For most people, December means just one thing…

Christmas! Yes, it’s that time of year again when everyone’s thoughts turn to December 25th and this month’s issue is guaranteed to get you in the mood for the big day with plenty of Christmas themed articles!

Whatever your faith, the festive holiday season is the time when families invariably join together to celebrate and take a well-earned break from the stresses and strains of everyday life before we get ready for another new year... it doesn’t seem possible that the Millennium was almost twenty years ago!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our readers, contributors and advertisers who have supported us throughout 2019.

December is a time for both reflection on what’s gone and anticipation for what’s around the corner of the new year.

We can think about what we’ve achieved; those places we’ve visited and new people who may have come into our lives; others who we’ll see no more, but whose memory will remain strong. I prefer to look forward, though, and those new year resolutions are already in the planning stage!

Paninis Throw Open their Doors to All on Christmas Day

O

nce again, Barty is inviting one and all to come and celebrate Christmas Day at Paninis, and it’s all on the house!

Last year, forty-seven people shared their Christmas meal with Barty and his dedicated team of helpers over two sittings. There will be two sittings again this year – one at 12 Noon and the second at 2pm. Barty can host twenty-five people at each sitting, so fifty lucky people will be assured of the most fabulous time on Christmas Day.

Wine - Six Christmas Crackers

F

or Christmas festivities wines always find general favour. Which wines, what with and when, however, need not be so complex. I selected some popular choices, that satisfy many situations and which also pair with food, admirably. Not forgetting Santa (and his grown-up helpers!), when he does his rounds, a joyful sherry is always welcome!

For Christmas morning, Bucks Fizz has become a regular, traditional option for many. A mix of two parts orange juice and one part champagne, can incorporate your favourite champagne. I like a champagne that is powerful, elegant and crisp.

Bucks Fizz can also be purchased ready mixed, in bottles.

To accompany turkey, Merlot can be classed as a lighter wine option. Chilean Merlot is wonderful and Clos Apalta Casa Lapostolle is excellent. This darkcoloured production is bold and voluptuous and a great recommendation for a wine to enjoy around the Christmas table.

Goose has a stronger flavour than turkey and Pinot Noir makes a splendid accompaniment. Villa Maria Reserve Marlborough, from New Zealand, pairs well with the rich flavours of goose. The complex palate is well-balanced for this wine, which is regularly chosen as a pairing for this dish.

splendid by itself. The Grant’s production (a favourite tipple of Queen Victoria, I am informed), makes a brilliant tasting addition to a rich and fruity Christmas punch, as well as being a fabulous pairing with Christmas pudding.

Port is a trusted favourite for ending a meal, particularly with cheeses. A favourite of mine is Graham’s. The deep ruby-red colour entices to the dark, fruity bouquet, which furthers the enjoyment for the mouthfeel and palate, with a long finish.

We cannot forget Santa, of course! A good idea (in my opinion) is to leave a very acceptable sherry for Santa – and his grown-up helpers! Fernando de Castilla Classic Pedro Ximenez I find to be a sherry that goes on pleasing. Big on flavour and sweetness, this is very good and elegant.

I know, I know, it’s that time of year again. But, if it works, it works! I hope you have a wonderful time and enjoy the drinks (if you wish to) that suit you. Merry Christmas!

Our team of podiatrists can provide advice and treatment if you have painful feet, thickened or discoloured toenails, cracks or cuts in the skin, verrucae, or any other foot-related problem.

We can assess your feet and also prescribe orthoses, which are tailor-made insoles, to help to relieve arch, foot or heel pain. Orthoses go into your shoe to help to re-align your foot, take pressure off vulnerable areas of your foot, and help improve your foot function.

Even if your feet are generally in good condition, you might consider having a single session of podiatry to have the hard skin on your feet removed, toenails trimmed, find out if you’re wearing the right shoes, (take your shoes with you for specific advice on footwear), or just to check that you’re looking after your feet properly.

Podiatrists can also help with more complex foot problems, including preventing, diagnosing and treating injuries related to sports and/or exercise.

from Holly-Jean h, Christmas, the most wonderful time of the year, some would say! Christmas magic is silent. You don’t hear it - you feel it, you know it, you believe it. It’s not under the tree, it’s around it and inside all of the people you love. Now, all of the cheesy quotes are out of the way - let’s get real about Christmas.

You’re stressed about what to buy your significant other. You’re worried about whether you’ve got enough wrapping. What on earth is a turtle dove? And who even knows exactly how long to cook a turkey for?!

Christmas can be a stressful time of year. Crikey, I’m even stressed about how many times I’ve said the word Christmas in this article already. But why does it even have to be stressful? It should be the happiest time of the year, spent with your family, laughing, eating and smiling. Christmas is a funny time of year; some people don’t choose to celebrate it, and some of us have been wearing ‘Ho Ho Ho’ pyjamas, watching ‘Elf’ for the last three months. Some people go big, some people go small, and whichever of these categories you fall into, that is perfectly okay.

I love Christmas; I love all of the festivities. From towns and villages lighting up the streets to just sitting by the tree with your family on the 25th. Every single part of Christmas, the food, the happiness, the weather- I just can’t get enough Christmas. Mince pies, Brussels sprouts, the lot. And, this may be the case for you and your family too.

However, this article is not just for the turkey-dressed, Christmas-obsessed.

This article is also for those that don’t celebrate Christmas- whether it’s not practised in your faith or that you just don’t enjoy the holiday- that is okay.

The way you celebrate Christmas and have done for all of your life will live with you forever. It is not just a tradition, but a lifestyle.

Different people celebrate Christmas very differently- I used to have a friend who would sit at the table on the 25th, with her family, with a takeaway pizza. Are you in Magaluf singing along to Michael Buble- is that what you do? Do you roast chestnuts and watch the Queen’s speech? Are you the slightly tipsy relative who shows up late and breaks one of the kids’ presents? Or are you pleasantly sat at home on Christmas Day, enjoying the company of those around you?

To me, it doesn’t matter. Presents don’t have to be a thing, nor a big dinner or even any Christmas songs, (though I am partial to a bit of Mariah Carey this time of year!) It doesn’t matter if you don’t celebrate it, if you go over the top on celebrating, or if you can’t wait until the holiday is over! As long as you’re happy- then that is surely all that matters.

Also, if you find that you don’t enjoy this time of year, for whatever reason, please just know that you’re not alone in that. However you feel, that’s okay, as long as you don’t feel alone.

Lyncroft Care Home Host Successful Open Days To Showcase Luxury Refurbishment Lyncroft Care Home on Clarkson Avenue in Wisbech enjoyed a successful weekend recently, showcasing the extension and refurbishment project that has been ongoing for the past few months. The new areas of the home were declared officially open when the ribbon was cut by the Mayor of Wisbech, Councillor Michael Hill and the Rt. Hon. Stephen Barclay, MP for North East Cambridgeshire. During the weekend, over one hundred visitors had the opportunity to take a tour of the home, meet the staff team and sample the delicious food on offer. The residential care home has an additional fourteen en-suite bedrooms, plus refurbished lounge and dining areas, bistro café and even its own pub!

Brenda Durrington, Home Manager at Lyncroft Care Home, explained, “The refurbishment of the home is already having a positive impact on the day-to-day lives of our residents and their families.

People appreciate having more places to relax and enjoy visits with their families. Having such a wonderful, fresh and spacious environment makes all the difference to people”.

Other new areas of the home include a hairdressing salon, spa room, and library. The home features

When Will Grandparents Be Recognised?

With Christmas around the corner, many families will be making preparations to spend time together over the festive period. However, in cases where parents have separated or divorced, this is not always so straightforward. While both parents automatically retain the right to see their children after a relationship breaks down, grandparents do not, and this can sometimes make it difficult for them to see their grandchildren.

It can be heart-breaking to be denied the opportunity to spend time with your grandchildren, but a recent study has shown that this situation is not uncommon. In some areas, as many as one-third of grandparents have been restricted from seeing their grandchildren, and many believed that parental divorce or separation had played a role in this.

If, after a relationship or marriage comes to an end, the separated parents cannot agree on the living and contact arrangements for their children, either one can make an application to the court for an order, setting out the arrangements. The law presumes that it is in the best interests of the child to have both parents involved in their upbringing.

However, there is no such presumption in favour of grandparents spending meaningful time with their grandchildren. Whilst grandparents can initiate legal proceedings, the court must give them permission to start a case, and will have to consider the connection that they have, and any risk that the case could cause harm and disruption to the child.

The courts do recognise the importance of a relationship between the grandparent and grandchild and, when an application for contact is made by a grandparent, it is often granted unless there is a good reason why it should not be. However, the reality is that grandparents face additional hurdles when fighting for contact.

Last year, it seemed as though some of these hurdles were going to be removed. In the summer of 2018, some MPs called for a change to the Children Act to ensure that relationships between grandparents and grandchildren were maintained in the event of parental separation. The House of Commons suggested amending the law to extend the presumption of involvement to include grandparents, and to remove the requirement to apply for permission.

Unfortunately, these proposals did not get off the ground, and at the current time, the legal position for grandparents remains unchanged.

Calls for legal reform continue, and it is hoped that this will be addressed in the future, so that the law will come to formally recognise the role that grandparents play in their grandchildren’s lives.

ell it’s that time of year again, when the Christmas trees and decorations are up and the shops are full of toys, cards and tons of over indulgent food.

But the real story of Santa Claus started in far away Turkey (no pun intended!). Saint Nicholas was a Bishop who had a reputation of giving to the poor of his community and showing great kindness to children.

One of his neighbours could not afford the dowry for his daughter’s wedding and legend has it that Saint Nicholas dropped a bag of gold coins down the chimney which landed in a stocking that was hung on the chimney breast to dry. After the man found out who had given this gift, he was sworn to secrecy, but the story soon got out and every time someone received an unexpected gift it was said that it was from Saint Nicholas.

As with all stories over the generations it grew and soon word had spread across to other countries of a magical man who delivered presents of toys to the children on Christmas Day.

We all recognise Santa’s bright red suit, and many say that this is a result of an advertising campaign run by Coca Cola but in fact it originates from the fact that Bishops wore red and white robes.

Sadly, nowadays Christmas has become for many a long drawn out campaign of adverts trying to persuade us to spend large amounts of money on toys that our children don’t always want and often seldom need. The true meaning of giving gifts to our loved ones has too often become a battle to see who can spend the most and give the most. But the true essence of Christmas is a time to be thankful for what we have to show love and appreciation for those around us and to bring some magic back into the lives of the child. Let them just for a while believe that Santa is magical, that the toys are made by elves and they all live in the North Pole. He doesn’t get the toys from leading retailers and they are delivered by a man in a red suit who travels on a sleigh pulled by reindeers. He can get right around the world in one night and still be home before we wake up.

So, on Christmas Eve keep the magic going and listen out for those sleigh bells and hooves on the roof for maybe it really is magic after all.

TACKLING MODERN SLAVERY, SECURING A NEW BREXIT DEAL AND MORE INVESTMENT IN OUR SCHOOLS – By Steve Barclay MP

It’s been a very busy few weeks in Westminster, Brussels and here in North East Cambridgeshire.

As many readers will be aware, I have been serving nationally as Brexit Secretary for almost a year. A key part of my role has been negotiating with EU nations to help secure a new Brexit deal.

Initially, we were told this was an impossible task. But after many weeks of hard work and determination, we managed to negotiate a good new deal that allows us to deliver on the referendum result and get Brexit done. After constant stalemate in Parliament, the upcoming General Election will now be an opportunity to end the deadlock and get on to other priorities.

It’s a great privilege to be in a position to highlight the importance of tackling this terrible, largely hidden, crime and to work with the local police, council, Rosmini Centre, Ferry Project and others to identify where it occurs.

Another issue I hope to continue making progress on is our status as an Education Opportunity Area. We’re one of only twelve

Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice’s popular charity tree-cycling is back, helping local people recycle their real Christmas trees while raising vital funds for the hospice.

The scheme, first launched by Nene Valley Tree Services last year, saw recycled Christmas trees raise more than £400 which could pay for 21 hours of hospice care.

This year the charity Christmas tree-cycling service will be bigger and better than ever, with collections now available directly from people’s own homes on January 4th and 11th, 2020.

In return for a £10 donation, Christmas trees will be collected and chipped into mulch to be used in the beautiful grounds of Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice and donated to local farms. This means residents who chose to Tree-Cycle in support of Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall will not only raise vital funds for local families needing care from the hospice but reduce landfill and support local farming businesses too.

Rachel Hancock, community fundraiser at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice said: “Following the interest we received last year for Christmas tree chipping, we will this year be offering a collection service from people’s homes. So why not reduce the worry of what to do with your real tree after the festivities have ended, and carry on the season of goodwill by choosing to tree-cycle your tree in support of our hospice?”

LOOK OUT FOR PIG DYKE MOLLY THIS FESTIVE SEASON The Pig Dyke Molly Dancers will be out and about in Cambridgeshire over the Christmas and the New Year season.

Many readers will have already seen them roaming around the streets in a bewildered fashion and dancing in spots around towns dressed in their colourful black and white attire.

Molly dancing is said to be a division of Morris dancing, but far more sophisticated and subtle.

They do not need the stIcks, bells or hankies as props for dancing, relying on the sheer elegance of their art form to entertain the public.

Starting in mid-December they can be found carol singing along Oakdale Avenue in Peterborough and on New Year’s Eve will be dancing around in every pub, alehouse, party or hostelry that will accept them in the Whittlesey area.

All the money that they collect from these two events is donated to Macmillan Cancer Care. Each year they raise in excess of £1000 and estimate that over the years they have donated about £18,000 to this charity.

Pig Dyke Molly consists of a very broad variety of characters with very differing professions and backgrounds. They have an age range between eight and eighty and mixed sexes and have a striking visual appearance and vibrant dancing style coupled with unique music that has led to them being so successful.

The group – which has doubled its number of dancers in the past two years – will be appearing at the Whittlesey Straw Bear festival in mid-January 2020.

PARK WORKERS GET THEIR SKATES ON… Work on a state-of-the-art skate park facility in West End Park, March is expected to be completed soon.

The park’s old metal frame structure, which was more than 15 years old, has been removed to be replaced with a bigger, free-form concrete construction. The materials used will be harder wearing and is considered the best surface for skateboarders, BMX and scooter riders.

The park is already well used by residents from the town, and Doddington and Wimblington – from primary age children, right up to adults over 30.

But design improvements are expected to make the facility even more popular and will also allow beginner and expert users to use the equipment at the same time thanks to different level areas.

The £120,000 improvements have been part funded by Fenland District Council (£90,000) and through a £30,000 grant from the Amey Community Fund. A stakeholder group with March Town Council and Young People March was key in getting the project moving and gathering community feedback to shape the final design.

More than 450 comments were received in the space of just two weeks during public consultation.

Councillor Jan French, deputy leader of Fenland District Council and district and town councillor for March West, said: “I'm delighted to see this project coming to fruition. The skate park is a great asset to March, but the new and improved facility will ensure it benefits future generations of young people for many years to come.”

WAYNE’S A WORTHY WINNER March firefighter Wayne Marshall has won the ITV Pride of Britain regional final for his local charity work Wayne, and his wife Kay, were invited to be guests at a star-studded London awards ceremony and he was also featured on the ITV news.

He received the award for fundraising for MAGPAS air ambulance, collecting £30,000 in two years by organising indoor spinning events.

GRANTS TO HELP RESIDENTS KEEP WARM AT HOME Homeowners are being offered help to reduce their energy bills and keep warm and well in their homes this winter thanks to a new grant scheme from Fenland District Council.

Grants are available from the council’s Better Care Fund to install first-time gas central heating or to cover some, or all, of the cost of repairing or replacing broken or inefficient household boilers and electric storage heaters.

The funding will help qualifying residents to save money on their fuel bills and improve the energy efficiency of their homes while keeping them warm and cosy. The scheme is available to Fenland residents who own their property and have bills and benefits registered to that address.

Homeowners must also receive a means tested benefit to qualify for the scheme or have a low household income with high energy bills.

Elderly residents, those with a young family, pregnant women or residents with a health condition made worse by the cold, could also qualify.

And So This Is Christmas... his month we will all be out shopping for Christmas presents, and no doubt this will include a few ‘techie’ items. So, we thought it worthwhile to provide a few hints to consider when buying items.

Laptops A few pointers here – avoid any laptop with only 32Gb SSD/’Memory’. After a few updates/ upgrades from Microsoft, you will find that feature upgrades cannot be installed due to lack of hard drive space. Also, don’t be tempted by 1Gb/2Gb hard drives. Most people do not need nor use this space, only if you are downloading and saving films or thousands of photographs will this be needed. Rather, go for a laptop with a 120Gb/ 240Gb SSD. A solid state drive performs up to 10x faster than an ordinary hard drive. Laptop performance is significantly improved, and over time the laptop will not slow down as it would with a normal hard drive.

Also, look out for laptops with either i3/i5 processors.

Again, they will perform significantly better than laptops fitted with a Pentium processor. However, a Pentium processor with an SSD will perform equally as well as an i3/i5 without an SSD. Chromebooks are, relatively, inexpensive.

However, you will need to bear in mind that this uses the ‘Chrome’ operating system, which cannot always support some of the features you may want to use and which are readily available from Microsoft Windows. However, once you are used to some of the differences, they are an excellent laptop for surfing and emailing.

A final point here – if you are buying a laptop to replace an existing but slow laptop, why not consider having the existing laptop ‘refurbished’?

With a new SSD, clean and paste and upgraded RAM, you may find you then have a laptop performing at the specification of a £400/500 laptop, at a relatively modest cost of £169-£209, so don’t hesitate to seek our advice.

Gaming Towers Only buy one of these if you are sure you don’t want a new Xbox or PlayStation console. Then decide what games you want to play and check the specification of gaming tower required to play those games.

Next, whatever GPU (graphics card) is required, go for either the next level GPU or, preferably, two steps up. That way you will be over-specifying your tower and building in redundancy for future games’ GPU requirements. An excellent moneysaving tip here is to choose AMD processors over Intel. In virtually all testing, AMD performs the same, if not better, than the equivalent Intel processor at a significantly lower cost.

Games Consoles You basically have two main choices here. Either a PlayStation console or an Xbox console. From our perspective there is little to choose between the two, so do a little Googling and make your choice. Also, as it’s Christmas, ensure you buy a console from a retailer providing a good selection of ‘free’ games.

Tablets The choice here is between Apple and Android.

Local History

Depravity in the 19th Century

– By Peter Wright (on behalf of March & District Museum) Dobson had also visited. These two were arrested along with Mary and appeared before Chatteris magistrates on February 18th, 1842.

T

he home of widow Mary Simpole in High Street hid a dark secret. Her husband Robert, a carpenter and joiner, had died in 1813 leaving £500 in his will, the interest from which was for the maintenance of his daughter Sarah.

William Stratton married Sarah in 1824, but when he died in 1828, her mind was confused, and she returned to the care of her mother. By about 1838, Sarah had disappeared. Those who made enquiries as to her whereabouts were told that she had been committed to an asylum.

When in the early weeks of 1842, Mary became ill, young Mary Ann Gibson was employed to care for her. Unable to get up, Mary Simpole instructed Gibson to take meat and potatoes to feed her daughter. The door of her room was fastened by a nail through two staples and the plate of food had to be passed through a hole in the wall. Gibson looked through the hole and was shocked to see a naked woman with grey hair thickly matted.

Her nails were nearly three inches long and the floor of the room was covered in excrement.

Not surprisingly, Gibson was frequently ill from the stench of the house and resolved to tell what she knew.

As a result of Gibson’s declaration, the police were called. When they opened the door, the stench was so bad they would not enter. Sarah was doubled up on two chairs with her head raised but she refused to come out. When the police retreated, she rushed to her mother’s bed and covered herself with the bed clothes.

A woman was called to dress her. Gibson stated that during her time at the house, Sarah’s younger brother William had called daily and Uncle Charles

Sergeant William Morris of the local police gave evidence. He stated the stench of whole house was disgusting. The floor of the room was covered in human soil with foot marks all over. The window was covered in wire netting and iron bars to prevent escape. The furnishings were two chairs supporting a board within the frame of an old bedstead. Water was coming through the ceiling of the room below. Morris was instructed to take the woman, who he described as a lunatic, to the Doddington Union workhouse.

The magistrates consulted for about 30 minutes.

They found the case against the two men unproven and they were discharged. Mary Simpole was remanded to Cambridge Castle Gaol to appear before Cambridge Assizes charged with cruelty.

This distressing and evil affair caused great sensation. As the accused was taken from the court, the police had difficulty protecting her from a hostile crowd. There was a final twist in this sorry story. Before the case could come to court, Mary Simpole died in her cell. An inquest declared natural causes. The body was conveyed back to March for burial at St. Wendreda’s Church.

Frederick J. Wise, a March solicitor, was fully acquainted with the case. He was to have represented the defendant and wrote the following month in mitigation. In a lengthy letter he said, that until her illness, Mrs Simpole had cared for her daughter with regular meals and fruit and washed her regularly. However, the daughter was disposed to bouts of extreme violence and would shred all her clothes to rags until she had none.

Also, she would smash all the earthenware bowls provided for her toilet. It was not until the onset of illness that care was neglected. He said nothing to explain why Sarah’s nails were so extremely long.

A Sarah Simpole, aged 57, was recorded as dying at Camberwell, London in 1865. This may have been in the local asylum.

DECEMBER Gardening Tips Whatever the weather in December, there is always something for the gardener to do. If you have put your plot to bed for the winter then now is the time to consider what grew well, whether you want to try something new, and looking at what the seed catalogues have to offer. Now is also a good time to clean tools, seed trays, pots and other equipment, as it will help prevent any diseases carrying over to infect next year’s seedlings. Also, give the shed a good tidy out and clean.

There is very little that you can plant out at this time of year, but if the ground is not too wet or frozen you can plant bare rooted fruit trees, bushes and canes; plant or split rhubarb crowns; and plant garlic cloves. If you have heavy soil which becomes easily waterlogged, dig a larger hole than necessary and add some sand to the bottom before planting out your garlic.

Other jobs to do this month are: • Continue topping up compost and leaf mould bins, making sure that you burn or discard any plant material that looks diseased.

• If the soil is not frozen, you can continue winter digging - this also helps to expose hibernating grubs, which the birds can then eat.

• Manure the vegetable plot, using well-rotted manure.

• Earth up Brussels sprouts stems to keep them secure from strong winds and remove any brown or yellow leaves; this will prevent the spread of grey mould.

• Make sure your winter brassicas are netted to prevent pigeons eating them, and check for and repair any holes.

• Keep picking leeks and parsnips, but if the weather is very wet check that the leeks are not getting waterlogged and rotting.

• December is the ideal time to prune apples and pears, gooseberries and currants. Autumn raspberries can be pruned right back to ground level between now and February.

Brussels sprouts, winter cabbages, broccoli and kale can stay in the ground, as can parsnips and swedes but they will benefit from a covering of straw to protect them from the colder weather.

However, if there is a chance that the ground freezes solid, they are best lifted.

Hopefully, you will have plenty of crops to store through the winter and it is important that they are stored correctly. Cabbages can be hung in net bags; potatoes in thick paper sacks; carrots and parsnips between slightly moist layers of sand (making sure they are not touching) and, provided pumpkins and squashes have been properly cured, they should keep well if ventilated well and laid on straw or shredded paper.

March Market Place

I

recall to mind the time when the Market Place at March was used on Wednesdays and Saturdays by fifteen to twenty stallholders.

The market was well patronised by the population.

Nowadays all we see are two or three stalls at the most. The drawing depicts the market as seen from the Griffin Hotel in circa 1750.

The market derived from waterborne trade on the river, goods carried on barges to and from places such as Wisbech, Upwell, Ely, Cambridge and Huntingdon. The old course at March formed the town’s principal highway and was a great asset to the town. Nowadays it is principally used by river tourists coming from as far as Bedford and Northampton.

Several dykes linked with the ancient Nene, the most prominent being The Hythe (Hie Dyke) which coursed as far as St Wendreda’s Church.

Barnack stone was brought along it for the rebuilding of March’s ‘old church’ in 1345-6. The dyke entered the Nene between High Street and the library.

The Market Place was founded by a prominent member of the Peyton family in about 1670. As a youngster of twelve, I was fascinated by infantry troops practising bayonet drill on the Market Place, plunging bayonets in a straw dummy which looked remarkably like Hitler! It was good fun!

Lovell and Ward’s shop nearby accommodated members of the Women’s Land Army. Members were collected by farmers at 8am each morning and taken to local farms. Male workers on farms were called up for National Service. The monument was known as the Buttercross. It was pulled down in 1900.

Stay Merry, not Miserable in the Run-Up to Christmas ‘TIS the season to be jolly – but as we prepare for the season of goodwill, not everyone shares the Christmas spirit. With many of us starting the Christmas shopping earlier, there is a fair chance that many of our shop purchases and online orders are beginning to pile up.

So, with gifts galore adding to the decorations, tree, food and drink, December is a time when many of us let our guard down, amongst the excitement leading up to the big day.

For opportunist thieves, visible presents under the tree, open car boots full of shopping while loads are being taken into the house, and even the possibility of an unlocked garage are rich pickings which can turn your Christmas from being ‘Merry’ into ‘Miserable’!

Equally, flaws in home security while out and about visiting friends and family are a beacon to thieves – so always remember to check your alarm and never leave doors, windows or garages unlocked.

Some tips for a safe and happy festive season: • Don’t leave presents in full view – either in the home or on the back seat of the car.

• Shorter days mean a longer time for thieves to be in operation – always lock your car and front door when entering your home.

• Keep a light on indoors and outdoors if you are out visiting friends or family.

• It may be an idea to fit some motion detector security lighting – it won’t just be carol singers who come calling.

• Keep your personal data safe – and securely dispose of receipts.

• If you are expecting parcels or deliveries whilst you are away from home, try and arrange for them to be delivered to an alternative address instead of them being hidden by the bins!

• If buying bikes and / or electronic equipment for Christmas – mark them with your postcode • If using outdoor festive lighting, ensure cables aren’t passed through windows, leaving enough of a gap for burglars to make use of.

• Away over Christmas? – plan ahead. If you’re going away at Christmas, be sure to cancel any newspaper or milk subscriptions. Arrange for a neighbour to park on the driveway to help create the impression someone is home. Do not to leave descriptive telephone answering machine messages like “we’re away skiing for the Christmas holidays”, or post your plans on social media.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, released on December 19th. The First Order now vastly outnumber those willing to take a stand, and with both Han and Luke out of the picture, the onus to make things right falls to Rey, Finn, and Poe. Enemies, long since thought dead, make a return and new legends will be born in this conclusion of the Skywalker saga. We’re expecting epic lightsabre duels and thrilling space battles, as Rey’s journey continues and the ancient conflict between the Jedi and the Sith reaches its climax, marking the end of an era. Tickets are already on sale and kick off with a midnight showing and a triple bill for those who like to unwrap their presents early!

Cats, released on December 20th, sees Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-shattering stage musical transform into a breakthrough cinematic event with an all-star cast, featuring Sir Ian McKellen, Judi Dench, James Corden, Rebel Wilson, Taylor Swift and many more. Based in London’s cobbled streets and alleys, on the night of the Jellicle Ball, Old Deuteronomy (Judi Dench) will pick one cat to ascend to the Heaviside Layer and be born into a new life. The film is directed by Tom Hooper, in his second musical film following 2012’s Les Misérables, and we think this is the ‘purrfect’ addition to our Christmas line-up for musical fans, old and new!
