Welcome to your July issue...
W
ow, what a fabulous, funpacked month that was! It was really heart-warming the ways in which whole communities came together to share in celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and I’m sure memories of the four-day weekend and all its various activities will live forever in our minds.
Hello Summer
Some things which a town or a village decide to organise so that everyone in that community can get together don’t just happen – it’s always down to a small number of individuals who selflessly give their time and commitment to ensuring that everything works according to a plan. In Bourne, most of the planning and ensuring that everything went ahead was in the capable hands of the Bourne Events Team and Bourne Town Council, and it is to those willing volunteers that a huge thank you is offered. Similarly, for all the other towns and villages within our “Discovering region”, take a bow all you fixers and shakers. Well done, every one of you!
Claire x
It’s almost fifty-eight years since the Motown classic, “Dancing in the Street” by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas was released, with the unforgettable suggestion: “Summer’s here and the time is right For dancing in the street.” But, as the whole country came together to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the fourth verse was to become particularly relevant: “This is an invitation across the nation A chance for folks to meet There’ll be laughing and singing and music swinging Dancing in the streets”.
And finally, •.............She just loves waiters – says they bring so much to the table.

Anti-wrinkle Treatments vs Fillers
B
What’s the difference and how can they be used together?
otox is a purified form of the botulinum toxin that can be used in small amounts to correct wrinkles and, by interrupting the nerve signals, the injected muscle is temporarily frozen. Without movement of these selected muscles in the face, certain wrinkles can be softened, reduced, or even removed. It can be used on the upper face to treat areas of concern such as the forehead, the glabellar (between the eyebrows) and crow’s feet at the side of the eyes. It can also be used to lift the eyebrows in a non-surgical brow lift. On the lower face, it can be used for lip lines, gummy smiles, wide jaws, and neck lines. Botox for the body is typically used to control excessive sweating. These treatments last typically for three months with the most effective time being six weeks after treatment. Dermal fillers are largely used to help restore lost volume to the face and hands, as well as accelerating the production of collagen in the skin where it has been depleted due to the ageing process. They are commonly used to treat lines and wrinkles, marionette lines, thin lips, nasolabial folds, jowls, and sagging skin. These typically last twelve months with the results being immediate. Even though Botox and dermal fillers are very different types of injectables, they complement each other perfectly. By combining them, different types of wrinkles can be treated and while one relaxes muscles, the other smooths them out. Both treatments are non-invasive, well tolerated by patients and very little ‘down time’ is needed, as they offer a great alternative to surgery. Why not come and meet us and let us help you freshen up those looks, once and for all?

Mum and Dad:
The ‘Superglue’ That Holds a Family Together
ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING Director Will and Probate Services
Families: who needs them?
W
ell, in truth, we all do but there is nothing like a death in the family to bring out the fractures that exist in almost every family. Just this week I have had three cases that illustrate what can happen when Mum and Dad have finally gone. My first client’s father died recently; her mother had died some years ago. He didn’t leave a will, but he did leave his partner living in the family home. The law says that the daughter, my client, is entitled to the estate, but her father’s partner thinks she (the partner) should get everything and has employed her own solicitor to fight her corner. I do, if I am honest, have some sympathy with the partner, but the law is very clear on what happens when a person dies without a will. Ultimately, this dispute will likely knock tens of thousands of pounds off the value of the estate as it is dragged through the courts by solicitors and barristers. The second client turned up with a letter, purporting to be from her mother saying that when she (Mum) died, her daughter’s son should get the family home. It was just a letter; again, there is no valid will so Mum’s wishes are simply that the letter has no effect in law, so the house, along with the rest of the estate will be split equally between my client and her sister. The problem is that they hate each other, so my client knows that any attempt to honour Mum’s wishes and get the house into the grandson’s hands are doomed.
The third client had also lost their Mum. This time, there was a will, but the three children who were all named as executors have fallen out over money that was taken by the eldest (who was Mum’s carer) before her death. The eldest child claims that the money was given to her as a thank you for caring; the younger two think that she ‘stole’ the money from Mum. The only person who could answer the question is dead, so the family are at war with each other. If Mum had had a Lasting Power of Attorney in place before her death, this wouldn’t have happened. The common theme in all three cases is that there are people who will never trust each other, and probably never speak to each other again. Relationships ruined for the want of the right planning. Three different cases … and it is only Tuesday; it might be a long week! Don’t let this happen to you and yours; get your planning in place as soon as possible. We will be happy to help, and it will cost a lot less than you think. Call us on 01778 252301 and book your free initial consultation.

Sadie Shines At Regional Championships ll of us, if not most of us, have some time in our lives uttered the words, “I must write a book!” and dreamed of it being published.
Sadie Hunter won a superb bronze medal in the 200m butterfly as Deepings Swimming Club came away from the final weekend of the East Midland Regional Championships in early May, with four finalists and numerous personal bests. Sadie was joined at the international pool in Ponds Forge, Sheffield, by Holly Leggott, Millie Herrick, and Jacob Briers, with the squad contesting twelve events between them against the best swimmers from clubs across Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, and Derbyshire. Her standout performance came on the first day as she swept into the 14yrs 200m butterfly final
as the third fastest qualifier, with a new long course personal best. In the final, Sadie came third and her time of 2:36.86 was almost two seconds quicker than the heats and set a new Deepings club record. Sadie also made the 100m butterfly final.
Jacob Briers competed in five events in the 14yrs age group and reached two finals (200m breaststroke and 200m butterfly). Other representatives from Deepings SC were Holly Leggott who raced in the 17/ over 100m and 200m events, and Millie Herrick, who competed in the 15yrs age group (100m and 200m freestyle). Lynn Chapman, Deepings Swimming Club Head Coach, said, “The team should be proud of their achievements in reaching the regional championships. Everyone performed to the best of their abilities, and I was delighted with their attitude and application of skills across all their races.”
Medals Galore for Deepings Swimming Club
An up-and-coming squad of younger swimmers represented Deepings Swimming Club at the Fenland Open Meet at the end of May and swam away with an impressive twenty-one medals. Hosted by March Marlins at Whittlesey, the event saw swimmers up to the age of eleven compete in 50m. races and those twelve and over compete in 100m. races, with everyone having the chance to contest the 100m. individual medley (100IM).

I was delighted to see so many of them enter all the events and do themselves justice – their hard work in training is really paying off.” JULY 2022
Sing for Life 2022 Supporting Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice
Launching in September, “Sing for Life” will sign up forty-plus local women to take part in a ten-week, pop-up singing project, working towards a fantastic live performance event at The Cresset this November, supporting charity partner Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice.
Y
ou’ll learn to sing, meet new people, challenge yourself, perform live on stage AND raise money for this much-loved local charity. Absolutely no previous singing experience is needed, just a willingness to get stuck in and give it a go. “Sing for Life is not about finding the next Adele; it’s about helping ordinary women find their voice,” says William Prideaux, the project’s director. After missing a year due to Covid, last year’s project was a bumper one with over one hundred brave women signing up in September 2021 and raising almost £10,000 for the charity. For most of them it was their very first experience of singing in public. Helen Kingston, Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, says: “We are delighted that “Sing for Life” 2022 will raise the roof in aid
Raluca and Reka, two of last year’s singers, who loved the experience.

We want to wish everyone taking part lots of luck – we can’t wait to hear the group hit the high notes!” The project kicks off with introduction sessions at The John Mansfield Campus, Dogsthorpe, Peterborough, PE1 4HX, when you can meet the team and some of the other women who’ll be taking part. Don’t worry, this is NOT an audition, just an opportunity to find out more and get involved. Whatever your starting point, “Sing for Life” will improve your singing and your confidence in leaps and bounds and that’s a huge confidence boost and very liberating! For more information, please visit www.peterborough sings.org.uk, email info@peterboroughsings.org.uk or call 01733 425194. Introduction sessions will be on Thursday September 8th 7pm - 10pm Friday September 9th 7pm - 10pm Saturday September 10th 2pm - 5pm Please call or email to register. The “Sing for Life” concert will be at Peterborough’s Cresset Theatre on Friday November 11th at 7.30pm.

The Magic of Music
[ by Lucy Briggs ]
Music is such a huge part of my daily routine, that I often take for granted how much it helps my mental health.
I
listen to it as I get ready. I listen to it as I work (currently playing: Kate Bush – ‘Running Up That Hill’). I never leave the house without my headphones, and I have spent countless weekends in muddy fields, or evenings in sweaty venues, singing along as I watch my favourite acts play live.
But how can enjoying music help our mental health?
1
Lyrics. I find that most of my favourite songs have words that I can identify with that give me strength, and don’t make me feel so alone. If you have trouble hearing them, a simple Google search will bring up the lyrics to any songs. Spotify now even has a ‘Lyrics’ function!
2
Bringing enjoyment to mundane tasks. I absolutely hate housework. But if I pop on an energising playlist, that all changes! Think Freddie Mercury hoovering in the Queen video for ‘I Want To Break Free’. Allow yourself to dance and make your chores more fun. I promise you; it will zoom right by!

3
Dancing! Move your body to the music, in whatever way you can. It is a well-recognised fact that exercise boosts endorphins, which make us happy. It doesn’t matter if you can’t dance well; feeling the rhythm is all that matters. As those home décor posters say, ‘Dance like no one’s watching’!
4
Singing. You don’t have to be the next Adele to sing along to a song. Get in the shower, go for a drive, and sing your heart out. Did you know that singing reduces stress, anxiety, depression, and helps to lower your heart rate? Last week, I attended a fabulous new group in Bourne called ‘Find A Voice’, which is a choir for mental health sufferers. The group will meet every Tuesday evening at 7pm in the Butterfield Centre, and is run by a wonderfully welcoming woman called Emma. I had the time of my life, and I highly suggest you check out ‘Find A Voice Choir’ on Facebook for more details. Until next time, take care of yourselves.

How Alto Electrical Can Help Save You Money BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
With energy prices going up, this article is dedicated to saving you money, and there are many things which you can do yourself to make a difference.
1 2 3
“Go LED” - If you have not done this yet, it’s time to start now. I am still surprised when I go to houses to find halogen fittings still in use. Change them straightaway; these get so hot that they are a fire risk, and they are not manufactured any more for this very reason.
If your excuse for not doing this is that you want to wait until the fittings have expired, don’t wait. The sooner you change them, the quicker you’ll notice the difference in your bank balance (plus, you don’t want the additional heat in summer!)
Use timers. You can get these cheaply and, if you are ‘tech savvy’, you can get plug-in devices that you can control by “Alexa”, or other similar product. These can be automated, and even voice and movementcontrolled. You can let your imagination run wild!
4 5 6
Is your boiler programmed properly? Don’t just keep it on all the time; be smart and make it work for you. Make sure it has a thermostat, and that it’s positioned correctly. Are fixed items like towel rails/electric heaters and tanks on timers? Get them installed, and this will save you so much money!
Are you throwing money away? Make sure your appliances are energy efficient. If you have electric heating that’s been in a long time, it’s likely that upgrading the system will save you a small fortune. Modern heaters are so energy efficient now, and much more convenient than storage heaters.
7
Do you have any electrical faults? If you’re not sure, don’t just sit on it. The electrical regulations recommend an ‘Electrical Report’ every five years, or at change of occupancy. If you’ve not had one, get it booked in now. Identifying and fixing faults can stop unnecessary costs. If you are not sure how to go about implementing this advice, you can book in via bookings.altoelectical.co.uk for a visit and we can help. All advice is complimentary, and, for any electrical services, we will provide a quote for your consideration.

Your Garden
J
uly can be a very dry month and, if it is hot, the soil temperature rises and many crops, such as broccoli, fennel, lettuce, and cabbage can bolt and render them inedible.
To help prevent this happening, keep them well watered (reducing the soil temperature) or use a mulch. Watering is so important, and it is better to water crops frequently and generously, as intermittent watering can cause problems with flowers falling, fruits failing to form and skins splitting. It is time to lift garlic: hang bulbs out in the sun or in an airy shed. Onions also need drying well before they are stored: a few days before harvesting, loosen the soil around the roots, and choose a dry day to lift them and lay them on the ground in the sun. Do not be tempted to store them until they are thoroughly dry. Also, first and second early potatoes can be lifted; they don’t store well, so enjoy them straightaway. Although it is getting late for sowing and planting, there are still a few crops that can be planted: • Lettuce, rocket, and a variety of salad leaves – succession sow for an ongoing supply in the autumn. • Fast growing varieties of peas, beetroot, and carrots. • Florence fennel. • Plant out your leeks. Just dib a hole about 150mm/6″ deep and drop the leek into the
22
Deepings
hole. Water it in and the job’s done! You do not need to fill the holes with soil; enough will wash in with watering and rain. • Plant out cabbage, cauliflowers, Brussels, broccoli and kale for autumn and winter cropping, using the space created by lifting onions, garlic, and early potatoes. Other jobs to do: • Poor potato crops are the result of poor nutrition, so try feeding potatoes with a tomato feed. Also check the potato plants and earth-up, if necessary, to prevent the tubers going green from exposure to light. • When climbing beans have reached the top of the canes, pinch out the growing tip. • Strawberries will finish fruiting, so tidy up old foliage and cut off runners or use them to produce new plants. • Earth up brassicas to give them a firm hold in the soil and give them a top-dressing of nitrogenous fertilizer or an organic liquid feed. • Nip off the side shoots of your tomatoes; they appear in the “v” between leaf stems and main stems, and when there are four or five trusses, pinch out the growing tip of the plant to allow the fruit to ripen. Water them with a liquid feed as soon as the first fruits are formed. Likewise for peppers. • Ensure that peas and brassicas are netted to keep off the pigeons. • Plant potatoes ready for Christmas; garden centres usually stock the winter varieties.

Consumer Advice
Burglary Prevention Advice to Avoid Summer Holiday Heartache By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Whether you’ve booked a week or two in the sun or have planned a short family break, don’t forget to add home security and property protection to your checklist. We can all greatly reduce the risk of burglary by taking a few simple security measures to help make our home less attractive to thieves. Before you go on holiday: • Set up automatic timer switches to turn your lights on when it gets dark. • Don’t discuss holiday plans on social media. • Ask a trusted neighbour to watch over your home whilst you’re away. • Ensure all windows and doors, gates, garages, and sheds are locked. • Keep items that could be used to break into your property such as ladders, tools and wheelie bins stored safely away. • Store valuable documents or items in a safe or leave them with a family member, friend, or a bank. • Make sure valuable items such as laptops, games consoles etc., are not on view from the outside. • Make sure you have up-to-date building and contents insurance. While you're away: • Get a relative, friend or neighbour to park on your drive if you have one, open and close the curtains, collect post from the mat and water the garden. • Be mindful of what you post on social media which could identify you as being away on holiday. Prevention is always better than cure, and now is a great time to install or upgrade any CCTV security/ lighting or alarm systems – or even change the locks. Don’t overlook your garden. Thieves will resort to stealing just about anything, from lawn mowers and expensive tools to fish from the pond... and even newly-laid turf! You could: • Secure all gates and sheds and install some sensory outdoor lighting. • Alarm the garage to provide additional security or think about installing garage roller shutter doors. • Flimsy, broken fence panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in some new and improved fencing or panels. • Use a security pen to mark items, like garden furniture, ornaments, or trampolines, with your postcode. • Join a local Neighbourhood Watch Group. Find your nearest group at www.ourwatch.org.uk UL LY Y 2 20 02 22 2 JJ U

WITH ENERGY BILLS ROCKETING, HOW CAN YOU KEEP COSTS DOWN? Making your home warmer has never been more important. With Access4Lofts, it’s never been easier or more affordable either! According to the Energy Saving Trust, as much as twenty-five percent of the heat in your home is lost through your loft or roof space. Not only does that mean you’re getting bigger bills than you should be, you’re also contributing much more than you need to towards greenhouse gases and your carbon footprint. While Access4Lofts specialises in supplying and installing loft ladders, hatches and boarding, we also offer loft insulation that could reduce this heat loss by as much as 20%. That’s going to mean not just a significant saving on your energy bills, but also a big step in the right direction when it comes to your household’s impact on climate change. Access4Lofts is fully committed to providing you with loft insulation that is not only practical
and affordable, but also meets the very highest environmental standards. All insulation installs comply with the National Insulation Association (NIA) recommended standard depths of insulation. So, how much does insulating your loft cost? It could be cheaper than you think! You’ll more than make that money back in what you save on your bills. While exact costs obviously vary from house to house, the typical price for insulating your loft in a detached house is around £395, and you can expect annual savings of around £225 on your heating bills. That’s not just for one year either – that’s year on year for the lifetime of the product. Interested in finding out more about how loft insulation could work in your home? Call now for a FREE quotation on 01733 663207.

Nature
Nature Never Stands Still: Flowers, Moths and a Noisy Cuckoo!
T
[ by David Denman ]
July is the warm reward for making it through the winter - all garden fetes and long walks in the countryside.
here is probably more to see and hear at this time of year than any other. Young animals and birds are particularly noticeable especially the young greyish-brown starling as they explore their environment perching on the most unlikely of objects and trying to match the agility of great tits as they try to hang upside down on hanging nut dispensers.
Watching them in bright summer sunlight reveals the rich red hues of their plumage. Thinking of the recent Platinum Jubilee celebrations and everybody re-telling stories of the Silver Jubilee celebrations I couldn’t help thinking how much the flora and fauna has changed since 1977. There would have been no red kites or little egrets in the seventies. Otters would have been a lot rarer than they are now and the recent limited introductions of beavers would have seemed very far-fetched in 1977. Once again, the underlying wildlife headline is that nature never stands still.
Roadside verges have been transformed into waving displays of ox-eye daisy and areas which have been recently worked have produced excellent displays of red poppies. Within gardens there has been a strong showing from many of our larger, more colourful, butterfly species such as red admirals and small tortoiseshells. There are also many day-flying moths such as Burnet moths which, with their bold black and red markings, could be easily mistaken for a butterfly.
Our summer visitors are back and it is great to hear the clouds of screaming swifts around the houses in Deeping St. James. However, it was another summer visitor that caused much hilarity on a well known Cambridgeshire Nature reserve several weeks ago. I was leading an insect workshop and found a nice, hedge fringed, wild flower pasture to speak to my group.
The best way to separate moths from butterflies is to examine the antennae as butterfly antennae are slender and end in a swollen tip or club whereas the shape of moth antennae are varied and can be narrow, fat or feathered. Aided by better field guides and detailed on-line sites moths have attracted lots of new followers in recent years and there has never been a better time to get into moths. Soaring red kites have been such a familiar site in recent days gliding gracefully over urban gardens.
As soon as I started, I was interrupted immediately by a cuckoo calling from the hedge. It had brought its own loudspeakers and turned them up to 11! My group were distracted then collapsed into laughter as every time I said anything the cuckoo interrupted. The power of the call was amazing. I admitted defeat and moved onto another pasture hoping the bird would not follow! After such an arduous migration from Africa and no doubt a busy breeding season laying eggs into the nests of small birds the last thing it would have wanted was to have its peace disturbed on a perfect summer’s day!

A Look at The Laurels
S
(KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE)
ince 1986, this impressive building in High Street, Market Deeping has been a Rest Home for elderly people. It is over two hundred years old, but was originally a more modest house, owned by a joiner and cabinetmaker in the early 1800s. In 1831, a young doctor, William Page, bought the property and added the stone porch and elaborate frontage with crowned heads – possibly relating to King William IV’s coronation that year. William Page was then in partnership with Dr William Holland, whose house in Church Street has also become a nursing home. Dr Page married Nancy Dixon, the daughter of his neighbours in Caudle House. In 1875, William and Nancy Page built the bay-windowed extension to The Laurels and their initials are carved above the date stone. The Pages also left their mark on St Guthlac’s Church, donating two stained glass windows, one depicting the miracles of healing and the other in memory of Nancy’s parents. Another doctor, Thomas Stafford, lived in The Laurels during the 1880s, and was described as very affable, open-hearted, and generous. After his early death, the house was sold, including stabling, a coach house, hot houses with grape vines, and a riverside garden on the opposite side of the road.
The Laurels as a private house in the 1930s
The Laurels continued as a private residence and is pictured in the 1930s, secluded behind iron railings and mature trees. The owner then was Walter Collison, a retired builder who had worked in Johannesburg, South Africa, when it was still a small township, before the development of the diamond mines. His widow remained in the house after he died in 1935, aged eighty-two. During the Second World War, the building was requisitioned for RAF Quarters. When Mrs Collison sold it in 1947, it was then re-named The Georgians and the room with the bay window was turned into a restaurant. The business catered for functions and parties, seating up to a hundred people. It became a popular venue for dances and dinners held by sports and social clubs from the surrounding area. It holds memories for many local people who held their wedding receptions there, and other family celebrations. In the 1970s, the large stable block in the grounds was converted into a new restaurant, and rooms in the main house were rented out as offices and flats. After the house was sold in 1985, its name was changed back to The Laurels. It was refurbished as a Rest Home and began welcoming residents the following year. The Georgians restaurant remained in the former stables until 2002 and was then redeveloped as a private house. (Alison Lord from Deepings Heritage asks, “If any reader has any ideas about the motor bike’s make or date, please contact Discovering Deepings”.)

Liberty Partnership are delighted to launch
‘The Liberty Lunch’ to celebrate our community champions and those people that go the extra mile
BY RICHARD ASH CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AND DIRECTOR You may know one of those ‘champions’ who always helps where they can or goes that extra mile for a neighbour, a stranger or a friend, and if you do then we would like to hear from you. Our plan is to offer a modest reward of lunch out at a local pub, diner, coffee shop or eatery up to the value of £100. We would ask that this offer is taken up locally to support our fantastic local businesses. We will select a monthly ‘champion’ from any nominations we receive. When contacting us, we would ask that you say who they are, how you feel they have positively contributed towards our community, and provide their contact information, having asked their permission to do so. Please see this as being a good thing, something to celebrate, a way in which we at Liberty Partnership can celebrate our community. Sadly, we will not be able to recognise everyone, which we hope you all understand.

Deeping St James Community Primary School
S
ome of the Year 4 and 5 children at Deeping St. James Community Primary School recently took on the challenge of performing an extract from ‘The Highwayman’ poem by Alfred Noyes. The children learnt the piece and then put together a Choral Speaking interpretation which they performed to four judges from the Peterborough Drama Festival in the school hall. The judges complimented the children on “a very effective tableau and immediately capturing the
We had our Sports Day in the last week of term with a record turn out from parents. We had our usual Olympic theme with an opening ceremony where the children are led out by the house captains, carrying the flag of the represented country.
audience’s attention”. They went on to praise the “energy and attack and it was obvious you were thoroughly engaged and enjoying the experience. This was an excellent interpretation of the poem”. The choir were then presented with the Platinum Jubilee Trophy, as well as certificates of distinction in recognition of their performance. The choir’s headteacher, Mr. Westley said, ‘The festival gave the children an opportunity to celebrate their commitment, creativity, and hard work.” The children at DSJ were involved with the NSPCC Children’s Day, where each class came dressed in a different colour of the rainbow. They were involved in lots of play activities led by staff and Year 6 pupils. They then created a whole school rainbow. It was a fabulous day, and lots of money was raised for the NSPCC.
Many traditional races like egg and spoon, skipping, obstacle, hurdles, relays, sprints, and long distance were undertaken. The weather was just right and the children did a brilliant job, and also encouraged their parents to race each other.
On the last day of term before the Spring Bank Holiday, the school hosted our Jubilee Picnic. Families were invited into school to picnic with their children on the field, and afterwards each class shared a Jubilee related performance. The school band and our musicians all shared their work from the term as well – including a rendition of the Jubilee Song, all capped off with a rendition of the National Anthem! 48

Linchfield Community Primary School!
E
YFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) pupils from Linchfield in Deeping St James visited Market Deeping Fire Station recently and had a great time finding out about the role of a firefighter and how they help to protect the public in emergency situations. In Maths, Year 4 pupils have been calculating with money, working out the total cost, and keeping within a set budget. In Computing, they have been creating their own podcasts, recording their voices, adding sound effects, and then editing them. The Year 5 children have been busy learning about the importance of the rainforest in the growth of the cocoa pods. They really enjoyed a practical chocolate tasting session, rating chocolate from across South America on its subtle variations in taste and smell. They also had a personalised message from two chocolate farmers from Brazil (via Zoom), inviting them to visit the chocolate plantation when they are older. Year 6 pupils have been engrossed in their new guided reading book, “Pig-Heart Boy” by Malorie Blackman. They have debated the pros and cons of
a thirteen-year-old boy receiving the heart of a pig as a heart transplant. The pupils formed a ‘conscience corridor’ in which Sycamore Class argued for the transplant and Chestnut Class argued against. The whole school have enjoyed a range of indoor and outdoor activities to promote mental health awareness including mindful breathing, dot-to-dot drawings, dancing, yoga, chatting and playing outdoor games. Making the most of the lovely weather, the school completed activities on the school field! Claire Cross from The Spinroom conducted fitness sessions and Joni Russell ran yoga sessions. The whole school also took part in The ProKick Challenge, an exciting and free initiative for schools across the country. It is a fully inclusive event, designed to build children’s resilience, confidence, and self-esteem, whilst educating them about global citizenship. Endorsed by the PFA, every ProKick Challenge is hosted by a former professional footballer, and every child receives certificates with positive messages from Premier League and England international superstars which the children loved!

T
he children at William Hildyard took part in a day of fun activities to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The day started with a special worship focusing on the Queen. After this, children spent the day learning about the different decades of the Queen’s reign, from the 1950s to the present day. The school ran a competition to design a hat for the Jubilee. There were over eighty entries for this

competition and the standard was superb - staff found it very difficult to pick winners for each of the categories. The day was rounded off with a celebration on the field, with the hat parade; a performance from the singing club (singing the official Jubilee song “Rise Up and Serve”); and a rendition of the National Anthem with lots of flag waving! A fantastic day was had by all!

Northborough School
W
e were very proud to have been part of the community Jubilee events at Northborough School, naming and training some corgis for their parachute jump off Northborough Church. We were also delighted to share an assembly in school to raise the jubilee flag. One of our on-going projects has been to work with PECT to develop our outdoor area. This year we are focussing on sustainability and finding ways to support our environment. In May, we were lucky enough to win two big awards: the sponsors’ award for our work in school, and the hosts award for the enthusiasm of the children who attended. Well done to Amelie, Ayla, Megan, Emma, Elicia, and Grace who were BRILLIANT – but
well done also to everyone who has contributed at home or school to our eco efforts. We have been as busy with Foundation Class holding their annual Ugly Bug Ball. They enjoy the same feast as ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and release butterflies they have raised in class. Year 1 had a ‘Super Hero Day’, whilst Year 2 had a visit from the ‘Raptor Foundation’ in conjunction with their topic about nocturnal animals. We are looking forward to sports days, residentials and day trips, but also to welcoming the new families who will be joining us in September.
Langtoft Primary School
I
t has been a fabulous time in school, especially with our Platinum Jubilee celebrations. From commemorative plate designing to singing and dancing from every decade during Her Majesty’s reign, by our children – we had it all! Our ‘design and make a crown’ competition was hotly contested with some amazing entries. The weather was kind, and we all enjoyed a Jubilee picnic together. We even had a very special ‘guest’ arrive by car with HRH on their number plate! This September we will be launching our new initiative as a Forest school. This helps and facilitates more than knowledge-gathering; it helps learners develop socially, emotionally, spiritually, physically, and intellectually. It is a long-term programme that supports play, exploration and supported risk taking. The activities help to develop confidence and self-esteem through learner inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural setting. Interested in your child attending Langtoft? We still have spaces. Why not contact the school

by phone or e-mail and book a visit to look around our wonderful school? Year 6 comment. On May 27th, Langtoft Primary School held a jubilee celebration to acknowledge Her Majesty’s 70-year reign. All the students and teachers arrived, for the day, dressed in red, white, and blue- the colours of the Union Jack. In the morning, we learnt about the Queen and the Commonwealth. Every year group learnt a song from a decade in the reign of the Queen 1950-2020 and performed them in front of the whole school in the afternoon. As well as a visit from ‘The Queen’, we also had a whole school photograph taken in our jubilee outfits. Everyone had a great time celebrating the Platinum Jubilee! THE DINOSAURS ARE COMING TO PETERBOROUGH CATHEDRAL Yes, it’s true, animatronic dinosaurs from the Natural History Museum in London are coming to Peterborough Cathedral during the school summer holidays!
F
rom July 18th until September 3rd, 2022, the Cathedral is hosting the touring exhibition “T. rex: The Killer Question”. The display includes roaring and moving animatronic dinosaurs - a three-quarter size T. rex amongst them – as well as dinosaur scenes, a twelve-metre-long static T. rex, and a lifesize T. rex skeleton. Imagine seeing these models in the huge space of the Cathedral! The exhibition tackles the monster mystery: Was T. rex a ferocious hunter or a mere scavenger? Visitors are invited to take a closer look at this dinosaur – its size, the power in its legs, the length of its arms, the sharpness of its teeth and its keen sense of smell. Was it best suited to catching and slaughtering live prey or to stealing carcasses? See the exhibition and make up your own mind. Tickets to see “T. rex: The Killer Question” are on sale now. They are £6 for children (age 3 - 16 years), £8 for adults or £25 for a family (2 adults and up to 3 children or 1 adult and up to 4 children). They are on sale via www.peterborough-cathedral. org.uk/t.rex. For updates and offers related to the exhibition, you can join ‘Team T. rex’ free by e-mailing t.rex@peterborough-cathedral.org.uk.
