Welcome to your August issue...
I
t’s August, which means only one thing for many of our readers – another school year is over, and the children (along with their teachers and ancillary staff) are enjoying their well-earned, sixweek break.
To all the parents reading, I’ll let you decide whether or not that’s a good thing! One small way to help fill those long days this month will be to join the ever-popular “Treasure Hunt” in some of this month’s issues. Our “Events and Gigs Guide” is always full of great ideas too.
As the primary school leavers prepare for their next big step up to their secondary schools and the older students move on to higher education, training, or employment, we wish them every success and happy days to come. Well done parents and carers for having done brilliantly so far – now for the tricky bits! Enjoy every moment!

One of life’s great ironies must be when those people, quite prepared to lie on those faraway beaches at enormous expense and complain about our “rubbish British weather” and then, when global warming delivers us record-breaking days like we’ve just recently been experiencing, are the ones who wear those glum frowns and say, “It’s far too hot!” Climate change means that heat records are now being smashed with increasing frequency, so perhaps those ‘faraway beach’ buddies will in future be content with some toasty staycations! And finally, when I recently discovered that my Debit card had gone through the wash in the pocket of my shorts, my wife wondered if it had simply been a case of ‘money laundering’ – true story! Meanwhile, a golfing friend assured me, “It takes a lot of balls to play the way I do!” Enjoy the read.

he end of June saw the arrival on Market Deeping’s retail scene of a new convenience store. Located at 14 High Street and run by Mr and Mrs Jega, with staff members, David Scott and Reuben, Family Shopper will fulfil a very pressing need when it has been recently reported that over 70% of UK adults now use “discounter stores” on a regular basis. With the country’s rate of inflation heading upwards, there can be no doubt that people are struggling to afford basic food requirements in these very difficult times. It is most encouraging, therefore, that the Family Shopper store will be stocking a wide range of grocery items, all manner of fresh produce and a wealth of “food to go” lines, all competitively priced. On sale are newspapers, confectionery, wine, beer, spirits, greetings cards, vapes, groceries, (including bread, milk, fruit and vegetables) … and so much more. From £1 deals and price-marked packs to monthly special offers and multi-save deals, you’ll find bargains every day at the Family Shopper store. As well as your favourite branded products, you’ll find a fantastic choice of great value “own label” products on offer; from kitchen essentials to fresh produce, direct from the grower, Family Shopper is on your side. Why not pop down today to Family Shopper, your local convenience store? With flexible opening hours, (6am - 12 midnight, 7 days a week), a bank machine close to the centre of town, a friendly independent retailer, and fabulous deals on big brand products, they have everything you need conveniently on your doorstep.

his Holbeach-based firm are establishing a very impressive reputation for the quality of their work and the service they provide, across a wide area of South Lincolnshire and neighbouring counties. This can be clearly confirmed by the huge number of very favourable recommendations from satisfied customers on their website, www.lincolnshireresindrivesltd.co.uk, but especially on their Facebook pages.
Resin driveways are a long-lasting and easy-tomaintain option to transform the front of your home. An eco-friendly alternative, thanks to the non-toxic materials used, and available in a range of colours, a resin driveway is naturally draining, meaning no more puddles from heavy rainfall. They are highly resistant to rust, oil, corrosion, salt, and cracking, and are also the safest option, being resistant to abrasion, slipping, indentation and ignition. The business owner explains how important it is to have a sound foundation, upon which the resin is to be applied. He recommends

Quality Products and Personal Attention to Detail
illarys is a manufacturer and retailer of made-to-measure window blinds, window shutters, curtains, bi-fold doors and awnings. The company was formed in 1971 and sells its products via a network of approximately 1,200 self-employed advisors across Great Britain and Ireland. Our local area is served by Brian Shackleton who has been advising and fitting the wide range of Hillarys products for over seven years, and he covers a thirtymile-wide radius from his Peterborough base. Brian explains the Hillarys ethos as “local people looking after local people”, in that great emphasis is placed on the personal relationships which an advisor strives to create with customers within their specific area. This can be successfully borne out by a testimonial from a very satisfied customer in Bourne, to whom I was speaking recently.
Mrs June Jones has used Hillarys on three separate occasions in the past and has been delighted with the level of customer care and attention to detail, as well as the high quality of the products installed, most recently a number of Venetian blinds throughout her flat in Bourne. “Brian is a very pleasant man who did everything that was asked of him”, she explained, and she would not hesitate to recommend Hillarys to anyone in the future.

The Electrical Installation Condition Report
What’s That All About Then? BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
This month, we’ve been getting lots of enquiries for Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs) on houses that people are in the process of purchasing. This is something we certainly recommend for both buyers and sellers.
If you are a seller, getting a report on
your property shows any potential buyers that there is nothing wrong electrically with your home. Even if this uncovers a concern within your electrical system, and you may not wish to undertake the work, it still puts you in a better position because now you can put a figure against any repairs that need to be done. This makes negotiating much easier, as any work that needs to be done is now quantifiable.
If you are a buyer, getting a report on
a property that you are buying puts your mind at rest as it makes the level of work required transparent so you can go in with your eyes open. It may also help with mortgages or insurance if valuers or surveyors raise any concerns.
Domestic
In both instances, I believe this is highly beneficial, as having a report carried out well before the purchase is completed will help to stop delays later in the process. Many people believe that their electrics will have been checked by their surveyor in the buying process and are often surprised when we advise them that an electrical report is not generally included and must be requested separately by their electrician. If you are buying a property and the owner has an electrical report already, we recommend that you request this and have it reviewed to see what concerns it may have raised. For a complimentary review, e-mail the report to reports@altoelectrical.co.uk, or visit our website www.altoelectrical.co.uk for more information.

Deepings Community Centre Sensory Garden
In January 2020, The Deepings Lions agreed to fundraise for the disability charity, Sense, by nominating them as a beneficiary of their famous Duck Race. Unfortunately, Covid delayed things, but a “virtual” duck race raised £1,500 to be used locally, which was a great start.
T
Words by Liz Noble, Director Deepings Community Trust Ltd.
he Lions and Sense wanted a space to develop a sensory garden and in February 2021, they, with The Deepings Trust (Community Centre) and the local branch of Sense came together to discuss the possibility of using part of the Centre’s garden as a special sensory activity area for members of the community who have impaired hearing and/or sight loss. The clearing began (photo) at the far end of the garden. Fundraising began in earnest and the Lions did a fantastic job of rallying local businesses and charities. Free skips were forthcoming, an activity area was planned, and a mat made of recycled tyres was laid as a foundation, and the project began to evolve. A new fence was erected with the final decorations done by community artist, Emily Bowers and the Deepings Youth Group. (photo) The Deepings Rotary kindly donated and put together a very useful storage seat under the trees, and gradually other equipment arrived, including mellow tubular chimes. Donations continued and some members of the local community constructed the large wheelchair-

Deepings
height boxes for growing the fruit and vegetables and herbs. The quirky bits too began to appear, such as Minions made from old tyres, (photo) whilst old compost bins (photo) became a hedgehog, a mole, and a bee. The official opening (photo) in May 2022 was a great success, with many members of Sense and their families attending to try it all out. It was officially opened by The Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire, Air Vice Marshall Gary Waterfall, CBE, with the help of members of a Sense family. The whole garden is, of course, a private one for use through the Community Centre and has many regular users, as well as on local event days such as the Raft Race. The Sensory Garden, however, was developed for the sole use of vulnerable adults and children, supervised by their carers. There is no charge for its use, but it must be booked in advance through the Centre, to avoid overcrowding and any safeguarding issues. The Centre is open all day, Monday to Friday, and Saturday until 1pm, and Deepings Community Trust members are always happy to show people round the garden. AUGUST 2022

Glinton Horticultural Society Show is Back!
he first Glinton Horticultural Show was held in conjunction with the Red Cross in 1943 in aid of the ‘War Effort’. This was followed by a show every year up to, and including, 2019 except for one when the show was cancelled due to severe drought conditions. Over this period, the show grew to probably the largest in the area with over one thousand entries.
In 2020 and 2021 we unfortunately had to cancel due to the coronavirus pandemic, but we are happy to say that we are back for 2022. The show, (now #77) will be returning to Arthur Mellows Village College in Glinton on Saturday 17th September 2022, opening for viewing from 2.00 to 5.00pm. The show is open to everyone from both near and far, and entries are welcomed for vegetables, fruit, preserves, baking produce, flowers, and handicrafts. There are also children’s classes for age groups up to 4, 5 to 8, 9 to 12 and 13 to 16.
If you are interested in entering, please contact Mrs Lynne Best on 01778 342115 or e-mail lynne.best89@ yahoo.co.uk to receive a show schedule and instructions on how to enter, along with entry forms. The setting up of the show on Friday 16th and the closing down on the Saturday relies on the help of several volunteers, in addition to the committee. If you would like to help to carry boards and move tables and are available from 4pm on the Friday and/or 5pm on the Saturday, please contact Bob Quinn on 01733 252161 or e-mail r372quinn@btinternet.com.
Top Boy Ashton Goes “Nine for Nine” at Swimming Meet Ashton Hunter was recently named “top boy” as Deepings Swimming Club came away from the Lincoln Vulcans/Grantham Swimming Club open meet with an impressive sixty-one medals! The nine-year-old delivered a perfect record: nine swims, nine gold medals. And to top it all, he also broke two Deepings age group club records. The meet, at Grantham Meres Leisure Centre, saw the squad compete against swimmers from Grantham, Lincoln Vulcans, Loughborough, and Louth. Deepings won a total of twenty-three gold, fourteen silver and twenty-four bronze medals. Nineteen swimmers achieved a podium finish as Deepings Swimming Club put up a strong challenge for “top club” honours. Eye-catching performances came from sister and brother Annabel and Oliver Shepherd, who racked up seven golds between them. Five other swimmers won races, namely Eleanor Twinley, Jacob Briers, Bailey A U GUS T 2 022
Jackson-Chilvers, Charlotte Jenkinson and Oliver Clarke. A host of other swimmers across all age groups collected silver and bronze medals, many in new personal best times. Congratulations go to Olivia Laud, Lucy Jenkinson, Olivia King, Emma Affleck, Eydee Chilvers, Isabella Reynolds, Kendra Greenwood-Covell, James Cash, Lewis Tarver, Jack Cradock, and Jack Bell. Also competing, and swimming multiple best times, were Thomas and William Burdock, Hannah Cradock, Isaac Donaldson, Lottie Flatters, Mieke McDonald, Noah Skinner, Lucy Taylor, Clea Treharne and Isobel Vause. Lynn Chapman, Deepings Swimming Club Head Coach, said, “What a day of swimming! As we near the end of the season, it was wonderful to see how much the swimmers have improved.”

Nature
Watercourses, Hedgerows, and a Hot Spell on the Way!
I
[ by David Denman ] [ by David Denman ]
The summer is well and truly here!
t’s not just the colour and movement of the natural world that seems so much more obvious at this time of the year, but the sounds. Buzzing garden hoverflies and bees, calls of fledgling birds, screeching swifts as they hurtle around Deeping’s houses, and the splash of fishing terns as they plunge dive into the Maxey Cut head-first. The high earth flood banks that line many of our rivers provide a wonderful vantage point to watch fishing terns folding their wings and plunging headlong towards their target. Those in-between edge habitats, such as the knee-high grasses between a woodland and a neighbouring path, provide much diversity of life. Brown speckled wood butterflies and pencil-thin damselflies and their larger cousins, the hawker and darter dragonflies, use this habitat but other edge habitats such as those between riverbanks and fields are just as interesting. During a recent ecology survey, I was searching hedges for insects and was struck by just how dangerous being a small insect must be. The insects that were walking along the leaves were having to dodge a waiting predator at every turn. Many residents of the hedge were tiny beetles that had the option to
open their wing cases and fly to another part of the hedge. However, this is a risky option as the aerial escape route is not safe either! Threading themselves through the dark network of leaves and branches was a squadron of predatory flies! An important ecological principle is well illustrated by watercourses and hedgerows. We need what the habitats are composed of, but we also need to focus on how they are used. For instance, a hedge is composed of plants and trees, but it is used during summer by many species for nesting and feeding. Summer hedges are also used at night by badgers and bats as a commuting route to reach their foraging areas. Bats and moths will also use hedges for nocturnal feeding during the summer months. Thinking of colder seasons, the role of the hedge changes, as they provide many species with nocturnal roosting sites and winter-long hibernation areas. As I write, the weather experts are predicting a spell of unrelenting heat. The extra hot weather has huge effects on all species in many ways. As ever, don’t forget to put out water for the birds – mainly for drinking, but also for plumage maintenance as most species will be undertaking their annual moult at this time of year. A ground water bowl would be most appreciated by the hedgehogs too!

By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Summer’s here – and whatever the weather, we Brits love our barbecues – a great excuse for a spot of alfresco dining with family and friends, offering a chance for the fellas to show off their grill skills, the 15:38 ladies to rustle up a tasty summer punch, and the kids to have endless fun. Unfortunately, many barbecuerelated accidents occur in the garden each year, with burns accounting for the most injuries.

However, careful planning and following some simple safety tips will ensure your barbecue is funfilled and not a flaming failure! 1) Keep your barbecues away from flammable garden furniture, such as wooden or plastic chairs. 2) Move your barbecue away from sheds, fences, overhanging branches, and foliage, and never light it in an enclosed space. 3) Never leave a barbecue unattended. 4) Never let children too close to the barbecue. 5) Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues. 6) If it’s a gas barbecue, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder. 7) When choosing a barbecue, ensure it is strong and sturdy, and keep it well-maintained. 8) Disposable barbecues should be left to cool for several hours before being disposed of. And it’s not just barbecues that can cause an outdoor hazard: • Ensure all lanterns and candles with a naked flame are fully extinguished when you leave the garden. • Never leave children unattended in or near inflatable pools or garden ponds. Take care also when visiting other people’s gardens – children can drown in less than 3cm of water. • Clear away unused garden hoses and tools – a dangerous trip hazard. • Protect and secure your home and garden by securely locking gates, sheds, garages, and windows when you are relaxing on those balmy summer evenings. Busting the Eight Top Myths about
Inheritance Tax
ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING Director Will and Probate Services
1
“Inheritance Tax is going to hurt me and my family” – It can, but with the right planning and for the right people, it is possible to pass up to £1 million without paying any Inheritance Tax (and if you are worth more than that, our specialist IHT advisors can help you pass even more). It is all a question of getting the right advice.
2
“My children will have to borrow money to pay the Inheritance Tax on my estate” It is true that, in most cases, Inheritance Tax must be paid before your heirs get the assets, and this can cause problems. However, with the right advice, the problems can be quickly solved and, in some cases, completely avoided. “I will have to pay Inheritance Tax when my spouse dies” This one is simply not true; all transfers between spouses and civil partners are free of Inheritance Tax.
4
“I can give my house away and avoid Inheritance Tax” This is a classic ‘man in the pub’ myth even if you give your house away you will still need to pay IHT if you continue to live in it. There are strategies that work, but this one doesn’t and can make you significantly worse off. “If I put my home in trust it will avoid Inheritance Tax” In the same way as number 4, in most cases this is a myth; giving a property away (including to a trust) is unlikely to have a positive effect on your tax position.
6 7 8
tax due.
“If I own a property jointly there is no Inheritance Tax” No, your share is still part of your estate, and the surviving joint-owner will be liable for any
“My business is exempt from Inheritance Tax” Some are, some aren’t! This is an area where specialist advice is needed, so don’t ever assume that it is.
“Inheritance Tax will be abolished soon” No chance!! The government are getting an increasing amount from Inheritance Tax every year. Whilst times are tight, this tax is here to stay. If you would like to have a serious conversation with a highly qualified advisor about minimising your exposure to Inheritance Tax, then call and book a consultation today on 01778 252301.

The Deepings as a Fishing Resort
A
(KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE)
“
grand little fishing station” was one holiday-maker’s opinion in the 1880s. At that time, the journey by steam train from London to Deeping St James took three hours, and keen anglers from the city regularly stayed at The Bell or The New Inn (now The Stage). Permits cost visitors two shillings and sixpence (12 ½ p) a week, allowing them to fish the River Welland between the watermill on Stamford Road and a boundary stone about five miles downstream towards Crowland. There were two rules to be observed. No pike under twelve inches must be landed, and to ensure anglers could measure them, the permit stated, “This ticket is four inches long”! It was also prohibited to take a dog or gun on the water, to avoid disturbing wildfowl which were trapped commercially further down on the fen. National sporting newspapers gave tempting accounts of the remarkable size and quantity of fish. Large bream swam in the current of the mill pool, while at Market Deeping bridge, chub and dace could be caught. Near the gasworks (Cartmel Court) where the river was around five feet deep, giant pike were found, and Low Locks was the best situation for all-round anglers, with roach, pike, eels, bream, and chub. The roach were an attraction for

visiting fly fishers, but a range of bait, from wasp grubs, minnows, bottle corks and even a spoon, was recommended for other species. One London fisherman described relaxing in the garden of the New Inn on a summer Sunday morning in 1882. Surrounded by borders of sweet peas and hops, with ripening plums and apricots growing against the walls, he amused himself by throwing pellets of bread into the river and watching shoals of fish rise “in comical excitement”. These sporting riches declined over time, due to changes in river management and an increasing number of anglers. During the 1920s and 1930s, cheap excursion trains enabled workers from industrial towns to escape the pollution of steel works and mines. Thousands of fishermen from Sheffield came to fenland waterways, mainly around March and Boston, but some brought their rods to The Deepings. Yorkshire clubs often organised fishing matches here for their members. Though “The Stage” hotel no longer has a flower garden or boats for hire, guests on its riverside terrace can still watch tiny fish in the shallow water. Deeping St James Angling Club now manages our stretch of the river, and visiting fishermen are still a regular sight, sitting along the bank near High Locks.

Now Much More Than Just The Bike!
F
or local lady, Claire Cross, an important and life-changing “light bulb moment” occurred for her, shortly after her daughter, Sophie, was born in 2011. Supported wholeheartedly then, and at every step along the way ever since, by husband, David, Claire embarked on her journey, which today sees her as the owner and driving force behind Spinroom Studios and Deepings Functional Fitness Centre, located on Spalding Road in Deeping St James. Back in 2011, Claire was so keen for her life to return to its pre-childbirth days, and for her body shape and fitness levels to come back, that she followed her instincts, (which she now refers to as a “crazy idea”) and decided to create her own fitness facility in the Deepings. So, in January 2013, based in the creche area in Deeping Leisure Centre, Claire struck out with a handful of spin bikes, some large mirrors, and a portable CD player … and her journey (offering seven spin classes per week) was under way! Claire had meanwhile acquired the necessary qualifications in exercising to music and indoor cycling, and it was not long before the word was out, the number of spin classes was doubled, and larger premises would be needed.
A brief spell on Market Deeping’s Northfield Industrial Estate was followed by a permanent move to Spinroom Studios’ present location on Spalding Road in July 2015. The much larger floor space now enabled Claire to significantly increase her offering to the public. Quite adamant that it is not just a “bog-standard gym”, Claire now identifies her business as a “functional fitness centre”. There is an indoor cycling studio where a total of eleven classes per week are available. Separate from that is the gym floor where a wide range of classes and circuit training sessions are on offer. Furthermore, the studio also hosts a sports massage clinic, a hair studio, an aesthetic salon and a studio for classes in the Korean martial art, Tang Soo Do. Claire has up-skilled since her original qualifications in level 3 personal training, amongst many others allowing her to run every class on the timetable. There is no doubting the popularity of Spinroom Studios, as witnessed by the premises being busy all through the day and well into the evenings, with impressive numbers of individuals and groups returning regularly, either to work on their own or to join in with other like-minded “fitness buddies”. Almost a decade on from Claire and David’s initial venture taking its first tentative steps and seeing how the recent boom in personal fitness activities has brought so many benefits to us all, I’m sure Claire would hardly be calling it a “crazy idea” right now!

Autumn < Metal < Lungs and Large Intestine We have learned all too well over the last two years just how vulnerable our lungs are; they are the first line of defence in protecting our body from nasty illnesses and vital to life itself. But did you know that in Chinese medicine, the lungs go so much deeper than that?
I
f you have been following my articles for the last few months, then you’ll get the general idea by now. But if you are new here, I’ll explain very briefly. In Chinese medicine the body (and its organs) can be broken down into five elements - Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood.
So, what does it look like when our lungs are out of balance? Our skin will become dry or irritated (psoriasis or eczema); we might have a chronic stuffy nose or phlegm in our throat all the time; our hair will become brittle or begin to fall out; and, with our Qi not moving our blood, we will begin to feel run down. Don’t worry… if you have any of this going on, all is not lost!
This month we are going to dive into the metal element, namely the lungs, the large intestine, and the autumn.
Qigong’s very foundation is also based on Chinese medicine, and by coming to one of my classes or seeing me privately, we can work together, gently stretching each of the channels in your body and in turn calming your nervous system down. So why not come along and give it a go?
So, how are the lungs deeper than breath and immunity? Well, in Chinese medicine they are called “the house of Po”, meaning the home of our emotional reactivity. Have you ever been so unimaginably beside yourself with grief or shock that your lungs can’t catch the air right in front of you? Or how about so unbelievably proud that your lungs swell to their maximum capacity? We all have! The very first physical reaction to any emotion occurs right inside our lungs, and so emotions (particularly negative ones) affect our entire energy system if they are left to go unchecked. More important than that, our lungs also govern our “Qi” or energy. Our energy and our blood are seen as the “Yin and Yang” of our body. The blood carrying the Qi, and the Qi powering the blood - one unable to survive without the other.

School News
Another Busy Month at Linchfield Primary School!
L
inchfield Community Primary School in Deeping St James enjoyed wonderful Platinum Jubilee celebrations! They had so many parents and carers enjoying picnics with their children on the school field and the weather was amazing. The May King and Queen with their attendants did a super job of opening the May Dance and all the children and staff enjoyed dancing through the decades! Year 6 children researched facts about Mexico in Geography. Parents were invited into school to view each project and learn new facts about the country. Well done to the children. Year 5 invited ‘History off the Page’, (a teaching organisation whose cross-curriculum enrichment days inspire children through crafts, drama, and role-play to immerse themselves in history) into school so that the pupils could experience life as an Ancient Greek for the day! For Biology, Year 4 wrote some amazing explanation texts on the digestive system and enjoyed sharing them with Year 3 pupils. Years 3 and 4 have taken part in an ancient civilisation topic. They had four workshops focused on Egyptian hieroglyphics, the mummification process, Egyptian style dance and modelling of main monuments linked to different civilisations. Year 1 pupils welcomed their grown-ups into school

W
e welcomed the Kids Country team to lead a “Breakfast Day” for children across the school. The children took part in a range of workshops to help them understand where their food comes from and the importance of healthy eating. It has been an event-packed summer term at Langtoft. Our Year 6s have been heavily involved in rehearsals for their end-of-year production; song and dance to lift all our hearts and lasting memories for our eldest children, as they begin their next adventure in their new schools. In Year 4, they have journeyed through the digestive system, as well as experiencing the magnificence and power of an erupting volcano. All of this was possible through their virtual reality headsets; experiencing events as if they were actually there! This September, we will be launching our new initiative as a ‘Forest School’. We have already started to

for a picnic. The children have learnt how to prepare a range of fruit and vegetables using correct cutting techniques. They designed and made their own sandwiches that they wanted their grown-ups to enjoy and spent time making them. A group of pupils from the school joined children from fifteen other schools across the county on a trip to Hollywood Bowling in Peterborough. They came fifth overall and all children were presented with a medal and certificate. They represented Linchfield perfectly and displayed excellent sportsmanship.
prepare for our new mud kitchen and fire pit to enrich the pupils’ learning in school. Forest school helps and facilitates more than knowledgegathering; it helps learners develop socially, emotionally, spiritually, physically, and intellectually. It is a long-term programme that supports play, exploration and supported risk-taking. The activities help to develop confidence through learner-inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural setting. Interested in your child attending Langtoft? We still have spaces. Why not contact the school by phone or e-mail and book a visit to take a look around our wonderful school? AUGUST 2022

n June, the Reception class went on their school trip to the Sealife Centre, Hunstanton, to support their topic for this term, “Sun, Sea and Afternoon Tea”. Blessed with beautiful warm weather, it was a perfect day at the seaside. We arrived in the morning and began our day by exploring the Sealife Centre and looking at all the tanks. We were really interested in everything, but some of our favourites were the turtle, the alligators, the clownfish, and the baby seals in the seal hospital, all named after cheeses this year! We finished our morning with a talk about rockpools
in the on-site classroom, learning about crabs and starfish, and even got to touch the starfish. We enjoyed a picnic lunch on the grass and then the highlight of the day … an ice cream! In the afternoon, we spent some time on the beach, building sandcastles, balancing rocks, and collecting shells. We even saw a couple of seals in the sea having a look at us. We had a fantastic day out and we were so proud of how our children behaved and how much they remembered when we were back in school. Well done Reception class!

F
rom July 4th to 6th, forty-three excited children from Years 5 and 6 went to Overstrand (near Cromer, North Norfolk) for their long-awaited residential trip, staying at The Pleasaunce Hotel, which is a beautiful Grade 2 listed mansion! On the first day, the children took part in a beach walk, learning about longshore drift and cliff erosion, and finished the day by having great fun looking at the rockpools at West Runton.
Next day, they enjoyed team building exercises in the hotel grounds, developing their problem-solving skills. These really contributed to the afternoon activity of following the Monster Orienteering Trail at Felbrigg Hall (a National Trust estate). The children enhanced their
STEM Week
During the week commencing June 27th, staff and children of William Hildyard school took part in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) week. The week began with an amazing visit from inventor, and You Tube sensation, Colin Furze, who showed some of his amazing inventions, including a remotecontrol wheelie bin and crutches with lights and a phone holder. He even wowed the children with his magnetic shoes, allowing him to hang upside down. Finally, he set the children a design challenge, which led to children across the school designing and making inventions to help a gardener. A U GUS T 2 022
skills in using compasses. In the evening, they listened to an amazing storyteller, who introduced some unusual musical instruments and told folk tales. On the final day, everyone enjoyed a boat trip on the Norfolk Broads, which started at Wroxham, and all the children steered their boat for part of the trip.

Help to Regenerate Your Local Area
Peterborough Community Development Trust Limited (PCD), a Community Benefit Society (CBS), was formed in December 2021. It is governed by The Financial Conduct Authority. Our team of advisors are Resonance Impact Investment Limited, Buckles Solicitors LLP and MacIntyre Hudson LLP.
T
he purpose of PCDT is to secure, develop and hold in perpetuity strategic assets in Peterborough and the surrounding villages. Formed for the benefit of the community, it will act as a responsible investment vehicle for people and organisations to own an actual share of these investments.
Our ambition is to bring about regeneration in the area – enhancing the current local assets and developing new assets when they are needed. The CBS will continually assess the local need and work with local people to bring about the necessary change. We know we can get more done and see more positive benefit if we pool our ambition and efforts in bringing community assets into the ownership of the community itself. We are exploring ways in which we can help add value to a variety of different strategic opportunities. We’re interested in investing in and securing any assets should they become vulnerable or need our help. This could be: • Theatres • Libraries • Community centres • New all-weather pitches and other sports facilities • Renewable energy installations

Our first project is to purchase the iconic New Theatre Peterborough, formerly known as The Broadway Theatre. We are delighted to be working with Landmark Theatres Limited (Selladoor Venues), who are the current operators of the theatre. Our target is to raise £3.5 million to buy the building and meet ancillary costs. We aim to raise the funds by offering withdrawable community shares, apply for Capital Grants and Debt Capital. The Dawe Charitable Trust has already subscribed £50,000 to our Pioneer Share Offer to meet the project’s start-up costs. If you would like to share our ambition, you can become a member of PCDT by applying for our share offer (minimum investment of twenty shares @ £1 per share). Members will have a direct say in how we work and we welcome hands-on involvement from them. If you would like to make a one-off donation, however small, please pay by Bacs transfer to Peterborough Community Development Trust Limited. Sort code: 60-83-01, Account number: 20458564. For further information or to request for a share application form please email us: admin@pcdtrust.org.uk Jane Dawe (Chair), Vijju Churchman (Company Secretary), Jeremy Hargreaves (Director).

Love Singing? The Glebe Singers Want You! The Glebe Singers Community Choir, based in Market Deeping, have just concluded their first year of rehearsals, back together again after Covid stopped them in their tracks in March 2020. Their final two special performances were given, entertaining residents at care homes in both Bourne and Deeping St. James, where they sang a variety of pieces, ranging from “Danny Boy” to “How Shall I Keep From Singing?” As a Community Choir, giving back to the community is important, and these performances provided an excellent opportunity to do just that. The choir is now taking a break for the summer holidays, but will be returning to rehearsing on Wednesday September 7th, and would love to welcome new members into their midst. If you like singing and would like to come along and experience a rehearsal, they will be at The Green School, Market Deeping from September 7th, and for the coming year, members will again be able to join with no subscription fees.

the wide range of locations, domestic and commercial, to which they are summoned (from fast-food outlets, schools, warehouses and offices to community centres, hotels, and sports clubs). This time of the year sees the traditional infestation of wasps
posing problems for many, although Helen insists that, as a ‘bee-friendly company’, Pestforce Peterborough much prefer ‘educating’ their clients about pests to ‘eradicating’ those creatures who just happen to want to share the clients’ space!

Just Selling... It’s What We Do!
M
any estate agents have leapt into property lettings as a way of buoying up their flagging sales departments. It has provided an additional revenue when times would otherwise have been extremely tough. But we have not taken this route. We are sales specialists, not a “jack of all trades”. After all, the lettings procedure is a very different discipline, with its own set of complex regulations. It also requires a different kind of agent, who can deal with maintenance issues, complaining tenants etc. However, as the market once again swings in favour of sales, we hear of several agents who are now redeploying their letting agents into sales, with confusing consequences to say the least!
BY PAUL BRIGGS
We’re glad we stuck to what we know. Our staff are superb at selling property – it’s what we do! We get a buzz out of every sale, which is handled by a dedicated professional who really knows what they’re doing. Despite the busy atmosphere in our office, we continue to provide an enjoyable service to our valued clients which is based on honesty, integrity and proven results. So if you are considering letting as a possible alternative to selling, then choose an agent who handles both. However, if you are determined to sell without compromise and want a friendly dedicated service that will help you achieve this aim at the highest price the market will pay and within a convenient timescale, you know who to call! We look forward to being of service.
