hat better way to welcome you all, than with a smile?

Mid-May to mid-June every year happens to be “National Smile Month”, one of the U.K’s largest and longest-running campaigns to promote good oral health. Now over forty years old, this year’s events will be taking place between May 17th and June 17th.

In a world where plenty of things seem to succeed in making us feel perhaps inadequate and sometimes sad, it’s worth remembering that it’s always much easier to smile than it is to frown. Remember... life is like a mirror – we get the best results when we smile at it!

Our May issue is hopefully going to fill you all with the joys of spring and those long, warmer days of summer just around the corner, so smile away, and let’s all get ourselves ready for the fabulous long weekend, early next month, to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee!

For many homeowners, this time of year normally necessitates time spent outside to carry out maintenance work on one’s property or garden after the winter.

For myself, this year’s pressing task was to paint the back fence. It will need replacing in the nottoo-distant future but for now my wife and I thought treating it would suffice and help spruce it up for the summer.

We tackled different panels and soon I seemed to have swept ahead in terms of panels completed. Feeling rather pleased with myself I was somewhat shocked a couple of hours later when the fence started to dry, for my handiwork looked a pale comparison to that of my wife’s and needed another coat. Clutching at straws, I suggested that perhaps she had used a darker colour of fence paint, but after checking the tins, unfortunately I had to concede that she had in fact just done a better job and had the honour of painting the decking on her own…

ay can be a month of extremes so be prepared for late frosts, sunny dry spells, and/or high winds. The biggest threat is to the newly emerging seedlings and plants that have recently been transplanted.

If it is hot, make sure they are well watered and give them some shade protection or protect them from drying winds. If there is a late frost, cover your tender crops with fleece, bubble wrap or similar.

Seeds that were sown last month, such as carrots, beetroot and parsnips will need thinning out whilst they are still very small. Once they have been thinned out, water along the row and it is better to water less frequently but more thoroughly, as this gets down to the roots.

Earth up potatoes when the leaves are about 20cm tall; draw up the earth on either side to form a ridge approx. 15cms high and this will protect the foliage from frost and stop the tubers going green. Keep on top of the weeds by hoeing regularly, preferably in dry weather so they cannot re-establish themselves.

Aphids never seem to go away but you can control them by doing any of the following: • Stir together 1 quart of water, 1 tsp of washingup liquid and a pinch of cayenne pepper.

Do not dilute before spraying on plants.

• Peppermint, spearmint, and pennyroyal naturally deter aphids and ants, so plant (or put them in pots) throughout the vegetable plot.

• Plant flowers that attract the pest predators such as marigold and nasturtiums.

• Spray the affected plants with soapy water (diluted washing up liquid) or squash the flies with your thumb and finger.

Or you can buy organic pesticide.

Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous to list, but include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas. Succession sowing ensures that you have a continual supply and not a glut of the same crop and is particularly good for salad crops which you need to cut and use immediately.

Indoors, sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines, and cabbages and, towards the end of the month when the risk of frost has gone, they can be planted outdoors.

Other jobs to do this month include: • Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage.

• Pot on growing plants.

• Put up bean and pea supports.

• Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year.

• Put some straw underneath developing strawberry fruits to keep them off the soil and try to avoid watering overhead to reduce any problems with mildew.

WHY HAVING AN UP-TO-DATE AND VALID WILL IS IMPORTANT

thought this month I would write about the importance of having an up-todate will in place, because if you die with no will in place it will mean that your money, property and possessions will be distributed in accordance with the laws of intestacy and strict guidelines must be followed. Your estate is then dealt with according to these rules which may be contrary to your wishes.

Under the rules of intestacy only married or civil partners and other close relatives can inherit. So cohabiting or common law partners who are not married cannot inherit under the rules of intestacy.

Having a valid will in place protects the most important people in your life because it ensures that those people inherit in accordance with your wishes.

A will is a legal document that sets out your instructions and wishes and what should happen after you have died.

The most common reasons to make sure you have a will in place are: 1) If you have young children under the age of eighteen you can appoint their guardian in your will.

2) If someone is dependent on you, you can say who takes over from you. If you don’t have a will in place, then the family courts would have to get involved and they may appoint someone that you may not agree with.

3) As well as appointing the right person, you can dictate how your dependants are to be provided for financially. You can set up will trusts etc. and for more information on this please contact me.

4) If you have stepchildren, then again you may want to make provisions for them.

5) If you are not married, then you may wish to provide for your partner and make sure they are protected.

6) Avoid family disputes.

7) You can appoint a trusted person to administer your will, more commonly referred to as an executor.

These are just some of the reasons why a will is an important document so again please do call me to discuss further as I am limited to how much information I can give you here. Also having a valid will in place makes things easier for your loved ones at a very difficult time.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T HAVE A WILL? As we reported to you last year, it is estimated that more than fifty percent of UK adults do not have a will.

If a person dies without putting a valid will in place their estate will be dealt with in accordance with the Rules of Intestacy. This means the law decides the following: • Who deals with the estate?

• Who inherits the estate?

• At what age do people inherit the estate?

• Who gets legal responsibility for any children under the age of eighteen?

By not having a will in place the estate may be more complicated and difficult to deal with, causing additional stress and cost to the family involved.

So, this is what could happen without a valid will in place. But having a valid will in place does not only solve these problems, it can also do so much more.

A will can: 1 Reduce the risk of claims against your estate by making sure your assets go to the right people in the right way.

2 Protect your home and other hard-earned assets.

3 Protect an unmarried partner. If you are not married your partner may not receive anything from your estate when you pass away.

4 Save your family stress and money. Without a will your family may need to complete additional forms, undertake family tree research and seek further legal advice.

Increase in the National Insurance threshold and Lower Profit Limit

There had been speculation that the Chancellor would try and make some kind of tax cut to answer his critics that he was not doing enough to ease the cost of living rises. His solution was to announce an increase in the annual National Insurance Primary Threshold and the Lower Profits Limit in his Spring Statement, to take effect from July 2022.

However, the temporary increase in National Insurance rates (the health and care levy) still came into effect from April 2022.

Income Tax Reduction

The Chancellor announced the reduction in the basic rate of Income Tax for non-savings, nondividend income for taxpayers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to 19% from April 2024. This change will be implemented in a future Finance Bill.

Increased Employment Allowance

Employers are able to claim the Employment Allowance which reduces their employer Class 1 NICs each year.

The allowance can be claimed against only one PAYE scheme, even if the business runs multiple schemes. Connected businesses, such as companies under the control of the same person or persons, are only entitled to one Employment Allowance between them.

s it’s nearing six months since Windows 11 was released, I thought we’d take a look at some of its upcoming new features and as well at some that were due to be released with the original version, but which, for various reasons, are still pending release.

Android Apps: These, along with the Amazon App store for them, should arrive in the second half of the year. This will bring the Kindle App and more than one thousand games and utilities with it.

Folders in the Start Menu: Why we couldn’t have had folders in the Start Menu on release day seems like a massive oversight, however over the next few months this should arrive and make managing our apps and shortcuts a little easier.

Improved Account Management: If you want to check on subscriptions for

Xbox, Office etc or change a password, you currently have to open the settings page in Windows 11, which opens a web browser page on Microsoft’s website where you have to log on once more in order to make amendments etc. This is going to change, allowing you to be able to do it in settings, without taking you to a website.

Drag and Drop Support for the Windows 11 Taskbar: You’ll be able to drag files straight to apps on the taskbar, such as Outlook for adding attachments, or image editors like paint or photos to make amendments, which should make working on multiple things at once easier.

User interface improvements: Currently, the pop out section for audio, brightness, Wi-Fi etc in the bottom right-hand corner is a hot mess, so thankfully it looks like this is going to be improved.

Mail, Calendar and People: This update is long overdue! In Windows 8, the in-built Windows Mail app was awful, it got a minor tweak in Windows 10 and is still the same on Windows 11 (we’ve been pushing either Mozilla Thunderbird (free) or Outlook (not free) for years).

Apparently, this update is going to be a replacement and will be offered to both Windows 10, 11 and Apple macOS users.

Hopefully this update will provide a way to back up settings and contact details (i.e., email addresses etc) so that you can transfer them from one machine to another, like Thunderbird or Outlook.

The Start of Spring Sees an SOS for Gardeners to Help the Vulnerable

By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Fears that vulnerable city residents could fall foul of scammers as spring kicks in has led to an SOS for reputable gardeners to lend a hand.

Charities including Age UK are often asked by those using their services to put them in touch with reliable gardening services. However, due to fears that some residents are being scammed by rogue traders who simply knock on doors touting for work, city consumer 15:38 champion Eileen Le Voi, director of Safe Local Trades, has stepped in to try and help.

She said, “Unfortunately, there is no local authority funding to ensure that charities looking after the interests of the elderly and vulnerable have the budget to provide these services – and sadly, too many residents fall foul of the rogues. Safe Local Trades covers a core area of the PE postcode district, from Spalding to St Neots and Stamford to Wisbech.

With regular requests for garden maintenance across all areas, we are currently unable to meet the needs of our elderly customers with their request for a recommendation. This increases their risk of becoming a victim to unscrupulous cold callers.”

Eileen works alongside charities and local authorities who rely on Safe Local Trades to recommend professionals to their users.

She added, “The problem we currently have is that our Safe Local Trades recommended garden maintenance members are so busy that they are unable to take on new, urgent jobs or provide regular garden maintenance across the many areas. Sadly, Age UK had its funding for providing gardening services withdrawn some time ago, and so relies heavily on organisations like Safe Local Trades to step in to assist residents.” She is now appealing to PE postcode gardening businesses, who wish to join existing members to help meet the supply and demand for gardeners.

Matters SCHEME LAUNCHED TO HELP MARCH TOWN CENTRE THRIVE The first of two new grant schemes aimed at boosting regeneration in March has been launched by Fenland District Council.

Expressions of interest are being sought for the council’s Vacant Unit Activation Scheme, which will offer grants to incentivise property owners to bring empty commercial units in the town centre back into use and support revitalisation.

The grant is the first to launch as part of the town’s £8.4 million Future High Streets Fund (FHSF) project, with a Flats Over Shops grant programme to encourage the conversion of upper floors of commercial premises into residential accommodation, to follow later in the year.

The Vacant Unit Activation Scheme, which will offer capital grants of up to £25,000, will support the refurbishment of vacant units with renovations. It is hoped the scheme will reduce vacancy rates in the town, encourage independent businesses and start-ups to rent units and further improve the look of the town centre as other FHSF improvements come to fruition.

The project will deliver five projects by the end of March 2024. They are: • Transformation of Broad Street, to create a welcoming pedestrianised open space in the centre of town.

• Opening up the riverside areas into Broad Street, to improve visibility and access.

EXHIBITION ON TRACK TO BE MAJOR SUCCESS 'Friends of March Railway Station' will be holding an Open Day on platform 2 at the station on Saturday, May 21st, 10am-2pm, where the principal feature will be a display of model railway layouts. Admission is free.

Among the guests on the platform will be the ‘B17 Steam Locomotive Trust' who will talk to visitors about the LNER’s B17 express passenger locomotives and progress on the scheme to build a new example.

Last time this event was held, one of the attractions was an attempt to lay on the platform surface a rectangle of small coins. This stimulated some curious visitors to bring collections of current coins, old £sd and foreign ones to add to the carpet of coins on the floor. Eventually quite an impressive display was accumulated and one old Edward VII penny of 1907 was later sold for a modest sum on e-bay to a collector in Lancaster.

This year, the attraction will be repeated and some generous donations of small coins have already been received to stimulate the event. The Trust will gratefully accept that small, half-forgotten collection of coins gathering dust in your sideboard drawer!

Some time ago, a set of original LNER locomotive buffers was donated to the group. Recently an appeal has been launched to dismantle these buffers, restore and paint them before they are fitted to the front of the new locomotive. All receipts from this collection of small coins will be used towards funding this specific project.

Active Fenland, which provides a range of sports and physical activity sessions across the district, has launched a new Wellbeing Walks scheme. It is part of the new Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Wellbeing Walks scheme which is part of the wider national Ramblers Wellbeing Walks network.

The group walks, which will all be led by trained Ramblers volunteer walk leaders, will all be specially designed to be short (thirty-ninety minutes) and over easy ground, so they are ideal if you’ve never walked before. They’re a great way to meet new people and walk in good company, and to give your health and wellbeing a boost.

The, sadly not so, Common Swift

T

he Swift is one of the last migrant birds to arrive. A few will pass through March in late April but the birds that will stay and nest appear in early May, seldom before the fifth.

They don’t stay long and are gone by early August. It is not necessary to go out of town to see swifts, they come to us and nest in tiny spaces between tiles on roofs or in any small crack as high as possible in a building.

They fly very high and they are often just sickle shapes swooping above buildings. They do have slightly forked tails but mostly this is often closed to a point. Their body length is 16-17cm (approx. 6½ inches) but their wingspan is 42-48cm (approx. 18 inches) and their wings do not bend at all when they are flying.

Evening, just before sunset, is the best time to look for them because they will go out into the farming areas to feed during the day and soar higher and higher to sleep on the wing. The naked eye is the most efficient way to see them. Trying to follow Swifts using binoculars is not easy because they change direction so often. Later in the summer when their young have fledged, they will form screaming parties swooping around the rooftops.

Over the last few years their population has crashed alarmingly. As our homes are more sealed shut with no gaps in roofs and walls, they have nowhere to nest. New buildings now often have special hollow bricks built in with an entrance just big enough for Swifts to enter. They are loyal to a nesting site and, if it disappears, they move on or do not nest.

Swifts are the ultimate fliers, spending most of their lives on the wing gliding and flying by flapping their 30

stiff wings alternately. They eat, sleep, mate, drink, bathe and collect nesting material on the wing.

Their airspeed can be high enough to allow them to escape from birds of prey.

They collect all of their food from the air funnelling airborne insects and spiders into their open mouths.

When feeding young they will collect food in a throat pouch until it forms a compacted bulge.

If the weather is poor and insects are in short supply the chicks can survive partial starvation for several days or even weeks by going into torpor to save energy.

Swifts never land on the ground voluntarily and find it very difficult to take off again. Their sharp claws enable them to climb and they will cling to walls under eaves to avoid heavy rain.

It will run from 10am to 4pm on Wednesday May 11th, at Stamford Rugby Club Hall on Hambleton Road, Stamford: PE9 2RZ, and I am extremely excited about it. If you are interested in finding out more about local mental health services, charities, and organisations (or just free cake!) then come on down! We will have activities such as seed planting, poetry reading, a music session, and … did I mention cake?

March Maternity Home

By Veronica Nederpel don’t think any of us realised quite what a wonderful place this was until it was gone.

This fine building in Regent Avenue, gifted to the town by members of the Shepperson family, was where many local babies were born. As soon as your pregnancy was confirmed by your GP, you booked into the March Maternity Home for a ten-day stay and a first blood test.

Matron of the home was Miss Wood, feared by many young mums with her straight talking and strict rules. As well as an excellent nursing staff, the home employed many local people.

The home was spotlessly clean, everything boiled and sterilised and floors highly polished. The food was all freshly cooked there and the gardener could be seen growing the vegetables as the laundry blew on the line around him.

The anti-natal clinics were held in the downstairs rooms, so all mums were familiar with the surroundings, no scans in those days, just the ear trumpet pressed on one’s bump, so the doctor could hear the heartbeat.

When the time came for your baby to be born you knew the procedure; husbands were left at the door, and you waved goodbye to them as you climbed the stairs. Our doctors (Hodgson and Seymour) liked to be present at the birth and were called as the birth became imminent.

After baby was born, they were taken straight to the nursery where they stayed for three days, only brought back to mother for feeding. Dads could go to see their baby in the nursery accompanied by a nurse.

On the third day, the baby would be brought into the room at the end of the mother’s bed.

Visiting was quite limited and all mums had to be in bed for this hour.

Great emphasis was on the good care of the new mum, so at this time if baby cried in the night, they were taken back to the nursery to allow the mother to sleep. Mothers also had an afternoon sleep and were woken with a well set out tea tray – luxury really!

The babies were bathed every morning and after about a week you went to watch your baby being bathed, then came your time to bathe your baby under the watchful eye of matron! Your baby didn’t feel like your own until the day you walked out of the door, but at least you knew how to feed, bath and care for your baby and after ten days rest you were ready to face the future!

We had advanced warning that the home was facing closure and that mums would now have to travel to Bowthorpe Maternity Home in Wisbech.

This was distressing news and public meetings were held to try and save this important facility. I went along to the final ‘very heated’ meeting, where we were told that a new maternity home was to be built at Doddington Hospital. This quietened the meeting, but of course it never happened!

I had two babies in March and my third baby was born in Bowthorpe in Wisbech, four very comfortable days there, but this was also closed later. Mums now travel to Huntingdon or Peterborough to have their babies and are mostly home after a few hours.

It is pleasing to see that the ‘March Maternity Home’ sign is replaced by a ‘Shepperson House‘ sign. This imposing building just off the town centre now provides individual flats for our older generation. How wonderful is that? I think many of us look up and admire this building, which holds so many memories.

When money affects mental health

Mental Health Awareness Week is happening between May 9th and 15th and, as ever, it centres on promoting good mental health and wellbeing.

I

t’s a sad truth that money troubles and mental ill-health can often go hand-in-hand – according to the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute, people with mental health problems are three and a half times more likely to experience problem debt.

Almost one in five of the people who seek help through debt charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP) say that mental ill-health was the main reason they fell into debt in the first place.

And it’s a vicious cycle. Fear and worry about finances can exacerbate existing mental health problems, making it harder to get out of the predicament. So, what can be done to break the cycle?

This May, we want to share some tips for looking after your mental health if you’re under pressure with money.

Don’t ignore your feelings. Stress and anxiety, for example, are your body’s way of responding to pressure and they can sometimes be good things as they alert you that you’re reaching your emotional limit. Ignore the warning and you’re likely to feel more and more anxious and irritable. Your mood, self-esteem, relationships and physical health may all be impacted. Mind, the mental health charity, can help you understand what you’re feeling and how to deal with it in a healthy way. Visit mind.org.uk

Talk to someone. This might be a friend or family member you trust, or a helpline. They may be able to point you in the direction of the support you need, or simply be a listening ear to allow you to release the burden you’ve been carrying. You can contact Samaritans about anything that’s getting you down by calling 116 123 or emailing jo@samaritans.org If you’re supporting someone who is experiencing a mental health problem and you need to talk, you can call SANEline on 0300 304 7000 from 4.30pm to 10.30pm daily. If neither of these work for you, there are lots of other helplines and resources that can be found online with a quick search. You don’t have to suffer in silence.

Split up big tasks. If a task seems overwhelming and you don’t know where to start, break it down into easily achievable chunks, and give yourself credit for completing each one. For example, if you want to put together a budget, your first step might be to simply make a list of the different things you spend money on each month. There’s more advice on budget planning at moneyhelper.org.uk

reflect on the good parts. Every night before you go to bed, get into the habit of writing down one thing that went well that day or something you’re grateful for.

Don’t wait to seek help. Sadly, a quarter of CAP clients wait three years or more before seeking debt help, all the while facing mounting pressure on their mental health. There are several excellent organisations out there who provide free debt help, including CAP (capuk. org), StepChange (stepchange. org) and Citizens Advice (citizensadvice.org.uk). Bert Bradshaw:

Pianist and Entertainer

R

obert Woodbine (Bert) Bradshaw was born in Preston, son of a farmer. The family moved to Chatteris during WWI to begin arable farming.

Even in his early years, he was known as a good entertainer. Despite not being able to read a note of music, he had a natural talent to play the piano and organ by ear. He had a fine voice and bubbled with songs and jokes. He was so versatile that he could tailor his jokes and music to any audience. He was equally at home with the Mother's Union tea party or the Rugby Club stag night. You could not help notice him for he weighed eighteen stone. His first public performance was at a dinner in Mepal in 1922.

Bert married March girl Mabel Stocker in 1921 and for many years he lived in Carlton Villa, St. Peter's Road. He and Mabel raised a family of a son and two daughters.

During the economic depression, the family business found itself in difficulties. In 1930, Bert left land work to become a full-time entertainer.

He was a success and during the 1930s, he had nine consecutive summer seasons at the Royal Hotel, Great Yarmouth. He also had numerous engagements at working men's clubs throughout the Midlands. During the blitz, he helped keep up London's morale with appearances in the capital and also frequently at the Southend Regal.

One of the proudest moments of his career came in 1944 at the State Cinema, Grantham where he was introduced to Gracie Fields. Post war, Bert began his longest run of consecutive summer seasons at Hunstanton. These were mainly at the Kit Kat, but he also had two seasons playing the organ on an island in the middle of the boating lake. He

also was a performer at Lowestoft South pier. A contributor to ‘The Stage’ once wrote: ‘The most prominent landmark at Hunstanton is a rugged piece of coast called Bert Bradshaw.’

Bert made many radio and television appearances. His jokes and stories were told and retold thousands of times but they never lost their freshness. He loved to relax beside Fenland waterways with a fishing rod.

Mabel died in May 1973 and a stroke in June 1975 cut short his hopes of appearing in the Hughie Green TV show 'Opportunity Knocks' and thereafter, he took up residence in Fleming Court.

Perhaps his greatest attribute was his kindness to his fellow men. During his career, Bert raised large sums of money with local charity performances. His favoured charity was Cancer Research. By ironic misfortune, when he died on August 6th, 1976 aged 75, his eighteen stone frame had wasted by half from the ravages of that disease.

During his lifetime, Bert had brought pleasure and happiness to many thousands of people, young and old across the social spectrum. A tribute in the Cambs Times concluded – ‘Bert Bradshaw – Rest in Peace. By gum, you did do well.’

Bradshaw Court in Springfield Avenue is a permanent reminder of a much-loved man who was adopted by the town of March.

Equity Release:

The Myths and The Misconceptions!

The most common feedback about equity release often prompts an angry retort, citing it as a con, a scam and a rip off. Social media is littered with comments about companies involved in it as thieves, and that you will lose your home.

T

he actual truth is a far cry from these unfounded comments. Indeed, in the past they were products called Home Income Plans and Shared Appreciation Mortgages that were not fully regulated and generally it is from bad experiences with these now nonexistent products that generally you will find the basis for the negativity towards equity release Today, modern equity release centres around a product called a Lifetime Mortgage. A fully regulated product, under the Financial Conduct Authority, it offers clients over the age of fifty-five who own their home a flexible way to access their property wealth through a cash-free lump sum or a combination of a lump sum and a drawdown facility. You remain the owner of your home and the lifetime mortgage is a first legal charge on the property, just in the same way as a traditional mortgage.

this offsets the impact on the erosion of equity in a property.

My clients initially are concerned that there will not be any equity left in their property and are surprised when they find that with the current interest rates, the amount borrowed will only double in about twenty years! So, if you have heard that the amount doubles every seven years, you are being misled by outdated and inaccurate information.

parkling wines are a very popular choice for many people and make an occasion into an event and an event into a celebration. The popularity of sparkling wines increases year on year, and they offer excellent value.

Numerous countries, globally, have winemakers producing sparkling wines. These types of wines are widely available, and I searched for a retailer that offers a good selection of ‘sparklers’, as well as still productions.

English wine is increasing greatly, both in appreciation and in recognition, gaining numerous awards, both in the UK and abroad. Morrisons: The Best English Sparkling Brut Vintage (11.5% vol), I found to be very impressive.

Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes are utilised, to great advantage, culminating in a grand, finished product.

This brut sparkling wine is stored for several years in cool cellars before being released. The fine bubbles receive much admiration from sparkling wine lovers. A very good floral and citrusy bouquet continues to the mouthfeel and sensation for the palate.

From France, I located Morrisons: The Best Crémant de Limoux (12.5% vol). This brut sparkling wine is made in partnership with Sieur d’Arques, a French winemaking co-operative. Dominant with Chardonnay grapes,

and aged for a minimum of twelve months in the bottle, this ‘sparkler’ is another extremely popular production, indeed, with a good ‘stream’ of bubbles, adored by many. A very good aroma of apple hints extends to the fruity, citrusy pleasures, on the mouth.

Italy is another country with an impressive history for producing sparkling wines. Morrisons: The Best Prosecco Valdobbiadene DOCG (11% vol) has a great number of devotees too.

This production graces dining tables regularly and is very much appreciated and respected, having a good perlage to please the eye, then a most acceptable bouquet and mouthfeel of apple sensations, plus white fruits.

new fast-food business delivering to the March area has got off to a fantastic start; Forbidden Burger Co opened just before Easter delivering meals to homes in the March, Chatteris, Wimblington and Doddington area from its Manea base.

Founder Steve Shipp said: “It has been absolutely mad; the demand has been so great that we had to switch off our systems early at work every night.”

They also have another Forbidden Burger Co branch in Ely where sister business, Inferno BBQ, is also based.

The two men decided to start the businesses during the lockdown with Inferno being opened two years ago and the Ely branch of Forbidden Burger Co in February this year, Steve added: “It has been a bit of a rush and a lot of hard work but we’ve got some great staff and have had a great reaction and reviews from our customers.”

Potato Salad Warmer days can only mean one thing - barbecues! Jersey Royals are firmly in season so give your humble potato salad a crispy, smokey edge with this tasty recipe...

Method

• Boil the potatoes in a pan for around 10 mins or until just tender; drain.

Ingredients Serves 6 1.25kg new potatoes, halved 10g dill, chopped

• If using a gas barbecue, pre-heat to medium-high, or if using charcoal wait until the coals are glowing and the flames have died down. Grill the potatoes for 10-15 mins, turning often, until crisp and golden.

• Mix the remaining ingredients and season. Stir in the potatoes and serve.

CLARION CALL TO HELP READ TO SUCCEED

A

love of reading lasts a lifetime.

Whether reading a recipe to bake a cake, following the news of your favourite sports team, or indulging in an escape from reality with a classic tale of adventure, it’s a simple pleasure that can educate, inspire, or transport you to new places.

Reading is the gateway to unlocking local talent.

When teachers first raised with me the difficulty of encouraging children to read throughout the summer holidays and how many fail to make progress in their literacy skills during this period, I wanted to do what I could to help inspire a love for reading which has always been a strong interest of mine.

Our local Read to Succeed campaign was created and now, seven years on, it’s still going strong. Each year we aim to raise enough money to buy a new summer holiday reading book for every Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire. Children often begin to read more independently around the age of eight or nine which is why teachers suggested Year 4 to receive a new book to take home.

studying for their GCSEs! This year’s theme, in association with the Summer Reading Challenge in libraries, is Gadgeteers. It aims to encourage children to discover the amazing science and innovation behind the world around us.

Last year, Read to Succeed distributed more than 1500 books to Year 4s and even some Year 5s thanks to the generosity of local businesses, charities, councillors and personal donations.

One of our strong supporters is Clarion Futures, the charitable foundation of Clarion Housing Group, which has given us £3000 again this year.

Phil Miles, director of Clarion Futures, said: “We’ve supported​Steve’s Read to Succeed campaign for many years and are proud to be the first to donate this year. Enabling children to continue their learning through the summer holidays by giving them access to new books makes such a difference, and we hope that by supporting this campaign we can help inspire the next generation to get reading.”

MARCH MARLINS Making Waves in 2022

March Marlins Swimming Club is shaking off the adverse effects of COVID and is looking forward to a brighter 2022.

The club lost members during the pandemic but is now looking to once again expand by adding new swimming groups and increasing memberships.

Chair Emma Liversedge said: “COVID placed a big strain on the club. Last summer we did some Zoom training but now we are pulling ourselves back up and are virtually back to where we were before the pandemic.”

March Marlins offers adults and children the chance to learn to swim with them then being

coached to a standard to represent the club and participate in competitive galas. It currently has approximately 135 members, spread over ten groups from minnows and skimmers aged five+ up to Masters’ squads.

Emma said the club is adding two new groups with a new Masters squad with more flexible swim times and an adult progress squad for those who can already swim but who want to improve.

The club’s membership is split approximately fifty-fifty between males and females with sessions being held at The George Campbell Leisure Centre, March three times a week and at Manor Leisure Centre twice.

Emma added: “It is a competitive club and members participate in competitions around the east of England and at Cambridgeshire county events, regional meetings and inter-club competitions.”

The next big local meeting on the horizon is the Fenland Open Meet, which will be held on Sunday, May 29th at Whittlesey.
