e were so excited with the production of our first magazine and thrilled with the positive reception to it from readers. I was so delighted to get emails and phone calls telling me about clubs and societies in the March area and of forthcoming events. There really is a lot happening in March and the surrounding villages. Something to do every day of the week but I still think we haven’t found them all yet! Do keep emailing us with your listings and suggestions. All are carefully read and very much appreciated. The deadline for December is mid November but we’d love to receive them earlier. You won’t reach me for the first week in November though as I am on a trip to Uganda as I’ve been selected to represent UK agricultural journalists to look at food and farming. We will visit smallholder farming, co-operatives and coffee production and it is a great honour to have been chosen. So bear with me and I will answer all emails when I return. At home I have been pleased with the unexpected warmth for the time of year which has meant the heating has only been on a few times. In this issue we look at protecting your fuel from theft and an oil scheme for Cambridgeshire which might help to get lower competitive oil prices. There’s a lot going on in March this month as reflected in our events. I’m going to book a Christmas Wreath making day and card making afternoon at March FE Centre on the 2nd December. Fill in your survey! March Town Council are carrying out a neighbourhood plan which will be delivered to every house week commencing 12th November. Please do read through it and fill it in and return it to them as they really want EVERYONES views for the future. If you don’t fill it in, then they won’t be able to take your views into account and every individual’s views matter to them. Roll on a few days at home over Christmas.... Do let us know what you like best about Christmas in March!

The safest way to source a local tradesman 6

Consumer Advice By Eileen Le Voi www.safelocaltrades.com Dear readers, Most of

us will be aware of the term ‘rogue trader’ and each year, Trading Standards receive thousands of complaints about these uninvited traders and a large majority of them relate to home maintenance work such as roofing, tarmacing and paving, garden and tree surgery, insulation, general building work, burglar alarms and other services. The work or service offered can sometimes be unnecessary, overpriced, of a poor standard or not done at all. Typically they have no formal training to carry out the work offered and some may have links with distraction burglars. It is important that people have the confidence to say no to doorstep traders and take the time to think about the service being offered. The following is advice on how people can avoid being scammed by rogue doorstep traders: • Be cautious; if a trader knocks at your door, DO NOT agree to on the spot house repairs without taking advice. • Be wary of special offers or warnings that your house is unsafe. • Don’t allow anyone to pressure you into agreeing to have work carried out. If you ask them to leave and they don’t, contact the police on 999. • Do not make snap decisions. If you feel that any work needs carrying out on your property, take time to talk to family or neighbours before you make a decision. • Don’t ever go to a bank or cash point with a trader; legitimate traders would never do this!

If you have an experience with a rogue trader, please report it by telephoning 101 and or for live incidents where the rogue trader is still at the property, or is due to return, contact the police on 999. The police have a protocol for dealing with these incidents and welcome your contact.

ur Year 6 pupils have recently returned from a residential weekend at Caythorpe Outdoor Activity Centre. On Friday afternoon 64 pupils and 9 members of staff embarked on to the buses, leaving waving parents behind. The children had the opportunity to take part in a number of activities – high ropes, canoeing, archery and den building. They worked together, cheering each other on and challenging themselves. Back at school the remaining Year 6 pupils took part in ‘Westhorpe’ and used the school grounds which includes a wooded area, a traversing wall and musical instruments, to develop skills. On Friday 4th October the school hall was turned into a Planetarium to help our Year 5 pupils to understand the wonders of earth and space. The children entered in darkness to see the sky alight with stars and planets. Later this term our Year 3 and Year 4 pupils will be off to Tallington Lakes to experience

tobogganing and skiing. This supports our aim to introduce our children to a range of sports to encourage healthy lifestyles. It is going to be an exciting year at Westwood with lots to look forward to. Children learn when they are motivated and inspired both in and out of the classroom.

A word from

Stephen Court new Liberal Democrat Councillor

Discovering March asks the questions!

Q

How long have you lived in March? I have lived in March since 1973. My father relocated with his family with his job as a train driver from our home town of Hartlepool to March. Both towns at that time were important railway centres. We moved onto a brand new house on the then Cavalry Barn Estate.

Why did you want to become a Councillor?

Q

I joined the Liberal Democrats back in the early 90s but didn’t get the opportunity to stand for council until 2007 when I stood for a district seat in March west ward. Since then I stood in 2009 in a by election in March and again for both town and district seats in 2011. I have stood three times this year for council in March North. I stood in February in a by election for a town seat in March North and lost out by just 3 votes to the Conservative candidate Malcolm George. However in the by election in September for the town council seat of March North I won the seat with a big majority polling 514 to the Conservatives 358. I wanted to become a councillor to break the one party politics on March town council and to bring a fresh voice and perspective to the council.

Q

What do you feel is your greatest achievement as a Councillor?

Its important to able to be able to listen to the residents in the ward and be able to represent their views in council. I believe that a councillor should have a strong commitment to the local community and I will endeavour to be a hard working community councillor for the people of March North who is visable, accountable and accessible all year round and not just at election times.

Q Q

What do you think is March’s strongest asset?

The size of the town means that the people should be able to integrate with each other not be strangers but be a real community.

What would you like to do in office?

Pictured: Stephen with his family in 1974 outside their house on Cavalry Drive I would like to see a community cinema developed in March similar to the one in Chatteris and Wimblington. With the loss of the town’s former cinema (now a Weatherspoons pub) I believe that there is now an opening for such a project. Obviously you would have to find a suitable venue and people to run it but the model is there to copy from Chatteris and from Wimblington Film Club.

Then just for fun- choose one of each pair

Benefits of Inversion

The single greatest stress on the human body is the pull of gravity. The mysterious force which stops us drifting off into space exerts a huge pressure on our bones, muscles and joints, resulting in us losing several centimetres in height over our lifetime, as the discs between our vertebrae become compressed. Continued downward pressure on our bodies also contributes to the gradual prolapse (or sagging) of our organs as they settle lower into the abdomen in what we call “middle-aged spread” and this can reduce their efficiency. Inversion therapy can help to reverse these effects, and bring a host of other benefits, in a surprisingly short time. The gentle stretch of the spine separates the vertebrae, allowing the discs to restore and reducing nerve impingement. The circulation improves, increasing the supply of oxygen-rich blood to the brain, and better lymphatic drainage reduces swelling in lower limbs. The body can realign, muscle soreness dissipates, and stress can be reduced. It’s interesting to note that bats and sloths, which rest hanging upsidedown, are the only vertebrates which do not suffer from osteo-arthritis. Food for thought….. An inversion session is pleasant and relaxing – once you adapt to the unusual sensation of your head being lower than your feet. You don’t have to invert completely: the benefits start once you go beyond the horizontal and an angle of 60 degrees reduces the disc pressure to zero. Experienced users may choose full inversion, allowing them to exercise whilst upside down. Inversion tables can be used as part of a maintenance or fitness programme a few times a week, or simply to adjust the posture as a one-off treatment. Please note: People suffering from certain medical conditions will be advised to consult with their Doctor before using the inversion tables.

he warm smell of Southern Italian cooking filled the air as we entered Mamma Mia which is alongside the river Nene in March. From the restaurant there is a peaceful river scene with colourful narrow boats gentle bobbing up and down. Pep Guarnaccia who owns the restaurant comes from a family who are passionate about Southern Italian cooking and he was brought up eating dishes that originate from around Naples, their original home town. He is determined to carry on the tradition and carefully sources ingredients from Italy to get the authentic taste and always sources the freshest fruit and vegetables to compliment them. He's been working with Italian food since he was ten years old but still feels he wants to share his love of Southern Italian cooking with people so they can experience the delight he and his family have had from eating these dishes. As we looked through our menus, trying to choose just one of the delicious options on offer, the waiting staff were attentive but not intrusive. Eventually we opted for Pollo Romano which is chicken strips cooked on brand, white wine, mushroom and a cream sauce and for me, Tagliatelle Con Salmone – as the name suggests, salmon, white wine, broccoli, garlic and a cream sauce. The dishes were delivered piping hot and we were offered additional black pepper and grated cheese which we gleefully accepted. The portions were a good size and didn't leave you feeling at all hungry and again the service was excellent. Although it is true to say we were tempted by the dessert menu we went for coffee on this occasion. Looking at the menu as we sipped, I noticed for next time the Mamma Mia antipasti – a selection of cheese, meats and olives which is so typically Italian and one of my favourite dishes, Insalata Caprese, the finest Buffalo Mozzarella served on sliced tomatoes with olive oil and red onions. Memory Lane - Home-made should mean love on a plate

The creator of Memory Lane Bakery, Judy Bright grew up in a family where almost everything was either home-made or home grown, not from any high idea of saving the planet but simply through lack of funds. Judy had never tasted shop bought bread until a stay in hospital she was five and found it so bad she hid it under her pillow! As a teenager Judy wanted to take domestic science at O level and make a career out of cooking but was discouraged so carried the tradition and passion for home cooking and baking into her family life - all her four children are also enthusiastic! Judy did work in the catering business on and off over the years but when she was made redundant just over a year ago so she decided it was time to follow the dream and Memory Lane Bakery was born. Judy says “I believe that quality home-made cakes and bakes have the power not only to evoke special memories but also to create them from the small events of everyday as well as life’s big occasions. With that in mind I try to make everything I bake both look and taste really good with quality ingredients and attention to detail. Home-made should mean love on a plate.”

The only shop in March exclusively selling fruit and veg but also selling home brew kit, has now opened at 48 Dartford Road, PE15 8BQ March, Cambridgeshire. Gary Tickner and Sandy Stanford are behind the new venture and an enthusiastic Gary spoke to Discovering March.

H

e told us of his commitment to fresh fruit and vegetable and that as well as the shop, they were opening a home delivery service. Veg boxes can be made up at competitive prices. They also provide wholesale fruit and veg to the restaurant and pub trade and are happy to quote for specific requirements. But as well as now being able to buy fruit and veg from a knowledgeable supplier, people in March can also have a go at home brewing as Gary is himself a keen enthusiast since the age of 16 years old. He explained, “I used to get frustrated buying on line because you couldn't quite see what you were buying and there was no one to ask or give practical advice. So here we make sure you can see exactly what you are buying and all our advice comes free from people who already do successful home brewing.”

What advice would he give to the new home brewer? “Don't spend too much to start with leave that until you know you are serious about it.” With Christmas just around the corner, a home brew kit would be an ideal present especially for the beer drinker in your life. A present that ultimately would help to save money and with help and advice available locally you won't feel on your own when you begin brewing.

..November in the town by Jennifer Lawler

F

rom medieval times All Hallows’ (Holy) Eve or Hallowe’en on October 31st was followed on November 1st by All Hallows Day or All Saints Day celebrating all of the saints, especially those without their own saint’s day. November 2nd was All Souls’ Day to remember everyone who had died. The Feast of St Martin or Martinmas on November 11th, meant a feast and celebration of the end of preparations in storing provisions for winter. Martinmas was important in the agricultural year of a town like March as it marked the beginning of the season of winter and changes for people working on the land. Beef was butchered and salted and preserved for the winter. Women moved to working indoors through the winter. Charles Vancouver, an American agriculturist, found that agricultural wages and hours worked depended on the season and changed in November at Martinmas. In 1794 his account of agriculture in Cambridgeshire, including visits to Doddington and its hamlet ‘Merch’ (March), was published. From Martinmas to Lady Day (Spring, March 25th) workers earned just 15 pence a day, from Lady Day to Midsummer (Summer, June) 18d, and from Midsummer to corn harvest, 2 shillings to 2 shillings and 6d. During harvest they earned from 3 shillings to 5 shillings, and sometimes 6 to 9 shillings, and from the end of harvest to Martinmas, 18d a day. From Martinmas to Lady Day agricultural labourers worked from 7am to 5pm and from Lady Day to Martinmas, a longer day from 6am to 6pm. November and June were the months for the owners of the Adventurers’ Lands in the Middle and South Levels in Fenland to pay their taxes. Francis Russell Earl of Bedford and fellow 17th century Adventurers (capital investors) had funded Fenland drainage work and been rewarded with acres of land for agriculture. Owners of 83,000 acres of Middle and South Level Adventurers’

lands paid a tax in June and a ¾ tax in November on the land which had been sorted into 11 rates. Land taxed around March in November 1828 included Great Binnimore, West Fen and West Fen Close, Burroughmore, Creek, Norwood Closes, Granford and around Granford, at the Chain, Whitemoor, and near Flood’s Ferry. On November 21 1862 The London Gazette reported that The Great Northern Railway Company intended to apply to Parliament to bring a Bill to enable them to make the railway from Spalding to March. It would go from the junction with the loop line, 80 yards from where the GNRC crossed the Bourn Turnpike Road in Spalding, to pass through Cowbit, Peakhill, Deeping Saint Nicholas, Weston Saint Mary, Moulton, Moulton Chapelry, Crowland, Portland, Whaplode, Whaplode Drove Chapelry, Fleet, Holbeach, Gedney, Gedney Hill Chapelry, Long Sutton, Sutton Saint Edmunds, Leverington, Parson Drove Chapelry, Thorney, Wisbeach Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Wisbeach Saint Mary, Whittlesey, Elm, Doddington, and March. It would terminate at a junction with the March and Wisbeach Line of the Great Eastern Railway, about ten yards north of where the March and Wisbeach Line crossed Norwood Side Grove, which ran from Norwood Side to Estopher Farm. Detailed plans, also containing names of landowners, occupiers and lessees, and a map, would be available in Boston, Wisbeach and Cambridge, together with a copy of the London Gazette notice which would be also with the parish clerk of each parish affected. The March to Spalding line closed on November 27th 1982, 120 years later. 1. Vancouver, C. (1794) Agriculture in the County of Cambridge. London, W. Smith 2. Wells, S. Security advice - keep safe this winter HEATING AND DIESEL OIL THEFT

This time of year we see an increase in heating oil and diesel thefts. In light of this, please see the heating oil security advice below, which could reduce the chances of you being a victim. Theft of heating and diesel oil has been a problem for many years and the police have noticed an increase in this type of crime whenever the price of crude oil rises. A rise in the price of fuel at the petrol pump inevitably leads to a rise in the costs of heating oil. This makes oil a more attractive proposition for thieves who are targeting fuel tanks at farms, transport depots and domestic properties. The thieves may be using the oil for their own central heating or selling it on at a handsome profit. Tanks can contain many thousands of pounds worth of oil and it therefore makes good sense to take a few precautions to protect them. The purpose of this information is to give the reader a few ideas about what can be done to make life more difficult for thieves.

SITTING YOUR OIL TANK

The position of the tank can have a significant effect on how hard a target it is in the eyes of the thief. If the tank is close to the house, with one or more windows capable of giving a view 26

Discovering March November 2013

DiscoveringMarchNovember2013.indd 26

of it, then the thief may consider the chances of being seen too high. If the tank is close to a road, path, drive or alleyway then it will be a far easier target. Hiding the tank behind the garage, shed or some other type of outbuilding is fairly commonplace, but it does give the thief the advantage. While it may not be desirable, or legal, to have the tank close to the house some sort of compromise location would be sensible. Of course this will not only be a major consideration when a new tank is to be installed but may be necessary if the tank has been targeted before. Tanks do need to be within a reasonable distance of the road otherwise the oil supply company may not be able to refill it for you.

PADLOCKS

A thief will usually come equipped with a limited range of tools to attack your tank so it’s worth spending a little more on good quality locks. Close shackle padlocks are the best as they offer most resistance to the most popular of burglar tools; the bolt cropper! Due to their design, close shackle padlocks have very little of the metal hoop (shackle) exposed and bolt croppers cannot get a good grip. Remember that buying

Introducing an established Community Oil Scheme Heating oil users in March are being urged to save money by stocking up early before winter and joining the community oil buying scheme. Research shows 55% of homes in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough rural areas are off the gas grid, so many households rely on heating oil. In times of high demand, such as the cold snap of 2012/13, prices can increase rapidly, leaving the most vulnerable unable to afford to adequately heat their homes. Prices and demand tend to be lower in the autumn and delivery is not disrupted by increased demand

and icy weather. Households are urged to buy their oil now so that they are prepared when the colder weather arrives and the time comes to switch on the heating Cambridgeshire ACRE runs a community oilbuying scheme which buys, on average, more than 30,000 litres of oil per month on behalf of over 300 members. Members of the Cambridgeshire ACRE Community Oil Buying Scheme have just had their oil order for September secured at 55 pence per litre (exclusive of VAT @ 5%). The environment benefits too. If deliveries are organised so that one tanker delivers to several customers in a village, instead of making lots of individual deliveries, the fuel consumption is reduced and so is traffic in the village. To find out more about Cambridgeshire ACRE’s community oil buying scheme contact Julie Weekes at Cambridgeshire ACRE on 01353 860850 or visit our website www.cambsacre.org.uk.

By PCSO's Dave Russ, Katrina Walker & Oksana Sultanova Wisbech Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team a padlock is like buying a car. The more you pay the better the quality and the longer it will last.

OIL LEVEL GAUGES

Remote electronic oil level gauges are now available which will set off an audible alarm if the oil level in the tank suddenly drops or falls below a quarter full. These gauges can be located in the kitchen or perhaps a utility room to warn of any potential problem. There are two or three different versions on the market at the moment. Get into the habit of regularly checking oil levels so that you will know if you have lost any.

SECURITY LIGHTS

Security lights can have a very positive effect and make any property a much harder target to the thief. It’s not always necessary to floodlight the area with high power beams, as a more subtle level of lighting may be all that is needed. Low energy ‘dusk till dawn’ lights positioned close to the tank should, in most cases, provide sufficient light to illuminate any suspicious activity. This type of light can be both effective and inexpensive. High powered lights can be used but care should be taken not to cause any nuisance to neighbours or road users.

SECURING YOUR OIL TANK

Following on from the defensive plant tactic, fences and walls can also make life difficult for the thief. A wooden or metal fence, trellis or wall can give significant protection to the tank, but it must be remembered that the oil tanker driver will need access to fill the tank! A metal or grill cage with a lockable access point across the top of this wall or fence can further improve security. The wall or fence should be as close to the tank and as high as possible. Of course a trellis could also be decorated with defensive planting.

Closed circuit television (CCTV)

The use of CCTV as crime prevention and a crime detection tool has grown massively in recent years. It could play a part in the protection of oil tanks, but before you spend lots of money on equipment make an assessment of your needs. The object of this information has been to illustrate ways in which we can make it more difficult for a thief to steal heating oil. Nothing mentioned here will make it impossible for them to achieve their goal, but if some of the suggestions made are followed it just may make a difference. November 2013

Pet’s Corner

By Tracey Longmuir

Firework advice for pet owners It’s the time of year where many of us look forward to Bonfire Night and the accompanying firework displays but sadly many pets become stressed and fearful in the run up to and during fireworks night. Approximately 80% of pets are frightened of fireworks so you’re not on your own with trying to find what works to keep them calm and stress-free so here are some Do’s and Don’ts you can try before and during the swooshes and the bangs!

Do

In the run up to Bonfire Night…

1. Walk your dogs when it is still light outside, if you can’t manage this then ask your local dog walker to do this for you. This reduces the possibility of fireworks being set off and your dog becoming worried. 2. Download Firework noises from You Tube or buy loud noise music and play it for short bursts daily, gradually increasing the volume associating it with rewards and positive experiences helps teach dogs that loud noises need not be scary at all. On the night… 3. Provide a bed in a place where your pet can feel safe and train your dog to associate this area with positive experiences e.g. treats and toys. 4. Increase your pet’s feeling of calm by dabbing their paws with a couple of drops of lavender oil and feeding them chamomile treats (made from soaking their treats in chamomile tea). 5. Help them to feel secure by plugging in pheromone diffusers (available from your local vets) as close to their bed as possible, start using the diffuser at least a few days before fireworks are expected. 6. Make sure all windows, doors and cat flaps are securely closed during fireworks night. This will reduce the chances of your pets escaping. 7. Provide extra litter trays for cats in case they 30

are not used to being confined to the house. 8. Provide distractions such as new toys or chews. Draw curtains and switch on the TV to mask the noise from the fireworks. 9. Invite a neighbour’s dog over that’s not frightened, it will have a positive effect on your scared dog. If you think none of the above will please seek advice from your vets

Do Not

• Don’t leave your pets home alone while fireworks are going off, pets will be more relaxed when they have a familiar person with them during this time. • Don’t make a fuss of them if they are showing signs of fear, panting, pacing quivering etc, leave them alone and ignore their behavior. • DO NOT punish your pet! This will only make your pet more distressed.

Most of all enjoy your evening and try and make it as stress free as possible for your pooch!
