Welcome to your June issue... At last, hugging is now back
on the agenda, face masks are starting to become less evident, indoor restaurant and pub visits are now possible, (handy, bearing in mind our unpredictable summer weather!) and many families may well be tempted to consider overseas travel at last.
L
et us all hope that the damage, inevitably done to many firms, large and small, during the past year, can be repaired, and that our high streets can return to full working order, stronger than ever.
Remember that June 20th is Father’s Day and the opportunity to shower that special one with hugs and gifts. To my dad and to my husband Chris, who I love more and more each day, I send all my love. Keep healthy everyone and stay safe.

I was fascinated to hear recently how the coronavirus pandemic has apparently been affecting how new parents are being influenced when choosing names for their new-borns. Names with positive connotations such as Hope and Hero are proving popular, as are names linked to happiness such as Bliss, Joy, Blithe and Felicity. Indigo (as part of the “NHS rainbow”) and Florence (as in Nightingale) are right up there, whilst Cora and Rona are definitely “no-nos” right now – can’t think why! Finally, I was attacked last week by a man carrying a bottle of milk and a block of cheese – How dairy! Enjoy the read … and all those Father’s Day goodies! (Hint, hint!)

Why not make this
Latest news from Deep-in Aesthetics’ Julie Higgins: f the past year has taught us anything, it is that you have to make the most of what you have and not take anything for granted. We have all been through the mill and come out of this last and, dare I say final, lockdown, wanting to feel the best we can and to get that boost that we have been missing.
We have all been on those dreaded Zoom calls with friends, family and colleagues, and suddenly seen lines and creases that we never knew existed.
you are in safe hands and have the calmness and serenity here to be able to relax while we make you look the best version of yourself.
Here at Deep-in Aesthetics, we pride ourselves on our professionalism and extremely friendly service. We aim to make every client feel completely at ease so that they feel ready to take the next step in having the treatments without any worry or hesitation. We invite you to come to our new studio, where you will have complete privacy, knowing that
Alistair, an experienced pharmacist for over twenty-five years and who is fully trained in the aesthetics field, brings his knowledge and experience into the clinic. This is proven, time and again, by the outstanding five-star reviews that we have received both on yell.com and google.

Nature
A Local Walk
Market Deeping to West Deeping and Back (Approx. 6.9 miles)
1
Park in the “Long Stay” section of Market Deeping Shopping Centre carpark where there are toilets and refreshments available. Starting from the centre of Market Deeping, head across the bridge towards Peterborough. There is a public footpath sign on the far side of the bridge on the righthand side. Take this footpath and double back, keeping the bridge to your right and bear left onto the riverside path. Continue, keeping the River Welland to your right.
2
You will reach a bridge taking you under the A15 Deeping bypass. Continue under the bridge and follow the path back to the main river. The riverbank forks left; follow this path, again keeping the river on your right. After approximately ¾ mile, follow the yellow route marker and bear left, away from the river, along the side of a field.
3
Cross the footbridge and turn right. The building just in front of you on the right is Maxey Watermill.
4
There is a public footpath sign directing you into the grounds of the watermill. Follow this footpath and turn left, following the grassy path round the back of the watermill, keeping the watermill on your left. Continue over the bridge, with the watercourse on your left.
5
Bear right over a stile just before a gate. Walk down the right-hand field edge. Cross the footbridge/stile and bear right along the long field, passing close to the corner on the left, up to the stile and turn right along the road. With thanks to Gilly Foot for having researched, walked and photographed the route.
6
Continue over the bridge into West Deeping village and turn right into ‘The Lane’. Go past the gateposts into the courtyard of houses with a small green space in the middle. Follow the public footpath sign which is on a low fence, both the sign and the start of the footpath are quite hidden, the footpath is on the far left, between a fence and a wall beside a house. Walk along the footpath with the Stamford to Deeping canal to the right.
7
Eventually you will reach a wire fence. Turn left on the path between the fence and the hedge until you reach the A1175 (main Stamford to Deeping road). Cross the road and turn right on the roadside path. Cross the bridge over the canal.
8
Then either follow the road to the bypass, crossing carefully and carry straight on, back to Market Deeping.
9
Alternatively, turn left over the stile at the footpath sign. Follow the direction of the footpath sign, a right-hand diagonal path. Cross the stile in the hedge and keep direction over the next field. Bear right at the corner and walk up to the Deeping bypass. Cross this very busy road and follow the footpath through the gap and across another field to Millfield Road. Turn right and almost immediately left up a narrow path to Tattershall Drive.
10
Turn right to Stamford Road, then left, back to the centre of Market Deeping.
Please note: this walk will have muddy sections in winter.

Tallington Lodge remember Rachel’s award-winning Tea Room
A
s part of “Local History Month”, residents at Tallington Lodge Care Home, near Stamford, have been sharing some fascinating stories about their lifetime achievements and places where they grew up. Learning about residents’ lives helps staff to get to know them better, thereby enabling more personalised care and support. Tallington Lodge Care Home resident, ninety-nineyear-old Rachel Carrington, ran a successful tea room in Over Haddon, near Bakewell, Derbyshire. When she moved from Bakewell to the small hamlet on the edges of Lathkill Dale, in the late 1960s, Rachel realised there was an opportunity to cater for the many hungry and thirsty walkers who made their way up the hill from the dale below. In the summer of 1977, the ‘Lathkill Cottage Tea Rooms’ was born, and the Carrington family dining room was commandeered. Six months after opening, Rachel and partner Audrey entered the ‘Make Teatime Special’ Lyons Tetley competition with cash prizes and a stay, with afternoon tea, at the Selfridge Hotel in London.
8
Deepings
“I remember the judge came at 5 pm, right at the end of service,” said Rachel. “They had a full cream tea; they must have liked it because we won the regional competition.” Within a few weeks, they learnt they had won the third prize in the national competition, with the accolade: “Highly recommended, idyllic rural situation; food all freshly made; good atmosphere”. Inspired by Rachel’s story, staff at Tallington Lodge re-created the Lathkill Cottage Tea Rooms in the café at the Care Home. Led by Rachel, residents spent the morning baking scones and discussing their favourite cake recipes. In the afternoon, they enjoyed a full afternoon tea served on a vintage tea set, complete with lemon drizzle cake and chocolate brownies that Rachel was famous for. The Deepings Apache Cub Scouts Keeping Busy
T
he Deepings Apache Cub Scouts have been continuing their Scouting adventure despite the pandemic, virtually. In March, they held a virtual camp to celebrate and take part in the WWF Earth Hour – which encouraged Cubs to turn off their lights and electricity and take part in something without the use of power. As part of the camp, they also learnt about the need to reduce our waste and recycle more – learning about the different kinds of plastics we use and how these are recycled, as well as how long it would take for them to decompose, if not recycled.
The Cub group were out and about in the area surrounding the Scout HQ in Market Deeping. In just an hour and a half they had collected more than twenty bags of rubbish, with everything from old clothes to packets, cans and plastic bottles.
The impact of our excessive waste was identified by the Cubs who wanted to make a change, not just in their households but within their local community. So, when they were able to return to face-to-face Scouting following the Easter break, they decided to take action for Earth Day (April 22nd) with a “litter-pick”.
Scouting is a great way for young people to get involved in a wide variety of activities and also shows the power of what young people can achieve. The Cubs are hoping to put all their efforts towards their Environmental Conservation badge and have also applied for their Green Blue Peter badge. For more information about Scouting and how to get involved, visit Scouts.org.uk.

Greater Peterborough University Technical College Now Accepting Applications for Year 7 Students
T
he Greater Peterborough UTC (GPUTC) are now accepting applications for Year 7 students wishing to start in September 2021. They recently announced that, “Working alongside our new academic partners, the Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust (CMAT), we are finally able to share this outstanding news.” This means current Year 6 students with a passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) will now be able to join the school at an even earlier age, and the GPUTC will be able to deliver their specialist curriculum to even more of
Peterborough’s budding young scientists, architects, designers and mathematicians. A first for the wider Peterborough area, the GPUTC boasts of pioneering “Expeditionary Learning” which engages students in learning across multiple subjects. Through this scheme of learning, students complete in-depth research of authentic topics through a series of expeditions designed to enhance students’ knowledge and develop their research and critical thinking skills. Because the GPUTC has close ties with numerous sponsors in various fields of STEM, students who choose to join this institution will have
experts at hand to support their learning. Intake spaces will be limited to only sixty students. Principal, Mr David Bisley, explained that this is so that, “We can ensure that high quality academic rigour is delivered, alongside unrivalled care, support and guidance from our dedicated Year 7 team of teachers and support staff.” Besides this recent addition, the GPUTC are still taking applications for Year 9 and for their Sixth Form too. Application forms can be accessed on the GPUTC website: www.gputc.com and sent to admissions@peterborough.gov.uk.
For further information and/or arrange a private COVID-safe visit, please contact either the GPUTC Year 7 Transition Manager at headofyear7@gputc.com or the GPUTC admissions team at applications@gputc.com.

2021 Raft Race Cancelled
“
Update from the Committee
We would love to be able to tell you that the Raft Race will go ahead in 2021, but at our committee meeting in April we reviewed the latest government advice on events and had to come to the difficult decision that we would not be able to comply with the guidance. Because the event is held in an un-gated area, we have no way to control numbers or check for people that have been vaccinated or tested – as some events are suggesting.
Put this date in your diary though… 7th August 2021. The event can’t take place without the help of lots of people, some paid professionals, some enthusiastic volunteers, if you know someone who can help, please email info@deepingsraftrace.co.uk or call 07703 016 492.
We would not be able to enforce social distancing and we would probably not be able to insure the event. We have to take the responsible approach and put the safety of people first. We realise that this will be a great disappointment to our rafters, spectators, sponsors and especially the charities for whom we raise much-needed funds. We will be looking to see if there is some safe alternative activity that we could operate to try and support some of those good causes, so please keep an eye on our website and social media channels.”

Travel
International travel is opening up by Marika at Travel Counsellors
A
s June approaches, we are seeing some positive news, with some international travel back on the cards, albeit with restrictions. The new traffic light system lists countries you can travel to, and certain parts of Europe are starting to open up.
England, Scotland and Wales really are ‘your oyster’ when it comes to gorgeous places to stay, not least with their many private estates and country-house hotels in the heart of vast parklands where you can participate in wonderful outdoor activities. Luxury staycations are proving wildly popular this year, and hotels are now able to welcome us back, bringing with them fine dining venues (indoors!), superb gardens to explore, and spas where you can enjoy that much-deserved pampering!
Portugal, Madeira and The Azores are the current top favourites for a quick week away in the sunshine. Whether your plan is for a quiet or an active break, to chill out, relax and snooze in the sun, or to spend a week enjoying your favourite sport, I have some wonderful holiday ideas, and I can help you through all the requirements for you to travel, including what’s needed for you to leave the UK and what’s required to return here.
Are you looking for a really special day out? How about one of several day-long itineraries to classic UK destinations, aboard the Belmond, British Pullman train? These include elegant brunches, afternoon teas and fine dining, served up in its vintage carriages with their Art Deco interiors.
If you are unsure about travelling abroad, but would like to have a break this year, I have lots of options to choose from, right here in the UK, with hotels and B&Bs re-opening, everywhere except Northern Ireland.
As always, no matter when or where you’re planning on travelling, I can provide you with some inspiring ideas, something to look forward to, and I’m here to guide you through the changing travel guidance and requirements.

any of us have found ourselves walking more during the lockdown and, better still, have decided to keep up the habit. The supposed health benefits of consistent walks are well-documented; whether that’s more energy, sustaining muscle and bone strength, or even a greater sense of inner calm. Yet, despite this, if you haven’t got the right footwear, you may actually impede your progress “in the long run”!
Give Your Feet a Treat at Tallington Lakes Pro Shop!
We’ve all come to realise that the right footwear seems all the more important with the more you walk and, depending on the kind of walking you’re participating in, your choice of footwear can really affect your feet. So, any investment in the right shoe is definitely well worth it, whilst your “future-you” will thank you later! The team at Tallington Lakes Pro Shop can provide you with the answer to what style of shoe will truly fulfil your needs with their Boot Fitting Service. Since they reopened on April 12th, you can now come in store to chat with their friendly staff about taking the next steps in kitting your feet out correctly. It’s all too easy to make a purchase from the comfort of your home, but now that you can come to store, it’s best to try before you buy. The endless selection available online can also be daunting so, at Tallington Lakes Pro Shop, they have hand-picked the best for all ranges of
abilities and environments. If you’ve found yourself more comfortable running over differing terrain, a trail running shoe may be more suitable. If you keep to longer hikes, a boot would be ideal. Coming to store allows you to find your preference and style; while the Pro Shop’s staff can help you find the best fit for your feet and ankles. No matter what you choose, just remember to give yourself plenty of time to break them in, or your feet may pay the price! So, if you’ve “found your feet” over lockdown and are now scratching your head on whether leather or fabric footwear would be best, or if you’re weighing up breathability versus waterproofing, or simply don’t know where to even begin, then Tallington Lakes Pro Shop may be just the place for you. Tallington Lakes Pro Shop is open seven days a week, between 9.00am-6.00pm; call 01778 347000 for more information.

Super Steve Smashes 1,000 Miles in 100 Days to Support Sue Ryder Hospice
A
man from Bourne has recently smashed his target of running and walking 1,000 miles in 100 consecutive days – raising £3,145 for a local hospice. Steve Bills, who works in finance and is Manager of Bourne Town Football Club’s Reserves and Under 18s, was inspired to take on the charity challenge to remember his friend, Paula Turner.

junior football family, as a parent of a player, a main committee colleague and a very dear friend.
Paula, who was on the committee with Steve at Bourne Town Juniors FC as Club Secretary, had cancer and sadly died in December 2020. Come rain or shine, Steve laced up his trainers and stepped out for 10 miles a day for 100 days to raise funds for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough. Although Paula wasn’t cared for at the hospice, she had asked that any donations should be given to the charity so it could continue to help others. Steve’s 100-day milestone came and went at the beginning of April – and instead of stopping, he carried on with his challenge, clocking up the miles in and around Bourne. As of April 27th, he had completed an impressive 1,220 miles in 122 days. Steve explained, “Paula touched the hearts of many with her positive, friendly and selfless attitude to life. Over the last couple of years, her courageous battle against cancer was an inspiration to us all. I knew Paula as part of a very close 20
“The main purpose of my fundraiser is for Paula’s memory to go on and to raise a few pounds for a very worthy cause. I hope the funds raised will help to continue the fantastic support provided by the hospice, especially in these uncertain times. Thank you to my friends and family who have been so very supportive.” Helen Kingston, Community Fundraising Officer at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, said, “A huge thank you to Steve, his and Paula’s family and friends, and everyone from Bourne Town Football Club for their unwavering support of our hospice in Paula’s memory. We are blown away by Steve’s epic efforts. The funds he has raised will help us to continue offering our compassionate palliative care and bereavement support, and being there when it matters for other local families.

Stamford’s Celebrity Designer Wants You to Steal the Show! Anna d’Amato, the owner of ‘Anna Couture Boutique’ in Stamford, took the ambitious step in 2018 of opening ‘Anna Couture Brides’, a delightful property opposite The George Hotel on High Street, St. Martins. Barely two years since its arrival on Cheyne Lane, ‘Anna Couture Boutique’ had already become so popular, offering the latest stylish and glamorous ladies wear for all special occasions. Now the time was right to expand the business to become a beautiful design house, where Anna and her team of highlyskilled seamstresses now have room to work their magic. A costume design graduate with a particularly enviable C.V, Anna has years of experience in costume design for both television and film, with anecdotes galore! For instance, she was Madonna’s seamstress for a year during her 2006 “Confessions” tour. Anna explains,“During my time making Madonna’s corsets, I had to sew up a fishnet stocking of hers while she was still wearing it, which was terrifying, (my needle was millimetres from her leg!)” She has produced costumes for blockbuster productions, including “Star Wars” and “The Phantom of the Opera”, and has worked with Gok Wan.

Before taking on the new premises, a number of wedding dresses would have been sold, including some from Chanticleer, a top British bridalwear designer and manufacturer. The opportunity to buy the Chanticleer label proved irresistible for Anna and that prompted the expansion on to the High Street (literally). Anna had previously run her own bridal studios in North London and Gerrards Cross for many years, so her experience is vast. Furthermore, she has the trained expert’s eye to understand a bride’s vision for her wedding dress and then the skill to produce a breathtaking endproduct. The Anna Couture Brides premises contains work rooms and stocks of beautiful fabric, whilst Anna and her team are adept at ensuring that the bride-to-be will enjoy her memorable couture experience, as her dress design takes shape before her very eyes, or a gown is altered to fit perfectly. There can be little doubt that you’ll walk away feeling that your particular needs and wants for that special dress will be satisfied and that your wedding dress will have you feeling like the star of the show!

Local History
Deeping St James’s Lost Manor House
T
(KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE)
he site of The Deepings School was once parkland belonging to a large house which stood alongside Church Street. The property covered thirty acres, and in the early 1800s was the home of twice-widowed Susanna Greaves who lived in style, with a coachman, footman and maidservants. She bequeathed the estate to her nephew, Reverend John Mawby Cooper “upon express condition that he makes the mansion house his usual residence.” Mr Cooper was rector of a parish fifty miles away, but managed to retain his living and also comply with his aunt’s wishes. The Manor remained in the Cooper family until 1879 when Edmund Waterton moved in and named it Deeping Waterton Hall. He was a devout Catholic and converted stables into a family chapel. His father, Charles Waterton, was a renowned naturalist and explorer whose book “Wanderings in South America” is considered a Classic. A public house in Church Street was also part of The Manor’s estate and was re-named The Waterton Arms. The pub sign still shows the Watertons’ family crest with an otter carrying a pike in its mouth, and
their motto which translates as “Better a stranger who becomes a friend, than a friend who becomes a stranger.” After Mr Waterton’s death, his son advertised the estate for sale, and it was bought in 1894 by local MP, Lord Burghley. He became 4th Marquess of Exeter the following year and when he died in 1898, Queen Victoria sent a message of sympathy to his widow, Isabella. The Dowager Marchioness continued to live in The Manor and took an active part in church and village activities until her death in 1917. A Catholic Brotherhood called the Xaverians took over the property in 1919 and established St Francis Xavier School to provide a Catholic education for boys. The Principal, Thomas Wall, was known as Brother Cyril and during the 1930s he allowed the parkland to be used by Girl Guides and Brownies for garden fetes and for the village sports festival. By around 1950, the Xaverian school had disbanded and the building stood empty. In 1957, work started on the new Deepings School and it was officially opened by the 6th Marquess of Exeter whose grandparents had lived in The Manor. Houses were later built elsewhere in the grounds, creating Manor Way, Brownlow Drive etc. Although the Manor House is thought to date from the 1750s, a photograph viewing it from Church Street shows a disjointed group of later additions. It was not considered worth preserving, and was finally demolished in the 1970s. Modern, detached houses and gardens now stand in its place.

meant setting an example, laying down rules and guidelines for them, and being there for them when they needed advice and assistance. Letting them join in with what I was doing was important too, be that a bike ride, or being involved with organising the raft race; they often came with me.”
So, how close to that would you say you have been?
Nick’s career path began at Terry Wright Cycles at the age of thirteen, progressing through roles in the TSB and in insurance, before establishing Will & Probate (a paralegal law firm dealing exclusively with the issues that concern clients in later life) in 2005. He married his wife Marie, having met in the Venture Scouts at the age of sixteen, and “almost thirty-six years later we are still going strong”, he declares. A keen cyclist, Nick also lectures in law for Anglia Professional Training.
“If I am honest, I got better as I got older. When they were really young, Marie and I were both working fulltime, so we leaned on the help and goodwill of our parents. We have had our difficult times like most families, including the time I had to sack Tom when he worked for me. But we recovered and laugh about it now.”
How would your sons describe you and your record as a father?
Eldest son, Tom is the Sales Director for a tech start-up called Yuno, and lives in Chesterfield with his long-term partner, Amy. His brother, Jacob is a civil servant, who has just moved into his first home with girlfriend Valeria.
Nick, what do you think makes a “good” father? “When we had our boys, Marie and I integrated them into what we already did, so the boys accompanied us on our various adventures. At one point, we had a tandem with a child’s seat for Jake and a trailer for Tom. Being a good dad 28

“I asked them, and they suddenly became very shy, but I know from their girlfriends and others that they respect me and are proud of what we have achieved as a family. They definitely love me and are unafraid to show it. They ask for my advice and guidance … and sometimes even follow it!”
Finally, what would constitute the “perfect Father’s Day” for you? “That’s easy. A visit to the Care Home to see my dad (who is living with dementia and Parkinsons), followed by the six of us having a few drinks at the Waterton Arms, finishing with one of Marie’s excellent Sunday lunches, (roast pork is my favourite).” JUNE 2021

2021: The Year to Protect You and Your Family.
ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING DIRECTOR WILL AND PROBATE SERVICES
Having THE Conversation
W
hen you are planning for later life and ultimately death, there is nothing more important than communication. Three things that have happened in the last month convinced me that the best thing I could do with this page this month is to encourage you all to have a conversation with your family. The first thing was the Duke of Edinburgh died; it was sad but not unexpected as he was 99 years old. The BBC went into overdrive, a “Tier-One death” meant that all programming across all of the networks was pulled and the nation was plunged into a period of official mourning. I didn’t watch much of the coverage myself, but what I did watch had a recurring theme – The Duke had planned his funeral down to the last detail and had communicated it to his family, his staff and everyone who would have a hand in the day. Because he was so detailed, the day was exactly what he wanted, although the Queen did look very lonely at the funeral. The next thing had far less international significance but was one of those moments that really make you stop in your tracks and think. A friend of my wife who was diagnosed with a brain tumour a couple of months ago put a post on Facebook. The headline was “Booking a plot at my Green Burial Site” and there was a photo of her with her husband and daughters at the cemetery where
she was going to be buried with the tagline “not a normal family outing”. A real example of communication in the face of huge adversity, most people would bury their heads in the sand. Not my wife’s friend though; she has become the Duke of Edinburgh, taking control of her life and her death. I find her attitude humbling. The last thing is less positive. A client of mine died a few weeks ago and my firm is dealing with her estate, getting probate and disposing of her assets. The day after her funeral, I had a phone call from someone who I had never met or spoken to. He said to me, “I am your client’s godson and, shortly before she died, my godmother said I could have …” He then went on to reel off a list of possessions that he wanted from his godmother’s house. I had to advise him that most of his wish list had been gifted to other people in her will and that, as he was not a beneficiary of the will, he couldn’t have anything. I don’t know whether or not his ‘conversation’ happened, but I have my suspicions, but because it wasn’t recorded and her wishes said something else, the godson got nothing. It is not the first time this has happened, not even the first time this year. It is a regular feature of what we deal with when administering estates. So, have the conversation; be like my wife’s friend and the Duke of Edinburgh. When you have had the conversation, record it – we can help with that bit. If you need any help and advice, please call us on 01778 252301.

A Clarification
L
ast month, we included a “heart-felt” plea from Alto Electrical’s Coleen Everitt, entitled, “More Defibrillators for our Area – Can You Help?” In that feature, it was stated that one of the driving forces behind the Nassington initiative, Russell Hamilton, was “an ex-paramedic, with a doctor for a wife”. Mr Hamilton wishes to put the record straight, writing, “I feel it important to correct this as I wouldn’t want anyone to be misled. I am not a clinician, nor do I have any clinical training. I do however have extensive experience of working at a senior level in many parts of the NHS until I retired early. I am extremely proud of all of my public service including the part that was as an Ambulance Service Chief Executive. People in such roles do not have to be clinicians although they might, they are employed for their broader leadership qualities. My wife Karen is one of a number of clinicians in our family. She is a General Practitioner. It’s the combination of our experience that we’re using to create our ‘Heart Safe Community’”.

Consumer Advice
Using Tried and Tested Professionals is the Key to Locking Out Rogue Traders! By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades It seems that it is not only driveways, garden clearance and replacement guttering (to name a few) that are target areas for the cowboy builders and scammers. Another trade that has fallen foul of the rogue traders is locksmiths, as highlighted on BBC One's “Rip Off Britain” on May 10th, 2021. The trade is unregulated which means that anyone can buy a kit and then advertise themselves as a locksmith. According to recent surveys: • More than 800 complaints were made about rogue locksmiths over the past year. • In two thirds of cases customers are being overcharged by £200 or more. • In one example, a locksmith quoted a price of £49, but the final bill came to £1,604. Here are a few tell-tale signs that a so-called locksmith may be far from reputable: 1) Calls are answered by a call centre which makes it difficult to obtain details for the locksmith doing the job. This can also mean you don’t know who is doing the work as jobs are often subcontracted. 2) The company is ranked at or towards the top of online advertising listings. As they have paid to be there, this isn’t an indication about the quality of their work. 3) The locksmith is vague about their experience and they may be reluctant to provide feedback about previous jobs or recommendations. 4) Drilling is a method of destructive entry and is only used as a last resort when all other methods haven’t worked with cylinders. Many rogues start with the drill and this should ring alarm bells. Safe Local Trades are lucky to have our very own reputable and vetted locksmith as a member. Locksmith Doctor Ltd’s Gary Braesyde offers the key to a professional and successful solution, in more ways than one – with no call-out fees and no hourly labour – just good honest pricing and always going the extra mile for customers. Store his number 07539 154722 in your phone now, in case you need it for that emergency. Gary is now also offering a special offer – buy one and get another half price on all lock ranges. Financial Planning... The Liberty Difference
A
BY MATTHEW BIGGS – FINANCIAL PLANNER
new client is someone who typically has been introduced to us by an existing client and they have a need to talk to someone about a financial matter, such as their pension or how they can create an investment. We sometimes call this ‘the messy part’, anxiety levels may be riding high and confidence levels sometimes low; it can all appear to be quite daunting! Quickly, they will settle in, and it is the same as any new relationship where we get to know each other, and naturally confidence levels grow, and anxiety subsides. Immediately, the conversation will be broadened out into sometimes seemingly unrelated matters. We will be thorough and clear with you and if you do not understand these, often complex, matters then we will be patient, recap and explain again in terms that you understand. A pension or investment is simply a vehicle to enable you to plan in a particular way; they tell

us little though about your hopes and dreams, your family life, health circumstances and objectives for the future. This to us is all critical in our role as financial planners; we have to get to know you and to understand you in order to help build a plan for your future. We are confident that you will enjoy the process and that you will find it rewarding. We will get quickly through the messy part and we will work with you over the long-term to help keep your plan on track. You will be given all the support you need, and you will understand all that we will do for you…. Yes, we promise you will understand it all, even the complicated bits! So, take a moment to reflect on your own finances: What are your priorities? What direction are they heading in? If you are still not sure, then perhaps it is time to start creating your own financial plan, and we are certain we can help! Local School Sees Rapid Change
inchfield Community Primary is a mainstream school and pre-school, based in Deeping St James. The school officially joined C.I.T last September. The Community Inclusive Trust (C.I.T Academies) is a multi-academy chain that challenges and supports its academies to provide the highest levels of education and care for their pupils. The Trust currently has fifteen academies across the East Midlands. The Trust has been supporting Linchfield since May 2019. The school has made significant progress since, and the Trust continues to work with the Linchfield team to ensure further positive development of the school. Katie Brockington, an experienced Headteacher, has joined the team: “I am delighted to have joined Linchfield Community Primary School and Pre-School, and excited to have the opportunity to work alongside and support such a dedicated team of staff, fantastic pupils and parents, in such a lovely setting. I have been in the teaching profession for over eighteen years and have enjoyed a variety of roles and responsibilities, including Class Teacher, EYFS Lead, Phonics Lead, Assistant Headteacher and Headteacher. I have a real passion for learning, and I believe that all children should be given the opportunity to achieve their full potential, whatever that might be, and to be fully prepared for the next stage of their lives.” Katie and her team of staff, along with input from the pupils, have launched a new set of school values, and have revised their School Behaviour Policy.
The staff have been developing the learning environment at Linchfield School too, and have worked hard to ensure that the setting is welcoming, inspiring and motivating for everyone. The school values and celebrates the children’s work and provides the right prompts and resources to enable them to be independent and enthusiastic learners. The school now uses ‘Accelerated Reader’, an excellent system used to measure both children’s ability to read and their comprehension skills too. Katie added, “The pupils are thoroughly enjoying choosing their own books at their own level and quizzing on the books they have read to check their understanding. Our goal at Linchfield is to provide an outstanding education for our pupils. These are exciting times for the school.” Plans for the future include promotion of the love of reading, continuing to develop a stimulating learning environment and offering a full and varied curriculum to meet the interests and needs of all of the children attending Linchfield Community Primary and Pre-School.
Linchfield School Values
Little Linchfield PreSchool is now accepting places. Admissions for Linchfield Primary School will open in September. Pictured: Headteacher, Katie Brockington with children from Little Linchfield Pre-School

The Private Property Rental Market
As the Old Saying Goes, “Don’t Spoil the Ship for a Ha’porth of Tar”!
ADVICE FROM ANDY PELLING
W
e believe a thorough, detailed inventory is an essential for any landlord. Occasionally, we are surprised when a landlord with a property worth hundreds of thousands of pounds will query the merit of spending £50 to £150 (depending on the size of the property) for an independent inventory carried out by a professional.
thoroughly cleaned and wellmaintained, the logic being that if it looks like you don’t care about your property, neither may your tenant.
The detailed inventory, typically thirty-plus pages with dozens of photos, will document the precise condition and cleanliness of the property at the start of a tenancy. If furnished, it will also list all the contents. This will be signed off and agreed with the tenants, and will then be used as the base to compare the condition and cleanliness of the property at the end of the tenancy.
Benefits of a professional inventory: ● Both the landlord and tenant have an accurate
assessment of the initial condition of the property. ● The inventory will easily distinguish between
All tenants’ security deposits (sometimes referred to as ‘bonds’) legally have to be lodged in an approved scheme. Unprotected deposits can result in fines of three times the value of the deposit. We use the Deposit Protection Service (DPS). In the event of a dispute regarding damage or failure to clean by a tenant, the DPS who can arbitrate in such matters, or (in worst case scenarios) a court, are unlikely to side with the landlord if there is not a detailed inventory validated by the tenant within seven days of them moving in. This is one of many areas where a good agent can act for, or advise, a landlord of legal obligations and best practice to help protect both your income and your asset. Property News
Know What You Are Signing!!
I
t has long been said that you should always read the small print, but in the case of estate agents’ contracts, read EVERYTHING that is printed in the contract. Here are some areas that often catch out vendors, because they haven’t realised what they have signed up to with their agent.
Contract Lengths Has the length of the contract been made clear? In 2021, with a fast-paced market and housing selling within days, some estate agents are still tying people in for twenty-four weeks (most of the time without them knowing). In short, your agent is telling you that, potentially, they have lots of buyers and have sold lots of houses locally, but it still might take them six months to sell your home!
Hidden Costs Free photos, free floor plans and free virtual tours? This is often not the case though, as with some agents you will be hit with a bill of £300-£500 if you remove your property from the market. These are hidden costs and not necessarily explained properly at the start of the process, and most people will assume this is part of the fee they are paying when the work has been done and the property has been sold.
Online Options Internet agents are now more popular than ever and are very appealing to homeowners in a market where houses are selling quickly. The downside with many online agents, however, is that you will pay
Words by Lee Jeffrey
their fee, regardless of whether they sell your home or not; you will either pay upfront or on a form of loan agreement. With this, there is a chance that the property does not sell, but your agent will always get paid, so where is the incentive for them to proactively find a buyer for your home? In this scenario, the homeowner can be left with an unsold property and a fee already paid, but now with the need to instruct a second agent who will also need paying!
Choosing the Agent Do you go with the name you know? We are a new estate agency, and a name people are not so familiar with yet, but we come with a wealth of experience and knowledge of not only the industry and how to sell your home, but the local areas we market in. Like any service, always be careful with who you choose. The agent you call out may be a known name, but does the person sat in your living room or the one showing people around your home really have the knowledge to not only value, market and sell your home, because they have the local knowledge and have been doing the job for more than two weeks, but get it to completion? Poor pricing and marketing can cost you valuable time and money. In this industry, we seem to be in “a race to the bottom” in terms of fees with very little regard to how this affects service and the customer journey and ultimately their experience of selling their home; we’re trying to change that!

Mortgage Advice
Re-mortgaging - Why Now Might be the Right Time for You ADVICE FROM LUCA PALUMBO, MORTGAGE & PROTECTION CONSULTANT
I
n the economic climate we find ourselves in, many homeowners may be unsure about when is the right time to look for a new mortgage. It is a particularly important decision that could impact your finances by thousands of pounds every year.
Re-mortgaging is the process of getting a new mortgage on your existing property, either with your current or a new lender. The main reason to remortgage is to save yourself some money, but there may be other reasons too.
But before we look at the ‘when?’ you need to first consider the ‘why?’ • Is your current deal about to come to an end or has it already finished, and you have been moved to your lender’s costly standard variable rate (SVR)? •
Or are you simply looking to save money?
• Or do you want to release some of the equity in your home to make changes to it, such as renovations or adding an extension? • Or do you want to switch from an interest-only to a repayment mortgage? Whatever your reason for wanting to re-mortgage, it is important to obtain professional advice to see if re-mortgaging is the best option for you and to help you identify the best mortgage deal to meet your needs. There is no right answer for everyone, but here are three reasons why mortgaging now could save you money or make you money, over the long-term.
1. “I’m nearing the end of my promotional period.”
You have a fixed or tracker mortgage and you are coming close to the end of the initial promotional period (often two, three or five years). If you do not find a new deal, you will automatically revert to your lender’s SVR when your promotional period ends. This would mean higher monthly payments.
2. “I want to re-mortgage while property prices are rising.” Property prices have been rising in recent months despite the Covid-19 pandemic, and that can mean it is a good time to re-mortgage. Why? Because your loan-to-value ratio will be lower. In other words, the amount you need to borrow will be a smaller percentage of the market value of your home.
3. “I want to raise capital.” In some situations, you might want to borrow more against your home. For example, you might want to build an extension or carry out home improvements that will increase the value of your home. Alternatively, you might want to start investing in other property, or buy a second property as a “buyto-let”. Re-mortgaging could help you to raise the capital to do this.
*Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage*

Maxey Car Show Back After a Two-Year Absence
O
ne of the most popular regional car shows, the longestablished Maxey Classic Car and Bike Show, is to be held on Saturday, August 14th at the picturesque lakeside venue on Quarry Lane, Maxey.
taking place between 1pm and 3.30pm. Once again, the difficult job of judging the winners is being handled by national motoring journalists.
Organised by the Maxey Charity Club, which started in 2001, the event has become increasingly well-known over the years and continues to attract over 350 vehicles, which include a wide range of classics, exotics like modern Ferraris, kit cars and 4x4s. The classic motorcycle class, meanwhile, gets more popular each year. The show opens to the public at 11am, with judging
It promises to be a great day out for all the family, with live music from Paul Lake and “The Liquor and Poker” blues band; a real ale and gin bar; a barbecue and doughnut stall; a Raceway Scalextric and lots of fun for all the family. Admission is just £5, with free entry for exhibitors and under 14s. Our motto is “If you drive it or ride it and you love it, come along and show it”. There is no need to book your vehicle in - just turn up on the day. We’d love to see you there! For more information contact Gilly Chown on 01778 344476 or visit www.maxeyclassiccarand bikeshow.com.
Glinton Horticultural Society Needs Help! A heartfelt plea from Mr R. L. (Bob) Quinn: Chairman. Glinton Horticultural Society was originally set up in 1943 with a fete and gala in aid of the wartime Red Cross. Since that time, the Society has significantly contributed to the life of the village and the surrounding area, holding monthly meetings with presentations on a wide variety of subjects. A plant sale in the spring has always been much appreciated and well-attended by local residents. Trips to gardens of interest for which, up until a few years ago, there was easily enough demand to fill a coach, and a social evening held at Christmas with food and entertainment have been much enjoyed. All the profits from these activities have been put towards financing the considerable cost of putting on the Annual Show. The Show has always been one of the largest in East Anglia and has been held in Glinton at Arthur Mellows Village College for many years, with often in excess of one thousand entries from a wide surrounding area. All the activities of the Society have been organised by a committee which in the past has consisted of twenty to thirty active members. Over the last ten years, however, this committee has diminished in number to the current ten members, the majority of whom including myself are well over retirement age. 54
Deepings
Unfortunately, we are no longer able to provide the physical support needed to set up the meetings and the Show. Furthermore, a number of us are having to seriously consider resigning in the near future. This means that, without a considerable influx of younger, fitter members, the Society is no longer viable. In addition to this, a significant number of committed, physically fit volunteers are required to move tables and boards on the Friday and Saturday evenings before and after the Show. If you feel that you are able to help in any way, please contact me as follows. E-mail: r372quinn@btinternet.com Phone: 01733 252161 Mobile: 07711071110 It is proposed that a Special General Meeting, open to all, will be held in July to discuss the future of the Society. The time and the place of this meeting will be widely advertised. We hope to see you there! JUNE 2021

One of My Biggest ‘Growing Pains’ for the Business is Finding the Right People.
W
henever we have recruited new team members, we are extremely careful about finding the right people that fit into our team. As an employer, I work very hard to try and build a positive work environment; finding people with the right mindset is a huge part of that.
Come and join our fantastic team!
We have been very restricted this year, but we like to have ‘team building days’, where we may go and carry out some physical activities such as tobogganing, or raft building, or something mentally challenging, such as ‘the escape rooms.’ We have not been able to do much this year unfortunately, but we have our first activity since before lockdown booked in at the end of May.

husband and I often take our young children in the office with us. I believe that this is one of the key reasons for having this friendly, family atmosphere. We are welcoming our new Operations Manager, John, into the company this week, and we are very much looking forward to working with him and his extensive experience that will be able to help us to perfect our performance as a company and achieve more than ever before.
Job Opportunity We are looking to expand our team, so if you are, or somebody you know is, a qualified electrician, or would like to train to be an electrician, then the best way to apply is to send a CV and covering letter to Recruit@AltoElectrical.co.uk to be considered for a future with us.
I am very proud of the Alto team; they are genuine, kind, competent and professional. I know, like, and trust each and every team member. I would actually have no problem leaving them in charge of the baby if it was ever necessary, and any new mum will understand how much that means! Everyone at Alto is hard-working and has a positive outlook and a good sense of humour. We have a mutual understanding of trust and respect, something that is so important for any healthy workplace. We are family-oriented, and my

School News
Deeping St James Community Primary School
T
hanks to the generosity of United Charities and the fund-raising dynamism of the children and staff here at Deeping St. James, we have further upgraded our outdoor facilities for the start of this school term!
The importance of physical exercise – for the physical and mental wellbeing of all in school – has never been more prominent. Our children already enjoyed their ‘Daily Mile’ sessions, although they could be brought to a premature conclusion by the great British weather! Following the installation of an all-weather running track, around the perimeter
of the school field, all the children now have the opportunity to jog or run each day! The children find it the ideal way to begin their learning as it helps them to focus more readily on their work in class, whilst also providing an excellent additional social element to the school day. This has been something more important than ever, with so many of the children not having been able to attend school for the full year, due to the restrictions we have all experienced. The new track also allows us more flexibility for PE lessons and Sports Day, and is something the children at school here will benefit from for years to come!
Northborough Primary School Enhances Eco-credentials
N
orthborough Primary School is on a mission to enhance its school site by creating a naturefriendly outdoor space. Following the pandemic, schools have had to work in different ways, and the use of outdoor space has been key to being able to deliver both learning opportunities, as well as meet the mental and physical needs of students.
Mr Mallott, Headteacher at Northborough School, said, “It’s been great to see how the outdoor space has evolved to the benefit of the children.” Staff have also taken part in training so they can fully utilise their outdoor space for a wide range of activities which encourages students to learn about their natural environment.
With the support of PECT (Peterborough Environment City Trust), an environmental charity based in Peterborough, the school has recently planted 180 trees and a variety of wildflowers to help enhance their outdoor area and encourage pollinators to visit. Students have also built bird and bat boxes, created natural bird feeders and have started to grow their own food. 64
Deepings
Heidi Latronico-Ferris, Environmental Educational Lead at PECT, said: “All the students have really loved helping to create a sustainable area that they can benefit from in both their learning and in free play at break times. The school have also set up a ‘Planet Protector’ group and have started to come up with further ideas on what else they can do next. We are excited to see how their journey develops and how the school will take further steps in becoming more sustainable.” JUNE 2021
Phoenix Rises from The Wistow Maze
T
o mark a new beginning of hope and freedom, the award-winning Wistow Maze has been designed in the shape of a phoenix rising from the flames. The giant eightacre maize maze has a fun Quiz Trail hidden amongst its three miles of pathways, with high level bridges and towers giving stunning panoramic views. Visitors have to find twelve quiz boards which will test their knowledge on other mythical creatures. The maze is redesigned each year using GPS satellite technology, and at the end of the season is harvested for cattle fodder! “The phoenix is often used as a symbol of recovery and renewal, which seems very appropriate for this year”, explains Diana Brooks, owner of Wistow Maze. “With plenty of space, our maze offers great outdoor entertainment for young and old.” Visitors can also take part in a variety of mini mazes and games in the Activity Funyard, which includes
a space-hopper track, hoopla, beanbag throwing and a football shooting game. Across the road is the Wistow Rural Centre with its cafe, garden centre, art gallery, model village and numerous shops, making it a great day out for all ages. Wistow Maze is a winner of Leicestershire’s “Best Visitor Attraction” and attracts over 20,000 visitors each year. Open: Monday July 19th - Sunday September 5th (daily), then weekends only until Sunday September 19th. 10am – 6pm: Free Parking. Admission charges: Child £6.95, Adult £8.50, Family Ticket (2+2) £28 More information: Visit www.wistow.com or call 07884 403889 Wistow Maze is situated opposite the Wistow Rural Centre, which is signed from the A6 at Great Glen and Kibworth and the A5199 at Kilby. (Kibworth Rd, Wistow, Leics. LE8 0QF).
Did You Know? The phoenix represents the cycle of death, rebirth and renewed life. This mythical bird is a symbol of hope, immortality, resurrection, solitude, and grace. Just like the phoenix emerges from its ashes, so can man after devastation and loss. The phoenix gives mankind
hope and urges us to fight on. People have always associated the phoenix with the worship of the Sun. According to myth, only one phoenix exists at a time and lives for approximately 500 years. At the end of its life, the phoenix builds a nest using aromatic
plants. It then sets the nest on fire and is consumed by the flames. Out of the ashes, a new phoenix springs to life. When it’s strong enough, it flies the last phoenix’s ashes to Heliopolis in Egypt. There, it places them on the altar of the Egyptian Sun God.

Pets and Vets
Triaditis - “three in one”
I
f you enjoy the Garfield cartoons, you realise just how much cats and dogs differ: they eat in different ways; they have vastly different behaviours in the wild and that maxim also holds true for their diseases and treatment too.
One of those diseases is triaditis, a condition that only affects cats, not dogs. It is a condition where there are three simultaneous diseases – pancreatitis; inflammatory bowel disease; inflammation of the gallbladder and duct. We are not sure why this condition occurs, but it is thought that initial gastrointestinal disease causes inflammation within the bowel and this spreads to the nearby associated organs. The ducts of the pancreas and the gall bladder empty into the small intestine at the same site so they both have a higher chance of being inflamed when the bowel is diseased. The most common sign of triaditis in your pet cat is loss of appetite. Even if you offer them the tastiest morsel, they just turn their noses up at it. This is due to nausea, where the site and smell of food is very off-putting. We’ve all experienced that when we’re ill and can certainly sympathise with our cats. Some cats will vomit and there may be weight loss and a fever too. There may even be a touch of yellowing of the whites of the eyes if they have a slight touch of jaundice. There is usually pain in the
JUNE 2021
abdomen, but cats are very good at hiding even extreme discomfort and it is through a change in behaviour that we realise how sore they actually are. Most cats will want to be left alone and hide in a cosy, quiet corner of the house. Wise Words By Because it is a combination of Deirdre Wilson three diseases, diagnosis may need several tests including blood tests, ultrasound and even biopsies in chronic cases. Triaditis is a complex disease, and all three elements need to be treated and managed together. This usually involves a combination of antibiotics, pain relief and anti-emetics to control the nausea. Sometimes a cat which refuses to eat will need hospitalization for fluid therapy and may need the placement of feeding tubes as well. There may also be more unusual complications underlying the problem such as abscesses within the abdomen or even gall stones and these will need investigation also. Thankfully, most cats are tough and respond to treatment well, but if your pet is not eating and feeling rough, don’t delay getting help, as faster treatment means better recovery.

DIRECTORY BUSINESS FEATURE OF THE MONTH:
WINDOW CLEANING… AND MUCH MORE!
F
or a professional cleaning service, let Deene Harrold bring a fresh new appearance to whatever it may be that you want returning to a sparkling, ‘good as new’ look. For the past two years, trading under the name “SilverAce”, Deene has been building up an enviable reputation across the area with his wide range of services, using his award-winning, powerful, and top-of-the-range cleaning equipment. Windows, soffits and fascias are cleaned with pure water, for both domestic and commercial clients. Conservatories can also get the SilverAce treatment to leave that valuable ‘extra living room’ more appealing than ever. Gutters can often be neglected and, with a build-up of leaves and other debris, are liable to cause problems if left too long. Using the SkyVac system, Silver-Ace can give you that peace of mind which comes from knowing that the camera attached to the equipment shows an empty gutter. This system can reach
awkward places over conservatories and extensions, and is the world’s leading, most powerful, free-standing, gutter cleaning machine. Why not let Silver-Ace transform your driveway, patio and decking area, and how about cleaning the roof and getting rid of that moss? The list seems endless! All of the above are offered on a six-to-eightweek basis, if required; alternatively, ‘one-offs’ or fortnightly/monthly packages can be arranged. All work is carried out to an exceedingly high standard, and all within the present Covid-19 regulations.
SILVERACE CLEANING & MAINTENANCE ✓ Pure Water Window Cleaning ✓ Fascia Board Cleaning ✓ SkyVac Gutter Cleaning ✓ Office Cleaning
WE ALSO PRESSURE WASH ✓ Tarmac ✓ Block Paving ✓ Decking
