Welcome to October’s issue. Just when some of us thought it was safe to call ourselves “empty-nesters” as our last teenagers head off to university, a warning has been issued, claiming that the present financial uncertainty has prompted almost 60% of UK students to consider dropping out of their university degrees. With some students returning or going to university for the first time around now, pressure and financial support group SavetheStudent claims that increasing numbers are deeply concerned their finances won’t stand the pressure of such uncertain times!

Oh well, there will be plenty of jobs around the house and garden to keep them busy...oh no, they’ve already been done during the lockdown.

Brace yourselves, “Bank of Mum and Dad”!

Anyway, as ever, there’s plenty here to keep all of your family informed and entertained, and don’t forget to change your clocks (“Spring forward, Fall back”), as we lose the hour on Sunday October 25th.

I’ve just been looking at my comment from last October and reminiscing about how different things were then.

I wrote about the anticipation of starting the run-up to the end of the year and people getting ready for Hallowe’en, Bonfire Night and Christmas and New Year.

What a difference a year makes. COVID-19 was an unknown illness to most of us then but what an impact it has had on our lives in 2020. Further restrictions on social gatherings have recently been brought in and the prospect of another lockdown in the coming months hardly fills one with great anticipation.

However, some of the normal autumnal things remain constant such as the ever-changing colours of the Fenland landscape and skies as the seasons change which I for one enjoy.

We’ve also recently seen some well needed sunshine which seems to be nature’s way of trying to put a smile back on our faces.

Let’s hope we can all see out the rest of the year safely and look forward to better months ahead…

October Gardening Tips

L

et’s hope October brings us some fine weather to start clearing the garden or allotment and preparing it for the colder months ahead.

In fact, most of the work this month involves clearing the plot, plenty of digging, and composting debris. Rough dig over heavy ground and leave it to be broken down by the frosts. Keep off the soil if it is wet and do not be tempted to dig if it is frozen.

Remember... clocks back on October 25th!

Harvest or protect any remaining crops that are susceptible to frosts and clear away any remaining debris and place on the compost heap: the larger the quantity, the better as this helps the heap to warm up and accelerates the rotting process. It is advisable to shred or pulverize thick, woody stems such as sweetcorn, beans, and brassicas so that they decompose more quickly. Do not put any diseased foliage on the compost heap; burn or discard it. Lift main crop potatoes before the end of the month and then store in a cool, dark place: I went to the chip shop and asked them for their used paper potato sacks.

October is perfect for dividing large oversized crowns of rhubarb. If established plants are left indefinitely, they do eventually produce less each year. Cut up and divide the crowns into good sized pieces, making sure each has signs of dormant buds and, as it is not a fussy plant, it can be planted almost anywhere, so long as the ground does not get waterlogged.

It is also the perfect time for moving or planting new fruit bushes and trees.

Bare-rooted trees will benefit from the warmth still left in the soil.

Crops that can be sown this month are: • Early broad beans.

•

Japanese over-wintering onion sets.

Although large onion sets look stronger, small or medium ones are less likely to bolt in the spring.

• Last chance to transplant spring cabbages – be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves.

• Plant garlic.

• Broad beans – early varieties should overwinter.

Other jobs for this month include: • Continue to earth up celery and leeks.

• Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd.

• Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries.

• Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas – leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould.

• If you have not already done so, earth up or stake (or both) Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants.

• Pick the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana – this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening.

• Cure pumpkins and squashes – cut and leave them to dry out in the sun; it hardens the skins and they will keep for longer.

• Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost.

• Remove runner bean canes; if left in the ground they will easily rot.

Swimming in March

Part 2: The Post-War Years

by Richard Munns (on behalf of March & District Museum) tenders was then followed and that of W&C French Ltd for £58,888/13s/1d was accepted. The other tenders varied from £6034/4s/1d to £76,825/0/0d.

A loan of £61,000 was obtained from the Ministry of Housing and Local Government with a contribution of £3750 from Isle of Ely CC and £3600 from the March Homecoming & Memorial Fund.

On November 10th,1964, Mr E A Blades, formerly pool manager at Whittlesey, was appointed swimming pool superintendent, the appointment to be from February 1st, 1965. An advertisement dated May 11th, 1965, in the Cambs Times gave the opening of the pool as Wednesday, May 15th, 1965 with the opening times and admission prices.

These were adult (single entry) 1/6, child (single entry) 9d, adult (season ticket) £2, Child (season ticket) £1, adult (spectator) 1/-, child (spectator) 6d, with children being defined as not having reached their sixteenth birthday.

efore the 1939-45 Second World War, the council had been looking at providing a swimming facility that did not involve swimming in either the River Nene or the Twenty Foot.

Therefore, after the war, the question of the swimming facilities in the town was raised again and a council minute of November 3rd, 1947 showed that a gift of land had been made by Messrs Hovis Ltd adjacent to their Acre Mill.

The question of access and finance caused many delays until November 1st, 1960 when it was recorded that a grant had been permitted for the construction of the facility. The normal process of

After a number of years of use, it was decided that the open-air pool, although heated, should be refurbished and covered. It was closed in September 1983 for conversion work, being totally revamped with a new clothes locker system.

The cost of this conversion was nearly £310,000 and included covered access to the foyer and from the changing rooms, air conditioning and improvements to the water treatment system.

On Saturday August 25th, 1984, the new indoor pool was opened with eleven-year-old Lara Stockbridge, who had got up at 4.30am, being the first swimmer, taking advantage of the free entry on the Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, 690 swimmers took advantage of this and on Sunday another 850 were recorded. The swimming pool attendant, Mr Martin Calvert, said that at 2pm on Sunday they had to stop people entering as the pool was full.

When the pool was officially opened it was named The George Campbell Indoor Pool, after the late councillor who was so instrumental in the provision of the original, open-air, pool in 1965.

CHANGES TO VAT FOR THE BUILDING INDUSTRY

This month, Paul Rumbellow, FCCA, looks at the long-awaited domestic reverse charge scheme and its implications for the building and construction industry.

Why has it been introduced?

D

ue to come into effect in October 2020, but now postponed (again) until March 1st, 2021, the VAT domestic reverse charge for building and construction services will significantly change the way VAT is collected in the building and construction industry.

Already more commonly referred to as the domestic reverse charge (or the reverse charge), the new scheme will mean the customer receiving the service will have to pay the VAT due to HMRC instead of paying the supplier. It will only apply to individuals or businesses registered for VAT in the UK – not consumers.

How will it affect you?

HMRC says it will combat fraud, whereby construction businesses charge VAT for the services they supply but then disappear without paying their VAT bill – essentially taking with them a five percent or twenty percent additional profit that doesn’t belong to them. By moving the VAT charge down the supply chain, HMRC intends to make this kind of fraud impossible.

The introduction follows the success of similar, although not identical, reverse charge schemes for the likes of mobile phone and computer chip retailers, and wholesale energy suppliers.

This is a big change to the way VAT is handled in the building and construction industry. If your business will be affected and you would like more guidance on this scheme, please get in touch.

This will affect you if you supply or receive specified services that are reported under the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS).

Those supplying construction services to a VATregistered customer will no longer have to account for the VAT. Instead, the customer will account for the VAT (that is, it will be considered input tax for them, as if they’ve made the supply to themselves).

So, for services they provide, sub-contractors will require the contractor employing them to handle and pay the VAT directly to HMRC.

Stop The Spam And Put An End To Unwanted Text Messages

by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Whether it’s ‘your bank’ asking for verification of personal details or a message to say you have won a competition prize – unwanted texts can be annoying and sometimes worrying.

However, there is now a new service which allows you to report spam texts directly to your mobile phone provider. All operators now use 7726 as the short code to report spam texts, and it is free to use.

All of the UK’s mobile operators worked together to deploy a tool which collates all the information from the 7726 short code in real time. This means they can take early action to block numbers that are generating spam on their networks. They can also use this information to inform the regulators.

You can report spam texts directly to your mobile phone provider free of charge by forwarding the text message to 7726.

While scammers are getting more cunning at making a scam message look like the real thing, there are some signs you can watch out for. Here are some great tips from Which?

Unexpected contact: Think about how that organisation normally contacts you and if it isn't via a message, contact them directly to check if it's legitimate. A genuine organisation will never contact you out of the blue and ask you to verify your details, request personal or banking details or tell you to transfer money via a message.

Check for spelling or grammar errors: Genuine organisations will rarely, if ever, make glaring spelling mistakes or grammatical errors, and if so, it will usually be an isolated incident. If the message doesn't look professional, it's probably a scam – even if it drops into a message chain from your bank.

Don't follow any links: If you follow a link in the message, it could send you to an imposter website set up to steal your money or personal data. In some cases, it could even infect your smartphone with malware.

Always look up an organisation's contact details independently and get in touch to verify the message.

Don't share personal information: If you think you've been targeted by a scam message, don't share any personal information, your banking details or PIN. Legitimate organisations, such as banks or HMRC, will never ask for your personal or banking details through a message or text.

Cloud providers store your files, photos etc to an on-line location, thus offering an alternative backup to conventional methods of file storage. But websites can get hacked and whilst it’s easy for us to blame corporations for poor security and hackers for maliciously attacking websites, there is often a third party at fault in these attacks: us, the users.

So do bear in mind the following tips which will help boost your own data security in addition to that offered by whichever internet cloud service provider you use.

FENLAND TOWNS BID FOR £MILLIONS WORTH OF INVESTMENT

Preparations are underway in Fenland in a bid to secure millions of pounds worth of investment into the district’s four market towns.

The Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority, led by Mayor James Palmer, recently agreed to more than double the amount of investment for its Market Towns Programme – with £13.1 million now available to inject into the region’s market towns.

The Combined Authority funding has been put on the table to support the delivery of eleven market town Masterplans, with around £1 million being ring fenced for each of the district’s Growing Fenland Masterplans for March, Chatteris, Whittlesey and Wisbech.

Towns are now being invited to submit bids for the Combined Authority cash to help them unlock their potential and bring their ambitions to life.

The Growing Fenland Masterplans each contain a number of proposals to maximise regeneration and make the towns more vibrant and attractive places to live, work and visit.

Councillor Ian Benney, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder for growth, said: “The Combined Authority’s investment strategy is enabling government resource to reach right into the heart of our region, creating and delivering Masterplans that will help our market towns to thrive for years to come.

“Our Growing Fenland Masterplans have identified what our towns need most and revealed huge opportunities for sustainable growth, better transport, improved accessibility and more skills training across the board. Hopefully we can secure some of the funding available and work with the Combined Authority to help turn ideas into reality.”

CHARITY SEEKS LOCAL READERS Schoolreaders – a charity which seeks to improve childhood literacy and thereby life chances by providing volunteers to listen to primary aged children read on a one-to-one basis – is looking for volunteers in the March and Whittlesey areas.

Emma Ward, of Schoolreaders County Team, Cambridgeshire, said: “We are trying to get more volunteers in place and ready to start as soon as it is safe to do so. Volunteers are matched with schools according to how far they are prepared/ able to travel and the hours they can offer.

“Our reading volunteers are going to be desperately needed following the coronavirus pandemic. Thousands of children won’t have had enough reading practice during lockdown. In a normal year, one in four children leave primary school unable to read well.

“Most children will have missed a term of school, so the reading gap is now even wider. Children who struggle with reading are more likely to live in poverty and be unemployed as adults.

“Schoolreaders needs more volunteers in your area to support children’s reading and prevent them falling further behind. If you want to make a difference to a child’s life, apply to become a Schoolreader. No qualifications are needed; just a love of reading and some spare time each week.”

PHIL TAKES OVER AT EACH East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) has named Phil Gormley as its new chief executive.

He started his tenure at EACH last month, joining from Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) where he was responsible for inspecting and reporting on the efficiency and effectiveness of police forces and fire services in the north of England. During the COVID-19 pandemic he has also provided advice and support to the Norfolk Resilience Forum.

Mr Gormley has worked at board level for the last seventeen years and is best known to people in East Anglia for being Norfolk Constabulary’s Chief Constable between 2010 and 2013. During this time, he helped develop one of the most advanced programmes of collaboration with Suffolk Constabulary.

John Pickering, EACH chair of trustees, said: “Now more than ever, we need strong, strategic leadership to take the organisation forward. We undertook a rigorous selection process to ensure we appointed the right person and I’m delighted Phil has joined us.

“Phil offers huge character, high energy and strong leadership. He has extensive strategic experience and has operated at board level in a range of challenging and complex environments.”

He thanked Tracy Rennie for her role as acting chief executive since the retirement of Graham Butland last October. She will now return to her role as deputy chief executive and director of care.

Mr Gormley said: “I’m delighted to have been appointed as CEO for EACH. It’s an organisation I’ve admired for many years and I feel privileged to be joining such a brilliant team of people, and to be given the opportunity to help make a contribution to their vital work.”

POPPY APPEAL A small Lincolnshire business, specialising in delicate crocheted hair accessories, has turned its hand to making hundreds of crocheted poppies to raise money for the British Legion Poppy Appeal.

For the past six years, Ethel & George has raised thousands of pounds for the appeal from the sale of poppies with all profits from each sale being donated. With the support of local businesses this year, the intention is to raise in excess of £1000 for the charity.

PUMPKIN SOUP With autumn underway and Hallowe̛en just around the corner, it just had to be a pumpkin recipe didn̛t it?!

Method

1 Preheat the oven to 220ºC/Gas Mark 7.

2 Place the pumpkin, carrots and onions in a baking dish or roasting tin. Drizzle with the vegetable oil.

Ingredients

3 Bake in the preheated oven for forty minutes, until soft but not blackened.

Serves 6

750g pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cubed 2 carrots, coarsely chopped 2 onions, cut into wedges 2 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil 1 large potato, sliced 1 litre water 2 or 3 cubes chicken stock, crumbled 250ml double cream 1 /4 tbsp ground nutmeg, or to taste 1

In a large saucepan over a medium heat, bring the water and crumbled stock cubes to the boil. Cook the potato in simmering water until soft, for about twenty minutes.

Combine the potato and water with the roasted vegetables and puree in a liquidiser or food processor until smooth. Return to the pan over low heat and stir in the cream, nutmeg, pepper and salt. Heat gently, then serve with some crusty bread.

Helpful tip: Sugar pumpkins are similar to the large orange pumpkins you find during Hallowe’en but they are smaller, sweeter and have more flavour – optimal for this or any other pumpkin recipe.

“Chat over a cuppa” with local photographer James Cook

James Cook is twenty-six and has lived in March for about twenty-one years. His interests include motorcycles, gaming, photography and editing, films, basketball, and spending time with family and his partner Zoe. He is currently the gym/ leisure manager for The Oliver Cromwell Hotel’s gym and pool facility.

In his spare time away from work, James loves to do photography, About three years ago he was diagnosed with depression and anxiety and needed to find something that would get him back out of the house and to also keep his mind busy.

Photography made a huge impact on his wellbeing, enabling him to block out all the bad and focus on all the good in the world. His main areas of interest within photography are wildlife, nature, landscapes and buildings and he has recently started doing odd sessions for friends and family and submitting photos to local magazines.

Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood?

I was born in Peterborough, lived in Whittlesey for a short time, and then moved to March when 40

I was about five years old. My favourite childhood memory would be either any of my childhood holidays or playing with friends.

Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why?

I would say my mum had the greatest influence on my life, she has taught me a lot over the years and has helped shape me into the person I am today.

Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why?

I would say Dwayne Wade from the Miami Heat and Michael Jordan. They were my basketball heroes growing up and who would not want to meet their favourite sports stars?

How would you describe yourself in only five words?

Five words to describe me would be kind, organised, caring, focused and hardworking.

ctober is the month when we celebrate Hallowe’en. This year may be slightly different with social distancing etc, but that shouldn’t stop the traditional treat or treating and dressing up as scary ghosts and ghouls.

Hallowe’en is an ancient event that can be traced back in England to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain.

This originates from an ancient Celtic spiritual tradition. In modern times, Samhain (a Gaelic word pronounced ‘sow-win’) is usually celebrated from October 31st to November 1st to welcome in the harvest and usher in ‘the dark half of the year.’ In times gone by people believed that at this time barriers between the physical world and the spirit world would break down, allowing more interaction between humans and ghosts and ghouls.

Gradually the celebrations changed to what we now have, and the costumes are worn to scare people, but originally, they were worn to ward off the evil.

This year Hallowe’en falls on a Saturday so that gives plenty of time to get those costumes sorted and faces painted ready for dusk to fall so you can go out trick or treating. Nowadays the shops are full of elaborate costumes but years ago an old

sheet with holes cut out for the eyes was good enough for any scary ghost.

I can remember one year opening the door and looking down to a tiny child aged no more than three draped in a sheet. All I could see were two big eyes looking up at me. Bless them they had no idea why they were there and dressed so strangely or why their Dad was taking them to people’s doors and knocking saying, “Trick or treat”. The look soon changed when I showed them a big tin (no plastic containers in those days) of sweets wrapped in shiny wrappers. A hand suddenly whipped out from under the sheet and I was amazed at how many sweets such a little hand could grab in one go. As with most things now the excitement and magic has slightly faded as the event has become commercialised and the trick part has all but vanished. But it’s still a fun evening for those who wish to take part.

People decorate their houses with elaborate cobwebs and even projectors that light the house up with ghosts etc. Pumpkin sales rocket and paths and gardens are lit up with scary carved faces lit up with candles placed in the pumpkin to give an eerie effect.

So this year if you are celebrating, have a great time but remember that for some people it can be scary having people knock at their doors when it is dark so only go to homes that are decorated or belong to family and friends who are expecting you.

Keep safe and don’t get too frightened.

National Arts in Care Homes Day recognises the importance of ‘the creative arts’ in social care and the physical and psychological benefits that incorporating Music, Drama, Comedy, Poetry, Creative Writing, Dancing, Arts and Crafts into residents’ lifestyles can have.

This year’s theme is ‘Creative Communities’, and Orchard House is definitely a creative community.

Providing extensive access to ‘the creative arts’ is really important to us here at Orchard House as we recognise their holistic benefits and impacts. The residents enjoy interacting with each other, they love a cup of tea and cake chatting about families and their lives before they lived at the home. The sense of community we have here amongst not only the residents, their loved ones and our team is such a crucial and important part of what makes Orchard House a home.

With ‘Creative Communities’ as this year’s theme, Orchard House decided to come together to celebrate the arts by putting on an autumn-themed Arts Exhibition which they have been working on throughout September.

They have created numerous artworks including a large autumn tree displayed in Reception, autumn garlands to hang around the home and some lovely canvases.

So far, the residents have thoroughly enjoyed the themed sessions. Evelyn commented, “I’ve enjoyed the arts and crafts; it’s good exercise for my hands.” Another eager participant who enjoyed the theme was keen gardener Tony who said, “I enjoy pottering about in the garden and I’ve also enjoyed doing the themed arts and crafts as I like colouring and painting. “ OCT OBE R 2 0 2 0

Stamford Shakespeare Company (SSC), with its open-air theatre at Tolethorpe Hall, has launched a campaign to ensure its survival.

S

tamford Shakespeare Company (SSC), with its open-air theatre at Tolethorpe Hall, has launched a fundraising campaign to ensure its survival. Its aim is to raise crucial funds to keep the theatre company afloat and to ensure the summer season of plays can continue next year.

The impact of Covid-19 on SSC has been enormous.

The Theatre and Hall were closed in March this year and the Company has lost a forecasted £240,000 worth of ticket sales. As a charity who receive no funding from any arts organisations or formal sponsorship, SSC relies on income from tickets sales to fund the productions, maintain the beautiful grounds and upkeep the Grade II* listed Elizabethan Hall. The future of SSC is now at great risk.

We have been putting on Shakespeare plays for over fifty years and we are determined that Covid-19 will not put an end to this, but without the help from the community, we will not survive.

We are enormously grateful to our patrons and overwhelmed by their continued generosity and kindness. We now need you more than ever.”

Although the government lifted some of the restrictions on theatres, allowing outdoor venues to re-open with social distancing in place, SSC have not been able to rehearse, they have not finished the construction of their sets nor the costumes for the actors; therefore, 2020’s productions could not proceed.

Caroline Stephenson, Chair of SSC Board of Directors, said: “We are all so lucky to have this theatre on our doorstep. To date, we have welcomed over a million audience members, to share experiences with friends and family through theatre, giving volunteers a place to be valued, and inspiring young people to dream big. Losing this wonderful, unique and special place would leave a void in our community.

Dangerous Times

T

he illustration shows old cottages overlooking the river near the bend on Elwyn Road. Built in about 1800, the cottages were pulled down in the twentieth century. Families living in them were employed in March, the women in the larger houses in the town and the men on crops and at fisheries in the area.

Working on reclaimed land was a dangerous occupation. At Doddington a man was seen walking around a field which had been drained.

Asked by a passer-by what he was doing, he replied, “There was a horse and its carer here this morning.” The animal and carer had trodden on wet ground and sank out of sight. The carer’s hat remained on the surface where the incident happened. Parts of the field were like quicksand.

In another part of the Fens, deep ploughing brought up a man’s body, almost perfectly 56

preserved by peat and silt. It was thought the man had fallen from a boat centuries ago.

Some years ago, the writer was invited by a Fenman living near Ely to see his collection of rusty swords he kept in his shed. They were found on the site of an ancient causeway which gave access to the Isle of Ely. The weapons dated back to Norman times. William the Conqueror had made it clear to the abbot that if he did not reveal a way into the Isle the abbot would lose all his possessions. The abbot gave way, but several of the king’s men wandered off track and were drowned. Thus, the Fens was the last area of England to fall to the invaders from Normandy.

The keeper of the ancient swords told the writer that when he dies, the weapons are to be returned to the spot where they were found! Dangerous times indeed…
