eing a leap year makes 2024 particularly significant, especially if you’re that lady wondering if “he” will ever get round to the customary getting on to his bended knee and slipping that engagement ring on to your finger! Ladies, remember that you can beat him to it on February 29th this year … fellas, watch out!
We’re only just into a new year but we’re already hearing that 2023 was the hottest on record. Thinking of extreme heat brings me neatly on to dear old St Valentine, whose day we celebrate this month. May the happiness resulting from sharing those flowers, perfume, chocolates and so much more (hint, hint, Chris!) with a loved one remain, even when things might get a bit tricky in the future … especially when the snow, and even more heavy rain, comes along to spoil our fun!
Claire x
It was almost a case of “February fill dyke” recently. The trouble was the deluge we witnessed in early January came a month too soon. The dykes were certainly filled … and plenty more, as the unfortunate homeowners in parts of our region will testify, as they battled to prevent the flood waters ruining their new year. Our commiserations in particular go to one of our regular contributors, Waterside Garden Centre near Baston. Their appearance on national television was small consolation for their having suffered disastrous flood damage. And now, just when you thought you’d had your fill of Christmas cracker “crackers”, think again … ● Those wind turbines love loud music – they’re heavy metal fans. ● Never trust a flight of stairs – they’re always up to something. ● My dad used to go round on stilts – as a kid, I really looked up
to him. Have a fun-filled February and enjoy the read!

2023 is Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance’s Busiest Year in History Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance has experienced its busiest year on record, responding to 1,771 missions in the last twelve months. The charity’s crews of pilots, doctors and paramedics responded to 1,044 missions in Lincolnshire, 541 in Nottinghamshire, and the remaining 181 in the surrounding counties.
S
erious medical injuries accounted for 676 missions, followed by 488 road traffic incidents, as well as 158 assaults and 50 sporting or leisure-related injuries. Most patients were between forty and sixty years of age. Critically ill and injured patients were taken to hospitals including Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre, Hull Royal Infirmary, Sheffield Northern General and Lincoln County Hospital. The Christmas and New Year period was particularly busy for the crews. On average, LNAA teams respond to four missions per day, but over these nine days, they received fortythree emergency calls to attend patients needing a range of lifesaving treatments including blood transfusions, anaesthetics, and lifesaving drugs. Between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, crews responded to seventeen incidents, making 2023 the busiest Christmas ever. CEO, Karen Jobling said, “Each year the number of missions we attend increases. Last year we responded to 151 more than in 2022, treating critically ill and injured patients across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.” Caring for a patient does not stop when the doctors and paramedics transfer them to hospital. LNAA’s Aftercare Team continued to grow from strength to strength and the team reached out to 916 patients and/or their families during 2023. From providing support and arranging fifty-eight visits to HQ to being a listening ear, the team helped many patients come to terms with their injuries and cope with the impact of what happened to them. Karen explained, “We start a new year with great optimism. 2024 is the thirtieth anniversary for Lincs &

Notts Air Ambulance and we have ambitious plans for the next twelve months. As a charity, we receive no direct government funding for our operations and we rely on the support of people in every community in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire for the £10million needed to operate twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year. As demand for our service grows, we know that costs will also increase, and we thank everyone who has supported us in whatever way and enabled us to be by the side of patients … day and night.” FE BR U A R Y 2 0 2 4

What better way to say ‘I love you’ than with chocolate?! With this super-easy recipe, you can make your own gorgeous chocolate truffles which you could then pop into a box or jar and tie with a ribbon for a lovely, handmade gift!
Method • Crumble the chocolate muffins (about 125g/4oz) into a large bowl, then stir in the chocolate hazelnut spread. • Add the raisins or sultanas and a few drops of water to create a crumbly mixture. • Squeeze teaspoonfuls of the mixture into balls and then roll the balls in the coloured sugar sprinkles. These will keep for about five days in an airtight container, if kept at room temperature.

TRAVEL VACCINATIONS AND HEALTH ADVICE SERVICE HOW IT WORKS - YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED! 1 WHY MAY I NEED TO BE VACCINATED?
If you’re about to travel outside of the UK, you may need to be vaccinated before you set off for your trip. The childhood vaccination programme in the UK protects you from a number of diseases, but you may need extra vaccinations or antimalarials if you’re planning on visiting certain parts of the world.
2 HOW CAN WE HELP?
Getting vaccinated can help prevent you from getting ill if you’re exposed to diseases which we don’t normally have in the UK. We can help you understand how to keep your risks low while abroad and help you work out which vaccinations and antimalarials you may want to consider depending on things like: • Which regions you’ll be visiting • Your age and general health Some travel vaccinations may be needed several weeks before departure. Ideally you should see us six to eight weeks before travelling, but we may still be able to help if you’re leaving sooner, even days before for travel.

Changing Scenes at High Locks
F
KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE
or over two hundred years, High Locks in Bridge Street, Deeping St James formed part of the Welland Navigation system which enabled goods to be transported by water between Spalding and Stamford. Shallow barges, known as lighters, were linked together by poles and chains to form a line of up to five boats, pulled along the river by a horse on the towpath. A boatman with a long pole guided the vessels towards the lock pen, shown in the photograph when its wooden gates were still in place. Loads of coal, wood and stone passed up-river through Deeping, with grain and other heavy produce heading in the opposite direction. The trade provided work for local boat builders and custom for nearby public houses, one being called The Boat and Horses. The Crown and Anchor pub was conveniently sited almost opposite High Locks, and a mooring post for barges still survives next to High Locks House. The canal between Deeping and Stamford, constructed around 1670, fell out of use in the mid-1800s, and commercial traffic along the river declined. With tolls no longer being collected,
Early 20th century view of High Locks
maintenance of the waterway was neglected, and when High Locks needed repairing in 1897, a jumble sale was held in Market Deeping to finance it. The footbridge was also in “an exceedingly dangerous condition”, despite being a vital link for people in Deeping Gate who used it more frequently than the stone bridge. They had to tread warily for several more years until County Councils on each side of the river agreed who should pay. The stretch of water between High Locks and the stone bridge became the setting for water sports each August. As well as boat races, swimming and diving competitions, there were wild duck hunts, when live ducks were thrown into the river for competitors to try to catch. Winners could keep their ducks, which presumably provided a good meal! The annual event attracted large crowds from a wide area. In 1912, a tug-of-war contest was introduced to the water sports, and was said to have caused much amusement. The sports committee was less amused when one of the competitors deliberately overturned the boat they were sitting in and pitched them all into the river!

Although swimming and boat races are no longer held near High Locks, a more humane version of the duck hunt continues each August. Since 1986, Deepings Lions have organised a Duck Derby for charity, when several thousand plastic ducks float gently towards the stone bridge and whoever has sponsored the first arrival, wins a prize.

Fitness Classes Offered At Spinroom Studio
t’s all about momentum, but what exactly is ‘momentum’? The dictionary helps here with “continuous speed of progress” and “impetus, as of a physical object or course of events”.
Everyone (and that includes YOU!) can create fitness momentum by choosing a class or classes off our timetable that you enjoy and commit to attending every week. Powers of Attorney: Now is the Time to Act!
Money saving expert MARTIN LEWIS says, “In many ways, a Power of Attorney is more important than a Will”. None of us like to think about what would happen if we became unable to manage our own affairs, but it’s important to be aware that our families/friends do not have the automatic right to make decisions on our behalf if, or when, we lose our capacity. Therefore, it is extremely important that you yourself make the decision now as to who you want to appoint to look after your affairs and to legally give them the power BEFORE you lose capacity. Once you’ve lost capacity, it’s too late! The most cost- and time-effective way to do this is by making Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs). There are two types of LPA:
1. Property and Financial Affairs 2. Health and Welfare Here at Double and Megson Solicitors, we are happy to offer advice and help you make your LPAs. Please call us on 01778 341494 today!

Time to Make Bold and Life-affirming Decisions
Advice from NICK ASH, Managing Director W&P Legal
Sitting at my desk writing this months’ article coincides with “Blue Monday” which is supposedly the most depressing day of the year.
T
his is calculated using several factors that include the weather, the amount of time since Christmas, your levels of debt, and the time since you broke your New Year’s resolutions (apparently, the most likely day to do that is January 11th!)
“Blue Monday” is of course completely made up and was first coined in 2005 as part of a press release from a travel company. The press release was attributed to Cliff Arnall who was at the time a tutor at the Centre for Lifelong Learning at Cardiff University. Speaking about the day, Cliff told the ‘Independent’ newspaper in 2018 that it “was never his intention to make the day sound negative, rather to inspire people to take action and make bold life decisions.” So, in the spirit of Cliff (which we fully endorse and embrace), we at W & P Legal have taken up his clarion call and we are encouraging all our staff and clients to make bold and life-affirming decisions.
One of the most life-affirming decisions you can make is not to book a holiday (sorry Cliff, that’s just a short-term fix!) but rather, to get your affairs in order. It might be counter-intuitive, but making a will, sorting out your ‘estate planning’ and protecting your family are all hugely life-affirming. We know this because our clients tell us this almost every day. For most people, the process takes less than an hour and involves a friendly chat with one of our qualified advisors. This is followed up by some draft documents to review and a final signing appointment where we put your plans into being. Now is the time to be bold, make that call – 01778 252301 and finally get your will and ‘estate plan’ in place. P.S. The real “Blue Monday” is, of course, a song by New Order released in March 1983 – it’s a true classic of the synth pop genre, the biggest selling 12” single of all time. If you have your copy in the original, limitededition, die-cut 5¼ inch floppy disc sleeve, then you might want to pop that in your will as it is getting more valuable by the day!

Your Garden
L
et’s hope that your allotment or vegetable patch has had time to dry out so that you can prepare the beds ready for sowing in March.
Warming up the beds will pay dividends by using cloches, straw-based mulches, or plastic sheeting. If you have clay soil, spread a mix of organic matter and grit over the surface and dig it in to open the structure; avoid treading on the soil especially when wet, by laying wooden planks to walk on, or even consider creating raised beds. Make sure that you have got all your seed potatoes by the end of the month and that they are spread out in a seed tray, or in egg boxes, in a light, cool room where they can “chit” (sprout shoots) before being planted out. If the “chits” look pale and spindly, the room is probably too warm or too dark. One vegetable that will be more flavoursome if kept in the dark is forced rhubarb. Once you see the crowns starting to develop, choose a well-established crown, remove any debris or leaves, add a layer of mulch, and then cover with a bucket or large pot without any holes (cover any holes with black tape.) You can increase the heat by mounding compost or manure around the pot. It should be ready to harvest in 7-8 weeks when the stems are 45-50cms long. Other jobs for February include: • Make sure winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons, whose food supply is a little short at this time of year.

• Prune autumn raspberry canes by cutting right down to the ground and then mulch. • Feed and mulch fruit trees and bushes. • If you know where you are planting your brassicas, check the pH and, if needs be, add some lime to bring it up to 6.5 or 7. Also add some extra manure to the potato patch. • The compost heap might benefit from a bit of attention. Rake it through with a fork to aerate it, add water if it seems dry and then re-cover it to keep it warm. • It really is the last time you can winter prune fruit trees as they should still be dormant; any later and if it is mild, they will be starting to move into growth. As they are still dormant, bare-rooted fruit trees can still be planted. • Sow seeds indoors: tomatoes, leeks, lettuce, Brussels, sprouting broccoli, spinach. The main problem at this time of year is a general lack of light, so a cheap solution to prevent leggy, drawn seedlings is to cover a piece of cardboard with aluminium foil and place it to the north side of the seed tray, thus reflecting extra light onto the seeds. • If the weather allows, you can start a composting trench for your runner beans, courgettes or pumpkins. Mark out the area you will be planting and then dig a trench 60cm deep which you can then start to add layers of organic kitchen waste, covering each layer with soil.
Happy digging!

February is the season of love and romance – but it is also a key time for fraudsters aiming to steal your money as well as your heart. ‘Romance fraud’ is one of the top five most reported scams to Action Fraud, and involves people being duped into sending money to criminals who go to great lengths to gain their trust and convince them that they are in a genuine relationship. Now comes the timely reminder to people who may be looking for love to be extra vigilant, taking measures to ensure their ‘perfect match’ is really who they say they are. In the last financial year, the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) received 8,036 reports of romance fraud, with an average loss per victim of £11,500. Men make up 53% of cases and the 65 to 74 age group is the one most likely to be targeted. One of the most high-profile cases is that of Vicky – a victim of Emmanuel Scotts, a convicted, serial romance fraudster who scammed four women out of more than £320,000. In November 2022, Scotts was sentenced to twelve years behind bars. Vicky explains, “They look for your weaknesses and mine is my son and not having his dad around. He made a point of being interested in everything my son did. He praised me constantly on what a great job I was doing, bringing him up on my own, telling me he wanted to take care of me.” Scotts befriended several women on an internet dating site and, after gaining their trust, he persuaded them to “invest” savings and returning small sums of “interest” to extract more money. How to stay safe from romance fraudsters: • Be suspicious of any requests for money from someone you have never met in person, particularly if you have only recently met online. • Be cautious about how much information about yourself you are sharing online and who you are sharing information with. • Speak to your family or friends to get advice. Fraudsters will subtly isolate you for their own purposes. • Profile photos may not be genuine. Performing a reverse image search can find photos that have been taken from somewhere, or someone, else. FE BR U A R Y 2 0 2 4

INVEST IN A WOOD BURNING STOVE AND SAVE MONEY For the savvy homeowner, a wood burning stove isn't just a source of warmth – it's a strategic investment that translates into tangible savings on heating bills.
W
ith rising energy costs, modern stoves offer an economically sound alternative with low fuel consumption, efficiently converting wood into warmth.
At a time where environmental consciousness is paramount, wood burning stoves can provide both low-cost and low-carbon heating. Modern stoves adhere to stringent environmental standards, with significantly lower emissions than older stoves and up to ninety percent less than open fires, contributing to a reduced carbon footprint. To maximise the efficiency and environmental benefits of a wood burning stove, it's crucial for stove users to adopt responsible practices, ensuring the sustainability of this age-old tradition. Properly seasoned wood, optimal burning techniques, and regular maintenance are all key factors. Wood burning stoves can be cosy, cost-effective, and conscientious. Environmental responsibility doesn’t have to sit on the back burner.

As the winter season sets in, it’s crucial to pay extra attention to your furry friend’s joint health. Dogs, like humans, can experience discomfort and stiffness in their joints due to the colder, damper weather. Here are some tips to help care for your dog’s joints during the winter and the benefits of animal physiotherapy in maintaining their health. Firstly, maintain your dog’s exercise routine. Although the weather might be cold, regular, moderate exercise is crucial for joint health. Take shorter but more frequent walks to prevent stiffness. Indoor activities, such as sniffing and searching for kibble or creating obstacle courses, can help keep your dog active. Provide them with a cosy bed to rest on, particularly after outdoor activities. Ensure they are wrapped up warm when out on a walk, to help protect their joints. A warm environment helps in preventing joint stiffness and discomfort. Consider providing joint supplements or adjusting their diet to include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can aid in reducing inflammation and promoting joint health.

Regular vet check-ups are essential, especially during winter. A veterinarian can advise on specific joint care for your dog, prescribe supplements, and detect any joint issues early on. Consider animal physiotherapy as an integral part of joint care for your dog. Carried out by professionals, physiotherapy helps in relieving joint pain, improving mobility, and preventing further issues. Massage, hydrotherapy, and exercises designed for your dog's specific needs can significantly enhance joint health and overall well-being. Personalised plans aid in improving joint flexibility, muscle strength, and contributing to your dog’s comfort and happiness, particularly in the colder months. In conclusion, by maintaining an active routine, providing proper nutrition, regular vet checkups, and considering the benefits of animal physiotherapy, you can significantly contribute to your furry friend's joint health and overall well-being during the colder months.

Nature
Signs That Spring Will Soon Be Upon Us!
H
[ by David Denman ]
Day lengths are increasing, and the promise of spring is in the air.
owever, the floods have been especially dramatic with all water courses looking very full and many over-topping. Large lakes have suddenly occurred in fields, attracting many species around their edges including lapwings, egrets, black headed gulls, and the much larger, lesser and greater black backed gulls. I observed a heron stealthily stalking the edges of a flooded stream, striking with its sharp bill every few minutes, presumably taking displaced fish. Back on damp, but never dry, land we can look forward, and look up, to early display calls from skylarks. Along with barn owls and a range of crow species, skylarks are early nesters and are active in the early months of the year, singing high above their territories. Red kites are a regular feature of our area and I have always been puzzled as to why red kites spend so much time flying, often at low altitude, over areas of housing. Red kites feed on carrion and I have never found an abundance of carrion on Deeping’s streets! So, what are they doing? They are obviously looking hard for food and with endless spirals in the sky, moving quickly out of vision.
I was in Jubilee Park in Deeping St James recently and was startled by a red kite flying lower than normal. It turned sharply and landed, then took off with what looked like half a white loaf which I presume had fallen out of a shopping basket! So, are red kites now foraging for scraps of food like gulls? That’s fine, so long as they don’t develop a fondness for chips! Another ‘spring sign’ is the bright yellow flowering gorse which provides vital early nectar sources for a variety of insects. Mild nights will often give rise to early spring moths. During the wet weather in January, night flying moths were very frequently seen along local country lanes. Don’t forget to look for boxing hares in our fields and the early return of amphibians to garden ponds. Mid-February is the usual time when badgers are born, but this happens deep underground in large setts and the cubs don’t come to the surface until May. If Santa has given you a new bird or bat box, now is the time to put them in place. There is plenty of advice out there on how to do it, either from the RSPB (www.rspb.org.uk) or the Bat Conservation Trust (www.bats.org.uk). However, spring is just around the corner and blue and great tits are already exploring and checking out good nest sites. Time to find the hedgehog food too and keep those bird feeders well-stocked.

Valentine’s Day What’s That All About Then?
W
hen February 14th comes along, we can expect to exchange messages of love through thoughtful cards, flower bouquets, perfume, jewellery, and heart-shaped boxes of chocolate. But why do we celebrate Valentine's Day in the first place, because it hasn’t always been a celebration of love?
Who was St Valentine? At least two men named Valentine could have inspired the tradition. One Valentine was a priest in third century Rome who defied Emperor Claudius II's ban on marriage (he thought it distracted young soldiers), illegally marrying couples in the spirit of love until he was caught and sentenced to death. Another legend suggests that Valentine was killed for attempting to help Christians escape prison in Rome, and that he was the first sender of a “Valentine” message himself while imprisoned, writing a letter signed “From your Valentine.”
In the 1300s, it officially became a holiday associated with love At the end of the 5th century, Roman Pope Gelasius officially declared the date of February 14th “St. Valentine's Day.” It wasn't until the Middle Ages, though, that the holiday became associated with love and romance, a tradition that first started from the common belief in France and England that birds started their mating season on February 14th.
The first Valentine was sent in the 15th century The oldest record of a Valentine being sent was a poem written by a French medieval duke named Charles to his wife in 1415. One of the lines in the poem read, “I am already sick of love, my very gentle Valentine,” penned while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London, aged just twenty-one. People were exchanging cards and handwritten letters to both lovers and friends during the 17th century, but it was in the 1840s that the first Valentine's Day cards were first mass-produced.
However…
Flowers…
Although some historians believe that Valentine's Day commemorates the death of St. Valentine on February 14th, others believe that the holiday has its origins in a Pagan fertility festival called “Lupercalia,” which was celebrated in ancient Rome. Dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and Roman founders Romulus and Remus, the day was celebrated by sacrificing animals and smacking women with animal hides, a practice that was believed to encourage fertility!
The tradition of giving Valentine's Day flowers dates back to the 17th century, but the act of giving flowers then became a popular trend during the Victorian Era, including on Valentine's Day, with red roses symbolizing deep love.

Congratulations go to Joan Maynard from Deeping St James whose beaming smile is the result of her having won the first prize in our Christmas Novelty Treasure Hunt. Joan explained how she had enjoyed an afternoon out in Deeping with her daughters and how she then went off and completed the Treasure Hunt whilst they were doing their shopping!

M
elton Building Society, in collaboration with the June Roper Sporting Trust, is proud to announce their support for Chase Sharpe, a young and ambitious motor racing talent from our local community. Sharpe, approaching his 13th birthday, has been an emerging talent in the racing circuit since his early childhood, marked by his victory in the 2022 UK Kart Series Championship. Chase’s journey in motorsports, fuelled by a passion ignited at the age of six with his first go-karting lesson, has now received a significant boost through a £2,000 grant from the June Roper Sporting Trust. This funding has enabled Chase to acquire professional racing gear, including a specialised fireproof racing suit and gloves, essential for his advancement into car racing. If you’re an ambitious young sportsperson, group, or team, in need of support go to www.themelton.co.uk/community-support/ charitable-foundation to see if you’re eligible for funding.

Wills
Why do I need a will?
Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate. If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.
Lasting Powers of Attorney
Probate What is it?
What are they?
When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.
These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.
We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.
Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.

APV ELECTRICS

All Aspects of Domestic Electrical Work Undertaken
ocal, highly qualified, professional electrician, Tony Vetere (47) is approaching twenty years in the trade, and almost half of that time as a successful, self-employed contractor. Whilst most of his time has been spent on domestic properties built since the 1960s, a recent project on a four-hundred-year-old residence has given him a whole new set of challenges which he has tackled with relish.
A wide range of electrical services is available. These can go from full and partial circuit installations and rewires through to the replacing and upgrading of light fittings, sockets, and switches, to the external installation of light fittings in sheds, garages, outbuildings, and pond surrounds. APV Electrics can also offer boiler, shower, and cooker connections; installation of television boosters, extractor fans, and additional phone outlets; fuse
board upgrades; in addition to testing and fault finding. Most of Tony’s business has been within South Lincolnshire and North Cambridgeshire to include Peterborough, but he is keen to travel further distances if required. Several favourable recommendations from customers highlight his attention to detail, his reliability and communication skills, besides him producing “excellent work at a very fair price.”
