, which I would like to share with you but details are subject to change throughout the year so, if you plan to travel with your pet cat, dog or ferret then please keep checking the gov.uk website regarding pet travel.

Listed Part 2 Status – This is a half-way state between the other two. Our pets would still need microchipping, tapeworm treatment and rabies vaccinations but instead of the passport, they would require an Animal Health Certificate By Deirdre Wilson (AHC) within ten days of travel to the EU and would need a new AHC for every trip into the EU. Peterborough Sings! - A Choral Celebration: The city’s unique music education charity, Peterborough Sings! celebrates a decade of singing in the city with a choral celebration at the Cresset on Friday March 6th at 7.30pm. It’s ten years since William Prideaux was appointed Director of Peterborough Male Voice Choir, (now widely regarded as one of the country’s finest male choirs), going on to establish women’s choir, Peterborough Voices, Peterborough Youth Choir and the Peterborough Sings! charity, forming a choral organisation of over two hundred singers. Peterborough Sings! aims to make singing as accessible to as many people as possible and one of the major ways this is achieved is through their very successful pop-up charity projects, “Men United in Song”, supporting Prostate Cancer UK, and “Sing for Life”, supporting Thorpe Hall Hospice, which between them have raised many thousands of pounds for charity as well as introducing thousands of local men and women to the joys of group singing. Looking For a New Challenge with Citizens Advice? Interviews will be held before the end of March, and training could start at the end of March, or early summer, depending on people’s availability. Volunteers can gain ‘on the job’ experience very quickly, by shadowing experienced volunteers. “People are surprised when they hear about the range of volunteer roles available,” said Megan, “and we can always find a role that is suitable for each individual’s range of skills and experience.”

Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire is issuing a call-out for people interested in becoming a volunteer in and around Bourne and Market Deeping. The organisation is heavily dependent on volunteers to provide the service - they make up over 80% of the people working there. Over the past few years, the variety of roles available has expanded considerably, and now there are eight different roles available, including people to work in reception, as an adviser, in research and campaigns, and as an administrator. There are also several ways in which clients can access the service, with e-mail, webchat and telephone channels available, in addition to the traditional face-to-face service. Volunteers need to be able to commit to six hours per week, and to be flexible as to where they work – they could be based in the main office in Stamford, or in the outreaches in Bourne and Market Deeping. The six hours per week may be on different days and in different locations. A description of all roles is given on the volunteer section of the Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire website www. citizensadvicesouthlincs.org.uk. “Of course, we always need new advisors to come through our training process,” said Megan Millar, Training Officer, “ but we mustn’t forget the positions behind the scenes, the hidden roles, that are vital to enable the smooth running of the service in our main offices, outreaches, and on telephone and e-mail. If anyone is able to volunteer for six hours a week, and is interested in getting involved in any roles, we would be delighted to hear from them, either by contacting me on trainingofficer@citizendsadvicesouthlincs. org.uk ; or by filling in the enquiry form on our website.”

School News Deeping St James Community Primary School We have had a busy term at DSJ, with a great deal happening. Our Mini Police children are currently undertaking a project to try to improve the congestion situation outside the front of school at the start and end of the school day. This is a scheme run by the Lincolnshire Police Force and headed up by our local PCSO and Mrs Pasqualino (our Year 1 teacher). Our school football A team have been in action this term and have won all of their matches against neighbouring schools. Our cross-country team have also been in action and performed excellently! The Year 6 children have been enjoying an Ancient Greek Day. They dressed up as Ancient Greeks and undertook various tasks throughout the day, including mosaic making, carving clay bracelets and producing authentic olive oil. They also took part in some Greek drama!

Baston CE Primary School Our Eco Group have been working hard over the past twelve months and were visited by a Green Flag inspector in November. The Group have done regular litter picks in the local community; monitored our electricity usage following the installation of our solar panels; and have promoted healthy living across the whole school. We are delighted to report that we passed the inspection and are now extremely proud owners of a ‘Green Flag!’

Our Year 6 pupils attended a Construction Day in Stamford in November where they learnt a variety of skills within the construction industries.
