Introduction

Welcome to Your April Issue. Welcome to our April edition and I’m astonished at just how quickly, within a few weeks, we’ve moved on from those cold, dark mornings, all that rain and all of those gales … and a welcome “bye-bye to Brexit!” Blossom and blooms are here, and summer is nearly upon us. And yet … to quote a good old Lincolnshire saying, “There’s ollus summat, mee-at!” and that something has certainly arrived with a vengeance. As we all try and come to terms with the Coronavirus pandemic, (with self-isolation, working from home, an almost complete shut-down of schools and universities, total absence of sport, panic buying and gloomy economic prospects all round), it’s increasingly difficult to “Keep Calm and Carry On!” (as we Brits are often advised to do). Let me add my own words of encouragement to you all, hoping that our issue will bring some light to the darkness and keep you informed and entertained, as we come together to celebrate a happy, and hopefully healthy, Easter.

Claire x

Over the last six years and almost seventy welcomes that I have written, never have I felt as uncomfortable as this. Whereas, we would normally be tempting you to visit restaurants and pubs, sign up for leisure centre activities or make the most of the great outdoors, this month the coronavirus pandemic has changed all that! Our team have created a magazine with “What’s on” activities and much more in the way of Easter-themed treats to enjoy … only for it to be transformed by the passage of time, and how quickly has that been? Features have been replaced and wonderful additions have appeared – volunteers offering help to ‘selfisolators’, for example. Instead of my usual monthly moment of mirth (a.k.a. dodgy one-liners), I leave you with the thought-provoking words of one of our foremost poets, Lemn Sissay: “How do you do it?” said the night. “How do you wake and shine?” “I keep it simple,” said light. “One day at a time.” Stay healthy, heed all the advice … and enjoy the read.

Unfortunately, however, we have also heard from new clients about their negative experiences elsewhere with ‘so-called professionals’ in this field. Sadly, not everyone seems to give this ‘medical procedure’ the seriousness it deserves. These parties are often carried out by individuals who do not have the requisite training in aesthetics and, as mobile practitioners, can be difficult to contact post-treatment, in the event of a problem.

There have been many disaster stories, especially within the last three years, of women holding parties where these procedures are undertaken. Unfortunately, these events are organised as a cheaper option and inevitably lead to poor decisions being

Make the Most of Every Day in These Troubled Times BY CLAIRE GRAY, RENU - HEALTH, BEAUTY & FITNESS

A

Here are ten simple steps that will help you make the most of every single day.

s we now find ourselves in the grip of this unprecedented “lockdown”, with Renu closed, along with most other establishments, I’d like to share the following with you. I hope it can provide some comfort and hope that life will go on as before, once we’ve all acted together to defeat the coronavirus.

1

7

2

8

3

Exercise - Research shows that just twenty minutes moderate exercise can make you calmer, happier and more equipped to deal with whatever life throws at you today.

It can seem that one day, it’s new year and the next, we are changing the clocks and preparing for the summer. The next step is summer days ahead, holidays, swimsuits and revisiting summer wardrobes.

4

Accomplish one big task This may be as simple as one of the above! Set one task, not three, and feel good when you have achieved it.

5

Do one thing that you love Hobbies and doing things that you love breathe life into who you are. Do one thing that you love every day.

Making a simple plan for each individual day, rather than longterm objectives can help you enjoy life and achieve your goals.

Rest effectively - Rest is as essential to your body as water and air. Schedule some time to rest in your day and don’t feel guilty about it.

Get a good night’s sleep Take a look at your sleeping habits. You will have a much more productive day after a good night’s sleep. Eat right - Put your health and wellbeing at the top of your priority list.

Our lives are a large collection of single days, one right after the other. The sun rises, the sun sets, and it rises again. And in the end, the lives we choose to live will be determined by how we choose to spend each day.

6

Be present with others - Put away distractions, engage in conversations and ask questions. Give to someone else - Invest your life in someone else every day. Help a co-worker, fund a local charity or just make that phone call to a friend who needs to hear from you.

9

Nurture your soul - Find time each day to appreciate your surroundings and be grateful. Our lives are more than flesh and blood.

10

Reset - Tomorrow is another day with great potential and opportunity. Take time each evening to appreciate the good things about today and make a plan for tomorrow. Please see our Facebook page for ideas on how to stay fit healthy and gorgeous during lockdown.

WE’LL BE BACK!

Reasons to be

Cheerful and Responsible in Anxious Times

Writing an article at such interesting, challenging and unprecedented times is a fascinating task. Anything I write today (March 12th) about the Coronavirus situation will likely be out of date by the time you come to read this article in April, so I won’t go into specifics. What I do want to do is just offer my thoughts around the way this situation makes people feel, act and react when there is anxiety and concern about the unknown. Firstly, morale is massively important. I am, and always have been, a believer in the power of thinking positively. And I think the same is true in this circumstance. My approach to trying to be positive is to make sure I have as much information as possible. Running a gym, and more importantly being a dad, I read, and I read a lot. Every morning when I wake, I read the news, and every day in truth I read it again probably ten times. And I don’t just read from one source. It is important to take a globally balanced view when it comes to using the media for your education about any subject. And I do not use social media as a place to look for ‘fact’. Indeed, to take the opinion and reaction of others on social media may not always be beneficial. You need to

10

make your own choices and formulate your own narrative, based on sound information. And it is a person’s responsibility to seek information. Ignorance is no defence when it comes to being responsible in any part of life. While some information makes us feel uneasy, we should all calmly take the time to read and be educated. Reading gives us context. There are all kinds of contexts that can be applied to this situation. You can use numbers, percentages, statistics and trends. Importantly we all need to learn to find reliable, factual information. Speculation, hearsay and “ifs” and “maybes” serve only to make us wonder, worry and catastrophise. If you are anything like me, imagination can be your greatest friend and your greatest enemy. Find fact and be pragmatic. All I ask personally of people using Empire Gym is that you make absolutely sure you read the sign at the gym entrance before you step inside. Understand it and respect it. If we ask you not to come in after having been travelling, then don’t. If we ask you not to come in if you are feeling unwell, then don’t. Any questions about how this will affect your membership can be done calmly and properly

Health to solve this problem.

over the phone once you have got home. And for all I’ve said about social media, we are having to use it as a tool of disseminating information at this time. So, if you use it, keep up-to-date with the things we post on our official Facebook page. So, what am I optimistic about? As I write this, I am optimistic about our reaction as a nation so far. Each part of the world will deal with this scenario in their own way, hopefully in an educated calm, decisive and proportionate way, but there are things about us as a nation that can be in our favour. Our media bamboozles, worries and panics us with bold headlines, but while these headlines cause stress and concern, they do at least gather the attention of the nation. That is a good thing. Some people are naturally cautious, vigilant and careful, others live in a more carefree way, but at this time we all must be aware and have our attention turned to the job in hand. Anything therefore that makes people think, is likely to make them take appropriate action.

And there is the turning of the seasons. The occasional sunny day. The lighter mornings and longer, lighter evenings. These may seem small things but at a time of almost perpetual ‘bad news’, our bodies and our minds react well to light. Light itself is optimistic and the lifting of mood will have much to say in the way we deal with Coronavirus. I could go on, but I want to conclude by expressing my absolute respect and admiration for the senior citizens in our local society and, of course, those who still attend the gym in their numbers! Your balance and poise bring me calm. Your pragmatism and humour brighten my day and your apparent iron will to not let this situation worry you is a lesson to me. It may be because your generation has seen so much and encountered many an obstacle and, indeed, that you know what real challenges are, and how to deal with them personally and collectively. And I salute you. It is my job therefore, and the job of all the generations beneath you to make sure we do our duty to make sure the senior citizens in our society are protected from this new illness.

Then there is the ‘panic buying’. Now, I don’t agree with it, but if hand sanitiser is in short supply for periods of time, it means people want to use it. So at least people are taking this type of action. Indeed, in the gym, I have noticed a positive change in people’s hand cleanliness behaviour. We insist that all people sanitise on the way in and way out! And, on the whole, they do. And if I see someone fail to do so, I tell them to follow the rules.

Every small decision we make should be with this in mind. • • •

Then there is our collective spirit and ‘Britishness’, if I am allowed to say so. We queue. We hold doors. And we pull together during a crisis. I really do believe there is a ‘sense and sensibility’ and an order amongst the nation that is not quite matched anywhere on earth. I’ve always felt it when arriving back home from overseas. I hope this spirit and order remains and that we can indeed set an example to the world. This is in no way to pass an opinion on any other nation. We, of course, must all learn from one another and work together

Respect your elders. Wash your hands. Smile at one another.

And if we need to take some unprecedented action to help quell this new concern, let’s do it together with absolute attention to detail and responsibility, but with good humour, optimism and resolve. There is much to be optimistic about … if we all play our part.

William Burdock and Orla Pike laid the foundations for a series of outstanding performances with second and first place respectively in the boys and girls 12/U 100IM. Orla took her second victory later in the schedule in the 12/U 50m breaststroke.

Age is No Limit for Orthodontics! BY RICHARD COUSLEY, CONSULTANT ORTHODONTIST AT THE PRIESTGATE CLINIC

M

ost people associate orthodontics with teenagers wearing metal fixed braces. However, nowadays the range of ages of patients suitable for orthodontics extends from seven to seventy years! Here are a few pointers to age considerations if you’re considering having either your or your child’s teeth straightened.

BEFORE

AFTER

BEFORE

AFTER

PRIMARY SCHOOL AGE There’s a common misconception that children needn’t see an orthodontist until all adult teeth have erupted. However, most children benefit from a specialist assessment by eleven years of age, and some seven to ten-year-old children require early interception for bite problems and ectopic teeth (growing in abnormal jaw positions).

braces or transparent plastic aligners. Fortunately, many types of tooth and bite improvements are still biologically possible after facial growth has ceased because bone is a dynamic tissue throughout life.

A seven-year-old where the upper left incisor’s eruption is impeded, being treated with a transparent aligner brace.

Therefore, even seventy-somethings can be treated successfully, provided that their teeth and gums are disease-free.

.......................................................................................

In addition, a small number of adult patients, with a severe jaw mismatch, and/or airway restrictions benefit greatly from brace treatment combined with jaw (orthognathic) surgery (performed by a maxillofacial surgeon).

THE TEENAGE YEARS This is prime brace-time since the adult teeth have erupted and crucially facial growth may be harnessed and modified, especially if there’s an ‘underbite’ and small lower jaw size. .......................................................................................

ADULTHOOD Adults form a large proportion of my patients, typically having aesthetic (tooth coloured) fixed

A specialist can accurately diagnose features and then advise on the complete range of goals and treatment options for simple, through to complex problems. A sixty-eight-year-old lady’s teeth before and after one year of orthodontics.

Your Health

You are Enough! BY NICOLE WOODCOCK, HUMMINGBIRD HYPNOTHERAPY

There are so many people I have seen in my practice that repeatedly say the same thing… “I don’t think I do enough.” Usual comments include, “There just isn’t enough time”, “I don’t do enough” and “I don’t think I am enough for them.” The simple definition of “enough” is “as much or as many as required.” With an ever-increasing to-do list which might involve juggling roles, parenting, relationships, family, work, fitness, self-care (usually last on the list!), it seems that we are in competition with ourselves to do more and rest less. Work-based stress and anxiety are on the increase, mental health issues are on the rise and

becoming prevalent in children from the age of four. With more devices to keep us awake and wired, caffeine freely available to keep us stimulated, sugar to keep our body functioning and working longer, school pressures increasing on children from primary school age, I sometimes wonder when it will all stop. So, how do we turn it around? Learning to slow down. Walking, moving, eating well and finding the time to eat. Staying hydrated and regularly getting fresh air. Writing a page of daily achievements and acknowledging what has been good. What are you looking forward to? Enjoy conversations and actively listen. At Hummingbird Hypnotherapy, we discuss the “three Ps”:

Positive Actions

Positive Interactions

Positive Thoughts.

All are designed to enable the brain to focus on the daily positives and, by increasing serotonin, making us feel happier and more content. If the body is constantly in a fight/ flight scenario, then it will always respond with anxiety, anger or depression and, at times, a combination of all three. If you are struggling with your mental health, consistently feeling overwhelmed and not doing enough, please get in touch. Positive thoughts!

RECHARGE YOUR HEALTH As we move into spring, are you thinking once again about weight loss, healthy eating and getting your health back? How about this time actually doing something about it … NOW?

as good as the people on the front of the raw food books. What concerns me, though, is that many of these ‘onesize-fits-all’ eating regimes can actually be damaging to people’s health.

Something that will last: an eating plan that you can keep for a lifetime, because it suits YOU, is designed FOR you and takes into account WHO you are.

ENCOURAGING WORDS:

So many diets and ways of eating are based on statistics, trends and ideas; the fact that it worked for one person and they wrote a book about it; scientific studies that leave out your individuality, That’s the secret - your individuality! Vegan. Vegetarian. Alkaline. Paleo. Raw. Juicing. Green smoothies. The list of hip ways to eat has expanded rapidly. Every week, it seems we’re bombarded with a new super food, a new way to lose “7 pounds in 7 days”, a new cleanse, a new smoothie recipe, a new way to be part of the cool-food crowd. True freedom and empowerment with your body doesn’t come from conforming to what that skinny woman or six-packed man is telling you to eat. It can only be found through honouring your physiology as completely unique and knowing exactly what your body needs. What works for one person, may not work for the next... so without this precise knowledge, anything else is guesswork. You end up jumping from bandwagon to bandwagon, trying to find the magic bullet that will help you get slim and look

Kerrie Owen: “I had read about eating right for your blood type but never really understood why that was important. I had despaired when using most common diets that nothing worked for me longterm. I am now committed to changing my diet and lifestyle in line with Gene Living principles and guidance.” Sue: “Since eating for my blood type, I feel as if I have been internally cleansed and a fog lifted from my brain.” Roy: “During my recovery from chemotherapy for bone marrow cancer, I found I was struggling to regain my energy and health in general. Despite doing quite a lot of research on nutrition and healthy lifestyle, including changing my diet by cutting out all processed foods and only eating fresh food, including a lot of vegetables, I felt I had reached a plateau which it seemed I could not rise above. It was only after consulting Wendy and adopting the blood group diet, that I saw an improvement in my health. This, in conjunction with the vitamins recommended by her, specific to my condition and blood type, has returned my health to normality.”

SPORT IS BACK ON THE MENU FOR PETERBOROUGH SCHOOLS Funding and staff shortages at dozens of Peterborough schools have found an unlikely saviour in the form of two local lads, turned football stars. With money at a premium for many local schools for several years now, the enterprising friends/ business partners have pitched in with help and support across all areas of sports and after-school clubs, through their award-winning company Youth Dreams Project. The business, which started back in 2014 by Peterborough residents, Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Luke Steele, and his best friend, Luke Kennedy, offers schools help with everything from PE classes to evening and holiday clubs – in the simple belief that world-class sports coaching positively impacts the lives of the young people who they help. The born-and-bred Peterborians met when they were signed by Peterborough Academy aged just seven, and they have been inseparable ever since. They both became professional football players, Luke Steele landing a job at Manchester United and Luke Kennedy heading to Rushden and Diamonds. Kennedy’s career was cut short however, and he instead moved into a career in the Cambridgeshire Constabulary, whilst Luke Steele took on goalkeeping roles for several more teams including Barnsley, Panathinaikos, Bristol City and now Nottingham Forest (although presently, on loan at Millwall). But it was Kennedy’s work within youth intervention programmes in partnership with Peterborough City Council, POSH and The Youth Offending Service that provided the eventual inspiration for Youth Dreams Project – a social enterprise business that delivers the highest standard of sports coaching, providing opportunities for as many young people as possible. Luke Kennedy and Luke Steele 18

Back left : Luke Kennedy and Luke Steele, along with their “Youth Dreams Project” coaches police. I recognise that all young people have got a gift and, even if it’s not related to sport, sport gives them the perfect platform to grow and have the confidence to pursue a dream. My vision for YDP is to continue to grow and touch the lives of as many children in Peterborough as possible.” And that has played out ever since, to the point where they regularly attract over fifty children to their evening ‘kickabouts’ and save many schools from being unable to offer adequate levels of physical education. As a result of their passion and determination, the pair now work closely with twenty-nine different schools in and around Peterborough. Mike Goode, Head of Physical Education at Hampton College, outlines just how they help: “At Hampton, we have been working with Youth Dreams Project for five years in a number of different sporting contexts, to support our curriculum delivery, extra-curricular provision and examination classes. The quality of the work from all of the coaches has been first-rate, and the hands-on approach that Luke Kennedy offers has facilitated the way that his coaches deliver the sessions, and this ensures that they are tailored to the needs of the group and to the outcomes required by ourselves, as a PE department.” For further information, please visit www.youthdreamsproject.co.uk or call Hannah Penson on 07984 409430. POPULAR CAMERA CLUB EXHIBITION ATTRACTS HUGE CROWDS Deepings Camera Club held its seventeenth annual exhibition recently. There were almost 140 prints on display at the Community Centre in Douglas Road, Market Deeping. There was, as always, a very wide range of subjects on show so there was something for everyone to enjoy. activities covering all aspects of photography throughout the year. For more information about the club, please visit www.deepingscameraclub.co.uk or come along to one of their meetings where you’ll receive a warm welcome.

Despite the wild and windy weather, this ever-popular event attracted hundreds of visitors who were given the opportunity to vote for their favourite images. When the public votes were counted, first place went to Graham Clegg’s photograph of a kingfisher in flight, with ‘Milky Way over the Sirens’ by Pete Atkinson in second place. Graham Clegg also scooped third place with a beautiful print of a pair of harvest mice. An image of a field mouse on a wheat ear by Peter Gray took the fourth spot, closely followed by Kath Allen’s photograph of a boat shed at Lindisfarne. Chris Rogers, the club’s Chairman, said how delighted he was that so many people had come to see the excellent work on display which showcased the interests, skills and talent of the club’s members. He added that he was also extremely grateful to everyone who had given time to prepare the exhibition and to welcome visitors over the weekend. Deepings Camera Club meets each week on Wednesday at 7.30pm at the Deepings Community Centre. There is a wide range of speakers and

EASTER BISCUITS Banish Easter holiday boredom by getting the kids involved in some baking! These easy biscuits are fun to decorate and yummy to eat!

Method

• Place the butter in a large mixing bowl with the caster sugar. Use a wooden spoon to beat until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the egg until well mixed, then gradually add the flour. Use your hands to bring the mixture together to a stiff dough. Gather into a ball and chill for 30 minutes (the dough, not you!). • Heat the oven to gas 4, 180°C, fan 160°C. Roll out the dough on a work surface lightly dusted with flour until it's the thickness of a £1 coin. With an oval cutter (or a cardboard egg-shaped template), cut out egg-shaped biscuits, using the rolled out trimmings to make more. Place on baking trays and bake in the oven for six to 10 minutes, depending on size, until golden brown.

Ingredients Makes approx. 18 biscuits 200g butter (room temperature) 200g caster sugar 1 egg 400g plain flour 250g royal icing sugar Assorted food colourings

• Allow the biscuits to cool for five minutes before removing from the baking tray to cool completely. • To decorate, make up the icing as directed on the packet. Divide between bowls adding a little food colouring to each bowl. Place the mixture into piping bags and get creative with your designs – the kids may like to use sweets or sprinkles too! These biscuits will keep for between one and two weeks when stored in a sealed cake tin.

Your Garden

April Gardening Tips As temperatures rise (we hope) and days lengthen, there is plenty to do on the allotment or vegetable patch: sowing, weeding and planting. However, beware as there is always a threat of night frosts and it is better to be cautious than to take a risk, as precious time will be wasted: don’t forget to cover early sowings with fleece or cloches if frosts are forecast. A major task in April is planting out potatoes. Although there is no hard and fast rule about dates, a rough guide would be; plant out first earlies around late March, second earlies early to mid-April and maincrops mid to late April. Potatoes need a sunny site, away from frost pockets – the newly emerging foliage is susceptible to frost damage in April and May and, if frosts are forecast, cover the emerging shoots with soil or fleece to protect them.

Other jobs include: • Last chance to plant onion sets and sow aubergines and tomatoes indoors for transplanting out. • Most root crops can be sown now; it is probably your last chance to sow parsnips. • Sow sweetcorn – an interesting way of germinating sweetcorn is by pre-chitting: lay the seeds on a layer of damp kitchen paper then place a layer of paper over in an airtight box. Check daily and when a small white sprout appears, plant the seed about half to an inch deep in potting compost. • Last chance to plant onion sets. • You can sow the following outdoors but under cover; beetroot, cucumbers, lettuces, turnips, oriental leaves, leeks, cabbage and salad leaves. They can be sown in pots, modules or prepared seed beds from which you can transplant them. If you do grow any seedlings in trays or modules and they have grown a couple of ‘true leaves’, prick them out and move to individual pots or larger modules. You can also harden off young plants by putting them outdoors on sunny day but bring them back in at night or put them in a cold frame or under cloches.

The traditional planting method for potatoes is to dig a trench 12cm (5in) deep and space the tubers 30cm (12in) apart for earlies and 37cm (15in) for maincrop, in rows 24in (60cm) apart for earlies and 75cm (30in) apart for maincrop. Alternatively, you can grow the potatoes under black polythene, planting the tubers through slits. The big advantage of this • Don’t forget to regularly hand weed or hoe method is that there is no need to earth up, around seedlings as the weeds appear as and the new potatoes form just below soil level they create a lot of competition for food which means there's no digging to harvest and moisture. them – they'll lie just below the sheet. • Make sure that fruit trees, canes and bushes You can sow several seeds indoors; chillies, are kept watered, as any fruit planted in peppers, celery, courgettes and summer the last 18 months is susceptible to drought squashes, runner and French beans, sprouting damage. Adding mulch around the base broccoli, Florence fennel, courgettes, summer will help. squashes and sweetcorn are • Sow maincrop peas and make the last just a few. sowing of summer broad beans. Enjoy the longer days!

Your Finances

Keep Calm and Carry On BY MATTHEW BIGGS - LIBERTY PARTNERSHIP LTD

If there’s something that we Brits do well it’s staying calm when things start to get a bit choppy. And I think it’s fair to say, with the outbreak of Coronavirus, we are in very choppy times!

As the United States of America is currently the world’s largest economy and thus directly affects us all, let’s look at the impact the Coronavirus is having on their main stock index, the Dow Jones, and how this compares to previous periods of uncertainty.

I’m sure most of you who are reading this will have seen the negative impact Coronavirus has had on the world economy and, subsequently, the uncertainty seen in the global stock markets. It would be very easy to panic and assume the ‘worst-case scenario’, which often leads to irrational and bad decisions being made. However, I want to take this opportunity to offer you all a little reassurance and perspective.

28

D I S C O V E R I N G

At the time of writing this article, the Dow Jones has fallen from its record high level of 29,551.22 at February 12th 2020 to 23,553.22 on March 12th 2020. This fall represents a 20.30% drop which, there is no denying, is a large drop in a short space of time. Let’s now look at how the Dow Jones reacted during the 2008/2009 financial crisis. Between

T H E

Deepings

October 1st 2007 and March 5th 2009, the Dow Jones fell from 14,087.55 to 6,594.44, which represents a drop of 53.19%. So why is this relevant? Well, from the Dow Jones low at the beginning of 2008/2009 to the start of February 2020, it had increased by 22,788.13 or 186.67%. All of this tells us one thing … we’ve been here before! Yes, it’s not very pleasant, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. We firmly believe we will, just like in 2008/2009, recover from this position and it’s simply a case of “when” and not “if”. So, let’s do what we do best - keep calm and carry on!

Does Your Lawn Need Help?

I

s your lawn a lovely green piece of perfection or is it suffering with lots of weed and unsightly dead patches in it?

Either way, help and advice is on hand from Simon and Gale who run our local GreenThumb lawn treatment service. Their top tips for helping us look after our lawns as we enter spring are: ■ Keep mowing – on a fine day give it a cut on a high setting. Long and wet lawns will always encourage moss. ■ Let in the light – cut back over-hanging bushes that deprive the grass of essential sunlight and good air flow. Pick up rotting leaves and brush off worm casts. ■ Rake or scarify out dead grass – unsightly dead brown patches won’t miraculously turn green so while the lawn is dormant rake out as much dead matter as you can ready for seeding in spring. We can help!

■ Aerate your lawn – using a fork, spiker or aerator, now is the perfect time to sort compacted ground and improve drainage. It's energetic work so if you don’t want to do it yourself call GreenThumb! ■ Sort those weeds – it's best to tackle these in the spring when the weather conditions are right. We’re the people to help! Simon and Gale offer a FREE visit where they carry out a full analysis of your lawn and give advice. Treatments are based on lawn size and start from as little as £15 four times a year.

If the effects of winter have taken their toll on your garden, property or driveway, you may be thinking about calling in the experts to inject a little life back into the space at the rear or front of the house, or the exterior itself. But whatever the job, don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’. Firstly, they have caught you unawares, just when you have returned from the school run or got home after a long day at the office, a time when you don’t really have time to think and make an informed decision. Equally as disturbing, they will target elderly or vulnerable people living alone. Secondly, any offer which appears ‘too good to be true’ often is just that! Remember: ▪ Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment. ▪ Don’t take their word for it when they tell you urgent work or repairs need doing. ▪ Do ask them to qualify who they are and to leave you a contact number. ▪ Never hand over any cash as a deposit for work which they say they will return to carry out. ▪ Feel free to ask to see their credentials and/or examples of their work ▪ Ask them politely to leave if you feel uncomfortable. Equally, be wary when it comes to leaflets dropping through your door; some may not be all that they seem. We know that there are many genuine companies who deliver leaflets, but there are also many scammers. The following simple rules which could give away tell-tale signs of a rogue trader: ▪ Do they say, ‘We are only in your area today’? ▪ Are they offering a reduced price for cash or having a one-time ‘special offer’? ▪ Are they trying to push you into a quick decision? Safe Local Trades is a supporter of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP), which is committed to working towards stamping out scams of this kind. We also work closely with Crime Prevention Officers across the county who alert us to scam trends which we can share with our consumers and our members. Property News

Something to Shout About BY PAUL BRIGGS, MANAGING DIRECTOR

Every town has a variety of styles of estate agent, from the soulless, “corporate” agency driven by figures, to the one-man band; from ‘arty-contemporary’ to ‘pushy-salesy’.

generally, you would find us to be highly personable and empathetic to the needs of our clients; that we have time to listen with interest; and that we believe in providing straight-talking good advice that is responsibly realistic, rather than insincerely flattering.

Each type tends to appeal to a specific sector of the propertyowning community and rightly so – buyers and sellers alike need to feel comfortable working with an agent that reflects their own values.

Yet our focus is always on your success. Ultimately, it comes down to transparency and integrity, which are the cornerstones of our business. When combined with the passion we also have for results, the balance is a unique and enjoyable service of which we are extremely proud.

So perhaps it’s time we actually spelt out exactly the type of approach we strive to adopt. Certainly, many have commented that our office design and website have a pleasant contemporary feel, but what does this actually say about the people behind the business, and how would this impact on you as a buyer or seller? As an independent agency, we have the flexibility to adopt whatever approach we feel is of greatest benefit to our clients. With the constraints of corporate standardisation, our values are more likely to be a reflection of our own aspirations.

It follows that when we employ new staff, they also mirror our values and quickly share the same sense of pride. Indeed, our very low staff turnover rate is a reflection of a happy ship – something on which many of our clients have commented. Sometimes, when you feel the formula is right, it does no harm to shout about it. Why not call us on 01778 349300 and see for yourself what all the fuss is about?

If you were to analyse the approach we take to estate agency and business

School News DEEPING ST JAMES COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL We have had a busy term at DSJ, with a great deal happening. Our Mini Police children are currently undertaking a project to try to improve the congestion situation outside the front of school at the start and end of the school day. This is a scheme run by the Lincolnshire Police Force and headed up by our local PCSO and Mrs Pasqualino (our Year 1 teacher). Our school football A team have been in action this term and have won all of their matches against neighbouring schools. Our cross-country team

have also performed excellently! The Year 6 children have been enjoying an Ancient Greek Day. They dressed up as Ancient Greeks and undertook tasks including mosaic making, carving clay bracelets and producing authentic olive oil. They also took part in some Greek drama! As you may be aware, we have a set of dedicated and hardworking governors at DSJ, who meet throughout the year, supporting the school to be the best that it can be. The chairs of the governing bodies from all of our cluster schools also meet up to discuss wider opportunities to support educational opportunities in The Deepings. The governors are selected so that we have a wide, and balanced, range of skills on the committees. At present we do have a vacancy, so if you are interested in becoming a governor at DSJ, please contact the school. Once again, if DSJ can be of any assistance in our local community, please don’t hesitate to come in and talk to me. Ian Wilkinson, Headteacher

DEEPING ST JAMES COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL Year 4 pupils from Baston took a trip to Willow Tree Fen in February to learn about different habitats and the food chains within them. After a nature walk, they created a habitat for one of the local animals and they took part in a variety of activities, such as pond dipping and bug hunting. Our Year 6s have been learning about famous artists, such as Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock. They created a range of emotion painting using Pollock’s techniques. During Forest School this term, Year 1 have been exploring materials and tools. They were challenged with creating a wild and wacky structure in teams

out of natural materials that they attached using hammers. On February 27th, EYFS visited the local church to learn about some of the important features within it. The children learned where to find the nave, chancel, sanctuary, altar, pulpit, organ and pillars and then explored the church looking for specific items of interest as part of a treasure hunt. On Thursday March 5th, the whole school dressed up as a word from one of their favourite books. We had great fun guessing the words! A few of them were: windswept, juicy, sweet, flowers, attire, rhyme, tired and toadstool. There was a lot of creative ideas!

School News WILLIAM HILDYARD CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY AND NURSERY SCHOOL Children and staff at William Hildyard Church of England Primary and Nursery School had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day on Thursday March 5th. Everyone came to school with their favourite book and dressed as a character from the book. Throughout the day, the children enjoyed lots of speaking and listening activities based on their characters. Chloe, aged 6, said, “I liked reading in the library because we shared our book with a friend.” They also re-created their characters using bio-degradable spoons made from corn starch. Mrs Lucas, English subject leader at William Hildyard said, “We have high aspirations for all our children we want them to show curiosity and fascination with books, develop strong speaking and listening skills so that they can communicate with confidence, and learn how to work effectively together. World Book Day is a brilliant opportunity for us to teach these life skills in a fun and exciting way. I would like to say a big thank you to all the parents and friends of the school who have supported World Book Day again this year.”

WILLIAM HILDYARD CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY AND NURSERY SCHOOL The Key Stage 2 Dramatic Arts Club at William Hildyard Church of England Primary and Nursery School performed brilliantly at The Primary Dance Festival held at The Cresset, in Peterborough on Wednesday February 12th. The children take part in the dance festival each year and thoroughly enjoy the experience. The theme for the dance show, this year, was ‘Memories’ and the children chose to perform to a mix of two songs (“This is the Greatest Show” and “This is Me”) from “The Greatest Showman” film. The children worked alongside local choreographer, Kerrie Pateman, to devise an energetic and showA P RI L 2 0 2 0

stopping routine that raised the roof of the theatre with great applause from the audience. Mrs Parr, who leads the Dramatic Arts Club said, “We couldn’t be prouder of the children - what a fantastic representation of our school they are. They danced with all their hearts and shone, up there on the big stage. What they have achieved as individuals is amazing; the way they have grown in confidence and proven that they can do this in front of a huge audience has done wonders for their self-belief - they have shown great resilience, commitment and determination. We can’t wait to perform again in June.”

Will & Probate Services

Plan for the Worst, Hope for the Best

ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING DIRECTOR AT WILL AND PROBATE SERVICES

As I sit down to write this month’s article, the number of Coronavirus cases has almost doubled in a day, there is no hand sanitiser in the supermarkets and there is a real risk of a shortage in toilet rolls! Has the world gone mad, is it all hype, or are we in for an unprecedented pandemic? I guess we will know more by the time this gets published. Either way, the whole episode has highlighted just how unprepared most people are for a shock to the system. Most of us have no emergency plan and, as a nation, we cross our fingers and hope that nothing bad happens to our nearest and dearest. Self-isolate for fourteen days is the Government’s current advice, but a huge number of people can’t afford to be off work that long; statutory sick pay is only £95 per week and if you are self-employed you won’t even get that. The average level in savings in the UK (£813) will just about see you through your quarantine period.

Hopefully, this crisis will pass and, when it does, how many of us will go on to reflect and plan properly for the next time? There is always a ‘next time’! My job is to get people to plan, to put in place the right legal documents in case the worst happens. I have been doing it for fifteen years and have helped thousands of people put the right plans in place for their futures and that of their families. It’s times like these that makes me realise, however, just how small a dent we have made in the population locally. I am not going to lecture you, although I could! I just invite you to ask yourself one question – “Have I done everything I could have done to protect my family if I get sick, or if I die?” If you need us, call 01778 382723 and we can make an appointment. If you don’t want to do it face-toface, we can do it by video link. In the meantime, stay safe, be healthy and go and wash your hands (again)!

Are Local People Struggling to Get Hold of Cash? Citizens Advice in South Lincolnshire have launched a research pilot to see if people in the area can access cash when they wish to. Recent research by “Which?” magazine indicates that the numbers of cash machines in the UK are falling. As an example, within the South Holland area, customers in Long Sutton have lost access to two banks. Surveys have been sent out to the rural outreaches in Bourne and Market Deeping, as well as further afield in Long Sutton, Holbeach and Sutton Bridge. The research aims to get a picture of whether access to cash is an issue and what the consequences are for residents of these areas.

fifteen-minute assessment at the New Community Centre, Market Deeping on Wednesday mornings, before an afternoon appointment, if needed, or a referral to Deeping St James fortnightly on Thursdays, where the United Charities have funded an outreach at the Institute, on 38 Church Street. NB. Due to the Coronavirus epidemic, outreach branches are closed as of March 18th. It is envisaged that the “Access to Cash” survey will be available online at www.citizensadvicesouthlincs.org.uk.

The survey will run for three months, (March to June 2020), and was rolled out in the week starting March 9th. The local Citizens Advice Research and Campaigns lead, Juliet Godbeer-Dunbar said, “We are particularly concerned that some people in our rural areas now find it very difficult to get the cash they need. Recent bank closures and the increasing disappearance of cash machines locally mean that some people will have to travel to bigger towns to access cash. This is likely to be a special problem for older people and those without easily available transport. Our survey aims to find out just how big a problem this might be.”

After a successful consultation and with the full support of the Baker Dearing Trust we are finally able to share this excellent news, which means that young people who are passionate about STEM are now able to come to our school at an even earlier age. We are the school of choice for the engineers, architects, scientists and designers of the future in Peterborough and the surrounding area. Our innovative approach prioritises employer-led enrichment activities, work experience and personalised careers’ guidance, alongside technical and traditional qualifications at GCSE and A Level standard. "Expanding our age range to include year 9 means we are able to offer our specialist curriculum to even more of Peterborough's young engineers, architects and designers." GPUTC Principal, Mr Bisley A P RI L 2 0 2 0

To ensure students are well prepared for their GCSE exams, Year 9 students will study English, Maths and Science in a way that is linked closely to their project-based challenges. Teachers will focus on closing any knowledge and skills gaps, embedding and accelerating students’ learning, ensuring a smooth and purposeful transition from their previous schooling, so all students are ready to start their GCSE programmes in earnest at the start of Year 10. Students will also have one hour of PE and one hour of personal development per week. Applications are now open for Year 9 as well as Year 10 and 12 for a September 2020 start. For more information visit www.gputc.com, call 01733 715950, email applications@gputc.com and follow our socials @GPUTC

Figures shown are for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption and CO2 figures with other vehicles tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including the accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load. There is a new test used for fuel consumption and CO2 figures (known as WLTP). The CO2 figures shown however, are based on a calculation designed to be equivalent to the outgoing (NEDC) test cycle and will be used to calculate vehicle tax on first registration. The range of figures stated covers the entire Volkswagen Golf model range including all-electric, hybrid and petrol/diesel vehicles. All-electric vehicles are zero emissions while driving. Hybrid vehicle figures were obtained using a combination of battery power and fuel. For more information, please see www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/wltp or consult your retailer. Data correct at 12/19. Figures quoted are for a range of configurations and are subject to change due to ongoing approvals/changes. Please consult your retailer for further information. Official fuel consumption figures for the Golf model range in mpg (litres/100km): Combined 0 (0.0) - 141.2 (2). Combined CO2 emissions 0-164g/km.
