This month sees families facing up to the new academic year. Whether that involves seeing your little ones in their first primary school, your older ones embarking on a new secondary school regime, or your even older ones stepping out into higher education (presenting you with “empty nest syndrome” along the way!) we wish you all the very best for the months and years ahead. You do come through on the other side … believe me!

ven as we enjoy/endure these steamy summer days, there are signs that the cooler, darker and wetter months aren’t too far away. Alongside the leaves changing colour and early morning mists appearing, a key indicator for many these days is hearing who this year’s contestants will be, as the annual Strictly Come Dancing sequin-fest once again sashays onto our screens!

As a lifelong fan and erstwhile competitor in several sports, I thought I’d seen it all – then I saw ‘speed climbing’ at the recent European Championships in Munich - “Spiderman/woman on a rope!” Competitors in pairs race up a fifteen-metre wall in around six to seven seconds, defying gravity, leaving us all gobsmacked along the way.

The following headline, referring to Lincolnshire, recently caught my eye: “The underrated English county that’s a cross between Tuscany and the Sahara.” It highlights Coningsby, already famous for having the world’s largest one-handed clock face, recording Britain’s highest-ever temperature of 40.3C on July 19th. Sahara? Maybe! Tuscany? Not so sure!!! finally: My advice is to always “take life with a pinch of salt”: (then garnish with a slice of lemon and a shot of Tequila)! Bono and The Edge walk into a bar – barman says, “Oh no, not U2 again!” Lisa Gray 07931

Local History

The narrow stone bridge at Deeping St James was also an accident blackspot, as lorries became larger and more frequent. As early as 1939, villagers were protesting about the volume of through-traffic and the need for a bypass. Forty years later, it was announced in Parliament that a threemile-long, single carriageway bypass would be built … but it never happened. By 1990, there was still no by-pass and vibrations from heavy goods vehicles were damaging old buildings, causing noise and congestion. Finally, the present bypass route was agreed, and work started on it in 1997 – exactly one hundred years after the first car arrived.

While motorised vehicles gradually increased on the roads, it took them longer to displace horses for farm work. Early motors were not capable of pulling ploughs or heavy carts or coping with uneven ground as easily as shire horses.

Over the years, there were numerous collisions in the Market Place, between vehicles from the Peterborough direction, and those coming from Spalding or Stamford. Various roundabout layouts were tried, using ovals and circles of different sizes, but accidents continued. One experiment in 1934 was nicknamed “dustbin island” when photographs appeared in local papers, showing a large circle of drum-shaped structures. It was soon abandoned.

The vicar of Deeping St James was not entirely won over either. Reverend Samuel Skene admitted that the motor car had made great strides in a short time but said, “It will never take the place of a good horse!”

One forward-thinking man saw them as the future. Walter Greenfield in Halfleet had continued his father’s business of making farm implements, until bicycles became popular. He adapted his workshop to build and repair those, but by 1904 he held a licence to sell petrol and became a motor mechanic.

T

crossroads and the Market Place. The County Council refused, stating that due to the width of the street, “it would be perfectly absurd to establish a speed limit there.”

he first motor car ever driven through the streets of Deeping arrived in June 1897 and several local people enjoyed the novelty of a ride, before it went on to Bourne. The earliest car owner in the village was a doctor. The local solicitor’s wife declared that cars were an evil invention, so the solicitor continued to use a horse and carriage during her lifetime.

Market Deeping parish councillors were concerned about dangers to pedestrians, and in 1909 they proposed restricting the speed of motor traffic to ten miles an hour between Towngate

French

The following year, a resident of Church Street complained that while he was wheeling his father along in a bath chair, a car dashed past them at twenty-five miles an hour!

SEPTEMBER 2022 5DeepingsSEPTEMBER 2022Deepings Here at Deep-in Aesthetics, we are constantly updating our portfolio of treatments and our latest offering is vitamin B12 injections. This vitamin performs many functions in the body and is a vital nutrient responsible for keeping the nervous system and blood cells healthy. It also assists in releasing energy from foods such as meats, breakfast cereals and eggs. As we age, it becomes harder for the body to absorb vitamin B12 and deficiencies often occur resulting in certain medical conditions. As the body doesn’t make B12 or store it for a long time, injections may be required to supplement it. Vegans are certainly at risk of a low count as they restrict animal products within their diet. Lifestyle factors such as smoking or heavy drinking can also lead to low levels. Additional symptoms of B12 deficiency can include cognitive changes, disturbed vision, and muscle weakness. The effects of the injection vary from person to person, whilst the many benefits include boosting energy levels, helping you to lose weight, and lowering the risk of heart disease. It is also essential for the health of skin, hair, and nails. What’s more, it also alleviates anxiety, slows down memory loss and aids in sleeping patterns. So, what are you waiting for? Qigong (pronounced “Chi-gong”) is based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine which can be broken down into five elements - fire, earth, metal, water, and wood. In my final instalment covering this topic we are going to ‘dive into’ the water element, namely - the kidneys, the bladder, and the winter season.

Have you ever been on the phone, knowing full well that your battery is about to die, but you try to push your luck anyway, only for the sound of the voice on the other end to drop out just as they were about to say something rather important?

ourChinesetraditionalmedicinestandpoint,arebodies’batterypacks!Theyholdsomethingcalledour“Essence”.

The kidneys, from a traditional Chinese medicine standpoint, are our bodies’ battery packs! They hold something called our “Essence”. This is essentially the substance that keeps us alive and well, and all the things that we eat and drink and expose ourselves to (be that physical or emotional) will either take or give to this “Essence”. It may sound a bit far-fetched, but our kidneys play a key role in every process in the body. So, if we push our “battery packs” too far, perhaps working that extra shift or grabbing a sleepy takeaway, the price for such neglect soon starts to show. Signs and symptoms of an imbalance within the kidney are dark circles around the eyes, craving salty foods, hair loss, bad teeth, insomnia, brittle bones, infertility, poor sex drive, chronic back pain, a sore throat, and ear pain… and that’s just to name a few!

Does any of that ring true with you? If so, not all is lost! By coming along to one of my classes or booking me privately, I can help you to restore balance within your body once more and get you feeling powered up again. With each gentle, slow flowing movement, we will stimulate every one of the organs’ channels (meridians) and calm the body, giving it the chance to repair and recover. I teach anyone of any ability, so why not get in touch and give it a try?

John Bateson recently undertook a triathlon raising £2,339 in aid of Pancreatic Cancer UK. John is hoping to take his fundraising total to over £2,500, with additional funds raised on the day of the Deepings Raft Race and donations to his JustGiving page. This triathlon is one of many fundraising activities undertaken by John, having recently raised over £3,000 for Cancer Research UK. Clad in his trademark pink tutu and blonde wig, 6 ft 4 ins John certainly makes a striking figure when out fundraising!

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the friends and family who have supported my triathlon and fundraising,” said John. “I couldn’t have done this without the supporters who helped with the transitions between cycling, swimming, and running, gave invaluable advice and knowledge

We bring you items of interest for your home and community. If there is something you’d like us to cover or you have something and all those who have given so generously. Thanks especially to the Shreeve, Goodson, Denton, and Bateson families”. John would like to thank the organisers of Deepings Raft Race for their support in facilitating his fundraising event.

John’s Pink TuTu Fundraiser for Pancreatic Cancer UK

Pancreatic Cancer UK is a charity close to John’s heart, having lost friends and neighbours to the disease in recent months. Survival rates have improved enormously for most cancers, yet for pancreatic cancer, this is not the case. Pancreatic Cancer UK is dedicated to supporting people with pancreatic cancer now, campaigning, and funding vital research to transform the future. All donations go towards helping them to make the breakthroughs that people with pancreatic cancer so desperately need.

14 SEPTEMBER 2022Deepings

Starting at his home in Colsterworth, John cycled 35km to his childhood home of Market Deeping. He then swam 3km down the River Welland, starting at Deeping Gate, negotiating weeds and a family of swans en route, and finishing at Low Locks. The final leg of the triathlon was a 5km run around Market Deeping, finishing at Deeping St James bridge where he was met by family and friends.

Donations to Pancreatic Cancer UK can still be made through John’s JustGiving www.justgiving.com/fundraising/john-bateson1page:

REGAIN LOST CONFIDENCE WITH THE ‘THREE MINUTE CARROT METHOD’

Olivia qualified for the 200m butterfly and 400m individual medley at the British Summer Championships, which took place at Ponds Forge in Sheffield at the end of July. Competing against the nation’s top club swimmers, she swam personal bests in the heats to make both finals in the 18yrs age group, finishing seventh in the butterfly and 10th in the Olivia400IM.then joined her sister Sadie at English Nationals two weeks later to compete in the 100m butterfly, with Sadie racing the 200m butterfly in the 14yrs age group.

In addition to attending regular social events, Oddfellows members can access financial benefits and welfare support, with a dedicated care helpline and citizens advice team, and a travel club. Anyone wishing to attend an upcoming event, or to receive a local events diary, please contact Virginia on 07711 883 938 or e-mail virginia.moran@oddfellows.co.uk.

Dr Wild explains, “After your three minutes you can decide if you are going to turn around and go home, or if you are going to carry on. By giving yourself permission to leave, it relieves the pressure.”

Deepings Swimming Club sisters, Olivia and Sadie Hunter reached the finals in all four of their races at the British and English Summer Nationals, the pinnacle of club competition, with a series of blistering career-best performances.

Olivia made it three out of three for finals and personal bests, to finish eighth in the final. Sadie ended her season on another high with her first appearance at the English Nationals. A brilliant swim in the final saw her smash her personal best once again to finish fifth.

The technique was suggested to the group by clinical psychologist and author, Dr Jennifer Wild, who was asked for her advice on ways in which people can rebuild social confidence after losing a Virginiapartner.Moran,

To help widowed residents overcome the difficult first step of socialising again after loss, Nene and Welland Oddfellows, a friendship group based in Market Deeping, is inviting visitors along to its events for just three minutes. The unusual offer is based on the ‘Three Minute Carrot Method’, which gives you permission to stop or leave something after three minutes, instead of feeling daunted by staying for an hour.

Oddfellows organises social events for its members

Lynn Chapman, Deepings Swimming Club’s outgoing Head Coach, was delighted with both girls’ performances, commenting, “After coaching so many children to national and international level, it was wonderful to finish my time at Deepings Swimming Club with another trip to the Nationals. I wish the club all the best for the future.”

Any prospective swimmers looking to follow in the footsteps of Olivia and Sadie, or simply wanting to improve their skills and stamina, can come for a free trial at Deepings Swimming Club by e-mailing deepings@swimclubmanager.co.uk.

Olivia and Sadie Swim at the British and English Nationals across the area, from its hall in Market Deeping to lunches in Langtoft and Thorney, and events in Spalding and Bourne. Everything is advertised on social media, in local papers and magazines, and in the windows of the hall on Church Street.

Social Organiser of Nene and Welland Oddfellows, said: “Trying something new can be nervewracking, especially if it’s the first time an individual has really put themselves in a social setting without having their partner by their side.”

With these methods (and working alongside the veterinarian), Carlie can rehabilitate conditions such as hip/elbow dysplasia, ruptured cruciate ligaments and patella luxation, and degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis. Laser therapy is now available to help treat muscular issues, bone fractures, open wounds, orthopaedic and neurological conditions.

As a nation of animal lovers, we are more than happy to care for our four-legged friends, be it feeding, exercising, or maintaining their health and wellbeing. But what about animal physiotherapy?

There’s a very talented young lady in Bourne establishing herself in this very niche field.

Services offered include the use of three machines, (a Long Wave Ultrasound, a Pulse Electro-magnetic field Therapy Machine and a class 3b laser which can treat broken bones and open wounds as well as muscle and joint complaints), along with BSc(Hons) FdSc

Carlie Wood BSc, Dip.A.Physio, IAAT, offers her services as a mobile therapist, so that sessions can be carried out in the comfort of the animal’s home, thus helping to reduce the stress the animal may feel. Carlie qualified with a level 6 diploma and is now qualified in Animal Physiotherapy and is a member of the prestigious International Association of Animal Therapists. She has recently also joined the AHPR (Animal Health Professions’ Register) and has over seventeen years’ experience in animal handling, welfare, behaviour, and rehabilitation.

Carlie is fully insured, canine and human first-aid trained, and, due to a change in circumstances, she now has further availability, to include evenings and weekends if necessary.

Having lost the annual extravaganza to the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, hopes were high for some fabulous, fun-filled frolics, many in fancy dress, on, in and by the side of the water, with the theme of “Back to the 80s”. The creativity of the entrants was clear to see, with Back to the Future, The A Team, Ghostbusters and WWF Wrestling all providing the inspiration for the raft builders. The final total for money raised for local charities is hopefully in line with recent years, when the event has raised between £6,000 and £7,000.

Autumn Wreath Making Workshop

loral Dimensions home deliveries and letterbox flowers became incredibly popular and, on the other side of the lockdowns in 2021, Trish began to teach workshops. With autumn fast approaching, Floral Dimensions are pleased to announce the return of their much-loved wreath making workshops, beginning with the ‘Autumn Wreath Making’ session in October. Not only does a wreath on the front door make a home look much more welcoming, but the process of making them can be great fun! What Trish particularly enjoys about the workshops is seeing how every single person can create something beautiful, and different, even those who don’t deem themselves as ‘creative’. Creating a wreath for your home is a wonderful form of self-expression, and the sense of pride, and satisfaction of having learned a new skill is sure to put a smile on your face. Many previous participants have commented on how therapeutic they have found the workshop. There is no right or wrong way to make a wreath. Trish says that she sees herself as a ‘hands-on advice guru’ – giving help when it is needed but guiding you to make the perfect individual piece for your home.

The two-hour ‘Autumn Wreath Making’ session is to be held at Wittering Parish Hall, at 3pm on Saturday October 8th. For the price of £45 per person, all materials and refreshments are provided. You will get to take your wreath home, meet some new friends, spend time bonding with existing ones, and stay for refreshments and a chit-chat at the end.

The Autumn Wreath Making session is designed to help us find joy in this beautiful season, using items such as rosehips, berries, seed pods, teasels, changing leaves, grasses, and twigs to craft your creation. Perfect as a gift for your loved ones, or yourself, you can stay up to date with all future workshops – including Christmas Wreath Making – by following Floral Dimensions (@floral_dimensions) on Facebook and Instagram. Their website is also regularly updated, full of inspirational images, and their other services, such as weddings, events, and deliveries, can be found there.

The “Mum and Dad Scam”: involves con-artists convincing parents their children are in trouble and need a cash transfer. The scammer will typically begin the conversation with “Hello Mum” or “Hello Dad” and say that they are texting from a new mobile number as their phone was lost or damaged and will go on to ask for money to purchase a new phone or claim that they need money urgently to pay a bill. The criminal will supply their bank details for payment, with some coming back on multiple occasions until the victim realises that they’ve been scammed.

If you are interested in making a positive difference to people and contributing to your community, please consider volunteering with us.

‘Citizens Advice

South Lincolnshire’ is in ABournet‘Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire’ (CASL), we know that the cost-of-living crisis is affecting everyone in our local communities. Fuel debt, the cost of essential items and inflation have pushed the most vulnerable into further hardship. People are needing our help more than ever before…and you can assist us.

3) Never share your account’s activation code (that’s the six-digit code you receive via SMS).

Supermarket Scam: Scammers send out fake Tesco, Asda, and Marks & Spencer vouchers on WhatsApp. The messages look like they have been sent by a thoughtful friend and designed to trick you into clicking on the link to claim the voucher. There are two classic signs that this is a scam: the spelling and grammar mistakes and, if you type in the URL mentioned in the offer, you will see that the page does not exist.

How to protect yourself

4) If you think you’ve been a victim of fraud, contact your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud online at www.actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.

Thanks go to the Len Pick Trust, Bourne United Charities and Bourne Town Council for providing the funding for the outreach.

2) You can report spam messages or block a sender within WhatsApp. Press and hold on the message bubble, select ‘Report’ and then follow the instructions.

Verification Code Scam: If you receive a text message with a six-digit WhatsApp code that you were not expecting, you may be a target of the scam. It’s the kind of code you would need if you were setting up a new account or logging in to your existing account on a new device. If you have not initiated this request, you should see this message as a red flag. It could be a fraudster trying to log in to your account.

We have resumed operating a service at Wake House, North Street, Bourne. The service runs on Mondays and Thursdays (9:30am to 11:30am for drop-ins, and the afternoon for pre-booked appointments) and is being well received by the local community. CASL are currently looking to recruit extra volunteers to help with the running of the outreach and to meet the increased level of demand. Full training is provided, and volunteers are continually supported in a nurturing environment. Volunteering is an excellent way to contribute to local communities and develop new skills. Whether people are looking for a new challenge or want to diversify their skill sets alongside study, CASL has something for you. We have a variety of roles, ranging from those that are client-facing to admin assistants, receptionists, marketing volunteers and fundraising volunteers.

1) If a family member or friend makes an unusual request on WhatsApp, always call the person to confirm their identity.

It’s time to lift onions and potatoes before the arrival of cold damp days. Onions should be kept in the light; you can string them and then hang in a cool frost-free place such as a shed.

Winter lettuces – “Valdor”, “Arctic King” or “Winter Density” are good varieties to choose.

• Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners.

• Onion sets and garlic.

Potatoes, however, should be stored in hessian or paper sacks in a dark, dry, frost-free place, such as a garage or shed.

• Spring greens – seeds can be sown in modules for planting out in October.

September is a good time to plant several crops which are hardy enough to withstand the winter and they will provide a steady supply of fresh leaves through to next spring.

Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms (1in) above the ground.

• Clear the soil of spent crops; leaving them to rot on the soil may spread diseases. You could then rough dig and cover the ground for the winter or you could sow “green manures”, such as field beans, annual rye grass or phacelia. If you have a light soil, they can be left in over winter but those with clay soils benefit from digging them in when you do your autumn/winter dig.

• Spinach.

A few jobs that need doing this month include:

composter as there is plenty of dead or dying material available. If you have one, add any material that isn’t diseased, turn it, water if it is dry and cover to keep warm. Don’t forget to add “brown” materials such as: autumn leaves, cardboard, egg boxes, eggshells, and sweetcorn husks, to name but a few. The proportion of “greens” to “browns” should be 50/50, with no dairy products, meat, fish, or non-degradable materials.

• Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in.

• Prune blackberries when picking is over – cut out all the canes that carried this year’s fruit, leaving new canes unpruned.

Now would be a good time to make or buy a

Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry.

• Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter. Tall growing varieties may need staking against autumn winds.

• Lamb’s lettuce and oriental leaves.

T o help reduce water evaporating in these hot conditions, firstly remove all weeds, as they will compete for moisture, then add a mulch of at least 3 inches depth and do not water during the heat of the day. The best time to water is early in the morning when water will soak into the ground, and if plant foliage gets wet, it will dry off, helping to avoid diseases.

O ne of the pieces of feedback I have had from a customer is that they didn’t realise how involved a rewire would be and how much dust would be created, but rewiring your home is not usually something that can be avoided, because it’s something that is only usually suggested when the installation in your home is in need of replacement.

PUT THINGS AWAY - Alto Electrical always cover things up when we are carrying out any dusty electrical work, but there is a lot of dust created in the process. So even with everything covered up, it is impossible to remove all of the dust sheets without disturbing it and getting it in the air and it will resettle on your surfaces. Need a Rewire?

BY LIMITEDELECTRICALALTOEVERITT,COLEEN

MOVE OUT - I often ask my customers to move out when they are having a rewire; not only are you going to avoid the worst of the dust, but we will be able to get finished much quicker if we’re not having to rewire circuits in stages.

DON’T GO TOO FAR - When we are working on your home, there may be decisions we need you to make. For example, if we can’t access a certain area we would check about going via another route. Sometimes we need to ask questions, like, if we can’t find your stop cock to bond it, we may ask you if you know where it is. You may know that the kitchen used to be in a different room which we could then look in.

To prepare you … you are likely to have holes that will need plastering. Unless you are having the installation surface mounted in trunking, or the walls of the building are hollow there is going to be damage! We always minimise it as much as we can, because we don’t like leaving holes in walls either. We can arrange for the walls to be plastered for you, if required. But don’t worry! Everything is able to be fixed, and once it is decorated, everything will look lovely and fresh, your electrical installation is going to last you between twenty-five and fifty years, and everything will be safe for you and your family. So how can we make this as painless as possible?

WARN THE NEIGHBOURS - Nobody likes conflict between neighbours, but having noisy renovation work can cause problems, especially if they are shift workers. But most people are happy to live with the noise, as long as they know how long it will last. Alto Electrical have a letter template to send to your neighbours that will warn them that the work is going to be carried out, how long it will last, and it will provide them with our contact details, in case they need to discuss anything, such as where we are parked.

“If I put my home in trust it will avoid Inheritance Tax” In the same way as number 4, in most cases this is a myth; giving a property away (including to a trust) is unlikely to have a positive effect on your tax position.

2

“I will have to pay Inheritance Tax when my spouse dies” This one is simply not true; all transfers between spouses and civil partners are free of Inheritance Tax.

“My business is exempt from Inheritance Tax” Some are, some aren’t! This is an area where specialist advice is needed, so don’t ever assume that it is.

“My children will have to borrow money to pay the Inheritance Tax on my estate”

If you would like to have a serious conversation with a highly qualified advisor about minimising your exposure to Inheritance Tax, then call and book a consultation today on 01778 252301. Centre Market Deeping | PE6 8EQ 01778 252301

“If I own a property jointly there is no Inheritance Tax” No, your share is still part of your estate, and the surviving joint-owner will be liable for any tax due.

8

“Inheritance Tax is going to hurt me and my family” – It can, but with the right planning and for the right people, it is possible to pass up to £1 million without paying any Inheritance Tax (and if you are worth more than that, our specialist IHT advisors can help you pass even more). It is all a question of getting the right advice.

“I can give my house away and avoid Inheritance Tax” This is a classic ‘man in the pub’ myth even if you give your house away you will still need to pay IHT if you continue to live in it. There are strategies that work, but this one doesn’t and can make you significantly worse off.

“Inheritance Tax will be abolished soon” No chance!! The government are getting an increasing amount from Inheritance Tax every year. Whilst times are tight, this tax is here to stay.

It is true that, in most cases, Inheritance Tax must be paid before your heirs get the assets, and this can cause problems. However, with the right advice, the problems can be quickly solved and, in some cases, completely avoided.

Suffice to say that this summer has been remarkable!

W hen our andnormalchangedswiftstheirhabitatsleften-masse, five days earlier than normal on August 2nd, that was a sign that something was up. Plants and animals seemed to be trying to complete their summer work earlier, such were the challenging conditions. Hedges and trees with scorch marks, and ponds and ditches drying out almost overnight became common sights. With the daytime a little too hot, most of our visits to the yellow countryside were at the ends of the day. On a wonderful sweltering evening on the Roman Canal with harvesting in the background, a large dog fox patrolled the new stubble some distance from a very large group of geese. Occasionally, a family group of ten geese or so would rise over the bank, just high enough to avoid our hats. As the light levels diminished, two deer crossed the stubble fields, and the odd bat patrolled the hedges along the canal. The next morning was special! Nothing was happening on Maxey Cut, apart from the rising mercury. Then a large ripple and, yes, there was an otter with at least two smaller ones nearby! We walked along with them as they fished and played, and other walkers and their dogs were similarly entranced. As the water levels were low, the large fish that they were hunting could be seen easily. Retiring to the bankside vegetation, the stems of the reeds could be seen being moved and then all was still. What a sight! What will be the effects of the drought on wildlife? It is difficult to provide a blanket answer. What is certain is that if the autumn is also dry, then the focus will be on the many aquatic systems in our region. There have been reports of some shrubs flowering for a second time and others which have decided to shed leaves. Some autumn tints are already showing. What will happen to autumnal nectar sources for insects? Certainly, the annual butterfly bonanza on the buddleia has been and gone with the flower heads being dried all too soon by the hot sun. What should have been a time of the year when most butterflies are on the wing produced very few days when many could be seen. But still, many of the usual sights at this time of the year are still occurring, including house sparrows forming big flocks in hedges surrounding stubble fields, and feeding on spilled grain. There seem to be large groups of most bird species around, with jackdaws and rooks lining roadside verges probing for grubs, looking quite official in their black uniforms!
