Welcome to Your July Issue.

Welcome to July’s issue of your favourite community lifestyle magazine. As I write, I’m full of optimism after having recently spent a whole morning visiting a host of shop owners in Bourne. Monday June 15th had been earmarked weeks ago as the day when non-essential retail outlets could re-open after twelve long weeks ‘locked down’. Still very cautious and adhering to the guidelines regarding social distance, we were able to see such relief on many smiling faces, as the light at the end of this dismal old tunnel is starting to become brighter with each passing day.

Yes, it has been hell for many, with redundancies and a likely recession both being a serious threat. However, I have been so impressed with the many ways people in our area have pulled together, sharing and caring, all keen to come out of this horrible pandemic stronger than before. Those cheerful shop owners and customers sent out a message – we are now ready to get back to normal, so let’s keep on our guard, follow the advice and keep caring for each other.

That optimism is tangible and hopefully reflected on many of the pages in front of you right now.

Local businesses have started the slow process of returning to some sort of normality following the recent easing of the ‘lockdown’.

A recovery plan to support the safe and successful reopening of town high streets has been introduced by Fenland District Council to help kick-start the local economy by encouraging customers back to the shops while keeping everyone safe. Now, more than ever, it is time for us all to join together and support local businesses, many of whom have suffered great hardship because of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Day-to-day life won’t be the same as pre-COVID for some time, but we should all try to help in the rebirth of our community.

The government-imposed restrictions designed to safeguard the population since March 2020, have led to changes to our habits, resulting in us all being mainly confined to our homes and – weather permitting – our gardens.

I for one can’t wait to get out and about and hope that when this current crisis is over we remember all those who continued to work to help maintain essential services during its worst days…

Your Garden

July Gardening Tips

J

uly is a joy as you start to pick all those wonderful fresh fruits and vegetables. However, the vegetable patch or allotment is still very demanding, and watering and weeding are key.

Make sure you keep crops well-watered. It is better to water them frequently and generously, as intermittent watering can cause problems with flowers falling, fruits failing to form, skins splitting and premature bolting. Watering at the beginning or end of the day is preferable as the temperatures are lower and the sun not so strong and spreading a mulch will help to slow down evaporation and suppress weeds. Also hoeing is good for water retention as it breaks up the soil and it also keeps weeds at bay.

It is now time to lift garlic; hang the bulbs out in the sun or in an airy shed. Onions also need drying well before they are stored. A few days before harvesting, loosen the soil around the roots, choose a dry day to lift the bulbs and lay them on the ground in the sun. Do not be tempted to store them until they are thoroughly dry as they will not keep as long and probably rot. Also, early potatoes can be lifted and, if you are not using the space for anything else, a green manure can be planted, such as mustard (a fast growing crop), which will help prevent weed growth and can be dug in, when fully grown, to provide nutrients for the soil.

Although it is getting late for sowing and planting, there are still a few crops that can be planted:

• Lettuce, rocket and a variety of salad leaves – succession sow for an ongoing supply in the autumn.

• Fast-growing varieties of peas, beetroot and carrots.

• Florence fennel.

•

Plant out your leeks. Just dib a hole about 150mm, six inches deep and drop the leek into the hole. Water it in and the job’s done. You do not need to fill the holes with soil; enough will wash in with watering and rain. The reason you plant in a hole is to blanch the stem.

•

Plant out cabbage, cauliflowers, Brussels, broccoli and kale for autumn and winter cropping, using the space created by lifting onions, garlic and early potatoes.

• Plant potatoes ready for Christmas. Garden centres usually stock the winter varieties.

Other jobs to do in the vegetable patch: • When climbing beans have reached the top of the canes, pinch out the growing tip.

• Strawberries will finish fruiting so tidy up old foliage and cut off runners or use them to produce new plants.

• Earth up brassicas to give them a firm hold in the soil and give them a top-dressing of nitrogenous fertilizer or an organic liquid feed.

•

Don’t forget to nip off the side shoots of your tomatoes, they appear in the ‘v’ between leaf stems and main stems, and when there are four or five trusses, pinch out the growing tip of the plant to allow the fruit to ripen.

Local History

Victory in Europe Street Party

I

n May 1945 there was a spontaneous outpouring of happiness at the ending of the Second World War in Europe and to celebrate this victory in March, a children's street party was held in Creek Road on Wednesday evening May 19th, 1945 as reported in the Cambs Times.

On the Friday, it was suggested that a further celebratory party for the local menfolk should be organised for the following evening. This was in the form of a street dinner in the road for those that lived between Mr Woodcock's butcher’s shop, on the junction with St. John's Road, through to the junction with New Park. Local ladies, Mrs Blackwell and Mrs Gage were the principal organisers.

The meal was local sausages provided by Messrs. C Woodcock, Whittet & Welcher, who also provided the potatoes, with Mrs Lee providing the peas. Contributions of cheese and biscuits were made by several friends and neighbours. Bread was provided by Mrs S Edwards. The all-important

liquid provisions were ginger wine and some very mature rhubarb wine provided by Mrs Lattimore.

Mr Blackwell was employed by Mr Greenwood of Ramsey and they contributed nine gallons of beer and contributions towards a further nine gallons were made by the neighbours.

About forty men sat down to dine, waited upon

by Mrs S Edwards and Miss C Blackwell. After their meal there was sufficient for about thirty ladies to also participate. Afterwards, cigarettes were freely distributed. Some of the menfolk and helpers can be seen in the photograph.

Then Messrs. Lee and Overland's barrel organ began to play, and dancing commenced. House curtains were left open and the domestic lights illuminated the scene. People from all over the town were welcomed to join in and soon between three hundred and four hundred people were present. Proceedings closed at midnight with everyone departing in a happy mood – as well they might.

Not to be outdone, residents in New Park later held a similar event to welcome home their menfolk from the war.

Consumer Advice Need a Tradesman to Carry Out Work in Your Home? Here’s What You Need to Know

by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades The government’s easing of some of the lockdown measures means that many of our Safe Local Trades members have returned to work; much of it carried out in customers’ homes. Social distancing rules apply in the same way as in other aspects of life as we currently know it. So how does this affect you if you require a tradesperson to visit your property?

In simple terms, you ARE permitted to ask a tradesperson 09:29 to carry out work on your property (inside and out) or in your garden. It is a personal choice on the part of the customer, so long as a few simple rules are adhered to: • As of May 4th, the government guidance is that tradespeople can continue to work, providing they are well, and that they (or no one in their household) has COVID-19 symptoms.

• If your neighbour has tradespeople visiting their home, they are NOT flouting the social distancing rules simply by having work carried out at their property.

• As a tradesperson or cleaner, you should maintain a safe distance (at least two metres) from any household occupants at all times, and ensure good ventilation in the area where you are working, including opening the window.

• Any households self-isolating due to COVID-19, or anyone with vulnerable occupants, cannot re-employ their workers as they risk spreading the virus, according to the government guidance.

• Before attending a job, maintenance workers should contact families twenty minutes before they arrive so homeowners can prepare to keep a safe two metre distance.

• Once inside, they should wash hands for twenty seconds and adhere to the social distancing rules.

• Tradesmen may ask households to leave all internal doors open to minimise contact with door handles.

• Face coverings have not yet been deemed mandatory but can be worn as a precaution.

All our Safe Local Trades members are aware of the social distancing and other rules concerning carrying out home improvements at customers’ homes, and the importance of adhering to them. We would advise customers who are thinking about resuming work in their home to get in touch with the relevant trader through the Safe Local Trades website if they have any concerns.

Spotlight on Wisbech

The Splendours of

T

WISBECH

he attraction of Wisbech is that its splendid architecture can mostly be seen within a few minutes’ walk from the town centre.

In the mid-19th century Wisbech was a prosperous commercial and administrative centre. Local businessmen and merchants either bought or built many of the grand properties that grace the town today.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul is unusual, having two naves and two chancels under the same roof. Nearby is the Wisbech and Fenland Museum, being one of the first purpose-built museums in the country. A short distance away is Wisbech Castle, an imposing villa on the site of earlier fortifications. It is located at the apex of a regency circus of grand townhouses known as The Crescent, Union Place and Ely Place.

Italianate building. Turning left along the river into North Brink one passes the Corn Exchange, with the town council chamber above it, before coming to Peckover House. This National Trust property was the former home of the Peckover family. They were Quakers and great local benefactors. On the bend of the river in the distance is Elgoods Brewery with its magnificent gardens.

Returning through the Old Market to Freedom Bridge, there are views of the quays and former warehouses, the yacht harbour and the working port, where seagoing vessels still discharge their cargoes of timber.

Further down North End is the atmospheric Wisbech General Cemetery, one of the earliest garden cemeteries in the country. This ‘pocket park’ is a haven for wildlife and a suitable place to sit and reflect having toured the town.

Beyond, the towering Clarkson Memorial dominates the skyline. It commemorates Thomas Clarkson, the campaigner for the abolition of the slave trade, who was born in the town. From here ahead on South Brink is the birthplace of Octavia Hill, the 19th century social reformer and one of the founders of the National Trust. A short diversion down Alexandra Road takes in the Angles Theatre, one of the few remaining operating Georgian theatres in the country.

From staff at the local college making masks, to posters and banners created by our extended family, the support has come from all ages, including Eden Rose, aged four, who wanted to lift our spirits during this difficult time.

Eden’s Aunt Sarah, our deputy manager, explained: “She spent many hours sat at her drawing desk completing these posters, she also

stands outside clapping with her xylophone every Thursday to show her appreciation to all the keyworkers!”

We’ve also been supported by our local ‘Blue Light Heroes’, especially our local Fire Service who joined us for #ClapForCarers on Thursdays.

Family is the beating heart of Orchard House, and during these past few months we’ve ensured that our residents and their loved ones have been kept connected with regular FaceTime and Skype sessions and have also created our own bi-weekly magazine. Registered manager Maxine Bain said: “We have wonderful links with our families, and during these last few months, because we’ve put such an emphasis on making sure our residents and families have stayed connected, they are now even stronger!”

Kerry Bell, the daughter-in-law of a resident at Orchard House, praised the care her mother-in-law has received: “The change in my mother-in-law in less than a week is nothing short of amazing. She has dementia and was not eating or drinking properly, not talking, not walking without assistance and just slept all day. The care she has received is exceptional. Her room is homely but functional. She eats and drinks everything. She is talking all the time, she’s awake all day and walking with a stick. She truly has a new lease of life and I put it all down to the amazing care she has received at Orchard House.”

Updating to Windows 10 Windows 10’s May 2020 Update is finally here. However, it may take several weeks (or even months!) before Windows Update offers the update on your system.

“Why can it take so long?” many of my customers have asked.

The main reason that Microsoft rolls out these updates slowly and to a limited number of PCs at first is that it needs to test how the rollout is going. If there are suddenly blue screens, performance bugs, or other problems, Microsoft can “pause” the rollout and fix the bugs before resuming it. Therefore, if the update has not appeared in Windows Update on your PC yet, it’s probably because Microsoft isn’t yet confident that it will work perfectly with your PC. So how do you know if your PC has received the update? Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on your PC. Click “Check for Updates” and if you see the words “Feature update to Windows 10, version 2004”, click “Download and install” under it to install the update.

If you just see a “You’re up to date” message without any information about the new version of Windows 10, Microsoft hasn’t made it available to your PC yet.

Do please remember that before performing any updates to your PC, we really do advise that you back up your PC. This can be done using “file backup”, which

allows you to copy of all the files stored on your PC onto an external hard drive. Please see our article from several weeks ago for guidance on how to do this (also available on our website: www.diamondbyte. co.uk). We would also advise delaying the update if you are working on something important just in case the update goes wrong.

DO PLEASE REMEMBER THAT BEFORE PERFORMING ANY UPDATES TO YOUR PC, WE REALLY DO ADVISE THAT YOU BACK UP YOUR PC If you run into a bug or another problem with the update, it is possible to roll back to your old version of Windows 10, provided you do it within the first ten days after upgrading as Windows 10 will remove the required files to free up disk space on your PC. To do this, go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery. Under “Go back to the previous version of Windows 10,” click “Get started” and click through the wizard that appears.

If you don’t see this option here, you, unfortunately, can’t go back to your previous version of Windows 10 because its files have been removed from your PC. If you do experience any problems, please contact us.

FENLAND ACTS TO ENSURE SAFE RE-OPENING OF HIGH STREETS A recovery plan to support the safe and successful re-opening of Fenland’s high streets was put in place in June as the district took its first steps towards getting back to business.

Fenland District Council drew up a blueprint of measures to help kick-start the local economy, keep people safe and encourage customers back to the shops as coronavirus lockdown restrictions eased.

From Monday, June 15th, people have been able to visit non-essential retail outlets such as clothing stores and charity shops, which could reopen if COVID-19 safety guidelines were met.

In the first phase of its plan, the council introduced a range of visual measures in and around March and Fenland’s other town centres, such as pavement markings, street signage and banners, to help shoppers observe social distancing.

Signage was being installed at car parks, bus stops, and busy or narrow footways, to complement measures from local highways authority, Cambridgeshire County Council.

There was also additional cleansing of town centres, council-owned public toilets and public open spaces, and council officers were set to regularly patrol each of the towns to offer guidance to shoppers and respond to any concerns.

The measures will be reviewed on an ongoing basis to ensure they remain relevant, with changes being made in response to public concerns or suggestions and business need.

“We welcome funding from the Government to start the careful process of reopening our high streets and look forward to working with businesses to make this happen, with customer safety as a top priority.”

Cllr Ian Benney, the council’s portfolio holder for economic growth, added: “Essential shops, such as supermarkets and pharmacies, have already shown that while safe trading is challenging, it is achievable.”

He added: “As we get used to a ‘new normal’ on our high streets it is also more important than ever for communities to shop local. By choosing to spend your money in a small business you are helping to support and protect our local economy.”

The council is also working with businesses to help identify areas where it can further support business recovery. Local businesses and market traders are being contacted, and a survey has been launched, to gauge the level of support needed.

SUMMER CONCERTS: NEW DATES CONFIRMED FOR 2021 The coronavirus pandemic has caused the cancellation of live shows at Newmarket Racecourses this summer.

The Pussycat Dolls concert, scheduled for July 17th is a casualty as are the Jack Savoretti and Alfie Boe concerts set for August 7th and August 14th, respectively.

New dates have been confirmed for 2021 with the appearance of The Script at Newmarket set for June 18th, Rick Astley on June 25th, and Bryan Ferry on July 16th.

GRANTS PAID TO SMALL BUSINESSES Fenland District Council has paid out the first grants from its new Local Authority Discretionary Grant Fund to help support small businesses during the coronavirus crisis.

The council has been allocated £985,000 from the Government for the fund, which aims to provide extra support to small and micro businesses which missed out on the earlier premises-based funding.

The experts at Resume.io sought to find how much money a person makes on average, based on their name. They looked at the most popular baby names from the year 2000 and used a ‘ValueMyName’ tool (which calculates the average salary of the person with that name) to see what recent graduates of today can expect from their pay cheques.

When it comes to masculine names, it has been revealed that David earns the highest pay cheque – around £41,617! So, if that’s your name and you just got out of university, you are one of the lucky ones! Second on the list is Charles which could help a recent graduate earn approximately £40,890 a year from their chosen career.

When it comes to feminine names, Lily seems to be the most valued name on a CV, at approximately £30,821. Following close is the name Anna, with £30,522, and Elizabeth, with £29,882.

The research shows that if your name is Reece or Connor you are likely to earn less than £25,000/ year, making them the least successful masculine names for recent graduates.

When it comes to feminine names, Paige is deemed the least successful earning on average only £20,190 a year.

SHOPPING TOPPED THE 'MISSED LIST' IN THE EAST A nationwide survey revealed that 61 percent of East of England residents missed shopping the most during the coronavirus pandemic.

Wall's Pastry commissioned the online YouGov survey, which reached more than 1800 members of the public, to discover what people have missed from their everyday lives during lockdown.

While a high number of people surveyed said they are missing shopping and leisure activities, the expected majority (80%) missed seeing friends and family, while 58% listed visiting a restaurant or pub in their top three.

Results also showed that nationwide, 47% of Gen Y and millennials (25 to 34-year-olds) and 45% of baby boomers (over 55s) were missing hair and beauty treatments the most, with more than half of the votes from women (51%) and more than a quarter from men (33%).

n July 6th we celebrate Children’s Art Day. This year more than others we have seen the imagination and power of children’s artwork.

From rainbows placed in windows to thank the NHS during the pandemic to the wonderful pictures received by the police and other key workers, children have certainly played their part in lifting the spirits of the nation.

Most children love to draw and as many parents we have struggled to see what (to us is a scribble) the picture is supposed to be of. Trying to keep a straight face when presented with a page of people who resemble aliens and being told that the one with the big head, short arms and legs and towers over the house is actually you is something we have all done.

The fridge is covered with drawings (now from grandchildren) and there are boxes in cupboards and lofts filled with pictures from our children’s school days.

It’s fascinating to get an insight as to how children view the world. It’s a well-known fact that children

use drawing as a way to express feelings, and emotions. And how they depict a holiday, day out, or event is not always how we have preserved it, but they use art as a way to express situations in a way many of us have forgotten.

When they progress on to making objects the fun can really start. We had a candle stick holder made of clay that to say the least resembled something else but had pride of place on the mantelpiece and was a talking point for all our family and friends!

Like most parents I cannot bring myself to throw my children’s masterpieces out even though they are more than thirty years old. At Christmas we still have decorations to put on the tree made out of the cardboard from a toilet roll and the fairy has also seen better days but they are part of our family’s memories so whilst they may now be faded and falling apart they will still be brought out every year.

So I wonder, in years to come when the little ones are grown up, will they will still have the drawings from 2020, and be able to tell their own children of what happened and how they used art to lift the spirits of their families, their communities and the whole country?

Keep Active with Oaks: Judith Says Go For It!

imple strength and balance exercises twice a week are proven to keep you stronger for longer and ready to enjoy the great things you like doing when life returns to normal.

Cambridgeshire County Council is encouraging people to keep active at home, so they’ll stay strong, steady and be able to keep doing the things they enjoy – for longer.

Judith (70) has been doing ‘Keep Active with Oaks’ classes every day during lockdown since finding them on Facebook (the link is available via the council’s Be Well website www.cambridgeshire. gov.uk/strongerforlonger) Judith is waiting for a knee operation, and admits that with the way things are at the moment it’s sometimes hard to get out of bed, but doing the exercises with Lou from Oaks Activities sets her up for each day and puts a smile on her face.

Judith said: “I use a walking stick at the moment, and can only walk so far, so exercising at home is the perfect solution for me, and Lou manages

to cheer me up with her new routines every day.

I have a good laugh and I work hard. I used to go to keep-fit years ago and every class was the same, but with Lou each class is brilliant.

“I like the 9.30am class but sometimes it doesn’t suit me to do it then, so I watch it back and do it later. I enjoy watching the other classes too, even if I can’t do all the exercises!

“If anyone is thinking about taking part but hesitating, my advice is to go at your own pace, listen to your body – and go for it!”

STRAWBERRY ICE LOLLIES The kids will love these (adults too!) and they are so simple to make! Perfect for those sunny afternoons spent in the garden...

Method

Ingredients

150g fresh strawberries 90g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 500g tub of low-fat natural yogurt 100g melted white chocolate 60g sugar balls or strands

You will need 6 or 8 ice lolly sticks

Mix in the low-fat natural yogurt. Pour into the ice-lolly moulds and freeze. Once frozen, take them out of the moulds and dip the tips of the lollies in the melted white chocolate, then quickly dip them in the sugar balls or strands. Serve as soon as they set!

Tip: You could swap the strawberries for other fresh berries like blackberries or raspberries instead!
