Welcome to your May issue... We can honestly say that this year’s April’s winds will certainly have shaken, what Shakespeare called, “the darling buds of May”.
A
pril has seen one warm day of sunshine followed by hail stones and freezing temperatures the next. Roll on summertime! However, many people this year seem not so bothered about the weather, but rather just how wonderful life will become once this lockdown is over.
Inside Highlights
At the time of writing, it’s touch and go whether the hairdressers will be able to cope with the accumulations of lopped locks of hair, or whether our pub gardens will be anything like big enough for everyone clamouring for that first “out of lockdown drink”.

Sad news of the gentleman in Scotland being refused service in a post-lockdown pub, just because he did not have a smartphone to order food and drinks on an app. “I thought it was really ageist, because they should know that people of my age can’t use this sophisticated equipment,” said David Walters (78). I suppose one consolation for us all, if this trend of everything becoming “tech-reliant” continues, will be a peaceful scene where, not only will groups of people sit glued to their screens in silence, but there won’t even be the need for anyone to shout, “Oy, five more lagers here, mate!” Finally, when I was asked to explain what my job as an editor actually involved, I was able to reply, “Well, to cut a long story short …”

HOME ENTERTAINMENT AND DOMESTIC APPLIANCE SPECIALISTS
E
Big name brands, small store service, competitive prices!
stablished in 1983 by Mr Kelley Shipp, Kellyvision is located in Broad Street, Whittlesey near Peterborough. This proudly independent firm has since built up an enviable reputation across the region by meeting its many customers’ changing needs from televisions, videos and audio equipment to all domestic home appliances, including built-in as well as free-standing items, and now has a range of kitchens on display too. As big names on the High Street, such as John Lewis in Peterborough, are feeling the dire consequences of the economic downturn in retail activity, and some are even being forced to call it a day, there could now exist genuine opportunities for the likes of Kellyvision to move into the space left behind. Director, Lee Cochrane, is in no doubt that the smaller independent supplier like Kellyvision has long been able to hold its own against tough competition from both the larger organisations and the ubiquitous internet. “People don’t realise that we can match the Currys PC World and John Lewis price tags and also provide the friendly advice and recommendations, so important when comparing models and specifications”, he explains, and then adds that Kellyvision is also ready, willing and able to deliver and install their merchandise. Originally selling audio visual products, Kellyvision then expanded into “white goods” i.e. cookers, washing machines, refrigerators, toasters and kettles – in fact, everything you may need for the home. They are an authorised specialist dealer of Sony for home entertainment, and stockists of Hotpoint, Indesit, Smeg, Siemens, Neff, Bosch, Samsung and Liebherr, both freestanding and builtin appliances. They can also provide certified gas appliance removal and connection, together with free site surveys for aerial installations.

“Many customers are making investments in their own homes rather than moving,” explained Lee, “ so, as kitchen appliance sales grew vastly, it was a natural progression to offer our full kitchen design and installation service too.” Kellyvision not only offer competitive prices but an after sales service that is unrivalled. Many items are held in stock for prompt delivery and, as members of one of the largest buying groups in the UK, they are able to access a much larger range of makes and models, if required. Their sales staff receive regular product training to offer their customers informed choices and, having recently won the Sirius Buying Group Business Retailer of the Year 2020, the Retailer of the Year at the Fenland Business Awards and Best Small Independent Retailer from the Independent Electrical Retailer Group, Kellyvision pride themselves on exceptional customer service, quality products, excellent prices and superb service, so why not visit Kellyvision’s Whittlesey store? Located at 26-28 Broad Street, Whittlesey PE7 1HA, Kellyvision is open Monday-Friday from 9am4.30pm and Saturday from 9am-1.30pm. T: 01733 208787. Time for Solar Panels and an Electric Vehicle Charging Point? Contact the Experts: Cawoods Electricians
F
rom a fuse change to a full rewire, new house electrical design and installation to complete industrial complex, Cawoods electricians have the expertise to ensure your electrical installation is safe and compliant. Based in Peterborough and established for over fifteen years, Cawoods is very much an evolving company, eager to embrace new technologies in the electrical and renewable fields.
Solar PV (photovoltaic) Systems Cawoods have designed and installed solar arrays in numerous locations around the UK, for domestic, commercial, agricultural, and community projects, and are now looking to bring to this region, more so than ever before, the enormous benefits to be gained from the installation of solar panels. Cawoods quote, supply and install the systems themselves, and the vast majority of their work comes from existing customer referrals. They can also offer maintenance, fault finding, repair and support for any solar PV system.
or wondering whether you are overloading your home’s electrical supply. Cawoods will advise you on the type and positioning of your charge point and install a dedicated electrical circuit, as well as discussing any additional sockets you may want to have installed. Solar PV Integration Driving an electric car that is charged by your solar panels is an excellent way to ensure your transportation is both cost-efficient and emissionsfree. Many electric vehicle owners think of the purchasing a solar system as pre-buying their fuel for the next few years – at a cost that is very quickly repaid. With rising energy costs and the everincreasing prices of public charge points, it makes perfect sense to charge your vehicle at home for free. A typical 4kWp residential solar PV system will produce enough energy to power both your home and charge your electric car. Financing Your Project Cawoods Electricians have partnered with Kandoo, a regulated credit broker, to offer all their customers a range of highly flexible finance options. Kandoo is a comparison service that searches to find you the best Personal Loan or Secured Lending option that’s right for you. Details can be found via the Cawoods’ website www.cawoods.net/finance
Special Offer Cawoods are eager to bring you the many benefits of their expertise in this exciting field of electrical renewables. Let Cawoods install a solar PV 4kW array (8-10 panels), battery storage and a free electric vehicle charging point, all from as little as £164 per month, (inclusive of VAT), with no deposit required.
Battery storage is a “must have” addition to any solar PV system and, as such, Cawoods are proud to be Certified Installers for Tesla Powerwall 2. They can also install other battery solutions from VARTA and LG, for example. Installing a solar PV system is not only a sound investment, it will also shelter you from ever-increasing energy costs, and reduce your carbon footprint. Home Charging Electric Vehicle Points A personal charge point for your home makes charging your electric vehicle faster, safer and more convenient. No more extension leads, worrying about plug connections outside, 32 6

by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Imagine the scene... summer is just around the corner, lockdown continues to ease and you are ready to welcome friends and family for some alfresco dining or a garden gathering. But some of your property’s exterior is looking a little tired, your outdoor space 15:38 needs some “TLC” and you have good intentions of getting someone in for the job before welcoming visitors back into your home. And then, as luck would have it, a leaflet drops through your door with details of that landscaper, driveway professional or guttering replacement company you have been looking for.
Call John for a free quote / home visit
However, all may not be as it seems. While many companies who ‘leaflet drop’ may be genuine, there are many rogue traders who use this method of advertising and their leaflets are getting very sophisticated. In fact, some are printing leaflets and including details of genuine companies to make themselves look honest and reputable. The leaflet shown above, which was shared by the police, is a genuine company but the phone number was fake and was redirected to a mobile number. The victims of this particular leaflet were mostly elderly, lured by the “special rates”. Remember: • Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment.

Property News
Introducing... Lee Jeffrey, Sales Director at Adepto Homes
H
aving been an estate agent in Peterborough and the surrounding areas now for twenty years, I feel I can bring something different to the market-place, importing all the good I have learned along the way into Adepto Homes. I also live in Deeping St James and have a passion for the area and find it easy to sell the great things that the Deepings can bring to potential buyers. I think estate agency has changed so much and I believe it’s not just about being the local estate agent in Deeping and reliant on a local market; a much wider range of buyers across Peterborough is now looking to move locally. I have also seen a lot of home movers looking to move to the Deeping area as we sell their homes in Peterborough. At Adepto Homes, we pride ourselves on the full service of helping people find their next property, as well as trying to sell their existing one. We are an estate agency with a unique and bespoke way of selling property. We work with the latest software and tools that enable us to truly work remotely, whether this be from home or even the car, but have the professional setting of an office in Thorpe Wood. We help vendors through every step of the process, from the initial property valuation to marketing, sales and completions. We have not taken away the traditional values of customer service, but we have added the more modern approach to bring estate
agency into the twenty-first century and be less ‘old hat’. Our team have an amazing forty years’ experience in the estate agency and property industry. We have all seen a lot of changes in the housing market over the years and are exceptionally customer-focused and dedicated to the industry. We use modern methods of keeping in touch with vendors and buyers, including WhatsApp groups and top-ofthe-range systems and technology to access and process data at the touch of a button. If you are currently on the market and interest has stopped and you need a different approach, or you are interested in finding out more information about us at Adepto Homes, or looking to sell or buy a property, please call us on 01733 973013; we look forward to hearing from you.

More Defibrillators for our Area Can you help?
BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
W
hen I was approached recently and asked to install a defibrillator, I felt honoured to be asked, and jumped at the chance. Russell Hamilton from Nassington Heart Safe Community contacted me and, even before he had the chance to fully explain what he wanted to do, the answer was already “Yes”! Russell had no idea when he contacted me that my son has a heart condition, and just a few years ago had life-saving open-heart surgery. After his surgery, he went on to have “episodes” which, in an adult, would be classed as a heart attack. As it is so rare for children to have heart attacks, it is not well researched enough for the doctors to diagnose it is a “heart attack” though. So, when I was given the opportunity to use my resources to help, I felt happy to contribute towards a cause so close to my own heart, plus speaking to Russell is so inspiring. An ex-paramedic, with a doctor for a wife, they are so passionate about making defibrillators more accessible. You can find out more about what they are doing at www.NassingtonHeartSafeCommunity.org. It had me thinking about the defibrillators near me. Are they accessible and are there enough of them? If one of my family members were to have a heart attack, would I know where to go? No, I wouldn’t … would you? That very day, I found out where our nearest unit was and made sure my husband was aware too, giving him directions and describing what it looks like. Some are kept hidden because they are seen as ugly, which is such
a shame as the time spent looking for it could be the difference between life and death. It also had me thinking that, as a communityfocused business, we help as many charities and projects as we can afford to. I want to help to try and get defibrillators so they are accessible to everyone but, as a small business, we can only do so much. I would love to know if anyone has any ideas on how we can help get this rolled out across our towns and villages. If you have any ideas, please e-mail me on enquiries@altoelectrical.co.uk, put DEFIB in the heading so I know that it is in response to this article, and hopefully, we can do something together to make the local area a safer place.

The Private Property Rental Market
Thinking of Purchasing a “Buy-to-Let” Property?
T
his can be a great way to boost your income, whilst still protecting your capital. Over the long-term, property prices have always risen so, providing you keep a property well maintained, your outlay should be secure for the future.
ADVICE FROM ANDY PELLING
An old property with “character” may capture your heart but buy with your head! An older property may suit an owneroccupier keen on DIY but might be a maintenance nightmare for a landlord.
However, bear in mind that the property sales market can fluctuate, sometimes significantly. Also, your buy-to-let may be tenanted on a fixed-term lease so, if you think you may need to release the money at short notice by selling the property, this may not be the option for you. If you are in it for the long-term, the income can be significantly better than many other forms of investment. As an example, from our personal portfolio, a property purchased for £105,000 seven years ago is now worth around £165,000 and has produced an average yield* of 6% after costs. (* yield is the income per annum as a percentage of the capital outlay). If you think a buy-to-let may be for you, here are a few tips on getting the right property.
If you are looking at an older property, consider carefully the cost of keeping it all in good order. At the other end of the scale, brand new is also not always ideal. There are often snagging issues and, after two or three years, you may get drying out and shrinkage cracks. We get a disproportionate number of issues with leaking conservatories, old/cheap boilers, leaks from shower enclosures or shower screens over baths, and fragile garden fences, so check any of these carefully. To let out a property, it must currently have an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rating of E or higher. It must also have a Gas Safety Inspection and a “Satisfactory” Electrical Installation Condition Report. 26 Letters are more than happy to give free, no obligation, advice if you are thinking of purchasing a buy-to-let property.
As a general rule, the yield is slightly better on smaller properties, so two small properties may be a better bet than one large one. You may be able to get a bargain “out in the sticks”, but will tenants want to live there? At the budget end of the rental market, tenants may be reliant on public transport. Tenants with families may want to be near schools and shops.
Well maintained properties wanted in and around the Deepings area. Full management only 8% and no VAT.

Mortgage Advice
Protecting Your Home and the Ones You Love ADVICE FROM LUCA PALUMBO, MORTGAGE & PROTECTION CONSULTANT
B
uying a property is always said to be the biggest purchase any of us will ever make and, for many of us, we create memories and families and call these properties “home”.
We generally go to great lengths to look after anything in the property with buildings and contents insurance; we have mobile phone insurance and pet insurance, and rightly so as I choose to make sure my pet cats, Ned and Ralph, are fully insured. We will make sure all our tools are protected in the garden shed but the one thing we tend to neglect is ourselves! We do not realise that what is keeping our houses warm and making them a home is us, and we all know if we just keep working and paying the bills that will be the case, but what if something one day was to stop you? What if the cash machine (us) just stopped dispensing money? If the past twelve months have taught me anything, it is that anything can happen when you least expect it, and one of the most important aspects of my job is to make sure that everyone I speak to is aware that we can advise you on how to make
sure you and your family will be able to weather any storms ahead. A whole range of insurance types is available, whether you are a homeowner or not. These products are there to protect you if you are too ill to be able to work in the short, medium, or even longer-term. They are there to protect you against serious illnesses such as cancer, heart attack and stroke, and in the sad event of someone passing away. The discussions I have with my clients are to show them how to protect their home, themselves, and the ones they love, should the worst scenario happen to them. The misconception is that these policies are either too expensive, not needed or not worth the money you pay for them. The question I always ask my clients to consider is, “How much are you worth over the next twenty, twenty-five or even thirty years? Now weigh that up against the cost of the policy to protect what you are worth to yourself and your family. You don’t buy life assurance because you are going to die, but because those you love are going to live.”
*Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage*

WORDS FROM THE
Mayor of Market Deeping
COUNCILLOR JOSHUA YARHAM
On Friday April 9th, we all heard the sad news of the passing of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
T
he Town Council sent its condolences on behalf of all residents of Market Deeping to Her Majesty, the Queen and the Royal Family. As the longest
serving Prince Consort, Prince Philip dedicated his life to supporting Her Majesty and to public service. The nation has lost a loyal and dedicated public servant. The funeral took place at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, on Saturday April 17th and it was a sight to behold the love and support Prince Philip generated and earned. From Monday April 12th, it was welcome news and a very happy sight to see some retail and outside hospitality ventures reopen once again. Normality is slowly but surely resuming in all of our day-today lives and I hope that personal responsibility

will be at the forefront of the decision-making process to implement further easing of restrictions. The Sanctum Project is now in its final stages of completion and the surrounding gardens look especially welcome as spring arrives. Further, the playpark on John Eve Field is fully renovated and the BMX Track is soon to be resurfaced, as and when necessary. All committees have met for the last time before the AGM of the Town Council in May. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor positions will be voted on for another year, as well as the chairs and members of the various committees. It is set to be a full agenda with ample vision and progress in mind to utilise the Town Council’s resources efficiently. I hope that you all stay well and healthy through the improving weather and “impending freedom” from Monday June 21st. MAY 2021
Creating a Lawn to Love with Green Thumb
W
ith warmer, longer days now with us, the beautiful bright colours of your garden are best enjoyed alongside a lush, green lawn. As the centrepiece of your garden, GreenThumb Lawn Treatment Service will ensure your lawn reaches its full potential as a weed-free, healthy, and well-loved lawn.
● We recommend a regular mowing regime, preferably on dry, sunny days, ensuring your mower blades are kept sharp to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. Cutting grass too short will weaken it, attracting unwanted weeds. When dry, raise the height of your cut from one inch up to two inches and give it a good drink the day after mowing. ● Keep your lawn healthy and strong in preparation for the rising temperatures, increased humidity, and reduced rainfall; this is where NutraGreen ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment can
help. Applied between April and June, it features a fully coated fertiliser designed to give your lawn a timed release on nutrition over several months, feeding your grass, stimulating growth and including weed control. ● The ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment includes an application of the water conserver, Oasis, an innovative, highly concentrated seaweed extract which provides better colour, stronger roots and much less need for watering. Let’s create for you the lawn we all love! Contact your Bourne GreenThumb branch today on 01778 426730 or e-mail bourne@greenthumb.co.uk.

“Discovering Bourne” Pays Tribute to Bourne Historian
Rex Needle
It is almost ten years since the “Discovering Bourne” magazine first appeared and, in that time our readers have had the opportunity to discover so many of the town’s stories from the past.
T
his has been almost entirely due to the extraordinary work of former Fleet Street journalist and Bourne resident, Rex Needle, whose first contribution for this magazine was on the town’s Red Hall in September 2011.
In January 2016, Rex was invited to share his opinions with readers of “Discovering Bourne”, as the incumbent in our “In the Hot Seat” feature. The following extracts may shed some light on the man who was to become one of Bourne’s favourite ‘adopted sons’:
Sadly, Rex passed away on March 22nd , 2021, aged ninety, following a short illness, with his wife of fiftyeight years, Elke, and son Justin by his side. He leaves behind a grandson Anton and two elder brothers but, in terms of his ‘back catalogue’, one enormous collection of fascinating historical documents, books and photographs will be his legacy for the future.
✤ “I was born in Peterborough and spent many years singing with the church choir which gave me a lifelong appreciation of sacred music”.
As a result of his knowledge and enthusiasm for the Heritage Centre, housed in Baldock’s Mill on South Street, Mr Needle was made an honorary member of Bourne Civic Society. Brenda Jones, the Chairman of the Civic Society and a neighbour of Elke and Rex, confirmed Rex’s role in ensuring that Bourne’s fascinating past should be kept alive for future residents of his adopted town. Brenda explains, “He and his wife Elke would come to Baldock’s Mill most weeks to see what was happening and when the water wheel was being
34
built by Jim Jones (her husband) he took lots of photographs and he was one of the sponsors for Jim, when Jim got the MBE. He was a very generous man and gave his time freely. His website which was up and running for many years was read all over the world, especially by people who had left Bourne but still wanted to know what was going on in the town. He will be hugely missed in Bourne.”
Deepings
✤ “The army taught me a code of discipline that I have tried to follow ever since, notably a respect for others, neatness and punctuality”. ✤ (Finally, when asked what he would change about his town …) “Additional parking space, to help visitors and to boost trade for local shops, and a north-south bypass for the A15; otherwise, our town centre will become even more dangerous than it is now, from traffic fumes and heavy vehicles, which is hardly a suitable legacy to leave future generations”. Rex Needle … a man renowned locally for looking at the past, but here looking to the future!

Business Owners, Have You Planned for the Future?
F
BY MATTHEW BIGGS – FINANCIAL PLANNER
rom my experience of working with business owners, I know that hard work is second nature to them and, with the rare bits of spare time they find, they like to enjoy themselves and have some ‘down time’. In between the hard graft they are putting in and the infrequent time off, it is understandable that the thought of future business planning is way off. That said, I believe this needs to be a key consideration for all business owners and the last thing they will want to happen is to see all of their hard work disappear before their eyes, should something unexpected happen. That is why, whenever we work with a client(s) who is a director of a limited company, we will always expand the conversation to incorporate all aspects of business planning as well.
MAY 2021
What is business planning? If I asked you what would happen to your business if something unexpected occurred and you were unable to answer the question, then this is where business planning comes into place. We would consider what would happen if something meant you weren’t able to work for a prolonged period of time; if you weren’t able to return to work at all; if you lose capacity; and, most importantly, what will happen to your business in the event of your death. Some, or all, of the above considerations will come into play at some point for a business owner. If you feel you are unable to provide an answer for them, then please call our office on 01778 342291 to speak with a highly experienced and friendly Financial Planner for a FREE initial consultation.

Time to Start Loving Latest news from Deep-in Aesthetics’ Julie Higgins:
t’s time for us to look towards a return to sociable living. If you are anything like me, you will want to ensure that you look your best, after months of hiding away and not seeing anyone. We have all become accustomed to a more low-key look and feeling safe, not having to see anyone.
Through the dreaded FaceTime and Zoom calls, it has been easy to find fault in our physical appearance and to pick apart the features that you feel need improving upon.
that I wanted to have a few subtle tweaks to give myself a much-needed boost and to align my facial features with how I felt inside, as I have always felt younger at heart. As soon as I started having treatments, I felt an immediate confidence boost and I started to like what I saw in the mirror for the first time in ages. With no beauty or personal care appointments for what has seemed like forever, I am now so ready to book my treatments again and realise more than ever that I need to make the most of feeling good about myself.
With a little bit of antiwrinkle treatment or dermal filler, it is amazing the difference that it can make and the confidence it can give you in facing the world, whether that be with close family, friends or strangers. Everyone wants to look the best version of themselves.
Over the years of being in business, we feel extremely grateful to have been a part of many clients’ journeys in gaining inner confidence from their treatments, with their feedback being lovely to hear. Here at Deep-in Aesthetics, we have both the professional side in Alistair (a pharmacist with over twenty-five years’ clinical experience) and the personal side, which is where I come in.

“Seacations”
by Marika at Travel Counsellors
T
his new concept for 2021 involves the majority of cruise lines having created UK-based trips that will either be coastal sailings (where guests will remain on board throughout, enjoying the service and facilities that they know and love) or traditional cruise itineraries with stop-offs along the journey.
The ‘Summer Soiree’ sailings are from Portsmouth (with a total of six sailings this August). Three nights from £499 pp and four nights from £599 pp. in sea terrace (balcony) cabins.
P & O BRITANNIA AND IONA SAILINGS Britannia will sail the South Coastal areas and Iona will be doing a series of seven-night itineraries, covering the Scottish coastal waters and islands including Iona (no clients to disembark.)
The cruise lines have implemented a number of COVID-safe measures to reassure guests of the safety of their cruises. Some cruise lines insist on vaccination certificates plus a negative Covid PCR test for all over eighteen years of age. Some will accept all ages with a negative Covid PCR test. This is a wonderful alternative to a UK break, giving you the opportunity to try a cruise at almost the same cost as a UK break.
Britannia – Three and four nights from £449pp from Southampton, at reduced capacity and presently with only ‘ocean view’ and balcony cabins available. Iona – Seven nights sailings from £799pp.
MSC (MEDITERRANEAN SHIPPING COMPANY)
VIRGIN VOYAGES
MSC’s flagship MSC VIRTUOSA starts her maiden voyages from the UK this summer to perform her inaugural season around the British Isles.
New for 2021, Virgin Voyages are offering adult-only cruises for vaccinated UK residents, a brilliant staycation-at-sea, on board Scarlet Lady this summer.
Providing UK guests and their families and opportunity for a much-deserved all-inclusive, safe and memorable holiday. Prices from £499 for four nights and £849 for 7 nights.
A few inspirational ideas
Sailors will be offered a first taste of sailing on Scarlet Lady, which includes: Michelininspired dining experiences, luxurious spa treatments, unlimited fitness classes, entertainment featuring local British talent, and of course an adult-only sailing experience.
DISNEY MAGIC AT SEA UK sailings from July 15th are perfect for families with younger children or a break for an extended family, include the grandparents. For more information on these “seacations”, please give me a call or drop me an e-mail.

As he explains, “Our carers take pride in providing individualised care that truly benefits the service user. Spring is in the Air
at Fenchurch House Care Home
R
esidents at Country Court Care Homes have been celebrating springtime with a month of springthemed activities in their care homes. Each of their thirty-three homes has been taking part in activities with a different springinspired theme for each week, with prizes for the winner. In week one, residents enjoyed nature and wildlife activities, during week two they have been getting creative by writing stories and poetry. Week three saw some springtime baking and week four was all about preparing for the Easter weekend and decorating their home to mark Easter and the beginning of spring. At Fenchurch House Care Home in Spalding, residents enjoyed Easter-themed crafts including making cards to send to their relatives and friends. They have also been outside in the springtime sunshine making the most of their brand-new summer house to enjoy quizzes and games outdoors. They made their own Easter bonnets and had a fun afternoon choosing their favourite.

Congratulations went to Audrey for the best bonnet! “It’s been a long winter for our residents so we’re celebrating spring with some new activities for residents to engage with,” explained Suria Webb, Home Manager at Fenchurch House Care Home. “With springtime now upon us, it is the ideal time to feel hopeful and optimistic about the coming summer and gradual return to normal life for our residents”. For more information about Fenchurch House Care Home, contact Morgan Hicks on 07834 790 400 or e-mail morgan.hicks@countrycourtcare.com.
Country Court was founded in 1983 by Roshan Bogha and current Chairman, Abdul Kachra, with the opening of their first care home, Beech Lodge in Holbeach. The care home’s reputation soon grew, led by kindness, compassion and dignity. It remains a family-run business to this day, with the company philosophy, “Our family caring for yours” at the heart of every home.

Will & Probate Services
2021: The Year to Protect You and Your Family.
ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING DIRECTOR WILL AND PROBATE SERVICES
Powers of Attorney
M
ost people have heard the term ‘Powers of Attorney’ and some may have an idea of what they can do for you but, just like writing a will, most people have never got around to putting one in place. In fact, nine out of ten of you reading this piece won’t have Powers of Attorney in place! So, why should you have them and how do they protect you and your family? Put simply, it allows someone you choose to make decisions for you on your behalf if you cannot make them for yourself. If I asked you today who you wanted to make your care arrangements if you were to get dementia, you would probably tell me your spouse, or your children. I have never met anyone who told me “Lincolnshire or Cambridgeshire Social Services”, but that is the reality most people could be facing. If I asked you who you would want to pay your bills and manage your financial affairs, you would probably give a similar answer; you certainly wouldn’t say “The Court of Protection”. But again, that is the risk you run by not having a Power of Attorney in place.
Lasting Powers of Attorney are probably the most important documents that you could make. You do it once, and the two documents last a lifetime, hence the name. You choose who looks after you if you cannot manage, and on what terms. Because they affect you whilst you are alive, they are probably even more important than a will, but 90% of people still do not have them. If you want to protect yourself and your family from interference by the courts and your local authority, please get in touch and book a call with one of our consultants. When you do, be sure to ask them about the reallife experiences that we have had when trying to arrange things with and without a Power of Attorney in place. The differences are stark. Your first consultation is free, and you can get these important documents in place for as little as £400* for two Lasting Powers of Attorney, professionally drawn up with specialist advice, tailored to your circumstances, and done once and for all. (*Excludes Office of the Public Guardian Registration fee of £82 per document) Make the call today: 01778 252301.

Nature
A Local Walk Barnack/Southorpe – (3¾ miles)
1
Roadside parking by the church of St John The Baptist, Main Street, Barnack, PE9 3DN. No facilities, but there are a few benches along the route for a picnic.
2
Opposite the church, follow the footpath sign to the right of the old post office.
3
Continue along footpath between walls until you reach gateposts with the cricket club on your right. Do not go through cricket club but go round the ivy clad fallen tree and follow the footpath arrow right, keeping the trees on your left and the ivy clad wall to your right.
4
When you see a stone stile on the right, cross it and go straight over the field with a beacon in the middle and cross the next stone stile onto the road. Bear right for 50 yards.
5
At the cricket club entrance sign, cross the road and follow the footpath sign through the gate. Maintain direction with the high stone wall of Walcot Hall, on your left and the “Hills and Holes” Nature Reserve on your right.
6
Keep following the wall, through another gate. The nature reserve finishes, and you will have a field on your right.
7
Keep going until you reach the road. Turn left here, through both sets of gates and follow the hardcore footpath. There are often sheep grazing here. You are now walking on Ermine Street, a major Roman road. With thanks to Gilly Foot for having researched, walked and photographed the route.
Keep this direction with the stone wall on your left. You will pass a private gate into Walcot Hall where you will get a glimpse of the building.
8
Continue along the wall to a pedestrian gate beside a cattle grid with a yellow topped post. Go through the gate and continue along the gravel track. When the track turns left continue straight on, go through the next gate and continue direction through an open field along the grass track with a low wall to your left.
9
Go through the next gate, with a hedge to your left and continue direction through the next gate. Go across the field to an open gateway and follow the wall on your right to the gate by the road. Turn left and follow the road into the village of Southorpe. Walk through the village.
10
As the road bears right, carry straight on, through the gate, taking the footpath straight through a field to the next gate. Carry straight on over the next cultivated field to the road just to the right of the cottages ahead called Kennel Cottages. Continue straight on, through the gate on the right-hand side of the road by a tree and a bench.
11
Cross the field towards the yellow footpath sign which is at the lefthand end of the fence ahead. Walk along the fence line keeping the fence to your right and through the next gate. Go past Barnack Bowls Club on your left. You are now on a path which joins the path you left Barnack on. Turn left by the fallen ivycovered tree near the footpath sign, and down the footpath back to your car.

The Cranes are Back! News from The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust
E
xciting news from Willow Tree Fen, near Tongue End, is that the cranes that bred last year (the first cranes to breed in Lincolnshire since the 17th century) returned to the reserve in late January 2021. As a result, the reserve has been closed since mid-February and will remain so until this year’s breeding attempt is concluded. The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust regret having to deny public access to a reserve that is deservedly popular with visitors, especially during the current Covid-19 restrictions. However, cranes are extremely sensitive to disturbance, and any human access to the reserve is likely to result in the birds abandoning the site. Volunteer wardens are manning the reserve entrance from dawn to dusk to monitor the cranes and guard against disturbance and will try and point out the cranes, if visible, to anyone stopping by. Due to the pandemic, we cannot, unfortunately, share binoculars or telescopes. Trail cameras on the site have captured great images of wildlife including bitterns, otters and, (less welcome!) joggers and cyclists on the reserve having ignored the ‘closed’ signs at all the access points. If the cranes are to breed successfully again, we ask for everyone’s cooperation to avoid disturbance. As we gradually come out of lockdown, the Bourne Area Group hopes to be able (subject to government restrictions) to resume a series of outdoor walks from late summer, followed, in the autumn, by a series of indoor meetings. We will provide more details in due course through the pages of “Discovering Bourne”.

What’s Happening in MAY at Vine House Farm The countdown is over & our home grown, organic, asparagus is ready! Growing asparagus is a labour of love - each spear is harvested by hand when it reaches just the right height. Dubbed the Usain Bolt of the vegetable world, asparagus can grow up to 10cm in just one day. So versatile, you could eat it a different way every day of the eight week season. Asparagus and eggs are always a timeless Spring combination. Try dipping fresh spears into a softly boiled egg or make asparagus soup and top it with a poached egg and a drizzle of olive oil (make sure those eggs are free range!) ENJOY....NEW SEASON CARROTS Locally grown, new season, carrots are also now ready. There is so much flavour packed into their skins which is delicious complimented with a little butter & orange zest, or tarragon & thyme. They’re also yummy simply eaten raw.

Deepings Swimming Club is on the Hunt for New Members
B
ased at Deepings Leisure Centre, this very popular swimming club is looking for new members of all ages and abilities, from ‘Swim School Level Six’ upwards, including adults for its ‘Masters’ squad. Following the first trial on April 23rd, where Head Coach, Lynn Chapman, was assessing skills and fitness levels in order to allocate each swimmer to the correct squad, the next trial will take place in June. Please e-mail the club at deepings@ swimclubmanager.co.uk for details. “Swimmers must be confident in deep water and able to swim a minimum of 25 metres on front and back,” said Chapman. “We are a competitive swimming club, coaching swimmers from age six of all abilities through to national and international standard.” Since January, swimmers have been keeping fit through personal exercises, a national ‘V Swim’ series of land-based challenges and weekly workouts with Deeping Swimming Club’s land training coach, Claire Cross, who runs the local Spin Room Studio. They also enjoyed two Zoom presentations, one looking at the parents’ perspective of swimming with Debbie Wray, (former Deepings coach and mother of two of the club’s finest swimmers, Lauren and Alex) and the other from the swimmer’s perspective with
Happy to be back! Children at Market Deeping Community Primary School celebrated their return from lockdown by welcoming chicks from The Happy Chick Company into school. The children loved watching the eggs hatch and the chicks growing – spring is definitely in the air! The school also held a “Bad Hair Day” for Comic Relief and were delighted to hit their fundraising target of £300.

another former ‘Deepings great’, Isabel Spinley. “It has been a challenging twelve months, but we are delighted to be back in the pool,” said Chapman. “Our focus for the first few weeks will be on helping the swimmers to regain their full fitness and focusing on their skills. It won’t be long before they are ready to compete again.”

In 1906, Deeping residents signed a petition, asking the Parish Council to consider boring for pure water in the Market Place. Mr Noble was employed and, using his cutter powered by a steam engine, took out cores of soil and rock.
n 1880, there was a public meeting held in Market Deeping about the state of the town’s water supply and drainage. There had been serious cases of typhoid fever, due to wells being polluted by dirty surface water and sewage. Well water was especially impure in Stamford Road, the Market Place and High Street, where there were regular floods, and residents had to fetch their water from pumps elsewhere in the village.
He had to bore more than 100 feet deep before water gushed out, as shown in the picture. The water was piped along the side of the road in the Market Place and part of Church Street, where standpipes were set up for people to draw supplies.

the Market Place, as a memento of the boring. It was unveiled by the local MP, followed by a public luncheon in a marquee at The Bull. In the afternoon, a gymkhana was held, with sideshows and other entertainments, and the town’s brass band provided music for dancing. The clean water was greatly appreciated and a few months later, mains pipes were extended into Stamford Road and part of the High Street, and later throughout the parish. Despite the huge improvement in water quality by the 1930s, where general standards were higher, a Medical Officer of Health reported that samples of water in Market Deeping, including in the Market Place, were only “reasonably fit for drinking purposes.” After a modern mains system was installed, supplying water directly to houses, the drinking fountain became obsolete. There was increasing traffic through the Market Place, and when a central car park was laid out, the fountain, which had been so prized, was considered an obstruction and was removed.

Shoulder Injuries in Dogs
L
ameness in dogs is common. They are an active species and love to run, jump and play ball. Many of them are quiet during the week because of their owners’ workload and routine but enjoy a long walk at weekends and this is when they are most at risk of damage to the foreleg. Often, dogs develop a limp and stiffness that is worse after exercise. You probably would not have seen any initial accident or trauma but over time the lameness becomes worse. A possible cause is inflammation and damage to the bicipital tendon that holds the biceps’ muscle onto the shoulder joint. Tendons are thick bands of tissue that attach muscle to bone and allow the joint to move. If the damage is repetitive, such as having to jump in and out of the car and jarring the shoulder joint, the tendon becomes tight and painful and eventually scars. This will affect the longterm function of the tendon and your dog will always have problems moving the joint freely.
Dogs show stiffness and lameness and are reluctant to bear weight on the leg or hobble after play. Humans can also damage this tendon in their shoulder joint but, because they do not walk on their forelimbs, it causes a different type of problem.
Wise Words By Deirdre Wilson
Manipulation of the joint will allow your vet to localise the pain to the shoulder and orthopaedic injuries should be ruled out. X-rays are great at picking up bony problems, but because tendons are soft tissue, the damage does not show up on a conventional radiograph. Diagnosis of tendon injuries therefore requires more specialist investigation, such as an MRI. Initial treatment of these injuries involves rest, restricted exercise, and anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the damage within the tendon and provide pain relief. It may take four to six weeks of this treatment regime before the tendon returns to normal.
In more severe cases, it may take three to nine months of treatment. This would include physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to allow movement of the joint in a controlled manner and without having to impact the joint. Restricted exercise is still required, and that can seem a long, long time to keep your dog on the lead. Most types of dog that experience this kind of injury are the medium and large athletic breeds and those involved in agility or flyball. However, “couch potatoes” that are carrying a bit too much weight are also at risk from tendon injury. Therefore, weight control, as always, is especially important, but when your dog has recovered, try to avoid those activities that will cause the injury all over again.

Advice
What to Do If You Find You Have Bought a Fake or Counterfeit Item
F
irstly, there is the legal right to a refund. If the item was bought on, or after, October 1st, 2015, then people are legally entitled to a full refund on fake goods within thirty days of paying for them. If it has been over thirty days but less than six months since payment, the seller is legally able to replace with a real version of the item to replace the fake one, and if they cannot provide a replacement, they are legally required to give a refund (up until six months after it was paid for). If the item was paid for more than six months previously, people are entitled to a part-refund, depending on how long the item had been owned, and how much it had been used. It is harder to do this after six months, as people could be asked to prove that the item is a fake – in that case they should try talking to the real brand and asking them to inspect it. When seeking a refund, it is important for people to state they have a right to a refund under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, because the item does not match its written/verbal description. The seller of the items may argue that the items in question were obviously fake because they were very cheap. They can say a person must have known it wasn’t the real thing and use that as a reason not to give money back. However, they are breaking the law by selling fake items, and legal rights still apply. If the item was paid for by debit card, the customer should contact their bank and ask for a refund under the chargeback scheme. If paid for by credit card, with the item costing less than £100, the chargeback scheme can also be used. However, for an item paid for by credit card that cost between £100 and £30,000, the card company should be contacted, requesting a Section 75 claim to get the money back. For a Paypal payment, Paypal’s
online resolution centre should be used to report the dispute within 180 days of paying for an item. People can also report the seller to Trading Standards or report the seller for fraud. Trading Standards might take legal action against the seller, but they cannot help people to get their money back. Trading Standards investigate criminal activity and prosecute sellers and traders who break the law. People are not legally obliged to report someone selling fake goods, but it might stop other people accidentally buying fakes from them in future. As well as reporting them to Trading Standards, people can also report the trader to Action Fraud. There is no obligation to do this, but they will register the trader on the national fraud database, which helps to understand the scale of fraud across the UK. Report online at www.actionfraud. police.uk or call them on 0300 123 2040. Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire can help with this consumer issue and many others on 0808 278 7996.
