Welcome to your October issue... A timely reminder that “Stoptober” is now upon us, a movement that has already driven over one million ‘quit smoking attempts’ to date and is the biggest mass quit attempt in the country. It is based on research that shows that if you can stop smoking for twenty-eight days, you are five times more likely to stay smoke-free for good.
W
hy not give it a go this year? For some very useful information, search ‘Stoptober’, or visit www.healthypeterborough.org.uk .
With the money you’ve saved then treat yourselves to a Christmas to remember – less than a hundred days from now! But before then, don’t forget to stock up for when those “Trick or Treaters” pay you a visit on Hallowe’en. On the subject of abstaining, may I draw everyone’s attention to the fact that my “Dry January” is now entering its tenth month, with ne’er a drop passed “’twixt cup and lip”? Finally, don’t forget to change your clocks (“Spring forward, Fall back”), as we lose the hour on Hallowe’en itself, Sunday October 31st.

What greater praise could any youngster get than to hear their father say, “You’re even better than your dad thought”? So it was that Ian Raducanu shared the view of the whole nation recently, when his absurdly gifted daughter, Emma, not only won the US Open tennis championship, but did it as a complete outsider, and without losing a single set along the way. No wonder he was driven to superlatives! Any ideas who might get this year’s runner-up spot in the Sports Personality of the Year awards? My friend told me he was thinking of going to a fancy-dress party dressed as an Italian island. I said, “Don’t be Sicily”. He said there was a guy going with a didgeridoo playing “Mamma Mia”. I said, “Now that’s what I call Abba-riginal!” Enjoy the read.

Wanna Lose Those Pandemi
W
Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat…. And thanks to the “Covid Stone“ so are the rest of us!! ith coming out of the pandemic and restrictions easing, it’s now time to look forward to those Christmas parties and social gatherings that we missed out on last year. Here at Deep-in Aesthetics we would like to introduce our new treatment offering which will hopefully help give you the push start you need. We have recently invested in training in a raft of new procedures, not least of which is the fat-dissolving-injection, known as Aqualyx. This is a safe, effective method of destroying fat cells in the treated area. It produces long-lasting results which means you can banish those unwanted areas of stubborn fat that diet and exercise don’t seem to shift. Aqualyx can be used to treat small pockets of fat around the chin, chest, abdomen, and thighs. It is not the recommended treatment for weight loss, but it is beneficial for body contouring and skin tightening. The procedure takes around twenty minutes, is minimally painful and results in around 2cm of stubborn fat being cleared after four to five weeks.
Due to genetical predisposition, some fatty deposits cannot be broken down through diet and exercise alone and extra weight cannot be shifted, leaving small rolls of unsightly fat in certain areas. If you are struggling with this particular issue, these injections can be extremely effective and, if you are concerned about the downtime and pain of traditional fat reduction procedures such as liposuction, then this is the treatment for you.

ic Pounds?
Before treatment, numbing can be used to minimise any discomfort you may feel during the procedure and side effects are mild. Any tenderness or bruising is usually resolved within a few days, and many don’t experience tenderness at all. The number of treatments needed will depend on the amount of fat in the area you want to target and how your body reacts to Aqualyx.

Some people will see dramatic results in just one or two treatments. If you maintain a healthy lifestyle, the fat treated by Aqualyx is very unlikely to return. Once the cells have been treated by the injection they are permanently gone. Consider this another good incentive to make better lifestyle choices. As well as fat dissolving, we are also providing treatments to counter excess sweating and hand rejuvenation. We offer free consultations where you can visit us to talk through any DISCRE worries or questions you may have.

I cannot recommend this lovely couple enough. They explained everything to me in great detail, put me at ease, and were very professional. I have recommended friends and family to them as this is one of the best clinics I have been too. What Clients Need to Know . . n o e c i v Ad
I
f you are considering undergoing an aesthetic treatment, it can be quite daunting knowing where to start and which practitioner to choose. I would recommend you take the time to do your research before jumping straight in as these are clinically medical procedures, so you need to ensure you are in safe hands. To help you out this month, I have included below some of the key questions you should be asking your chosen practitioner and why these are important.
What training have you had? Unfortunately, the aesthetics industry in the UK is not yet regulated. This means anyone can buy a day course in aesthetics with no previous medical knowledge and start injecting. Some aesthetics courses are extremely in depth and can be taught by doctors or surgeons, however other courses may be taught by people with only a few months experience in aesthetics themselves. This is why it is so important to understand the level of training your practitioner has had and by whom. As there are usually no aesthetics exams to pass in order to demonstrate knowledge and competence in treatments and management of complications, you may wish to turn to a practitioner with a medical background, for example, in nursing or dentistry who is registered with a professional body. This means that your practitioner MUST comply with strict regulations to keep their clients safe from harm. It also means they may have studied for many years in university, have experience in recognising and managing medical complications and passed exams on advanced life support, evidence based practice and health & safety to just name a few.
Do you treat anyone under the age of eighteen?
ENchanted M E D I C A L A E S T H E T I C S
12
Deepings
The law has recently changed meaning it is now ILLEGAL for injectable aesthetics treatments including Botox and fillers to be given to anyone under 18! If your practitioner is willing to treat under-18s, they are willing to break the law and practise without insurance.
What are you doing to ensure continuous professional development? Scientific knowledge is constantly evolving as is our understanding of best practice within aesthetics. It is important your practitioner can prove they undertake regular training and research. Do not be afraid to question their knowledge. This is your own body you are trusting them with.
Are you fully insured for each treatment you carry out? Ask to see your practitioner’s insurance documents and certificates to prove they are insured to provide the treatments they will be giving you.
Where do you source your products? Make sure you know where your practitioner buys their products from. Botox is a prescription-only medication and MUST be ordered from a pharmacy with a prescription by law. It is illegal to give someone Botox if they have not had a face-to-face consultation with a medical prescriber first. Fillers should also be sourced from pharmacies or official reputable distributors. If someone is buying Botox or fillers from selling pages on the internet, there is a high risk these products are fake, illegal or dangerous. Always ask to see the product in its original packaging and check for the CE mark and the expiry date. If you would like any more advice on this topic please do not hesitate to contact advanced aesthetic nurse Sapphire.

Will & Probate Services
2021: The Year to Protect You and Your Family
ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING DIRECTOR WILL AND PROBATE SERVICES
Care Costs
T
he following article is a reprint of an article that I wrote in 2014 – seven years ago. But, given the government’s latest announcements on their proposals for care, it bears a reprint because, besides a 1.5% increase in National Insurance, nothing much else has changed. I have inserted the new figures alongside the projections from seven years ago.
years and only £12,500 every year thereafter.
Smoke and Mirrors: How the Government Put a Positive Spin on a Tax Increase.
Curiously, the last figures I saw that gave an average length of stay in a care home said it was four years.
There has been a great deal of comment in the last week about paying for long-term care that will be capped at £75,000 (£86,000). This announcement was initially welcomed with a fanfare in the press, but it has already started to unravel. What the government has said, and what it means – • Nobody will be forced to sell their home to pay for care in their lifetime. Local Authorities will extend the current deferred payment scheme with legal charges that will be paid off after a person’s death. The new scheme will attract interest. • There will be a cap on care costs at £75,000 (£86,000). This does not acknowledge that “hotel costs” will have to be met. The figure of £200 per week for hotel costs was in the original Dilnot Report, as was a fees cap of £35,000. However, the proposed hotel costs cap is now £12,500 (not yet specified under the new proposals) per year indefinitely, plus £75,000 (£86,000) per person (which is about four years care) means that you will pay out £125,000 (£136,200) in the first four
If you contrast the average care home cost of £550 (£808) per week at the moment or £114,400 (£168,064) over a four-year stay, the net gain to the person in care under the new scheme is £31,864. This obviously is a good thing but does not truly represent the publicised figure. It also doesn’t consider the potential impact of the National Insurance increase which will affect everyone differently dependent on their circumstances. • The lower asset limit will be raised to £123,000 (£100,000). No arguments from me, this is a good thing; a rise from £23,500 at present so people will get to keep a bit more of their hard-earned cash. The last thing to say is that these are only proposals at the moment, and they won’t come in until 2017 (2023) at the earliest (parliamentary time and elections permitting). So, you still need to be focussed on doing the right planning for you and your family. Call us on 01778 252301 to see how Will & Probate Services can help you to help your family to best protect your important assets.

hildren in the Foundation Stage have had a brilliant start at Linchfield School, where all the staff have been delighted with how well the children have come into school in the morning and settled into the daily routine. They have enjoyed making music, building models with various construction kits, and exploring our exciting outdoor area. It has been a very exciting first week back at Linchfield as we have been learning about democracy and its history. The children had the wonderful opportunity to take part in the democratic process of electing their class ‘School Parliament’ representatives and Linchfield’s Head Boy and Head Girl. In classes, the children listened to the speeches of those running for School Parliament and then the whole school came together to listen to the speeches of the Year 6 children hoping to be Head Boy or Head Girl. Every child that prepared a speech and ran for a position should be incredibly proud of their achievements, even if unsuccessful in obtaining a position. The Year 6 children who were brave enough to prepare a speech and deliver it in a whole school assembly deserve special recognition for their excellent speeches. They represented themselves and our school in such a fabulous way, demonstrating our school values of resilience, respect, responsibility, resourcefulness, and reflection. Congratulations to the following children on their new positions: Head Girl - Jemima Dent: Head Boy - Ethan Lake Deputy Head Girl - Tilly Baillie: Deputy Head Boy - Ryan Swanborough OCT OBE R 2 0 2 1

Liberty Partnership are delighted to launch
‘The Liberty Lunch’ to celebrate our community champions and those people that go the extra mile
BY RICHARD ASH CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AND DIRECTOR You may know one of those ‘champions’ who always helps where they can or goes that extra mile for a neighbour, a stranger or a friend, and if you do then we would like to hear from you. Our plan is to offer a modest reward of lunch out at a local pub, diner, coffee shop or eatery up to the value of £100. We would ask that this offer is taken up locally to support our fantastic local businesses. We will select a monthly ‘champion’ from any nominations we receive. When contacting us, we would ask that you say who they are, how you feel they have positively contributed towards our community, and provide their contact information, having asked their permission to do so. Please see this as being a good thing, something to celebrate, a way in which we at Liberty Partnership can celebrate our community. Sadly, we will not be able to recognise everyone, which we hope you all understand.

READY FOR HALLOWE’EN ON
OCTOBER 31ST? WHAT’S THAT ALL ABOUT THEN?
H
allowe’en is a night of celebration, every year, on October 31st. The word Hallowe’en is a shortening of “All Hallows’ Evening”, (the day before All Hallows’ Day). Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting “haunted houses” and carving pumpkins or “jack-o-lanterns”. Hallowe’en has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced “sah-win”). The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that, on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc, such as sickness or damaged crops. The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which in turn attracted bats to the area. These are additional attributes of the history of Hallowe’en.
Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or appease them. “Trick-or-treating” is an activity for children on or around Hallowe’en, in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as confectionery with the question, “Trick or treat?” The “trick” part of “trick or treat” is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property, if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of Hallowe’en. It has become socially expected that if you live in a neighbourhood with children, you should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters.

Perkins to Power Peterborough’s Walk to Remember, he Sue Ryder Charity has announced that city business, Perkins Engines Company Limited, will sponsor its “Walk to Remember, Peterborough” event, where people will celebrate the memories of their loved ones at Ferry Meadows on Sunday October 24th. “Walk to Remember, Peterborough” will see people walking five or ten km. while raising money to help Sue Ryder’s nurses and healthcare teams fill someone’s last days with love. Earlier this year, Perkins employees chose Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice as one of its two new charity partners. The hospice provides compassionate palliative care for people from across Peterborough and the surrounding region and supports their families. Its services include a specialist in-patient unit, hospiceat-home team, and bereavement support. Nilesh Patel, Senior Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, said: “We are really delighted to announce that Perkins is sponsoring our Walk to Remember, Peterborough. Their support will allow local people to get together with family and friends to remember someone special. Plus, the funds raised through Walk to Remember will help to make sure the care we give can continue, and that we can keep filling families’ final days together with love. A huge thank you to everyone at Perkins, from all of us here at Sue Ryder – your support is very important to us.”
Ann Brown, General Manager of Operations at Perkins’ Peterborough facility, said: “Sue Ryder is already one of our charity partners, so when they approached us about sponsoring the Walk to Remember, Peterborough, we were thrilled to be in a position to support this very worthwhile community event. It’s a great opportunity for families to come together and raise funds for Sue Ryder, while remembering and honouring someone special.” Find out more about the Walk to Remember, Peterborough and sign up at www.sueryder.org/ walkpeterborough. You can contact the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice fundraising team with any queries by e-mailing thorpe.fundraising@sueryder.org or calling 01733 225 999. Ticket prices: adult £12, child (five to sixteen years) £7. Children under five go free. Family tickets (2 adults, 2 children) are £30, and a team of six ticket is £60.

Your Garden
W
October Gardening Tips
ith autumn, comes the endless sea of leaves that provide a fantastic, free improver for the soil, in the form of leaf mould. Although not providing as many nutrients to the soil as garden compost, leaf mould can add to soil structure and increase the ability of the soil to retain water. This way, it provides a good habitat for soil life such as beneficial bacteria and earthworms. Leaf mould is also excellent when used in containers because of its ability to retain water. An easy way to make leaf mould: • punch a few holes in the side of a black plastic bag, • rake leaves or use a leaf vacuum, which chops the leaves, • when full sprinkle with water, shake and tie, • the following autumn they can be used as a mulch or in two years can be used as a soil conditioner. It is a busy month on the vegetable plot, clearing it of plant debris, composting and preparing for the cold months ahead. Potatoes and beetroot should all be harvested now; although carrots can be left in the ground it is probably advisable to lift them. October is perfect for dividing large, oversized crowns of rhubarb: if established plants are left indefinitely, they do eventually produce less each year. Cut up and divide the crowns into good sized pieces, making sure each has signs of dormant buds and as it is not a fussy plant can be planted almost anywhere: so long as the ground
26 30

does not get waterlogged. It is also the perfect time for moving or planting new fruit bushes and trees. Bare-rooted trees will benefit from the warmth still left in the soil. Crops that can be sown this month are: • Early broad beans. • Japanese over-wintering onion sets. Although large onion sets look stronger, small or medium ones are less likely to bolt in the spring. • Last chance to transplant spring cabbages – be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves. • Plant garlic. Other jobs for this month include: • Continue to earth up celery and leeks. • Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd. • Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries. • Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas –leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould. • If you have not already done so, earth up, or stake (or both) Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants. • Pick the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana – this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening. • Cure pumpkins and squashes – cut and leave them to dry out in the sun; it hardens the skins, and they will keep for longer. • Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost. • Remove runner bean canes: if left in the ground they will easily rot. Happy gardening!

Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire: Help with Dental Treatment Not all medical treatments are free on the NHS. Many dental surgeries operate privately with patients being asked to pay costs. This can be expensive for those on low incomes. This month, we take you through getting help with dental costs.
Depending on your income, you are entitled to free NHS dental treatment, including checkups if, at the start of the treatment, you:● are
getting Universal Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, incomerelated Employment and Support Allowance or the ‘guarantee credit’ part of Pension Credit. Your partner and children will also be entitled to free treatment if they are included in your benefit award. If you are getting Working Tax Credit and/ or Child Tax Credit, you may be entitled to free dental treatment, depending on your income. ● are under 18. ● are 18 and in full-time education. ● are pregnant or have had a baby during the last twelve months. This includes if you have had a miscarriage after the 24th week of pregnancy, or your baby was stillborn. ● are a prisoner. You may have to show your dentist proof that you are entitled to free treatment. If your circumstances change before treatment ends, you will still be able to get free treatment. If you are not in one of the categories listed above, you might still be able to get free dental treatment on the grounds of low income. Gardeners: Can you Help Meet Demand for Vulnerable Customers? By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Autumn means many jobs still to be done in the garden, from tidying perennials, laying new lawns, and planting shrubs, to planting spring flowering bulbs and composting fallen leaves. However, if you are physically unable or not confident enough to carry out the jobs yourself, this is where our Safe Local Trades tried-and-tested members bring their expertise to their many customers. As well as our work with the trades, much effort is placed on safeguarding the more vulnerable people in our communities by working personally and directly with other caring and concerned parties in the local community, such as Peterborough and Cambridgeshire Age UK, The Bobby Scheme, Disability Peterborough, Care Network, CAPASP (Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Against Scams Partnership) and many more. Amid fears that vulnerable residents could fall foul of green-fingered scammers, our partners rely on Peterborough-based Safe Local Trades for recommendations they can pass to their clients. Trusting our register since 2008, Safe Local Trades is the only local register where all members are stringently vetted, criminal record-checked and monitored. Our members can deliver a professional service while understanding the clients’ needs and concerns, giving care and attention to pruning plants and shrubs. We are desperately frustrated and saddened that we don’t have enough gardeners to cope with the garden maintenance requests – we want to do everything that we can to help our partners and customers. Year on year, we continue to see the demand for this service increase. So, if you offer garden maintenance services and would like to consider joining Safe Local Trades alongside our existing members, we would love to hear from you – please visit www.safelocaltrades.com/become-a-member. Or perhaps you have a passion for plants and love gardening, have a sound horticultural knowledge and are thinking of setting up your own business, just like member Helen Yeeles (testimonial at www.safelocaltrades.com/traders/testimonials) who quickly filled up her order books after starting her own business. Deeping Feasts
Local History
V
(KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE)
illage feasts began as religious festivals, but over the centuries they evolved into occasions for general merrymaking. Families and friends came together for a special meal on Feast Sunday, with games and dancing during the week. There were street entertainments and plenty of drinking in local pubs. By Victorian times, Feast Weeks were notorious for rowdy behaviour, and competitive sports were organised to divert high spirits. Deeping St James’s Feast took place in August, with traditional fare of duck and peas, and a parade led by a local brass band. There were stalls and fairground rides near The Cross and in the paddock of The Bell Inn. In 1875, following a cricket match against Market Deeping, an evening duck hunt was held on the river, using dogs. It may have got out of hand, as the local police sergeant arrived and stopped the pursuit. In 1880, about four thousand people attended sports in the park of Waterton Hall, and good prizes were awarded to race winners. Novelty competitions included “Grinning through a Horse Collar”, (which attracted no entrants). On one occasion, there was a washing competition for women who scrubbed at speed in a row or tubs,
A sprit boat race near High Locks
then pegged out clothes on a line. River sports were held each year between High Locks and the bridge, with swimming, diving and boat races. As shown in the photograph, boats were propelled by traditional long poles, known as sprits. Towngate in Market Deeping held its own Feast in the last week of October, which probably originated in medieval times when a Guild Hall dedicated to All Saints stood near the crossroads. A funfair and sporting activities were held on a large green near the Cross. Although only a small community, Towngate people had ambitious ideas and their poster in 1852 declared the event was “Open to the World”! The word “gynecocratic” must have caused some puzzlement. Perhaps the printer misread someone’s handwriting, as it relates to “a political system governed by women”! “Jingling Matches” involved blindfolded players within a roped-off enclosure, trying to grab hold of a sighted person who was jingling a bell. As in Deeping St James, nearby public houses did a good trade, and The Wheatsheaf in Towngate East was a popular venue for dances and singing. By the 1890s, attendance at Towngate’s Feast was dwindling, and in 1913 the tradition was said to be dying out fast. It continued for longer in Deeping St James, but by the 1950s most village feasts were a thing of the past. However, funfairs still come several times a year, and community spirit is kept alive by the annual carnival and raft race.

Mortgage Advice
Mortgage Finance
A
ADVICE FROM LUCA PALUMBO, MORTGAGE & PROTECTION CONSULTANT
ll first-time-buyers are hoping to make this year the year they get on the property ladder, thanks to the increasing availability of 95% mortgages. But while there are higher numbers of suitable mortgages available, there’s no guarantee that you’ll be approved. To improve your chances, here are some of our top tips:
1
Register to Vote It might not sound like this has much to do with your mortgage, but you’ll find it impossible to get approved if you’re not on the electoral roll. Though the main purpose of this register is to prevent fraudulent voting, it’s also used in credit applications and is one of the first things a mortgage provider will check. The process of registering is easy (so long as you’re a British citizen, an Irish citizen, or a Commonwealth or EU citizen who is living in the UK) and it can be completed online.
2
Check Your Credit Report Your credit report includes any financial issues on your record in the last six years. If you’ve received a county court judgement or filed for bankruptcy in that time, more than likely you’re aware of the issue and how it could affect your mortgage application. But even smaller incidents, such as late bill payments, can impact your score, and occasionally you’ll see something on the report you weren’t aware of. Very occasionally, you may also find an error, which can be corrected by contacting the creditor.
3
Organise Your Finances Lenders want to see that your financial affairs are in order, so now is the time you need to tidy them up. If you have bank accounts that you no longer use, close them. If you have small amounts of money in different accounts, consider pooling them together into one to give a clearer picture of your financial position.
4
Pay Off Outstanding Debts Mortgage providers will check to see how many credit arrangements you already have before they approve your mortgage, and they want to see that number as low as possible. So, if you have small outstanding debts that you can clear without subtracting from the money you have saved as a deposit, it makes sense to do so.
5
Delay New Credit Applications Usually, when you make a new credit application, the lender will perform a hard enquiry on your credit score. If several hard enquiries are made during a short period, that can temporarily affect your credit score. So, until your mortgage application is approved, it’s best to delay new credit applications, whether this is a new credit card, a new phone contract, car financing or any type of loan.
*Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage*

So, You Need a Rewire?
R
BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
ewiring your home is not usually something that can be avoided; it is only when the installation in your home needs replacing.
To prepare you … you are likely to have holes in your walls that will need plastering. Unless you are having the installation surface mounted in trunking, or the walls of the building are hollow, there is going to be damage. We always minimise it as much as we can, and can arrange for the walls to be plastered for you if you wish.
Tips to make the rewire as painless as possible
1
Warn the neighbours. Nobody likes conflict, but there is the potential for it, especially if they are shift workers. But most people are happy to live with the noise, providing they know it is happening, and for how long. Alto Electrical have a letter template that you can have, to send to your neighbours that will warn them that the work is going to be carried out, how long it will last, and it will provide them with our contact details in case they need to discuss anything, such as where we are parked. Alternatively, we are happy to send that letter ourselves.
to keep providing power overnight.
3
Don’t go too far! When we are working on your home, often there may be decisions we need you to make. For example, we can’t access a certain area, so we would check with you if it is ok to go via another route. Sometimes, we need to ask questions, like, if we can’t find your stop cock to bond it, we may ask you if you know where it is. You may know that the kitchen used to be in a different room which we could then look in.
4 5
Put things away. Alto Electrical always cover things up when we are carrying out any dusty electrical work, but there is a lot of dust created in the process. So, even with everything covered up, it is impossible to remove all the dust sheets without disturbing it. Book the other trades in. If we’re not arranging the plasterers and decorators, get them booked in (leaving a little buffer). The quicker the plastering and decorating is done, the quicker the dust will go away. You don’t want to be waiting weeks or months before you can get all the dust out of the air. If you think you need a rewire, please get in touch and we can help to advise you.
2
Move out. I often ask my customers to move out when they are having a rewire. Not only are you going to avoid the worst of the dust, but we will be able to get finished much quicker if we’re not having to rewire circuits in stages. It also considerably reduces the cost as we can just press on with the work, instead of needing

Something to Celebrate...! LINCOLNSHIRE DAY is on October 1st and marks the anniversary of the Lincolnshire Rising, a revolt by Catholics against the establishment of the Church of England by Henry VIII in 1536.
T
he first official Lincolnshire Day was held in 2006, to commemorate the uprising, when the date was voted for by readers of “Lincolnshire Life” magazine and BBC Radio Lincolnshire listeners.
The day aims to encourage local people, often known as “Yellowbellies”, and those who have moved from the county, to honour the historical event, along with Lincolnshire’s traditions, its past and some aspects of its culture. Some people dress up in yellow, to celebrate the day, while others hold local events and decorate their workplaces with Lincolnshire flags. The home of Lincolnshire sausages, plum bread, Batemans Brewery and Lincolnshire Poacher cheese, to name a few, Lincolnshire remains a rural county, renowned for its foods and drinks, distributed locally and across the UK. It is also home to the famous Red Arrows RAF display team, Lincoln Cathedral and the original copies of the Magna Carta (1215) and Charter of the Forest (1217), the only place to hold copies of both.

Nature
Hedgehogs, Bats and Badgers
Autumn is a season of changes, with plants and animals preparing for the shorter days to come. Leaves shed by trees and hedges are making a vital feeding area for birds and mammals, with leafless trees standing stark against our wonderfully vast skies. [ by David Denman ]
T
he new autumn television schedules were once eagerly awaited in our home, but not anymore! TV watching has been replaced by hedgehog watching!
One bag of hedgehog food and a saucer of water (never milk) was all it took to confirm that our sole occasional hedgehog was, actually, seven hedgehogs who all spent far more time in our garden than we did! It is remarkable to watch wild mammals feeding at such close quarters. The larger hogs tend to sit in the saucer and the smaller hoglets feed on the saucer’s edge. Studies have shown hogs which use feeding stations do not become dependent but use the manmade food as an additional foraging resource. Urban gardens, interconnecting pathway verges and untidy corners are increasingly seen as a vital habitat for hedgehogs. However, don’t forget to be careful when tidying gardens and preparing bonfires. Hedgehogs do need to hibernate, and such areas can be chosen by hedgehogs to spend the winter. Check all such areas carefully before commencing work. If hedgehogs are thinking about bedding down for the winter, bats currently have different ideas. Overhead, it is still possible to see bats foraging over
gardens at night, emerging from roosts shortly after dusk to hunt down night-flying moths and flies using their impressive sonar to help them catch and eat their prey on the wing. Due to a range of breeding mechanisms, female bats mate in autumn and have their young during the summer. Having a way to manage their breeding cycle is something bats have in common with badgers. Badgers can mate at any time of the year, but the foetus starts developing later (normally during December) so that the cubs are born in early February, when food is starting to become more abundant. The autumn is a time when badgers are still active, marking their sett entrances and territory edges with “dung pits” which are small depressions in the ground which are filled by individual badgers on a regular basis! Badgers use pathways alongside rivers and hedges which members of their social group have been using for decades. The autumn brings two advantages for naturalists interested in badgers – badger prints can be found more easily because the ground vegetation has died back, and the autumn is usually wet allowing mammal prints to be formed. Look for badger prints, pathways, and dung pits during your autumn walks - badger prints are characterised by having four obvious toes and claw marks and a noticeable heel.

BOURNE TOWN FC FIXTURES 2021 / 22 Bourne Town Football Club was Est in 1883 and is a community club run by volunteers who form the club’s committee. The aim of the football club is to provide opportunities for local people to play football for their local team and to ensure top quality football coaching is available to all teams playing under the Bourne Town Football Club name. Bourne Town Football Club strive to be an important part of the local community, by working alongside other clubs and organisations to promote football in the local area. The committee members at Bourne Town FC have been very busy during the last 10 months updating the facilities at the club with the whole clubhouse repainted, a new outside patio going in and finally putting in new windows which has transformed the clubhouse. All this has been funded through some grants given to the club and sponsorship money from all our sponsors last year. Without the loyal support we wouldn’t have been able to do so many upgrades which will give everyone a better experience during the 21/22 season.
Anyone keen to join the football club committee, please reach out to us on the details below

NEW PLAY SET FOR KEY THEATRE
E
astern Angles will bring brand new theatre to local audiences with Our White Skoda Octavia being performed at Peterborough’s Key Theatre on November 5th and 6th as part of a month-long tour.
Written by Shamser Sinha, this moving play shines a light on the struggles of contemporary life as one family juggles bills, dreams and taxi-driving schemes. It’s said it was inspired by conversations with taxidrivers and residents of Peterborough and Ipswich held in 2018 as part of an Arts Council funded research project. Set in a small town in the East of England, just before the credit crunch of 2007, Amjad decides to take up taxi-driving. His days take on the rhythm of a drum. But when money is tight and Rabia’s stifled ambitions hang heavy in the air, even the songs of John Denver or the scent of a Chitral rose are not enough to mend the cracks. Shamser Sinha said: “Part of who we are is in other people, and part of us is in them. No more so than
with families and the places they live. I guess that was my inspiration.” Spanning over a decade, Our White Skoda Octavia follows the Afridi family as they try to remain optimistic in the face of relationship troubles, health difficulties and financial worries. An atmospheric tabla drumscape accompanies them through to their story’s bittersweet conclusion. Creative producer Karen Goddard added: “It’s been really fascinating to see how the story has evolved to include so many aspects of family life, it has a real mix of humour and poignancy in it which I hope people will enjoy.” To find out more and book your tickets visit www.easternangles.co.uk

DIRECTORY BUSINESS FEATURE OF THE MONTH:
PETE'S PONDS: FOR THE COMPLETE PACKAGE
P
ete Burlton has kept ponds for all his life and his hobby turned into a passion. So much so that he decided to develop what had, for several years, been a part-time business into his full-time employment over three years ago. Based in Pointon, north of Bourne, but covering a wide area of South Lincolnshire and adjoining counties, Pete’s Ponds carry out all types of pond maintenance, including new and total rebuilds, and this time of the year there will be plenty of springtime cleaning and maintenance needing to be carried out. He also repairs ponds and fits new liners, whilst also offering a pond clearance service, which
sees Pete’s Ponds accepting unwanted fish of all breeds and sizes. To complete the “full package” for fish enthusiasts, Pete also provides fish health checks, and has a range of new and second-hand equipment for sale. See the wide range of what Pete’s Ponds can do for you by visiting his Facebook page @Petespondclearances
