Welcome to your May issue...

W

hat better way to welcome you all, than with a smile? Mid-May to Mid-June every year happens to be “National Smile Month”, one of the U.K’s largest and longest-running campaigns to promote good oral health. Now over forty years old, this year’s events will be taking place between May 17th and June 17th.

In a world where plenty of things seem to succeed in making us feel perhaps inadequate and sometimes sad, it’s worth remembering that it’s always much easier to smile than it is to frown. Remember … life is like a mirror- we get the best results when we smile at it! Our May issue is hopefully going to fill you all with the joys of spring and those long, warmer days of summer just around the corner, so smile away, and let’s all get ourselves ready for the fabulous long weekend, early next month, to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee!

Claire x

This year promises to be memorable, not least for the excitement due very soon, surrounding the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. However, as some of us not-so-young folk of Bourne and district may recall, May 20th, 1962, was a very special day! Sixty years ago, at Zandvoort in the Dutch Grand Prix, Graham Hill won the first of the BRM’s glorious Formula One racing car victories that season, a season which was to see the Bourne-based team win both the World Drivers’ and the Constructors’ Championship. Yes, and all from a small factory on Spalding Road, now occupied by Golding, Young and Mawer auctioneers. Let the celebrations begin (and all at 1962 prices)! Thanks are due (strangely, I know) to the readers who keep asking me for little bits of monthly mirth, just like this … “My Uncle Eric invented the cold air balloon, but it never really took off.” “I once went into the John Lewis electrical department and said, “Can someone sell me a food mixer?” The guy said, “Kenwood?” I said, “Can you go and fetch him then?” Enjoy the read!

Langtoft Primary School

I

t has been an exciting time in school with the increase in visitors and the opportunity to get out and about to enrich our learning.

Key Stage Two have been welcoming engineers into school to enhance their science learning with a rocket building workshop. In Key Stage 1, they have visited Peterborough Museum to explore historical life in school.

in iron usage across the world. The children had a fantastic time at the open-air museum at Blists Hill Victorian Town, where they were taken back to the 19th Century starting with a lesson in the village school. Year 4 will be looking forward to their residential at the start of the Summer Term to Stibbington Environmental Centre, where they will engage in science, geography and art-based topics – a fabulous opportunity to enrich their learning further alongside becoming more independent, staying away from home.

The Year 5 children have recently returned from a very engaging residential at Ironbridge. This involved further exploring the bridge’s history and the increase

Northborough School There have been residential visits for Year 4 to Stibbington; ‘Bikeability’ sessions for Year 5; Years 1 and 2 local study walks; an ‘Egyptian Day’ for Year 3; and a ‘Victorian Day’ for Year 5. Children from Years 5 and 6 competed against local schools at Arthur Mellows Village College in netball and football competitions. PE lead, Jan Pell, said, “It was just fantastic to see the children’s smiling faces and their competitive spirit!” Northborough won gold and silver in the netball, and silver in the football. Whole school events have included fundraising for Red Nose Day; a ‘STEM Day’ with a range of science and technology activities; Book Week events; and a Mothers’ Day gift shop.

We are also raising money to support refugees from Ukraine by collectively running the distance from our school to Ukraine. Euphemia from the Student Council wrote to the parents to thank them, saying, “We have finished walking and running around our field, trying to raise money for the children of Ukraine. We really appreciate how much you have contributed so far - a whopping £892.19. We have now arrived at the Russian border.” Our Planet Protectors have continued to develop our grounds by sowing seeds into a wildflower labyrinth, supporting the work at the Tower of London to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. We can’t wait to see what they look like in the summer!

Baston C of E Primary School Year 4 went on a residential to Rock UK, an outdoor adventure centre in Northamptonshire, for three days. The children had a go at many activities including indoor climbing, canoeing and archery. A few members of Year 6 helped Mrs Webb, our Science teacher, to clear our pond, so that we can start to use it for pond dipping in the summer terms. Year 6 celebrated a graduation ceremony after completing a ten-week ‘DAaRT (drug, alcohol and resilience training) Course’ with Mrs B. Key Stages 1 and 2 celebrated Easter on the last day of term. Key Stage 1 performed at school, whilst Key Stage 2 walked to church where parents were invited to come and watch their children celebrate Easter. 6

Welcome to Caverstede Nursery School ocated in Walton, Peterborough, Caverstede has been a nursery school within the community since 1946. We have evolved over the years to become the Outstanding Nursery School that we are today, welcoming children and families from across the whole of Peterborough and outlying areas.

Our highly qualified and experienced staff work in close partnership with families, outside agencies and transferring settings/schools to ensure our provision is appropriate for every child. We value diversity as a rich resource to support the learning for all. Children make excellent progress throughout their time with us, which helps prepare them ready for school. Within the school, there are three classes. Each is purpose-built, on one level and appropriate for the age of the children we teach. Our classrooms are carefully planned to enable us to fully implement the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and furnished in such a way as to ensure that children can learn independently - being able to choose their own resources.

From each classroom, our extensive outdoor learning environment can be easily reached, and we are very proud of our nursery and woodland gardens. These are accessed all year round due to adequate shelter in the garden and wet-weather suits! Each class has their own woodland day experience one day a week and these continue to be thoroughly enjoyed. Opportunities are also available to develop forest skills – building fires and den building, just two activities out of many that are enjoyed! For full information of what we offer, please visit our website www.caverstede.peterborough.sch.uk.

Long-course Debutant, Ashton, Smashes Records at Corby Swimming Meet

D

eepings Swimming Club excelled at the start of its long-course season, as eleven swimmers (from the thirtyeight-strong team) brought home medals from the Corby Amateur Swimming Club open meet at the end of March. Competing against a high-class field, Deepings came away with twenty-nine medals, (six gold, eight silver and fifteen bronze).

Making his debut in a long-course pool, nine-year-old Ashton Hunter claimed six medals and smashed six Deepings long-course club records, all while racing against older boys in the 10/11yrs age group. His sister, Sadie, came away with three medals of her own.

“ON THE EDGE”: NORTHBOROUGH WI

“We are a lively, friendly bunch who love to welcome new members. We have a varied programme of speakers and activities throughout the year and are keen to share food and other interests, as well as organising various outings, running a book club and a walking group. Being involved with our local community is also important to us, so last October we organised a scarecrow trail which was enthusiastically supported, despite the wet and windy weather. Preparations for our next trail are already under way and will be held in October this year. Our next two meetings will be held on Friday May 13th and Friday June 10th at 7.30pm in Northborough Village Hall (PE6 9DP).

Adding five medals to the Deepings collection was Jacob Briers in the 14 years age group, whilst Millie Herrick achieved the unusual feat of medalling in all four freestyle events in the 15yrs age group. Deepings Club Captain, Harry Cardell was his usual model of consistency, picking up three medals. Further excellent, medal-winning performances came from Kendra Greenwood-Covell, Jack Bell, Chloe Bellis, Lucy Jenkinson, James Cash, and Penny Baxter. Lynn Chapman, Deepings Swimming Club Head Coach, was delighted with the performances in the club’s first long-course competition for eight months, commenting, “We had a lot of swimmers who haven’t competed in a 50-metre pool before but none of them were overawed by the occasion.

“It’s Never Too Late!”

All of us, if not most of us, have some time in our lives uttered the words, “I must write a book!” and dreamed of it being published.

Well, two Deeping St James residents, Maggie Holden and her partner Denis Stapleton, both well into their ‘senior citizenships’, have achieved that ambition. Their inspiration came after their sixteen-year-old pet cat, Monty, sadly passed away and they decided that the book they both wanted to produce was a tribute to their muchloved friend. Their sixty-five-page story, “When Monty Met Alfie”, written

Deepings

in verse and humorously illustrated, is the tale of when a small ginger kitten arrives through a hole in the hedge from his garden next door and learns how to develop into a fully grown-up cat under the expert eye of his newly found friend, Monty. And it hasn’t stopped there. A second follow-up book, “Alfie Leaps into Spring”, tells of Alfie’s ventures into the big wide world and his new friends that he meets on the way. Both books which will appeal to cat lovers of all ages are available on Amazon, and a further three are planned to complete the series. MAY 2022

Joan Wake Close Social Club Seeks Your Help arket Deeping’s Joan Wake Close Social Club is bidding for a cash boost from the Tesco Community Grants initiative. Tesco works with community charity, Groundwork, to run its community funding scheme, which sees grants of up to £1,500, £1,000, and £500 awarded to local community projects. Three groups in every community have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant. Joan Wake Close Social Club is one of the groups on the shortlist. Joan Wake Close is an independent living scheme in Market Deeping, set within a private and secure location, designed specifically for people aged fifty-five and over. It has a very clear aim to supply affordable meals, wellbeing events and social activities, all in a safe place, and to enjoy each other’s company. The group works together to

cook meals which are available and affordable for other residents to take full advantage of, paying a donation which suits their budget. The club is certified by both FareShare and Neighbourly, giving them access to food and other goods which can no longer be sold in supermarkets. So far, they have saved 6338 kg of food which was destined for the tip. Each month, the club hosts a brunch which has been very well supported by residents and their families. Each Friday, they hold a coffee morning for all to join in with. Voting is open in all Tesco stores in April, May, and June. Customers can cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out each time they shop. Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities, particularly those helping to provide food and giving children the support that they need for a good start in life. Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online. To find out more visit www.tesco.com/ communitygrants.

Will & Probate Services

Ethical Wills

It is not just about the Law

ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING Director Will and Probate Services

I

Ethics and professional standards are at the heart of everything that we do. guess you would expect that from a law firm. But ethics in business go much wider, bringing in everything from modern slavery to the environment. So, this month I wanted to tell you about our efforts to offset the footprint that our work creates.

Don’t worry though; we have a modern slavery policy, and we make sure that we do everything possible to make our staff as happy and well rewarded in their careers – including a four-day working week for everyone. Our sector is quite old fashioned, and almost everything we do involves lots of paperwork. For the past year, we have been working with ‘TreeNation’ to make sure that the trees that are used in producing your legal documents are replanted. This means we are regenerating forests and offsetting our carbon footprint. In the past year, we have planted almost five hundred trees in the ‘Trees for Tigers’ project in India and, at Christmas, we planted almost a hundred Christmas trees, rather than sending out cards to our clients. Our websites are Net Zero websites, and our team is signed up to the Net Zero team concept, meaning that all our carbon emissions are offset. We are also working with ‘Pawprint’ to empower our employees to fight climate change at home, work and beyond.

So, what does that mean to you as a client? It means that you can be confident that your planning has the minimal environmental impact, whilst making the maximum impact on your family’s future security. It means you will get a tree or two in an area that is helping to support endangered tigers in India. Most of all, you will be helping a local firm to tread lightly on the planet. If you like the sound of what we are doing for the planet and we align with your values, call us for a free consultation on 01778 252301.

Your Garden

M

May Gardening Tips

ay can be a month of extremes so be prepared for late frosts, sunny dry spells, and/or high winds. The biggest threat is to the newly emerging seedlings and plants that have recently been transplanted. If it is hot, make sure they are well watered and give them some shade protection or protect them from drying winds. If there is a late frost, cover your tender crops with fleece, bubble wrap or similar. Seeds that were sown last month, such as carrots, beetroot and parsnips will need thinning out whilst they are still very small. Once they have been thinned out, water along the row and it is better to water less frequently but more thoroughly, as this gets down to the roots. Earth up potatoes when the leaves are about 20cm tall; draw up the earth on either side to form a ridge approx. 15cms high and this will protect the foliage from frost and stop the tubers going green. Keep on top of the weeds by hoeing regularly, preferably in dry weather so they cannot re-establish themselves. Aphids never seem to go away but you can control them by doing any of the following: • Stir together 1 quart of water, 1 tsp of washing-up liquid and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Do not dilute before spraying on plants. • Peppermint, spearmint, and pennyroyal naturally deter aphids and ants, so plant

24

Deepings

(or put them in pots) throughout the vegetable plot. • Plant flowers that attract the pest predators such as marigold and nasturtiums. • Spray the affected plants with soapy water (diluted washing up liquid) or squash the flies with your thumb and finger. Or you can buy organic pesticide. Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous to list, but include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas. Succession sowing ensures that you have a continual supply and not a glut of the same crop and is particularly good for salad crops which you need to cut and use immediately. Indoors, sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines, and cabbages and, towards the end of the month when the risk of frost has gone, they can be planted outdoors. Other jobs to do this month include: • Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage. • Pot on growing plants. • Put up bean and pea supports. • Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year. • Put some straw underneath developing strawberry fruits to keep them off the soil and try to avoid watering overhead to reduce any problems with mildew. Happy gardening!

“Let there be Light!”

Bourne Abbey Church Gets an Electrical Upgrade BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

I

t’s been a month since we told you about our project at Bourne Abbey, and some

of you may have been able to view the updated lighting during the Easter period. Whilst carrying out this work, it quickly became apparent that the lighting would highlight the paint on the radiators that had begun to flake. Working with conservation specialist, Architettura, we were able to refresh the paint on the high-level radiators, leaving the church with a fresh look. We acted swiftly at the beginning of the project to ensure this could be completed at the same time, meaning that we will now be able to complete our handover this month. Here’s a chance to enjoy the photos of the completed work:

If you would like us to look at lighting at a church you attend, please contact us and we will be happy to offer a free consultation to see what your options are; whether the reason be poor lighting or you wanting to save money, we can help.

Nature

Springtime

and Nests to be Built

T

[ by David Denman ]

May is a super busy month for nearly all species, and the main activity is the propagation of the species, be it plants or animals.

he excellent Easter weather allowed plenty of time to listen to the singing skylarks that have been much in evidence over local fields where they nest. Unlike most of our local birds, they sing on the wing, their song still audible as they climb higher and higher, spiralling out of sight. This ground nester is one of those bird species that are on the decline, but they are fortunately still a familiar sight and sound in our area. Spring is full of milestones – first swallow, first frogspawn, first dragonfly etc, etc. The nest builders always intrigue me. Why do some species make intricate nests and why do other species tend to do as little as possible? Why do rooks and carrion crows carry just one, specially chosen, branch back to their nest whilst starlings seem to gather everything they could ever use to make and furnish a nest, in one beak full? Locally, we have long-tailed tits which are frequently seen in gardens and woodland edges, usually in winter as part of a “foraging party” with blue and great tits. The long-tailed tit, as the name suggests, has

a very long tail when compared to the length of its body. So why do they make a fully enclosed, football-sized, bag-shaped nest with just a tiny entrance gap? Not only is this occupied by two adults, but also approximately six to twelve eggs! The variety of materials used is impressive – moss, feathers, wool, hair and even spiders’ webs are all used to build this most remarkable of nests. Wasps are also busy making their nests. They take slivers of wood shavings from wooden fences and trees with their powerful jaws and chew the flakes, mixing them with saliva, and then add them to the nest. Look out for small groups of wasps carefully removing tiny wood strips from garden fences and wooden sheds! Bright yellow brimstone butterflies are often on the wing in early spring sunshine, as too are the orange tip butterflies. One of the more comical insects on the wing in spring, though, is the St. Marks fly which appears around St. Mark’s Day (April 25th). The insect is big for a fly and has large wings. However, despite this, they are not quite the insect version of a jet fighter - more of a tethered balloon! It is a common species and readily seen just hanging in the air, often in small clouds, not really making any progress against the prevailing air currents. Large numbers of adults can be found in woodland edges, hedgerows, fields, and wetlands.

Local History

s e s r u o C d n a s e s Hor

B

(KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE)

efore the fenlands were drained, vast areas were used for grazing, and Lincolnshire was renowned for breeding high quality carthorses and cavalry horses. By 1700, Arabian stallions were being crossed with local mares to produce horses of great speed and endurance, known as Lincolnshire Trotters. They could carry riders at up to sixteen miles per hour and were also used to pull coaches. In 1734, horse races were advertised at Market Deeping New Course, with prizes including a very good saddle and a silver cup. The winning horse was to be sold for ten guineas – the equivalent of several thousand pounds nowadays. Horse breeding and trading continued in Deeping up to the nineteenth century, but there were no regular race meetings until a group of local businessmen decided to revive the sport in 1866. Their motive was to improve prosperity in the town by attracting visitors to the inns and shops.

Musicians paraded the streets, a brass band provided music for dancing, and a spectacular firework display was held in the evening. The racecourse was south of the river in Maxey parish and there were six races for amateur riders, including one over hurdles. The event was a great success, and, in following years, it was extended to include bicycle races and other sports. By 1871, members of the race committee, which included a doctor, miller, chemist, and solicitor, were feeling the effects of the hard work and personal expense, and Market Deeping’s races ceased.

It was almost a century later before another ‘Winning Post’ was erected in Deeping, though this time it was on a sign outside a public house! In 1955, The Wheatsheaf Inn on the corner of Towngate East was extended and converted into a racehorse-themed pub. The tables were horseshoe-shaped, with racing photographs and paintings on the wall, and a giant silver horseshoe behind the bar. The Managing Director of the brewery had racehorses in training at nearby stables owned by George Vergette (known as Mike) and the landlord of The Winning Post also worked part-time there. Mr Vergette had been a successful jockey since the age of fifteen and, from the mid-1940s, had combined running his family farm in Towngate with riding and training racehorses. His string of horses was a familiar sight, heading towards the gallops which now lie under the Deepings by-pass. One of his best horses, named Purple Silk, finished a close runner-up in the 1964 Grand National at Aintree. Mike Vergette continued as a trainer until the 1990s and died in 2008.

Construction of the Towngate Inn behind The Winning Post in 1998

40

Deepings

The Winning Post pub was demolished in 1998, after the Towngate Inn was built on part of its site, and that inn has since been converted into housing.

By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Fears that vulnerable city residents could fall foul of scammers as spring kicks in has led to an SOS for reputable gardeners to lend a hand. Charities including Age UK are often asked by those using their services to put them in touch with reliable gardening services. However, due to fears that some residents are being scammed by rogue traders who simply knock on doors touting for work, city consumer champion Eileen Le Voi, director of Safe Local Trades, has stepped in to try and help. She said, “Unfortunately, there is no local authority funding to ensure that charities looking after the interests of the elderly and vulnerable have the budget to provide these services – and sadly, too many residents fall foul of the rogues. Safe Local Trades covers a core area of the PE postcode district, from Spalding to St Neots and Stamford to Wisbech. With regular requests for garden maintenance across all areas, we are currently unable to meet the needs of our elderly customers with their request for a recommendation. This increases their risk of becoming a victim to unscrupulous cold callers.” Eileen works alongside charities and local authorities who rely on Safe Local Trades to recommend professionals to their users. She added, “The problem we currently have is that our Safe Local Trades recommended garden maintenance members are so busy that they are unable to take on new, urgent jobs or provide regular garden maintenance across the many areas. Sadly, Age UK had its funding for providing gardening services withdrawn some time ago, and so relies heavily on organisations like Safe Local Trades to step in to assist residents.” She is now appealing to PE postcode gardening businesses, who wish to join existing members to help meet the supply and demand for gardeners. As part of her role with CAPASP, Eileen is the resident expert on doorstep crime for the past fourteen years. Safe Local Trades has been showcasing tried, tested and reliable tradespeople in and around Peterborough – and some of its own members have come to the aid of vulnerable city residents who have been duped out of cash by cowboy builders and other rogue workmen. If you are a reputable gardener, who is prepared to be vetted, to join our register of reputable local tradespeople, please go to www.safelocaltrades. com/become-a-member MAY 2022

“Sew Far, Sew Good”

for April’s Liberty Lunch Champion!

W

itham-on-the-Hill lady, Teresa Mclean, is delighted to have been nominated as a “Liberty Lunch Champion”. The scheme involves The Liberty Partnership in Market Deeping offering a meal to the value of £100 to anyone who has been recognised for having made a significant contribution to their local community. Teresa’s daughter, Rhi Mclean, recently contacted us with the following suggestion. “I'd like to nominate my mum, Teresa Mclean, and her charity sewing group for the Liberty Lunch. As a volunteer sewer, she currently makes costumes for (the Stamford Shakespeare Company) Tolethorpe theatre. During the main part of the Covid pandemic, she switched her skills and made 161 pairs of scrubs (despite having arthritis and other health issues that often made this quite painful for her) and, in late December 2021, made six more pairs following an urgent appeal from the Peterborough vaccination centre.

Teresa (3rd from the left) with her eating companions at The Waggon and Horses, Langtoft.

Teresa was joined at Langtoft’s “Waggon and Horses” on April 13th by Margaret and Richard Wesson, Nora and Brian Smith, and Jan Limback, who together enjoyed a first-class meal and hospitality. Teresa explained to me that Jan has been responsible for all the valuable publicity on Facebook surrounding all the fabulous voluntary work Teresa and her colleagues have been undertaking over the last two years. Teresa is adamant that nothing she has achieved would have been possible without the hard work, support, and dedication of all the colleagues with whom she has been working on all these projects, and these include the recent organising of donations to be sent out to Poland for the Ukrainian refugees.

When the main requirement for scrubs slowed down, some of the sewers wanted other charity sewing, so she formed a sub-group to make shorts and dresses for the aid charity, ‘Dress a Girl Around the World’ and, by May 2021, had sent 374 garments in total, 98% of these were cut out ready to sew by Teresa herself! After a break for the summer and following funding for fabric, the group have been working through the autumn and winter, once again mainly on packs cut and provided by Teresa. She would like to treat the sewers to tea and cake but is financially unable Some of the many scrubs created by Teresa and her sewing colleagues. to do this on her state pension.”

Having retired has certainly not meant a ‘slowing down’ for Teresa and it was remarkable and inspiring to hear about her enormous ongoing efforts to keep helping others. “At least, the Liberty Lunch will mean someone else will have to cook my lunch for me”, she explained!

Liberty Partnership are delighted to launch

‘The Liberty Lunch’ to celebrate our community champions and those people that go the extra mile

BY RICHARD ASH CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AND DIRECTOR You may know one of those ‘champions’ who always helps where they can or goes that extra mile for a neighbour, a stranger or a friend, and if you do then we would like to hear from you. Our plan is to offer a modest reward of lunch out at a local pub, diner, coffee shop or eatery up to the value of £100. We would ask that this offer is taken up locally to support our fantastic local businesses. We will select a monthly ‘champion’ from any nominations we receive. When contacting us, we would ask that you say who they are, how you feel they have positively contributed towards our community, and provide their contact information, having asked their permission to do so. Please see this as being a good thing, something to celebrate, a way in which we at Liberty Partnership can celebrate our community. Sadly, we will not be able to recognise everyone, which we hope you all understand.

Making Sweet Music Again …

G

and Seeking New Members!

lebe Singers is a community choir based in Market Deeping, which recently performed at St. Andrew’s Church, Northborough, in their first concert since the Covid pandemic struck in 2020. The choir is made up of several friendly members who all agree that singing is good for the soul, and who relish the opportunity to be out and about again, spreading the musical word! Having previously performed in a number of local churches, and also at Burghley House on several occasions, their latest concert was a very welcome return to singing, all together, once more. Many choirs did not return following Covid, but Glebe Singers did! In fact, they recently celebrated their twentieth anniversary. During the lockdowns, rehearsals reverted to being online, but now the choir has finally been able to return to rehearsing all together, they are busy planning their next concert in July. The benefit to mental wellbeing because of singing has been well documented, and Glebe Singers would be amongst the first to reinforce this. As a community choir, their aim is to bring music to all members of the community, both by performing and encouraging people to come along and become a member. Their repertoire covers a variety of genres, from Eastern European religious pieces to songs from the shows, and much more. Under the leadership of both David Scoffield and Bart Drzewiecki, each week is full of fun and enjoyment as singing once more rings out! Rehearsals take place on Wednesdays, from 7.30pm to 9.00pm in The Green School (opposite St. Guthlac’s Church, Market Deeping). The choir would love to have more people come and join their singing team. No previous

choir experience is necessary, and if you think you would like to meet them at a rehearsal, they would love to meet you! They also have their own Facebook page and can be contacted by e-mail through glebesingers@gmail.com.
