Is it really a year since the coronation of King Charles on May 6th, 2023? However, so much seems to have happened since then, especially regarding the health issues of the royal family, as both the King and the Duchess of Cambridge fight their own battles against cancer.

It is often said that we all take our good health for granted and it is only when we, or those close to us, are diagnosed with something potentially life-threatening, such as cancer, that we stop and think just how precious life really is and how every day should be seen as the opportunity to do something special, however trivial or inconsequential it may appear to be!

I know I’m not alone in enjoying the fabulous opportunities that having dogs (or any other pets) can give us, especially at this time of the year, as those long walks easily become such a crucial part of our day, admiring the handiwork of other garden-lovers, and taking in the sounds and scents of our local patch! Enjoy this month, and every day in it.

Unlike many people, I am someone who enjoys driving, particularly at this time of year when the weather is beginning to improve.

Sure, I don’t enjoy being stuck in traffic queues but in general it is something that I find strangely therapeutic. At the wheel of my car, I can listen to discussions on the radio or to some of my favourite songs while I think about what I have to do that day or even occasionally contemplate the meaning of life.

However, one – but not the only thing – that annoys me is the bizarre refusal of some other road-users to use their indicators.

Sitting at a roundabout waiting for the opportunity to drive off in my preferred direction it would be a great help if some drivers actually gave me an insight into what their own intentions were.

I have a few skills, but one I definitely haven’t got is being telepathic, so if you see me heading in your direction at a junction, please let me know where you intend to proceed to. Not only would it be the safest thing for you to do to avert a possible accident, but it would also vastly improve my blood pressure...

May is one of our busiest months, but days are getting longer, giving you more time to carry out all the jobs that need doing.

Warmer (?) weather also favours weed growth (hoe regularly) and a variety of pests – how about planting flowers to attract beneficial insects and pollinators? Some suggestions are marigolds, sunflowers, cornflowers, lavender, sweet peas, and nasturtiums.

Seeds sown last month, such as carrots, beetroot, parsnips, to name a few, will need thinning out whilst they are still very small. Once they have been thinned out, water along the row to help the disturbed seedlings settle back in. When watering young plants and seedlings, water less frequently but more thoroughly, as this gets down to the roots. Also, carefully hand weed between the seedlings to avoid damaging the new seedlings. They may also require protection from very wet weather (or even a late frost) or pests and diseases.

Indoor sowings such as leek, sprouts and summer cabbage can be brought out now but take care to harden off plants that have been grown indoors or under cover before planting in their final growing position. A cheap way to protect tender young plants is to use “bottle cloches”, cutting down the two litre plastic drinks bottles; they are useful for protecting young runner beans and peas. Leeks should resemble a pencil in size. Make a six-inch-deep hole with a pole or similar and pop the leek seedling in and fill the hole with water. There is no need to fill in the hole with soil. This will happen naturally.

Other jobs to do this month include:

• Earth up potatoes; when the leaves are about 20cm tall, draw up the earth on either side to form a ridge approx. 15cms high: this will protect the foliage from frost and stop the tubers going green and poisonous.

• Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year.

• Put some straw underneath the developing strawberry fruits to keep them off the soil and try to avoid watering overhead to reduce any problems with mildew.

• Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage.

• Pot on growing plants.

• Some crops may require a support ready for their growth, such as beans and peas and climbing plants. Ensure it is sturdy enough to take the weight once the fruits have formed, as well as the foliage, and that it can withstand any winds.

• Seeds to sow out are too many to mention, but include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas.

• Try “succession sowing”, a small batch of seeds every two or three weeks, and you should have a steady supply rather than a glut: it will also help to maximise your chances of successful germination.

• Indoors, you can sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines, and cabbages.

Let’s hope for some good weather for growing and planting: enjoy!

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO LOOK BACK TO THE BRONZE AGE

The amazing story of Must Farm in Whittlesey and the insight it gives us into life three thousand years ago puts us on the map as one of the most important Bronze Age sites in Europe. It is a treasure trove of regular discoveries and I’m looking forward to dipping into the new publications that detail the story of the discovery and excavation.

The Must Farm pile-dwelling settlement dates from the end of the Bronze Age (850BC) and the circular wooden houses made from local woodland trees were built on stilts over water but only occupied for a year before they were destroyed by fire. As the buildings burned, their contents dropped into the muddy river below and were preserved, enabling archaeologists to understand how the roundhouses were used, the buildings’ architecture, and what personal items like decorated textiles, pots, jars, utensils, and glass beads the inhabitants owned.

Thousands of objects survived detailing a life where inhabitants ate meaty stews, dumplings and bread, chops of pork, lamb and potentially honey-basted venison. Historic England, Forterra UK, University of Cambridge Department of Archaeology, Cambridge Archaeological Unit and McDonald Monographs have all been involved with these new publications and you can see some of the unique objects uncovered and learn about the excavation and stories that have emerged from the research at a free exhibition at Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery until September 28th.

The Pride in Fenland Awards are a highlight in the calendar and it’s always inspiring and humbling to hear about the volunteers, fundraisers, carers, litter pickers and community heroes they celebrate. Many congratulations to all those who were nominated, an incredible 117 nominations for seventy-nine groups and people who strive to improve our community which shows the strength and depth of commitment in our area and how special so many of our residents are.

Winners are Helping Whittlesey Community Pantry which redistributes food that would otherwise go

to waste (Community Group Volunteers); nineyear-old Shyla Brown who has raised more than £2000 for a friend and his brother who suffer from the incurable degenerative Batten Disease (Young Individual); George Broughton, described as the ‘heartbeat’ of Feed Fenland which provides hot meals to those in need (Individual Volunteer); David Rose for his daily litter picking in Leverington (Environmental Volunteer); Alyssa and Scarlett Bass, aged nine and ten, who have had to call 999 four times for their mum who has complications with type 1 diabetes (Special Judges Award); and Evelyn Hamps (88) for her tireless work over decades looking after the Methodist Chapel in Doddington (Lifetime Volunteer Award); plus runners up: All Seasons, Chatteris; six-year-old Jack Page; and Geoff Howes.

It’s great to get out and about in the constituency and I had an excellent discussion with March Young Farmers at Hall Farm in Guyhirn on their priorities for the future of farming. There were lots of positive ideas and an opportunity to discuss the policy changes I am making to prioritise food production and food security.

How to Spot a Rogue Trader on Your Doorstep – or on that of a Vulnerable Neighbour

Spring is here and many of us are looking to spruce up our property, including the garden, driveway, fascia, and cladding. Whatever the job, big or small, don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be “carrying out similar work in the area”.

Sadly, the 70-79 years age group is one of the most targeted, and according to Age UK, each year, around 1 in 12 (940,000) older people fall victim to a scam. Whatever your age, please be aware of these more common red flags:

• A van or vehicle that has been parked outside the house for some time or which frequently comes and goes.

• Your neighbour being kept talking on the doorstep for what seems an unusual length of time.

• Work being carried out with no obvious signs of health and safety – e.g., workers on the roof with no protective clothing or scaffolding.

• Work that looks shoddy, untidy, or unfinished, even to the untrained eye.

• Multiple ‘workmen’ on site, with frequent engagement with the homeowner with no apparent work being done.

Doorstep rogue traders have a knack of catching people off guard. Remember:

1) Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment.

2) Don’t take their word for it when they claim urgent work or repairs need doing.

3) Do ask them to qualify who they are and to leave you a contact number.

4) Never hand over any cash as a deposit for work which they say they will return to carry out.

5) Feel free to ask to see their credentials and/or examples of their work.

6) Always ask them politely to leave if you feel uncomfortable with their approach.

7) If you want to get rid of them but don’t feel confident in asking them to leave, take a leaflet and report it to the trading standards or 101 if you suspect something isn’t quite right.

So, if you are in the market for a new driveway or patio or are dreaming of a new lawn or garden for the summer, then always use a professional. No reputable tradesperson will come knocking on your door ‘touting’ for business.

CRICKET CLUB HOSTS FORMER ENGLAND STAR

Former Essex and England cricket captain Graham Gooch was the guest speaker at March Town Cricket Club’s annual dinner.

The former opening batsman knocked the seventystrong audience for six with stories of his fantastic career which saw him become the third highest run scorer for England with 8900 runs in a career in which he represented the country in 118 test matches and 125 one day internationals. Members also enjoyed a four-course meal served by Richardson caterers at the event at the club’s March pavilion.

FENLAND BUSINESSES RECEIVE £5K GRANT

Sixteen Fenland businesses have been awarded £5000 each after successfully applying for a Rural England Prosperity Fund grant.

Business expansion, diversification and financial and environmental sustainability projects were among those supported in the first round of grant awards from the Fenland fund.

Many of the projects supported by the grants are expected to lead to new jobs. According to estimates in the grant bids, the total number of new jobs could be as high as twenty-eight.

COUCH TO 5K LAUNCHED IN MARCH

New free fitness sessions in Fenland support people of all ages to complete the ‘Couch to 5k’ running programme and, through a separate class, offer families with young children active fun.

The sessions are the latest offerings from Active Fenland, which provides free and low-cost, exercise and wellbeing opportunities in the district, including walking football to wellbeing kickboxing, badminton to social gatherings with mixed sports and dementia-friendly seated exercise.

RESIDENTS AND STAFF TAKE PART IN WHEELCHAIR HALF MARATHON

A half-marathon of a different kind has taken place in March as a team from Aria Court Care Home took on a 13.1-mile wheelchair walk to raise money for Comic Relief.

There were red noses all round due to the chilly weather but spirits were high as they braved the elements to support Comic Relief and absolutely smashed the challenge in a total time of five hours. The event, which saw residents and staff team up to conquer the total distance with participants taking turns pushing wheelchairs around the halfmile loops at Avenue Park, showed how collective effort can achieve a common goal. The team said they had a lot of fun and enjoyed getting out in the fresh air, ensuring the seated residents were wrapped up warm while those doing the pushing did not overheat. Those who did not take part kept a close eye on progress from the home at Coronation Close in March.

The success of the wheelchair push half marathon was not only measured in miles but also in the generous support from sponsors and well-wishers. Through their collective efforts, they managed to raise almost £200 for Comic Relief, with the promise of more donations still to come.

EXCITING FUTURE FOR Nott Johnsons

Nott Johnsons began by providing coaches for many local group outings, and some school trips, but Eric also started to offer his own day excursions. In 2009, Nott Johnsons began offering coach holidays, alongside the day excursions, and private hire, and also operated a private school contract, taking children to Spalding Grammar and Spalding High School. Kim joins

most of the excursions and holidays, to make hot drinks for customers during the journey, and also manages the office for the business.

Nott Johnsons has established a loyal customer base, and some customers travel on all of the day excursions and holidays offered, with many becoming good friends with each other and feeling part of the Nott Johnsons family.

West End March is an historic area. The original settlement of March around St Wendreda’s had extended by the C13 to form a new settlement, Marchford, around the river crossing and along the north banks of the river. These settlements were linked by the causeway.

The riverside buildings now surviving in West End, formerly Whittle End Drove, date from the C15 onwards. They were the large homes of merchants and farmers, and rows of cottages mainly occupied by agricultural workers, shopkeepers, tradespeople, and craftspeople. Their gardens ran down to the river, separated from the houses by the narrow lane. Whittle End Drove was described in the 1805 Inclosure bill1 as a private road branching out of the Turnpike Road (from Broad Street) near the end of Brooks’s Lane and extending by the ends of the yards or homesteads in Whittle End first west then north to Whittle End Road which ran south from the present Wisbech Road and linked with the Whittlesey road. This area has been changed by the A141 bypass. There are ten Grade 2 listed buildings in West End. The Grade 2 listed2 early C18 row of cottages 52 to 55 West End are now two houses. The soft red English bond brickwork, as seen in the left-hand gable end, is painted on the front wall. The steep pantiled roofs were originally thatched with reeds and there are two chimneys. There are interesting details in the brickwork of the original tumbled gabled ends and the dentil eaves cornice below the drainpipe. Each cottage has one storey and an attic with cat-slide dormer windows with sloping roofs. No.55 has the original segmental arches over the C20 windows and door. The end wall has a blocked window and on the front wall a blocked doorway. There is an additional chimney at the base of the roof. There were houses on this site in 16023 when the land of properties in this part of West End extended to the present Dartford Road. The Shepperd family owned plots of land in this area and this plot was owned by Ralph Shepperd.

There were several public houses and beer houses in Whittle End, some of whose names have been lost. Nathan Gray, the brewer who owned most of the public houses in March, owned this site and its corresponding riverbank in 18404 and had a brewhouse5 used for brewing beer. It is thought that here was a public house. In the C20 there were one or two shops in the terrace.

Cowslips and Primroses

These two plants are looked at together because they are alike and hybridise easily. Garden Primulas or Polyanthus will join in the party producing an infinite variety of similar forms and colours in the red, orange and yellow range.

Both have long tubular flowers that open out to produce five lobes that look like separate petals. The difference lies in how much of the tube opens beyond its calyx. Imagine pulling a cowslip flower out of its calyx and spreading the lobes and it will look like a primrose.

There are two distinct types of flowers within each plant; as shown in the diagram on the right. Plants are either ‘pin-eyed’ or ‘thrum-eyed’ and this sophisticated arrangement prevents self-fertilisation. The flowers have evolved to be pollenated by longtongued insects like bees. The nectar is produced in the bottom of the flower tube and when reaching in for it the insect picks up pollen to take to the next flower visited. If the next flower is the same type exactly the same thing happens but if the next flower is the other type, the pollen reaches the stamens and the flower will set seed. The plant doubly insures itself against self-fertilisation as each type of flower produces slightly different pollen. The ’thrum-eyed’ flower produces heavier pollen that falls more easily into the ‘pin-eyed’ flower to reach the stamens. In contrast the ‘pin eyed’ flower has very light pollen that brushes onto the stamens of the ‘thrum-eyed’ flower. Obviously, this clever arrangement actively encourages hybridisation. Without human interference the hybridisation would be unlikely. Both were common all over the country but near villages and towns they have been dug up to go into gardens where they have encountered cultivated varieties.

Primroses prefer acid soil and wetter conditions and will flower early in woodland before the leaves emerge on the deciduous trees. These conditions are prevalent to the west of Britain. In very mild

areas they will flower so early there are no insects available so they will not set seed at all. In ‘A Winter’s Tale’ Shakespeare writes of ‘Pale Primroses that die unmarried.’ As they are perennials, that will not matter; they will try again next year.

Cowslips prefer alkaline soil, survive much drier conditions and do not like too much shade. They grow everywhere in the east of England but are uncommon in Scotland. Because they are so easy to grow, they have been planted alongside motorways producing swathes of colour.

Before the 1950s both species would have featured in wildflower meadows used by grazing animals but grassland improvement and expansion of towns has seen a 97% reduction in the wildflower meadows of Britain.

STATION ROAD CEMETERY

The March Burial Board first met on May 23rd, 1865 to find a site for a public cemetery. The following month the clerk was asked to write to Mr Vawser asking if he would sell his field in Elm Road (now Station Road). Mr Vawser replied that he would sell it for £830, which the burial board accepted.

On September 4th, 1865, the board’s surveyor, Mr Stevenson, was instructed to draw plans for a chapel. The chapel was designed with two wings separated by an entrance arch. The door to each wing was to be within the arch so that coffins were removed from their carriages undercover, which would have been beneficial in bad weather. The south wing was for Church of England funerals and the north wing was for non-conformists. Over the arch, a central bell tower was included in the plans and in December, it was agreed they should acquire a 24-inch bell from Messrs. Tyler, Warner and Sons of London. John Proctor was the tenant of a farm dwelling and buildings on the site and he was allowed to continue in residence until January 6th, 1866.

foundation stone was to be laid on Tuesday, June 12th, at 4pm. A supper was provided for the workmen at The Griffin the same evening. On August 10th, Mr Broadhurst, the builder, asked for an extension to his contract date as his men were busy with harvest. This was refused. A tender to lay paths round the cemetery for £120 from Mr Dearing was accepted for completion by February 1st, 1867. Dissatisfaction with the progress of Messrs. Broadhurst and Dearing was expressed and the board held an on-site viewing of progress on November 13th.

At 2.15pm on Friday, April 26th, 1867, a service was held at St. Wendreda’s in preparation to consecrate the new cemetery. The Bishop of Ely was present with Mr Charles Bates, chairman of the burial board. The service was taken by Rev J Newby, curate of Benwick. Afterwards the bishop, clergy and congregation proceeded to the cemetery gates, formed up in procession and marched round the appropriate portion of the cemetery chanting psalms. In the chapel the bishop lead the consecration service followed by appropriate singing from the church choir accompanied on a harmonium.

On November 2nd, 1865, Mr Stevensons’s plans for the chapel, cemetery layout and entrance were approved. The cost of the chapel and other works was estimated at £3000. Tenders for the work were placed in various newspapers and architectural magazines with the stipulation that the chapel should be completed by October 31st, 1866. On March 12th, plans for the lodge were submitted and approved.

A tender for constructing the chapel from Messrs. Broadhurst and Dearing of March was accepted for a sum of £1463/2/0d with penalty clauses for non-completion by the due date. It was not recorded when work started but the chapel

The first burial was on the day after consecration when John Billett Junior, aged eighteen, was interred, Burial Register No. 1, just to the rear of the cemetery lodge.

In the chapel archway, an ornamental metal plate had on it the names of the burial board’s members and officials but this has been removed and placed in March Museum for safekeeping together with the ceremonial tools used when the Foundation Stone was laid. The burial board’s minute books, 1865-1928, and plot plans are available for inspection in March Museum as are the full council minutes.

The cemetery chapel, cemetery lodge, gates and walls are Grade II listed buildings.
