Introduction
Welcome to your January Issue So, here we are in 2021 and a warm welcome from us all. Never before have the words of American columnist and author, William E. Vaughan, sounded so appropriate than right now. He declared, “An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.” Well, I’m sure we can all call ourselves pessimists then, as we wave farewell to 2020 … and not before time! We’ll all have plenty of memories of the past year, hopefully not all unhappy ones, but I think it gave us all the opportunity to just reflect on what really matters to us in our individual lives. We do take so much for granted on a daily basis, so maybe 2021 will give us many occasions to think more of other people, worse off than ourselves, who battle on with their lives, regardless. I hope your 2021 will bring you all happiness and an eventual reprieve from the Covid-19 stranglehold.

This month sees the inauguration of the forty-sixth President of the USA, Joe Biden, but it’s to the words of one of his predecessors, Thomas Jefferson, that we now turn. Bearing in mind the ongoing horrors of the last nine months, who could argue with, “I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past” as a fitting farewell to 2020? Much is still to come in terms of a successful programme of vaccination, but hopes are high that an end might be in sight. The same could be said with the prolonged Brexit saga, of course, but I’ve resolved to keep clear of fantasy fiction this year! This month, there is an optimistic feel to a lot of what our regular contributors are offering, and I would echo those sentiments as we all look forward to happier days ahead. Just in case your Christmas cracker jokes weren’t too special, surely they were better than these two … Production was down at Santa’s workshop this year, when several of his helpers had to elf-isolate. We had fun playing “Dominic Cummings Monopoly” – just ignore all the rules, move anywhere on the board and never ‘Go to Jail’. Enjoy the read!

Tam’s Tanning and Toning Salon Now Re-opened and Soon to Become “The Beauty Box”
L
ocated in Manor Way, Deeping St James, Tam’s Tanning and Toning Salon has now re-opened after what has been a nightmare of a year for most businesses, especially those in the health and beauty sector. Now that we can all look forward to a happier 2021 with the welcome news that vaccines are becoming available to combat the deadly Covid-19 pandemic, it is not too early to start looking ahead to the summer and where we might be spending some of our wellearned leisure time in the open air.
Those beautiful beaches on faraway destinations could well be available a few months from now, so why not make your New Year’s resolution to get yourself ready for the summer by visiting Tam’s Tanning and Toning Salon? This already well-established salon will, later this month, become “The Beauty Box” where, besides the tanning and toning tables, customers will also have the opportunity to have their nails and eyebrows given the full professional treatment as “The Beauty Box” establishes itself as your local ‘one-stopbeauty-shop’. It is an exciting time for this friendly, family-run operation, so why not treat yourself to a more beautiful future by seeing what “The Beauty Box” might have in store for you?

The New Year is Upon Us; It’s Time to Get Your Ducks in a Row!
I
BY MATTHEW BIGGS – FINANCIAL PLANNER
t’s January, the dust has settled from the festive period and it’s time to start doing some of the jobs we have put off doing in the lead-up to Christmas and New Year’s Eve. You have probably had an annual statement come through from your pension provider, or a reminder that your insurance policy is due to expire and have popped them onto the pile in your kitchen, not to be looked at until the next one comes through the door. But maybe, this year, you will set aside some time and finally read through the letters that have been sent to you. We believe the best time of the year to do this is at the start, as it will set you up for the year and also take some weight off your mind early on. We also appreciate that you might not

fully understand all of the information you have been given, and that financial planning can easily become very confusing, so why not come and talk to us? We have a team of highly qualified, experienced and friendly financial planners on hand who are able to assist you in understanding any information you might have, regarding your existing arrangements, but will also be able to help guide and support you through all the various areas of financial planning, from ‘Retirement and Protection’ planning to ‘Wills and Estate’ planning. If you would like to make a start on getting your ducks in a row, then please contact the office on 01778 342291 to arrange a FREE initial consultation with one of our financial planners.

them unique. Portugal is so much more than just The Algarve. Madeira and The Azores make great winter break destinations. As you journey across Portugal, you will find everchanging flavours that have been influenced by, and continue to influence, the landscape in which they were found. The vineyards of Madeira and the bustling fisheries of the Azores, the olive groves of Alentejo, these individual flavours each tell a story of their region.
This prestigious award is voted for by customers, so I’d like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of my customers for your support in 2020, and I look forward to helping you with your travel plans in the coming weeks and months too. I’ll be there for you every step of the way, keeping your safety and wellbeing at the heart of everything I do
Thanks to the current position on the UK’s travel corridor list, there’s no need to delay a winter break to the Azores or Madeira, without the need to self-isolate at either end of the journey. Whether you are looking for a winter break or a fabulous beach summer holiday, get in touch and I’ll be happy to talk you through the flexible options available for your Portuguese getaway.
21 Ideas for 2021 - Portugal Given that the last few months have largely consisted of staying at home, our thirst for new experiences has never been greater. Travelling to a destination with a strong cultural identity allows you to envelop yourself in a new way of life, enjoying all the flavours and customs offered.
You can make your plans safe in the knowledge that, should circumstances change, I can flex your arrangements to alternatives without penalty to you. Keep well and safe, and please give me a call or drop me an e-mail for more information.

• Tightly pack the spinach in to a measuring cup. • Add the spinach to a blender with the water. Blend together until all chunks are gone. It should resemble green water when blended well. • Add the pineapple, mango and banana to the blender. Using frozen pineapple and mango chills the smoothie down and saves time cutting and prepping. • Blend it all together until smooth and creamy. Depending on your blender, this could take as little as thirty seconds or as long as two minutes. • Pour into a glass and serve immediately to enjoy!

What’s Happening in January at Vine House Farm Citrus fruits are at their best this time of year & our favourite is the blood orange. Smaller than other varieties of oranges with a thick skin, often with a reddish hue. The inside flesh can be dark pink or even dark blood red, which gives them their name. Blood oranges are usually slightly sweeter than regular oranges so makes tasty freshly squeezed orange juice
ON THE FARM... South Lincolnshire is often referred to as the country’s ‘vegetable basket’. Our own harvest season is nearly at an end, but the big vegetable growers in this area harvest for 52 weeks of the year

WORDS FROM THE
Mayor of Market Deeping
COUNCILLOR JOSHUA YARHAM
Wonderful news – the United Kingdom has approved a vaccine!
N
ormality is on the horizon for so many of us in The Deepings with the rollout of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine and Astra Zeneca’s in the pipeline. Professional and family life have taken a monumental hit during 2020 and I thoroughly welcome the news that interaction, travel and frivolity can resume once again in the near future. The local healthcare network is working hard to implement the distribution of the vaccine to those most vulnerable. Please be assured that invitations will be sent out as quickly as practicable for those eligible. In normal times, December is a time of reflection on the previous year and what one looks forward to achieving in the forthcoming year. The Town Council has achieved many things despite the restrictions put in place with various lockdown measures. It is warming to see so much support for community events, such as the Remembrance Services in November, and also the anticipated support for Carols Around the Tree on Christmas Eve. We have completed works on the Spinney and the playpark on John Eve Field; massive projects that required significant investment for the benefit of all residents. 2021 looks to be a similarly successful

year after December’s Full Council Meeting ratified the precept planning that has taken place over the previous months for the 2021/22 Budget. I, along with other Councillors, feel passionately about supporting local businesses as much as possible, especially in these times of acute hardship, with Lincolnshire remaining in Tier 3 for the whole month. The measures risk livelihoods and local businesses falling between the cracks without significant support. I urge those that require any assistance to get in touch with the Deepings Business Support Group, who will be able to find appropriate assistance in these trying times. I support the work done by Sir John Hayes to obtain a commitment from the Health Secretary to consider South Lincolnshire separately from the rest of Lincolnshire. It is such a large county that the same restrictions cannot be practical or appropriate. Whilst measures did not change on the review date (December 16th 2020), I am confident that future communication and strong arguments will persuade the Government to approach this county’s restrictions in a more “granular” fashion. Let us all maintain working together to combat COVID-19 so that life in the Deepings can return to normality as soon as possible. I wish you all good health and a prosperous 2021. JANUARY 2021

Meanwhile, in Deeping St James, there was a Chestnut Horse, next to the present bakery in Church Street. This latter pub was already old and wellestablished in 1820, when a new landlord announced he intended to brew his own ale and provide beds for travellers. In 1833, while Thomas Smith was licensee, it became involved in a local drama. “Three unprotected females” were driving from Deeping to Bourne, when their horse-drawn vehicle was deliberately rammed - apparently for a lark - by two men in a gig, who then drove away and left them stranded with a broken wheel. An anonymous letter was published in the Stamford Mercury, inviting the men responsible to leave their names at The Chestnut Horse and be challenged to a fight with fists or pistols. The alehouse continued to trade until 1908, but soon afterwards it was demolished, and Chestnut House was built on the site in 1915. Market Deeping’s Black Horse pub acquired its name in the 1780s when a horse-dealer took over as landlord. It had previously been known as The George. Later, John Motteram, a saddle and

harness-maker ran the premises for over forty years, hosting dances and “sumptuous dinners” in a large club room at the rear. By 1909, trade had declined, and it was closed down by the Licensing Authorities. The building remains at 52 Church Street and has been converted to a private house. The White Horse was a late starter, first opening its doors in 1823, when horse-dealer William Medcalf took on the tenancy, after being landlord of The Bull Inn. While he was riding home from Peterborough one dark evening in 1834, he was attacked by two men. One grabbed his bridle and the other knocked him off his horse, then they rifled his pockets of about ten shillings, but ran off when the Lincoln mail coach appeared. The pub gained business from people travelling to horse fairs at Lincoln and Horncastle, and the cattle sales in Deeping. There were extensive paddocks at the rear, stretching back to Godsey Lane, where drovers could graze their animals. In later years, circuses and fetes were held in the grounds, with regular dances and musical events in the White Horse’s assembly rooms. In the 1950s, upstairs rooms were used as additional classrooms, when nearby schools could no longer house the growing number of children. It still keeps going after almost two hundred years.

Your Garden
January Gardening Tips
J
anuary is one of those months when there is so little to do on the allotment or garden as, more often than not, the soil is either frozen or waterlogged and should generally be left. However, you can still finish winter digging, weather permitting. Well-rotted manure or organic material can be added to the soil surface and it will become incorporated naturally. Also, a good idea when you are digging is to apply lime to the surface at 100g per square metre (3oz per square yard) especially if you grew brassicas the year before. Getting the soil prepared now will save time feeding later in the year and will often enhance crop growth and yield. If you have a greenhouse, cloches, or space in the house, then now is a good time to plant a few seeds ready for the planting out season. Onion, leek, tomato, chilli and aubergine seeds are a few that can be planted now to give them a good start. At this time of year, rhubarb can be forced: what could be tastier than pale pink sticks of rhubarb harvested in late February? Firstly, dig some manure around the roots and then cover them using pots or an upturned bucket, making sure any holes are covered to completely cut out the light. To speed up the process of forcing, you can also insulate the pot by covering the outside

of it with straw, bubble wrap or old carpet. Crowns which have been used for forcing should not be harvested in summer or in the following year, because the forcing process weakens the plant and the stems will not grow as strongly. Towards the end of the month, seed potatoes should be available and you can start chitting them ready for planting: put them rose-side uppermost and use old egg boxes or seed trays. Other jobs include: • prune apple and pear trees but not stone fruits such as cherry and damson; they should be summer pruned. • plant bare-rooted trees and bushes. • support Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli. • protect plants from cold and check stakes and ties. • start a ‘bean trench’ by digging down about 60cm, add a layer of newspaper and then start filling it with your organic kitchen waste. Each time you add a batch of waste, cover with a layer of soil: continue until the trench is full and leave it to rot down. And if the weather is foul, sit by the fire with a cuppa, or other warming beverage and plan for the year ahead, read gardening books and order from seed catalogues. Happy 2021...let’s hope that it’s a fruitful one!

Something to Shout About!
E
very town has a variety of styles of estate agent, from the soul-less “corporate” agency, driven by figures, to the one-man band; from arty-contemporary to ‘pushy-salesy’. Each type tends to appeal to a specific sector of the property-owning community, and rightly so – buyers and sellers alike need to feel comfortable working with an agent that reflects their own values.
BY PAUL BRIGGS
our values are more likely to be a reflection of our own aspirations. If you were to analyse the approach that we take to estate agency and business generally, you would find us to be highly personable and empathetic to the needs of our clients; that we have time to listen with interest and that we believe in providing straight-talking, good advice that is responsibly realistic, rather than insincerely flattering. Yet our focus is always on your success. Ultimately, it comes down to transparency and integrity, which are the cornerstones of our business. When combined with the passion we also have for results, the balance is a unique and enjoyable service, of which we are extremely proud.
So perhaps it is time we actually spelt out exactly the type of approach we strive to adopt. Certainly, many have commented that our office design and website have a pleasant contemporary feel but what does this actually say about the people behind the business, and how would this impact on you as buyer or seller?
It follows that when we employ staff, they also mirror our values and quickly share the same sense of pride. Indeed, our very low staff turnover rate is a reflection of a ‘happy ship’ – something on which many of our clients have commented. Sometimes, when you feel the formula is right, it does no harm to shout about it a bit!
As an independent agency, we have the flexibility to adopt whatever approach we feel is of greatest benefit to our clients. Without the constraints of corporate standardisation,

e hope you had a relaxing Christmas break, filled with happiness and treasured memories. Looking back at the previous year, we would like to say a huge thank you to all our valued clients. It is because of your loyalty that we have been able to survive as a small general practice, and continue to provide our community with a range of valuable legal services. 2020 has been a very strange year for all of us. Covid-19 has taught us many new things, from doing our grocery shopping online to connecting with friends and colleagues virtually. During lockdown, we have been inspired by people renewing their love of the outdoors by taking
walks and bike-rides, improving their homes and gardens, and - most importantly - showing their solidarity for the people who have been working tirelessly to get us through this time. However, the past year has been hard for all of us, having lost the personal touch which is so important to so many people. Not being able to see our loved ones, visit care homes or hospitals, or attend weddings or funerals, was a new and unexpected challenge, and one we hope will soon be over. So, as we enter a new year, our wish is that things go back to the way they were, but that we approach them with a new-found knowledge of how fragile we all are; that we appreciate what we have; and that we continue to support our families, friends and neighbours. Wishing you all a very happy and healthy 2021.

Will & Probate Services
“I haven’t got anyone to leave it to!” ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING DIRECTOR AT WILL AND PROBATE SERVICES
E
ach year at this time I would normally write about the importance of making a New Year’s resolution and taking the time to write your Will and put your Power of Attorney in place. I would also wish all of my readers a very happy new year, and of course this year I wish you exactly that … I hope that your 2021 will be better than 2020 was. But just before Christmas, something happened that is very rare. I was called in to administer the estate of a gentleman who had died without any relatives and without having made a Will. Now I’m sure many of you will have seen the TV programme “Heir Hunters” and you have marvelled at people who have received huge sums of money from long-lost relatives that they didn’t know. But sometimes there are no long-lost relatives and all of our efforts to find an heir come to nothing. So, what happens then? Well, in fifteen years of doing this job there have only been two occasions when we couldn’t find anybody, and consequently the entire estate defaults to the government, to the Treasury to be precise. This gentleman was the second of those cases. Now, it’s not that he was a lonely man; it’s not that he didn’t have friends; it’s not that he wasn’t
active in his community; the estate that he left behind defaulted to the government because he didn’t take the time to write a Will! I’ve spoken to his neighbours, and they have told me that he was really active in the community; he was a supporter of his local Age UK group and he was a passionate fundraiser for his local air ambulance. In an ideal world, he would have wanted to see his money go to them; my guess is that he would have shared his wealth with some of his friends too. But he didn’t. It just went to the Treasury, and the Treasury will spend it how they see fit. There’s nothing that compels them to spend it in the area in which he died; to research his likes and interests. Most likely, it will just go to pay off some of the interest on the National Debt. So, you’ll see that making a Will is important for everybody, whether you’re trying to protect your family, making sure your assets don’t get taken by your local authority, or even just ensuring that your money doesn’t end up in that government pot. Everybody needs a Will. If you want to make yours, you know what to do – just give us a call on 01778 382723 and book a free no obligation consultation.

WINES:
Choosing a Mix
F
or this quest I searched for a range of wines, with each production having an alcoholic content typical for the type and a bouquet, from delicate to medium level, which entices to the pleasures that follow. Irresistible Sauvignon Blanc (13% vol), from Chile, is a very popular choice for many white wine lovers. Crisp and fresh, to the mouth’s delight, I found this to be impressive and perfect to accompany a lot of cuisine, including fish dishes, seafood and salads. The impressive Gavi Broglia (13.5% vol), from Italy, brings thoughts – and flavours – of white fruits to mind, for this dry, smooth wine. Again, being crisp and refreshing, this is a very popular selection. For a rosé production I was drawn to Incarnade (11.5% vol). This Pinot Noir wine, by Sainte Marthe, comes from France. Sainte Marthe is to be found on the hillside of an ancient volcano. The terroir, plus much knowledge and expertise, combine to produce this excellent, light and refreshing wine. Great to pair with fish and meat dishes, as well as salads. Red wines are often chosen, and Uruguay produces a splendid Tannat Merlot (12.5% vol). The Finca Traversa production certainly ticks all my boxes, with grapes being grown close to the Atlantic Ocean. Juicy red fruit flavours are in abundance. The superb mouthfeel continues
38

on to a greatly appreciative palate and extended finish. Beef and red meats are regularly paired with this wine. Spanish red wines are also chosen regularly and Bobal Extreme (14% vol) does not disappoint. The vineyards are at a height of 1,100m which is an ‘extreme’ altitude for grape growing. Dark fruit flavours complement this organic production, wonderfully.
Trevor L a n g le y
If sparkling wine is a favourite, Italian Pizzolato Organic Prosecco (11% vol) comes through amongst the leaders. This extra dry wine adds ‘something more’ to a dining occasion or event. By itself or to accompany cuisine, this crisp, refreshing production has a very good perlage and a memorable finish. I located these wines amongst excellent ranges at a Co-op store, where I also found knowledgeable advice. If Co-op membership is of interest, customers can be rewarded for purchases and products. The Co-op is also committed to supporting Fairtrade. www.coop.co.uk www.infofairtrade.net JANUARY 2021

by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades When January rolls around, why not include your home (which has been working hard for you all year) in your New Year resolutions? While Safe Local Trades has members across many disciplines, (painting and decorating, plastering, electrician, kitchen/bathroom ďŹ tting, carpentry, handyman, carpet/upholstery cleaners, window/ conservatory ďŹ tting etc) many are already reporting 15:38 bookings up until March 2021. Many tried and tested traders will be busy, so don’t delay in getting in touch to secure a slot. Some projects, like a new kitchen for example, may be subject to a longer lead-in time; there is the quote to agree, designs to ďŹ nalise, products to order and then securing the availability of a great kitchen-ďŹ tter. Equally, if you are looking to sell your home come January, then time is of the essence if you require some property pick-me-ups and to stay ahead of the game. Interestingly, according to research, a downstairs loo, built-in storage (like wardrobes and cupboards), UPVC double glazing, a lawned garden and separate shower cubicle rank in the top ďŹ ve home improvement features to attract buyers. But what do you have planned for the New Year? Here are a few jobs to think about – and Safe Local Trades has someone to ďŹ t every bill in the Peterborough, Stamford, Huntingdon areas and the wider ‘PE postcode’. • Most things get worn out or look tired eventually, and carpets and ooring are no exception. Replace them or give them a new lease of life with a deep clean. • Painting and decorating – make 2021 the year you give your home a bright, fresh look. • Home security – protect your property with CCTV or intruder surveillance/security alarm systems/PIR external lighting. • Garden landscape and maintenance – think ahead to the summer months. Give your garden a spring makeover and get your project booked in now to beat the rush. • Extending your home - whether you desire a conservatory or a new home ofďŹ ce or study. • Window cleaning – add some sparkle to your home, even in the winter months, with bright and gleaming windows and doors.

Resolve to Keep Your Home Safe in 2021
I
wonder whether or not you have made any New Year’s Resolutions? If not, I think you should, and one of them would involve checking the electrical safety of your home.
After a particularly tough 2020, where our motto had always been, “Stay Safe”, I want you to really think now about keeping your family safe in other ways. Most people that I speak to for the first time have no idea that you are supposed to get your home tested at least every five years.
BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
a gas safety inspection every year, but many people may still not know what an EICR is. It is an Electrical Installation Condition Report. The ‘BS7671 Electrical Regulations’ recommend testing an installation every five years or at a change of occupancy. And, if you are a landlord, you will (hopefully!) already be aware that this is now the law for rentals, and you MUST provide your tenant with the certificate. We have client ‘help-sheets’ available which explain the benefits of having an EICR and what it involves.
This is to check the integrity of the electricity cables and to make sure that you have all the relevant fault protections in place, and to make sure that everything is safe and meeting the relevant regulations.
If you would like us to send one over, just send us an e-mail to Enquiries@altoelectrical. co.uk and say what sort of installation it is (rental/owned/business/church) and we will send you the relevant help-sheet.
Often, people are aware that you need to have

An ‘Inspirational’ Decade for Deeping Dance Group!
‘
Inspire Dance’ based in Market Deeping celebrates ten years in business this month. Amy Hunnings set up the school in January 2011 at The Green School in Market Deeping and then moved full-time to The Deeping Community Centre in 2013, where they are situated today. Inspire Dance provides lessons from ages two to eighteen in ballet, tap, modern, acrobatics, street, lyrical and musical theatre.
Amy explains, “As a family-run business, we know how important support and trust is and we make sure those values run through everything we do. Everyone involved with the school is part of the Inspire Dance family. Ten years is an enormous achievement, and we are so grateful for all the students and families and local businesses who have helped and supported us during this time.”
They are proud to only employ fully qualified teachers in the most respected syllabus (‘ISTD & Acrobatic Arts’) in the world. All levels of ability and involvement are encouraged, from the child who just wants to do one class a week all the way to the one who dreams of performing on the West End; there is indeed something for everyone!

Pets and Vets
Brexit, Pet Passports and Rabies!
O
ne thing that most of us are looking forward to when we achieve normality after this Covid-19 pandemic, is going on an overseas holiday. However, we now have the giant hurdle of Brexit to get over and the red tape surrounding this. We know that the rules around the Pet Passport are changing and British Pet Passports are not going to be allowed for travel through the EU as they were before.
Instead, an Export Health Certificate is required from your designated vet and certain criteria must be passed in order that one can be issued within ten days of travel. As I am writing this, the final stages of the negotiations are taking place and the finished details have not been signed off so, in such a fluid situation, it is vital you read the guidance from the Government website before planning any trips with your pets. However, we must remember the reasons why that legislation exists and why it can be complex. Rabies is an old and feared virus and has been around for thousands of years. It doesn’t just affect our dogs but also wild carnivores, ruminants and bats as well as humans. The reason it is so feared is that, once symptoms begin, there is no treatment, and it is
100% fatal. Over 55,000 people die of rabies world-wide every Wise Words By Deirdre Wilson year. The virus is passed from an infected animal in its saliva. If it bites or licks another animal – or person – the virus hides in the muscle for a few days, then travels up the nerves to the brain. This is a slow journey and can take weeks or months, even up to a year, and which is why animal quarantine is for six months. Once rabies reaches its destination, progression of the disease is rapid, and death occurs within ten to fourteen days. The animal’s personality alters; confident animals become shy and nervous. It causes hallucinations and animals often attack randomly – a very convenient behaviour change to ensure the next victim is bitten with infected saliva. Finally, it causes paralysis of the throat and, as the animal cannot swallow, it froths at the mouth. Death is caused by suffocation, as the muscles used for breathing become paralysed. A very nasty disease indeed! Britain (and a few other islands) has been rabiesfree since 1902 although there have been a few isolated instances. If it gets loose in our own wildlife, then the results will be devastating. So, the legislation around protecting our island from rabies must be thorough and robust. Remember too that Eire is in the EU and travel to Ireland will be affected by the new legislation. Perhaps, in the short term, even if travel restrictions due to Covid are relaxed, it may be better to leave your pets safely at home until we are sure that our countryside and our people can be safe from another deadly virus. A happy and healthy 2021 to every one of you and your pets from all at Alder Vets.

School News
Deeping St James Community Primary School
A
ll at ‘DSJ’ hope you had a great Christmas where, hopefully, you had the opportunity to spend time, either virtually or in person with family and friends. Christmas at school was very different, with productions and concerts being performed in front of a camera, rather than with a live audience. The video was then put on to a secure part of our website for parents to enjoy at home. We also sent out some Christmas Cheer to residents in some local care
homes and Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough. A positive that has come out of the pandemic is that I think most of us have learnt some more computer skills, with regard to ZOOM and Microsoft Teams! As we start the Spring Term, I’m hoping that by the time Easter comes and, before then, the roll out of vaccines, life will begin to show some more signs of normality and it will then be very much … a Happy New Year!!!
assistance in the local community, please let me know. Take care and keep safe and a Happy New Year from all at ‘DSJ’.
As always, if we can be of any
Thanks, Ian Wilkinson.
Baston C of E Primary School This year our Key Stage 1 children have used a ‘Green Screen’ to film their Nativity performance. Year 4 have been learning about teeth in their science lessons this term. Forest School lessons have included Year 4 using clove hitch knots and square lashing to make map quadrants to understand “bird’s eye view” in maps. In Year 6 this term we have been looking at different types of bridges and constructing our own in Forest School. This is a picture from our “Suspension Bridge Week”.
Market Deeping Community Primary School Following on from our recent story, we are delighted to say that our male teachers successfully grew some excellent moustaches for “MOvember” and raised a whopping £420 for Addenbrookes Charitable Trust - £120 above target – in thanks for their care of Mr Abrahams, our Year 6 teacher, during 52
his treatment for cancer last year. A full video is available to watch on the school website: www.mdcp. org.uk – and the link to our Just Giving is still there if you would like to donate to this excellent cause. Thank you so much to everyone for supporting us!
