Sadly, Paula and I lost our dear mother recently, and I’m sure that anyone having experienced such a loss will know about the feelings of grief and helplessness, but also the warmth which comes from the many memories we have been so lucky to have been left with. Part of her funeral service included the following lines, which I find so comforting:

“Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her Or you can be full of the love you shared.”

other’s Day already! “Life doesn’t come with a manual. It comes with a mother” – an old saying, but a true one! We all need help in finding our way through all the various ups and downs of life, and there, right from day one has been that wonderful (sometimes), smiling (often) and loving (always) lady we are so proud to call “Mum.”Inside Highlights

Another definition of “ironic” came our way last month. Having eventually moved to our “dream home” backing onto a densely wooded area on the edge of town, offering complete privacy, in rumbled the monster machines within three days, to absolutely decimate our “backdrop” – some Welsh disease called “Ash Dai bach” apparently! Good news though … we can now put the leaf-blower on eBay!

And finally …

Open Days to see “The Trade Institute” for Yourself

Do you work in the construction industry or know someone that does?

Over the next few months, Alto Electrical will be hosting regular open days to showcase our new building and the work that we are doing in our new company, “The Trade Institute”. This ‘big-build project’ will provide rentable spaces for tradespeople to work, and we welcome you to come and take a look around. The spaces available are in the form of woodworking workshops; metalworking workshops; prep areas; shot blasting facilities; and painting booths. Additionally, to support the non-hands-on side of working in a trade, there will be office spaces, event spaces and a dedicated learning/teaching installation area.

These spaces have been created to provide support to local traders and to create a close-knit community of businesses. In addition to the spaces, we have partnered up with multiple allies to create an environment that will support both physical and mental health.

This month, I want to update you on the progress of the building. The workshops have been installed and new access points have been created, now that the building has been split into two sections. So, when you come for the open day, you will get to enjoy walking through our new entrance.

If you would like to enquire about our open days and the available workspaces, please call the office and one of the team will be happy to talk to you. We look forward to welcoming you to our new building.

Our open days will be held on the second and the fourth Saturdays of March, April, and May, starting on March 11th and 25th. A light lunch will be provided on each open day.

Institute House, Roman Bank, PE10 9LQ. Special offers for early interest in the workspaces will be available, exclusive to those who attend the open days.

Please note that this will be the only time these offers will be available, so you won’t want to miss out!

Hopefully spring is on its way and the longer daylight hours mean more time to spend at the allotment or on your vegetable patch. Although we may get some warm days it doesn’t necessarily mean that the soil will be warm enough for sowing, so be cautious.

If you have chitted your first early potatoes and the ground is not frozen they can be planted out from mid-March or early April, but it is well worth covering them to protect them from the late frosts. Don’t forget to add a light sprinkling of fertiliser to the trench.

Never planted an asparagus bed? Now is the time. Dig a trench 12 inches deep and add some well-rotted manure. Make a 4-inch ridge at the base and spread the roots of the crown over the ridge, replace the soil, leaving the tips just visible. Water in and add mulch. Don’t forget to leave the asparagus for two years before actually harvesting.

Now is the time to start a runner bean or celery trench, both of which need a rich fertile, moisture retaining soil. The trench should be 60-90cm (2-3ft) wide and 30cms (1ft) deep. Regularly fill them with vegetable peelings, tea bags etc. Each time you add a new layer, cover with soil. Other jobs to do – and there’s plenty of them!

• Lettuces and other salad crops can be sown indoors or outdoors under cloches or in cold frames. Tomato and cucumber seeds can be sown indoors but wait until the end of the month.

• Sow Brussels sprouts, cabbage, sprouting broccoli indoors and to take full advantage of the ripening season sow aubergines, chillies, and peppers indoors.

• Herbs such as rosemary and sage will benefit from a good trim, and chives and mint can be propagated by dividing them and re-planting.

• Plant out onion and shallot sets – last chance to plant garlic.

• Early varieties of carrot, beetroot, spring onions, peas, chard, parsnips, spinach and broad beans can be sown into the open ground but may need to be under cover.

• Last chance for planting bare-rooted fruit trees and bushes.

• Feed and mulch fruit trees – fertilise the base, water in and then cover with well-rotted manure or compost to act as a mulch.

• Remove dead leaves from cabbages and Brussels.

• Don’t forget to feed your over-wintered crops such as onions, kale, spring cabbage – use blood, fish and bone meal, chicken manure or seaweed–based organic fertiliser.

• If you’re into “no-dig” or have raised beds, March continues to be one of the best times of year to top up your beds. Using manure or compost allows for an increase in nutrients. It also increases soil depths where any soil has been lost due to the worms.

• Prepare seed beds by raking over to a fine tilth and add fertiliser.

Are you self-employed?

Are you looking to move home, or shop around for the best mortgage?

There are many different categories of self-employment. For example, you may be a sole trader, a director of a limited company, employed under the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS), employed by an umbrella company, or a contractor on a daily rate. Being self-employed can sometimes feel like you are spinning lots of plates, and when you’re trying to move house or re-mortgage, it can feel like one too many. Here at Path Mortgages, we want to make the process as straightforward as possible. You can simply provide us with your accountant’s details, and we can liaise with them directly to save you from being “the go-between”.

When we have the information and documents we need, we can then simply report back what you need to know:

● How much you can borrow

● What the monthly payment will look like

● How much it costs to buy

If your latest profit/income figures are higher than previous years, most lenders look at the average over the last two years to calculate how much you can borrow. This can be an issue for companies that had lower-than-expected 2020-2021 figures because of Covid or other factors.

We understand this, and have reached out and identified multiple lenders that will instead take your most recent year’s figures. This can mean you can borrow significantly more through a broker than just asking a single bank or building society.

New to being self-employed?

Being a ‘whole of market broker’, we have access to a wide range of lenders that accept selfemployed income after just one year of being in business. If you’re a contractor, depending on your employment history, you may even be able to get a mortgage from your first day in your new role.

Construction Industry Scheme

If you have a CIS contract, you will be able to get a mortgage from just three months of payslips from your new contract. In some cases, depending on your employment history, you could even get a mortgage from the first day of starting a new contract.

If you would like to find out more, please get in contact. We offer flexible appointments to suit your needs. Your business isn’t “9 to 5” and neither are we; call us and we can see what we can do.

Safe Local Trades

Who are they and what do they do?

Founder and owner, Eileen Le Voi explains: Is Safe Local Trades a national company?

No! Having won Peterborough’s ‘Best New Business Idea’ in 2008, the service has, and always will be, exclusively for Peterborough and an approximate 30-mile PE postcode radius, which includes Market Deeping and all surrounding villages. For me, it is all about ‘keeping it local’.

Why did you set up Safe Local Trades?

I felt passionate about providing consumers with a “one-stop shop” where they can access a register of vetted and approved tradespeople, thereby protecting them from rogues and cowboys.

Why would I choose Safe Local Trades over similar national companies?

Imagine Dry Carpet Cleaning

There are several key aspects to Safe Local Trades that makes us unique. Firstly, we always want to ensure that all our members are honest and reputable local tradespeople that do a good job for a fair price. Everyone is interviewed by me in person, followed by a stringent vetting process which includes a DBS check. They must adhere to our Service Charter and are monitored on an ongoing basis, thereby giving customers complete peace of mind.

Secondly, as well as our work with the trades, much effort is placed on safeguarding the more vulnerable people in our communities by working personally and directly with other caring and concerned parties in the 'local' community, such as local authorities, Cambridgeshire Neighbourhood Watch, Cambs Police Crime Prevention, Age UK, The Bobby Scheme, Disability Peterborough, and many more. How do I locate the right tradesperson for my job? Visit our website www.safelocaltrades.com and search for the trade in the drop-down box and then enter your postcode, for instant access to the traders in that particular category, their contact details and the chance to view their profile and reviews. With 65 different trades and over 17,000 reviews, Safe Local Trades has more trusted members in more trades and services across the PE postcode area than any other service, including the national companies.

Visit www.safelocaltrades.com/consumers/testimonials to see what your neighbours think about the service. Any questions? Call 01733 530019. Please follow and like us on our social media channels: Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Local Shops Through the Centuries

(KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE)

Spices and prayer books, gun powder and combs – William Hunt’s shop in Market Deeping provided a large variety of products, over three hundred years ago. He stocked aniseed water, brandy and arsenic, soap and haberdashery, brimstone, candles, shovels and nails, and shackles to fix round horses’ legs to prevent them straying, as well as dried fruit and other foodstuffs. By the time of his death in 1691, he also had a similar shop in Baston. Imported goods, such as tea and tobacco, came to Deeping by river from Boston docks where they were loaded into shallow barges, pulled by horses. Local traders had warehouses on the banks of the River Welland, opposite their shops in the Market Place and High Street. River trade continued until the 1840s and made Market Deeping a prosperous business centre.

Fabrics from London and other bulky products arrived in horse-drawn wagons, while local craftsmen made many other items for sale. The town always had its own boot and shoemakers, blacksmiths, harness-makers, tailors, dressmakers and glovers. Ironmongers often made their own pans and kitchen utensils from tin and copper. They sold tools for carpenters and stocked scythes, sheep shears and other equipment required by farmers.

The India & China Tea Company building had housed a draper’s and grocer’s shop in the 1830s. The proprietor, Thomas Lloyd, kept his coffee and tobacco in a secure warehouse, but resourceful thieves removed tiles from the roof on two occasions and stole valuable commodities. Later, a tailor took over the shop and specialised in making riding trousers “of great ease and comfort to

gentlemen who hunt”.

Deeping’s shops provided almost everything that people needed, attracting custom from the surrounding area and long-distance travellers who stopped at the inns. George Linnell, a local chemist, concocted medicines for farm animals as well as humans. He also pulled out teeth and performed bloodletting, which was thought to improve people’s health. In addition to medicinal products, he sold cigars, house paint, pickles, and fish sauce.

Another versatile local man combined boot-making with taxidermy, and he offered for sale twenty cases of stuffed birds and animals, including an otter which had been captured at West Deeping.

Towards the end of the 19th century, patent medicines and branded goods were being advertised nationally, and replaced many locally made products in the shops. Travellers were using the new railway network and, with no station at Market Deeping, trade from outsiders drastically declined. Shopkeepers now had to compete for local business by stocking some of the new inventions, and have continued to adapt through rapidly changing times.

Special Guest at Langtoft

As part of our love for reading, we have been lucky enough to invite an author into school. Luke Temple has been publishing books since the age of eighteen and he enthused the whole school with his journey into writing and his most recent publications. Later in the week, Luke returned for a book signing session, which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

Our Under 11 girls’ football team has taken part in an Agilitas competition held at The Deepings School. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and look forward to their next event. The girls were invited from a range of year groups across Key

Stage Two, and they performed fantastically as part of a newly formed team.

As part of “Safer Internet Day”, Langtoft took part in a range of online safety activities across the school. Using Project Evolve (content written by a team of experts at the UK Safer Internet Centre) our school continues to raise the profile of online safety throughout the year.

Linchfield Community Primary School

“Number Day 2023”. On February 3rd, pupils and staff took part in a ‘Dress up for Digits Day’, in support for the NSPCC. Several fun-filled maths activities and games replaced the usual Maths lessons. A big thank you to all our children; their parents for some amazing outfits and generous donations; and to our staff for making learning such fun! A fantastic £203.95 was raised, and Number Day 2024 can’t come soon enough!

Special Visitor! February 1st saw Peterborough United F.C.’s Ricky Jade Jones lead an assembly, talking to the children about how his determination and resilience has helped him to achieve his dream of being a professional footballer. Thank you, Ricky and The Posh.

Girls Football Tournament. Linchfield hosted our local cluster girls football tournament on January 27th, the first time a girls tournament had been held at primary school level in Deeping! The girls came 3rd overall, and we are really proud of them all.

Rights Respecting School Award. School Parliament led an amazing whole school assembly about how we will become a successful Rights Respecting School. We have achieved our bronze certificate and are now working towards silver. Well done on all your hard work so far!

Fantastic homework from Year 4! Mia has made a monster with moving body parts and Finley has created Mont Blanc!

Wills

Why do I need a will?

Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate.

If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.

Lasting Powers of Attorney

What are they?

Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.

These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.

Probate

What is it?

When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.

We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.

up your look for Spring!

As we leave behind those dark, winter months ,here at Deep-In Aesthetics we want you to look and feel your best just in time for the sunshine coming out and the social diaries starting to be organised. We are inviting all our clients, old and new, to take advantage of our March promotion combining our two most popular treatments of skin boosters(Seventy Hyal) and anti-wrinkle treatments.

Skin boosters work to replenish and revitalise the skin with hydrating properties and aim to improve the tone, texture, and appearance of the skin, rather than increasing its volume. They are also of a thinner consistency than dermal fillers and work from the inside out, providing patients with a natural and rejuvenated glow. Key benefits include intense hydration, subtle augmentation, and a glowing youthful appearance, whilst also stimulating your own production of collagen and elastin. They can also address the issues relating to skin changes, such as fine lines and wrinkles or sagging in the cheeks, likely to occur during the menopause.

Mamas Wills

Wills for the Next Generation

Who wants to talk about dying at the age of twentyfive? It was certainly something I avoided for a long time. However, it doesn’t have to be as morbid or depressing as you would think. When you have children, writing a will is in fact the most sensible thing you can do.

In January, we launched “Mamas Wills – Wills for the next generation”, with expert advice and support for parents by parents. Our biggest aim is to break the stigma that “wills are for old people”.

So, how does a will actually help a parent of a child?

If you are a regular reader, you would have seen an amazing article written by Danielle Claydon, my fellow ‘Mamas Wills Ambassador’, where she highlighted the importance of appointing a guardian for your children. If you missed it, let me give you a quick run through:

1A guardian is legally responsible for your child if you were to pass away.

2 They make all parental decisions in the best interest of your child or children.

3

By appointing a guardian, you avoid any involvement by Social Services (which includes

an extensive search into your family history) where they select what is ‘best’ for your children (not taking into consideration parental styles or your views). This is by far the most important reason as to why an individual with children should write a will; we don’t shout about it enough.

A lot of people think that, in order to write a will, they need a big posh house, fancy possessions and a bank full of money; this truly is not the case.

Your children are your most prized possession; my daughter is the most important thing in my world. I would rather ensure that my child is safe and has security, over any material possessions (although they would be nice too!)

I could tell you loads of other reasons why it is so important to write your will as a young parent, but I have only so many words. So let me finish by saying this; from one parent to another, please secure your child’s future and write a will.

If you have any additional questions, please contact us; we would be delighted to support you through this.

The awards are based on customer reviews, placed on the site, and a number of Greenwood’s customers had very kind words to say about the service. Tom Chance, Director, commented, “I am delighted that we were recognized by Homecare. co.uk. Our carers are truly fantastic, and it is always so pleasing to see that their hard work is rewarded. Mindfulness: Finding Peace in a Fast-paced World

Despite boundless developments in technology, our brains have remained the same. Is our ‘grey matter’ capable of dealing with how fast our world has become?

First, and foremost, we are animals. We crave safety and security. Constant streams of news can feel like an attack on our bodies. How can we shield ourselves?

Slow. It. Down.

‘Mindfulness’ is the process of appreciating the little things, noticing our senses, and clearing our mind. Certainly, much easier said than done, and I understand it can sound a little wacky.

Some simple things you could try this month…

Mindful eating. Take a small piece of food, perhaps some chocolate or a grape. Eat it slowly, paying attention to how it feels. What is the texture like? Is it sweet or savoury? Is it hot or cold? Does it have an aroma? Does it make a crunching sound?

Breathe. Breathe in deeply through your nose while counting to three. Hold that breath for

three. Then exhale through your mouth for three. Wait for three, then repeat. Try different variations of this – different counts and different speeds. It can help to make a noise on exhaling too. Try a humming sound, or a whooshing of air, no matter how silly it feels!

Notice an animal. For those of us blessed to have pets, stroking an animal can be incredibly soothing. We can notice their breathing patterns, the way their tail moves, or patterns in their fur. For those of us without, there are plenty of birds around as spring approaches. Watch the way they hop, peck at the ground, or soar above us.

Get outside! I walk in nature every day, and relish the opportunity to ignore my phone for a while. Walk without headphones. What can you hear? Touch things! What does the tree’s bark feel like? Stop and literally smell the flowers! I like to walk with ‘a photographer’s eye’, looking for beautiful shots, even if I don’t have my camera on me.

Seeing the sun beaming through the trees on a frosty winter’s morning is enough to make anyone forget the cares of this fast world, if even for a moment.

Take care of yourself.

Springtime … and Everything is on the Move!

Welcome to the spring edition and, for most watchers of wildlife, this is their favourite season.

ost noticeable has been the greening of the field edges and hedge bottoms – wildlife’s ‘trunk roads’, which so many species use to get from home to their feeding areas. Nettles and brambles are busy developing, and the bare brown winter soil is being covered by a bright green carpet of new growth.

I spotted my first hoverfly in our garden on January 30th, whilst a cormorant over Maxey was seen carrying nesting material in early February. Cormorants only started breeding inland in 1981 and by 2012, 89 inland breeding sites were known. Many other signs of spring are in evidence now. My day job brings me into contact with marsh harriers in another county and this most spectacular of reedbed birds is an early nester, with the females already calling above the reedbed where they bred last year. Another species to look out for is the bright yellow brimstone butterfly. This normally appears as a rapidly moving flash of fluorescent yellow in gardens and fields on warmer spring days. Frogs, toads and newts are returning to ponds and there is always the chance of surprising grass snakes and slow worms as they warm up on paths and patios in early spring mornings.

Those of you who are re-visiting your garden for the first time this year will probably have been aware

Mof very small jumping insects, which live under and in plant pots. These tiny creatures are springtails and are at the unfashionable, most primitive, end of the great order of Insects. Not being colourful or spectacular, they will never be as loved as butterflies or dragonflies. They are not even popular amongst entomologists due to their small size and difficulty in identification! However, they are vital to the lives of our common insectivorous birds such as wrens and dunnocks which rely on small insects to keep them going through the winter. These primitive insects don’t have wings, are smaller than 5mm and live in soil and leaf litter. Whilst able to walk perfectly well they have a springing organ under their body, which propels springtails quickly through the air.

A peak in badger casualties normally happens around now. Badger cubs are below ground, but young, breeding-age badgers leave their social groups to explore new areas, bringing them unfortunately into areas they are unfamiliar with, such as roads.

Finally, hares can be more readily seen at this time of the year before crops start growing. Watch the centre of fields (rabbits like field margins) and look out for the large black tipped ears. Don’t be confused by the “boxing”. It can happen between March and the autumn and is not male-on-male violence, but the females telling competing males that they need to try elsewhere! This usually occurs after many hours of chasing and jumping which demonstrates their amazing speed and agility.

Gold for Lottie as Deepings S.C. Claims Eight Medals

Lottie Ava Flatters won Deepings Swimming Club’s sole gold medal at the final weekend of the 2023 Lincolnshire County Championships in Louth with a superb performance in the 200m butterfly. The 10-year-old pushed her club’s total medal tally over the two days to eight medals.

Oliver Clark, in the 10/11 years group, added a silver and two bronzes to the silver he won the previous weekend in Grantham. Deepings boys club captain Jacob Briers claimed his first three medals (a silver and two bronzes) of the championships in the 15 years age group. Finally, James Cash won a silver medal in the 13 years age group.

Sam Peeroo, Deepings Swimming Club Head Coach, praised the efforts of the team over two weekends of hard racing which resulted in one gold, four silver and seven bronze medals from 36 finalists, plus five East Midlands regional qualifying times and 74 personals bests. She said, “Everyone brought their

best performances, with outstanding skills and great determination which resulted in lots of fast times. The club has so much potential, and I’m excited about what the rest of the season will bring.”

Deeping St James School Update.

In January, a budding team of staff, parents, children and friends got to work making the Forest School Area at DSJ safe for all of our children to use. It was a fun day and there was plenty of tree climbing and den building between the hard work! The volunteers managed to completely transform the area. The end result far exceeded anything we could have dreamt of.

The area had been unusable for a while, but now it has; a fenced and safe pond area, a mud kitchen, a fire area , a base camp, bug hotels and balance/ obstacle zone with tyres etc.

Some children have already been able to use the

area for their recent PSHE work but after half term the first class will do a six week block of Forest School.

Children at DSJ will also be able to take part in an after school club after half term.

The PTA have bought; shelters, hammocks, art equipment, tools, ropes and slack lines for the Forest School Sessions.

We still need : Logs for seating , tree stumps, planks to balance on between the tyres, kitchen utensils and wellies. Please get in touch with us through the school office if you can help in anyway. Thank you

Market Deeping Community Primary School

In January, we took part in the RSPB Big Schools Birdwatch. We came to school an hour early and found lots of birds across the field, including blue tits, chaffinches, and a pied wagtail. Our resident robin was also pleased to see us! We were joined by some enthusiastic friends, staff and family members who enjoyed it as much as we did.
