Welcome to your September issue... There may still be a lot of caution around as we move slowly back to our pre-March 2020 lives. School “bubbles” are set to burst as our youngsters return to their studies this month – massive congratulations to those who achieved success in their external exams in the summer and good luck in the years to come.
W
hat better way to boost a whole country’s spirit (and realisation that we’re maybe not too bad a country) than to have witnessed the recent Tokyo Olympics? Amongst all the fabulous performances, one in particular stands out for me Charlotte Worthington, after falling off her bike but then having another go at an almost impossible trick and landing a BMX gold – if at first you don’t succeed! Hoping you all enjoy our offering for this month, as nights start to pull in and “you know what” is a little over a hundred days away!

On the sporting theme, the mighty Posh have made a plucky start to life in the Championship – fingers crossed that I can still be saying that twelve months from now. And finally … I saw a racehorse called “Dalai Lama” running last week. I would have had £5 each way on it but I’m not a Tibetan man!

Those Tokyo Olympics certainly put a smile on many faces, and there were so many magical moments to savour. Tom Daley’s knitting prowess almost took the spotlight away from his diving achievements! Next up are the Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, again held over from 2020, which run until September 5th – more medals heading this way, hopefully.

DERMAL FILLERS
Four Years On... and Stronger
W
Well guys … September is finally here, and we are happy to announce that we are celebrating our FOUR-year anniversary!!! e would like to thank everyone who has picked up the phone or messaged us over the years, as we have now listed over one hundred regular clients, and rising, on our books. Our business has now become very successful, with us working six days a week, trying to fit in with clients’ needs and their working patterns. We take pride in the relationship we have with our clients and feel that’s what sets us apart from most aesthetic clinics, as we offer a friendly, relaxed, and welcoming vibe. We see our clients as friends rather than just a name and a treatment. Our biggest asset is Alistair, an extremely professional practitioner who can offer amazing advice and reassurance due to his twenty-six years working in pharmacy. He is always able to allay any worries you may have so that you feel completely at ease before you go ahead with any treatment. One of our core beliefs is talking to our clients
to find out what they would like to see us offer next, and what treatments interest them; after all, what you want is integral to our business. We strongly believe in the importance of reinvestment and enjoy developing our skills. This ethos has driven us to enhance our offering to include new courses, such as the range of

We have seen unprecedented demand for the five-point facelift and turkey neck procedures (profhilo), as well as the undereye injections for those fine lines and dark circles (jalupro), since we qualified in them a few months ago. They have proved extremely popular with our clientele.

Our clinic is very discreet and in a lovely, serene setting with parking available too, for extra ease. Call now on 07957 373162 and book in for the treatment of your choice.
Fat Dissolving
AFTER
For October, we will be training in fat dissolving injections, which are a reasonably priced way to remove and permanently dissolve localised and hard-to-shift pockets of fat. These target areas such as double chins, back fat, stomach, knees and even pseudogynocomastia (‘man boobs’) in men, where diet and exercise cannot help, moving into another phase of the “medical aesthetics” world. We invite any potential clients who may be slightly nervous or ‘sitting on the fence’ about going ahead with any procedures to come in and have a chat as we offer free consultations that allow you to go away and think about your decision without any pressure.

Eleven Medals for Deepings Swimming Club
D
eepings Swimming Club returned to competitive action in late July at the Derventio Welcome Back Meet at Ponds Forge International Pool in Sheffield.
A series of outstanding performances saw the squad of eighteen bring home eleven medals, seven of which were gold. It was the first-ever open meet for many younger members of the team, while others were experiencing racing in an Olympic-size 50m long-course pool for the first time. Thirteen-year-old Jacob Briers won gold in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke, 100m and 200m butterfly and 200m backstroke. He then showed his versatility across all the strokes by claiming silver in the 200IM. Deepings enjoyed most of its success in the 13yrs age group, with Sadie Hunter and Holly Roffe both medalling. In the 200m
butterfly, they went one-two with Sadie just edging Holly in a thrilling finish to claim gold. Sadie underlined her talent in the butterfly by taking bronze in the 100m event against a high-quality field. Eleven-year-old Joe Black completed the medal tally with an excellent bronze in the 200m freestyle. Deepings Swimming Club finished an outstanding ninth out of twenty clubs in the Top Club table, despite having one of the youngest squads, with all members of the team, aged ten to twenty-four, making valuable contributions. Several swimmers narrowly missed the podium
but almost all came away with personal bests. These included Bailey JacksonChilvers, Maddie Taylor, Ella Gerrard, Samantha and Jemma Munro, Harry Cardell, Jack Bell, Antony Hall, George Shaw, Harry Newman and Robyn Gerrard. Competing in their first open meets were youngsters Vincent Clarke, Matthew Hall and Eydee Chilvers. Each put in some strong swims and showed excellent potential for next season.
Deepings’ Butterfly Success
Deepings Swimming Club enjoyed a weekend of success in the butterfly at the Swim England East Midlands Summer Festival, with eight top three finishes across three age groups. The festival, which replaced the East Midlands Regional Championships, cancelled due to Covid restrictions, took place at the long-course 50-metre Harvey Hadden pool in Nottingham, and was the final meet of the highly disrupted 2020/21 season. Six Deepings swimmers took their place on the starting blocks after meeting the qualifying times. They were Sadie Hunter, Holly Roffe, Olivia Hunter, Sophie Baskeyfield, Holly Leggott and Jacob Briers. In addition to the squad of six, Molly Briers and Bethany EagleBrown also qualified for the swimming festival but were forced to withdrawal through injury and illness.

Lynn Chapman, Deepings Swimming Club Head Coach, was delighted with the performances, commenting, “The standard of competition was very high at this regional meet, but my swimmers did themselves and the club proud with some exceptional racing over the two days.” 12

Health
Enchanted Aesthetics . . g n i c u d o Intr Hello, my name is Sapphire Barron, and I am an advanced aesthetics nurse.
H
aving previously worked in nurseries caring for children with additional needs and in care homes, I knew that I wanted to develop my career further. I found it incredibly rewarding to be able to support individuals and families through times of need and I really understood the importance of care and compassion, having been through my own personal traumas. So, it felt natural for me to choose to complete my degree in paediatric nursing. Throughout my life, I have developed a passion for raising mental health awareness. From a young age, I noticed a lack of mental health support within our society, and I wanted to be part of changing this. So, I decided to apply for a job in children’s mental health where I currently work, alongside my aesthetics business. I decided to set up my aesthetics clinic as I was missing the clinical side of nursing. As a teenager, I suffered from severe cystic acne and bullying which had destroyed my confidence. Receiving emotional and physical treatment made a huge difference to my mental health which led me to want to support others in developing their own confidence enabling them to feel more comfortable in their own skin.
My ethos I do not believe in making people look totally different, but I do wish to help enhance their own natural beauty or reduce any areas of concern, so

that they can feel more confident.
Self-esteem begins from the inside and, whilst aesthetic treatments can certainly give a confidence boost, they are not the answer to more deep-rooted insecurities. This is where my mental health and nursing background adds huge value to my service. It is important to me that my service is never just about the treatment itself. It is about providing expert, safe, and compassionate care for the entire patient experience - to feel good about themselves from the inside, as well as from the out.
Beware: if you are considering aesthetics treatments Aesthetics treatments are certainly increasing in popularity. Unfortunately, there are a lot of practitioners who are not providing a safe service, mainly because of poor training. My aim in these monthly articles is to help educate the public so they feel more knowledgeable and confident about aesthetic treatments, should they wish to book in for one. The first steps, alongside doing your own research, are knowing what questions to ask your practitioner, so next month I will consider these questions and the ‘need to knows’, so that you can feel confident you are choosing a reputable, safe and competent practitioner.

“THEY THINK IT’S ALL OVER!”
Certainly Not – Here’s Walking Football! When watching football on the TV do you yearn for your old playing days? Or indeed, do you look back and wish you’d taken up football, something that was always on the ‘to-do’ list, but the years passed by, and it got away from you? Or perhaps you are just looking for ways to improve your physical health and mental wellbeing?
A
solution is now on your doorstep, as we have brought walking football, one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, to Bourne.
Aimed primarily at players of fifty years of age and older, male and female, walking football provides a safe sport that allows players to enjoy the game, no matter what their skill level. Rules that prevent contact and demand players show courtesy for those with lesser skills or mobility, mean that the sessions held at Bourne can be played by anyone from fifty all the way up to eighty and over! So long as you are able to walk and kick a ball, then the sport is there for you. We also allow players under fifty to participate where the individual has health, physical or mobility challenges. We currently hold three sessions a week at Elsea Park, Bourne;
Some of our players (about 50% of our membership) also enjoy playing in competition. As such, we have 50+, 60+, 65+ and 70+ team squads that play in friendlies, leagues and tournaments. Pandemics allowing, we even try to do an overseas walking football trip once a year. If you would like to try out the sport, please make contact to arrange a free ‘taster’ session. You can find more information on our website www.stamfordstrollers.org.uk or contact the club secretary, Taff Lovesey (taff@lovesey.net 07894 659479).

The Town Hall That Never Was!
I
(KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE)
n 1833, the Government gave permission for Crown land in the Market Place to be used for a Town Hall. It was to be built on arches to provide shelter for people attending the market, with a magistrates’ courtroom on the first floor. The scheme depended on wealthy, local people being willing to club together and pay for it – a kind of historic crowd-funding.
Warehouses on the site, rented by neighbouring grocers, would be demolished, and plans were drawn up by Stamford architect, Thomas Pilkinton who had recently re-designed Market Deeping rectory. The rector William Hildyard was also a magistrate, so it is likely he supported the project. Mr Pilkinton’s design shows a handsome façade with a clock and metal grills across the archways. Prospective subscribers were clearly not convinced by its merits, as it was never built. Six years later, in May 1839, Reverend Hildyard laid the foundation stone for a completely different Town Hall – the one we have today. Instead of a market hall, it had storage for the town’s fire engine, which had previously been kept in the church. There were also two cells for holding prisoners before they were taken to the courtroom upstairs.
A photograph taken in June 1903 shows a motor car rally in front of the Town Hall with its pointed gable, upper bay window and arched doorways of different sizes, quite unlike Thomas Pilkinton’s design. The larger opening on the left-hand side was for the fire engine.
Magistrates only dealt with minor crimes. In 1842, they fined a man for riding on the shafts of his wagon and “furiously driving in the town of Langtoft.” Other typical cases involved illegally fishing in the River Welland, assault, and stealing apples. The apple thief was sentenced to seven days in prison with hard labour!
In 1907, Kesteven County Council resolved they had no use for the building and it should be sold, but they were reminded by Alderman Valentine Stapleton, a local solicitor and brewer, that the Town Hall had been paid for by Market Deeping people. It was then agreed the Parish Council could continue to use it for a nominal rent.
1833 Town Hall design
In 1951, a proposal was made to convert part of the Town Hall’s ground floor into public conveniences. That was rejected, but in 1953, to commemorate the Coronation, a shelter was provided inside for use of “the old folk”! Another attempt to dispose of the Town Hall was made in 2019, to avoid costly repairs. After the Town Council agreed to maintain it, they were allowed to buy it for £1, and the 180-year-old building is now back in local ownership.

Hallam Travel: Taking you places since the 1990s By Lorraine Hallam
W
e have been organising days out since the early 1990s when the children were small, starting with ‘Disney on Ice’, so that they could share the experience with their extended family and friends, gradually adding other ones for them to enjoy, such as Legoland, Woburn Safari Park, and Cadbury World. On taking over the local Girls’ Brigade company in 1994 we turned these ideas into fundraising events for the Girls’ Brigade, opening them up to the local community. I resigned from The Girls’ Brigade in 2005, but people within the local community still wanted us to organise days out for them, so in 2006 we started building it up to what it is today and are now trading as Hallam Travel. Some good reasons why you should choose Hallam Travel: Only one pick up/drop off You don’t have to ride around the countryside for hours picking up other passengers before you get anywhere. There is a free car park at our Long Sutton departure. At the Spalding departure the maximum cost for parking will be £3 per day. Modern coaches We always use modern executive coaches. Each coach has reclining seats, toilet and seatbelts, which must now, by law, be worn, and air conditioning. Comfort breaks We have regular comfort and refreshment stops on all journeys taking over two hours. Friendly and helpful staff The key to the success of your day out is dependent upon the skills and knowledge of your driver and courier. We believe, at Hallam Travel, that the driver is there to drive the coach. Recipe

Cauliflower Cheese Cauliflower is now in season so what better reason to include this classic side dish as our September recipe?
Method
1 Pre-heat oven to 200˚C/180˚C fan/gas 6. 2 In a small bowl, mix the cheese with the breadcrumbs and parsley, and set aside. Put the cauliflower florets in a large saucepan, cover with water and a splash of milk (this stops the cauliflower smelling) and bring to the boil. Cook for 2-3 mins until tender, then drain. Serves 6
Ingredients 100g mature cheddar, grated
50g fresh white breadcrumbs Handful flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped 1 large cauliflower, cut into florets 1L full-fat milk, plus a splash 1 small onion, halved 85g butter 85g plain flour Recipe sourced from www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes

3 In a separate saucepan, pour in the milk, add the onion and some seasoning, bring to the boil, then take off the heat. In a small saucepan, make a roux by melting the butter slowly, then adding the flour, stirring to make a paste. While still over a low heat, add the boiled milk, discarding the onion. Using a whisk, beat the milk together with the roux and bring to the boil. Cook for 2 mins until the sauce is lovely and thick – make sure the heat is not too high, otherwise it will catch on the bottom and burn. 4 Transfer the cooked cauliflower to a casserole dish, pour over the sauce and top with the cheese and breadcrumb mix. Bake in the oven for 20 mins until golden and bubbling.

Market Deeping Group Hosts Festival of Friendship This September, to celebrate Friendship Month, Nene and Welland Oddfellows is on a mission to bring friends back together and encourage new connections after eighteen months of isolation and social restrictions.
T
he Market Deeping-based friendship group will be hosting a festival of friendship with events which include a Friendship Lunch on September 1st at The Waggon and Horses, Langtoft; a visit to the Exotic Pet Refuge on September 10th; and a Cold Pudding Club on September 14th at Oddfellows Hall Market Deeping.
Plus, many more events throughout the month. The taster events are designed to make visitors feel especially welcome and show them the benefits of joining a local friendship group first-hand. There are also online open days running throughout September. Karen Earth, Branch Secretary for the Society, said, “Since the end of the last lockdown, we’ve started to meet up again face-to-face. It’s been great to finally see people in person, but we’ve made a real effort during the pandemic to stay in touch with each other online.”
regular Zoom events, which are open to anyone to join in, not just its members. Nothing holds us back from enjoying a good quiz or natter! Our online meetings gave many the connections they needed to stay mentally well. We’re continuing to do them, as they can make a real difference to people’s happiness, especially those who struggle to get out and about, or who have to isolate.” Nene and Welland Oddfellows is a non-profit and mutual society, with over five hundred local members who meet regularly for social and fundraising activities. Annual membership also provides financial benefits and welfare support, with a dedicated care helpline and citizens advice team, volunteering opportunities, and a travel club. To register an interest in attending an Oddfellows Friendship Month taster event, or to receive a free local events pack in the post, contact Andrew Spencer on 07729 519122, or e-mail andrew.spencer@oddfellows.co.uk.
“Prior to the pandemic, Nene and Welland Oddfellows had only held in-person events for its members. But since the first lockdown, it has held 24

PETERBOROUGH NEW THEATRE TRUST
TO RAISE £3.5M TO BUY THEATRE
N
ow that Peterborough's New Theatre has re-opened following the long COVID-19 closure, an excellent opportunity has arisen for the community to buy the theatre and start to improve its facilities – whilst also protecting its long-term future.
A new community interest company, the Peterborough New Theatre Trust, is being formed to purchase the freehold of the theatre and ensure it is maintained as the ‘anchor’ cultural venue for the city centre in perpetuity. The trust has negotiated an offer to buy the theatre for just £3.25 million from its current landlord, excellent value particularly given that local philanthropist Peter Boizot refurbished the theatre at a cost of over £10m not so long ago. The trust believes that communities in and around Peterborough will step forward and either
donate or lend most of the cost of the investment, augmented by grants and loans from government agencies, other charities and local philanthropists. The trust has already secured £150,000 towards the target. At this stage we are looking for Peterborough people to show their support by becoming ‘An Angel of the New Theatre’ by simply emailing Angels@Dawe.co.uk and telling us how they could help buy the theatre. We are particularly looking for people who want to help us promote the Peterborough New Theatre Trust, through media, social media, virtual meetings and face-to-face. Join our campaign to bring the Peterborough New Theatre into community ownership, to ensure that Peterborough and its people can continue to benefit from a first-class arts venue in the city! Please visit www.newtheatre-peterborough.com to check out their forthcoming shows.

Your Garden
S
September Gardening Tips ummer draws to a close, days shorten, and there will be quite a bit of clearing to do on the vegetable patch.
Clear the soil of spent crops; leaving them to rot on the soil may spread disease, so put them on the compost heap, so long as they are not diseased. You could then rough dig and cover the ground for the winter or you could sow “green manures”. Field beans, annual rye grass or phacelia are just a few examples. If you have a light soil they can be left in over winter, but those with clay soils benefit from digging them in when you do your autumn/winter dig. It is important that you lift potatoes before the arrival of cold, damp days and before the slugs and worms can invade the crop: make sure they are well dried out before storing them in light-proof sacks and only store undamaged tubers. Onions should also be lifted and if you are keen, you can string them and then hang in a cool frostfree place such as a shed. Cut courgettes and marrows regularly because they will be finished by the end of the month, as will outdoor tomatoes. Remove any green tomatoes and place them in a drawer or shoebox to ripen. September is a good time to plant several crops which are hardy enough to withstand the winter and they will provide a steady supply of fresh leaves through to next spring. • Winter lettuces (Valdor, Arctic King or Winter Density are good varieties to choose).

• Spring greens – seeds can be sown in modules for planting out in October. • Spinach. • Lamb’s lettuce and oriental leaves. • Onion sets and garlic. • Planting broad beans in the autumn is a good way to avoid blackfly as they crop earlier. Crop covers keep the temperature slightly higher than the ambient temperature and protect the plants from getting battered by harsher weather conditions. A few jobs that need doing this month include: • Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms (1in) above the ground. • Harvest apples and pears as they become ready and pick the late season strawberries and raspberries, which will keep cropping right up until the first frost. Watch out for wasps! • Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry. • Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off, as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter. Tall growing varieties may need staking against autumn winds. • Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in. • Prune blackberries when picking is over: cut out all of the canes that carried this year’s fruit, leaving new canes unpruned. • Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners. Happy gardening!

Get ‘Scam-savvy’ this September in Less Than Ten Minutes By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades When it comes to fighting fraud, there is a free and easy way to help stamp out scammers. Safe Local Trades are proud to be working in partnership with the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP). CAPASP is a county-wide partnership of public, private and voluntary sector organisations, committed to working together to stop scams and doorstep crime across the county. This is something that Safe Local Trades has also been championing for over a decade. Scams are fraud and fraud is a crime – and it may come as no surprise to know that criminals have used the COVID-19 pandemic to target victims online, by e-mail or via text; mainly through impersonation scams, romance fraud and investment scams. Parcel fraud, HMRC, NHS Test and Trace, vaccination, ticket fraud, social media investment fund scams and attempts to dupe Tax Credits customers are amongst the top set of sophisticated schemes. Each year, scams cost the UK economy between £5bn-£10bn. In addition to the financial impact, scams can have a severe emotional and psychological impact upon victims. While anyone, irrespective of age, gender, education or economic background, can be a victim of a scam, these crimes are experienced particularly by people in our communities who are vulnerable for a variety of reasons, including poverty, isolation, frailty, disability and cognitive impairment, and by those who have been targeted specifically by organised, predatory criminals. Here is how YOU can help: It is easy to become a Friend Against Scams, just by attending a short online awareness session. In just eight minutes, you will be guided through types of scams, how to spot a scam victim, spotting the signs of a scam, helping family and friends and reporting and advice. Local councils, community groups, charities, businesses, schools, housing associations and other organisations or individuals can become supporters. You will receive useful information from CAPASP to share with your community and supporters also have access to resources such as posters and leaflets. The online training, resources and more information can be found at https://bit.ly/scam-training S E P T E M BE R 2 0 2 1

Shocking News!
‘Back to School’ Advice
I
BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
t’s that time of year when we are getting our little ones ready for the new school year ahead. I know I’m often not surprised when I see how much my three sons can destroy their shoes and trousers on a frequent basis! I think many of us will be aware just how curious, and, I dare say, destructive their young minds and fingers can be. Picking at seams and soles, pulling threads and even cutting away at things with knives or scissors. I am hoping that I’m not completely alone here!
If you’ve got a creative child, like my eldest, they may also like to build things. We’ve spent an absolute fortune on Lego over the years, as it was the only thing that would keep him entertained for any length of time. But, over the summer holidays, I was sorting through his room, and I found there were a couple of things that were really quite frightening.
pushed in the plug and received a shock. Some of you may know from my sponsored haircut, that he has a heart condition, so this is alarming. He went on to tell me that it was ok because it tripped off and he didn’t really feel it!
So, this is me appealing to you on two counts.
1 2
As a mother, to ask you when you are looking through to collect your children’s BACK TO SCHOOL kit, to take an extra moment to check your children’s electrical appliances in their bedroom.
As an electrician, to ask you to make sure that you have RCD protection on your board (consumer unit), and if you have, make sure you regularly check it - (do it now!) If you find any damaged cables or electrical goods that are damaged (or taken to pieces) please ensure that they are either discarded or repaired.
Over the recent months, his heated blanket must have stopped working and he knew that the first thing he should do is to check the fuse. He doesn’t need mum’s help, as he is thirteen now and knows much more than me [sarcasm!] To fix it and test it, he took another fuse from another appliance and plugged it in ... WITHOUT putting the back on the plug. Upon finding this, I, of course, questioned what had happened. It was explained that he had

Will & Probate Services
2021: The Year to Protect You and Your Family
L
ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING DIRECTOR WILL AND PROBATE SERVICES
Inheritance Tax and Giving it All Away ast week, I had a meeting with a client about their Inheritance Tax planning. They were property rich, had lots of savings and were of a generation that had really good pensions. They had an income of around £50,000 per year but were spending nowhere near that much to live.
The couple were already over their Inheritance Tax threshold, so by saving almost £30,000 per year they were adding an additional £12,000 per year to their future tax bill. The solution was to start giving away some of their wealth in the hope of reducing their Inheritance Tax bill.
2
Now, many of you will have heard about the “sevenyear-rule” … if you give something away and live for seven years, then it will be outside of your estate for Inheritance Tax purposes. This rule is one of the most misunderstood planning tools that are available, and it is far more nuanced than just giving your stuff away.
3
So first, let’s dispel the “number one myth” – you can’t give your home to your children and live for seven years and then the house falls outside of your estate, it simply doesn’t work. I still get asked about this every week and people are still amazed when I tell them no! Now that’s out of the way, let’s consider what you can do
1
Spend some money! I know it goes against the grain when you have spent your life “saving for that rainy day” but spend it. Go on your dream holiday, buy that new car, tick off everything from your bucket list.
Give some away. You can give £3,000 a year away and so can your spouse; start doing it and save £1,200 per year in Inheritance Tax. You can also give any amount of £250 gifts (so that’s Christmas and birthdays sorted!) and larger gifts, if close relatives are getting married. You can give away your excess income … which brings me right back to my clients. One of the least-used gifting rules is the one that says you can give away your excess income without Inheritance Tax consequences. I was able to advise my clients to set up three trust funds, one for each of their grandchildren, and give them £10,000 per year each. This means that the grandchildren get an excellent start in life and the taxman doesn’t get £12,000 for each year that the clients didn’t spend all their income. One word of warning though; all of this needs to be planned and documented in the right way, so if you want to see how a gifting strategy could fit into your estate plan, you need to take professional advice. Call us today on 01778 252301 to book a free initial consultation.

Mortgage Advice
The Fixed Rate Mortgage:
Is it for you?
A
ADVICE FROM LUCA PALUMBO, MORTGAGE & PROTECTION CONSULTANT
mortgage is arguably the biggest financial commitment you’ll ever make, so understanding the options available to you is extremely important. One of the biggest decisions you face when choosing, is whether you should go for a fixed rate or a variable rate mortgage. If you’ve taken out a fixed rate mortgage, your interest rate is locked in for a fixed period, in other words, the interest rate – and consequently your monthly mortgage repayment – will remain unchanged for an agreed number of years. The interest rate stays the same for the set period, usually between two and five years. When the fixed rate term expires, you are automatically switched to a standard variable rate (SVR). This is usually either your lender’s SVR or a “tracker” rate. As the monthly repayment stays the same throughout the agreed term, it’s easier to budget for monthly expenses and stay on top of your finances. Once the fixed rate term expires, you have two choices – either do nothing, or look to re-mortgage to a new deal. If you do nothing, you’re put onto a SVR, which tends to be higher than the fixed rate. And, because you’ll pay more interest, your monthly mortgage repayment might go up. If your fixed rate period is about to end, you should evaluate your current mortgage and consider switching to a new mortgage deal. It’s a good idea to start looking about three to four months before your fixed rate period expires. This will allow
sufficient time for you to switch straight to your new mortgage without ever paying the SVR. If you’re concerned about the stability of your financial situation and would rather know exactly how much your monthly mortgage repayments are each month, a fixed rate mortgage could be the right option for you. If you are coming to the end of a fixed rate mortgage and are looking to re-mortgage, you can, but you need to understand the implications before you make a decision. It’s possible to remortgage with your existing mortgage provider or switch to a new one. Whichever option you choose, it’s likely that you’ll have to pay fees for exiting your existing mortgage early. When a lender offers you a mortgage, you usually have between three and six months to accept it – after that, you’ll have to reapply. That’s why you should start your search when your current mortgage deal has at least three months or more to go. The end of your mortgage deal could open up some interesting possibilities. Doing nothing is an option, but it’s always worth researching what else is out there as you might find there’s money to be saved.
*Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage*

Liberty Partnership are delighted to launch
‘The Liberty Lunch’ to celebrate our community champions and those people that go the extra mile
BY RICHARD ASH CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AND DIRECTOR You may know one of those ‘champions’ who always helps where they can or goes that extra mile for a neighbour, a stranger or a friend, and if you do then we would like to hear from you. Our plan is to offer a modest reward of lunch out at a local pub, diner, coffee shop or eatery up to the value of £100. We would ask that this offer is taken up locally to support our fantastic local businesses. We will select a monthly ‘champion’ from any nominations we receive. When contacting us, we would ask that you say who they are, how you feel they have positively contributed towards our community, and provide their contact information, having asked their permission to do so. Please see this as being a good thing, something to celebrate, a way in which we at Liberty Partnership can celebrate our community. Sadly, we will not be able to recognise everyone, which we hope you all understand.

Nature
Nature Notes [ by David Denman ]
The long summer days go hand in hand with a new extravagance of wildlife. Flowers, birds, mammals and insects, forgotten briefly during the winter months, are now everywhere, bringing colour and movement to gardens, parks, fields and to the sky.
O
n our wonderful riverside walks, whiter-than-white, little egrets seem to be everywhere. A closer inspection reveals smart black legs and a pair of yellow feet, as if they were wearing yellow wellies! The fact that they are now so common is even more remarkable - the species only began breeding in the UK in 1996! Another waterside resident doing rather well is the Himalayan Balsam, a tall plant with bright purple flowers. It grows along the edges of watercourses, and you can often smell it before you see it, with its pleasant, if overpowering, aroma. However, its success is not to be welcomed as it has a knack of expanding very quickly along riverbanks and out-competing native riverside plants. Riverbanks in summer are a great place to see dragonflies. The adults are on the wing during the spring, summer and early autumn months, but their young stages can spend a year or more in ponds, streams and canals before they emerge from the water. There are three types of dragonflies. The dainty, thin-bodied damselflies rest with their bodies folded over their long multi-coloured abdomens. This year has been a good year to see the Banded Agrion, a damselfly with bright blue wings. Then there are the more bulky, faster flying, dragonflies. These can be split into medium-sized, wider bodied “darter” dragonflies and the long, narrower
bodied “hawker” dragonflies which can be as long as 74mm. Hawker dragonflies are well known for setting up their territory along a river or ditch bank and walkers who enter their territory will be examined at close quarters by a patrolling hawker. All dragonflies at all life stages are carnivorous, and adults catch and eat other insects whilst flying. Eating in flight is not something the adult female glow worm can aspire to. She does not eat as an adult and has no wings so cannot fly. However, she emits bright green light during summer nights. Once she mates, her light goes out and she lays her eggs and then dies. Glow worms are actually beetles, not worms, and are thought to be getting rarer in the UK. The Langdyke Countryside Trust* has recently undertaken a series of nocturnal surveys for these wonderful beetles, to find out where they live locally and there are still a few locations, a short drive from the Deepings, where they can be seen. Some glow worms can be seen “glowing” up to ten metres away, such is the brightness of the light they emit. Seeing a rural path lined on both sides with bright green lights during a pitch-black night was one of this summer’s great sights! * The Langdyke Countryside Trust is a voluntary, natureloving organisation working to make a difference to the environmental and cultural heritage around Peterborough and Stamford – the area so loved by peasant poet John Clare. For more information, visit www.langdyke.org.uk.

With the support of the PECT (Peterborough Environment City Trust) Eco-charter, we have developed both students’ and staff knowledge of sustainability and are beginning to implement long-term behaviour change. As well as the Woodland Trust award we have also been awarded a PECT Eco- charter award for continuing to enable sustainable and environmental accomplishments at our school. DIRECTORY BUSINESS FEATURE OF THE MONTH:
C
AP APPLIANCE CARE: PUT YOUR ‘WHITE GOODS’ INTO ANDY’S SAFE HANDS
rowland’s Andy Schofield confirms the opinion that you’re never too old to start a new business.
This sixty-two-year-old domestic appliance engineer has decided to step back from full-time employment, which has seen him recently complete almost twenty years with BSH Home Appliances. Domestic circumstances and a re-appraisal of his work/ life balance has meant that the expertise and valuable experience Andy gained on the Bosch-NEFF-Siemens range of products can now be channelled into his new domestic appliances servicing and repairs business.
Andy, trading as AP Appliance Care, will be offering assistance to domestic owners of all makes and types of ‘white goods’, but Andy’s specialisms in built-in ovens and coffee machines would single him out as the ‘go-to guy’ for anyone with the Bosch and NEFF ‘slide and hide’ type of built-in oven, or the larger, built-in coffee machines such as Gaggenau, from the German manufacturer of highend domestic appliances. The time spent with the prestigious BSH company and Andy’s regular calls on customers

CALL ANDY: 07933 213738 in the South Lincolnshire and North Cambridgeshire area, was seen as the spur needed to encourage Andy to set out on his own, confident that the contacts already established will serve him well in the years to come. Why not entrust your appliances to Andy too?
