Welcome to your December issue... A very warm welcome to this, our last issue of 2021.

A

s a new year draws closer, it’s time to look back and reflect on what has been another particularly challenging year for many.

Mass vaccinations against Covid-19 have certainly slowed down the pandemic’s deadly progress, and we have managed to return to a form of normality. Next year may even see some of us searching for our passports and getting stir-crazy in airport queues again! Huge thanks go to everyone who has helped us in any way this year, especially our advertisers and contributors, with their regular features, wonderful advice, and suggestions. But it is you, our readers, who make everything worthwhile for us, so many thanks to you all. Best wishes for Christmas and for 2022 – good luck, but most importantly, good health!

Claire x

Let me be the first to wish you all good health and happiness for Christmas and the new year. Just in case your crackers haven’t got any cracking jokes in them, try these for sighs! The police called and asked where my sons had been between 3 and 5. I told them, “Headstart Nursery”.

BESPOKE TRE ATMENTS A

Be a Cracker This Chri Another year has passed and this time, no Covid restrictions are in place to stop us socialising with family and friends. The masks are well and truly off and here, at DEEP-IN AESTHETICS, we are offering more treatments than ever to tempt you into that makeover, in time for the festive season.

W

e have invested and completed training in many new areas of aesthetics, ranging from our everyday anti-wrinkle treatments and dermal fillers to more advanced skin boosters, such as the PROFHILO and JALUPRO options.

3 areas of anti-wrinkle treatment £200

These treat all fine lines and are the only fillers known to improve skin tone, hydration, and give an amazing facial glow within three to five days of your appointment. They are called “liquid gold” for a reason! Both smokers’ lines and the fine lines which occur around the eyes are synonymous with ageing. Jalupro has produced fantastic results in reversing these signs and has proven to be our most popular treatment by far. We also offer the injectable dermal filler, RADIESSE, which is hand rejuvenation at its best, allowing your hands to match your face in terms of ageing. It treats sun-damaged, wrinkly, veiny hands, allowing the correction of volume loss. This provides an immediate lift and tightens the skin, lasting up to a year or more.

(frown lines, forehead, crow’s feet)

Furthermore, we offer the usual lip augmentation which allows volume and shape to be restored. Again, this is something that we tend to lose as

we age and even a small amount of lip filler can create amazing results, with clients coming back for a little top-up because they love the aesthetic it creates. Alistair has also undertaken an advanced master class in lip and perioral treatments to offer a more bespoke technique.

Profhilo BEFORE

‘Cheek fillers’, the newest addition to our treatment list, have been very well received by our clientele. Naturally, as we get older, the face tends to become squarer as volume is lost. By strategically administering filler in this area, it adds volume and returns the cheeks to a higher, fuller, and more youthful position. The results are immediate and can last anything up to eighteen months. AQUALYX is a stand-alone product and has proven to be a massive success … with all clients reporting fat loss and weight loss, especially on areas that they have found difficult to reduce through diet and exercise. Stubborn areas of fat are subjected to a high volume of injections, which are all pain-free, contouring and tightening the skin as they go with no downtime needed. They are simple, effective, and produce dramatic results within two to three treatments. Once the cells have been treated, they are permanently gone which is another great incentive to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

TRAVEL VACCINATIONS AND HEALTH ADVICE SERVICE HOW IT WORKS - YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED!

1 WHY MAY I NEED TO BE VACCINATED?

If you’re about to travel outside of the UK, you may need to be vaccinated before you set off for your trip. The childhood vaccination programme in the UK protects you from a number of diseases, but you may need extra vaccinations or antimalarials if you’re planning on visiting certain parts of the world.

2 HOW CAN WE HELP?

Getting vaccinated can help prevent you from getting ill if you’re exposed to diseases which we don’t normally have in the UK. We can help you understand how to keep your risks low while abroad and help you work out which vaccinations and antimalarials you may want to consider depending on things like: • Which regions you’ll be visiting • What activities you’ll be doing • Your age and general health Some travel vaccinations may be needed several weeks before departure. Ideally you should see us six to eight weeks before travelling, but we may still be able to help if you’re leaving sooner, even days before for travel.

3 WHAT VACCINATIONS ARE AVAILABLE? Cholera ● Hepatitis A ● Hepatitis B ● Japanese encephalitis ● Meningitis ACWY ● Rabies ● Tick-borne encephalitis ● Typhoid ● Yellow fever ● And many more ●

ix members of the Deepings Swimming Club Masters squad travelled to Sheffield recently to compete at the National Masters Championships at Ponds Forge. The team achieved a multitude of personal bests (PBs) and capped a fine competition with two bronze medals.

Alice Grant swam a new PB in the 100m butterfly to finish third in the 55-59yrs age group, while Kerys Arundell obliterated her 200m backstroke PB by 15 seconds to claim bronze in the 30-35yrs age group. Further outstanding swims and several PBs came from Jackii Crockett (in the 60-64yrs age group) and from the men’s team of Paul Smith-Shelton (50-54yrs age group), Chris Orchard (60-64yrs age group) and Tony Baskeyfield (65-69yrs age group).

Liberty Partnership are delighted to launch

‘The Liberty Lunch’ to celebrate our community champions and those people that go the extra mile

BY RICHARD ASH CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AND DIRECTOR You may know one of those ‘champions’ who always helps where they can or goes that extra mile for a neighbour, a stranger or a friend, and if you do then we would like to hear from you. Our plan is to offer a modest reward of lunch out at a local pub, diner, coffee shop or eatery up to the value of £100. We would ask that this offer is taken up locally to support our fantastic local businesses. We will select a monthly ‘champion’ from any nominations we receive. When contacting us, we would ask that you say who they are, how you feel they have positively contributed towards our community, and provide their contact information, having asked their permission to do so. Please see this as being a good thing, something to celebrate, a way in which we at Liberty Partnership can celebrate our community. Sadly, we will not be able to recognise everyone, which we hope you all understand.

2021: The Year to Protect You and Your Family

A

ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING DIRECTOR WILL AND PROBATE SERVICES

t the start of this year, it seemed appropriate to spend the year encouraging people to get their affairs in order and … guess what – it worked! During 2021, more families than ever before were helped by us and, if you were one of them, I would simply like to say thank you for trusting us with your planning.

best gift you could give your children is for you to sort out your will. The things that we get to deal with during December tend to be stuff that simply can’t wait, helping families dealing with a death of a relative, or drawing up legal documents for those at the very end of their lives.

December is a funny month; nobody wants to write their will or sort out their Power of Attorney because there are more important things to concentrate on – we get that. I am not about to tell you that the best present you could actually get your parents is a Power of Attorney or the

I will be back in January with what we can do for you in 2022. Don’t forget that we are here for you if anything urgent pops up, or if you do want to arrange that very unusual Christmas present!

But it’s not all doom and gloom though. December is the month when we get to have a good rest and enjoy the festivities with our families. So, that’s how I and all the team here at Will & Probate Services would like to end this month’s article and 2021, by wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Nature

Don’t forget the Robin! [ by David Denman ]

We can’t let Christmas go by without mentioning the robin. There are many stories as to why this species is associated with Christmas. My favourite is that postmen in Victorian Britain wore red tunics and were called robins. When they came to deliver Christmas mail, the association of robins and Christmas was made!

R

obins sing for most months of the year and their melancholic, wistful song can be heard during the winter. Males can be very aggressive – I have on occasions had to separate two robins on the ground when locked in what looked like a fight to the finish. I have seen a robin attack its reflection in a patio door. Robins work well in partnership with humans and follow gardeners in search of uncovered insects to eat, and love to nest in sheds and garages. In keeping with the Christmas spirit, the best present your friendly garden robin can possibly receive is a plate of mealworms. Robins are especially fond of mealworms and will do anything for the treat. If you want to go one step further, it is perfectly possible to hand feed your robin mealworms and this can be achieved after a few weeks – I can guarantee that this Christmas present will be very well received! ……………………….............................. Our star hedgehogs from last month’s issue are now infrequent visitors to our garden and I have not seen a butterfly for at least two weeks. However, there are many species which are trying to make use of every last minute of daylight, as we approach the end of the year.

Early mornings bring hard-working teams of blue, great and amazingly agile, long-tailed tits inspecting every tree branch for insects and other morsels. Working as a well drilled team, the idea is that if an insect is disturbed and not eaten by one bird, another bird will have the meal. The same principle is adopted by groups of starlings when probing lawns as a winter flock. Visiting winter wildfowl increases the bird diversity on Deepings’ rivers and lakes. Most dramatic are the Whooper swans. Their mostly yellow bill separates them from the other wintering visiting swan, the Bewick swan, which is smaller and has more black on the bill. The mute swan which we see all through the year has an orange bill. The wonderful “honk” of the Whooper is one of the best winter sounds and was the inspiration for Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony! Whilst most species are just content to feed and find shelter in winter, certain insects are still progressing the art of propagating their species! Mid-winter sunlight in gardens and field margins can generate a dancing mating cloud of midges, Winter gnats, to be precise. The cloud dances within the shafts of sunlight and is made up of males trying to attract females.

School News

T

Deeping St James Community Primary School he Year 6 pupils from Deeping St James Community Primary went to Stibbington recently to experience what it was like to be an evacuee in 1940. They had a fantastic day and the children really got into role - hence the sad faces at Wansford station!

They enjoyed walking around the village, seeing where their real-life characters lived during the war and what the buildings of Stibbington were used for. One of their highlights was sitting in the classroom for lessons and writing with an ink pen. The air raid siren and sitting in the bomb shelter, singing songs, was a scary experience for some. They loved playing with the old toys and learning how to use them though. The experience helped them empathise with what it was like for children their age and has been a valuable part of their learning about World War Two.

Northborough Primary School are often under tables because the air raid siren has gone off again! We all joined in the dancing for Children in Need. We raised lots of money for children who need our help. Year 5 learned about Divali in the best way possible by hearing about their friends’ personal experiences and tasting food! Foundation stage have written some fantastic work describing what they have learned about it.

We love the new markings on our playground chosen by the children. This one above is Laiba’s favourite… We have learned lots! Year 1 took a trip down memory lane during their topic ‘Memory Box’, Year 2 have been finding out about the village, Year 3 have shot into the Bronze Age, with Year 4 just ahead learning about the Romans. Year 6 have studied WW1 and 2 and 20

Mulled Wine

This festive favourite is easy to prepare and tastes like Christmas in a glass!

Method Ingredients Serves 6-8 people

2 bottles of inexpensive red wine 100g soft, light brown sugar 3 oranges, cut into 6 wedges 3 lemons, cut into 6 wedges 500ml orange juice 4 tsp whole cloves 2 tsp mixed spice 8 tea bags 2 whole cinnamon sticks 150g semi-dried prunes

• Place all the ingredients into a large saucepan (not aluminium) and gently heat, stirring occasionally so the sugar does not stick. • You’ll need 10 minutes preparation time, followed by 20 minutes cooking time. • Do not boil, or the mulled wine will lose its kick, as the alcohol evaporates! • Using a ladle, carefully pour the wine into sturdy glasses. Include a wedge or two of fruit, and a prune, in each glass.

Top Tips

• You can give extra spice to the drink by adding a little extra sugar and a dash or two of brandy. • A white wine version is also an option, if your guests are not red wine lovers.

Mortgage Advice

Navigating the Home Buying Process

B

ADVICE FROM LUCA PALUMBO, MORTGAGE & PROTECTION CONSULTANT

uying a new home is an exciting time, but it can also be a little intimidating if you don’t have the right knowledge and support to help you through the process.

When you are navigating the home buying process for the first time, there are bound to be some obstacles to overcome. But many of the most common first-time-buyer mistakes can be avoided if you are aware of them.

1

Avoid Mortgage Rejection A common mistake is applying for a mortgage without first checking your credit report. This could lead to your application being rejected for issues that are easy to fix. You can obtain your credit report from a service such as Experian or Equifax. If there are incorrect items on your credit report, you can ask for them to be removed. If there are items that are correct, but not representative of your current financial situation (for example, an unpaid bill during a previous period of unemployment), you can also ask to add a notice of correction.

2

Avoid Going Over Budget Often, first-time-buyers have saved enough for their deposit but haven’t considered all the extra costs which put a strain on their budget, things such as solicitors’ fees or Stamp Duty Land Tax if the property is over the threshold.

3

Avoid Costly Property Problems As a first-time-buyer, you might not be aware of all the things that can go wrong with a home, and they’re not always visible. An old boiler may need to be replaced, for example, costing thousands. It can help to take someone with more experience along to viewings, but they too might miss some issues. A professional survey, though it will cost several hundred pounds to arrange, will identify any potential issues and could save you a lot of money over the long term.

4

Avoid Going Through it All Alone Obtaining expert financial advice can help you to understand how much you can realistically afford to borrow and repay, so you don’t overstretch yourself. A professional mortgage broker can help you create a plan to save a bigger deposit, or a budget so that you can afford all your monthly mortgage repayments while continuing to save for the future. They will help you find an appropriate mortgage deal to minimise your monthly repayments and can give you access to a wider range of products than if you were to research the market yourself. It is also likely they will be connected to a professional network within the sector, and they may even be able to offer products that aren’t available to the general public. You will also be guided through the process of applying for a mortgage to avoid time-wasting rejections, get help with paperwork, and you won’t have to handle the application. In many cases, firsttime-buyers will easily recoup the cost of this expert mortgage advice in the savings it brings them.

*Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage*

Your Garden

December Gardening Tips

W

e are approaching the shortest day and moving towards the months that bring the worst weather for the gardener.

Weather predictions for this winter are influenced by La Nina and show that we may be in for a cold December, with persistent snow. Time to sit back with a warm toddy and plan next year’s crops and reflect on what went well this year. Now is also a good time to clean tools, seed trays, pots, and other equipment as it will help prevent any diseases carrying over to infect next year’s seedlings. Also give the shed a good tidy out and clean. Some gardeners put their allotment or vegetable patch “to bed” for the winter by covering the ground in plastic sheeting or weed suppressant to keep weeds at bay: it also keeps the ground a little warmer for early spring planting and prevents heavy rain from washing away the soil’s nutrients. Before putting the covering down, it is worth digging the plot well and adding plenty of well-rotted organic material. You can harvest lots of vegetables for Christmas plates, including parsnips, leeks, and winter cabbages, all of which can be left in the ground until you need them. It is difficult to harvest crops from frozen soil, so if temperatures plummet, cover the soil with straw. Harvest Brussels sprouts when they are around one inch in diameter, before they ‘blow open.’ Pick them from the base of the plant up, twisting them away from

4

the plant. If you have grown potatoes for Christmas, they should be ready now. Hopefully, you will have plenty of crops to store through the winter and it is important that they are stored correctly. Cabbages can be hung in net bags; potatoes in thick paper sacks; carrots and parsnips between slightly moist layers of sand (making sure they are not touching) and, provided pumpkins and squashes have been properly cured, they should keep well if ventilated well and laid on straw or shredded paper. Other jobs to do this month are: • Continue topping up compost and leaf mould bins, making sure that you burn or discard any plant material that looks diseased. • You can still plant garlic if the soil is not frozen. • Onion seeds can be sown in trays or pots in a gentle heat towards the end of the year. • Manure the vegetable plot, using well-rotted manure, no need to dig in. • Earth up Brussels sprouts stems to keep them secure from strong winds and remove any brown or yellow leaves; this will prevent the spread of grey mould. • Make sure your winter brassicas are netted to prevent pigeons eating them and check for, and repair, any holes. I wish you all a happy Christmas and a healthy and fruitful New Year!

Buying Something Advertised at an Incorrect Price

Stay Merry, Not Miserable in the Run-up to Christmas

With Christmas around the corner, we take you through some of your options if something you want to buy is advertised at the wrong price.

‘TIS the season to be jolly – but as we prepare for the season of goodwill and the long-awaited chance to spend it with family and friends, not everyone shares the Christmas spirit. The past months may have changed our shopping habits, as many of us now favour buying our goods online, but it has also seen the scammers becoming more sophisticated.

BUYING IN A SHOP Your legal rights in a shop will depend on whether you’ve paid for the item yet or not. If you take an item to the till and are told the price on the tag or label is a mistake, you don’t have a right to buy the item at the lower price. You could still try asking the seller to honour the price. The same applies if you see an item advertised anywhere for a lower price than the one on the price tag. If the shop sold you an item at a lower cost than they meant to, you don’t have to give it back - they’re only legally entitled to ask you for more money if you’d talked about the price and they ended up charging you much less instead. If you realise you’ve paid more for an item than it was advertised for at the time, ask for the shop to refund the difference between what you paid and what was advertised. SHOPPING ONLINE Your legal rights depend on whether or not you have a ‘contract’. Depending on the company’s terms and conditions, you’ll have legal rights (and a contract). You’ll need to find the company’s terms and conditions to find out where you stand. If you have a contract, the company can’t usually cancel your order, even if they realise they’ve sold you something at the wrong price. They’ll only be able to cancel it if it was a genuine and honest mistake on their part that you should have noticed. If you don’t have a contract and someone realises they’ve told you the wrong price, they can cancel your order. For further information, please call Adviceline on 0808 278 7996 to speak to a trained adviser.

COVID-19: Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire has maintained operations throughout the pandemic, increasing capacity through telephone and online services. The telephone advice line is open, Monday to Friday 09.00am- 4.00pm.

Deepings

By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades

Protect yourself from falling victim to online shopping or auction fraud: • If you’re making a purchase from a website or person you don’t know and trust, carry out some research first. Read reviews or check the seller’s feedback before going ahead. • Use a payment method that offers buyer protection, such as a credit card if you have one, as most major credit card providers will help you get your money back if the item is faulty or damaged, or if it never arrives. • Make sure you have a strong password for your email. You should also enable two-factor authentication (2FA), where possible, which gives your online account additional protection by double checking that you really are the person you claim to be, when logging in. • Be extra vigilant using Marketplace, eBay and Gumtree as these are also on the hit list for criminals. At home, seasonal security is essential: For opportunist thieves, visible presents under the tree, open car boots full of shopping, while loads are being taken into the house, and even the possibility of an unlocked garage or parcels left behind bins, are rich pickings. Remember to check your alarm and never leave doors, windows or garages unlocked. • Don’t leave presents in full view – either in the home or in the back seat of the car. • Keep a light on indoors and outdoors if you are out visiting friends or family. • Consider fitting motion detector security lighting. If you are expecting parcels or deliveries whilst you are out, try and arrange for them to be delivered to an alternative address instead of them being hidden. If buying bikes and / or electronic equipment for Christmas – mark them with your postcode. For any home security improvements, we have locksmiths, alarm and CCTV installers, electricians and many other traders who can help. Visit www.safelocaltrades.com. DE CE M BE R 2 0 2 1

Another reason to support our High Street this Christmas BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

A

s Christmas closes in on us, and many are suffering financially after a couple of tough years, I wanted to just remind you to make sure that any electrical things you buy meet British standards. It can sometimes be tempting to buy things online that are better priced than those that are on our high street, sometimes even knowing that they are not genuine or that they may not meet British standards. I have often been asked to fit or look at electrical items that have been bought from bargain priced websites. Some of the things I have found have been dangerous; we have even written reports to help the buyer recover their money but, unfortunately, this is often unsuccessful. We have been asked to fit lights and the most basic

Domestic

principles of the electrical safety regulations are not even met, and what starts as somebody trying to save some pennies ends up costing them much more when they are unable to return the item and then still have to purchase it somewhere else. This is actually the ‘best-case scenario’; the other scenario is that that item is used without any concerns being identified, and then resulting in an electric shock, or even a fire that devastates your home. We can so easily be pulled into trying to save money as expectations are so high for Christmas today, but it is much more important that you and your family stay safe. So, shop safe this Christmas and make sure that everything you buy meets British safety standards. Finally, a reminder to please make sure you enter our Christmas Lights Competition! Details and categories are on our social media channels and website.
