t the time of writing, we’re still very much wrapped up in 2023 and the final throes of the year, with its Christmas parties, Santa being chauffeured around our streets, the carols, and all the end-of-term concerts, all of which make it such a fabulous time of the year.

The American columnist and author, William E. Vaughan declared, “An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.” Which one applies to you I wonder, as 2024 looms into view? All the very best to you all for the year ahead and may it bring peace, good health, and happiness. At this time, the special thoughts of all our family go out to our dear mother who passed away a year ago. Where did 2023 go?

Already with the ‘family organizer’ in place on the kitchen wall, we race through to 2024, looking forwards, with anticipation and much hope, and that’s not just for ‘loadsa’ medals at the Paris Olympics which begin on July 26th. For those of us fortunate enough to have had him as an inspirational History teacher and Deputy Head at Bourne Grammar School (long, long ago), it was sad to hear of Doug Birkbeck’s passing in October … just two months away from his 102nd birthday! And finally: • How sad to have seen that demonstration of turkeys on Christmas Eve, holding up placards which read: “Just Stop Foil!” • A recent study has found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer than the men who mention it. Enjoy the read and may your resolutions last well past the second week of January!

The first part of the evening will be concentrated on developing new recruits and learning two songs. Then, after a break with complimentary refreshments, participants will be welcome to listen to the chorus singing some of its repertoire.

THE JOY OF SINGING: SING 24 Hereward Harmony, the only male barbershop chorus in Peterborough, is looking for new members and is offering a free six-week singing experience. The group was established more than thirty years ago and currently has twenty-five loyal members who enjoy singing four-part close harmony whilst building great friendships. Over the years, Hereward Harmony has sung at both public and private events and as a group has learned and performed a wide variety of popular songs. Newcomers will be coached by Rob Yarnall, the group’s talented music director, who will help you to discover which part your voice is suited to lead, bass, baritone or tenor. You do not need to read music or have previous experience in music to join.

There are many men who would love to sing. Most never get around to it, don’t have the opportunity or maybe are too self-conscious to give it a go. The simple fact is that just about every one can sing, and this course will help you to discover your voice.

Have you sung before?

If it is a few years since you have sung, this course is the perfect way to ease your vocal cords back into action. If you are a regular singer, you may find the course useful to learn different voice parts. The course runs every Thursday from February 29th , 2024-April 4th, 2024, at 7.30pm-9.45pm at Hereward Harmony’s rehearsal centre Orton Wistow Community Centre, Napier Place, Peterborough PE2 6XN.

This tasty recipe is a great way to use up any Christmas leftover meats while staying beautifully on plan in-between Christmas and New Year. It’s nicely spicy, filling and Free! And it’s one of those great standby recipes that’s so versatile that you’ll want to make it over and over again – any week of the year!

INGR EDIENTS:

METHOD:

• low-calorie cooking spray

a large non-stick frying pan with low-calorie cooking 1 Spray spray and place over a medium-high heat. Add the onion

• 1 large onion, roughly chopped

and peppers and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes. Stir in the curry powder, ginger and garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes.

• 3 peppers (any colours), deseeded and thickly sliced • 1 tbsp medium curry powder • 1cm piece of fresh root ginger, peeled and grated

the tomatoes and stock then bring to the boil over a 2 Add high heat and bubble for 5 minutes. Turn the heat to low, stir in the turkey and potatoes and cook for 6-8 minutes.

• 4 garlic cloves, crushed • 400g can chopped tomatoes

to taste, scatter over the coriander and serve hot 3 Season with the yogurt.

• 200ml boiling vegetable stock • 500g leftover cooked lean skinless turkey, visible fat removed, cut into chunks • 400g leftover potatoes, cooked without fat, cut into chunks • chopped fresh coriander plus a few sprigs, to serve • fat-free natural yogurt sprinkled with curry powder, to serve

MFR and Connective Tissue?

ello again, it’s Heidi Marshall. In the last few issues of Discovering magazine, I’ve introduced you to some of the types of bodywork that I have been trained in. This month I’d like to delve into the world of fascia/ connective tissue and MFR. Have you heard of MFR? Myofascial Release? Fascia or connective tissue?

Fascia (or connective tissue) is a term that’s been thrown around for years in the world of bodywork. Back when I first started my massage career, little was known about fascia. It was just explained away as a thin layer of tissue that surrounded all our internal organs and muscles like filler. So much more has been discovered about fascia/connective tissue. We now know that it is its own system in the body, like our nervous system, and it supports you and keeps you stable. Fascia is made up of elastin, collagen and other fibres that are bathed in cellular fluid. It communicates with the brain, is adaptable, and surrounds and creates separation between every muscle, bone, nerve, and organ. It is everywhere and exists as one continuous structure, head to toe with no interruption. There is more connective tissue in your body than anything else. Keeping it hydrated is key to it being able to do its job of support and protection. MFR or Myofascial Release by John F. Barnes

is a gentle technique that involves applying sustained pressure, without lotion or oil, to help reduce or eliminate pain and bring back motion by elongating the fascia. Trauma, accidents, surgery, inflammation, and postural habits can cause fascia to become solidified and shortened. MFR helps bring back hydration to your fascial system so that it can support and allow flexibility and movement.

Fen Ague and Some Unusual Remedies

efore the land in Deeping Fen was completely drained, parts of it flooded every winter, and in summertime the water receded, leaving stagnant pools and decaying vegetation. People who lived or worked in the area were prone to fits of high temperature and shivering, with pains in their limbs, known as ague or fen fever. For centuries, it was thought that fogs or foul air were responsible, but the true cause was identified around 1900 as a type of malaria, spread by mosquitos which bred on rotting aquatic plants during warm weather. Ague was not usually fatal, but those affected had recurring bouts of fever, which over the years weakened their resistance to other diseases. It was a well-known hazard of fenland life, so strangers avoided visiting the area and most sufferers were local farm labourers and their families. Originally, their home-made treatments were based more on superstition than medical science, which itself was primitive. In 1745, a doctor in Lincoln recommended a squashed spider spread on linen and laid on the forehead to reduce fever, or else a live spider could be eaten with bread.

A mixture of beer, gin and acorns was sometimes drunk, or mustard and beer. One woman in Deeping St James sold a cure for ague which consisted of gin containing a pinch of burnt wick from candles. Pumps powered by wind were so ineffective at removing water from the fen, that they were known as “idle bystanders”. In the 19th century, they were replaced by steam pumps which worked more reliably, but seasonal flooding and epidemics of ague still occurred. By that time, opium was being widely used to relieve pain and fevers. It was said that chemists in the fenland towns of Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk sold more of the drug than those in the rest of England put together. Patches of white opium poppies were also cultivated in cottage gardens. Dried residue from the juice of poppies was broken into small pieces and eaten, or powdered opium dissolved in alcohol could be bought in the form of laudanum. There are even accounts of some pubs in the fens, for example at Crowland, adding opium to beer. It was an era when opium was used in many patent medicines, including a cordial for soothing babies to stop them crying. The only proven remedy for malaria or fen fever was called bark powder, otherwise quinine, but few sufferers could afford to consult a doctor. The problem was finally resolved by the 20th century, when diesel engines and then electric pumping stations put an end to serious flooding and mosquitos died out in the fen. 18th century wind pumps in Deeping Fen (illustration from South Holland Heritage)

Oddfellows Donation to the Carers Sitter Service

he Carers Sitter Service has received a £300 donation from a local friendship group. Chairman of the Nene and Welland Oddfellows friendship group, Chris Briance, handed over the cheque in November at the Branch’s annual Table-Top Sale.

Paula Harding, Co-ordinator from The Carers Sitter Service, said, “We are very grateful for the donation. We are a voluntary organisation which aims to give carers time to follow their own interests and hobbies, giving them strength and energy to provide the ongoing support that their dependant relatives/friends need. As a registered charity, we provide a service assisting carers and their families across Stamford, the Deepings, Bourne and their surrounding villages.

Whilst we have been busy indulging in seasonal eating, the natural world has also prioritised eating but from a far more serious standpoint.

ith short day lengths and food a lot harder to find for most animals and birds, effort is the order of the day (or night!)

Next time you see a common egret feeding thigh-deep in water, take a look at its yellow feet, constantly paddling the mud to dislodge aquatic insects. However, there is one very clever trick employed by common egrets on the Maxey Cut. Not only do they paddle furiously, but always seem to do it so that the current (which at times this winter has been very strong) carries dislodged prey morsels so that they flow under their rapier-sharp beak! We had a “too good to be true” view of a feeding otter within a few miles of Deeping St. James recently. Most animals will carry their prey away with them and are very secretive when feeding – but not with this otter. Although the light was going, the otter could be seen diving to the bottom of the watercourse and surfacing quickly to chew intensively on something – exactly what was lost in the gloom, but it wasn’t Christmas toffee! It may have been a small fish or freshwater mussels, but it was happy to do this whilst looking at us and our dog!

Most of us have spent too much time in shopping centre car parks this festive season but car parks have natural history interests at this time of year. Car parks with berry-bearing bushes can attract large groups of one of our most colourful winter visitors, the waxwing (below). And, at nighttime, some car parks can attract large flocks of pied wagtails which roost together on shop ledges overnight. In gardens, the first rays of morning winter sunlight usually reveal several bird species working hard to replenish their energy levels. Flocks of family groups of blue and great tits with occasional long-tailed tits scour tree branches for insects. Working together as a team, they will work methodically so that any insects that are disturbed by one bird will be eaten by one coming on behind. Teamwork also extends into the night as they all roost together to conserve heat especially in nest boxes, more associated with spring and nestlings. Dunnocks appear especially earnest in feeding until dusk. Robins share this quest to find food with the added burden of having to sing throughout the winter months.
