JANUARY 2022

Welcome to your January issue... So here we go into 2022 with new year’s resolutions made and high hopes for the future.

O

n behalf of our hardworking team at Discovering Magazines, I would just like to wish you all a fabulous 2022, with good health and success in whatever lies in front of you, your family, and your friends. I know many readers who see their monthly ‘Discovering’ magazine almost like an old friend, dropping by to keep them in touch with events in their town and activities to come; to keep them up to date with advice from our many contributors; and to entertain with our quizzes and competitions. Why not just settle down with a drink and relax with that friend and enjoy our offering this month? All the very best for 2022!

Claire x

At the time of writing, the final few days of 2021 are providing us sports fans with enough excitement to take us into the new year with memories to last a lifetime. No, not the mighty Posh actually winning a game, but I refer instead to the Abu Dhabi Formula One duel between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. Final race out of twenty-two ok, but final seconds of the final lap? You couldn’t have scripted that. Let’s hope 2022 can reproduce something as exciting; how about the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, with Hamilton’s England beating Verstappen’s Netherlands on penalties in the final? Finally, a touch of sporting mirth: I always used to get caught out of position when playing in goal. I was forever being told to “think outside the box”! I was on the boundary, daydreaming and pondering about the weight of a cricket ball … then it hit me! Enjoy the read!

Blast That Fat... For Good!!

W

The new year usually means resolutions and promises to eat healthily and exercise more regularly. hether you’re committing to home workouts while the gyms are closed or out pounding the pavements, you may find that, no matter how strict you may be in trying to sculpt your body, there are certain pockets of fat that just won’t budge. Here at Deepin Aesthetics we have the answer for you!!

FAT-DISSOLVING OFFERS: 1 session: £120 3 sessions: £315 6 sessions: £500 (saving £220) BEFORE

Hormones, age, and our genetic makeup also determine the shape of our body, and you can’t spot-reduce fat, so even if you’re counting calories and losing fat, it may not necessarily be coming off the areas you want it to. That’s where Aqualyx treatment can help. Aqualyx works by attaching to fatty deposits and breaking them down over time. The body is then able to naturally dissolve the fat and flush it out through the lymphatic system. These fat cells are then permanently removed. The injections are best used to treat small deposits of fat such as under the chin, thighs, arms, love handles and the stomach. Results are fast and can be seen after just one treatment, but it does vary from person to person and individual treatment plans can be discussed. Book now and let’s get you started on that new year transformation.

DISCR L O C AT E E T ION

As a 50 year old who is very nervous of needles I was pleasantly surprised by my experience. I was made to feel relaxed with full explanation of what was happening at each stage. Have had bad experiences before I felt Alistair and Julie really knew what they are talking about. I felt in safe hands and could not have wished for better services. To top it all my results are great, I will definitely be recommending Alistair and Jule to my friends."

On the Piste?

Don’t Let Your Muscle Memory Let You Down!

W

ith many resorts hopefully reopening this season, we are all keen to get back out onto the slopes after at least one winter without any skiing or snowboarding. But will you still remember what you’re doing when you get out there or, perhaps, are you hoping that your “muscle memory” kicks in?

In previous lessons, your instructor most likely emphasised the importance of position and how to stop and turn. However, over time we are prone to becoming complacent and think we’re better than we are. After a long break from the slopes, it’s best to remind your muscles of the right technique before heading out again.

While some may think “snowplough” and “falling leaf” are like ‘riding a bike’, refreshing and repeating the correct technique will ultimately improve your muscle memory. When was the last time you had a ski or snowboard lesson? Have you ever thought about private tuition? Maintaining the correct technique makes skiing and snowboarding easier; and can also reduce muscle soreness, improve your overall ability, and make you safer on the slopes. Even the slightest adjustment to your method can give you more control over your skis and board, which in turn boosts your confidence, making your holiday the best one yet. Even as someone who has had years out on the slopes, it is always worth having a refresher lesson, and now is the best time to hone and develop these skills. Don’t have your muscle memory let you down this holiday and result in unnecessary aches and pains! Tallington Lakes Ski and Snowboard Centre offer private lessons for both skiing and snowboarding, and also run the Junior Snow School for children aged 5-11 years. For more information and to book, please call 01778 381154.

A Warm Welcome for All Ages

A

mongst the many compliments received by Deeping St James hair salon owner, Hollie Deboo, those that give her the most satisfaction refer to the salon’s ability to cater for ladies of all ages. “Ours is a very diverse team of stylists,” explains Hollie, “and customers comment on how unintimidating it is to see such a wide range of women, young and not so young!”

Hollie and her sister, Kayleigh Gibbs, took over the running of this popular salon on July 4th, 2020, and such has been their success recently, that a new member, Libby, has joined the already established team of Julie, Karen, and Sheena. Whilst Kayleigh oversees the ‘behind

BEL

the scenes’ operation, Hollie devotes her time to providing a first-rate service, to be expected from someone with over fifteen years’ experience, having won national awards during her time with ‘Michael John Hair Artwork’ in Peterborough.

Chri

The team offer the full range of hair cutting, colouring, and styling options, (including ‘wedding hair-ups’ for the bridal party) and Hollie particularly enjoys creative colouring and balayage. She is also very keen on the in-house weekly training sessions she runs to ensure that newcomer Libby can maximise her potential, which has already seen Libby establish a regular clientele.

As befitting a top salon, HD Hair are stockists for ‘Wella Colour’ and ‘ghd’ (Good Hair Day) luxury products, and its location on Douglas Road means that free car parking is available right outside the salon.

Will & Probate Services

Are You A Trustee? Urgent Action Required!

ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING DIRECTOR WILL AND PROBATE SERVICES

Everyone needs to read this because you may be a trustee without realising it.

T

owards the end of 2021, the government confirmed that the registration of all trusts would become compulsory. New trusts need to be registered with HMRC within six months of being set up. That’s all pretty straightforward and will become a part of the services that we and firms like us provide. The issue, and it is a big one, is that all existing trusts need to be registered with HMRC before September 1st, 2022. You may not know if you are a trustee, so here are some of the most likely scenarios: ● Your parents have put their property in a trust.

This might be called a home protection plan, an asset protection trust, a family protection plan. To be honest, they have hundreds of different names.

● One of your parents passed away and their

share of the property went into trust. This could be a discretionary trust, a protective property trust or a life interest trust.

● You have gifted some money to a child to buy

a property and have a deed of trust in place. Many people have used a Deed of Trust to protect the contribution of the “bank of mum and dad”. These will need to be registered.

● You are managing funds on behalf of a

disabled child. You are a trustee and probably need to register.

● You are saving money in a specific account for

children or grandchildren. It could be that you are acting as a trustee and will need to register.

These are not the only situations where your trust must be registered with HMRC; you may have investments in trust or have done some of your Inheritance Tax planning by using trusts, and there are many more. If you need to talk to someone about registering your trust, then give us a call on 01778 252301 and we will advise you of your options. If you don’t act, then HMRC have also announced a penalty regime that will apply to everyone who doesn’t register their trust by the deadline!

Hallam Travel: Taking you places since the 1990s By Lorraine Hallam

W

e have been organising days out since the early 1990s when the children were small, starting with ‘Disney on Ice’, so that they could share the experience with their extended family and friends, gradually adding other ones for them to enjoy, such as Legoland, Woburn Safari Park, and Cadbury World. On taking over the local Girls’ Brigade company in 1994 we turned these ideas into fundraising events for the Girls’ Brigade, opening them up to the local community. I resigned from The Girls’ Brigade in 2005, but people within the local community still wanted us to organise days out for them, so in 2006 we started building it up to what it is today and are now trading as Hallam Travel.

Liberty Partnership are delighted to launch

‘The Liberty Lunch’ to celebrate our community champions and those people that go the extra mile

BY RICHARD ASH CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AND DIRECTOR You may know one of those ‘champions’ who always helps where they can or goes that extra mile for a neighbour, a stranger or a friend, and if you do then we would like to hear from you. Our plan is to offer a modest reward of lunch out at a local pub, diner, coffee shop or eatery up to the value of £100. We would ask that this offer is taken up locally to support our fantastic local businesses. We will select a monthly ‘champion’ from any nominations we receive. When contacting us, we would ask that you say who they are, how you feel they have positively contributed towards our community, and provide their contact information, having asked their permission to do so. Please see this as being a good thing, something to celebrate, a way in which we at Liberty Partnership can celebrate our community. Sadly, we will not be able to recognise everyone, which we hope you all understand.

School News

Northborough Primary School Year 1 took a ‘trip down Memory Lane’ during their topic ‘Memory Box’; Year 2 have been finding out about the village; Year 3 have shot into the Bronze Age and have completed some fieldwork at Nine Bridges and performed to parents on their ukuleles; Year 4 are just ahead in time, learning about the Romans; Year 5 have been to the Space Centre; and Year 6 have studied World Wars One and Two.

The oldest and youngest children in our school traditionally light the tree and the first Advent candle. Reverend Mark Aaron led our assemblies for us.

We all joined in the dancing for “Children in Need”. We raised a fantastic sum of £315.55 for children who need our help.

If you have a child due to start school in September 2022, why not come along and see our wonderful school? Please visit www.northboroughschool.co.uk for further details.

We embraced “Odd Sock Day” and celebrated diversity in “Anti-Bullying Week”.

LANGTOFT PRIMARY SCHOOL The children have been lucky to enjoy virtual authors’ visits from the CBBC presenter, Maddie Moate, and children’s author, Nick Sharratt. Maddie shared her first children’s book “Stuff”, which is full of mindbursting facts. The children in Reception and Key Stage 1 heard Nick Sharratt read his funny, festive tale “Oh No! Shark in the Snow!”. Years 5 and 6 pupils competed in a friendly School Games’ Netball Competition at Bourne Grammar School, plus our Years 3 and 4 pupils took part in a Tag Rugby Competition. In February, the children will enjoy a whole-school Arts Week. For more information please contact the school on 01778 343419 or e-mail enquiries@langtoft.lincs. sch.uk.

Deeping St James Community Primary School

What is the School Council at DSJ doing? Eady, a Year 6 pupil at the school, supplies the answer!

“Our amazing School Council at Deeping St James consists of children from year 2 upwards. We meet every Friday to discuss things that we can do around the school to improve it. School Councillors from each year group bring their classes ideas and share them to make it not just our thoughts on how to make the school better, but everyone’s. The first fun day we hosted was for ‘Children in Need’. Everyone wore non-school uniform and Pudsey accessories. We all did a Conga around the running track and into ‘sharing assembly’. We had the Strictly Theme Tune playing in the background.. We raised £236.07 at this event for Children in Need!! The second School Council event was Christmas Jumper Day. We raised £90 for Save the Children and £90 for School Council Projects. The School Council are now deciding on the projects for the future.” Fantastic reporting Eady – there could be a job for you on this magazine whenever you’re ready! – Ed. Pupils and parents got into the festive spirit at the annual Christmas market on Friday December 3rd. The event featured fairground rides, festive stalls, visits to Father Christmas, games

and a raffle which had fifty prizes, kindly donated by local businesses. Altogether, a massive £1,310.61 was raised for the school! This event was organised by The Friends of Deeping St James School PTA. JANUARY 2022

rom a squad of forty, twenty-six Deepings swimmers came away with eighty medals at a thrilling open meet in Spalding in November. A series of outstanding performances resulted in a final medal haul of nineteen gold, thirtyfour silver and twenty-seven bronze. Nine-year-old Lucy Jenkinson bagged eight medals. Lucy was one of six Deepings swimmers in the youngest age category, and they all showed exciting promise for the future, especially Florence Carlson, Olivia King and Olivia Laud. Meanwhile, two nineyear-old boys (Ashton Hunter and Oliver Clarke) gained medal success. In the girls 10yrs age group, honours went to Orla Bailey and Sophie Robinson. Four

Cheesy Leeks & Ham Quick and simple to make, and low in carbohydrates - this satisfying and tasty dish is perfect for the new year! You can also try serving it with jacket potatoes... just bake them in the oven for forty minutes before cooking the leeks, then split them open and serve the leeks on top.

Method

Ingredients

8 small leeks, white part only 8 slices cooked ham 100g grated Cheddar cheese 2 tbsp Dijon mustard 6 tbsp crème fraîche (full or half-fat)

20

• Heat oven to 200°C/fan180°C/gas 6. Cook the leeks in a pan of boiling salted water for four to five minutes or until just tender. Drain and cool under a cold tap to stop them from cooking any further, then drain again well and pat dry on kitchen paper. • Wrap each leek in a slice of ham, then arrange, side-by-side, in a large baking dish. Mix the cheddar in a bowl with the mustard and crème fraîche, until well combined. Season to taste. Spread over the leeks, then bake for fifteen to twenty minutes until bubbling and golden brown. Serve at once with plenty of crusty bread to mop up the juices.

Skating on the River Welland

Local History

P

(KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE)

rolonged frosts meant hardship for farm labourers in the nineteenth century, when work on the land ceased and they received no pay, but if the river at Deeping St James froze hard enough, sport and charity could be combined. Skating matches were organised for men out of work and subscriptions collected to provide prizes of meat and groceries. The races were divided into heats, with two skaters competing at once along a straight course marked with barrels and a flag at either end, which they had to circle without dislodging it. Each heat winner went into the next round until eventually an overall champion was declared. In December 1879, “winter set in with unusual severity” in the local area, with eight inches of snow and the temperature dropped to two degrees Fahrenheit (minus sixteen Celsius). Hundreds of people took advantage of the ice to skate along the Welland at Deeping. Henry Buck and James Fowler of Deeping St James were experienced amateur skaters at that time, together with Walter Woodward of Langtoft. By the age of twelve, Walter was already working as a cattle drover with his father, herding animals on foot for many miles between farms and

markets. They were all described as strong, wellframed young men, who competed fiercely against each other in the subscription races for labourers. In January 1881, it was reported that excellent amusement and sport took place between the upper locks and the bridge at Deeping St James, when about seven hundred people watched closely fought races. Prizes included two loaves of bread and 1s 6d (7.5p) for the winner of a single heat, with subsequent heat winners receiving cash and meat. A loaf was also given to each of the losers. Separate matches were held for boys who were rewarded with oranges. In the wider fen area, professional skating matches were held on the washes near Crowland and Cowbit, when low-lying fields flooded and froze during winter. Opportunities to skate on the Welland were less frequent. A long period of frost was needed to form ice on the deeper water, and winters in general were becoming milder. Exceptionally cold weather during January and February 1963 caused the river to freeze over for several weeks, allowing another generation to practise skating skills. One garage owner at Stamford, however, had bigger ambitions. Peter Fancourt contacted the Water Board and, after being told that the ice was around eleven inches thick and “strong enough to bear a fully-loaded brewer’s dray, drawn by four horses”, he drove a Mini up and down the Welland!

Nature

Songbirds, Otters and Murmurations of Starlings y David Denman ]

T

[ by David Denman ]

Happy New Year! The shortest day is now behind us, and you can feel the days getting longer! hose with an ear for such things may have detected early singing songbirds starting their annual song cycle. The repetitive song of the song thrush and the more melodic blackbird song are there to serenade us onto the spring.

Talking of song thrushes, my fellow professional ecologists have been busy digesting the latest “Birds of Conservation Concern 5” which was jointly published last month by a group of conservation bodies. Sadly, there are now more bird species in the red category, meaning they are experiencing a severe breeding decline. However, the song thrush has been moved from the red to the orange list where it was placed the last time this important list was published in 2014. So, whilst still declining, the song thrush’s rate of decline is now less pronounced. Several other species such as pied flycatchers and black redstarts have also moved from red to amber. The number of conservation successes is growing steadily. One of my favourite species on the “up” are otters and you can see them in local Deeping watercourses if you time your visits carefully. In the autumn, a dead otter was found on a road in the Northfields area of Market Deeping, some distance away from a suitable water course. The explanation of this apparently surprising observation is that otters often use roads and tracks at night to explore their home range. They are also able to cross roads when rivers are culverted and can cover 2km a night! We are also starting to see the rise of the urban otter, with sightings in the centre of Lincoln and Thetford.

The amazing social structure of starlings is a wonderful feature of our winter countryside. We all know about the evening murmurations which can be seen locally around the Maxey area. In order to form a large flock, you need lots of small flocks and these form in the gardens and parks of Market Deeping around mid-day with small social groups coming together and raiding bird tables ‘en masse’. They gather on aerials and in trees in mid-afternoon and, just as the light level starts to fall, there is a mass departure of many small flocks of starlings as they fly off to join their colleagues in the murmuration. Finally, if we do get cold weather this winter, please keep feeding the birds, but don’t forget their water. Birds need water for a variety of reasons but especially to help maintain their feathers. Poorly maintained feathers will not retain body heat as effectively as well preened feathers.

School News

Baston C of E Primary School In Year 5, we have been doing blackout poetry and also wrote poems on the theme ‘Choice’.

On December 8th, our Eco Group organised a ‘walk to school’ morning to promote sustainable travel. We had a brilliant turnout, despite the blustery, wet weather. Year 6 enjoyed a webinar with Amy Ball from the World Wildlife Fund on the topic of climate change. The session was informative and enjoyable, and they learned how to try to protect our planet. This term, Year 4s have been enjoying tag rugby and orienteering during their PE sessions. In tag rugby, we learnt how to keep possession of the ball using attacking skills, and enjoyed taking part in a class tag rugby tournament. In orienteering, we developed our problem-solving skills through a range of challenges. We learnt how to orientate a map, identify key symbols, and follow routes. Year 1 have been enjoying music and their outdoor learning lessons. The children led their partner to a tree; the aim of the task was to show empathy and respect towards each other and develop self-confidence.

Looking Back and Looking Forward

I

BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

t is now that time of year when I do a lot of reflection; I like to look back over the year and see what I have done successfully and what I have done that has not been quite as successful, to help me learn and grow as a person, and as a business owner.

This month, I want to reach out to sympathise with those who have struggled over the past almost two years. People never want to tell you if they are struggling, especially those in business. I understand, nobody wants you to think that their business has any issues, but all businesses have challenges at some point. It’s a rollercoaster, and this past year has been a ride and a half! I know we have had our issues, and at times it has felt like it would never end! So, I wanted to send people who have owned a business over lockdown, strength, and hope. As a business owner and employer who followed the team and then returned to work through lockdown with additional measures in place, it has been a challenge to keep up with the constantly changing guidance and restrictions; making sure you put any measures in place to keep the team and our clients safe; the HR and all the administration; and keeping up with the constantly changing diary. We had to change our whole system to a paperless one. We also had to make our engineers and clients safer, something that is a challenge when executed, even when you don’t need to do it at short notice! As a mum, I wanted to reach out to all of those who have had to home-school throughout lockdown, to those whose children have additional needs and have been struggling,

Domestic

silently, trying to get through with no support. There is no other option but to keep going. To those that have had to work whilst being a teacher and have ‘painted a smile on’ for Zoom whilst your ‘house falls down around your ears’. To all you new mums with lockdown babies, who cry if anybody looks at them because they’re not used to seeing other people. Both my sister, Kay, who runs the office, and I, had babies just after lockdown started, babies that were unable to meet for months, and neither of whom have ever been to a baby group. To all of you who have had Covid; to those that lost loved ones and to those still struggling and trying to recover but are feeling flat. Our family all had Covid at the same time, and whilst my littlest ended up in hospital, he bounced back very quickly. It took me a long time to feel normal again. 2022 owes us all big time, so please enjoy this year, and make sure that you make up for all the memory-making that has been missed out on. Happy New Year!

Mortgage Advice

Moving Home

B

ADVICE FROM LUCA PALUMBO, MORTGAGE & PROTECTION CONSULTANT

uying a property is usually the single most expensive purchase we’ll ever make, but what may surprise you is that, on average, we only spend around twentyfive minutes viewing a property before we decide to buy it!

1

To make the most out of your viewing, consider the following questions:

How much interest has the property attracted? If you’re the first potential buyer to view, you’re in a strong position to make an offer. If there have been several other viewings already, you might have some competition. Find out if there have been any previous offers that were rejected, and if the current owner is open to offers below the asking price. Remember that some negotiation is considered normal in the buying process.

like a garden shed, you’ll need to make that request. Similarly, if you’re buying a newly built property, find out if the developer will include the ‘white goods’ or if you’ll need to buy your own.

2

4 5

3

6

When is the property available? If you’re buying a newly built property, find out when the construction work is due to be completed so you can move in. If it’s a previously owned property, you’ll need to wait for the current owner to find a new home. This creates a chain, which can add time to the transaction and cause problems if other sales fall through. It’s often unavoidable, though, unless the property is inherited, or the owner is moving abroad.

What is included in the sale? There are no set rules regarding what a seller will leave in the property when they move out. So, you should establish this before making an offer. If all the ‘white goods’ (fridge, washing machine etc) are included, you might be able to make a higher offer. If there are items you don’t want to remain in the property,

Which way does the property face? It’s helpful to know which way the property is oriented, so you know if you’ll be able to enjoy the garden or balcony in the evening, or if the bedrooms are well lit in the mornings.

What are the neighbours like? With a newly built property, you won’t have the chance to find out about your future neighbours in advance. But, if you’re moving into a previously owned property, you should find out from the current owner if they’ve had any problems with their neighbours, such as noise.

What are the running costs? When you buy a home, the current owner or developer will provide you with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) that will rate the property’s energy efficiency and likely running costs. Newly built properties are usually cheaper to run. With a previously owned property, ask the owner how much they spend on bills to get a clear idea of how much your monthly expenditure will be.

*Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage*

When Your Payment Card Is Used Without Permission for a “Distance Sale”

Claim Your Electric Vehicle Home Charging Grant… NOW!

With sales upon us, we take you through what to do if your payment card is used for a sale of goods, services, or digital content, where there has been no face-to-face interaction (otherwise known as a “distance sale”). Contact your bank immediately. If the unauthorised payment was taken from your bank account for a purchase over the internet, by telephone, TV, or teletext, you may have a right to get your money back. Usually, the bank will have a team of investigators who investigate it for you. If you claim the use of the card was not authorised by you, it is for your bank to prove otherwise. The bank may be able to cancel the payment or put the money back into your account. If your card provider will not give you your money back, report them to Trading Standards.

When can’t you get your money back?

There are certain distance sale contracts that are not covered by the law. You would not automatically have the right to your money back if the fraudulent purchase was made for the following: fi nancial services, for example, insurance and banking. ● sale of land or buildings except for certain rental agreements. ● r ental agreements of three years or more (one year or more in Scotland). If your card has been used fraudulently for buying goods or services listed above, you should still contact your bank. They will probably investigate for you, but you may not be able to get your money back. ●

If you would like any more information or advice about this issue, please do not hesitate to call Adviceline on 0808 278 7996 to speak to a trained adviser.

COVID-19:

By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades FOR many, a new year signals change – and that could mean a new car, saving money and efforts to be kinder to the environment. With an electric car or van, you can achieve this, especially when it has been made even more affordable by a government grant towards a home charging point at your own home. With increasing consumer demand, greater availability of vehicles and government support, sales of electric vehicles are growing strongly in parallel to the development of UK charging point infrastructure. Consumers have until the end of March 2022 to apply for a government grant to help them make the change. The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) is a grant that provides a 75% contribution to the cost of one charge point and its installation. A grant cap is set at £350 (including VAT) per installation. The main requirement is that a person owns, leases, or has ordered a qualifying vehicle and has dedicated offstreet parking at their property. You can also apply for two charge points at the same property if you have two qualifying vehicles. The grant works by a customer choosing an EVHS installer to install their charge point, who then applies on the customer’s behalf. The installer will bill the customer for the price of the installation, less the grant amount they have applied for. Customers cannot apply directly for an EVHS grant. Safe Local Trades have members who are Office for Low Emissions Vehicles (OLEV) authorised installers and can apply for the government grant on behalf of customers in and around Peterborough. For a reliable and professional service, contact them on www.safelocaltrades.com and search the dropdown trades box for Electric Vehicle Charging.

Your Garden

A

January Gardening Tips fter the indulgences of the festive season, a bit of winter digging will blow the cobwebs away and get you back into shape!

Well-rotted manure or organic material can be added to the soil surface, and it will become incorporated naturally. Also, a good idea when you are digging is to apply lime to the surface at 100g per square metre (3oz per square yard) especially where you grew brassicas the year before. Getting the soil prepared now will save time feeding later in the year and will often enhance crop growth and yield. Rhubarb can be forced, using pots or an upturned bucket, or even a pile of straw, making sure any holes are covered to completely cut out the light. What could be tastier than pale pink sticks of rhubarb, harvested in late February? You could start a bean trench by digging down about 60cm, line it with newspaper or shredded cardboard, then start filling it with your organic kitchen waste. Each time you add a batch of waste cover with a layer of soil: continue until the trench is full and leave it to rot down. This will provide nutrients and help retain moisture. Towards the end of the month, seed potatoes should be available, and you can start chitting them ready for planting: put them rose side uppermost and use old egg boxes or seed trays.

Weather permitting, there are a few jobs that can be tackled at the allotment or vegetable plot: • Clean up your plot by disposing of all the damaged and rotten crops: most of the overwintering vegetables will suffer if the conditions are wet. Also remove any leaves as these are a perfect hide-out for slugs and snails. Your shed or greenhouse, tools, trays, and pots could be cleaned too, ready for the new year. • Prune apple and pear trees, but not stone fruits such as cherry and damson; they should be summer pruned. • Plant bare-rooted trees and bushes. • Protect plants from cold and check stakes and ties. • Draw the soil up around the stalks of cabbages and winter cauliflowers to just under the first set of leaves. Check over Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli and support them with a strong stake to prevent them from being blown over in high winds. • In non-freezing weather, shallots can be planted. Shallots take longer to grow than onions, but if planted now, should be ready earlier in the summer. • Any stored fruit and vegetables need checking for rotten or damaged produce and evidence of mice. Here’s to a year of successful gardening!

Burns Night Supper

at Peterborough Cathedral on Saturday January 22nd

A

re you connected to Scotland? Are you a fan of the poet Rabbie Burns? Are you free on January 22nd? Do you love eating and dancing? Then this is a Cathedral event for you!

Peterborough Cathedral is preparing to host another of its traditional Burns Night Suppers. The Scottish flag already hangs inside the Cathedral, both as a symbol of one of its patron saints, St Andrew, and also to mark the place where Mary, Queen of Scots was buried in 1587, before her removal to Westminster Abbey in 1612. The event, (in the transepts and under the central tower of the Cathedral) includes a three-course meal (with haggis, neeps and tatties, naturally) complete with the traditional recitations, bagpipes and whisky toasts. This will be followed by a fabulous ceilidh with a caller and live music from the famous Cambridgeshire ceilidh band, Frog on a Bike. There

will also be a bar selling alternatives to Scotch! With guests invited to wear a kilt, or something tartan as part of their outfit, this promises to be an evening to remember. Tickets are £50 per person including the meal and whisky for the toasts. You can order a vegetarian option as you book. Please wear flat shoes for dancing. Covid guidelines will apply. Maria Elsey, Head of Operations at Peterborough Cathedral, and herself a loyal Scot, said, “I can’t think of a better place to hold a Burns’ Night Supper! The Cathedral is such a beautiful and historic setting, and the evening will have all the traditional elements that we Scots expect on this special night. I hope that many people will come and enjoy the event, regardless of whether or not they have Scottish connections.” With hearty thanks to sponsors Ingleton Wood and Eddisons.
