Welcome to your August issue... This month is a very special one for the “Discovering” magazines “family” as issue number 120 of our flagship, “Discovering Bourne” magazine represents the Ten-Year Anniversary of its arrival on the local scene.

I

n that time, the “family” has grown to five, (“Whittlesea”, “March”, “Wisbech” and “The Deepings” being the other titles) … and we go from strength to strength!

My own involvement with the “family” began in 2013 and it has been such an enjoyable, and at times rather hair-raising, journey which I would not have missed for the world. I get such an enormous feeling of pride as I see our five magazines evolve over the course of each month, knowing that our wonderful regular contributors, our featured clients, and our fabulous sales, administration, design, and editorial specialists have combined to bring you an inspiring, interesting and entertaining magazine, month after month. Finally, talking of “families”, our front covers this month feature the smiling faces of my sister Paula and her husband Steve, at their wedding early in July. Love and best wishes to you both xx.

Claire x

“Summer’s here and the time is right for dancing in the streets”, sang Martha Reeves and the Vandellas in 1964. Celebrations can follow (not football-related unfortunately!) and our family are doing just that, following the arrival of granddaughter #2 in July. It won’t be long before Violet Grace will be joining big sister, Nancy Rose, on the dance floor! Amongst all the recent shenanigans concerning the former Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, apparently the Secretary of State for International Trade was offering him her support – her name … Liz Truss! Enjoy this month’s magazine/sunshine/Olympics etc …

DERMAL FILLERS

New Treatments from Deep-

P

Following yet more training in London, Alistair and I are now excited to be able to provide two new skin treatments, Profhilo and Jalupro.

rofhilo is a unique, injectable skin treatment designed to hydrate, tighten and rejuvenate the skin in the face, neck, chest or hands. It is very similar to dermal fillers in that it is made from hyaluronic acid; however, its function is very different. Whereas typical fillers are said to be like jelly, Profhilo is likened to honey, and doesn’t change the shape of your face, but spreads evenly throughout the areas chosen, both hydrating and remodelling it from within. I was extremely excited about trying out the five-point-facelift that Profhilo is known for. This is where five injections are placed strategically either side of the face, taking minutes to do and with no pain at all. Even the day afterwards, I could tell there was something different about my skin, like it was glowing and tighter too, but it’s not until the second treatment that you can really tell the difference it makes. The second step is essential in gaining longerlasting results from the increase in collagen and elastin that it produces. The treatments are carried out four weeks apart, and the results are exceptional and can last for a year.

Whereas we use Profhilo for the five-pointfacelift and for turkey necks, we are also able to offer both Jalupro and Sunekos as alternatives to those areas that are more delicate and where there are fine lines or wrinkles to hide, such as smokers’ lines, backs of hands, under eyes, acne scarring and the chest area. Again, I was excited to try out the Jalupro treatment on my chest area which I have

Days Out at Baston hoy there, shipmates! Year 1 had a great day dressing up as pirates in Ferry Meadows. We made ships out of rubbish and natural materials, built shelters out of logs, and even got to go on a treasure hunt for pirate gold!

Year 2 visited Peterborough Museum to learn about significant individuals of the past. The museum was transformed into an infirmary and the children became trainee nurses for the day! The children met Matron Cavell and helped her to set up the operating theatre, before moving to the hospital kitchen and helping Eve Hall with a variety of chores such as making pastry. A brilliant day was enjoyed by all.

first trip away with school to the Stibbington Centre. The children explored their five senses by making environmental music, creating smelly cocktails, investigating camouflage and exploring contrasting textures. They all had a fantastic day! Year 6 pupils enjoyed a day at Stibbington as evacuees. This day out supported our World War Two topic, and included a tour of the village where the children from London were evacuated to during the war, and our children took on identities of real children from that time. They enjoyed playing playground games, taking shelter during an air raid siren and taking part in a lesson in the classroom in the old school.

The children in Reception were very excited to go on their 6

Going Up in the World?

C

Try Climbing!

limbing has seen a significant rise in popularity and recognition over the past few years as an accessible activity for any ability, whether that’s indoors on a wall or out on a cliff face.

With rock climbing featuring for the first time at Tokyo’s 2020 Olympics, and British climber Shauna Coxsey a firm favourite, the anticipation to see a rapid growth in demand for alternative climbing options, especially for those that are unable to get out “on the crag”, is high. This growing surge in those wanting to try climbing for the first time is in part down to its numerous benefits. Apart from the obvious physical advantages, there are opportunities for personal growth and development through climbing. Both mental and social wellbeing can be enriched, as climbing is a great way to meet new people and develop strong friendships; owing to the trust needed when overcoming obstacles or challenges that may arise. An added bonus is spending extra time in nature, and close to those mood-enhancing green spaces! Not only this, but because climbing uses the body’s whole musculature, instead of just one group of muscles like when running or rowing, you gain a full body workout that is low impact, putting yourself less at risk of the long-term damage that repetitive movements are prone to produce. Climbing offers an endless variable series of movements within a relatively controlled 12

Deepings

environment when on a wall, which creates opportunities to increase both stamina and endurance, before venturing out on the crag. These different approaches and situations you may find yourself in when climbing improve your mental problem-solving capabilities which, in turn, boost mental agility, focus and self-awareness. All of these culminate in a sense of real accomplishment through participating in an activity that you may have never done before, or perhaps have pushed yourself to exceed your own expectations. Climbing is a versatile, physically and mentally challenging activity that is available all-year round, whether that’s indoors on a wall or in the great outdoors. Tallington Lakes Leisure Park offers the chance to explore new heights on their fifteenmetre custom-built, outdoor wall, where all ages and abilities are welcome. So, even if you’re a seasoned climber or are just curious about starting out, Tallington Lakes can help with getting you out of your comfort zone and climbing!

Godsey Lane’s Green Spaces: The Story of Two Fields

F

(KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE)

ifty years ago, instead of a children’s playground in the field opposite the Tesco store, there would be black and white cows grazing. The Friesian dairy herd belonged to John Eve of Hall Farm in Halfleet, and at milking time they were led back to the farm across land where houses now stand. Mr Eve’s father, Herbert, had also kept dairy cows and delivered milk around Deeping by horse and cart. In the photograph taken around 1920 on a snowy day, he is pictured with his load of churns and pails. He won awards for producing clean milk, at a time when it was sold without heat treatment to kill any bacteria. John Eve won prizes for his pedigree herd, but in 1974 he and his wife gave the Godsey Lane field to Market Deeping Council, as an area for children to play. He died in 1985 and, four years later, Hall Farm was demolished to make way for a housing development of the same name. The stone boundary wall fronting Halfleet is all that remains of his farm, but his name lives on in John Eve Way. The adjoining field with its cycle track and dog walking area used to be ‘glebe land’, allocated to the Church in the early nineteenth century for the

rector’s benefit. Reverend William Hildyard planted a large number of trees in the field, but only a few ancient horse chestnuts survive from that time. The photograph from 1961 shows a well-worn path across the Glebe Field, leading to the church. It is part of a network of legal rights of way which was agreed in the Deepings in 1809, following the enclosure of open farmland into private holdings. The official footpath continues across Godsey Lane in line with the pedestrian crossing, then passes through Tesco’s car park along its boundary with William Hildyard School. It continues into Jubilee Drive behind the supermarket, then follows a dyke through arable fields to Linchfield Road. In 1986, Church Commissioners considered making the Glebe Field into a public car park, and two years later they drew up plans to build thirty-five houses and a community centre on it. Keen to preserve one of Market Deeping’s few green spaces, the town council opposed these schemes. The field was bought by the council in 1990 for the benefit of the community “in perpetuity”. People now come together there for carnivals and car boot sales, with circuses and funfairs held on the John Eve field next-door.

‘Leaping Forward for Young People’ ates of anxiety and depression in young people have risen by 70% in the past twenty-five years (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Survey) and the extent of the problem is not fully understood. There is increasing evidence that shows exposure to nature contributes to our emotional and physical wellbeing. Froglife has been developing an enduring relationship between young people and nature through many projects such as the Peterborough Green Pathways Project. Froglife is a national wildlife conservation charity, committed to the conservation of native reptiles and amphibians, using innovative eco-therapy projects to engage people from all walks of life. For over a decade, multiple Green Pathways Projects have been helping young people and those living with dementia all around the UK to develop socially end emotionally through the outdoors. Our project is supported by BBC Children in Need, along with local grants, helping young people manage extra difficulties in their lives through practical conservation and educational activities. We receive referrals from schools, charities and children’s services in

Peterborough, Fenland, South Kesteven and Northamptonshire area. We work in small groups to overcome the barriers that may have prevented them from accessing the outdoors by delivering sessions in local nature reserves, green spaces or community gardens. The benefits are far wider than we could have anticipated, and include increasing confidence, managing their behaviour and becoming more positive about the future. Our sessions run for ten weeks, allowing us to take the young people on a wildlife journey and shape the activities we offer. These range from pond dipping to building bug hotels, nature yoga and making nature documentaries. Over the holidays, we run wild workshops, one-off sessions that include reptile surveys, pond dipping and pond restorations. The positive feedback received really makes us feel we are striving for the right goals and validates how young people play a fundamental role in improving their community and local green spaces. The Show Must Go On! espite the challenges posed by Covid restrictions, children at Deeping St James Community Primary School have kept Performing Arts alive throughout the year. With over 120 children taking peripatetic music lessons, alongside their weekly music curriculum sessions, music has always been an important part of school life at DSJ. Each year, our students perform at several local events, as well as performing in a summer concert that showcases their hard work over the year. Things have been a little different this year, but we have all adapted, and found ways of ensuring that music and the arts are still a prominent part of our school life. At Christmas, our drama and music performances were filmed and sent to parents, our local elderly residents were sent video links to watch the children perform, and all of our students received home learning packs with prerecorded, step-by-step guides to allow them to still practise at home during lockdown.

working with our music students in their ‘bubble’ groups to form mini ‘bands’. Our mini rock stars have been rehearsing all term with help and guidance from their music teachers, and will be performing to their class ‘bubbles’ at the end of term. Our annual art gallery is now on display in the school hall, with a piece of artwork from every child in the school. The children have loved displaying their work, and the staff have been incredibly impressed with the commitment and resilience from the children. We are already looking forward to the next academic year, when we hope to be back in the local community performing with our musicians, and displaying the children’s artwork for members of the public to enjoy. Market Deeping Community Primary School Receives Two Positive Visits from OFSTED Monitoring inspections were carried out at Market Deeping Community Primary School on March 4th and May 20th, and both visits recognised the positive work that the leaders and staff at the school are doing to ensure a good education for pupils at the school. The inspection in March focused on the school’s provision during lockdown and evaluated this as being effective. A quote from a parent in the letter says, “The school has been great during lockdown. The home learning provided has been manageable as a working-at-home parent.” In May, the focus of the monitoring visit was on the school’s work towards being “Good” in its 20

next full inspection. The conclusion of which was: “Leaders and those responsible for governance are taking effective action in order for the school to become a good school.” Headteacher, Mark Ratchford, said, “It is very pleasing to have the hard work of our staff team, parents and children during the pandemic to be recognised so positively by OFSTED. It has been particularly interesting to have two visits by OFSTED within a short space of time and it is helpful to have guidance on further improvements to our wider curriculum. Our reading, writing and mathematics teaching and learning continues to be very strong, and our development of other subjects is our focus ready for the next visit. Hopefully, we will have a few more months to embed these improvements!” AUGUST 2021

e’re more of an ‘Old Macdonald had a Farm’ type of place, rather than a large, commercial unit”, admitted Tracey Hall, when I spoke with her recently about the new venture that she and husband Dave have opened to the public just south of Thurlby.

It has been her ambition to develop her longstanding work, caring for disabled youngsters in the past, and provide opportunities, not solely for them, but for everyone in the area, to have somewhere nearby where they are free to pet a wide range of farm animals, in a safe and controlled way.

The enterprise also gives the public the chance to offer their time and enthusiasm as volunteers at the farm, helping with the donkeys, goats, ponies, small sheep, guinea pigs, turkeys, geese and chickens. Early signs are very favourable, with Tracey highlighting how one local, Northorpe, volunteer has been raising funds for the farm by selling their eggs, along with donated teddy bears, on his stall in the street – step forward, Arthur Unsworth, aged nine!

Tracey has no doubts about the benefits to be gained from such an exposure to our hairy/furry/ feathered friends. Young children will no doubt find the offering at Tiny Steps Farm irresistible, but other groups of people too, especially the elderly and the lonely, are seen as

Local School Sees Rapid Change

inchfield Community Primary is a mainstream school and pre-school based in Deeping St James. The school officially joined C.I.T last year. The Community Inclusive Trust (C.I.T Academies) has a proven track record for supporting schools through to outstanding results. The Trust currently consists of six primary schools (plus another opening in 2022), eight special schools (plus another opening in 2023), and a ‘Teaching School’. The Trust has been supporting Linchfield since May 2019 and the school has made significant progress. C.I.T are continuing to work with the Linchfield team to ensure further positive development of the school. Headteacher, Katie Brockington, explains, “We have recently developed a new set of school values and rules at Linchfield Primary, with a focus on high expectations for all. We are continuously improving our curriculum offer to ensure that all children have the support and opportunities they need to achieve their full potential. I believe that the best way to

Linchfield School Values

learn is through first-hand, memorable learning experiences and therefore we are developing the visits and trips that we offer our pupils to maximise their learning time at Linchfield School.” Linchfield is looking forward to whole staff training in ‘Read Write Inc.’ which is a systematic phonics programme designed to ensure all children learn to read accurately and fluently. Comprehensive planning is provided for teachers so they can channel their energy and creativity into teaching fun and engaging lessons. The school has recently agreed to become a ‘Partner School’ with English Hub which means that Linchfield will have access to additional funding and support with teaching and learning in early reading. ‘Times Table Rockstars’ (TTRS) has been introduced in Key Stage 2 and pupils are really engaged with it. Plans for the future include further promotion of the love of reading, continuing to develop a stimulating learning environment and offering a full and varied curriculum to meet the interests and needs of all of the children attending Linchfield Community Primary and Pre-School.

Opening Up The Future!

S

eptember 2021 will be hailed as the month when Peterborough finally becomes firmly established on the national Performing Arts map. That is the ambition of Pino Soccio, the enthusiastic founding force and managing director of Young Technicians.

The reason is that the Young Technicians Academy, a specialist educational facility, training students in all forms of the Performing Arts, Media and Live Events industries, will be opening its doors in Eagle Park, Yaxley. Local musician and technician, Pino, can call upon many years of experience, performing both locally, and also at national venues such as London’s O2 Arena. The inspiration behind Young Technicians came whilst Pino was working in a secondary school for many years, wanting to deliver something new and exciting for young people to take part in. Launched in Whittlesey in January 2016, a handful of students were trained in the live events industry. Since then, the scheme has expanded into many different educational establishments across Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, Fenland and beyond, and consists of a balance of theory work, practical work and endless possibilities for the students who take part. Becoming a Community Interest Company (C.I.C.) in July 2017 has really enabled it to grow, with money reinvested into the future of the scheme and the students within the community. Now, working with 24

a directorship team, Pino has created the Young Technicians Academy, due to open next month. The present Young Technicians programmes have a 98% pass rate, with 85% of students moving into higher education or into jobs related to their respective industries. All students are given multiple opportunities to showcase their new skills in a range of internal and external events, including festivals, showcases, concerts and tour days. A variety of industry professional workshops is hosted throughout the year, in partnership with touring engineers, performers and producers. At the Academy, specialist sessions will run for an hour a week and, during school holidays, there will be workshops, inventory days, intensive courses, and events, giving students a range of activities to choose from. At the new, purposebuilt, 2,600 sq.ft, Arts Centre in Yaxley, students will be able to collaborate between departments on any projects that students lead, or towards any coursework. The courses are designed to encourage students both academically and creatively, with a wide range of content across theoretical and practical knowledge. No prior knowledge is needed, as full training for each course pathway will be given. If you have a passion for any of the Performing Arts, then the Young Technicians Academy is the best place for you. Launching next year will be two BTECs, one in Production Arts and one in Performing Arts. If you want to study sound, lighting or stage management or, alternatively, tread the boards and have ambitions to be on the stage, then this unique BTEC programme will be for you. School News

Summer Term at Northborough Primary School t has been another busy half term at Northborough Primary School. We have now finished our programme of planting trees, but are still busy growing produce in a Growing Tower and in planters around the school outside. The children are enjoying picking salad leaves and herbs to add to their lunch.

Year 5 and 6 children have been out and about in the village on their bikes, training with ‘Bikeability’. We want all of our pupils to leave school with the confidence to ride their bikes safely to their new schools in September. The Bikeability team were very impressed with the children’s skills and behaviour. Early Years have been nurturing all sorts of creatures - from chicks to caterpillars. They held an ‘Ugly Bug Ball’ to celebrate. We are enjoying our weekly assemblies delivered by Reverend Mark Aaron Tidesdale and have been busy designing logos to promote the fund raising efforts to renovate St Andrew’s church. This is the chosen design, created by Kim Tucker and Digby Charity. We will be supporting all of their events.

We are also fundraising for the Mustard Seed Project. This time we are saving pennies to provide socks and hot meals for the children at the Micha Bora school in Kenya. We hope to be zooming with the children in their new school shortly– how exciting that will be! Year 3 worked with Perry Burns from the Welland Rivers Trust to test the water at Nine Bridges. We found lots of invertebrates, but the tests showed large amounts of nitrates in the water. We are going to try to shop at local organic farm shops to help with this problem. We had a great time as well as learning lots. The school has trips planned to Flag Fen, Grimsthorpe Castle, Rutland Water, Tallington Lakes and Hamerton Zoo Park. We love to get hands on experience of everything we learn about if possible. We are very much looking forward to welcoming our new intake into school in September to start our journey together. We still have spaces in Foundation and Years 1 and 2, so come and have a look around our friendly village school if you would like to join us and take part in all of the exciting things we are doing.

William Hildyard C of E Primary and Nursery School The children at William Hildyard Church of England Primary and Nursery school have had a wonderful time celebrating Science Week. There have been lots of fun and exciting activities going on throughout the school, including building houses that could withstand an earthquake, designing and flying aeroplanes, recycling plastic bottles in as many ways as possible, and learning all about pollination. The highlight of the week was watching Year 4 testing out their amazing rockets. They managed to get them at least twenty metres into the air, with one in particular getting stuck up a tree!

Day’ where everyone came to school with white lab coats and crazy hair. The children have spent the week excited, engaged and loving every minute of their learning, creating fabulous memories along the way. Thank you to everyone for your hard work!

The week was finished off with a ‘Mad Scientist

Your Garden

N

August Gardening Tips ow is the time for some forward planning, which is the key to a successful plot.

As space becomes available when crops finish, you can plant overwintering crops such as Brussels sprouts, spring cabbage and winter cauliflowers. Cabbage seeds can be planted in a temporary bed or in pots or modules – remember to cover them with nets to keep off the birds and caterpillars. Also, for harvesting in the autumn and beyond, you could sow lettuce (keep out of the glare of direct sun), rocket, spring onion, radish plus winter salads, including mibuna, mizuna, mustard leaf and lamb’s lettuce. Watch out for potato blight, unsightly brown patches which appear rapidly on the foliage, common at the end of August when the weather is humid and damp. The leaves can be covered in a matter of days and the plant will collapse. All is not lost if you cut off the stems at ground level before the blight reaches the tubers. Jobs for August include: • Prune gooseberry and currant bushes. • Strawberry runners that have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot where you have not grown them for at least three years. Planting them through plastic will help conserve moisture and provide warmth during the winter. • Make sure that you harvest courgettes, regularly before they grow too large. • Cut to the ground all summer fruiting raspberry canes that have borne fruit this year and tie in the new green

canes that will produce next year’s fruit. Take care not to damage the new bright green stems. Tomatoes, pumpkins, and squash need feeding with a tomato fertiliser. Outdoor tomatoes should have their growth stopped by the middle of the month – nip out the leading growing shoot just above the highest truss. Continue pinching out and do not forget to provide support for the plants as they become more heavily laden – also for cucumbers, peppers and even fruit trees. Keep earthing up potatoes to prevent the tubers being exposed and also brassicas to support unsteady stems. Dig over any spaces that have been left from harvesting crops, where you could grow “green manure” such as clover or vetch, which will provide nitrogen for the soil or alfalfa, cress or mustard which will help break up the soil. Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes as this will encourage growth lower down and harvest regularly before they become tough and stringy: you can let some grow on to produce bean seeds for next year.

August sees the National Allotments Week (9th-15th), with the theme “Plotting for the Future”, celebrating the contribution that allotments make to a sustainable future. If you want to know more about this and the National Allotment Society, visit www.nsalg.org.uk Happy gardening!

Will & Probate Services

2021: The Year to Protect You and Your Family

ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING DIRECTOR WILL AND PROBATE SERVICES

Procrastination

I

was giving a presentation at an event recently; it was nothing to do with wills or anything remotely legal. In fact, it was about running a business and effective ways of growing it. However, one sentence in the presentation struck a chord, because it applies not just to running a business but to everything in life.

“It is not what you know that matters it is what you do.”

We entered the pandemic unprepared, with over 65% of the population not having an up-to-date, valid will, let alone a current and registered Power of Attorney. As we poke our heads out of ‘the other side’ (hopefully) and despite everything we have learned and everyone we have lost, that figure remains stubbornly much the same. So, this month’s message is simple and comes from my business talk which concluded that the worst thing the delegates could do was to have rocked up and then done nothing with the tools and knowledge that they had received.

The truth of that simple sentence is amazing. Many Here it comes! If you have read this far, or you have of you have read my articles for a number of years read my blogs and articles over the years, you know now, so you will know the importance of taking that you need to protect yourselves and action … to protect your family, to make your family. your wishes clear by making a will, to protect your assets from being eaten up The worst thing you can do this month is It is not what to pay for later-life care. read this far and then do nothing! You all have the knowledge; you all know you need to take action, but how many of you have? In truth, not that many!

you know that matters - it is what you do.”

Call us 01778 252 301 and we can start the conversation that will protect you and yours.

BY RICHARD ASH CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AND DIRECTOR You may know one of those ‘champions’ who always helps where they can or goes that extra mile for a neighbour, a stranger or a friend, and if you do then we would like to hear from you. Our plan is to offer a modest reward of lunch out at a local pub, diner, coffee shop or eatery up to the value of £100. We would ask that this offer is taken up locally to support our fantastic local businesses. We will select a monthly ‘champion’ from any nominations we receive. Mortgage Advice

Homeownership Schemes

S

ADVICE FROM LUCA PALUMBO, MORTGAGE & PROTECTION CONSULTANT

aving for a deposit, securing a mortgage, and finding the right home at the right price is difficult for some people, which can result in them being priced out of buying on the open market. If you are in this situation, it is worth looking into the Government schemes on offer to help you get on the property ladder.

HELP TO BUY The Government’s new Help to Buy scheme replaced the previous scheme. It came into place on April 1st 2021, and comes to an end in March 2023. The new scheme introduced property price caps and is restricted to first-time buyers only, supporting people onto the housing ladder. You’ll need to pay a minimum deposit of 5% of the property purchase price and arrange a repayment mortgage of at least 25% of the property purchase price. You can then borrow an equity loan to cover from 5% and up to 20% of the property purchase price of your newly-built home. If the property is in London, you can borrow up to 40%.

SHARED OWNERSHIP This route gives first-time buyers, previous homeowners who cannot afford to buy one now, and existing shared owners, the option to buy a share of their home (between 25% and 75%) and pay rent on the remaining share. You can buy a home through shared ownership if your household earns £80,000 a year or less (or £90,000 a year or less in London). 95% MORTGAGES From April 19th, first-time buyers are now able to purchase a home with only a 5% deposit. The scheme is aimed at increasing the supply of 5% deposit mortgages for credit-worthy households by supporting lenders to offer these products through a government-backed guarantee. First announced in the 2021 budget, the scheme will help first-time buyers or current homeowners secure a mortgage with just a 5% deposit to buy a house of up to £600,000 – providing an affordable route to homeownership for aspiring homeowners. The Government has offered lenders the guarantee they need to provide mortgages that cover the other 95%, subject to the usual affordability checks.

*Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage*

Consumer Advice

Advice

Your Consumer Rights if a Pet Becomes Unwell Soon After Purchase When you buy a pet from a shop, your consumer rights are the same as when you buy any item or product. This means you might be able to get a refund or a replacement pet from the shop if your pet gets ill or dies soon after you bought it. If you have to spend money taking your pet to the vet soon after you bought it, you should ask the trader who you bought it from to cover the cost of the vet’s fees. If you bought the pet from a private seller, you have less consumer rights than if you bought it from a shop or organisation. You can only get a refund for the cost of the pet if it didn’t match the description the seller gave you. So, if the seller described the pet as healthy, you might have a right to a refund. If you didn’t ask about the pet’s health and the seller didn’t tell you how healthy it was, there is nothing you can do. However, if you’re buying a puppy, you can ask the seller to sign a puppy contract, which is legally binding. The contract must contain detailed descriptions of the puppy’s health and history. You can ask for a refund if the puppy does not fit the description. If you would like further information or guidance on consumer issues, please call 0808 278 7996.

“Everybody Needs Good Neighbours!” By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades As life starts to get back to a new kind of normal, a major winner of the pandemic has got to be the nation’s community spirit, highlighted in the ‘Fourth of July Thank You Day’. So, let’s keep that going – and look at one easy but overwhelmingly effective way of supporting your local community... signing up to your local Neighbourhood Watch! Not only will neighbours be joining forces against crime in the area, but they can also be part of an invaluable network with many benefits – and be the ‘eyes and ears’ of your street. Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) works as a team where everyone comes together to make their communities safer and improve the wellbeing of its residents, working with the police, local authorities and many other voluntary and professional organisations. Living in a NHW area can: • Lead to lower home insurance. • Allow neighbours to keep in touch via a private Facebook or WhatsApp group. • Promote a communication system to warn about crimes in the local area, for example, cold callers operating in your street, or just to ask, “Which colour bin is it this week?” • Give a visible warning to burglars that the area is a NHW zone through displaying window stickers and road signs. The unfortunate news is that, as lockdown eases in the UK, we’re expecting a rise in burglaries. The NHW association has recently partnered with the Home Office to run a social media awareness campaign to alert those most at risk, giving them practical tools that are proven to prevent burglary by nearly fifty times. The ‘There’s safety in neighbours’ message – featuring the iconic black and yellow branding – encourages use of the “WIDE” combination of security measures in the home. Properties with the “WIDE” security combination (window locks, indoor lights on a timer, door double or deadlocks, and external lights on a timer or sensor) – are nearly fifty times more protected from burglary than those with no security. A really important aspect of a NHW scheme is to improve wellbeing in the community by encouraging activities aimed at improving neighbourliness, reducing loneliness and by fostering a community spirit. To find out more about joining a NHW scheme in your area, visit www.ourwatch.org.uk AUGUST 2021

So, You Need a Rewire?

R

BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

ewiring your home is not usually something that can be avoided; it is only when the installation in your home needs replacing.

To prepare you … you are likely to have holes in your walls that will need plastering. Unless you are having the installation surface mounted in trunking, or the walls of the building are hollow, there is going to be damage. We always minimise it as much as we can, and can arrange for the walls to be plastered for you if you wish.

Tips to make the rewire as painless as possible

1

Warn the neighbours. Nobody likes conflict, but there is the potential for it, especially if they are shift workers. But most people are happy to live with the noise, providing they know it is happening, and for how long. Alto Electrical have a letter template that you can have, to send to your neighbours that will warn them that the work is going to be carried out, how long it will last, and it will provide them with our contact details in case they need to discuss anything, such as where we are parked. Alternatively, we are happy to send that letter ourselves.

to keep providing power overnight.

3

Don’t go too far! When we are working on your home, often there may be decisions we need you to make. For example, we can’t access a certain area, so we would check with you if it is ok to go via another route. Sometimes, we need to ask questions, like, if we can’t find your stop cock to bond it, we may ask you if you know where it is. You may know that the kitchen used to be in a different room which we could then look in.

4 5

Put things away. Alto Electrical always cover things up when we are carrying out any dusty electrical work, but there is a lot of dust created in the process. So, even with everything covered up, it is impossible to remove all the dust sheets without disturbing it. Book the other trades in. If we’re not arranging the plasterers and decorators, get them booked in (leaving a little buffer). The quicker the plastering and decorating is done, the quicker the dust will go away. You don’t want to be waiting weeks or months before you can get all the dust out of the air. If you think you need a rewire, please get in touch and we can help to advise you.

2

Move out. I often ask my customers to move out when they are having a rewire. Not only are you going to avoid the worst of the dust, but we will be able to get finished much quicker if we’re not having to rewire circuits in stages. It also considerably reduces the cost as we can just press on with the work, instead of needing

FOREVER HOME AND GARDEN CARE

B

rian Toms is looking to establish himself in the local area as that handyman who is able to turn his experienced hand to anything in and around the home and garden, essentially those small, often fiddly, jobs. As he explains, “I understand many people don’t have the time or tools to do home improvements and some may not know where to start; there are others who for whatever reason cannot finish them.” “I aim to offer a solution, I don’t mind doing the smallest of jobs; hanging a picture, changing light bulbs, replacing the seal around your bath or putting up that curtain pole. When it comes to your garden, I can offer everything from just grass cutting to a full garden care package, painting a shed, putting up a hanging basket or fitting a water butt.” Brian has worked for over forty years in the landscape and garden care industry, installing everything from a single fence panel to exhibition gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show. Having to work to high standards has given him an eye for detail
