I

t seems quite frightening to think that I am writing for our November issue, which means that Christmas and the winter months are almost upon us. For me it has been another busy but exciting month. In October I was prividelged to be invited to the opening of a brand new Italian restaurant in Whittlesey, you can see my report on page 15. I wish Maria and Peppe all the luck in the world, although in truth I know they don’t need it (just taste their homemade pizza, you’ll instantly be a fan). Thank you to everyone who contacted me this month with news stories and events, in truth I don’t think my inbox has ever seen so much activity and it has been a pleasure to hear what’s been happening in Whittlesey. It has meant however, that I have struggled to fit everything into this issue. There seems to be so much happening at the moment, but that is a good thing. Reading this issue, you will be sure to find something interesting to take part in this month, whether it is attending a Wedding Fayre at the Ivy Leaf Club on the 6th of November, or watching the lovely Ferridge’s turn on their Christmas lights in Arnold’s Lane on the 26th of November. I am also excited to bring you an article this month, written by some year six students at Park Lane Primary School. Turn to page 25 for their report on a sponsored walk they took part in. It seems we have some budding journalists in the community (I’d better watch out). On this page you will also see an article about the Whittlesey Transport Strategy. Some of you will remember a questionnaire we placed in a past issue of Discovering Whittlesea and may have wondered what it all meant for us. Behind the scenes there are lots of discussions on how our transport system can be improved and next month we will be bringing you even more information. I can’t sign off without mentioning the Race Night put on last month, in memory of Danny Baxter. The night was a huge success and family and friends managed to raise an impressive £1083.75. Many of Danny’s friends attended the evening, along with his family. Well done to all involved, and a lovely testament to the popularity of Danny himself. I also wanted to say a quick thank you to our lovely photographer Chris, who took my portrait above. Ever the professional, he made me feel very comfortable, even while we had some strange looks from bystanders! Enjoy your November – look out for a bumper December issue.

Whittlesey Festival Schools Art competition

Marija Lysak who organised the competition on behalf of the Festival said: The standard of work was extremely high and the best we’ve ever had, it really was a fantastic opportunity for others to appreciate the creative talents of the young people we have in the community. There was such an interesting variety of themes and techniques used and it was evident that everyone who entered had worked very hard which made it very difficult for the judges to select the final winners. We consider everyone who took part to be a winner and we look forward to even greater things next year. Photographed bottom left: Caitlin Hughes; top middle: Rebecca Adamson; top left: Jacob Beebe.

A Kay word from Mayor

Local news

Here we are again and I’m back tracking through my diary to let you know what I’ve been up to: I finished last time on the day I was due to attend the Cambridgeshire Young People of the Year Awards ceremony at Peterborough Cathedral. Of the ten finalists, and there were two from Whittlesey, any one of them would have been a worthy winner. It was a tough decision and a young man from St Ives was the eventual winner. It was a superb evening in a splendid environment. The presentations to the youngsters that took part in the summer reading scheme took place over two evenings at the library as there were in excess of 200 children that completed the scheme this year. WELL DONE to everyone. The Allotments and Garden Society Show was superb, judging is never an easy job and believe me on this occasion it was no exception. Congratulations to everyone that entered and especially to Tom Owen who won the Best in Show (Adult) and young Jack Mason who won the Best Junior in Show. The Macmillan Coffee Morning on 30 September at Fenland Hall again raised a huge sum for the charity; I know that businesses and organisations around the town and area also held coffee mornings over that weekend for the cause. Well done and thanks to everyone. On Sunday 2 October Martin Curtis, Deputy Mayor, and I represented the Town at the High Sheriff‘s Justice Service at Ely Cathedral. This service brought together those in the County who are involved in the maintenance of law and order, the administration of justice and in related voluntary organisations. It was an inspiring occasion. The new formatted Police led Neighbourhood Forum held on 5 October at the Manor Leisure Centre was very well attended. Inspector Rob Hill chaired the meeting and it was agreed that he would be the permanent chair of the Forums. PC Stu Wright and PCSO Andy Holliday were also in attendance and gave an update on previous forum priorities and crime and incident information. Insp. Hill advised the meeting that there are proposals to restructure the constabulary; as discussions are currently being held, he promised to keep us informed of any outcome. As soon as a venue has been arranged for the next meeting a date will be publicised. A new business opened in Whittlesey on 6 October – Good Luck to Peppe and Maria of VESUVIO Restaurant on Eastgate; I can say that the opening night was a huge success. FINALLY – The Fenland Enterprise Business Awards were held on 7 October. The Mayors of the four Fenland Towns were privileged to each be asked to present one of the awards. I presented

the award for the New Business of the Year category and it was won by Buttercross Auctions of Whittlesey. I thought things could not get better, but how wrong can you be – a new award category this year – PRIDE IN FENLAND. A challenge was offered to the four Fenland towns that tested every inch of their entrepreneurial spirit. Members of the public were asked to vote for the town which had, in the past 12 months, shown off the greatest business, commercial, enterprise and innovative zeal - and YES - WHITTLESEY WON. THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU to everyone that voted for the Town. I was greatly honoured to receive the award on behalf of you all. The certificate and award will be displayed at the Town Council Office. I am now busy preparing for the arrival of our son and family from America at the end of November and before you know it, it will be Christmas and another year will be over ..........................‘Til the next time Kay.

Whittlesey WI It has been another successful and enjoyable year for the Whittlesey WI. In January members had a meal at the Farmers in Yaxley and also celebrated a members birthday. The monthly lunch club is still proving very popular. In April, Peter Carter the “Last Eel catcher“ gave a wonderful talk on this way of life that has almost disappeared. June’s meeting was a social evening when members enjoyed fish and chips from Friar Tucks. Julie Sandbrook gave a most interesting talk on an important subject “Fire Safety“ in July. “A walk down Market Street” was the subject of a fascinating talk given by Maureen Watson. The summer outing to Cromer and Felbrigg Hall was enjoyed by members despite the dismal weather. Once again November is time for the AGM, followed in December by Ann Purt giving a demonstration on a “Christmas Flower Arrangement”. We have welcomed quite a few new members this year and 2012’s programme promises to be interesting and varied too. Our meetings are held at St Andrew’s Church Hall on the first Tuesday of each month (except January) at 7:30pm where you will find a warm welcome. New Italian Restuarant opens its doors

Vesuvio Italian Restaurant Last month the team at Discovering Whittlesea were invited to the opening of a brand new restaurant in Whittlesey. Great food, friendly staff and beautiful restaurant, Natasha Shiels finds out more.

V

esuvio Italian Restaurant opened its doors for a selected audience early in October. I was lucky enough to be invited and was excited to see for myself what this new restaurant offered. Kay Mayor, Whittlesey’s Mayor, had the honour of officially opening the restaurant. From the moment I stepped inside I realised that this place with different. Transported to the warmth of Italy itself, I was blown away by the array of beautifully presented authentic food and the warmth of Maria and Peppe, it’s new owners.

and others which were completely new to me like the Peperoni Rippieni, stuffed peppers with minced beef. If you think you will see a menu of just pasta and pizza, then you will be surprised at the range and choice Vesuvio has to offer. There’s nothing quite like tasting something new for the very first time, and realising that you cannot go through life without tasting it again. Vesuvio offers a special menu with classic and exciting dishes, something for everyone.

Born in Italy, Peppe worked in various restaurants before moving to the UK in 2004. His wife, Maria, who also lived in Italy for a few years, was born and brought up in Whittlesey. So why open a restaurant “W wan t here? Maria explained her passion for If the success of the launch night is u sen Whittlesey: “We are both very proanything to go by, then Vesuvio will be ba nt Whittlesey and don’t like to see empty a favourite restaurant of ours for years t .” shops, hence when these premises to come. Maria added: “I was really became available we jumped at the pleased with response to the opening chance of opening up the restaurant. We evening; it was a great success and I want to put something back into the town.” would like to thank all that attended and hope that those who could not make it will visit soon.” Maria and Peppe’s desire to put something back into the community, mean that we have another great restaurant in Whittlesey. It’s exciting to have a brand new restaurant locally, but what makes this place special is the people behind it and the food. Maria is an incredibly warm hostess, and she welcomes you into her restaurant as though you are entering her home. Stepping into the kitchen and watching Peppe throw pizza dough into the air, my mouth salivated and the food did not disappoint. I filled my plate with a range of wonderful different dishes, some of which I had tasted such as Bruschetta with fresh tomatoes and delicious home cooked pizza,

Council & Church

A word from

Whittlesey Christian Church The Other Side of the Coin

It appears to the ‘thinkers’ in our society, that many decision makers allow themselves to become overly influenced by knee-jerk reactions or those who shout the loudest, especially on such issues as human rights, liberties, expectations etc. without taking the time to think through what the ultimate consequences could be, or considering ‘the other side of the coin.’ I was the 7th of 8 children (I still marvel at how my parents remained sane.) Whilst being strong disciplinarians they deeply loved and sought to wisely guide their children. I still recall them saying ‘there are always 2 sides to every coin’, as they sought to discover the WHOLE truth about any story they heard. Without doing this we run the risk of making decisions which may appear right at first but then turn out to have an unexpected sting in the tail. Sometime ago whilst presenting a teaching to our church on this very issue, I brought out the difference between ancient Greek cultural thinking (which has influenced our Western attitudes) and Hebrew cultural thinking which should be considered when seeking to understand the Bible. The difference, in a nutshell, is that Greek thinking tends to only focus on the immediate problem and how to solve it. However, Hebrew thinking will take into account any possible long-term consequences of that apparent solution which is ‘the other side of the coin’. This is why Westerners attempting Brian Smithyman (Pastor of to broker peace deals with Israel find it so frustrating that just when they think Whittlesey Christian Church, they have a solution, Israel returns to the negotiations with more issues requiring Broad Street) discussion. It’s also the reason why Israel still survives as a nation regardless of Further enquiries from intense persecution and a mind-boggling inflation rate which would sink any Western Church Office: 01733 752093 nation. Brian’s Mobile: 07976 957793 When the UK introduced the ‘seat belt law’ I admit to struggling with ‘its intrusion’ Email: brians@whittlesey.cc on my liberty until I had a conversation with a Danish Pastor friend, whilst teaching Church Website: in his church. Seat belts had long since been compulsory in Scandinavia and he patiently listened to what I had to say. Then he said ‘Brian, your reasoning ignores www.whittlesey.cc one thing; if you are injured in an accident as a direct result of not wearing a seat belt, I and other tax payers have no choice but to pay towards your care through increased taxation. If this freedom is important to you then sign a contract that commits you to personally paying for any such related care because your freedom penalises me.’ Initially I didn’t like that comment but had to acknowledge it was true.

Plane Crashes

Local history rediscover your area through time

GEOFF OLDFIELD

W

e remember this month those members of the Armed Forces who gave their lives serving their country. It is worth reflecting on aeroplanes and their crew which crashed locally whilst flying to or from one of the plethora of military airfields scattered around this area.

During the Second World War a Liberator bomber came down in Whittlesey Wash, a Wellington bomber clipped the trees on North Green, Coates before crashing on to a house killing all four members of the Fletcher family living there. Mrs. Fletcher’s sister had only just arrived from London to escape being killed in the Blitz!! The rear gunner of the aeroplane was the only person of the crew to survive. A Lancaster MkII came down in 1944 just south of Eastrea, killing eight of the Australian crew. The American crew of a badly damaged B17 Flying Fortress baled out over Whittlesey Wash and were rounded up by my father and fellow members of the Home Guard. Thinking they might be German parachutists my father took his sten gun with him. It was a good job they were not the enemy as he had left the magazine containing the bullets for the sten gun on the kitchen table!! Probably the worst crash, and certainly the most documented, occurred during a thunderstorm at Thorney Toll on 28th August 1976. A C141 Lockheed Starlifter plummeted into a beet field owned by Mr. Arnold Hemmant. All of the American crew of fourteen and their four passengers, including one woman were killed. The death toll could have been a lot higher as the Starlifter was able to carry 150 people but on this occasion it was loaded with 27,000 pounds of cargo instead of a full complement of passengers. The plane was on its way from Maguire Air Base in New Jersey to Mildenhall in Suffolk. Witness to the crash describe the plane as having a wing missing and hearing a clap of thunder and the plane was just like a ball of fire before hitting the ground and exploding, scattering debris over half a mile. The first man on scene was Mr John Nobbs from Knarrr Cross Farm who said ‘as soon as I heard it crash I went over to see if I could help but realised that nothing could be done for those poor devils on board. The burning aircraft had formed a huge hole in the ground and the wreckage was too hot to get anywhere near’. He later helped to remove some of the outer wreckage with his Land Rover. Rescue teams from the USAF Bases at Alconbury and Mildenhall were also hampered by the intense heat generated. Brigadier General Richard Drury who had flown over from America to head the nineteen strong investigation team said that it would take three to four weeks to reach a

conclusion. Heavy lifting gear was brought in to remove the wreckage to Mildenhall and the bodies, identified by their dental records, were flown home from RAF Lakenheath to New Jersey. After due deliberation, the conclusion of the investigating team was that the aircraft suffered structural failure after flying into a severe thunderstorm, causing the starboard wing, horizontal stabilizer and the vertical tail fin to separate from the aircraft.

Policing your area by Andy

Holliday

Again since my last report your local policing team has had a successful drug result. Officers on plain clothes patrol smelt a strong smell of cannabis around the Braemar Gardens area. Whilst conducting relevant checks around the area a male came out of a property on Ramsey Road and at that point it was obvious to the officers that the smell was coming from the male’s property. A Section 32 search was carried out at the property and as a result of this 77 cannabis plants + 3 bags of cannabis were seized as well as one bag of amphet. The male was arrested for possession with intent to supply and is currently awaiting bail. Back in June officers carried out a warrant at an address whereby there was a substantial amount of cannabis seized from the property. Recently we have had confirmation of the decision for the male involved; I am pleased to say that as a result of this crime the male has been sentenced with 16 months imprisonment. This is an excellent example of how your local policing team is cracking down on the drugs within the town. Back in October there was a neighbourhood police forum held at the Manor Leisure centre. The forum gave members of the public the opportunity to

raise any concerns that they had within their neighbourhood to their local policing team and councillors. As a result of the forum three new panel priorities were set and the local policing team are working on these to try and resolve the issues if not reduce the impact factor which they have on residents. The priorities are as follows: • Speeding – Stonald Rd, New Rd and Yarwells Headlands • Anti-Social behaviour in the St Mary’s ward • Parking outside Alderman Jacobs School. I wish to thank everyone who attended the meeting and for having your say in the decision to make these our new priorities.

On Friday the 23rd of September, the majority of Park Lane School pupils took part in an annual sponsored walk to raise money for reading resources in the school. Some teachers decided to join in the fun as everyone walked round the school field. Park Lane students were extremely lucky with the weather as it was a glorious afternoon. Even some parents came and helped children to complete their 10 or 20 laps. Mrs Bradshaw (Year 6 teacher) explained about the event, saying, “There’s a lovely atmosphere. It’s great to see the older pupils supporting the younger ones. There’s a real sense purpose.” To end a lovely afternoon, the school had a raffle with a prize of a £5 gift voucher. There were three lucky winners: Danny King, Oliver Bottomley and Flo Hall. Oliver said, “I am so lucky to have won the raffle!” It was hoped that Park lane will raise lots of money following last year’s success of £1,600. There is still more money to be collected but Headteacher, Mrs Cameron, is hopeful and said, “I think we will raise more than enough money to buy new books and other equipment.”

Providing for Long Term Care

A today

The funding of long term care has been discussed by successive governments, local authorities and many interested parties. With an aging population, increasing costs and reduced central budgets – it is a subject that will affect most families at some time.

At the time of writing, proposals to change the level of contribution that individuals will have to make has not been decided. A frequent question I am asked is on the lines of ‘How can we preserve the assets built up over a lifetime?’

could be set to return. Theoretically a plan to deliver an upper capped amount could ensure care costs are covered. Another option might be to investigate whether equity release could purchase such a plan. Meanwhile, until details are confirmed, we need to deal with the situation as it is.

How can we preserve the assets built up over a lifetime?

To avoid taking independent financial and legal advice is no longer an option unless you are happy to abide by any demands made of you, or an elderly relation. Financial planning in this area is about considering what assets are available and planning how they might best be utilised in the future – the sooner a plan is made the more secure the outcome is likely to be. In the past insurance based options were available, they are difficult to find now – but if care funding parameters are established, these

Some discussion points might include: • Claiming all the relevant allowances • separating ownership of certain assets and accounts • Will review • Investment review • Immediate Care Fees plan • gifting and Inheritance Tax. This is not an exhaustive list, but a review should be conducted by an IFA with Long Term Care qualifications such as myself – see contact details below for a free initial consultation.

Tech Talk Windows 8?

Computing monthly tips and advice from the wonderful team at SG COMPUTING

What is windows 8? Windows 8 is a new operating system from Microsoft that is in the process of being developed and will be available sometime in 2012. SG computing is lucky enough to have seen a developer preview of windows 8.

So what’s different? People who went from Vista to Windows 7 might say it looked very similar; however with windows 8 it is totally different and has had major changes throughout the whole operating system. In Windows 8 Microsoft has redesigned and rethought the start menu layout. If you have seen or use the Windows phone then you would be familiar with the tiles screen. The tiles screen is a full screen start menu that has many different tiles with all kinds of information. Microsoft has introduced widgets into their start menu which can give you basic information without having to open a program for quick and easy access. For example the weather gadget, on the start menu if will give you your current weather without having to click anything. If you wanted to find out what the weather will be like in a few days you just click the widget then it will open the tile in full screen mode and will give you more information. Microsoft has designed the start menu to work well with touch screen computers and tablets, if you don’t have a touch screen the interface work just as well with a keyboard and mouse. The start menu is just one of the features this new operating system has to offer.

Nathan is currently exploring windows 8 and next month he will try to explain things in more detail.

Tp h t mna ii? By Mayur Mistry & Ubhi Varsani (Registered Osteopaths)

We have come to our last article on arthritis. This month we are considering how best to manage arthritis. What we have outlined below are our observations from working closely with patients, therefore they may not appear in any research papers! Although, we cannot prevent arthritis we can take steps to limit its affect on our daily lives. There are a few basic principles we regularly discuss with our patients. These are:

A balanced lifestyle Keeping a balance in your life can ensure that your joints are not over or underworked. Maintaining strength (e.g. walking) and flexibility (e.g. avoiding static postures for > 45mins) of your joints is key, however recovery tends to be longer in arthritic joints, so rest is equally important.

Avoid repetitive activities Joints are designed to move and this ensures they function well. However, performing the same type of movement each day results in the same joints and muscles being used. This can ultimately lead to fatigue and irritation of your joints. Therefore, try to alter your activities on a day to day basis.

Realistic aims We are all made differently and are at different stages of our lives. So be realistic about what you can do in a day and plan breaks in between.

Listen to your body Pain is our body’s warning signal that is best listened to. Adjusting your surroundings to suit your physical abilities may help reduce the frequency of these pain signals. e.g. if bending is difficult, place regularly used dishes at shoulder height to avoid bending.

Intervention Manual therapies such as osteopathy or physiotherapy can help keep your joints and muscles healthy by stretching your muscles, articulating your joints and prescribing exercises to help strengthen your muscles. Medication can also help with your pain (consult your GP).

We hope this series of articles have been of interest, next month we will look at headaches.

Firework Advice for Pet Owners

Fireworks commonly cause stress and worry to pets, as well as to their owners trying to ensure the well being of them. So here’s our guide to help you and your furry friends prepare for firework • Your pet is likely to feel safer if you’re around so don’t leave them alone • It’s important to keep pets inside once the fireworks start, so plan ahead and make sure any exercise and toileting is out of the way in good time • Allow enough time for natural products available from your vets such as DAP sprays, diffusers and collars, or medicines, to take effect

• Make sure there’s a cosy place where your pet can hide and feel secure. Often dogs will appreciate a den created under the kitchen table, a blanket on the floor behind the sofa or if they were crate trained, their crate

Remember firework parties aren’t confined to just one evening

• Keep your garden gate and doors shut, and make sure your pet is microchipped and wearing their collar and tag just in case they bolt in fear and escape

• Don’t over fuss, this may indicate to them that there is indeed something to be frightened of • Close the curtains and turn up the tv or radio nice and loud

• Distract pets with their favourite game, toy or a treat just before and during fireworks

• It’s important not to punish any signs of stress or fear and remember to stay calm yourself

Unfortunately firework parties are not confined to one evening and depending on your location it can be an ongoing problem at this time of year. If you would like any advice, then please ask a member of staff at your local Vets who will be happy to offer further advice.

TRANSFORMERS

Released 28th November

DARK OF THE MOON Transformers: Dark of the Moon is a 2011 American science fiction-action film based on the Transformers toy line. First released on June 23, 2011, it is the third instalment of the live-action Transformers film series. Like its predecessors, Transformers and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Transformers: Dark of the Moon is directed by Michael Bay and produced by Steven Spielberg. The film’s story structure revolves around a genuine NASA manned mission to the Moon. Three years after the events of the second film and 42 years after the Apollo 11 space race, the Autobots continue to work for the NEST (Networked Elements: Supporters and Transformers) military force. Meanwhile, the We now repair DVD/Game discs Decepticons unveil a NOVEMBER RELEASES •CARS 2 plan to use the new •BRIDESMAIDS •THE ZOOKEEPER groundbreaking technology, the Pillars, to enslave Humanity in order •HORRIBLE BOSSES • KUNG FU PANDA 2 to save the home planet of the Transformers, Cybertron. •HORRID HENRY: THE MOVIE Shia LaBeouf returns for the third film, playing the movie’s human hero Sam Witwicky, but a new face joins him, Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley who replaces Megan Fox. Like previous films, there are some fabulous action sequences and epic battles that take your breath away. Bay sets the story up well with a prologue set in the early 60s, and fans who loved the awe of giant metal creatures clashing will not be disappointed with this one.
