Discovering the Deepings issue 110, August 2024

Page 1

Welcome to your August issue...

This month we celebrate the twentieth anniversary of ‘Discovering Magazines’. In two decades, a staggering total of 709 issues will have been delivered across our wide distribution area of South Lincolnshire and North Cambridgeshire. The ‘Discovering Magazines’ journey began in August 2004 with ‘The Whittlesey Advertiser’ which was to merge with ‘Discover Whittlesey’ and re-launch as ‘Discovering Whittlesea’ in 2009.

September 2011 saw ‘Discovering Bourne’ established by publisher Andy Armstrong. Two years later, “Discovering March” appeared, followed in July 2015 by “Discovering the Deepings”, and “Discovering Wisbech” in May 2018. Andy Armstrong is “still going strong” as Operations Director. In July 2013, I became Sales Director, and a year later, John Schwarz was appointed as Group Editor.

Since then, our happy team of talented designers, sales and accounts personnel and willing contributors have worked tirelessly to produce magazines which serve to inform, advise and entertain; we now publish and distribute over 48,000 magazines a month. Here’s to the future!

With the Olympic Games almost here, the summer of sport continues to cause delight and despair in equal measure. Departing England coach, Gareth Southgate almost managed a knighthood and a silver trophy. Still, it’s cricket season, so farewell to football post-mortems. England’s ladies seem invincible right now and it’s fascinating to see our men handing out the same treatment to the West Indies that we had to endure from them for decades! Sport has a way of doing that … so maybe, just maybe, “football’s coming home” from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America?

In the meantime, there will be plenty more “Discovering Magazines” coming your way as we enter our third decade in business – more ‘Dad one-liners’ like these:

• When she mixed up the herbs with the fish, I told her it was neither the thyme nor the plaice.

• I’m still waiting for my copy of “How to Avoid Online Scams” to arrive. I ordered it six weeks ago!

Baston CE Primary School

Our children were lucky to have a Water Safety Collective Worship given by Billie’s Fins Swim School, from Spalding. Billie talked to the children about having fun whilst staying safe, what they should do if they got into trouble and how to help if they come across someone who was struggling in water.

Baston’s wonderful PTA offered all the teachers a gift for ‘Teacher Appreciation Week’ and our Year 1 teacher decided that the most fun way to spend that would be at the park with an icecream van! It was a glorious day, and we all had a fantastic time celebrating the end of our year together.

On June 7th, the Year 5s went to the Curve Theatre in Leicester to watch a performance of “The Boy at the Back of the Class” by Onjali Q. Raúf. The children had read the book earlier in the school year. It was an amazing performance that captivated us all right from the start. The children were superbly behaved so

William Hildyard Primary School

This has been an extremely busy term. The children have enjoyed many events including Sports Day, a residential trip to Aylmerton in Norfolk (see picture), and a trip out to Lincoln Cathedral to take part in The Church Schools Festival.

The Year 5 and 6 pupils entertained the whole school with a fantastic performance of their end-of-year show, ‘Shakespeare Rocks’. It was a superb concert with lots of great singing, acting and dancing and a great opportunity for our Year 6 pupils to really let their lights shine before they move on to secondary school.

At the end of June, the school received an ungraded inspection from OFSTED. We have now received our final report and are extremely proud to have maintained our status as a “Good” school. This is a real testament to all the hard work put in by all of the children and staff at school – well done everybody!

much so that Lorraine Douglas, the Schools and Partnerships Manager at the Curve Theatre, emailed the school to comment on how impressed she was on how the children engaged with the story and characters on stage. A star audience for a star performance!

Our EYFS children were recently joined by two Community Champions from Tescos. The ladies brought in various different fruit items which the children spent time making into fruit faces whilst discussing healthy foods. After creating the faces, the children were able to eat their way through all the fruit.

Market Deeping Community Primary School

Kicking off some fundraising with a “Pedal for P.E.” event in June. All the teachers took turns riding exercise bikes to see how far they could get throughout the day. Students and parents have been sponsoring them to raise £5,000 for new P.E. equipment, to include new benches; mats; and gymnastics and balance equipment. The staff cycled 471km which is as far as travelling from London to Paris!

Mr Ratchford said, “It was a great way to raise money for much-needed funds to support our sports offer in school. We are very grateful to everyone who donated and to all the staff. Everyone had a great time and really enjoyed the day; It was a real achievement to cycle as far as from London to Paris, ready for the Olympics.”

Donations on their GoFundMe are currently at £17,511 which is fantastic! Donations can still be made in cash, or online at https://gofund.me/ bbd65448.

Launching in September, Sing for Life 2024 are seeking over forty local women to take part in a ten-week pop-up singing project, working towards a fantastic live performance event at The Cresset on November 14th, supporting charity partner Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. What are Skin Boosters!

Skin boosters are injectables that improve skin texture, elasticity, hydration and overall appearance. They can stimulate collagen production, improving fine lines and wrinkles. Treatments involve injecting hyaluronic acid (a soft, gel-like substance), under the skin which then improves the skin’s elasticity and firmness. They are extremely good at improving hydration and can be used on all types of skin areas and skin types. The most common areas to treat are the face, neck, cheek and hands.

What is Profhilo?

Profhilo is an injectable rejuvenation treatment and is one that is loved by celebrities, and, unlike dermal fillers, it is not designed to add volume to the skin or restrict movement in the facial muscles. It is often called the ‘five-point facelift’ as the injections are given in five particular places each side of the face which then all flow together. As we age, the skin naturally loses its firmness, and most people begin to see the effects of hyaluronic acid depletion as they reach their thirties. Profhilo is the perfect treatment for anyone looking to counteract this. It can also be used to improve the appearance of the skin around the neck, décolletage and hands.

To achieve the best, long-lasting results, two sessions of Profhilo are recommended, four weeks apart, and the best results will be visible four weeks after the second treatment.

TREATMENTS WE OFFER

Dermal fillers ✦ Lip fillers ✦ Bunny lines

Downturned corners of the mouth ✦ Gummy smiles

Profhilo (turkey neck) ✦ Hay fever injections

Fat dissolving ✦ Vitamin B12 injections

Anti-wrinkle treatments ✦ Hand rejuvenation

Smokers' lines ✦ Profhilo (five-point face lift)

Vitamin D injections ✦ Under eye treatments

Brow lift ✦ Cheek filler ✦ Excessive sweating

✦ Masseter Botox (teeth grinding) ✦

A maintenance session is then advised once every six months.

What is Seventy Hyal?

Seventy Hyal is also a version of a skin booster and, when choosing between Seventy Hyal and Profhilo, it’s crucial to consider your individual needs and goals. It again is injected into five points on the facial structure so that it can cover and reach the whole of the face. If you prioritise intense hydration and wrinkle reduction, Seventy Hyal is the ideal choice, but if you seek overall skin remodelling and enhanced texture, then Profhilo would be your preferred choice and is able to give a more comprehensive rejuvenation of the skin.

Cost is also a factor worth considering, as Seventy Hyal is a much more competitively priced choice as it’s almost half the price of the Profhilo and it would allow you to revisit the treatment on a more frequent basis.

It’s the Holidays

Time to Make a Plan and Win One

Ilove the summer, and I love my holidays even more; just ask anyone who knows me. July and August are always a really interesting time for our business.

The good news is that less people die in the summer months (it really comes down to the warmer weather), so our probate team all get to enjoy some well-deserved downtime. But, for our consultants and our drafting teams, it is a different story.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to the summer and doing your planning. The first and most prevalent is that “it is sunny outside so nothing bad is going to happen so I can leave any planning for later”. This is a really popular option because the statistics show that two thirds of people don’t have a valid, up-to-date will. However, the most interesting thing for me must be the dozens of people every year who contact us and want their will written urgently as they are just about to fly away on holiday. It is always at short notice, (“we are away next week” is an oftheard refrain) and they are always convinced the plane is going to drop out of the sky!

Now the truth is you are probably at far more risk staying at home than you are taking a flight, but we appreciate that things can go wrong, so we always try to accommodate the nervous flyers that come to us to make their plans.

S u m m e r S a v i n R i s e r R e c

Often, we can turn around documents in less than twenty-four hours if they are really urgent.

But of course, the best advice is to make your plans, (both for holidays and for life) well in advance. Avoid a rush and take the time to understand and get the right plans in place. That’s where we can help best, with professional advice from trained advisors who will help you to make the right decisions for you and your family.

TRAVEL VACCINATIONS AND HEALTH ADVICE SERVICE

1 WHY MAY I NEED TO BE VACCINATED?

If you’re about to travel outside of the UK, you may need to be vaccinated before you set off for your trip. The childhood vaccination programme in the UK protects you from a number of diseases, but you may need extra vaccinations or antimalarials if you’re planning on visiting certain parts of the world.

2 HOW CAN WE HELP?

Getting vaccinated can help prevent you from getting ill if you’re exposed to diseases which we don’t normally have in the UK. We can help you understand how to keep your risks low while abroad and help you work out which vaccinations and antimalarials you may want to consider depending on things like:

• Which regions you’ll be visiting

• What activities you’ll be doing

• Your age and general health

Some travel vaccinations may be needed several weeks before departure. Ideally you should see us six to eight weeks before travelling, but we may still be able to help if you’re leaving sooner, even days before you travel.

3 WHAT VACCINATIONS ARE AVAILABLE?

● Cholera ● Hepatitis A ● Hepatitis B ● Japanese encephalitis ● Meningitis ACWY ● Rabies ● Tick-borne encephalitis

● Typhoid ● Yellow fever ● And many more

TRAVEL VACCINATIONS ALSO AVAILABLE Chicken Pox, Meningitis and MMR

Financial Planning under a Labour Government

In this month’s edition, I want to address some of the key financial planning considerations now that we have a new Labour government. With new policies and potential changes on the horizon, it's important to reassess and adjust your financial plans accordingly.

Tax Change and Your Investments

One of the significant changes the new Labour government might introduce is tax reform, particularly targeting higher earners and capital gains. If you have investments, it's crucial to stay informed about potential changes to Capital Gains Tax and dividend taxation.

To mitigate potential tax hikes, consider using your annual ISA allowance to shield your investments from tax. With a £20,000 annual limit, ISAs are a great place for tax-efficient investing. Additionally, reviewing your investment strategy and considering tax-efficient funds or tax-relief options could be beneficial.

Pension Planning

Labour's approach to pensions might include revisiting the state pension age and reviewing tax-relief on pension contributions, especially for higher earners. Making use of your pension contributions within the current tax-relief framework could be a wise move.

The annual allowance stands at £60,000 or total annual earnings, whichever is lower, and contributing now could lock in valuable tax-relief. You may also wish to consider diversifying your retirement savings, potentially incorporating other investment vehicles to ensure a well-rounded retirement plan.

* A pension cannot typically be accessed until age 55 (57 from April 2028). Investments carry risk.

Property Market

Labour has historically focused on housing reforms, including increased support for first-time buyers and potential changes to property taxes. This could impact both property owners and prospective buyers.

If you’re planning to buy a property, staying informed about any new government schemes or changes to stamp duty is crucial. For existing property owners, particularly those with buy-to-let investments, it’s important to review your portfolio. Potential changes to tax-relief on mortgage interest or rent controls could affect your overall returns.

Inheritance Tax Planning

Labour may also review Inheritance Tax (IHT) policies, possibly tightening rules or adjusting thresholds. Reviewing your estate planning strategies is prudent. Making use of annual gift allowances, setting up trusts, and considering life insurance policies written in trust are effective ways to manage potential IHT liabilities.

Engaging with a financial planner to ensure your estate plan is robust and tax-efficient under potential new regulations is highly recommended.

National Allotment Week (August 12th –18th) celebrates these green spaces and the benefits they have for our health, our wellbeing and the planet! This year’s theme is Celebrating Biodiversity on UK Allotments.

Encouraging Pollinators and Wildlife

To encourage “good” wildlife you could:

• Swap the use of chemicals for natural remedies.

• Build or create different habitats such as insect hotels, hedgehog homes, worm farms and bird boxes.

• If space allows, create a small pond.

• Grow a mix of different plants to provide food, shelter and habitats for wildlife.

• Grow some nectar-rich flowers such as lavender, geraniums, sage and oregano.

Pest and Disease Control

• Keep soil healthy.

• Rotate crops.

• Never compost infected crops.

• Use natural remedies to tackle pests –(plenty of ides to be found online).

Companion Planting

• Varying your planting, whether vegetables, fruit or flowers, which helps prevent the build-up of soil diseases.

Jobs for August include:

• Potted strawberry runners can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot where you have not grown them for at least three years.

• Cut to the ground all summer fruiting raspberry canes that have borne fruit this year and tie in the new green canes that will produce next year’s fruit.

• Outdoor tomatoes should have their growth stopped by the middle of the month – nip out the leading growing shoot just above the highest truss. Continue pinching out and do not forget to provide support for the plants as they become more heavily laden – also for cucumbers, peppers and even fruit trees.

• Keep earthing up potatoes to prevent the tubers being exposed.

• Dig over any spaces that have been left from harvesting crops, where you could grow green manure such as clover or vetch.

• The planting of vegetables and flowers/plants together that will be beneficial for the others’ growth. It may be that one will deter certain pests that will likely eat the leaves of the other. They may help with pollination and to fight disease. Some will help to attract pollinators.

• Some ideas: Mint (deters pests with its strong aroma), Nasturtiums (deter blackfly, Cabbage white butterfly and other pests), Allium family (deter carrot fly and pests due to their pungent smell) and radishes (deter pests and aphids).

Soil Health

Create a fertile, biologically active soil by:

• Adding well-rotted natural materials, such as homemade compost.

• Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes as this will encourage growth lower down.

• As space becomes available, you can plant overwintering crops such as Brussels sprouts, spring cabbage and winter cauliflowers. Cabbage seeds can be planted in a temporary bed or in pots or modules – cover them with nets to keep off the birds and caterpillars.

• For harvesting in the autumn and beyond, you could sow lettuce (keep out of the glare of direct sun), rocket, spring onion, radish plus winter salads, including mibuna, mizuna, mustard leaf and lamb’s lettuce.

Now, let’s hope for some summer sunshine!

The Wise Woman of Deeping

Two hundred years ago, Lucy Barber’s house in Towngate East was a magnet for people who believed that her fortunetelling skills would solve their problems. Carriers’ carts from Stamford regularly brought two or three visitors at a time, from as far away as Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire.

Her speciality was helping to recover money or personal items which had been lost or stolen. She predicted where they could be found, and became known as a “wise woman” for her insights, which customers paid money to hear. Sceptics thought she took advantage of gullible people, and in November 1822 she appeared before magistrates at Bourne, charged with extorting money under pretence of foretelling future events.

James Odell, a hat maker in Market Deeping was puzzled why his business seemed to be losing money, even though trade had not declined. He regularly attended local markets, leaving his wife Mary in charge of the shop, and discovered a letter addressed to her from Lucy Barber, referring to payments for consultations. He learned that Mrs Barber had predicted he would be dead within twelve months, when his wife would soon find a new husband! He obtained a warrant for the wise woman’s arrest.

Mrs Barber was convicted, but freed on condition that she paid court expenses and promised not to offend again.

After the Stamford Mercury publicised her downfall with the aim of discrediting her fortune-telling,

she visited their office the next day to deny she had ever claimed to be a wise woman. She was clearly a strong character, aged about forty, who they described as “a well-dressing, good-looking woman”. Her husband was a carpenter and joiner, from a long-established Deeping family.

Mr Odell did not die during the following year. In 1825 he was an insolvent debtor in gaol at Lincoln Castle, while distressed people continued to congregate at Lucy Barber’s home. She seems to have had a good understanding of human nature which enabled her to predict likely outcomes, without needing supernatural powers - but one of her near neighbours was credited with foretelling his own death.

Robert Wade, an elderly man, ordered his own coffin to be made and asked for it to be ready by Sunday, 24th June 1827. While drinking with friends a few days earlier, he said he did not expect to live beyond that date, and after eating his breakfast on the Sunday, he duly died in his chair. An inquest recorded the cause as a Visitation of God.

Lucy Barber remained in Towngate East until her death at the age of seventy-five in 1853. Whether she had retired from fortune-telling is not clear, but an obituary described her as well-known as the wise woman of Deeping, so her reputation lived on.

Ensure that IT Security is High on Your Holiday Check List

Holiday time is here at last! Maybe a ‘staycation’ or an overseas trip is on the cards? But how do you look after those devices like laptops and PCs that will most likely be staying at home?

Home insurance and/or travel insurance will cover most cases of theft or accidental damage (be sure to check your policy) but it's still a good practice to take a few simple steps to make sure your devices are as safe as they can be.

• Backup your devices. It’s so simple and it should be something you do regularly anyway. Make it a priority to get everything backed up before you leave. Accidents happen and it’s easy to lose all your important data with just the slip of a hand. Don't just back up to the cloud; consider having a backup to a separate hard drive.

• Update your software. Making sure you have up-to-date security software is paramount!

• Secure your devices. Use a PIN, pattern lock or 2-factor authentication. Don’t forget to add security authentication to your laptops and PCs and please think carefully about any passwords you are using.

• Be wary of which Wi-Fi you connect to. It's tempting to connect to any free Wi-Fi when you’re away and save using up your valuable data allowance but really think carefully before connecting to unsecured public Wi-Fi. There’s a huge risk that your devices could be hacked, sensitive data stolen or get infected with malware.

• Be careful what you share on social media. If you make your photos public, any thieves will be able to take advantage of your absence. Why not check who sees your posts and consider making it private to friends only, so you know only those you trust can see where you are?

Safe Local Trades member Ben from File Genie and his team can offer a wealth of advice and support whether updating your software and backing up your devices or if you think your device is not operating correctly. Get in touch here www.safelocaltrades.com/PE/peterborough/

An eco-friendly alternative, thanks to the non-toxic materials used, and available in a range of colours, a resin driveway is naturally draining, meaning no more puddles from heavy rainfall. They are highly resistant to rust, oil, corrosion, salt, and cracking, and are also the safest option, being resistant to abrasion, slipping, indentation and ignition.

The business owner explains how important it is to have a sound foundation, upon which the resin is to be applied. He recommends

RECOMMENDATIONS:

❝ … the men worked very hard, they were polite and very tidy and were able to answer all questions we asked them - a big thank you to Mark and his staff - well done!” (C.H.)

❝ From my very first meeting I felt I could trust Mark to ensure a professional job would be done. The team were very hard working and a pleasure to work with.” (P.H.)

❝ Mark’s team were very professional, tidy, and really friendly - cannot fault any aspect of their work from start to finish. They have transformed the front of our bungalowcannot recommend highly enough.” (S.S.)

to his clients the method which involves the excavation of the existing surface and installation of a permeable, tarmac sub-base, before a mixture of stone aggregate and a resin bonding solution is to be applied.

Whether you are looking for something subtle or eye-catching, Lincolnshire Resin Drives Ltd are confident you will find a driveway, path or patio that fits your requirements and complements your home. Langtoft Primary School

During the last few months, Langtoft Primary School have participated in many fantastic activities. Foundation Stage went on a fun visit to Hamerton Zoo and Year 2 spent a day at the Sealife Centre in Hunstanton, where they saw many interesting sea creatures.

In July, parents were invited to a “stay and play” afternoon, so they could get a real taste of our OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) sessions and experience all the fun it brings to playtimes. Continuing with OPAL, we would like to thank the Deeping Round Table for their generous donation, without which we would not have our huge sandpit which was helped to be built by Dan Needham of Paddock

and Mr Charity. Despite the hot weather, we had a successful Sports Day on the Pavilion field. Both Key Stage1 and Key Stage 2’s scores were added together, and it resulted in the Yellow Team winning. So, overall, a successful term was had by all at Langtoft! Report by Astrid and Eloise (Year 6).

As a Silver ‘Lincolnshire Reading Pledge’ school, we promote reading for pleasure and are always striving to update our class libraries. We have recently raised money through a sponsored read and book fair to buy new books for our children to enjoy. Thank you to all the parents and carers who made this possible. We raised £660 that we can spend on new books!

Deeping St James Primary School are delighted to share the news that one of our Year 4 teachers, Mrs Glover, was nominated for the “Term Times Class Teacher of the Year Award” for 2024. We found out just before our School Sports Day that she was officially the winner of this award! Mrs Glover received an overwhelming number of nominations, with parents rushing to praise both her teaching skills and the way she has supported the children in her class.

Head Teacher, Mr. Westley, said the Term Times Award is a fitting acknowledgement and recognition for Mrs Glover’s outstanding contribution to both the school and especially her class. He commented, “She has always been determined to ensure all the children in her class receive the best possible education and enjoy their time in school. The award just shows what all her colleagues already knew – what a brilliant, caring teacher she is!”

One of the numerous comments from parents was one from Jenny Purdy, describing Mrs Glover as her children’s “School Mum” and adding, “I am extremely grateful that the school has such a caring, inspiring teacher”.

Presently, there are limited places available at Deeping St James CPS. Please contact the school office for details on 01778 342314.

Linchfield Academy

Linchfield Academy are thrilled to report that they have been accepted into the Tesco Community Grants Scheme for July, August, and September!

The school opened in 1980 and the playground areas have been much loved over the years by so many pupils. Unfortunately, the ‘wear and tear’ is now taking its toll with old playground markings being no longer visible. An injection of fun is therefore required to re-engage the children once more. Play is as important to a child’s development as their classroom lessons. With children playing outdoors less and less outside of school, it is more important than ever that we provide an exciting space for them to play.

To help Linchfield Academy raise funds for their playground markings project, you can vote for them in all these Tesco stores: Market Deeping; Dogsthorpe; Stamford; Werrington; Chadburn.

Thank you for your support!

Fancy Joining a Friendly, Successful Choir?

Then Try The Glebe Singers

The Glebe Singers, who will be celebrating their 25th birthday shortly, have just completed another very successful year of singing.

With performances over the past months at Langtoft, Bourne and Peakirk, together with entertaining residents at local care homes last Christmas, they are already receiving requests to perform in different venues throughout the area. The choir has gone from strength to strength in number over the year and every single member, whether long-standing or a more recent newcomer, has contributed to make the Glebe Singers the strong choir that it is today.

At their recent concerts, audiences were able to enjoy a wide range of music - from Rodgers and Hammerstein to Gershwin; Rachmaninov to Copland; and more traditional pieces, such as ‘Dance to Your Daddy’ and ‘The Wellerman’.

The choir can be found rehearsing on Wednesday evenings, 7.30pm - 9pm during school term time at The Green School (PE6 8DA - opposite St. Guthlac’s Church in Market Deeping). They are currently taking a well-deserved rest over the summer holidays but will be back there from September 4th.

Whether you can read music or not and think that you might like to sing in a choir, they would love to meet you. Rehearsals are guaranteed to be a fun and social occasion, and you will be assured of a warm welcome, even if it is just to pop in and see if they are the choir you might like to be a part of.

Mamma Mia! Australian ABBA Show, “Bjorn Again” to Play at Grimsthorpe Castle

Saturday August 17th sees Grimsthorpe Castle playing host to the top ABBA show, “Björn Again”, having already played at such prestigious venues as Wembley Arena, the Royal Albert Hall, the London Palladium, Hyde Park and even Glastonbury!

“Bjorn Again” was founded in Melbourne, Australia, in 1988 by director and musician, Rod Stephen, as a light-hearted parody of Swedish superstars, ABBA. The show rapidly became a brand in its own right and has since achieved cult status.

Having been acknowledged by ABBA’s Bjorn Ulvaeus as the show that single-handedly initiated the ABBA revival in the late 1980s and early ’90s, “Bjorn Again” is without doubt one of the most successful shows of its type. It has been performed

over five thousand times in more than seventy countries!

At the spectacular setting of Grimsthorpe, come along and enjoy all the ABBA hits, from ‘Waterloo’ to ‘Mamma Mia’ and the unforgettable ‘Dancing Queen.’

Wills

Why do I need a will?

Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate.

If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.

Lasting Powers of Attorney

What are they?

Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.

These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.

Probate

What is it?

When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.

We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.
