Welcome to your February issue... February of course sees us celebrating Valentine’s Day.
W
e can shower our loved one with tokens of our affection. I once read that “Love” means nothing in tennis, but it’s everything in life.
Songwriters have already been here many times before, and yes, it is indeed a “many splendored thing” and many would agree that “Love is all you need”. Some of you might even remember glam-rockers, Sweet, suggesting “Love is like oxygen” in 1978. This month, I just want to share with you this memorable line from Nat King Cole’s “Nature Boy” and hope that you all have a fabulous, fun-filled February. “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.”
Claire x
Just a few weeks into a new year and we’ve already seen a strong contender for 2022’s “Dumb Advice of the Year” awards. With energy bills threatened to go through the roof as dramatically as heat through a badly insulated loft, energy provider, Ovo, have advised us to keep warm by cuddling your pets, eating porridge, and throwing in a few starjumps for good measure. Oh, how our border collies squirmed as I leapt up and splattered them both in porridge! Perhaps I should have taken each suggestion separately! On the subject of bills, my friend said he couldn’t afford to pay his water bill, so I sent him a Get Well Soon card. He’s had an awful cold twice this year; I think it’s a case of deja-flu! Anyway, romance is very much in the air in this month’s issue, so may you all feel the love and make the most of the lighter evenings and warmer days to come. Enjoy the read!

Face up to February!
T
Well, we are now well into a new year and maybe into a “new you” …. dare I say, an even better and improved version? his month, we have decided to focus on one of our most successful and fastest selling treatments, and one which I personally love.
In the quest for trying to stay youthful and radiant, more and more people are turning to injectable treatments to reverse the signs of ageing - and two popular go-tos are Profhilo and dermal fillers. But even though there are similarities between them, the two are actually very different anti-ageing treatments. Profhilo is the 'acceptable injectable', which targets dullness and all the things we must anticipate as we age, like fine lines and wrinkles, skin laxity and loss of fullness. Like most fillers, hyaluronic acid is also the main player here, being injected into ten different points of the face (five on each side) with relatively no pain or downtime involved. Hyaluronic acid has unrivalled moisturising properties when hydrating your skin; with just one gram holding up to six litres of water, it’s hard to think of a better way to give your skin a hydration hit. Over time, the treatment also boosts collagen and elastin - two key components of bouncy, plump, youthful skin. Therefore, Profhilo results in
skin that’s rejuvenated, restored, boosted, and hydrated…just what we need as we age. Even though both fillers and Profhilo involve hyaluronic acid being injected into the face to undo signs of ageing, this is where the similarities stop. Whilst dermal fillers are used for altering the shape of facial features, replacing lost volume due to ageing and contouring, Profhilo doesn’t have any role in volumizing or restructuring the face.

So, what is Profhilo used for? Profhilo is like taking a really good hydrating moisturiser and, instead of slathering it on top of your skin, it is injected into your skin, helping to make it supple and hydrated from the inside. It provides your skin with intense moisturisation and rejuvenation in one hit. Profhilo is a course of two treatments, carried out a month apart, which can last up to a year for some people. We do, however, find that the majority of our clients request to have it every other month, and see it as a really amazing facial. Please come and see us for a free consultation or book in now and let’s get you glowing!

School News
Deeping St James Community Primary School Our vision statement is:
Inspire to learn - Achieve together We believe that underpinning our aim for the highest academic standards for all, it is essential that we give our children the skills and capabilities to learn in an ever-changing and challenging world. It is not sufficient just to be able to learn facts and knowledge to pass tests; we feel that it is essential to teach the children learning behaviours that will benefit them throughout their life, and that will ensure that they have a positive and enthusiastic attitude to the challenges that lie ahead of them.
At Deeping St James Community Primary School, we focus on four key learning behaviours and attitudes that the children can aspire to have:
A Persistent Problem-Solver:
A Resilient Risk-Taker:
This includes qualities like taking risks in their learning; to not be afraid to come out of their “comfort zone”; to not let obstacles stand in the way of their learning; and, if a situation changes, to change with it.
This includes qualities like asking “How?” and “What if?” questions; gathering, processing, and evaluating information to solve a problem; challenging ideas and thoughts in a constructive way; and thinking imaginatively to solve a problem.
A Determined Self-Improver:
This includes qualities like being able to evaluate their work honestly and then make self-changes to improve their work; to ask questions to find out answers; to have a passion to improve; and to look after their body and mind for learning.
A Co-operative Group-Worker: This includes qualities like being able to accept and appreciate other people’s views; changing behaviour to suit different roles and situations; having empathy with others; and being able to accept and give help to others. We aim to develop these learning behaviours through enthusiastic, interesting teaching, and through a style of lesson delivery that will pose questions of the children which will ensure that they become active and engaged thinkers and learners individually, and as groups. The qualities of the four key learning behaviours are underpinned in our reward system and valued throughout the school. Staff reward children for demonstrating these learning behaviours. Pupils collect points to achieve bronze, silver and gold learning behaviour awards. These are celebrated during our Friday ‘Celebration Assemblies’.

Deepings Swimming Club moves to Stamford eepings Swimming Club has secured its long-term future after agreeing a move to a new home. As of January 10th, the club started training full time at Stamford Endowed Schools’ Memorial and Junior pools, putting an end to months of uncertainty about its survival. The two superb facilities will enable the club to return to full training hours across all squads, giving it a firm foundation from which to attract new members.
Deepings Swimming Club was forced to leave Deepings Leisure Centre, its home of forty-six years, after South Kesteven District Council closed the facility last summer due to safety concerns about a leaking roof. While the council has pledged to repair and reopen the leisure centre within the next twoto-three years, the timescale left the club with no option but to search for alternative arrangements. Now, thanks to the support of Stamford Endowed Schools, all squads can return to their pre-Covid training hours, helped by an additional Friday evening slot at Stanground Sports Centre. Club Chairman, Andy Cardell, said, “I would like to extend my thanks to the club’s committee, and all the parents and swimmers for their support, patience and loyalty. We now look forward to the

The next trial will be held in February. To book a place, please e-mail the club at deepings@swimclubmanager.co.uk.

Will & Probate Services
The Emotional Benefits of
Writing a Will
ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING Director Will and Probate Services
I have been writing these articles in various form for almost fifteen years and, in that time, I must have written dozens of articles about the benefits of writing a will.
I
It was not until I had a conversation with a friend just before Christmas, however, that they pointed out that all of my articles consider the practical benefits of having a will, but none have addressed the emotional benefits which she thought it was worth me touching upon.
She said that the overwhelming feeling when she signed her will was relief - relief that something that had been on her mind for a very long time was finally out of the way and relief that the whole process had been much easier than she had imagined. Other clients have said they had a feeling of security, knowing that all of the loose ends would be tied up neatly when they passed away, and that their family would have certainty about their wishes. Yet more have said that they felt protected, as if making the wills had thrown a big blanket over them and their family to protect them from outside influences. I have lost count of the people who have cried when I have spoken to them; I am pretty sure it is not because I am a horrible person! But having the courage to have the difficult conversation brings out a lot of feelings, so we always have a box of tissues at the ready.
So, whether it is courage, relief, security, certainty, or protection that you are looking for, you can get them by making your will. My friend summed it up perfectly and in just three words: making her will gave her … PEACE OF MIND. If you want to find yours, give us a call on 01778 252301 and one of our qualified professional consultants will be on their way to deliver peace of mind to you and your family.

Sue Ryder Hospice seeks service users to help improve care
A Peterborough hospice is asking friends, family and service users of its palliative care and bereavement support to get in touch to help improve the care it gives.
S
ue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice supports families from Peterborough, Stamford, Rutland, and parts of Cambridgeshire from its specialist inpatient unit in the city, alongside virtual day services, ‘hospice at home’ care in Peterborough and a family support service.
“Having service users helping with this kind of decision-making is really interesting. I’m five years down the line from losing Ken so for me it was nice to be able to contribute in this way. I would love to do more - I felt like I was really making a difference to the hospice.”
To help improve its services, the hospice is launching a new Service User Participation Group, and hospice staff are keen to hear feedback from families who have been supported by the hospice. Susan Shackleton, Head of Clinical Services, said, “The people we support are at the heart of what we do, and we are committed to ensuring that everyone who accesses Sue Ryder services is listened and responded to so that they receive high quality, personalised care. Our service users have a unique contribution to make, and we want their voices, experience and support to shape and direct our activity.” The hospice hopes the new group will help shape the support it gives, inform recruitment of staff and result in service users working alongside hospice staff to develop new services too. Jacky Stewart’s husband, Ken, was diagnosed with throat cancer in April 2015 and received support from a Sue Ryder hospice in 2016. Since then, Jacky has been a staunch supporter of Sue Ryder fundraising events and she has also assisted with the appointment of a new doctor for her local Sue Ryder hospice by sitting on the interview panel. Jacky said, “I just owe Sue Ryder a debt that I will never be able to repay. When they called and said they were interviewing for a doctor’s position and would I like to come and help, of course I said yes. I’ve retired from the Police Force after thirty-three years. In that time, I have interviewed police officers, specials, and control room staff, so I have a lot of experience. 16

Susan Shackleton commented, “I would love to hear from anyone who has experienced care from Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice and who is interested in finding out more about joining the group. We’ll be meeting virtually from February every six weeks, and you will receive a very warm welcome.” For more information, e-mail thorpehall.reception@ sueryder.org or call 01733 225900.

A better way of working, a better legal service. Surveys consistently show that buying or selling a house is one of the most stressful experiences of your life.
B

Liberty Partnership are delighted to launch
‘The Liberty Lunch’ to celebrate our community champions and those people that go the extra mile
BY RICHARD ASH CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AND DIRECTOR You may know one of those ‘champions’ who always helps where they can or goes that extra mile for a neighbour, a stranger or a friend, and if you do then we would like to hear from you. Our plan is to offer a modest reward of lunch out at a local pub, diner, coffee shop or eatery up to the value of £100. We would ask that this offer is taken up locally to support our fantastic local businesses. We will select a monthly ‘champion’ from any nominations we receive. When contacting us, we would ask that you say who they are, how you feel they have positively contributed towards our community, and provide their contact information, having asked their permission to do so. Please see this as being a good thing, something to celebrate, a way in which we at Liberty Partnership can celebrate our community. Sadly, we will not be able to recognise everyone, which we hope you all understand.

Mindfulness
Finding Peace in a Fast-Paced World [ by Lucy Briggs ]
Instead of walking to our destination, we can simply get in a car. Instead of searching through books, we can instantly Google our answer. Instead of writing to a distant friend, we can tap on our phones and see their face on a video call.
D
espite boundless developments in technology, our brains have remained the same. Is our grey matter capable of dealing with how fast our world has become?
First, and foremost, we are animals; we crave safety and security. Constant streams of news can feel like an attack on our bodies. How can we shield ourselves?
Slow It Down! ‘Mindfulness’ is the process of appreciating the little things, noticing our senses, and clearing our mind. Certainly, much easier said than done, and I understand it can sound a little wacky, but here are some simple things you could try this month…
1
Mindful eating - Take a small piece of food, perhaps some chocolate or a grape. Eat it slowly, paying attention to how it feels. What is the texture like? Is it sweet or savoury? Is it hot or cold? Does it have an aroma? Does it make a crunching sound?
2 24 60
Breathe - Breathe in deeply through your nose while counting to three. Hold that breath for three. Then exhale through your
D I S C O V E R I N G
Bourne Deepings
mouth for three. Wait for three, then repeat. Try different variations of this – different counts and different speeds. It can help to make a noise on exhaling too. Try a humming sound, or a whooshing of air, no matter how silly it feels!
3
Notice an animal - For those of us blessed to have pets, stroking an animal can be incredibly soothing. We can notice their breathing patterns, the way their tail moves, or patterns in their fur. For those of us without, there are plenty of birds around as spring approaches. Watch the way they hop, peck at the ground, or soar above us.
4
Get outside - I walk in nature every day and relish the opportunity to ignore my phone for a while. Walk without headphones. What can you hear? Touch things! What does the tree’s bark feel like? Stop and literally smell the flowers! I like to walk with ‘a photographer’s eye’, looking for beautiful shots, even if I don’t have my camera on me. Seeing the sun beaming through the trees on a frosty winter’s morning is enough to make anyone forget the cares of this fast world, if even for just a moment. Take care of yourself!

Consumer Advice
Don’t be Tempted to “Fall in Love at First Swipe” this Valentine’s Season By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades February is the season of love and romance – but it is also a key date for fraudsters aiming to steal your money as well as your heart! According to statistics from Action Fraud, reports of romance fraud have increased by 40% in the year to April 2021. Dating online without meeting in person has become the new normal throughout the coronavirus pandemic. However, fraudsters have duped those looking for love out of an estimated £73.9m during this period. Some seven million UK residents are believed to be registered on dating sites, with Tinder leading the way with online dating apps. However, for many it can spiral into heartbreak and financial misery when looking for “love at first swipe”. Fraudsters trick victims into sending money or gather enough personal information to steal their identities, resulting in financial and emotional misery. Here are a few simple steps to keep yourself, and your loved ones, safe: D Don't rush into an online relationship. Get to know the person, not the profile, ensuring you ask plenty of questions. A Analyse their profile. Protect yourself by confirming their identity. Check the person is genuine by putting the following into your search engine: their name, profile picture (by simply using a reverse image search) and any repeatedly used phrases, along with the term 'dating scam'. T Talk to your friends and family. Be wary of anyone who tells you not to tell others about them. E Evade scams. Never send money or share your bank details with someone you've only met online. S Stay on the dating site messenger service. Fraudsters will often encourage their victims to use different communications channels that are often undetectable. Be confident that you know who you are speaking to and be wary if they fail to meet you in person. If you think you are a victim of romance fraud, contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. For more information on this and other types of fraud, visit www.actionfraud.police.uk FE BR U A R Y 2 0 2 2

February Gardening Tips ebruary is not usually one of the best months for weather – snow, frosts, and rain but with the occasional sunny day.
There are several seeds you can sow under cover, in a greenhouse or on a warm windowsill but, before you do, make sure that pots and seed trays are washed out and sterilised to prevent the spread of disease. Also prepare cloches by cleaning the sides with warm soapy water and rinse off. For early crops, prepare and rake level the soil, before putting the cloche in place a few weeks before sowing which will help the soil warm up.

Other jobs for February include: • Make sure winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons, whose food supply is a little short at this time of year. • Remove dead leaves from cabbages and sprouts –if they start to rot, they can spread mould and mildew. MEET THE TEAM PAUL
If it’s experience and a positive attitude you need, has been involved in nearly ten thousand sales since starting his career in 1986. He still gets a buzz from every sale agreed by Briggs Residential, whether it’s an £80,000 starter home or a £1 million mansion – every sale is as important as each other. Married to Paula for over twenty years with two grown-up children, Laura and Harry, Paul has lived locally to the Deepings for over forty years.
PAULA is a Director alongside
Paul and has been since the business first opened in 2001. She is an integral member of the team, heading the complete administration side of the company, besides visiting clients, and offering superb customer service.
FIONA breezed into our office over six years ago and is now Sales
Manager of the team. Having grown up locally, she brings lots of local knowledge and never forgets a face. She enjoys spending time with her partner, her daughter and her extremely cute cockapoo. She is about to go on maternity leave but will be in the office from time to time.
ZOE first joined our team in 2004
and proved herself to be a most competent property consultant. In 2018, Zoe took a break to spend time with her lovely family and re-joined us last year, bringing with her excellent local knowledge, professionalism, and commitment to helping people move. In her spare time, Zoe rides horses and enjoys a roast dinner alongside a full and fruity Sauvignon Blanc!

LUCY
joined us in 2019 after previously working in the property industry for four years. Lucy brings a wealth of knowledge and is dedicated to ensuring customer service is the top priority along with a humorous flair. Outside of work, Lucy likes to relax, watching a good series on Netflix with her partner, three ‘fur babies’, and their mischievous dachshund.
BECKY
joined the team in 2016 and brings light heartedness and a wicked sense of humour into our working day. She is a Deepings girl and can draw on her own experiences of living locally when offering candid advice to others. Away from the office, Becky enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter, and walking their two dogs, (calling into as many beer gardens as possible!)
EMMA joined us in 2016 to support the team on Saturdays.
During the week she is a Business Analyst and has held numerous positions within customer services, but loves the fact that her Saturday role puts her back in touch with helping people. Emma lives with her husband and two daughters and will often be seen out and about with their dogs.
BETTY, our fun-loving,
affectionate office mascot was born in 2011. Recent success at a local dog show saw our super cute ‘Westie’ come first in her class!”

Nature
A Winter Wonderland, But Spring Will Soon Be Here!
I
[ by David Denman ]
Opening the curtains on another frosty morning to see two Whooper swans flying across a blue slate coloured sky – another wonderful winter thrill!
t has been a winter notable so far for its mild weather, rain, and fog. On one foggy morning across a field near the Welland, two masked heads emerged from the whiteness, belonging to a pair of Egyptian geese. They are more closely related to ducks than geese and their plumage is a combination of subtle browns and ochres which can vary between individuals. Their dark eye patches give them the appearance of wearing “burglar type” masks. And they are creatures of habit, frequenting the same field system on a regular basis. So regular and constant were this pair during the past weeks that I broke one of the rules of being a professional ecologist, and named them, somewhat obviously, as Mo and Salah! There have been some brightly illuminated days during the winter and, during one of these, we were lucky to have a close encounter with a kingfisher on the Maxey Cut. Illuminated like an opera diva in a spotlight, the sunlit electric blue wing feathers were easily visible, even though the bird was deep in a bush above the water. And when it eventually took to the wing, the blue and orange flashes seemed magnified and out of keeping with the winter hues.
February is a significant month for badgers, as the middle part of February is the time of the year when cubs are being born in main badger setts. A badger clan usually has a range of setts, of differing sizes within their territory. The largest sett, termed the main sett, has the deepest tunnels and largest chambers which are lined with bedding and are ideal for cub rearing. Badgers change their bedding material regularly and move backwards through their tunnels with old bedding material held in place under their chins! Mounds of old discarded bedding material are placed above the ground, some distance from badger holes. Make the most of the redwings and fieldfares and all our other winter visitors, as the spring can move in very quickly, with familiar spring signs appearing almost daily. As well as snowdrops, the catkins of the goat willow indicate that the seasons are changing. The catkins appear in January and turn yellow by March, resembling a cat’s paw, hence the common name of “pussy willow”. Great spotted woodpeckers are already “drumming” in woodland in the Deepings, proclaiming their territorial claims in readiness for the breeding season. Those lucky enough to have ponds will be checking whether frogs or toads have returned, confirming the changing of the seasons. Finally, a reminder to look out for hares “boxing” in the open fields which normally occurs when a buck is being too persistent with a doe.

Local History
The Demolition of Middle Row...
S
and a Murder!
(KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE)
ome people may remember when there was an island car park in the centre of the Market Place in Market Deeping. In previous centuries, however, a line of buildings stood in almost the same position. In 1563, they were recorded as “certain shops standing all in a row near the market cross” but may have existed many years earlier. Unfortunately, these properties, known as Middle Row, were demolished in 1846 before the era of photography and, although an old print of them existed, it can no longer be traced. We have few clues about the buildings’ appearance, but they are likely to have been updated over the years. In 1810, when grocer and draper, Thomas Pulley retired, his shop in the Row was described as a modern, well-built slated house, having a shop in front and good sitting, and sleeping rooms. Next-door was a clothier’s and, further along, William Sharpe was a stay-maker (creating women’s corsets stiffened with whalebone). In the 1830s, one shop was a butcher’s, whilst a shoemaker also traded there. After the new town bridge was built in 1841, the road from Peterborough passed close to the top of Middle Row, as shown on the map, and it created a
dangerous corner for horse-drawn traffic turning right towards Spalding. A few years later, a group of local businessmen formed a committee to improve Market Deeping. They described the Row as “an unsightly pile of buildings and a great disfigurement to the town”, so funds were raised to buy the properties and have them pulled down. In 1847, the former owners of Middle Row were paid compensation of varying amounts, depending on the value of their building. Thomas Pulley had died, and his unmarried daughter Elizabeth, who had inherited his premises, received £145. Miss Pulley lived by herself in St Martin’s, Stamford, and she was found dead there in March 1860, aged sixtythree, following a burglary where money, jewellery and silverware were stolen. A gold mourning ring engraved with the name, Thomas Pulley, was seen in the workshop of one of her near neighbours, a carpenter who had previously been jailed for theft. He showed signs of panic as suspicions grew and was arrested for her murder. A few weeks later, a man fishing near Hudd’s Mill in Stamford pulled a package wrapped in cloth out of the river. It contained silver cutlery monogrammed EP, which had been dumped by her killer. In total, fortyfour items were retrieved, all hallmarked 1847 – the year Miss Pulley received compensation money for her Middle Row premises.

When do you maintain your Electrical System?
O
BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
ne of the most important things that people overlook when thinking about having an electrical condition report is the routine maintenance it does for the system.
We all know how heat expands and cold contracts metal, but a lot of people don’t think about the effect this has on your electrical system over the years, especially if nothing has been done to it for a good while. Often, when I go to a system that has not been tested for ten years or more, connections can often be turned several times before they have fully tightened again, which to me, is a real concern. With loose connections being the number one cause of electrical house fire, this maintenance is crucial to keep your system maintained and your electrical circuits safe. I am often trying to explain to people that an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) is more than just a tick box exercise for the insurance company; it is something that can give you real peace of mind. I guess it’s a bit like when you have been avoiding going to the doctor because you think something may be wrong, and when you get checked out and
Domestic
realise you are ok, the relief you get is similar. After completing an EICR, even in times when we have found problems in a system, the feedback has often been that it is much better than the client had imagined, and it allowed these clients to trust that their home is safe again. So, my message this month is do not live in fear; get your home tested, as it most likely isn’t as bad as you think it will be!
