I

t’s hard to avoid the Olympics at the moment, as I am currently writing this, it’s late July and the opening ceremony is only a week away. I’ve even found myself swept up by the spirit of the games, and even entered myself in a running race. I’m not ready to compete with the likes of Usain Bolt, but I still felt that glow of pride when I crossed the finish line (even considering I was soaking wet). In this issue we talk to Atif Iqbal, a Whittlesey teacher who was fortunate enough to run with the Olympic Torch. See his story on page 7. As expected, we received quite a lot of feedback following the article about Tesco’s - and our Postbag reflects this (page 59)! I would like to reiterate that the magazine remains impartial, and I apologise to those of you who were confused by the piece. It would be unfair of us to support either supermarket, and instead believe in a fair expression. We are in communication with both groups, and will continue to deliver the latest information where possible. You might have seen representatives from Sainsbury’s in Whittlesey last month, and for those of you who missed the team, you can see the full story on page 39. This month we have lots of local news and events happening in Whittlesey, including the latest news on the Whittlesey Festival (page 9). We also have information on the Manor Lesiure Centre Jubilee flower beds, plus regular features by the Street Pride team, your local gardening centre and our monthly recipe by Simon at J Jones Butchers. Have you got a favourite article? Write in and tell us. Your feedback is always valued. And don’t forget to keep sending in your views for our postbag page. Natasha Shiels, Editor

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Great result for SANDS Words Chris Brudenell Back in February my friend Amy lost her little boy at 8 months still born. All of her friends were devastated by the news and we decided to do something to help. Determined to help, my friend Anna foster and I, decided to hold a baby and toddler nearly new sale at the Ivy leaf club in Whittlesey to raise some money for the still born charity SANDS. The sale was a massive success. As well as the table top sale, we also had a raffle, face painting, a bouncy castle and a Mickey Mouse mascot to help us raise funds. I am thrilled to say we raised a grand total of £785! All of the money will go straight to SANDS to help those who need it most!

Local man runs with the Olympic Torch Atif Iqbal, a teacher from Sir Harry Smith Community College, was one of the 8,000 who was lucky enough to run with the torch ahead of the 2012 Summer Olympics. So what does it take to be a torchbearer, and what impact does it have? Discovering Whittlesea spoke to Atif to find out just that. The 8,000 torchbearers were all inspirational people, nominated by someone they know, and given an opportunity to inspire millions of people watching in their community. Atif was no exception, and was nominated by his brother for his exceptional charity work. He explained: “I set up my own personal organisation called Peterborough's Active Youth (P.A.Y) and have many people working with me. I organise different events such as charity football tournaments, football leagues running on a Friday evening and dinner events. We have raised money for victims of the Pakistan earthquake in 2005, Pakistan flood appeal 2010, Japan tsunami, Haiti earthquake appeal, Africa famine, and local cancer charities in England.” In the last seven years, Atif has managed to raise an incredible £70,000. When asked what motivates him, the local teacher commented that he is inspired by his “Religion Islam . I am a Muslim and one of the pillars of this faith is charity and helping the poor. I hope that my charity work helps those less fortunate throughout the world.”

Being chosen to run with the Olympic torch humbled Atif: “It’s nice that others have recognised my charity work and accordingly rewarded me with this privilege of holding the torch.” Since then, Atif has spoken at Park Lane Primary School on his experience. He added: “I would like to thank staff and students (especially my form class!) at Sir Harry who have been very supportive and encouraging.”

Picture Chris Brudenell

And in case you were wondering what will happen to the Torch, Atif assures me it will be staying in his family, and passed down to his Grandchildren. August 2012 | Discovering

Building an Educational Legacy from the

London 2012 Olympic Games

ast month saw the celebration event of an Olympic inspired Programme at Sir Harry Smith Community College in Whittlesey and Brendan Reilly, Double Olympian, visited the college to present medallions to the students in Year 8. The Be the Best you can Be! programme has been developed to inspire, engage and empower young people to recognise and fulfil their potential and to support the quest that the London 2012 Olympic Games be an inspiration to the youth of Britain and the rest of the world. In September 2011 Ben Quilter, Judo Olympian, launched the Be the Best you can Be! programme by delivering a very inspirational talk to staff and students about his career, highs and lows, hopes and dreams and sharing his stories of how success is a journey with the need to overcome inevitable setbacks. As role model, Ben Quilter kick started the programme of ‘achievement of dreams’ into the curriculum at Sir Harry Smith Community College. Following the launch, a programme of study was put together by staff to help the young people discover the skills they need to follow their dreams and to begin their own successful journey. The Programme concludes today with a Celebration, where all the young people and teachers share what they have learnt and support each other in pursuing their dreams and goals. The students are presented with a recognition medallion produced and sponsored

by the Royal Mint, intended to encourage them to continue to work towards their goals or set new ones. By completing the Programme young people raise their self-confidence and self-esteem and benefit from higher aspirations, and a clearer path to how they can realise their dreams.

Becky Lee, Head of Year 8, at Sir Harry Smith Community College said: I was determined that our school would be one of the schools to undertake the Be the Best you can Be! Programme. The inspiration offered by Olympians, Paralympians and high achievers who strive to achieve their dreams is incredibly powerful and can really reach out and engage our young people. I am pleased to welcome Brendan Reilly to close our programme. PICTURES Chris Brudenell

Prepare to be Amazed at the..

Whittlesey Festival You’ll be absolutely amazed at the Whittlesey Festival this year on Sunday 9 September where you’ll see highly amusing and skilled street performers ‘Phillipe and Phillope’. Their unique act includes walking on stilts whilst riding a bike – yes that’s right whilst riding a bike, juggling, circus skills and lots more. They always attract a lot of attention wherever they go and we can’t wait to see them at the Festival, it’s certainly a sight not to be missed. But that’s not all, the ever popular vintage car display is even bigger this year with over 100 vehicles which for the first time will include motorcycles. The display will extend further along Market Street and the whole of Broad Street so you can truly take a walk back in time. There’s something for everyone with numerous stalls and attractions. Children can enjoy free rides, climbing wall, pony rides (for a nominal charge) and the ever popular free face painting which is available at the Whittlesey Christian Church marquee on the market square on the day. Here you’ll also be able to see the Puppet shows which young and old are guaranteed to enjoy. The Market Square and surrounding streets will be a hive of activity with singers, marching bands and dance displays including line dancing, street dance, dance using flags, clog dancing and majorettes.

The traditional all day Craft Fair will once again be held in the Childers Club in Station Road and the Beautiful Baby competition (which is a tough one for the judges as the babies are all so cute) will be held in the Ivy Leaf Club. See the fantastic local Schools Art Exhibition at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street – which is open all day. The winners prize giving will be at 3pm by the Mayor of Whittlesey at the church. The Festival will also be starting with an exciting Parade from here at 10.30 am where various community groups and those taking part will gather and set off to the Market Square to celebrate the opening of the Festival.

For more information about the Festival please contact Pauline Edge on 01733 208414 or Jenny Parker on 01733 351005.

Ladysmith W.I.

Yet another party for Ladysmith W.I. at their next meeting! This will be a bring and share Plate Party so we can enjoy a good social evening with a surprise buffet consisting of whatever is brought by members on the night. This is usually a great success and a chance for us all to cook/buy and share our favourite snacks and cakes. Keeping with the Olympics/Holidays theme, the competitions this month will be for a homemade flag and a bought holiday souvenir. The venue as usual is St Andrew's Hall, Parkinsons Lane at 7.30pm on Tuesday 14th August. For more information call Glen on 01733 208702.

Anglia in Bloom

Nathan Turner, who studied his A-levels at Sir Harry Smith Community College, succeeded in getting into Oxford University and has just finished his finals with a First Class Honours degree. Currently working for Rolls Royce in Bristol for his second internship, Nathan returned to Whittlesey to take part in the Ex-Sixth form reunion (see page 17 for more on this). He added: “During my University application I received a great deal of support from all staff at Sir Harry Smith, academic and otherwise. From the additional maths classes to the financial help provided to attend an Interview Preparation Day, the school played a major part in my success getting into Oxford University. I spent seven great years at Sir Harry Smith, including two at the Sir Harry Smith Sixth Form. The school’s guidance not only helped me to succeed in my application, but encouraged me to achieve academically during my time at University. I am certain that the school will continue to produce committed and successful students, and would like to encourage them to maintain their high standards of teaching and support.” Rose Garden at Church Street created by Streetpride

by Kay Mayor

In the May edition of Discovering Whittlesea, I mentioned that Whittlesey had been entered into the Anglia in Bloom competition this year; judging took place on 17th of July and results will be announced at the presentation evening at St Ives on Tuesday 11th September. There are several special categories and it was decided to enter Whittlesey for a couple of these. We will also be considered for the category of first time entrants – there are six this year. While the title of the competition is indicative of flowers, it needs to be acknowledged that floral displays must be proportionate to areas of sustainable planting and permanent landscaping. Floral displays may be present in a number of locations but typically displays will be located in publicly owned areas. Environmental responsibility is also at the core of In Bloom, including permanent/sustainable initiatives. Following their tour to carry out the judging,

the judges returned to Grosvenor House for discussions and tea and cakes. During their deliberations they advised that they were very impressed by the allotments in New Road and commented that Whittlesey should consider continuing to enter the competition. I would like to encourage the Town to go forward again whatever the result this year. We will need a committee of approximately six dedicated people to take on this project along with other volunteers who would like to get involved. If you are interested in becoming involved please email me on kaymayor@fenland.gov.uk - I already have a couple of volunteers but still need more! August 2012 | Discovering

A Kay word from Mayor AUGUST already..Here I am, writing at the beginning of July and the weather is truly awful – having been declared a drought area with a hosepipe ban in April the weather changed and the ban was lifted mid-June; we are now on a flood warning! Depressing isn’t it? Firstly I should like to acknowledge that Mrs Pam Potts, the first Mayor of Whittlesey (2007/08) has been awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the Community of Whittlesey in the Queen’s Birthday Honour’s List; due to the timing of articles being sent for publication of Discovering Whittlesea magazine it has not been possible to publicly acknowledge this before now. Pam has done loyal service to the Town on both Whittlesey Town and Fenland District Councils for 20 years and we congratulate her on this award. Since my July article was sent off to Natasha, I’ve attended a few Civic events including the Civic Leaders Tour of Alconbury & Molesworth, the High Sheriffs Summer Reception, the Whittlesey WI’s Diamond Jubilee Fete, the Dedication of the New War Memorial in Bridge Street, Peterborough, the installation of the new Mayor of Peterborough in Peterborough Cathedral, the Fenland Armed Forces Day with the Veteran’s Badge Presentation, the USAF Independence Day Celebrations, the Wisbech Mayor’s Civic Service and the Fenland District Council Chairman’s Civic Reception. I hope you all noticed that we had our own Armed Forces Day Flag flying at the Town Hall for week commencing 25 June. This was in line with all other Towns in the Country and hopefully the flag will now be raised every year. Several issues have arisen and been discussed by the Town Council which I would like to share with you; Firstly, you will have noticed the refurbishment of the toilets in Station Road (at the rear of The George); Fenland District Council is refurbishing one toilet block in each of the Market Towns. The respective Town Councils were given the option to take over one or all of the remaining toilet blocks within their individual Towns. Following much debate, unfortunately Whittlesey Town Council agreed that it could not take on the toilet block in Grosvenor Road as it was not financially viable. Whilst appreciating it is something we have all come to rely upon, I have to advise you that it is not a statutory duty of Fenland District Council to provide toilet facilities. At the time of writing the refurbishment is not complete. Secondly, another issue which has been discussed at length by residents and Councillors is grass

cutting. I really don’t know where to start to try and explain the issues raised; there have been numerous complaints about the standard of grass cutting, not just in Whittlesey but throughout Fenland. Grass cutting along with the parks (including FDC Cemeteries) maintenance is carried out by contractors on behalf of Fenland District Council. Every complaint received has been passed through to FDC and the work is now being carefully monitored. Of course, the inclement weather has played a major part this year; if you remember last year was very dry and there was little grass to cut; this year we have the opposite problem because of so much rain, this has promoted the grass growth and the contractors have not always been able to keep to the agreed schedule for cutting. However, the Town Council will not let the matter drop and all complaints will be dealt with.

Kay Mayor

My next point is in the form of a grumble regarding vandalism in the Garden of Rest in Station Road. You may recall that FDC planted four rose beds as a project for the Diamond Jubilee. Before the roses were planted someone came along and removed one of the posts which had been put in to support the climbing roses. The posts were then cemented in to prevent a recurrence. However on the evening of 29/30 June someone entered the Garden and took out one of the posts and left it against the Straw Bear Statue and made an obscene drawing on the back of the statue. You may well ask why people do these things; I wish I could give you an answer. It is really heart-breaking to think we are trying to do the best for our Town and an individual comes along and tries to ruin things. I hope whoever did it reads this and feels deeply ashamed. Please remember that if you need me to attend your club, school or event please get in touch; whenever possible I will make myself available to attend. Also the Town Council office at Grosvenor House

will be closed between 9th and 27th August

inclusive due to staff holidays.

When you read this the children will be enjoying the school holidays and I do hope that we are going to have some sunshine soon to enable us all to enjoy what is left of the summer.

SHSCC Sixth Form Reunion 2012 Ex-students from Sir Harry Smith Community College were reunited last week at a Sixth Form Reunion. The reunion, which was held at the college last Friday night for students who left between 1997 and 2011, was a dual-purpose event, both to reunite ex-students and to say a fond farewell to Jenny Smith, current Head of Sixth Form, who is giving up her role this year.

T

he reunion was pioneered by Nathan Turner, an ex-student who left the college in 2009. With the help of Jenny Smith and Curriculum Manager for English Sharon Ashworth, Nathan was able to gather over 100 guests to the reunion, including many ex-students and teachers, some of whom had travelled from other parts of the country to attend. Nathan also made a presentation to Jenny Smith to commemorate her time in the Sixth Form and the Staff Association presented her with flowers. Jenny Smith, Head of Sixth Form, said: “It was lovely to meet up with so many ex-students.

Since 1997 the Sixth Form has grown from thirteen students to last year’s intake of over one hundred and forty. It was a pleasure to meet all the ex-students to hear their news and share memories” Sharon Ashworth, Curriculum Manager for English, said: “This event has been fabulous for both the students and the staff, some of whom have now left the school and travelled back for the evening. It’s been brilliant to see the exstudents and to find out how they’re getting on. It’s so rare that we get that opportunity. Credit to Nathan for helping to organise it and making it such a wonderful success.”

THE OLDFIELD THATCHERS OF WHITTLESEY By Geoff Oldfield

Local History

As this is my fiftieth article for Discovering Whittlesea and its predecessor, I thought that I would let you have a brief insight into the history of my ancestors who worked in the thatching trade.

T

he earliest records of the family go back to 1698 when William (my seven times great grandfather) married An Garner. The first intimation pf their involvement in the thatching business is a survey carried out in November 1758, when a surveyor was employed to measure the area of a roof in South Street Crowland to ascertain the amount of thatch used. The firm’s written records start in 1799 and are continuous until 1974. The name had changed through the years from James Oldfield to Robert Oldfield to Oldfiled Bros and finally to W. Oldfield & Sons. Working outside in all weathers my father joked that the only roof he had thatched inside a building was over the bar in The Falcon in Whittlesey. Their work took them to Sussex and Surrey, thatching new estate houses, public houses, garages and petrol filling stations and they were privileged to be given the job of rethatching the Old Clergy House at Alfiston, the first property acquired by the National Trust. Before the advent of combine harvesters the month of August was usually reserved for thatching stacks of newly mown corn to protect them from the weather. These stacks when threshed provided a ready made source of roofing material. After threshing, a straw stack was purchased and cut into and used as the need arose. Reed and sedge was originally obtained locally, but was eventually obtained from the Norfolk Broads and sent to Whittlesey by rail and later on by road haulage contractor. An area next to the river at Deeping St James which was planted with willow trees was purchased in the early 1950s to provide wood for cutting into ‘Speets’, ‘Layers’ and ‘Diamonds’ and to supplement the wood obtained from the willow trees growing along the wash road as far as ‘Dog-in-a-doublet’. The speets were twisted into horseshoe shaped pegs for holding the thatching material in place whilst the layers and diamonds formed the decorative pattern along the ridge. Before they had mechanisation, it was a days walk with a horse drawn cart fully loaded to, say Elton, unload the cart and ride the empty cart

back to the premises in Low Cross Whittlesey. These premises were occupied from the 1850s until the firm was wound up in 1974 due to the retirement of Fred and Hubert Oldfield. The first lorry was purchased in about 1915 and made distributing materials a lot easier. Mechanised transport meant that they could take their tools, ladders and a certain amount of thatching material all over the country with them, and on one occasion the family cat, which had found a comfortable bed on the loaded straw overnight, and woke up in Chichester and had to be returned to Whittlesey by rail!! Numbered among their clients were the Royal Estate at Sandringham, the Duke of Bedford, lord de Ramsey, earl Spencer, Earl Fitzwilliam and the Marquis of Exeter to name but a few. Many public houses were thatched that were owned by such breweries as Elgoods, Hall Cutlack & Harlock, Northampton Breweries, Phillips & Co and these were taken on board together with work for the Isle of Ely County Council, Christ’s College Cambridge, the Jockey Club at Newmarket and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, the list is endless. I was expected to help during the school holidays and I remember working on Clare’s Cottage in Helpston. As I was not tempted to become a thatcher, the firm and it’s name has died out.

Proudly in association with Wright's of Whittlesey

a roasting pan & then into the oven for 20–25 minutes for medium to well done. Adjust according to your own preference. When the meat is cooked, remove it from the oven & let it cool completely, reserving the pan juices. 3. Heat the butter in a separate pan, add the mushrooms and stir until the mixture is almost dry. Season with salt & pepper, leave to cool. 4. When cool, spread the fillet with the pâté, covering it completely. Lay out a large piece of clingfilm, & place the slices of ham. Lay the pâté-covered fillet on top & spread the mushroom mix over it. 6. Wrap the ham around the fillet & roll tightly in the clingfilm. Refrigerate for about 30 mins. 7. Roll the puff pastry into a rectangle larger than the fillet. Unwrap the fillet from the clingfilm & place it on the pastry. Brush the edges with egg wash. Fold up the long edges of the dough to enclose the sides, pressing together to seal. Fold the ends that have been brushed with the egg mix & press together. Transfer the fillet to an oven tray & place it seam side down. Chill in the fridge for an hour so & then cook for 30 mins. 8. To make the red wine sauce, pour the wine and stock into the reserved juices in the roasting tin & deglaze over a medium heat, incorporating all the crusty bits. Boil to reduce the stock by about a third, add the cold butter and stir| until the sauce has heated through. 25 August 2012 Discovering

A word from

Whittlesey Christian Church Things Are Changing

The month after planning permission was granted, my article focused on our long term plans for the new church building, and how this included extensive remodelling of our existing facilities. As continued growth in many areas of our activities and meetings has created a serious lack of space, we have decided to take a step of faith and believe God to provide the £160,000 / £180,000 required to complete the remodelling phase of these plans. Hopefully this work will commence October/November and take around 4/5 months. Prior to this our very popular Holiday Club in July will go ahead, as will our extensive involvement in the tremendous Whittlesey Festival on September 9th, when amongst other things we host the Schools Art Exhibition. Don’t forget to make a point of looking at their wonderful work on the day, you can also pick up a free cup of tea/coffee into the bargain. As most of the work will be internal I wanted to share with you what all the coming and going of workmen would be about. The whole project will be carried out in stages in order to allow for all our regular activities and services to continue. Stage 1 - Will see the erection of a 6x5mtr Log Cabin at the rear of the hall to accommodate our Sunday School work. Stage 2 - Will see work commence on remodelling the rear hall while all activities, including our regular services, take place in the church area. Stage 3 - Once stage 2 is completed everything will be moved into the rear hall while the inside of the church section is gutted, the steel work for a new mezzanine

floor installed, new floors are laid, new platform built and sound system installed. Stage 4 - Will see part of the wall currently separating the church and rear hall demolished to create one large multi-function space, while the new upper floor will provide us with much needed smaller rooms. As with all things of this nature estimates can change, but we hope the project will be completed by Spring 2013 when we look forward to returning to some level of normality. In the meantime, if you are looking for a local church to be a part of, or simply want to explore whether God is relevant to your life, why not come along and experience the tremendous welcome, sense of family and belonging, and lively but meaningful services that are available right on your doorstep. You are also free to call me anytime.

A word from Cllr Martin Curtis

By the time you read this the Olympics will be in full flow. It is something I have had a great deal of involvement in after I was given the responsibility for taking the political lead on the Olympics in Cambridgeshire a few years ago. It has been a responsibility I have thoroughly enjoyed – especially the Torch relay last month, which was a huge success for Cambridgeshire and something those that attended will remember forever. My one regret about the Torch relay was that it did not come through Fenland, although Whittlesey people were luckier than some in the District because of the overnight stop in Peterborough. The torch relay route was solely in the gift of LOCOG (the organisers of the games) – the only role that the County played was in submitting bids for the overnight stops. The details of the route was decided later and we were not able to influence it. A major reason for the success of the Torch Relay was the effective way the whole of the public sector was able to come together to deliver such a huge event. One of my biggest concerns about Government organisations at every level is that we don’t always work well enough together. The Torch Relay in the County showed that if

the will is there we can deliver. We now have to make sure we can provide the same sort of joined-up focus on a more day-today basis. A major factor in London winning the Olympic bid was legacy – the promise that good would come out of the games that lasted well beyond August 2012; this has been a major part of my work. Some of our plans in Cambridgeshire include; building on the success of our volunteering programme by continuing our volunteering for events programme; using the excitement that we expect from GB cycling success during the games and the reputation Cambridge has for cycling to develop Cambridgeshire as a cycling county. We have been working on these ideas for some time and focus needs to continue after August. As ever, I am happy to hear from you on any Whittlesey issue. I am available on 07887 808442 or mjc@ martincurtis.net. You can also follow me on twitter using @cllrmcurtis

Garden Jobs for

I

Gardening

August

t’s that time of year when most of us take a summer holiday. If you can, arrange for a neighbour to water your garden while you are away (although the odds that it will rain at some point during August are probably high!). If this is not possible, follow last month’s advice and move your pots to the most shady and damp part of the garden and cluster them together. Water well before you leave and mulch the surface of the soil to retain the moisture.

Plant of the Month

The lawn in August can sometimes look like it’s been used for the Wimbledon final, so rake out the old grass and keep it watered. Mow the lawn lightly to avoid drying it out too much and avoid applying treatments such as weed and feed - most of the weeds should have gone to seed now and it’s more effective to treat grass when the weather is cool and wet.

shrubs, hedges and wisteria. Prune laurel hedges using secateurs, avoid using a hedge trimmer or shears as this leaves the laurel’s foliage looking shabby.

Keep up with the dead-heading. This is vital to prevent your blooms from running to seed. Dispose of the dead-heads in the compost bin or the garden recycling rather than leaving them on the ground where they might encourage or spread disease.

Save yourself time and money by tackling a few jobs while it’s still warm and dry. Check your shed roof for leaks and give wooden surfaces such as fences and front doors a once over. Clean bird tables, feeders and baths thoroughly to help attract wildlife. It might also be an idea to top up the garden pond, if it has been hot some of the water will have been lost to evaporation.

Rambling roses can now be pruned providing they have finished flowering and also most

Plant of the month facts

Phlox

is a hardy herbaceous perennial with fragrant pink, white or purple/blue flowers. With diligent deadheading it will flower from midsummer through to late autumn. A quintessential cottage-garden plant, phlox is a favourite with bees and flower arrangers.

Puzzled by pain?

By Mayur Mistry & Ubhi Varsani (Registered Osteopaths) This month we are looking at an overview of pain. We have put together two puzzles to help you engage with the subject. The key words missing in the paragraphs are the same as those that you need to find in the word search. Where you start is up to you. Pain is our body’s p r o _ _ _ t _ v _ mechanism that prevents us from causing our body harm. Pain nerves are activated by variations in p _ _ s s _ _e, local c h _ _ i c _ l conditions or t e _ _ _ _ _ t u r e. Pain that resolves quickly is called _ c u t _ pain whilst pain that last a long time is called c h r _ _ _ c pain. The immediate sharp pain we feel is as a result of f _ _ t pain fibers transmitting impulses at 130m/s, whilst nagging dull aches results from s _ o _ pain fibers transmitting at 0.5m/s. The amount of pain we feel is not just based on the physical damage, but also on our past e x p _ _ _ _ _ c e of pain, our f _ _ r of the consequences and the _ n v i _ _ _ _ _ n t it occurred in. Pain can shoot into our limbs from our spine. This is usually the result of a t _ _ p p _ _ nerve in our lower back or neck. However, the site of pain may not always be the source. This is termed r _ _ _ r r _ d pain.

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA SINGING AND ITS BENEFITS During 25 plus years of singing, I have belonged to several singing groups and choirs. Many TV and Radio programs have endorsed the benefits of singing as a hobby. My aim is to form a small group of local men who would enjoy meeting regularly to try harmony singing for fun and enjoyment. Teach tracks will be provided to learn your part and a wide selection of music will be considered. Anyone interested who wants more information can give Ron Moore a call on 01733-208549.

THE JUBILEE FLOWER BEDS AT THE MANOR LEISURE CENTRE

Words Martin and Jacqueline Baldrey (Chairman, Whittlesey Allottments and Garden Society) Picture Chris Brudenell I am sure a large number of the residents of Whittlesey have by now seen the new raised flower beds that have 'appeared' over the recent months. I thought that some explanation as to how these beds were originaly thought about, planned, designed, built and finally completed, and where they go in the future, and who contributed what should be given. During 2011 Whittlesey Allotments and Garden Society were approached, and invited to attend a meeting of the committee organising the celebrations for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, where we were asked if we could 'do something' with the grass beds outside the Manor Leisure Centre, to make them more attractive for the Jubilee celebrations that were planned. It quickly became apparent that digging up and planting the beds as they were, was not practical. I did a brief sketch, and took this to Barry Hancocks at the Manor, who put me in touch with Terri Adams at Fenland District Council, who was able to produce a drawing that looked great. Then came the awkward bit, how to do it! Westfield Nurseries supplied the plants; A1 Fencing provided the timber; Thorys gave rubble for the base and good topsoil for planting; Gemmix supplied concrete to bed in the timber frame.

We then enlisted the help of Linnett Ippolito and the Heritage Youth Group, who provided the Food Fair at the Jubillee Celebrations, to help plant the beds. Linnett agreed to allow us to use funds from their Heritage Lottery Grant to pay for the plants! Thanks a million Linnett. And on Saturday 19th May, a wet, cold and miserable morning, we arrived with a number of society members, the youth group, and Kay our dutiful Mayor, who has been so supportive all the way through, to do the planting, some 2000 plants! So, what to the future? The beds are designed to last for ten years, and The Allottments Society will maintain them during that time. My plan was to plant them with perrenial shrubs and plants and spring bulbs to provide colour all year at minimal matainance and expense, but the society has expressed its wish that as next year is the 60th Anniversary of the Queens Coronation we should design one bed with a Crown and the other with the Union Flag, and I was hoping for the quiet life! And finally a very, very big thank you to everybody who has helped with this project, whether it be physical, financial, goods or services. Thank you to the lady across the road who watered for us, and to Whittlesey Manor Bowls Club who allowed us to use their tap to water during the only dry spell this summer! August 2012 | Discovering

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Sainsbury’s cook for Whittlesey! The Sainsbury’s cookery demonstration team (the Try Team) were in Whittlesey on Saturday to share some of Sainsbury’s delicious recipes and fresh produce.

The successful event was held at Buttercross on the Market Square and was combined with a raffle in support of the Park Lane School’s grey water recycling project, which raised £45.00 in three hours from generous donations by local people. Using just a small electric cooker, the team served up more than 500 samples of honey mustard sausages, tomato and onion salsa on bruschetta, fruity chicken curry and strawberry and raspberries with the newly launched fresh creams; Raspberry Royale with Luxado peach liqueur and Lemon and Earl Grey extra thick cream with Limoncello Sainsbury’s received a lot of support for their application on the day for the combination of the proposed store, country park and business

area. Kate McBain, a Community Food & Health Advisor from the Try Team, said: “We really enjoyed visiting Whittlesey and meeting the community. It was really busy from the outset but we were able to give everyone a sample of some of our freshly made dishes which they all thoroughly enjoyed! Sainsbury’s proposals will encourage people to do their weekly food shop in Whittlesey, reducing the need to travel to Peterborough. The store will help deliver significant local benefits.

Chance to brush up your skills Local artists will get the chance to improve their techniques when Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice runs its 9th annual Art Week.

For more information about Sue Ryder call 0845 050 1953 or visit www.sueryder.org

Various workshops will be held throughout the week of September 17th-21st covering watercolours, acrylics and mixed media and in addition, those who prefer craftwork can learn to make a fabric bag in a day. Portraits (people or pets), summer flowers and landscapes are amongst the subjects on offer from a variety of tutors. Those who prefer to do their own thing have the opportunity to paint untutored in the beautiful Thorpe Hall gardens in Longthorpe, Peterborough for a £5 donation. All proceeds from the week will go towards patient care at the hospice. For more information about the workshops, call fundraising on 01733 560767 or email thorpe. fundraising@sueryder.org. Battleship

monthly film review DISCS2PLAY

August

Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epic-scaled action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Inspired by Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS john Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancée; Alexander Skarsgard as Hopper;s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weaspons specialist on the USS John Paul Hones; and international superstar Lian Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane. The film behins in 2005, when NASA discovers an extrasolar planet with conditions similar to Earth. On the chance that it contains intelligent life, NASA transmits a powerful signal from a communications array in Hawaii, which will be boosted by a satellite in orbit. Around the same time, the talented but undisciplined slacker Alex Hopper attempts to impress a woman by getting her a chicken burrito, the result of which sees him arrested for breaking into a convenience store which is seen through the security cameras. The woman is Samantha Shane, daughter of United States Pacific Fleet commander Admiral Terrance Shane, who in turn is the superior of Commander Stone Hopper, Alex’s older brother. Fed up and infuriated at Alex for lack of We now repair DVD/Game discs motivation and possibly ruining his own career, Stone forces him to AUGUST RELEASES join the United States Navy. • HEADHUNTERS • LOCKOUT By 2012, Alex is a lieutenant and the Tactical Action Officer aboard • THE LUCKY ONE • GONE the Arleigh Burke class destroyer USS John Paul Jones, while Stone is the commanding officer of USS Sampson. Alex is also in a relationship with Samantha and wants to marry her, but is afraid to ask her father for permission. Meanwhile five alien ships arrive in response to the NASA signal sent 31/08/2012 earlier, and what follows is a battle between the ships as family loyalty, love, life and death are tested. Battleship will keep you on the edge of your seat, and will be a favourite amongst alien fans.

Care Home Dilemma

Ask the expert today

Recently a client of mine took the phone call he was dreading – his relative (that he holds Power of Attorney for) was asked by the family to help sort out their mother who had fallen victim to dementia. Now the well meaning act of kindness was in sharp focus as the bright light of reality struck home. The family were asking all kinds of questions that he didn’t know the answers to:

• How much would it cost to admit her to a nursing home? • What help would the government provide? • Would they have to sell the home? • What does an assessment mean? • Should their mother give away funds before she is admitted? • How could they ensure

she stays at the home she preferred? My client is a very successful businessman – but after talking to friends and ‘doing a bit of Googling’ on the internet – he was not confident that he knew all the answers. He knew that I specialise in this area of advice so he contacted me. We had a meeting where I took all the relevant information – then arranged a meeting to speak to the other family members, then we agreed a financial action plan and ‘Mum’s really happy now’ If you need help planning later life care, whether you have Power of Attorney or not - contact me to arrange a free initial meeting.

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA WHITTLESEY INDOOR BOWLS CLUB

Bowls has always been a popular outdoor sport and before the days when ‘everyone had a car’, a good number of public houses had a bowling green.

T

hen, in 1984, Indoor Bowls came to Whittlesey using the old cinema in Market Street (now Ostlers), giving an opportunity to play at nights and throughout the year. The membership soon outgrew the two rinks there and in 1991 the present facility in Station Road was opened with five full size rinks. It has not always been an easy ride, but with a membership of about 250, the Club was taken over by the members and a Limited Company was formed. Now, once again, for the four Saturday mornings in August and the first two in September, we are holding a free introductory course to the game of bowls. This gives an excellent opportunity for newcomers to try it without any obligation. All you need is to bring a pair of flat shoes, we provide the rest. Please note that bowls is for ladies as well as men – about a third of our membership is ladies. Last year proved very successful with over 30 newmembers joining and playing throughout the season, reaching a standard that enabled them to have their own league and to represent the club in our week-end games against other teams from Indoor Bowls Clubs in the area and further afield. However, we are not just a bowls club and organise various social events throughout the season. We have a licensed bar as well as a drinks dispenser. Social (non-bowling) membership is £10 a year and gives access to the club whenever we are bowling – generally between 9.30 a.m. to 4.15 p.m. and 7.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9.30am. to 5.00pm. at the weekends.

SEEK THE TRUTH IN WHITTLESEY

All around the country, an engaging group of speakers have been revealing inconvenient truths about the world around us. They are supplying answers for those of us who cannot understand why what we hear on the news no longer makes any sense. Over the coming months, Whittlesey will be the regional host for these talks, taking place on “First Wednesdays” of every month. Coming up on 5th September at 7.30pm is “Bankers, Bailouts and EU Baloney”. This opening salvo will discuss the reality you’re not told about the global downturn, how to protect your savings, and exposing shocking revelations on the true nature of the European Union. Taking place at Childers Social Club on Station Road, Whittlesey, Guest Speaker is Ian R Crane, an ex-oilfield executive who is now one of the world’s leading deep geopolitical researchers. Hosting the event is alex:g, who lives locally and is one of the presenters of “On The Edge” on Sky channel 200. • An adults-only event, tickets are £5.00 each. A Free DVD will be available on the night for advance bookings. Secure your place online at www.ianrcrane.com or call 0700-42858-88 for further information.

If you have any questions please phone the Club Secretary, Alan Foster on 01733 202209 and if the phone is not manned, please leave your name and number for a return call. Come and give it a go – you’ve nothing to lose. We are a very friendly club and will certainly give you a warm welcome and show you what you have been missing! August 2012 | Discovering

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA

POSTBAG

Dear Natasha I wanted to say how useful it was to read the article by Tesco about the proposals for a new foodstore for Whittlesey. I almost cried….with laughter, as Tescos tried to present itself as the caring retailer worried about the town centre losing as much as 55% of its food shopping turnover and 15% of non-food shopping turnover if Sainsbury’s bid were to be successful. I only hope that if there is a new supermarket that the local bus companies will offer a reasonable service to and from it. I was very annoyed that I couldn’t go to see the Olympic Flame earlier this week as neither of our local bus bus companies had the vision to lay on even one late night bus! James

ED’S REPLY I expected to hear quite a bit about the supermarket debate, following last month’s article - I was not disappointed. Thank you for all of your comments. In response to Mr Tullock’s email, the best advice we can give to anyone who would like to make sure their voice is heard is to pass your views to the planning team at Fenland by emailing planning@fenland.gov.uk At the time of printing, the next planning meeting is scheduled for late August.

Having read the views from Harriers, representing Tesco’s plans for a store in or around Whittlesey, I am rather confused! They talk about business being taken away from The Co-op food store and other businesses if two supermarkets are built, but surely, even if only one is built that will happen anyway. The ‘up’ side of the Sainsbury’s plans is the planned Country Park which would be a real bonus for the surrounding community. So to summarise, I would be happiest for a Sainbury’s store to open in our area, providing us with choice, value and reducing the cost of petrol from driving further afield for groceries. Chris

Dear Natasha Having read your July issue and the response from Tesco/ Harrier I feel I must add my comments to this debate. I was astonished at the arrogant response from Tesco/ Harrier. There is currently no Tesco store built, open, and operating in Whittlesey as far as I know, so I am at a loss as to how Tesco can suppose they are established here, and the proposed Sainsbury store can be suggested as, a ‘second’ store. Sainsbury's are prepared to, not only provide a new store, but to provide a park, and leisure area, which would provide more employment opportunities and surely attract 'out of town' shoppers, who, whilst they are there, would visit the town centre, supporting our independent business's, along with paying for a new roundabout at the entrance of the store complex. As this is such an important issue, which will have a substantial impact on the town for years to come, would it not be possible for the local council to organise some kind of voting system where Whittlesey residents can vote on what they want? Mr D Tullock

Olympic Fever at

ALPHABET DAY NURSERY As the 2012 Olympics finally begins, here at Alphabet we were all very excited to have a special visit from Sue who was part of the Olympic Torch Relay. Sue kindly brought in her Olympic Torch which we were all able to learn about and hold. The children all had great fun making their very own Olympic Torch’s and running in our mini Olympic relay.
