Welcome to your December issue...

December is a time for both reflection on what’s gone and anticipation for what’s round the corner of the new year. We can think about what we’ve achieved; those places we’ve visited and new people who may have come into our lives; others who we’ll see no more, but whose memory will remain strong. I prefer to look forward, though, and my new year resolutions are already in the planning stage!

In the meantime, my sincere thanks go out to everyone who has helped us in any way this year, especially the “Discovering” team, for their unstinting efforts to meet deadlines when the pressure mounts, and of course our advertisers and contributors, with their regular features, wonderful advice, and suggestions.

Success for Deepings Swimming Club

Fourteen swimmers represented Deepings S.C. at Swim England Masters National Championships in Sheffield recently, and came away with two bronze medals, a new county record and a host of ‘top ten’ performances from fifty races. Most of the squad were competing in their first National Championship and seized their opportunity on the big stage by combining for sixty-one new ‘personal bests’. Masters swimming is divided into age groups, starting with 18-24-year-olds, and rises in five-year increments, with relays organised by combined ages.

The team’s medals came, firstly, in the women’s 4x100 individual medley relay, where the quartet of Jacqui Crockett, Alice Grant, Bethany Walker and Nicola Lumb finished third in the 160+ yrs age category. James Abbott then clinched bronze in the 25-29 yrs 800m freestyle. Furthermore, Alice Grant, Deepings’ assistant coach, broke the Lincolnshire County record for the 800m freestyle event in the 5559 yrs age group.

“Treecycle Peterborough”: Sign up to help Sue Ryder

Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice is encouraging people to sign up to have their Christmas trees collected and recycled to raise vital funds for families needing their palliative care and bereavement support. After the festivities are over, “Treecycle Peterborough” will be collecting real Christmas trees, direct from people’s front door or driveway, so that they can be chipped into mulch and recycled.

For a donation, people who live in PE1, PE2, PE3, PE4, PE5, PE6, PE7, and PE8 postcodes can have their trees collected between Saturday January 7th and Tuesday 10th. To find out more and book a collection by Tuesday January 3rd 2023, please visit www.sueryder.org/peterboroughtrees.

The cost of living is rising, and energy bills are increasing. It is a difficult time for many in our communities, particularly those who may be vulnerable. If your energy company classes you as vulnerable, they might agree to:

● move your prepayment meter if you struggle to get to it.

● send someone to check your meter regularly.

● send your bills to another person - for example, a family member or carer.

● send you bills in large print or braille.

● give you extra support if you have a power cutfor example, sending someone to check on you and providing hot meals.

To get extra help, you can apply to be added to your electricity network priority services register. Your electricity network is the company that manages your electricity cables. To apply to the priority services register, please contact your energy supplier and ask them to pass on your details to your network operator.

If you have a gas supply, your electricity network will give your details to your gas network operator as well as your energy supplier. This means they can also add you to their priority services registers and offer you extra support.

You’ll normally be able to get priority services if your energy companies class you as “vulnerable”.

You could be classed as “vulnerable” if you:

● are disabled or have a long-term health condition.

● are recovering from an injury.

● have mental health problems.

● don’t speak or read English well.

● have children under five or are pregnant.

● have reached your State Pension age.

If your situation isn’t listed, you might still be able to sign up for priority services for other reasons - for example, if you’re recently bereaved or you’ve returned to living independently after some time in residential care. There may be further support available to you if you receive certain benefits.

Here at Deep-in Aesthetics, Alistair and I like nothing more than getting people to look and feel their best, and to give them the confidence they need to face the world. With the last two years being so hit-and-miss with the Christmas season, it’s lovely to know that this year we can all revert to what we know … lots of Christmas parties and family get-togethers.

From Plants to Potions

(KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE)

This industriallooking building once stood in a field between Godsey Lane and the rear of 35 Church Street, Market Deeping, then the home of the Holland family. It contained five huge copper cylinders, heated by furnaces, so that water in the bottom of each vessel turned into steam and extracted aromatic oils from plant material stacked above. Peppermint and lavender were the main crops used, but oils were obtained from over twenty different plant species with healing properties. Dried medicinal herbs and roots were also prepared in the premises, which included a laboratory and a separate drying room.

The enterprise was set up in the 1830s by Doctor William Holland, and expanded by his son, William, whose pharmaceutical products were of the highest quality, winning prize medals at an international exhibition. He supplied many hospitals and wholesale druggists throughout the country, regularly travelling to London on business.

Mr Holland grew most of the plants which he processed, in fields around Deeping. Large areas

were used for the lavender and peppermint crops, which were harvested each August with the help of local schoolchildren.

The distillery was then kept busy day and night for around six weeks.

He had fields of opium poppies and other toxic plants such as deadly nightshade, hemlock, cannabis, and foxgloves.

Villagers were paid for collecting dandelion roots which had medicinal uses and gathered elderflowers which Mr Holland dried to make skincare products.

He also farmed conventional crops and animals, and at the peak of production in the 1870s, employed about forty labourers, twenty-six boys and two women. Following his death in 1899 at the age of eighty, it was said that a great loss had fallen upon the little town and “He well deserved the title we used to give him – the King of Deeping!”

With no children to inherit his business, known locally as The Still, the buildings and land were sold at auction. By that time, synthetic drugs were taking over from plant extracts. Cultivating medical plants was labour-intensive and new owners had difficulty making the enterprise pay. By 1920, all production ceased, and the distillery stood empty for many years, eventually becoming derelict. While surrounding land was built up with houses, The Still remained as an empty shell, minus several chimneys and part of its roof. Hopes of retaining the iconic building and converting it for community use were finally abandoned in 2006, and it was demolished. The name Still Close is a reminder of its remarkable past, while nearby Rosemary Avenue and Clover Road recall natural remedies created here.

Where Did That Go? 2022

By the time you read this, the tree could well be decorated, and the presents might even be wrapped and winging their way to Santa for delivery on his sleigh.

I can’t believe that the year has slipped by so quickly; it really has gone by in the blink of an eye.

As I write this, I am reflecting on a record year for Will and Probate and a turbulent year for the nation. If I am honest, it feels quite hard to reconcile the two. But it does show that small businesses like mine are the lifeblood of the economy, and, if we can buck the trend and shine light into the doom and gloom, then there is real hope for 2023.

If you read my last column, then you will know all about our mission to deliver peace of mind for all our clients, new and old. When we are facing uncertainty, peace of mind is at a premium, so our plan for next year focusses on delivering to more people than ever before.

It may be a corny thing to say, but “Peace of Mind” is one of the best gifts that you can give over the festive season. If we can help you and yours, we will be more than happy to do so. As ever, we will be closed over Christmas and the

new year, from December 23rd until January 3rd, to give our staff a well-deserved rest.

Keep Fit Leading up to Christmas

December heralds the time when even the most dedicated of us can struggle to maintain our fitness regimes. Often very miserable weather, always lots of eating and drinking, (“getting into the spirit of Christmas” they call it!) and it’s no wonder those normal healthy routines can take a hammering. Plus, how many of us take the easy option and say, “Oh well, it’s only for a few weeks and, once January’s here, I can resolve to get back into shape”?

So, how can we enjoy every minute of the festive season and still keep active and healthy throughout December?

✦ Keep your energy levels up. It’s not just the gym that matters (although of course, Spinroom Studio could still be your “go-to option”!) Wherever possible, choose a walk or use your bike rather than the car. Even just a lunchtime walk will provide health benefits by releasing endorphins and enabling you to savour that extra mince pie or glass of mulled wine that much more!

✦ Keep your calories in check. Just be mindful of your calorie intake throughout December – that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy festive treats and be a little over-indulgent – in fact it’s good to treat yourself. A healthy balance is always the key!

✦ Boost your immune system. Regular exercise is one of the pillars of healthy living. It improves cardiovascular health, lowers blood pressure, helps control body weight, and protects against a variety of diseases. It can contribute to general good health and therefore to a healthy immune system, so increase your chances of not being poorly this Christmas by including some form of exercise throughout December.

✦ Get better sleep. Exercising improves sleep for many people. Specifically, moderate-to-vigorous exercise can increase sleep quality for adults by reducing sleep onset (the time it takes to fall asleep) and decrease the amount of time they lie awake in bed during the night. Additionally, physical activity can help alleviate daytime sleepiness and, for some people, reduce the need for sleep medications.

The most valuable thing in your home is you. You generate an income that supports everything from paying the mortgage/rent and bills, to paying for activities and days out. Without income protection: Paul receives statutory sick pay of £99.35 a week (£1,444 less a month), he tries to reduce his outgoings, and uses his emergency savings to cover his outgoings.

With income protection: Paul starts receiving the benefit from his policy at £1,500 a month, and he manages to keep his savings aside.

MONTH 3

Without income protection: Despite cutting back, Paul faces a large shortfall. He starts relying on credit cards to cover his monthly bills.

With income protection: Paul is still waiting for his surgery; however, all his bills are covered, and he doesn’t need to worry about his finances.

MONTH 4

Without income protection: Paul receives surgery and having used up his savings, takes to selling some of his possessions at the news he will be off work for a further six to eight weeks.

With income protection: Paul has his surgery and starts his recovery. He is able to focus on his recovery for however long is needed but he is expected to return to work in six to eight weeks.

MONTH 5

Without income protection: Paul is recovering well, but things are getting desperate financially. He borrows money from family and friends.

With income protection: In addition to the financial support, his insurance provider is able to offer advice and support throughout his recovery.

MONTH 6

Without income protection: Now recovered, Paul has debts and owes money to friends and family. He makes the decision to downsize to a smaller property, incurring further costs. It’s going to take many years to get back to where he was before.

With income protection: Paul returns to work fully recovered, his savings are still in place, and he is able to return to his lifestyle before the accident.

Stay Merry, Not Miserable in the Run-up to Christmas

‘Tis the season to be jolly – but as we prepare for the season of goodwill, not everyone shares the Christmas spirit. Whether the threat comes from sophisticated seasonal online scammers or opportunist thieves making the most of a security oversight in the home, there are sadly plenty of people intent on making it a miserable, not merry, Christmas for many. Protect yourself from falling victim to online shopping or auction fraud:

• If you’re making a purchase from a website or person you don’t know and trust, carry out some research first. Read reviews or check the seller’s feedback before going ahead.

• Use a payment method that offers buyer protection, such as a credit card, as most major credit card providers will help you get your money back if the item is faulty or damaged, or if it never arrives.

• Make sure you have a strong password for your email. You should also enable two-factor authentication (2FA), where possible, which gives your online account additional protection by double checking that you really are the person you claim to be, when logging in.

At home, seasonal security is essential, even if you are continuing to work from home.

• For opportunist thieves, visible presents under the tree, open car boots full of shopping, while loads are being taken into the house, and even the possibility of an unlocked garage or parcels left behind bins, are rich pickings.

• Equally, flaws in home security are a beacon to thieves – so remember to check your alarm and never leave doors, windows or garages unlocked.

• Keep a light on indoors and outdoors if you are out visiting friends or family.

• It may be an idea to fit some motion detector security lighting.

• Try and arrange for parcels to be delivered to an alternative address instead of them being hidden by the bins.

• If buying bikes and/or electronic equipment for Christmas – mark them with your postcode.

Fire Rating in Downlights

When downlights are installed in your ceiling, a circular hole is cut to be able to sink them flush to the ceiling; this hole compromises the fire rating of the ceiling. Modern fire rated fittings have backs on them to re-establish the fire rating of the ceiling and help stop the spread of fire to the next floor.

Older designs do not have a back to them, so there is nothing to help contain the fire, but it also means that the open back provides no protection to anything that happens to be nearby, such as insulation or wooden joists.

Older fittings may still have halogen lamps in them, which are notorious for getting hot. I have personally removed halogen downlights that have not only caused serious scorching to the wooden joists next to them, but also melted the cable feeding them!

An easy way to tell whether or not your downlights are fire rated is to look at the lamps. If the lamp inside has pins, this is an MR16 lamp. This fitting is very unlikely to be fire rated. If it has “nobbles”, this is a GU10 lamp. This could go either way and you would need to look behind the lap to see if you could see a metal “can”.

There are two ways of fire rating downlights; one is to put fire hoods above the fittings, and the other

is to replace the fittings for fire rated ones. The difference in cost between the two options isn’t actually that much, so it is often more economical to get shiny new fittings. If you wanted to treat yourself, you can get all-in-one fittings, which have additional functions to be able to change their appearance and the type of light they provide.
