Welcome
I
can’t talk about last month without mentioning the 2012 Olympic Games. What an amazing result we had! I was lucky enough to catch quite a bit of the games (mostly because I was suffering from a rather nasty summer cold), and I couldn’t help but feel proud of the sportsmen and women who competed. The highlight for me was watching Mo Farah and Jess Ennis, but I also found myself drawn into the cycling, swimming, horse riding and sailing. Did you feel as proud as I did, that not only did we have so many exceptional sports personalities, but that the London games ran smoothly, and impressively? After the highs of the Olympic Games, comes the inevitable low. Television has resumed it’s normal schedule, we’re no longer listening to the radio to see how many more gold medals Team GB have won, and the streets of London are once again taken over by commuters. But there is something exciting for us to look forward to, something to put the sparkle of anticipation and fun back in the air. Of course I mean the Whittlesey Festival. If you haven’t done so already, make a date in your diary for Sunday the 9th of September, and be part of the fun! For the very latest on this year’s festival, please turn to page 9. As always, this month’s issue of Discovering Whittlesea has the latest news, events and local stories. For you historians out there, make sure you read our article on the Whittlesey Museum - could you be their next volunteer? Have you ever thought about fostering? We have a special feature on foster care on page 17. And finally, congratulations to our local students who have just received their A-Level and GCSE grades. Until next month, take care.
Natasha

Many top athletes have said that they started off doing some sort of sport then tried something different and liked it. At Thorney Running club we encourage participation in all sorts of sports, although our expertise lies in running (a key ingredient of many sports). We train in Thorney and Whittlesey and welcome anyone who wants to ‘have a go’. There is no need to join a club or buy any special equipment. A great introduction is at the Manor Leisure Centre on a Friday evening at 6.15pm, we congregate near the Cricket pitch area for an organised warm up and races of various distances from 500m to 2 miles. Everyone gets a time recorded and it’s FREE. There is no age or ability restriction. Thorney Running Club also have great connections with other sporting organisations, and we are pleased to direct those interested in trying something different – you might discover an activity that changes your life!

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Bumper Summer Fayre for
Park Lane School
Despite the inclement weather Park Lane School had a bumper Summer Fayre this year. The Fayre was officially opened by Jamie Keshwara from Nisa and Robert & Luke Ferrara from the Peterborough Phantoms Ice Hockey Team. We were very pleased to be entertained by Kathryn Johnstone and the Cambridgeshire Caledonian Pipe Band, Park Lane Schools Samba Band, Hula Hoopers and Cheerleaders. Due to the weather half the stalls were inside but everybody had a good day. Friends of park Lane School would like to thank everybody who attended, all the volunteers who manned stalls and especially to Jamie and Anish Keshwara from Nisa (Keshco) for their sponsorship and support. Photogrpahs: Official opening and the Ladies Circle who run our cafe for us!
Nisa making a difference Jamie & Anish Keshwara, both ex-pupils of AJS, have donated £1000 to the AJS school fete held this summer through their Nisa Making a Difference locally charity. The making a difference locally scheme is funded by customers who purchase products which have the logo on them in store. Please look out for the Making a Difference Locally symbol when shopping at Whittlesey's two Nisa stores as when these products are purchased, a donation is made to local good causes including our schools and Whittlesey Streetpride. Jamie & Anish Keshwara add: “Nisa stores are at the heart of the community and believe in supporting projects which benefit the people they serve. We are delighted this sponsorship money from the Nisa fund will help the schools spend the fayre’s profits on projects which will benefit the school and the children.” September 2012 | Discovering

DiscoveringWhittlesea | September t2012
A Kay word from Mayor September has arrived, at least for the magazine; today is the glorious 12th (of August) and I have to get my article ready. At last we are having some sunshine and the farmers have been able to start gathering the harvest and hopefully the children are making the most of the school holidays. Today sees the final competitions of the Olympics and this evening the closing ceremony will be held. If the opening ceremony is anything to go by then I’m sure we are all in for a treat. We were all saddened to receive the news that our Whittlesey Council colleague Ken Peachey lost his ten year courageous fight with cancer and passed away on July 31. Ken was elected to the Town and District Councils in 2007 and was re-elected to serve as a Fenland District Councillor in 2011. Ken will be greatly missed and our thoughts and sincere condolences go to his wife Heather and family. I am aware that Councillor Martin Curtis’ article this month is about dog fouling so felt it right that you should be aware of the Fenland District Council consultation regarding dog banning orders which will run until 22 August. New measures are being proposed to help counter dog fouling and ensure that unruly pets are kept under proper control. They are aimed at protecting all FDC parks and open spaces and come in response to residents’ frequently voiced concerns. The proposals include: • Increased fines (from £50 to £75) for not picking up after a dog has fouled. • Making it clear that dogs are not allowed in gated children’s play areas and some cemeteries • Requiring dogs to be kept on the lead in designated places where it is not suitable for them to be allowed to roam. • Requesting dogs be put on a lead and properly supervised if they are causing a nuisance. Of course most dog owners are responsible and don’t let their pets spoil everyone else’s enjoyment of our open spaces but a small minority don’t and it is something that upsets a lot of people. We await the outcome of the consultation. I couldn’t not make reference to the Music Festival that was held at Guildenburgh Water over the weekend of 3 – 5 August. The Town Council was not consulted prior to the event. Several complaints have been received regarding
noise during the Festival and are being dealt with by the appropriate authorities. I have to thank the FDC Licensing and Environmental Health Officers who were on duty in Whittlesey and monitored the event over the whole weekend. Grosvenor House, has been the Office of the Town Council on Grosvenor Road (off Eastgate) for two years; the property has rooms on the first floor which are now available to lease or hire. There are two offices and a large meeting room. For further information please contact the Town Clerk, Mrs Susan Evans by email at whittleseytowncouncil@btconnect.com or by telephone on 01733 351296. I am really looking forward to the Allotment and Garden Show on Saturday 18 August; this year the Show is being held in August rather than September by request, and in a different venue – the Scaldgate Youth Centre; I will be able to give you all the news about the winners next month. Sunday 9 September will see the fifth Whittlesey Festival; hopefully the weather will be kind and I’m sure there will be some surprises in store. Each year the Festival gets better. And finally – the date of the Civic Service has been changed and will now be held on Sunday 28 October (not 7th) at 3 p.m. at St Andrew’s Church.

Some playtime not all work...
Street Priders Annual BBQ at Feldale Lakes
T
his was our fourth annual BBQ at Feldale Lakes and we are extremely grateful to their committee for allowing us another enjoyable afternoon. Of course it has rained every year, although luckily it was only a short shower this year. Many thanks also to Lisa Hobbs, who again did all the preparation and cooked some fantastic BBQ for us all. It is customary for us to raise a donation to their nominated charities. This annual event is a bit of relaxation for our group and a thank you to them for all the hard work that they volunteer throughout the year. Our next small project is to help the Jenner Health Centre – who are making some enhancements to the entrance of the Health Centre. Street Pride have donated two half oak barrels to the project. In other news, we are grateful to Mr Keelan Barnes of RB Electrical – who has kindly sponsored our renovation of a ride-on-mower we have been given, this will make our keeping of the Gateway entrances a bit easier. Please come along to the Whittlesey Summer Festival on the 9th September. The Street Pride team will be there along with another fantastic
voluntary group – Whittlesey Neighbourhood Watch. Litter picking is our core activity and we are doing very well – but could do with some more volunteers. If you can help in any way, please contact me, and I’ll send you information on this and any of our other events. COULD YOU HELP A CHILD LIKE KIEREN? “My name is Kieran. I am six and I have got a baby sister called Chloe. We live with Martin and Louise and I love football.
My mummy was sad and went to lie down a lot. Sometimes my sister was smelly and she did cry a lot. Sometimes there was no food. But I am a good cook and me and Chloe did eat beans. I like everything about Martin and Louise. They have lots of good things that never go off, like the TV and it did sometimes go off at mummy’s house. Sometimes they have nice food, but I don’t like carrots. Louise says they will make me see in the dark like Spider Man, so I tried them. I am being a good boy. Louise does give me cuddles and sometimes at night when I wake up, she brings me hot milk and we talk and make it better. And they do love Chloe and give her lots of cuddles too. When we lived with Mummy Chloe did cry a lot and now Chloe only cries a little bit. I see my Mummy sometimes with Chloe and the watcher lady. I don’t know why she is watching us, maybe to make sure I am being good. Mummy is still sad sometimes, but she says she is getting better now and soon we will be able to go home. I miss Mummy, but I like it with Martin and Louise, apart from the carrots.”
People from all walks of life and for all types of fostering are needed to care for children like Kieren and Chloe. Peterborough has over 300 children in care and we urgently need to recruit at least 40 new foster carers to provide these children with a safe and happy home while they are unable to live with their own families. COATES CHAPEL ON THE GREEN By Geoff Oldfield
Local History
At a recent Methodist Circuit Meeting, a decision was taken to close Coates Methodist Chapel and put the building up for sale, bringing to an end 181 years of worship there.
E
recting a Chapel was the vision of George Fletcher who gathered together several like minded residents. Against enormous odds and under his leadership they played their part in getting the chapel built and established.
58th year and George himself died on January21st 1889. They are buried together in the churchyard near the main door to Holy trinity Church. The work he had started carried on and the chapel was enlarged in 1866 proving that the project had been successful.
George Fletcher was born in Eastrea in 1818 but moved to and established himself in Coates as a smallholder and butcher and in one census return he voluntarily records that he was a local preacher. As a local preacher he was remembered for using the expression ‘As sure a my lunch is hanging on those hat pegs……’
Further alterations and improvements were made over the years, in 1954 a partition was erected to form a school room and 1956 saw the chapel enhanced by the installation of a Grand Organ costing £600.00 of which the young people raised £400.00. A further refurbishment was carried out in1998, the building being cleaned and redecorated by willing volunteers in lighter colour to brighten up the chapel. Comfortable chairs replaced the wooden pews and a Kitchen unit was provided at the East end of the schoolroom. The Windows in the South were replaced.
In 1831 he together with the like minded persons, legally staked a claim to an area on North Green on which they intended to erect a chapel. They decided to take just enough common land for the time being, hoping to add more should the need to extend arise. Unfortunately, after the building was erected, the Lord of the Manor, the Rt. Hon. John James, Earl Waldegrave put an end to that practise of enclosing parts of the common. Fencing off this land met with considerable hostility from several of the villagers, as it cut down the area on which their livestock could graze. Funds for the building would have had to be raised from amongst themselves. When building commenced, the enraged villagers opposed to the project and under the cover of darkness, knocked down parts of the building erected that day. George and his friends, not to be outdone mounted a guard at night until the roof was on and the building secure.
Descendents of George have been associated with the chapel since it was built. The last member with the name Fletcher was Ada Fletcher whose funeral service was held here in 2008. A closing down service was held on 4th August2012, the preacher being Reverend Julian Pursehouse, a previous Methodist Minister in the Peterborough Circuit. The building will be put up for sale.
Proudly in association with Wright's of Whittlesey
George was married to Ann Elderkin of Farcet in 1843 and together with his wife opened a shop selling groceries and clothes. As a local preacher, George would walk to one of the other chapels in the area, for example Crowland, conduct morning and evening services and walk home. All this after he had fed his lifestock. George’s wife Ann, died on may 8th 1857 in her

Fishing News
T
By Ken Wade
he Whittlesey area has long been a hot bed of top quality anglers, in years gone by it was bream fishing on the fenland drains where the likes of John Hart, Gordon Anthony and Tony Hudson often stole the show. Then came those that preferred to fish the waggler, before the pole fishing seemed to take over. Commercial waters saw a big switch to pole fishing in recent years yet still one or two locals refused to change and why should they if they can still produce the results.
Policing your area by David Arnold
After a string of fine results Whittlesey rod Dave Garner put a magnificent 214lb 3oz to the scales going back Whittlesey angler Dave Garner to the good old days by fishing a small waggler in the margins on the Six Island pool on the Decoy complex in a recent Fenland Rods club match. Each week I get anglers coming in to my shop to repair their broken poles, often the poles buckling under the strain of anglers trying to land big fish, but with a reel, rod and line it’s made so much easier, and less expensive. So it just goes to show some of the new modern tactics are not always the best. This month and indeed throughout the winter we will be seeing more and more anglers visiting the area to sample the best of the pike fishing our local waters have to offer. We may have to wait just a little longer to see the really big pike arriving but sport on lures and spinners should be good fun in the mean time. Most of our commercial waters have been in cracking form, pick of the bunch could well be Railway Lakes, Whittlesey. The bigger of the two lakes on the complex has seen some huge carp recorded while the smaller, shallow pool has been in top form for several weeks now.
I
t has been noticed over the past couple of weeks that there has been an increase in the amount of petty crime happening in the area. For unknown reasons people have been committing crimes such as vandalism through damaging plant pots, graffiti on fence panels and theft of garden ornaments. Although these crimes do not have a high cost value they are often very annoying and such items often mean a lot to their owners. We are doing all we can to catch the people responsible for the current trend and we can assure everyone that if these people are caught, then they will be dealt with in a positive manor. We still need your help. If you see or hear anything that looks suspicious, please do not hesitate to contact us on 101 or for an emergency, 999.
5th October Quiz Night This event is being held at the Conservative Club Whittlesey, 7.30pm start. Ticket price of ÂŁ8 inclusive of Fish and Chip Supper. Tickets available from Ann Mason 01733 208215.

A word from
Whittlesey Christian Church The Challenging But Exciting Journey Into Christian Faith This week we started work on what appears to be a myriad of preparatory jobs the remodelling of our church seems to require. We are under no illusions as to the challenges this project will bring, but neither do we have any doubt that it is vital if we are to continue expanding our contribution into the life of this community. As we unloaded our first delivery of materials on Monday August 6th I found myself recalling the time 50 years ago when, as a young man in my late teens, having absolutely no interest in God, I wandered into a church in order to win a bet. That night I had what can only be described as a dramatic encounter with God which seriously threatened and changed my indifferent attitude towards God. I still remember the first question I asked the Pastor – ‘how can I possibly live the Christian life?’ One of my older sisters reckoned that if I continued believing in God for 12 months, she would join me. Well, here I am today 50 years later, and thankful to God for the amazing things I’ve seen during my 40 plus years in the ministry, 23 of which were spent in international travel. Have there been times when I doubted whether I would come through the countless challenges and questions? Most certainly yes. Have they weakened my faith? Indeed not. As our church takes these first steps in a new journey of faith to see how God will provide the finances required, will we have challenging moments? I’m sure we would not be human if we didn’t. But deep in our hearts we know these challenges will only serve
to strengthen our faith and understanding in a God who is absolutely committed to honouring His promises and taking care of His children. The Christian life is not just about always having the answers to every question raised by life, it’s also about having the patience to allow faith in God to see you through them. Why not make your decision today to begin exploring the reality of a real Christian faith. Start by either contacting me or coming along to one of our meetings on Sunday morning. Like me, you could be pleasantly surprised at how meaningful and full of purpose life becomes. A word from Cllr Martin Curtis
I have decided to use this month’s column to have a bit of a moan about an issue that quite a few people have raised with me in the last month or so - the increasing amount of dog mess that irresponsible owners seem to be leaving around our Town. Not only does a failure to clean up after your dog make Whittlesey look disgusting, it is a health hazard – in fact dog waste often contains a worm called “Taxacara Canis” which causes illnesses that can lead to blindness. Exactly how irresponsible do you have to be to leave something like that lying around? Our Town Council recently had a presentation from Fenland’s Street Scene officer that outlined the changes they are making to ensure they are better positioned to catch and fine owners who fail to clean up after their dogs. I would also make a request to residents – if you know who these people are, don’t be afraid to pass their names on to me, or to Fenland District Council. If you see some mess lying around please report it. That will ensure someone can clean it up, but it will also give our street scene team a little intelligence to help
them to catch those responsible. This need to clean up after your dogs includes when you are walking them on the green wheel, or similar paths - these routes are often used by children and families, so it is just as important that they are kept clean. But above all, the message is clear, we have every intention of catching and fining irresponsible dog owners. Keep being irresponsible and we’ll catch you. I apologise for this moan – but it is a subject I have heard a lot about in the last few weeks and it is one that I cannot ignore. Normal service will be resumed next month. As ever, I am more than happy to discuss his, or any other Whittlesey issue. I can be contacted by the following methods: Tel: 07887808442 Email: mjc@martincurtis.net Website: www.martincurtis.net Twitter: @cllrmcurtis

Gardening
Garden Jobs for September
S
eptember is a good time to start tidying up for winter. Even though the garden will soon be dying back, remember to still take care of your plants. Pruning, tying in, dead-heading and clearing away leaves are all important jobs to keep on top of. Debris from plants that are already dying back should be picked up and disposed of. Condition your soil by digging it over and adding manure at the same time. A little forward planning will mean less work for you to do next year.
Fungal diseases
Fungal diseases are prolific at this time of year due to the cooler and damper weather. Keep an eye out for mildew and rust especially on roses. Make sure you pick up any diseased leaves and burn them so it doesn’t spread to other plants.
Prepare your greenhouse
As it’s time for some end of summer cleaning, make sure you have enough space in your greenhouse for plants that are tender and need care over the winter. It might be worth getting a thermometer to put in a shaded area of your greenhouse so you can check that the temperature is not dropping too suddenly. Insulate your greenhouse with a layer of bubble wrap and give your plants a helping hand through winter. Your greenhouse will have fewer draughts and will also benefit from lower bills if you use a heater during the very cold months.
Spice it up
Plant of the month
Aster
This is the ideal time of year to spice up the garden by planting a tree or some shrubs. They will enjoy the cooler temperatures, even though you may not. Try to plant them quite deep into the soil as this will improve the survival rate, resulting in strong and healthy plants. Healthy plants need watering even when dying back
Keep watering
A healthy plant needs to be moist even when it is dying back so keep watering if the weather conditions are dry. When it does rain, still try to make sure that your plants are receiving enough water. You can do this by checking how dry the soil is at the base of the plant.
Your lawn
Before winter sets in, do the lawn weeding and sprinkle grass seed mixed with compost on to lawns to thicken growth. It is better to get rid of the weeds now than do it later when it is cold and wet. If you decided to use weed killer it is advisable to wait three weeks before you seed the lawn. If you have chosen to seed first then you need to wait for the new seed to germinate, otherwise you could damage the tender leaves.

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Whittlesey Museum
The Hermitage Care Home of Whittlesey
Annual Car Boot and Fete
The Hermitage Care Home at Whittlesey held its annual fund raising Car Boot and Fete on Saturday July 21st and the weather couldn't have been kinder. Many local business's very kindly donated raffle prizes as did family members and friends of our residents. We had our usual drinks tombola which is always very popular as well as a cake stall, a refreshment stall and genuine car booters, many of who return each year. The day was a fantastic success and we managed to raise a staggering ÂŁ2250.00 all of which goes into the residents Comfort Fund. This pays for such things as trips out to the seaside, theatre trips, in-Home entertainment and anything else that the residents want to make happen. We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated something, everyone who helped out on the day and to everyone for coming along and supporting us.
Sudbury Court invites...
(Stonald Rd, Whittlesey, PE7 1RY) ..you to a MacMillian morning on the 20th of Sept.
10am-11.30am Tea, coffee, cake stall, tombola, raffle and more. Please come and enjoy this event for such a good cause.
Whittlesey museum is a great asset to the town. Located in Whittlesey Town Hall it covers the area's history as far back as pre historic times, and even holds a large photographic collection and census, plus Church records. It was opened in 1976 and run by volunteers. In 1996 Maureen Watson, who had been a volunteer for many years became Curator and the museum is now an Accredited museum offering educational visits to local schools and groups. However Maureen now feels it is time to step down and hand over to someone with new ideas. Currently the museum is run by a strong group of volunteers both stewarding at opening times and also undertaking all aspects of running this local history musem. A curator is now needed to take on the main responsibilities but will be guided by the Trustees. New volunteers are always needed and knowledge of the area is not necessary as there is always someone to help and advise. Becoming a volunteer is very rewarding as it leads to new friends, a sence of achievement and gives the opportunity to learn about the past and undertake free training on various aspects of museum work. For more information please contact Maureen Watson on 01733 840968. The museum is open Fridays and Saturdays 10-12 and Sundays 2.30-4.30

Avengers Assemble

September
Marvel Avengers Assemble is a 2012 American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name and is the sixth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is scripted and directed by Joss Whedon and features a cast that includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, and Samuel L. Jackson amongst others. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and The Incredible Hulk; or collectively The Avengers was launched by Marvel in 1963 as a response to DC’s Justice League of America comic, featuring Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, yet there is very little old-fashioned about this lot. Joss Whedon’s film is an assemblage of everything that’s good about contemporary popcorn cinema. Not only does he achieve this, but he also manages to knot the plot threads together of its five prequels. So what happens in Marvel Avengers Assemble - If you can remember the details, you’ll already be aware of the importance of a glowing energy cube called the Tesseract, which is stolen by Loki, god of mischief (Tom Hiddleston). Loki hopes to use it to summon an obliging alien army to help him subjugating the Earth, and kidnaps Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and the astrophysicist Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) to help with his evil scheme.

In response, Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D. scrambles his best men: billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr), super-soldier Captain America (Chris Evans), and ace scientist Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), alterego of the Hulk. Soon enough they’re joined by Thor, the god of thunder (Chris Hemsworth), who has a score to settle with Loki, and the Russian spy Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). As the first of this season’s three superhero movies (the others being The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man), Avengers sets the bar impressively high and is definitely one worth renting this month. A monthly feature that focuses on current financial issues. Many local Banks and Building Societies have lost their ‘in house’ adviser and few are independent. Eamonn is a fully qualified local Independent Financial Adviser.
How Independent Financial Advice can help In an independent survey* the following key findings came to light.
Comparing two groups of consumers with similar income: • The group that received financial advice had a much higher proportion of people with life insurance, pension provisions and investment products than the non-advised group. • The current average pension pot for consumers who have been advised on their retirement planning is £74,554.30, double that of those not seeking advice. • On investments, people with an adviser save for longer and contribute more, leaving them an average investment value over £40,000 higher than for those who haven’t sought advice. What conclusions might we draw from this? By

seeking the views of a professional adviser – the quality of decision making can be greatly improved. For example – the provision of adequate retirement plans in itself is a sensible decision – rather than having to retire on a very reduced level of income – with good advice – the actual cost of investment is reduced because a properly set up retirement plan can reduce exposure to taxation and maximise the benefit of investment markets. If you would like to see how independent financial advice could benefit you – please contact me to arrange a free initial meeting. * unbiased.co.uk 16th July 2012
