Welcome to your April issue...

I

’m often surprised at just how quickly, within a few weeks, we move on each year from those cold, dark mornings and all that rain and those gale force winds – I’ve already forgotten the names of this year’s dreadful storms! Blossom is now on show and summer is nearly upon us.

As ever, I hope you find the wide range of topics included in this month’s magazine both informative and enjoyable. Many thanks to all the contributors and advertisers for their hard work and for your continuing support and words of encouragement. Enjoy the Easter celebrations, and best wishes for a happy break to you all.

Inside Highlights

6..................... Alto Electrical. 8.................... Local History: Deeping versus Crowland!

14.................. Community Matters: “Base Camp or Bust!”

“Spring is the best life coach: It gives you all the energy you want, all the positive thoughts you wish and all the boldness you need!” These are the words of the contemporary Turkish novelist, Mehmet Murat Ildan, and sum up how many of us are feeling, now spring is here. Sadly, the recent events in Ukraine serve to create so much sadness, and it is the same writer who gave us: “The power of every dictator has two main sources; his psychopathic mind and the support of the very easily deceivable, ignorant masses!” This ought to be a time of new life and joy, so let’s hope that a solution to the Ukraine conflict can be found very soon. Finally, on a lighter note: It’s difficult to say what our neighbour does. I’ve heard she sells seashells on the seashore.

I used to struggle counting in French: un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept… Aarrgghh! I think it was a huit allergy!

Enjoy the read!

John

“Let there be Light!”

Bourne Abbey Church Gets an Electrical Upgrade BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

M

arch has been a very busy month as we, at Alto Electrical, have been working hard on a very special project. If you have been in Bourne Abbey recently, you will be aware that they have been coping with temporary lighting for several years now. This month, we have been replacing the existing system with a new lighting design, which will future-proof the system and allow easy access, should any issue arise. We have liaised with Father Chris and the Parochial Church Council (PCC), finding out exactly what they needed in the church; put some ideas together with the help of a specialist church lighting designer; and presented a 3D video of the design to the PCC, answering any questions they had. This included the life span of the fittings, access to the church, the cable runs … all the expected points of concern.

This exciting project has taken three years to get off the ground. Owing to this eleventh century, Grade 1 listed church being so popular, the diocese was quite rightly concerned that the lighting was going to meet all the objectives it needed to. Alterations were made, in order to gain approval, and now we are thrilled to be working on this prestigious, local project. Regrettably, we have had to keep the church closed, except for thirty minutes per day. This is a safety measure, but by the time this magazine has been delivered we will hopefully have our ‘high access equipment’ out of the church. At this point, the church will then be able to open for an additional two hours (3pm-5pm) until the work has been completed, when normality will resume. The lighting will be finished in good time for the Easter services, so please go along and enjoy them.

Versus

Crowland by removing trees so that the river flooded. He also accused him of taking control of fisheries and ordering his armed men to attack Deeping tenants.

(KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE)

n 1390, the abbot of Crowland sent a petition to King Richard II, listing ten grievances against the Lord of the Manor of Deeping and his tenants. He alleged that they had assaulted the abbot’s servants at Deeping market; prevented them from taking provisions to the abbey by river; and seized wagons and horses on the way to Crowland, badly beating one of the drivers. The Lord of Deeping Manor was Sir Thomas Holland, also known as Lord Wake, who had a reputation for being cruel, and ruthlessly enriching himself.

The remains of Crowland Abbey

In medieval times, disputes often arose between Deeping people and the monks at Crowland Abbey over fishing and access to the fenland. In 1391, Lord Wake complained to the king that the abbot had seized a large part of the marsh at Deeping - over two miles long - and damaged a dyke

Clearly, both sides gave as good as they got, with local people caught in the crossfire between two powerful men. St Bartholomew’s Day Fair, held at Crowland every August was a risky place for visitors from Deeping. In 1391, Thomas Wake’s men were robbed and beaten at the fair, put in the stocks and then thrown into the water. It was alleged that afterwards the abbot and his servants “knowing these outrages had been committed” enjoyed food and drink!

A chronicler recorded that in May 1393, a vast multitude of people of Deeping came into the marshes with an armed force and “outrageously threw to the ground the Cross called Kenulph’s Stone.” They were said to have broken it into pieces and thrown it into the marshes. The Stone, named after an earlier abbot called Kenulph, marked the boundary between land belonging to Crowland and Deeping. It would originally have been a tall stone pillar, and the remains can still be seen at the end of Willow Drove in Newborough, by the side of a field dyke. It is now a scheduled ancient monument, as the base is believed to date from around 1200 AD. The top stone was replaced in 1817, when “K” was carved on one side and “H” on the opposite face, signifying the division between Kesteven and Holland districts. Crowland Abbey’s existence came to an end in 1539, when all its monastic buildings were destroyed on the orders of King Henry VIII. Only the nave and aisles of the abbey church survived, to become the parish church of Crowland.

I will be flying to Nepal on March 18th to embark on a trek to Everest Base Camp to raise funds for these charities. We will be hiking to an altitude of 5,364m, starting on March 22nd, giving me a few days to prepare before beginning the expedition. The trek to Base Camp will take place over the course of twentythree days and I will be going

with Boundless Himalayas, an established trekking company. As I have never attempted anything like this before, it will certainly be a challenge for me!

Nature

The Spring-time Rituals of the Great Crested Grebe and the Marsh Harrier

E

[ by David Denman ]

It is the return of colour that is most striking for me. The white hedge blossoms and blue woodland carpets and the bright yellow brimstone butterflies are the signs for me that we have arrived in spring.

verywhere, species of animals, birds and plants are busy. Through the day the noisy jackdaws and rooks make Market Deeping a hive of activity, whilst dusk is a time for territoryobsessed blackbirds to call loudly. At 3am, in amongst the newer houses in Deeping St. James, a female tawny owl was calling so loudly it woke our dogs! The subsequent, early dawn walk was rewarded by the comical sight of a carrion crow struggling to fly with a branch that was far too long for its nest! Spring is often linked to love and giving, and the natural world is no exception. It really is worth visiting one of our many local lakes at this time of the year to witness an astonishing courtship display. Great crested grebes have an intimate and intricate springtime courtship ritual. They mirror each other’s movements - head turning and nodding with the elaborate feathers around both birds’ heads fluffed to the max. Then they dive and come back to the surface very close together, both rearing out of the water, almost standing on their tails, turning their heads in sequence.

An additional stage to the ceremony involves both birds diving and coming back to the surface each holding in their beaks a sprig of pond weed. As if performing a scripted dance, the pair will then stand out of the water, presenting each other with pond weed. This is a “once seen, never forgotten” wildlife experience and it is on your doorstep at this time of year! The marsh harrier, one of our finest and rarest raptors and which has a foothold in this area, also has an amazing courtship display. Known as “skydancing”, the male reaches a high altitude then slices through the air downwards sometime looping the loop - all to impress the nearby female. The pair also indulge in the “food-pass” where the male hands over a prey specimen to the female in mid-flight with the female taking the prey from the male’s talon high above the reed habitat where they nest. The conservation effort that so many organisations have put in over the last forty years to create new reedbeds is starting to pay dividends for the rare marsh harrier and its fellow rare reedbed dweller, the bittern. Both have increased numbers in the UK but are still rare. Both species breed in large reed beds and are both ground nesters. Incredibly, observations have been made by ornithologists of bitterns predating the nests of marsh harriers which is not the desired conservation outcome!

Liberty Partnership are delighted to launch

‘The Liberty Lunch’ to celebrate our community champions and those people that go the extra mile

BY RICHARD ASH CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AND DIRECTOR You may know one of those ‘champions’ who always helps where they can or goes that extra mile for a neighbour, a stranger or a friend, and if you do then we would like to hear from you. Our plan is to offer a modest reward of lunch out at a local pub, diner, coffee shop or eatery up to the value of £100. We would ask that this offer is taken up locally to support our fantastic local businesses. We will select a monthly ‘champion’ from any nominations we receive. When contacting us, we would ask that you say who they are, how you feel they have positively contributed towards our community, and provide their contact information, having asked their permission to do so. Please see this as being a good thing, something to celebrate, a way in which we at Liberty Partnership can celebrate our community. Sadly, we will not be able to recognise everyone, which we hope you all understand.

To make a nomination

Please e-mail us at: thelibertylunch@liberty-partnership.co.uk or write to us or drop a note through our door to: 104 Church Street, Market Deeping, Peterborough, PE6 8AL.

Deeping’s Alan McKie is

“Liberty Lunch Champion”

T

he Waggon and Horses at Langtoft was chosen by this month’s nominated local resident as the venue for their well-deserved award. The scheme involves The Liberty Partnership in Market Deeping offering a meal to the value of £100 to anyone who has been nominated for having made a significant contribution to their local community. Alan McKie of Horsegate, Deeping St James, was nominated by Tom Jordan for his wonderful contributions to two separate organizations, all entirely voluntary with no remuneration whatsoever. As Tom explains, “Alan is a pensioner who has resided in the Deepings for over thirty years and now that he has fully retired from his occupation, he has ‘gone the extra mile’ to serve the local community.

Raised in Sunderland, Alan moved south in 1988 for his Sales Manager role in the telecommunications industry in Peterborough. He later ran The Crown and Anchor pub in Bridge Street, Deeping St James with his wife, Ann, before retiring. Clearly wanting to remain active and involved in his community, Alan joined the Men’s Group seven years ago, and two years later, he began his coordinating role in the Patient Participation Group.

He is the main coordinator for the Deepings Voluntary Car Scheme for transporting patients to and from hospital; the Deepings practice on Godsey Lane; and other institutions related to health. He has been fundamental to the success of this scheme, and, in addition, he represents the Car Scheme on the Patient Participation Group, helping to ensure that the practice patients’ needs are always met.”

Alan is very keen to point out that he is far from being alone in all his public-spirited ventures. The Car Scheme is only successful, for instance, because of the two other coordinators and the eighteen drivers who make up the team. Similarly, in the Men’s Group, Alan modestly explains that he is but one of a team of five.

“In addition, Alan is a very active team member of the Deepings Men’s Group and goes round the various hostelries, clubs, and other establishments to collect the collection cans. He then counts all the cash before passing it on to the club treasurer. Furthermore, he works shifts at the Men’s Group stores, sorting out the apparatus and ensuring that the equipment is in good working order before passing it on to those in need.”

Alan and Ann invited Tom Jordan and his wife Betty to share the generous award, and all enjoyed a delicious lunch on March 3rd at The Waggon and Horses in Langtoft.

Get Your Home ‘Springready’ While Avoiding a DIY Drama! By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades The Easter break is traditionally a time when “DIY-ers” and spring-cleaners roll up their sleeves and tackle all manner of jobs around the home. This may include plans to move house or maybe a long-awaited garden makeover. If you are selling your home, then you will want it to look its very best to keep you one step ahead of the competition. Beating the rush means you can start showcasing your property earlier than others, so now is the perfect time to get serious about selling. Alternatively, if a thorough spring clean is on your agenda, then here are our super six tips: 1 Take one room at a time – this way you won’t get overwhelmed by the task and be ruthless with your de-cluttering. Ask yourself, “Does the item make me happy, does it serve a purpose, and when was the last time I used it?” 2 Kitchen: start with the cupboards and then move on to the cutlery drawer (tip: soak teastained teaspoons in a mug of water with a few drops of vinegar), microwave, kettle, and toaster. 3 Bedroom: empty the wardrobe and discard anything you haven’t worn in the past year or if it doesn’t fit. Sell good condition clothes and bag up others for charity. 4 Your working area: maintain a clutter-free environment, going through paperwork, refiling, or shredding as you go along. Have a digital de-clutter too. 5 Children’s bedrooms: encourage them to go through their belongings and donate any unwanted items to charity. In return, treat them to some new bed linen or some new funky storage boxes. 6 Keep walls clutter-free! If you have got newly decorated walls, only put back up pictures and photographs that you really want. If you don’t have the time, skill or confidence to give your home the makeover it deserves, then Safe Local Trades can put you in contact with many reputable and reliable professionals to help make your home sparkle this spring. Whether it’s cleaning or de-cluttering, odd jobs around the home, decorating, bringing new life to your upholstery, installing a new kitchen or bathroom, getting the windows professionally cleaned or your garden landscaped – they have tried, tested and reliable tradespeople for the job; however big or small. www.safelocaltrades.com A P R IL 2 0 2 2

School News

Deeping St James Community Primary School

W

e’re delighted that school sports have returned, in earnest! Many of our Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 children represented our school at the annual Stamford Welland Academy Cross Country Event on Saturday March 5th. Despite the freezing weather, they acquitted themselves magnificently and we are very proud of everyone’s efforts,

against some excellent competition from across several local schools. With thanks to Mrs Duffy for organising and marshalling on the day, Stamford Welland Academy for hosting, and to all the parents who also braved the elements to support the team. Meanwhile, our netballers had the opportunity of playing in a tournament, hosted by Baston Primary School. All the children competed in an excellent spirit and were delighted to have the opportunity to play against each other again. Football returns later this month…

William Hildyard Celebrate World Book Day – March 3rd The theme for World Book Day this year was bedtime stories, and the children at William Hildyard C of E Primary School in Market Deeping came, dressed in their night-time clothes! In the morning, the teachers swapped classes and shared their favourite book. They gave the children opportunities to enjoy speaking and listening and doing some craft activities based on the book. In the afternoon, each Key Stage 2 child shared a book (or their own writing) with a younger child from the Foundation Stage or Key Stage 1. The teachers videoed themselves reading a bedtime story and these were published on YouTube on World Book Day. In just

three days, the videos had been viewed almost seven hundred times! To keep the enthusiasm for reading going after World Book Day, a Book Fair was held in the school hall. During the next few weeks, William Hildyard will be giving out reading boxes to several children. A big thank you to The Deeping Lions for their support with this. Mrs Lucas (the English subject leader) said, “I would like to say a huge thank you to all the William Hildyard parents and the local community for their support. I hope we have encouraged our children to read whatever, whenever and wherever they can and that this leads to a life-long love of reading.”

Baston C of E Primary School In Year 3 outdoor learning, the children have been designing, making, and erupting volcanoes. This term, Year 2 are learning about The Great Fire of London; about how the fire started, how it spread so quickly and the King’s orders to try to stop the fire. We’ve read part of Samuel Pepys’s diary to learn about his experience of the fire and his peculiar decision to bury his cheese! In outdoor learning, you’ll see they’ve used natural materials to build the houses of London in 1666. Four local schools from our cluster took part in a small netball tournament. A total of six teams entered from

Baston, Langtoft, Deeping St James and William Hildyard, and a great afternoon was enjoyed by all. Baston Red retained the trophy, with Baston Black taking silver medals, whilst Langtoft A came third. On March 3rd, we celebrated World Book Day. Children dressed up as one of their favourite characters for the day. The whole school did work based on the book, “Beegu”, by Alexis Deacon.

Hands-on History at Linchfield! What a busy term at Linchfield Community Primary School and Pre-School in Deeping St James!

Year 3 pupils had a wonderful trip to Flag Fen where they learnt all about the pre-historic ages. Pupils were able to handle artefacts dating from the Stone Age, Iron Age and Bronze Age. The children learnt about Stone Age pottery and made their own pottery designs using clay. Pupils from Year 6 invited ‘History Off the Page’ into school, so they could experience life as Vikings for the day. They had a great time being potters, illuminators, metal workers, wise women, beekeepers, and rune casters. Then they learnt how to be Viking warriors! To celebrate the 25th anniversary of World Book

Day, all the staff and children came to school dressed as their favourite book characters and the whole school took part in a book exchange. We also enjoyed a whole school assembly where the children showed off their costumes. Thank you to our amazing ‘Friends of the School’ (the FLS) for the brand-new playground equipment they bought for the whole school to enjoy. It has been amazing to see the children outside at breaktimes engaged in a variety of games and enjoying all our new equipment! 01778 347450 enquiries@linchfield-cit.co.uk Crowson Way, Deeping St James, Peterborough, PE6 8EY www.linchfield-cit.co.uk

Ever thought of teaching?

Now’s the time!

The Deepings SCITT is a highly valued provider in South Lincolnshire. (Ofsted, 2022)

We are approaching a decade of high-quality teacher training here at The Deepings and it is great to have the Ofsted stamp of approval as it means we can choose the top talent and develop them into the very best teachers for the children in our county. The recruitment of teachers is always an issue, even more so post-pandemic, and in England, there are now 15000 fewer teachers than there were in 2010 and by 2024 there will be a projected 47000 shortfall.

If you have a degree already (however old!) you can train on your Leaders are ambitious doorstep. The Deepings SCITT and its partner schools see our for their trainees… trainees trusting schools and current teaching staff to train them rather than going down the traditional university route. We offer expectations are high… one day a week core training (in Deeping for secondary, or Bourne trainees attain well. for primary) with the rest of the week spent training ‘on the job’ (Ofsted, 2022) with a mentor in your host schools. We have a range of placements, both primary and secondary, across The Deepings, Bourne, Spalding, Peterborough, Stamford, Boston and a few further afield. We have vacancies for a September 2022 start and we are looking for people who have (or will have) a degree, have a passion for teaching and want to inspire young people to fulfil their potential. We would love to have a chat with you about the exciting teacher training opportunities available.

Friendly faces await!

A garden water feature can act as an impressive focal point, whether placed on the patio, on gravel or in the middle of a lawn. Buy directly from them online and secure the most competitive prices. A P RI L 2 0 2 2

high!) and their high-quality striking designs. There is a range of styles available, all made from rattan, resin, or stainless steel, so remaining strong and durable during bad weather. Most of the solar powered water features also come with LED lights so they become an attraction throughout those long, warm, summer evenings. Outdoor Living UK have over two thousand solar water features, which have battery back-up and, as they are wire-less, they can be placed anywhere in the garden. Whilst the initial cost of the solar option might be higher than a similar, standard item, the long-term savings will significantly outweigh that initial extra amount. It is also great to be able to enjoy a beautiful feature whilst at the same time looking after the environment. For more information, please call 01733 688464 (office hours are 9am – 1pm).

All Dermal Fillers! ermal fillers help to diminish fine lines and wrinkles while, at the same time, allowing fullness to return to the face. Unfortunately, as we age our faces lose their fat, and the facial muscles must work closer to the skin surface causing lines and loose skin to become more apparent. The facial skin also stretches, which adds to the loss of volume, although sun exposure, genetics and lifestyle also play a part. The fillers can help with plumping thin lips, softening facial creases and wrinkles, enhancing shallow contours, improving the appearance of scarring, and also reconstructing contour deformities in the facial area. These are very helpful in delaying early signs of ageing, although they are only temporary. Results are obvious straightaway and last anywhere between twelve and eighteen months in some people, such as non-drinkers or non-smokers. Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that are injected beneath the skin, and both men and women choose this popular facial rejuvenation treatment as it is a cost-effective way to look younger without surgery or any downtime. Call us now and book in for a free consultation if you would like to discuss these treatments more, and why not take advantage of this amazing offer in April? Let us get you looking like a more youthful version of yourself!

TREATMENT REVIEW

Alistair and Julie both great people. My first time having any treatment so was nervous, mainly about the results, but should not have been. Had marionette lines, upper and lower filled. Wow, results were excellent, not over done, produced the "healthier" look I was looking for. Can't recommend them highly enough.

A slow flowing and gentle moving meditation magine suffering from a condition which confines you to your bed, a condition for which there appears to be no longterm solution from the medical people who are treating you. The symptoms seem endless, the anxiety and severe palpitations aren’t going away, and you are told there’s only a 4% likelihood of returning to your former health.

This was how Deeping lady, Hannah Gosling, was facing a very uncertain future on her return from living in the USA. Two years ago, however, an NHS worker introduced the wheelchair-bound Ms Gosling to qigong, an ancient Chinese, internal meditative exercise practice, dating back over 3,000 years. After just a few small daily practices, Hannah could feel improvements and, within three months, the wheelchair had gone; within a year, she was mobile and confident enough to travel alone. Inspired beyond words, Hannah continued to practise qigong twice daily. Realising that there were no classes locally, she decided to learn all about it for herself and then to teach others. She became fully qualified with the BHQA (British Health Qigong Association) and six months ago started offering classes in “health qigong”, a branch of qigong, from her premises in The Green School, Church Street, in Market Deeping. Those people with chronic illnesses, sports injuries, muscle damage, post-chemotherapy conditions and indeed, “long-Covid” are all likely to feel considerable benefits. Hannah is very keen to point out, however, that qigong is not just for the sick, but for anyone, of any age or ability, who is looking to slow down and find a little inner peace whilst taking care of their mind and body. It’s a simple

40

Deepings

procedure; the movements are easy to learn and accessible to all, standing or sitting down; just wear some comfortable loose-fitting clothes and bring along a drink! Using a series of graceful, slow flowing movements, qigong can provide an enormous range of health benefits. These include the lowering of blood pressure, stress, and anxiety levels; reduction of fatigue; improved balance and flexibility; soothing and assisting digestion; easing joint pain and improving heart health. So, if you are looking to improve your health and well-being in a friendly, group environment, why not try one of Hannah’s classes? (£5 for the hour, and the first one is free!) For more specific needs, contact her directly about private sessions at £35 an hour, whilst smaller sessions can be arranged at a lower rate. If you are feeling the need to devote some time from your ultra-busy weekly routine, and you want to take out a precious hour of “me-time” to turn off and calm those frayed nerves, then Health Qigong with Hannah could be for you. Visit Hannah’s website at www.healthqigongwith hannah.co.uk and see her Facebook pages for some glowing recommendations.

Letting go of Negative Thoughts Strategies that Work

[ by Lucy Briggs ]

Recently, I walked past a pond and saw a plate shattered at the bottom. I smiled to myself, which might sound strange, but this plate was special.

S

omeone had written their negative thoughts, feelings, and experiences on it. I imagined this person brimming with emotion as they hurled their plate into the water, watching it smash on the stones, and the relief they must have felt afterwards. Now, while I may not recommend throwing plates into ponds (we don’t want to injure any wildlife!) it made me think of several similar exercises that I have encountered during my time as a therapist, and as a service user of mental health services, which I wanted to share with you.

1

Leaves on a stream! Is there something you want to let go of? Write it on a leaf (or simply imagine that this is what the leaf represents, as they can be rather tricky to write on), pop it on a stream, and watch your worries float away. This is a widely recognised technique which I learned from our wonderful NHS Local Mental Health Team. Similarly, I find that writing something down and then burning it (safely!) can be extremely therapeutic.

60 48

2

Write a letter. Sometimes, it can be difficult to find the right words. Try writing a letter to someone. Pour your heart out, be completely honest, but this particular letter is not to be sent. Instead, bin it, lock it in a drawer, bury it, tear it up – whatever feels best for you. Merely writing down your feelings can be super helpful, even though the recipient will never read their letter.

3

Free writing. There are no rules here! Spend ten minutes or so writing. It can be complete nonsense, fiction, song lyrics… whatever is on your mind, as long as you just keep writing. Even if you end up writing about how stupid writing is, something useful is bound to come up. The experience of dumping a load of information from our brain onto the page has been shown to be beneficial for our mental wellbeing.

4

A simple ‘To Do’ list. I often find myself in bed, late at night, thinking about the many millions of things that I must do. Yet if I take the time to write a list down, and I see my tasks staring back at me, I realise that it’s barely anything compared to what I imagined. Wishing you all a happy and healthy spring.

Will & Probate Services

Take the next

STEP!

ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING Director Will and Probate Services

In the sixteen years that I have run Will & Probate Services, there has always been one qualification that has been the ‘gold-standard’ in our industry – full membership of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).

F

or many years, achieving it was a pipe dream. I left school at sixteen with a bunch of ‘O’ Levels and this was a ‘Masters’ level qualification, involving three to four years of study, and having to write four academic papers, five thousand words each, fully researched and referenced. Put simply, I didn’t think it was for me; I wasn’t good enough. Until I decided that I was! So, three years ago, I decided to go for it, do the study and put my knowledge to the test. I wrote my first paper on ‘Proprietary Estoppel’ (don’t ask!) and it passed. The following year, I wrote about the ‘Validity of Wills’ and the ‘Role of Executors’, and then finally, last October saw me submitting my final essay on ‘Testamentary Capacity in the Elderly’.

“That’s fine”, I hear you say, (some might even be congratulating me!) “but what does that mean for me as a potential client?” The STEP qualification concentrates on high-net-worth families and strategies for dealing with family wealth across generations, as well as the problems that family wealth can bring. By understanding all these issues, I can advise you and your family, and you can be certain that the strategies and planning tricks and tips that we use for multi-millionpound families are put to effective use in your planning … ensuring that your family keeps and makes the most of what is yours. Oh, and if you happen to be a multi-millionaire looking for some gold-standard advice on end-of-lifeplanning, then “Hello!”

Then, in January this year, the e-mail arrived; I had passed my final test and all that was needed was for the membership committee to approve my application. On March 1st, I got the e-mail, I was in! A sixteen-year dream achieved … the highest level of qualification in my industry.

Everyone deserves the absolute best advice, and we have always been committed to providing it for our clients – now I have the qualification to prove it! Call us today for an initial consultation about your needs – 01778 252301. Nick Ash, TEP

Advice

Getting a refund for a Cancelled or Delayed Train

back for a delay or cancellation. You are entitled to a full refund if your train was cancelled - it doesn’t matter what type of ticket you bought. The amount you can claim depends on which train company you travelled with - check your ticket if you’re not sure. You can claim compensation by visiting the train company’s website - most have online forms you can use. You’ll probably need to upload a picture of your ticket.

With many of us using train services to visit places or commute to work, this month we take you through some of your options concerning getting a refund for a cancelled or delayed train.

You can write them a letter if you’d prefer. You’ll need to give details of your journey and send your original tickets. It’s a good idea to make copies of them in case your letter goes missing - a digital photograph or scan will do. You should get a refund within a month.

If you are delayed and arrive at your destination more than half an hour late, you’ll usually be able to get some money back. Some train companies will also give you compensation if your train is more than fifteen minutes late. You need to keep your train tickets to get a refund. You should try to claim within twenty-eight days, but some train companies allow longer.

A lot of companies offer vouchers to use on future train journeys. You don’t have to accept them - if you want a cash refund, you can insist on it.

If you travelled with Transport for London (TfL), for example on the London Underground, you could visit their website to find how much you could get and how to claim. If you have a season ticket, the best thing to do is ask at your ticket office or check your train company’s website. You’ll usually be able to get some money

If you would like any more information or advice about this issue, please do not hesitate to call Adviceline on 0808 278 7996 to speak to a trained adviser. We are here to help you find a way forward.
