Welcome to your March issue...
T
his is the month, of course, when we mothers are allotted by our partners and families a full day of doing nothing, a whole day in which we are spoilt rotten with flowers, chocolates, and perfume (especially if someone had actually ‘underdone’ the Valentine’s Day gift-fest last month!) Tell me if you think I’m dropping too big a hint here!
Seriously, we do not expect the earth on Mother’s Day. It’s just lovely to get some recognition, whatever form that may take, for all our multi-tasking abilities and for our level-headedness and calm when the waters of the family home may sometimes get a little choppy! It was the American novelist, Peter De Vries, who suggested that “a mother’s role is to deliver children obstetrically once, and by car forever after.” How true! Enjoy your day, girls, and enjoy this month’s issue.
Claire x
Well, “Dry January” came and went, and “Damp February” followed. Celebrations might now be more likely, because not only does this month include Mother’s Day on March 27th, but six days earlier, we can all celebrate World Poetry Day as well. So, to combine the two, here is perhaps the shortest poem ever written, but whilst it lacks volume, there’s no doubting its heartfelt message, that of thanking our wonderful mothers for everything they do for us... “Ta, Ma!” On a personal note, there’s one “new” mum this time round, as our daughter-in-law, Jade, gave birth to Darcy on February 7th (with a little help from our son, Rob!) So, while we’re on the subject, I used to think the word ‘Caesarean’ began with the letter ‘S’ but when I looked in the dictionary, it was in the ‘C’ section. Don’t forget: Clocks forward on March 27th! Enjoy the read.

Ageing Gracefully with Botox Botox, (full name Botulinum toxin) is the most effective and well-known procedure known to reduce your aesthetic age.
W
hen I reached forty-five, I suddenly noticed lines appearing that I had never noticed before … on my forehead, at the side of my eyes and in the area between my nose and my eyes, as a result of my frowning.
Botox injections are noted primarily for the ability to relax the muscles in your face to smooth out lines and wrinkles, giving an all-over smoother complexion. They are also known for treating conditions such as excessive sweating and to prevent chronic migraines. The injections are relatively safe so long as they are carried out by an experienced medical professional and, with Alistair being a registered pharmacist for over twenty-six years, you know you are in safe hands. It is important that the injections are placed precisely, in order to avoid sideeffects such as a droopy eye or worse. We have heard many horror stories of it being administered incorrectly or of “Black Market Botox” being used, because it is a cheaper option, such as “Botulax”, with ladies being scarred for life and being left with painful lumps across their faces. Here, at Deepin Aesthetics, we only use Boccouture which is a fully licensed product which can only be supplied to fully trained and licensed practitioners. Boccouture usually begins working one to three days after treatment and, depending on the area, the effect can last up to three months or longer. To maintain the effect, regular followup injections will be needed about every three months. Why don’t you come and see us for a free consultation and let’s get you ageing gracefully?

School News
Deeping St Nicholas Primary School We have the pleasure in sharing the good news from our latest OFSTED inspection, which took place last November 2021. The headline of the report states:
‘Deeping St Nicholas Primary School continues to be a good school.’ Here are just some of the comments Ofsted said about our wonderful school: ‘Pupils and staff at this small school are like one big family,’ ‘Pupils say they feel happy and safe at school,’ ‘The curriculum is broad and ambitious.’ This would not have been possible, however, without all the hard work from our dedicated team and our amazing children. We would all like to say a big thank you to the Deeping St Nicholas Wind Turbine Trust
for their continued support of our school. With their financial support, we have just installed a new trim trail on the school field for our children to enjoy. Isn’t it fabulous? We’ve been busy on our bikes this term. Children in Key Stage 1 had the opportunity to build their confidence to cycle and control a balance bike effectively. During their sessions, they learned how to put on their helmet, use their brakes, learned the names of bike parts, and improved their balance, agility, and coordination. Then, some of our children in Key Stages 1 and 2 spent a day mastering the skill of balance, control and pedalling. We had so much fun raising money for the RNLI with William Stukeley Primary School. Our sponsored Welly Walk was a huge success and the children loved it. Miss L Williams Assistant Head
Market Deeping Community Primary School
County Champions and Lego Success!
“In January, the children at our school achieved some great feats in competitions with other schools. The Under-11 football team won the County Championships, playing in Skegness. They qualified for the tournament by beating local teams and they have also won their local league this season. The team are looking forward to competing in the Regional Championships later this year. The achievement was a real testament to their teamwork and commitment as they got all the way to the final without conceding a goal! The school’s First Lego League teams competed against eight other teams across the area in the competition led by staff at Park Air Systems. They were awarded trophies for robot tactics and innovation in their solution to help the Site Manager move items around the school. The competition was against five other secondary schools and the children were proud of their robots achieving second and fourth place in the competition. It has been great for the pupils to get competitive sports and events back up and running after so long and wonderful to see how well the children at MDCP have done.”
FUND RAISING EFFORTS AT DEEPING ST. JAMES CP SCHOOL “Children, parents, and staff have begun fund raising efforts to help purchase a defibrillator for the school. After events at last summer’s football European Championships and hearing that ambulance crews attempt more than 30,000 resuscitations annually, we felt that having a device on site would be something we would all feel better about. Our amazing PTA have put their weight behind the scheme and the children have been invited to come in dressed in red or wearing a heart as part of their outfit at the end of this term! This way we are hoping to raise £800 to help support school funding of the project and install a device which we never hope we’ll need to use!”

Baston C of E Primary School Our Year 6 class visited Stibbington to experience life as an evacuee. We had a fun-filled day exploring the village, sampling a typical lesson in their classroom, discovering who our guardians would be and enjoying playground games from that period in the 1940s. Our Year 5/6 Cross Country squad celebrated success in winning individual medals,
NORTHBOROUGH SCHOOL The Planet Protectors have been busy again making sure that our school is as eco-friendly and waste efficient as can be. We had a meeting with PECT, who we have an Eco Charter with. The Planet Protectors will lead the school in making sure we are as waste efficient as possible in the coming half term. We have started a Friday Tuck Shop to raise money for books for class. As we were celebrating Chinese New Year, Year 3 cooked some delicious noodles to sell. Their parents also made some tasty treats for us all to share. We raised £133.25. Wow!
overall boys’ team first medals, and the first-place trophy for overall school performance at the Elite Sports Academy event in Spalding. Year 5 went to Buckminster Estate to explore Gunby Warren. We were learning about
the impact of climate change on the forest. We measured trees to calculate how much carbon would be inside, then we sorted items which were made from trees or other materials. Our Eco Group have continued with their quest to keep our school grounds and village clean.
Langtoft Primary School The children in Year 1 have recently been visited by Peterborough Museum to discover more about toys through the years, whilst in Year 2, they have made dragon eyes and explored ‘sgraffito’ art as part of their focus on China. Year 4 children have had an exciting time, building objects of their choice in Science, and are busy constructing electrical circuits to bring them to life. The Year 5 class has recently returned from an exciting exploration of the Space Centre in Leicester as part of their learning about their solar system. Currently, we are busy training pupils
in Year 6 to help support our younger year groups with finding solutions and overcoming challenges at break and lunch time. These ‘Peer Mediators’ develop their independence and empathy to help others. We also have our ‘Mini Police’, monitoring and supporting with the smooth running of school. Our ‘Rights Respecting Team’ in school will be helping the local community by building a selection of bird boxes for our local Penfield Nature Reserve. This is great news because we will also receive regular updates on any nesting activity to help engage the children further in a love for learning and nature.

Will & Probate Services
It’s Not What Changes,
It is How You Manage it.
ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING Director Will and Probate Services
We have had a challenging start to the year here at Will & Probate Services because two of my most experienced and trusted staff members have chosen to leave, one to pursue a lifelong ambition, and the other was poached by a larger law firm.
T
he loss of two such valued members of staff hurt on a personal level, but the manner of their leaving could not have been more different.
One planned her leaving and was open and honest. From the day that the new opportunity arose, she kept me informed every step of the way. We were able to plan her departure, what she had to hand over and how her duties would be covered. On the day she resigned, we knew what to do to cover her departure. The other was perhaps a more typical resignation; a letter on my desk informing me that she was leaving, an awkward conversation as to why and when, followed by a frantic couple of weeks trying to get everything ready to hand over.
talked about, the family were able to manage their loved one’s affairs in the months before the death. The records are in place so that the estate can be handled quickly and efficiently. The handover from one generation to the next is smooth. It doesn’t lessen the pain of loss, but it does help in many other ways. Then there is the more typical family, where death takes them by surprise. There is a scramble to find a will and who, if anyone, holds it. Nobody knows what is owned or owed, who is supposed to be doing what. Funeral wishes are never spoken about. Inevitably, the pain of the loss is added to by the stress of the admin, and everything takes longer than it otherwise would have done. So, the lesson to take is a simple one, don’t duck the difficult conversations; be open and honest with each other. Make a succession plan because your family will thank you in the end.
It got me thinking that the two resignations completely mirror what we deal with on a day-to-day basis when a family experiences a bereavement.
As for us, the world keeps turning, our new staff are settling in and enjoying their own new challenges. Our succession planning is better, and we are still here to help.
Some families (sadly a minority) have had all the BIG conversations and put the right planning in place. There is a well written will, the funeral has been

Baked With Love
O
Delicious Treats for Residents at Tallington Lodge Care Home
n February 15th, residents at Tallington Lodge Care Home in Tallington near Stamford enjoyed a Valentine’s party, complete with delicious cakes, music, and dancing. Chef Manager, Liam Connor, was tasked with baking three cakes for residents to sample and they voted for their favourite. The three cakes chosen for the ‘Baked with Love’ competition were a chocolate and orange cake, a Prosecco cake and a Biscoff cake. Chefs at the thirty-four care homes across the Country Court group could interpret the recipes as they wished and create their own decorations. The cakes all had the ‘Wow!’ factor, and everyone was keen to tuck in and give their opinion on the tastiest. “We chose three very different cakes,” explained Senior Catering Operations Support Manager, Ian Powell. “We wanted to give the residents the opportunity to try something a little bit different from the standard Victoria sponge. We got some terrific feedback, and the cakes were truly stunning.” Manju Panankavil, Home Manager at Tallington Lodge, commented, “Discussing our favourite cakes was a great conversation starter, and it was a great way to get to know people who have recently come to live with us. We had fun chatting about our childhood memories of baking and deciding which cakes we’d like to have at our party”.
June and John celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary recently. They met on the London Underground seventy years ago. June was just sixteen, working in the Home Office; John was in the Navy and on leave, visiting his aunt. Two months later, he turned up on June’s doorstep. Luckily June’s mum approved, and they married in 1957. June says that the secret to a long and happy marriage is always clearing the air and not letting things stew … and keeping John under the thumb, to which he did not pass any comment! John says June’s best qualities are that she puts up with him, whilst she thinks his best qualities are that he is caring and generous. Tallington residents, Bernard and Eileen have been married for over fifty years. They met at a dance hall in Cambridge and later moved into their home in Stamford. They consider the secret to a happy marriage is to celebrate every anniversary, and Bernard is grateful that Eileen looks after him so well. Mental Health How Can I Help? [ by Lucy Briggs ]
Did you know that one in four of us will suffer from a mental health issue at one point in our lives? Every single person will know someone who has experienced the struggle.
E 1
veryone’s experience is unique and different, yet there are a few easy things that every one of us can do to try and help those around us.
Listen: If someone is struggling, it can be almost instinctive to say things like, “Things will get better”, or “Cheer up, it could be worse”. Although we may think we’re being helpful, sentiments such as these can cause our friends and family to feel misunderstood. Think about how you might talk to someone who had a physical illness. We would never dream of telling them to ‘snap out of it’. We would most likely offer them support, kindness, and space to explore their feelings. Why should we treat mental health issues any differently?
2
Ask how you can help: A phrase as simple as “Is there anything I can do to help?” can go a long way. Somebody suffering from anxiety may appreciate company while doing the weekly shop. Somebody suffering from depression may appreciate going for a walk and a chat. Everybody is different, and what might work for you won’t necessarily work for others. Simply asking can often be the
60 18
D I S C O V E R I N G
Bourne Deepings
gateway to a very helpful conversation.
3
Don’t treat them any differently: If a loved one tells you that they have been diagnosed with a mental health issue, and perhaps they are taking new medication or seeing a therapist, it can be an incredibly scary time for them. Many people suffering from mental health conditions fear being misunderstood. I know that when I have struggled in my past, I have really appreciated the normal things, like laughing along to a favourite TV show with my family or having a chat about something completely unrelated to my illness. They are still the same person; they are just having a tough time.
4
Look after yourself: Be sure to not neglect how you are feeling and be kind to yourself. There are plenty of resources on the Mind website (www.mind.org.uk) that I would highly recommend for those supporting a friend, family member, or co-worker, and of course for those suffering themselves.
You never know what someone else is going through. A little kindness can go a very long way. Take care of yourselves!

Liberty Partnership are delighted to launch
‘The Liberty Lunch’ to celebrate our community champions and those people that go the extra mile
BY RICHARD ASH CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AND DIRECTOR You may know one of those ‘champions’ who always helps where they can or goes that extra mile for a neighbour, a stranger or a friend, and if you do then we would like to hear from you. Our plan is to offer a modest reward of lunch out at a local pub, diner, coffee shop or eatery up to the value of £100. We would ask that this offer is taken up locally to support our fantastic local businesses. We will select a monthly ‘champion’ from any nominations we receive. When contacting us, we would ask that you say who they are, how you feel they have positively contributed towards our community, and provide their contact information, having asked their permission to do so. Please see this as being a good thing, something to celebrate, a way in which we at Liberty Partnership can celebrate our community. Sadly, we will not be able to recognise everyone, which we hope you all understand.

Introducing...
I
George Sharpe
for your Domestic Plumbing Maintenance
moved to Bourne three years ago with my partner and two young children and am so happy that we chose this town for our family home. Its ‘community feel’ is what attracted us to the area and a huge part of my decision to finally take the leap from working for a large company, with over fifteen years of experience, to starting up my own plumbing business.
My aim is to deliver a friendly, professional service as a trustworthy plumber who the local community can call upon; this includes a 24/7 emergency call-out service to provide support when it is most needed.
I am NVQ qualified with experience in fitting, maintaining and repairing all types of plumbing work, such as pipes, valves, taps, toilets, water heaters and pumps. I take pride in the quality of my work and offer an honest and professional service every time. Dripping tap been annoying you for a while now? Radiator not getting hot? Toilet not flushing properly? Please get in touch to discuss all your plumbing needs. No job is too small! You can find me on @G.SharpePlumbing Maintenance, where you can read my customer reviews. I look forward to meeting you soon.”

Simple Steps to Save on Your Energy Bills By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades The worst of the winter weather may be over, but with ongoing headlines of utility bill hikes and more of us permanently working from home, how can we save money? Popping on the kettle for that extra cuppa, keeping the chill off during daytime hours and having the TV or radio on while we work all have an impact on our energy usage. According to the Energy Saving Trust, the cost of living is at its highest level in a decade, with household energy bills being the largest expense. The recent gas crisis has pushed energy bills up by well over £200 since last winter and they’re expected to rise again in April. While there are some government grants that can be applied for, here are a few simple but effective energy-saving tips: • Turning down your room thermostat by just one degree can save around £60 a year. • A fully draught-proof home could save around £25 a year. • Boilers account for around 55% of what is spent on energy bills in a year. • Turning off the lights will lead to a £15 a year saving but switching to LED bulbs will save £40 a year. • Laptops, TVs, and game consoles account for around 7% of your energy bill. • A single computer and monitor left on 24 hours a day will cost around £45 a year. Switching them off out of hours and enabling standby features could reduce this to less than £10 a year each and prolong the lifespan of equipment. • A dripping tap can waste more than 5,500 litres of water a year, so make sure your taps are properly turned off and change faulty washers promptly. • Fitting your hot water cylinder with an insulating jacket will save you £20 a year in heating costs and 110kg of carbon dioxide emissions. • Your room thermostat should be set between 18°C and 21°C. If you only have a single room thermostat for the whole house, for every degree you increase the temperature, it will increase the heating bill by about 10%. • Getting younger family members to play their part too can promote energy saving awareness that will lead to cheaper utility bills. Safe Local Trades has reliable tradesmen who can carry out property improvements that can save you money, as well as those who specialise in energy saving solutions for your home or business. Next Level Broadband from Upp: Supporting You and the Local Community!
Broadband provider Upp is now live in the Deepings, delivering the highest specification Fibre-To-The-Premises (FTTP) connection across the town. This will mark the end of the buffering battle for thousands of homes.
F
or years, residents of the Deepings have upgraded their packages with broadband providers in the hope of a superior service, only to be disappointed. Even with the premium “superfast fibre” packages, residents still struggle at peak times when there are too many demands on the router.
This is because previously, superfast fibre broadband was only provided to a cabinet on the street, and then shared with surrounding neighbours. This service, known as Fibre-To-The-Cabinet (FTTC), ultimately means that your broadband speed depends on how many other homes you share the cabinet with, and how far away it is from your home. Upp provides a superior FTTP connection which takes an optical fibre from their network and runs it straight into your home. This gives you a faster and more reliable connection that you don’t share with the rest of your neighbourhood. Upp’s service will also allow customers to watch up to 8K quality content on numerous streaming services, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, without buffering. This means multiple household members will finally be able to use the Wi-Fi with no trouble.
32
Deepings
Upp are delighted to be bringing their next-level broadband to the Deepings, with extensive build plans in full swing. Upp have also been working proactively with the local authorities to install their new broadband as efficiently as possible, utilising existing infrastructure to minimise disruption. Upp are committed to levelling up underserved areas in Lincolnshire and are proud to be based in the East of England, having planned to create over six hundred permanent jobs in the region by December 2023. Upp are currently working with local recruitment firms across the Deepings, whilst also supporting the ‘Women in Fibre Initiative’, encouraging more women to join the industry. On top of increasing recruitment locally, Upp are also engaged with the local community in the Deepings, proudly sponsoring Deeping Rangers FC’s first team kit, as well as supporting the Deepings Literary Festival with their upcoming short-story competition. Upp continue to receive excellent reviews on Trustpilot. To find out more about Upp’s unique broadband services, and to see if it’s available on your street, go to their website at: www.upp.com.

Nature
Bee-Flies, Gulls and Newts
T
[ by David Denman ]
All change! There are so many signs of spring in both towns and countryside.
he laugh, often termed a yaffle, of the green woodpecker and the drumming of the large great spotted woodpecker have both been heard in local woods and copses. A former baker from Crowland I knew used to say that this area went straight from winter to summer. I was reminded of this recently as a familiar, leaf-strewn hedge bottom had in only a few days turned green with emerging ground flora. The onwards push towards summer is well under way! One of those strangely named creatures that litter natural history is one I always look out for in early spring. A large, golden, hairy ball, hovering close to bare earth in gardens and fields, can only be a “bee-fly”. Is it a bee or a fly? Well, if you don’t let your shadow fall over the insect, you can get close enough to see just one pair of wings, thus making it a fly. Wasps and bees have two pairs of wings. It is a real harbinger of spring, and, with its super long proboscis, it is quite unmistakable. Another misnomer, especially at this time of year, is the black-headed gull.
I recently passed a farmer ploughing fields at Baston with a long line of raucous, expectant, black-headed gulls working the newly ploughed land. At this time of year, they do not have their black heads but just a dark spot behind their eyes. When they gain their breeding plumage, the spot changes – but not to a black head but a brown head! For a true black headed gull, there’s the much rarer Mediterranean gull, with its bright red bill and a glossy black head. This month, my fellow professional ecologists look to March 15th as the start of the great crested newt survey season. The great crested newt is our largest of three species of newt (measuring up to six inches) and people often ask why they are fully legally protected when they appear to be so common. The reason is that they are very vulnerable. For most of the year, they are on land but, for the breeding period, they all gather in their breeding pond. The loss of a breeding pond during the breeding season will obviously have drastic consequences for the local population. The great crested newt survey season lasts for thirteen weeks – a frantic period of pond surveys (complete with clipboards, torches, and wellies) trying to detect, then count, breeding great crested newts in ditches, ponds, and pits. However, this approach is rapidly being replaced by assessing pond water for great crested newt DNA.

Peterborough Choral Society Celebrates its Thirtieth Anniversary
T
his year sees Peterborough Choral Society celebrating its thirtieth anniversary. Since its founding, it has brought high quality, traditional choral music to Peterborough and its surroundings.
After a long break, during which they were able to stay in shape with Zoom rehearsals, the choir is now up and running and looking forward to making music through 2022 and beyond. They are led and inspired by Tansy Castledine (Musical Director and Director of Music, Peterborough Cathedral) In November 2021, the first concert after restrictions affecting choirs were lifted, was a rousing collection of choral classics in collaboration with the Festival Chorus and Cathedral Choir. This was followed by a carol concert in Castor church which raised the roof! Next on the programme is a performance of Handel’s “Messiah” on Saturday March 19th in Peterborough Cathedral with the Festival Chorus,
THREE MEDALS FOR DEEPINGS SWIMMING CLUB
Deepings Swimming Club came away with three bronze medals from “400s Day” at the Lincolnshire County Championships. Five team members qualified for the 400m Freestyle and 400m Individual Medley against the best swimmers from the county’s ten swimming clubs.
Harry Cardell and Jacob Briers show the medals for their amazing efforts.

Cathedral Choir and the Baroque instrumental ensemble, Eboracum. Tickets are now available at www.ticketsource.co.uk/peterborough-cathedral. The Choral Society is planning more concerts, workshops, and various musical events throughout 2022. See the website www.peterboroughchoral .org.uk for dates and details. DID YOU KNOW? Research has shown that singing together supports mental health and wellbeing and the Choral Society have fun too, so if you are interested in joining them, please get in touch. Why not drop in to one of their regular Tuesday rehearsals? You just need to love singing and it helps if you can read music too. There are spaces in all voice parts, especially Tenor and Bass.
Sadie Shines in Deepings Swimming Medal Feast! Sadie Hunter was one of four Deepings swimmers to reach the podium at the Meridian Leisure Centre in Louth recently, as Deepings SC added twelve medals to the three won the previous weekend at the Lincolnshire County Championships in Grantham. In addition to winning gold in the 200m butterfly (14yrs age group), Sadie won bronze in the 100 butterfly and the 200m backstroke. While Sadie was Deepings’ most successful girl, Jacob Briers topped the medals’ table for the boys with five, in addition to a bronze won the previous weekend. In the 200m breaststroke, he clinched gold in the 14yrs age group, and silver in the junior event. Jacob had further success in the 100m breaststroke,
Deepings
claiming silver, and he completed his medal tally in the 200m butterfly, with silver in the 14yrs age group and bronze in the junior category. Millie Herrick won a brace of bronze medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle (15yrs age group), whilst Mieke McDonald secured bronze in the 100m butterfly (12yrs age group). (KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE)
n a grass verge at the corner of Godsey Lane and Towngate East is a concrete base with two posts, remnants of Deeping’s farming heritage. They formed part of a sheep dip, where animals were immersed in a pool of water treated with insecticide. This killed parasites in their fleece and prevented skin infections, such as sheep scab. When not in use by farmers, fences around the dipping site provided a resting place for people out walking. The photograph taken in August 1912 shows a smartly dressed group, possibly out for a Sunday stroll. The young man is Edgar Greenfield who lived in Halfleet, where his grandfather had been a blacksmith, making iron plough shares and agricultural implements. His father had adapted the business to repair motor cars, which were then beginning to replace horses, while Edgar himself built one of the earliest radio receivers in the village. In 1912, amateur operators were transmitting in Morse code and Edgar heard news of the Titanic disaster through his equipment. Just visible in the field behind the sheep dip are sheaves of wheat, stacked by hand into stooks and left to dry in the sun. Once these were carted away for threshing, local people were allowed to collect any
spilt grain. Traditionally, women gleaned the fields in this way, collecting corn to feed their chickens or, in earlier times, to be ground into flour for the family’s bread. Some village women were employed as seasonal workers on farms, and the picture from West Deeping shows a group potato picking. Potatoes were gathered in wicker baskets which were then emptied into horse-drawn carts, seen in the background. It would have been tiring work, bending, and carrying heavy loads, yet a few of the women look elderly. Some are wearing traditional Lincolnshire bonnets, which were hand-made from white cloth and starched. Fabric extended over the shoulders to protect the wearer from sun and wind in the fields, while the front of the bonnet shaded their face. In the 19th century, more unusual crops were grown around Market Deeping to create medicinal extracts and essential oils at the local distillery. They included camomile, caraway, thyme, rosemary, white opium poppies and belladonna (deadly nightshade). There were a hundred acres of peppermint plants and fields of lavender which scented the neighbourhood. Children were given time off school to help with the planting and harvesting of mint by hand. After the oil had been extracted, peppermint water was given away to villagers, who drank it hot to soothe colds and stomach ailments.

Alto Electrical send Big Love and thanks to ‘Bourne in Business’
A
BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
n important part of being in business is having a network of people that know you. But what happens when times get tough; do these people still offer the same support? The guys at ‘Bourne in Business’ do!
We attend this local business group in Bourne and have done for many years now. It starts in a venue (currently the Shambles in The Old Town Hall) and usually ends in the pub. I can’t tell you how much support we’ve had from this group. Through all the highs and the lows, they have given unfaltering love and support whilst we, as a business, struggled through the past eighteen months. I strongly suggest that if you have a local business, you tap into this local network as they are an amazing bunch who always have your back!
For more information about ‘Bourne in Business’, please contact Claire on 07837 499061 It is down to the support and loyalty of these business friends (and, of course, our loyal clients) that we have managed to ‘pull through to the other side’ and we have just moved into a lovely big new office in Essendine! This year looks really good so far, and we have some exciting plans that you will hear more about later. We welcome ‘drop-ins if anyone would like to come and talk to us about any electrical issues. We also have some wonderful new facilities such as smart screens so we can welcome Scouts/Brownies/ WI/home educating groups etc for talks and activities. If you would like to discuss anything like this, please call Coleen to see what we can offer.
Deciding who makes the tea round is a competitive sport
Domestic
Also, thank you everyone for having faith in us as a business and keeping us going when times were tough. We are indebted to our local community, and we won’t forget it!

Mother's Day Mother’s Day is celebrated in a variety of ways in different countries and at different times of the year. Although the way it is celebrated may vary from country to country, the importance of a mother and the debt of gratitude to her that we all owe is recognized by us all, wherever we may be. “Mothering Sunday” is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In medieval times, when the children of poor families would often be sent to rich people’s homes to work as domestic help, these youngsters would collect flowers to give to their mother and bake special cakes which they called “Mothering cakes”. Nowadays, it is celebrated by presenting gifts, flowers and organising meals for the family. In Germany, Mother’s Day is called “Muttertag” and is celebrated on the second Sunday of May except during Pentecost when it falls on the first Sunday. During World War II, Mother’s Day took on a political significance. Mothers were praised for supplying children for the ‘Fatherland’ and awarded medals based on how many they produced. After the war, the relevance of Mother’s Day changed, and people now gave cards, gifts, and flowers. On the second Sunday of May, Australians gift various kinds of flowers to their mother, particularly carnations and chrysanthemums. Besides mothers, grandmothers and aunts also receive gifts. Many organisations throughout Australia also arrange events to raise money on this day. Again, in Japan, the second Sunday in May and again, mothers are showered with beautiful carnations throughout the country. Children traditionally show their love for their mothers by drawing pictures of their mother for them, with art competitions organised too. Mother’s Day in France is known as “Fete des Meres” and is celebrated in early June or at the end of May, in accordance with Pentecost. Mothers can relax in the knowledge that their children provide meals and gifts for them, besides reciting poems. Like many other countries, the day of celebration in Brazil is observed on the second Sunday in May and is a commercial holiday. Church gatherings and special performances by children take place, alongside large barbecues, where dads can perform their traditional cooking duties, while mums relax!
